Blue kick plates were not especially common but 1993-94 was the final time they were used in New Jersey. They had also been used in prior seasons in Detroit, Montréal, and Québec.

  1. They should bring em back. It’s cool how arenas use their team colours for the top of the boards but the bottom are all yellow I think

  2. Blue kick plates, Mac-T with no bucket, and a goal judge behind the net. This is the hockey I grew up with.

  3. I’m GenX and have watched the game since I was a kid and have absolutely no memory of this change. I think it’s because the color of the kickplate probably isn’t visible on pre-HDTV screens.

  4. I think that was an arena by arena choice for the kick plate. If I remember correctly, even back then at the Garden it was yellow. However, it would be cool if teams had the freedom to make it any color they like.

  6. Back when you can blatantly cheat on faceoffs. They added the markings for players to put their feet in 1996-97.

Also for some reason the ice inside the net was blue in those years. I think that was changed to white in 1995-96. Black puck on white is much easier for cameras than black puck on blue ice.
