Hope you all had a wonderful Fourth of July weekend. Back to business here as usual on the podcast and following the NHL draft just over a week ago now. Blackhawks prospect development camp also begun last week down at Fifth Third Arena. Of course, all off ice activities once again, though, which kind of stinks as someone who really did enjoy going on down to the city and watching some of these new prospects that the Blackhawks just selected or some of the guys who have, you know, been around in the organization the last few years and kind of see how they’ve been developing and whatnot. Getting some updates on them. I do understand why the Blackhawks have have elected to do this just because, you know, the timing of when this camp falls in the summer. It’s a month or two after most of these guys seasons have wrapped up, maybe even longer than that. And it wouldn’t really make a lot of sense for them to go and ramp up when it would normally be a down period for them just to go in and press the Blackhawks coaching staff for a couple of weeks. doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense for them to do that. As much as I did enjoy prospect development camp being on ice, but I do think it’s, you know, important what the Blackhawks have done to replace that. Not only these guys continuing to get stronger in the weight room, but doing it alongside one another and then also some of the cool trips they have them go and do like the river boat tours or going down to the beach to play some sand volleyball. I know they’ve done cooking classes in the past, just getting these guys to do team bonding activities. I know it can sound a little bit corny, but but it is worthwhile for these young kids. And and it also, I think, is cool for them to get the opportunity to see the city that they were drafted by, right? And get kind of the feels and maybe gives them a little bit more inspiration, uh, you would think at least to go and make it to the NHL one day and be part of the Blackhawks NHL club. So, I do think it is again worthwhile and makes a lot of sense for why the Blackhawks do this. But because everything is off ice, there isn’t really a ton to talk about regarding most of these prospects. But we did get a few noteworthy updates that I definitely wanted to touch on here during today’s episode. First and foremost though, the Blackhawks prospect development camp roster was made up of 21 players, 16 forwards, only four defenseman, and just one goalender, which was Adam Gyne. 2023 second round pick. Been a bit of a struggle for him since the Blackhawks made him the first goalender off of the board in 2023. Didn’t go well for him in his final year in the USHL. And then as a freshman with Minnesota DUTH, not a whole lot of consistency. He’ll be returning there and he’s still very young. You can never truly judge a goalender at a young age, but at the same point in time, I’d be lying if I said things have gone swimmingly for Guyian since being drafted by the Blackhawks. But hopefully you’ll have a bounceback big-time sophomore season here with the Bulldogs this fall. The four defenseman on the Blackhawks prospect development camp roster, Ashton Kumbi, 2025 sixround pick from uh the Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL. Ty Henry, who was also a sixround pick last year for the Blackhawks, played for the Eerie Oats this past season. Ryan Mast, who the Blackhawks acquired from the Boston Bruins just about a month ago now in exchange for a seventh round pick. Spent all of last season playing in the AHL with Providence. add some more size on the right hand side for the Rockford Ice Hogs. He was part of the roster. And then uh rounding things out was Yanni Pelton in 2023, seventh round pick, who’s been playing in the Mestus League over in Finland, the second tier professional league over in Finland. The 16 forwards on the roster, Nathan Bem, third round pick of course recently for the Blackhawks from the Cam Loops Blazers in the WHL. Sasha Bu 18th overall selection in 2024. Yuri Felchman who was a third round pick in 2023 been playing over in the Czech Republic or actually over in Switzerland I believe. Uh Anton Fondelle of course the third overall pick probably the most noteworthy name here on this roster. Parker Holmes who was a fourthround pick in this year’s draft. Nick Lardis who I still can’t believe went in the third round back in 2023. I’ll get to more on him here in just a second. Martin Messiac, 2023 second round pick, who played along with Ty Henry for the Euratters this past season. John Mustard, who was a third round pick, first of three third round selections for the Blackhawks in 2024. Vaslov Nesteril, the 25th overall pick in this year’s draft. Jack Pridum, who I’ll touch on here in just a second, was a uh the last third round selection for the Blackhawks in 2024. AJ Spellellacy was the middle of those third round picks between Mustard and Spely. Uh Julia Sump, who was a fourth round pick in this year’s draft, played for the Monton Wildcats in the QMJHL. Joel Svenson, who was a fifth round pick in 2024. Uh Riku Toyila, shout out Big Riku, and shout out to my boy Big Will if he happens to be listening to this episode. Seventh round pick for the Blackhawks in 2022. He was uh part of the last on ice Blackhawks development camp and seeing that man skate around uh at his size was a sight to be seen that’s for sure. He also like Yanni Pelton and has been playing in the Mestus League over in Finland. Merrick Vanaker 2024 first round selection for the Blackhawks. And then rounding things out, Mason West, the most recent first round selection for the Blackhawks. Of course, coming out of Adina in Minnesota, uh, in playing for the Fargo Force in a small sample size in the USL. Sounds like he’s going to be returning to Minnesota to play his senior season of college football, but uh, I don’t know if that’s necessarily the wisest decision, the Blackhawks allowing him to go and do that. We’ll see if that uh, actually transpires. but set to of course play for Michigan State in the 2627 campaign as he’s still only 17 years old and hasn’t even gone through his senior year of high school. But getting into the noteworthy updates that we got here from Blackhawks development camp on just a couple of guys. Starting with Sasha Bu who as I mentioned first round pick for the Blackhawks in 2024 and is transferring from North Dakota to Boston University despite having a really strong freshman campaign with North Dakota. Um and this probably feels like it’ll be his last year in the NCAA if all goes well considering how strong his freshman season was. Uh but opened up about why he transferred from North Dakota and as I expected on the show because Brad Barry was fired and he had been recruiting Guav apparently since he was 14 years old. Gu had a lot of emotions about that happening and elected to go and hit the transfer portal. Beu is you know obviously another prestigious program set to have a stacked roster for this upcoming season. So, super excited to see how Sasha is going to blend with that team and hopefully help them put together a long run to the Frozen Four and maybe even a national championship where they of course made it there this past season. But yeah, Bav didn’t want to transfer from North Dakota, but because his coach had been fired, felt like it was best for him to go elsewhere. Worth mentioning that Bavar also uh received an invite from Hockey Canada to their World Junior Summer Showcase, which isn’t all that surprising, but will be a lot of fun watching him play as part of that team. Hopefully, one of the driving forces for them as well as for Boston University. And he was, of course, the NCHC rookie of the year this past season with 32 points, 18 goals, 14 assists in 37 games. Speaking of Boston University, of course, Blackhawks 2024 third round pick Jack Pridom was expected to join Sasha Bu in the fall with the Terriers, but that’s not going to be the case any longer as Pridam will remain with the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL again this season. And it sounds like he’s going to be making the leap to pro hockey. That’s what’s expected after the season wraps up again if all goes well. could be even receiving a contract from the Blackhawks here this summer now that he’s not uh going to be joining on with BEu. Really interesting decision here though from Pridam. I can see both sides of it. Got to think this is because of just all the new rules in the NCAA and how flooded the transfer portal is and how much talent is on the college scene right now. Maybe Pridam felt like he wasn’t going to get as good of an opportunity at BEu, whereas he’s going to be one of the main guys for the Rangers next year and was excellent for them after leaving the BCHL. Had 54 points, 27 goals, 27 assists, and 48 regular season games. Got some good size, 6’2, really dynamic offensive abilities. One of my favorite prospects in the entire system. Um, I I do understand him wanting to continue uh the momentum that he built last year in Kitner. That does make a lot of sense and that’s the reasoning that he mentioned at prospect development camp for why he elected to stay with the Rangers because he really liked the people. He really liked the fit and he also just wanted to build off the momentum that he established last year. All of that I understand. at the same point in time playing for BEu, a much more, you know, established program playing against some better competition. That would have done Pridam some some good as well, but is certainly going to get a larger opportunity with the Kitchener Rangers once again here this season. Also got to talk about Nick Lardis, who was the first 70 goal scorer in the OHL since John Tiveres in 2007. this past year uh had 117 points, 71 goals, 46 assists, and 65 regular season games for the Brford Bulldogs along with Merrick Vaner who was injured at the beginning of the season. And now fellow Blackhawks prospect Parker Holmes after being selected in the fourth round of this year’s draft. Unfortunately for Lardis suffered a knee injury in the OHL playoffs at the end of a bad hit. Uh, and that not only derailed the rest of his season, but also derailed the Bulldogs hopes of winning an OHL championship. And he was cooking in the postseason as well prior to that injury. 15 points in seven games, 11 goals, uh, and four assists. The good news though is that Lardis says he feels like he’s 100% recovered from the knee injury that he suffered in that second round series, but he did lose around 15 pounds or so of weight due to just being so immobile. He’s now down to about a buck 80ish or so. He said uh will spend the rest of the summer trying to regain that strength and add on more weight as he’s going to be hitting the professional level. He’ll certainly need that. But because I mean even prior to this injury, it was very likely that Lardis was going to um start his professional career in the AHL with the Rockford Iceogs. But I would say because of this injury and because he’s uh a little bit I would say undized for probably where he wants to be at this point of the summer and what’s such a crucial offseason for him unless he absolutely wows the Blackhawks coaching staff during training camp and during preeason. Uh they’ll be very likely beginning the year with the Rockford Ice Hogs, which isn’t the worst thing in the world by any means, but good to hear that Nick Lardes feels like he’s 100% at this point of the summer is going to be back on the ice. uh has been back on the ice, which is very good to hear. And then his OHL teammate from this past season, Parker Holmes, of course, had to undergo shoulder surgery, forced him to miss a majority of his draft year. Only played in 21 games for Brford this season. Tally just one goal and no assist, which of course sparked uh a lot of conversation from Blackhawks fans on social media about why the heck they would take this kid in the fourth round. Well, simply because he’s a goon and provides some size and protection for the lots of skill guys that the Blackhawks already have in their forward group. So, I certainly understand uh going a little bit of a different route here with Parker Holmes, but he will be fully recovered from his shoulder surgery by mid August. He said just in time for the start of the OHL season. He’ll be back with Merrick Vanacker for the Brford Bulldogs. But there are all the noteworthy takeaways, updates that we got from Blackhawks development camp. Wish it was on ice. Wish we got a little bit more to talk about and got to see how some of these guys are looking. But again, fully understand why the Blackhawks have elected to go this route. Coming up in just a moment here, Blackhawks fans, I’ll dive into some updates on where Blackhawks free agents signed over the past week. But for segment two here on today’s show, wanted to get into where some Blackhawks, UFAS, and RFAS have signed since the free agent market opened on July 1st, as well as some Blackhawks legends as we like to call them in the Blackhawks Twitterx, whatever you want to call it these days. Uh, but we got some updates to get into on a handful of players that have played for the Blackhawks in recent years. Starting with Philip Kuresev, who, as I mentioned, signed on with the San Jose Sharks, but when I brought it up, I I couldn’t remember the particulars of the deal off of the top of my head. I knew he had signed with San Jose. Couldn’t remember if it was a one or two-year deal. It’s a one-year deal for Kurishv with the Sharks. $1.2 million cap hit. interesting choice for him to go from, you know, one rebuilding club to another. Know it feels like the Sharks are one year ahead of where the Blackhawks are at in their rebuild, but certainly an interesting choice for Kurv, but probably feels like he’ll get a pretty decent opportunity to also play with some exciting young talent out there on the West Coast. And who doesn’t love California, am I right? Then speaking of California, we got an update on Cole Gutman, who not surprising to see depart the Blackhawks organization given that he wasn’t receiving much of an opportunity these last couple of years. Wasn’t a a Kyle Davidson guy. So, not surprising to see him leave, but wish he would have gotten a little bit more of an opportunity. Wishing him all the best, though, in his next stop as he’s signed a 2-year two-way deal with the Los Angeles Kings. Uh, so feels like they they could be giving him a chance to make their NHL roster considering it’s a two-year type of deal. And he is someone who’s produced very well in the AHL over the last two seasons. Tallied uh 57 points, 23 goals, 24 assists in 70 games this past year. Just turned 26 back in April. And also a California kid, so makes sense for him to go home. wishing him all the best with the Los Angeles Kings. And then we got an update on Marcel Marcel who when I broke down the Blackhawks UFAS and RFAS going into free agency, I wondered if someone like Marcel Marcel uh could be receiving another AHL deal just because given he has made some good progress with Rockford these last few years and he just has a little bit of a different makeup again being that he’s, you know, 6’3, 6’4, 240 lbs already. Uh, I feel like it would make sense to give him another opportunity. That’s exactly what he got here from the Icehogs. One-year AHL deal. Tallied 13 points, five goals, and eight assists in 41 AHL games with Rockford last year. But it’s never really going to be about the offensive production for Marcel Marcel. Highly unlikely that he’s going to be an NHL puzzle piece for the Blackhawks, but if it is, it’s as a physical fourthline grinder. And for that to happen, he’ll certainly have to make the most of his opportunity in the AHL this year. Now, getting into some real Blackhawks legends before I get into the joke Blackhawks legends. Got to start with Patrick Kane. He remained with the Detroit Red Wings on a one-year deal. $3 million base salary, $4 million worth of bonuses. Doesn’t probably want to move his family around. It seems like that’s something that he really appreciates at this stage of his career. And it’s crazy to think that Patrick Kane is going to turn 37 in November. Remains along with his good buddy Alex Debrink with the Red Wings. They obviously have established a really close bond over the last half decade, half decade plus at this point in time. So, does make sense for Patrick Kane to remain in Detroit, but golly, I I don’t even want to like say this because it hurts my heart to say it, but the Red Wings got to get back in the postseason this year or or just be so bad that they trade Patrick Kane at the deadline to a contending team because he just has not played enough postseason hockey since 2015. And uh obviously the door is starting to close on him as every year goes by. So it it would be a shame if he’s not playing in the Stanley Cup playoffs once again in the 2526 campaign. Then obviously Jonathan Taves, his contract with the Winnipeg Jets became official on July 1st. One-year deal that’s full with incentives. Uh pretty pretty player friendly deal in my opinion for Jonathan Taz. I didn’t expect that he was going to be getting as much from the Winnipeg Jets here, but so happy to see that Johnny is at a point where he’s confident enough that he can go and make a return to the NHL. Really hope he plays a massive impact for the Jets here this season. And again, super excited to see him return to the United Center. Those are going to be some pricey tickets regardless of where the Blackhawks are at in the standings. Uh getting into some joking Blackhawks legends now. Henry Yoki Haru, Blackhawks legend who played like 40 something games I believe with the organization after being a first round pick in 2017. He’s been a middling like number five, number six type of defenseman with the Buffalo Sabres ever since getting dealt there. Uh career best year for him offensively was tallying 20 points. though never has really turned into the puck distributor or the transition player that I I think we expected him to be and also isn’t the most stable defender at the same point in time. He signed a 3×3 deal with the Boston Bruins where uh he was traded at the end of last year, played in 18 games with them and makes sense for Boston to bring him back because they certainly need more help on the right hand side uh along with Charlie Makavoy. Ian Mitchell, another Blackhawks legend, signed a one-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings as well. He’ll be joining on with Patrick Kane and Alex Debrink. $775,000 cap hit for Ian Mitchell, who was a second round pick for the Blackhawks in 2017. Never panned out for him here though in Chicago and doesn’t really look like he has much hopes of being an NHLer. just one assist in 15 games with Boston last year and is set to turn 27 years old in January. Then we get to Taylor Radish, who signed a two-year contract with the New York Rangers. After leaving the Blackhawks, he played one year with the Washington Capitals last season, had 27 points in 80 games. Honestly, when I went and looked at his numbers, I was surprised that the playmaking was the the leading force of his production this last year. Seven goals only, but 20 assists for Radish in 80 games. I I always figure him as more of a goal scorer than a playmaker in the NHL when he does produce offensively, but good for him. He also uh 27, well, I guess Mitchell’s 26. He’ll turn 27 in January. Taylor Radish is already 27 years old now with the New York Rangers for the next two seasons. McKenzie Hunt Whistle, shout out to Macker, signed a two-year two-way deal with the Florida Panthers. Unfortunately, his season was cut short due to a couple of different injuries, I believe. Had just two points in only seven games for the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL this past season. Hopefully, Mackerel will be able to uh get healthy and find his footing in Charlotte. Colin Blackwell signed a two-year deal at 775,000 to remain with the Dallas Stars where he had a nice little bit of a bounceback season for them. 17 points in 63 games. Feels like Colin Blackwell is only playing his best hockey when he’s with the Dallas Stars. Uh Adam Goddet, Blackhawks legend, signed a two-year deal with a $2 million cap hit uh with the San Jose Sharks. I didn’t write it down here on my sheet for some reason. But I’ve been really happy to see Godette kind of find his footing in the NHL after going through some struggles. Never felt like he got a true opportunity here in Chicago, but made the most of his time with Ottawa last year. 26 points, 19 goals, and seven assists in 81 games. Going to be fighting to be a full-time NHLER. Uh but should should be considering that contract that he signed with San Jose. He’ll be joining Philip Kuresev. And then last, but certainly not least, Stanley Cup champion Jacob Magna signed a two-year one-way deal with the Vegas Golden Knights at 800,000 because, of course, their backs always right up against the salary cap. He only played in eight NHL games with the Florida Panthers this past season. And I don’t believe he drew in for any postseason contest, but if my research is correct, I saw that the Panthers actually petitioned for him to get his name on the Stanley Cup. And I believe that petition got granted. I’m not a 100 percent certain on that, but it would be absolutely hilarious if Blackhawks legend Jacob Magna if his name wound up on the Stanley Cup along with the Florida Panthers along with Seth Jones along with Gustaf Forsling of course a fellow Blackhawks legend as well. Lot of noteworthy updates on Blackhawks legends. Serious ones though, of course, Philip Kurishv going to San Jose after being a UFA. Cole Gutman leaving the Blackhawks organization, signing a two-year two-way deal with the Los Angeles Kings. Well, Marcel Marcel is returning with the Rockford Ice Hogs on a one-year AHL deal. Coming up in just a moment here, Blackhawks fans. Before I wrap up today’s episode, still got to talk about 2021 sixth round pick Ilia Safenov being traded to the Vancouver Conucks. Just want to say thank you to everyone for making Lockdown Blackhawks your very first listen here to start off your day. For your second listen, make sure to go and check out the Lockdown NHL podcast where there is no offseason, bringing you the daily leaguewide stories that matter the most with the local coverage you love from Locked On. And you can now now find Locked NHL on YouTube or wherever you may be listening to your podcasts. Segment three. Real quick before I wrap things up, haven’t brought up on the show yet that the Blackhawks traded 2021 sixth round pick Ilia Safenov to the Vancouver Conucks in exchange for future considerations just prior to free agency opening up on July 1st, putting an end to uh his time with the Blackhawks organization, although it wasn’t that surprising considering the developments we had gotten in the last couple of months. Although once Safenov’s season wrapped up in the KHL with Akbars, there were some rumblings that he was going to be coming over to North America and it sure seemed like he was going to be signing his entry level contract with the Blackhawks, but it just never wound up happening. And it seems like it’s because the Blackhawks couldn’t guarantee him an NHL roster spot just given the sheer number of bodies that they have already established ahead of him. Uh, and because of that, it seemed like Safenov had some cold feet about coming over to North America. Well, seems like the Vancouver Conucks could possibly be giving him that opportunity here. I I don’t know why the Blackhawks I mean, I guess it makes sense to just trade him if if he’s not going to be part of your organization. But feels like they they’re probably doing Safenov a favor here, trading him to a team that’ll hopefully give him an opportunity. Uh but not all that disappointing considering how he’s developed these last couple of seasons. His intrigue really started in 2022 23 with Obars when he was 21 22 years old and tallied 37 points, 19 goals and 18 assists in 64 regular season games and also had six points in 24 postseason contests to help Akar’s reach the Gagarin Cup. I know he was also officially named an alternate captain for the team that year, but I want to say he was also, if you go and look at elite prospects, it only has the A next to his name, but I want to say he was named the captain for like the second half of the season. I might be wrong on that, Blackhawks fans, but I I really remember that being the case. Maybe I’m wrong, but regardless, uh, a leadership role in the KHL at a young age, really productive season, 6’5, 200 plus pound forward at 21. So, so yeah, there were Blackhawks fans thinking like maybe Ilia Safenov after his KHL deal expires. Maybe he could be a bottom six piece here for the Blackhawks. His contract expired finally this summer, but his last two years really just haven’t been all that productive. I think he only had like 19 uh he had 22 points, seven goals and 15 assists in 51 games for Akbars this past season. So, the production has really dropped off. The Blackhawks couldn’t guarantee him an NHL spot because of that. So, not surprising to see Safenov get traded, but just because he’s someone I’ve referenced here on the show a couple of different times. Wanted to talk about him being dealt to Vancouver. a little bit disappointing, but probably uh not likely to be an NHL if I had to guess with the Vancouver Conucks. We’ll see what winds up happening there. But that’s going to wrap up today’s episode of Lockdown Blackhawks. Everyone, as always, thank you all again for joining me on the show. QUESTION OF THE DAY — What Are YOUR Thoughts On Jack Pridham Staying In The OHL Instead of Joining BU?
Came and went???? … cmon Jack…come and gone
Gajan is not going to be anything. His save percentage in college was HORRIBLE.
I'm neutral on Pridham staying in the OHL.
How many of us in our professional careers ever got a single thing from "team bonding" events put on by the office ladies? I can only imagine how lame kids think it is. Get them on the ice and ditch the new age crap.
In your opening you say the Blackhawks' development camp "has came and went". What kind of English is this Jack? Is this really what you were taught? You should have said either 'it came and went' or it 'has come and went'. A major part of reporting news and offering opinions is using proper words and sentence structure. Just sayin'… Anyway, thanks for the report.
