MLB LIVE🔴 St. Louis Cardinals vs Washington Nationals – Jul 9, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
Welcome into Busushch Stadium in downtown St. Louis. We bring you Wednesday night baseball on the show. It’s the Washington Nationals taking on the St. Louis Cardinals. And now he’s welcome. First pitch coming your way next. So just about set now. And today’s starting pitcher, Eric Fetty. And Singi, it’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think they can move through a ball game and you look off, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. Next offering is in for a strike and that’s downed away. and it remains two and two. That one missed. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Oh, he earned his trip to first right there. It’s not easy laying off pitches that just miss the zone like that. And it’s a real discipline as well. He’s put a lot of work into that aspect of his game and it paid off right there. Next to hit, James Wood. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Wood getting the start in left, batting second in today’s lineup. And he was a second round pick in 2021. Little chopper rolls foul and a pitch and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Call gets his lead at first with nobody out. Cuts on it and misses. That’s a strike out. Went back to the cutter and it was worthwhile. And now it’s Ahmed Rosario swing and a liner foul off to the right. Fetty throws to first. Call back on a dive. Next offering upstairs up the middle and he knocks it down. Throws to second for one. Not in time at first. It’s a fieldielder’s choice. Nathaniel Low up to here. Hard hit to third. They get the force. That ends the frame. So, one left for Washington. Now the Cardinals will see what they can do. There’s no score. You’re dialed into the show. back here in St. Louis and on the hill in this one. Cole Henry. Chris, it’s a little more common these days, but still he’s a strikeout per inning type of guy. Well, I hear you about the strikeouts. A lot more guys striking out today. But when you consider having the ability to get that strikeout, particularly when you need it, a man on third, less than two outs, situations where, yeah, maybe you’re not a real high strikeout guy, but just knowing you have the swing and miss stuff in a big spot, I think it’s real critical. And he’s got it. Fouled off. He was late. Next offering is fouled back. A little bit high maybe and it’s one and two. Good eye in that spot. Sometimes you got to fight to get back into an at bat. Take some tough pitches. Even out the count and that just misses. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. This one in the air. Bell has a beat on it. And out number one on the grab. Here’s a Cardinals lineup. Now, this an offense, Chris, that’s having a hard time scoring runs right now. Yeah, sometimes things just aren’t going to click. And unfortunately, what happens is players press, they try to do a little bit more, and they get out of their game. You’ve got to let the game come to you. If you chase it, it’s going to run from you. So, this is a team that just needs to calm down, relax, and understand that they’re going to come out of this. Lifted in the air, left field, pretty well struck. Young makes the grab and there’s two gone. Two down, base is empty. Wilson Contreras next up for the Cardinals. Swinging a foul straight back. Two down to fought off foul. For whatever reasons, this is a hitter that performs better in night games. We’ll see what he brings in this one. Here’s the 02 ball one there. Well, that’s kind of what you expect in an 02 count. Excellent job of the hitter to have the plate disciplined to lay off of that pitch. Next offering upstairs. And that one just missed off the outside edge. Really good take especially with two strikes on the ground and foul ball. Swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit and that keeps the inning alive. Alec Burlson next up for the Cardinals. He’s someone that really beats up on right-handed pitching. The lefties, however, give him a little bit more trouble. That’s hard hit on the line. Nabs it and that ends the inning. The Cards leave one scoreless after one. Back here at Bush Stadium. Top of the second. Up now for Washington. Paul De Young Fetty back to work and that one in the air center field. Contras settles underneath it, hauls it in, and there’s one away. And now the switch hitting first baseman Josh Bell. That’s in there. That’s strike one. Next offering is fouled back. One down, base is empty. Ripped to third. Throws to first in time. Two gone. Batting seven base. Two outs. Base is empty. Brady House digging in for the Nationals. Fly ball to right. He makes the grab and that is that. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. Back here in St. Louis, we head to the bottom of the second. Here’s the Cardinal DH Yel Po. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. That one the other way and it stays fair. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. So digging in Lars Nbar. First offering runner goes cut on and missed. You know what? I like the aggressiveness right there. Looks like it’s going to be tough to score in this one. Really good pitching so far. So why not try to put some pressure on him and see if he can steal the back, get in the scoring position. late swing. Foul to the left. Little tardy on that fast ball. He’s going to have to get it going a little quicker. Get that front foot down. And the curve is down and in. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another. That one sizzling on its way through to the outfield. Throw quickly into third. They’re at the corners now to start the inning. A perfect example right there. That plate discipline. It pays off. The deeper he gets into account, the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle. Thomas Sajay-Z next up for the Cardinals misses off the play and that’s ball one. And that is out of play. Runners at the corners. Nobody out. Bottom half of inning number two. Hit in the air. Right field. Call. Palls it in. And there’s one away. Catcher. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Pedro Pahes. In the grand scheme of things, this at bat might not feel important because it’s early, but it could create a domino effect for things to come. Control what you can here and have a strong at a popup. foul territory for the catcher. Brings it in and there are two outs. That hanging breaking ball looks so juicy to the hitter and nothing more frustrating when you miss that pitch and you pop out. He’s going to have to think about that till his next at bat. Here’s Garrett Hson. That misses ball one. Counts one and0. Poso on third. Nukebar on to first with two now. That clips the corner and a count one and two. Really going after him here. All fast balls to get ahead in the count. Two on, two outs. And that’s downstairs. Two balls, two strikes. Recognized that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. Chases the fast up the ladder. Struck him out. Well, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. And welcome back to the ballpark. Onto the third inning and it’s the catcher for the Nationals, Riley Adams. Swing and a foul out of play. inside and the count is one and one. Puts it in the air out towards left center. Contraras on his way over. Carous it and a quick out number one. So up next, Jacob Young singing. You got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean, watching him track balls in the outfield, it is beautiful on the ground right side. Donovan got him. Oh, Washington right Alex. Alex Call digging in for the Nationals. Walk to open the ball game. Line drive. Fair ball. Now battles James runner at first with two away. Now the number two hitter James Wood 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. One’s the count. And that one is inside. Two gone, but the go ahead run is at first. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. Fetty checks over to first and he’s back. The next pitch misses now. Two balls in a strike. Two balls, one strike. Here goes the runner up the middle. tosses to first. That’s the third out. Nationals leave one and we are still scoreless. As we go to the last of the third, now it’s the second baseman, Brendan Donovan. and a strike in there. Well, the key to his success is getting ahead early in the count. He cannot afford to go deep in the counts. Doesn’t have a ton of swinging missed stuff, so he’s going to have to work efficiently. And a base hit man aboard on the leadoff single. Nice line drive to the pull side right there. But he didn’t spin off of it. That’s the key. You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that. Mason Win next up for the Cardinals. Fly to center his first time. He’s 0 for one. Fast ball in for a strike and it’s 0 and one. Well, here’s a good opportunity in this inning to get on the scoreboard after that leadoff hit. And Hart the order coming up right behind them. This is where they need to get going. Ruer at first with no outs here. in the air. Left field. Wood under it. Puts it away for the out. Now that is centeroo. Here comes Wilson Contrus. One for one with a single so far. Ground ball to first. Could be two. The throw to second. Return throw to first. Got him. Double play. And that’ll do it. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. Three innings complete. We’re tied nothing. Nothing. Back here in St. Louis, John Shami with Chris Singleton and set to lead off the fourth, Ahmed Rosario. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. He won’t get there. That should be extra bases. And that’s a leadoff double. Well, clearly he was ready to hit right there. First pitch fast ball in a great spot to do some damage and he squared it up nicely. runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. Here’s Nathaniel Low. He’s 0 for one. First pitch, just misses. Rosario leads off second with nobody out. St. Louis and he grounds one to the right side. He takes it on his own. That’s the first out in the top of the fourth. Not a bad outcome in that spot. The runner moves up to third and now they have a chance to drive in the go-ahead run. It’s not a knock, but at the end of the day, it’s a good at bat. Now it’s Paul D. Young up to the plate. 0 for one with a fly out to center. And that one upstairs. Ball one. Runner out at third. One gone. Pretty good pitch there to take a rip at. He wants to get his arms extended. He likes the ball away from him a little bit, just not able to square it up. And that skips in the dirt. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. swung on, popped up on the infield. Two away. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. And now Josh Bell grounded out his first time up. Close but called a ball and it’s one and0. Right through there for a strike. No score yet, but a runner at third with two away. That one missing inside. Still two and two after the foul ball. Fights it off. He’ll see another to the right side. Burlson takes it to the bag and he has thrown four shutout innings. So, one left for Washington and we’re still knotted at zero. Bottom of the fourth and now the first baseman, Alec Burlson. Burlson. Ground ball left side and foul ball. You know, these cards, to put it bluntly, need to put together more competitive at bats, and I don’t think they’ve lived up to their own expectations at the plate. I think things are happening a little quicker than this offense would like, and we see it in the numbers. They’re hitting into a lot of outs early in the at bat. Rarely will you see a pitcher just waste a pitch like that. The batter wasn’t even tempted to swing. Every pitch needs to have a purpose so that it can set up a following pitch to help you get that out. Cut on and miss. curve ball struck him out. Beat him inside on that last pitch. And you look back at the pitch sequence on that strikeout. It’s pretty interesting. Away, in away, and then back in again. Really commanded both sides of the plate right there. And that makes it pretty tough to get comfortable in the box. Now Joho, he’s been a great free agent sign. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Poso goes 5′ 11 in 27 years old and he was born in Venezuela and a foul ball. One down base is empty. Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another. Man, he’d like to have that pitch back. Strike three and that’s two in to a row. Just a mid90s challenge fast ball right there. Not much to it. And I’m sure he’d love another swing at it because it was in a very hitable location. Those are the swings where you can sometimes start to question yourself as a hitter and say, “How’d I miss that?” But you know what happens. Now up for St. Louis. Lars Nbar and that’s a little bit high. Ball one. Ball one. No strikes. And that’s downstairs and outside. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound. In this situation, ahead 200, he’s put himself in a really good spot. That one’s spoiled and the count now two and one. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Two out. Space is empty. And there’s a ball. Two strikes. sets him down on strikes and he strikes out the side here in the fourth. Impeccable command in that one. Three batters, three strikeouts. That’s electric stuff out there on the mound. And we’re back. Ready now for the fifth inning. Now here is Brady House. Fetty back to work. Pitches in the dirt and that’s ball one. Well, these Nats just aren’t putting great swings on the baseball in this one. Just one extra base hit for them. So, they haven’t exactly been hitting the ball gap to gap or out of the park. That makes it really difficult to generate runs. Now a pop up on the infield. Burlson makes the grab. One away. Riley Adams. And here’s the catcher. Riley Adams. fly to center his first time. And there’s a strike on the outside corner. Turned on but foul wide of third. One down. Base is empty. And that’s with the swing. It’s a strike out. Next to hit for the Nets, Jacob Young rolled out to second in his first at bat. He’s been going after these guys consistently and as a result, he’s been able to keep his pitch count low. Throwing the ball very well right now. First off, it just misses. Foul ball. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the fifth. And he bunts, but that’s a foul ball. Liner. And that should be extra bases around first heading for two. He’s there. It’s a two out double. The first move felt like a bit of a guess. You have to be right in those spots or things can get away from you awfully quickly. So the lineup flips over. Alex Call getting ready to hit and ball one to the right fielder. Well, they’re looking to get on the board first here after that clutch two out double made this inning interesting. Young stands at second with two gone. Next offering is in for a strike. And that one fouled off. and a swing in the miss his third of the game. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out. Gets out of the jam. Clearly he’s happy with those results. We head to the bottom of the fifth. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Thomas Sajay-Z sliced hard but foul. You know, these Cardinals need to bring up the quality of their bats and specifically their swings. They’re trying to find ways to drive the ball with some authority, but it’s just not happening for him so far. Zero extra base hits in the game. So, it’s been tough for him to get anything going. The short stop takes the ball. Sometimes you have to keep chipping away until you break through. But, it’s a lot easier to put runs on the board when you have guys in scoring position because they put themselves there. That one way outside and the count is filled up. It’s a lead off walk and that’s the go-ahead run. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Cole Henry is done. And that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today. Gave him some length. Back with a new arm after this. Mike Sroa will take over here. And he’s had a struggle so far this year. As you can see, the inflated erra looking to bring that down a little bit right here. And now the Cardinals catcher Pedro Pah popped out and foul ground. First time through. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. That’s a great take right there. Even though it’s a strike, with the situation, runner on first base, you want to keep the ball off the ground. And you swing at that pitch, most likely you roll into a double play, splits the plate. That is strike two with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. That missed by a lot. Two and two. Nobody out. Runner at first. Foul ball. Another two- two upcoming. That one the other way. And there’s a hit. Throw comes into second. He is saved. Got to love the resiliency he showed in that attack. battling with two strikes. Pretty much a model swing on that one as he ripped it into the opposite field gap. And I’m sure he’s going to be watching that one back on video because that’s the kind of swing you want to bomb. So many positives that led to that knock. A chance now to take the lead. And at this point in the game, that could be a deciding run. Now it’s going to be Garrett Hson and he lays down a bunt. Grabs it bare-handed. It’s there and that’s a great play. That’s a good piece of hitting right there. The job was to move the runner up and give your team a chance to score the go ahead run. That’s exactly what happened. So, you better believe your teammates are happy with you after that at bat. Brendan Donovan next up for the Cardinals. One for two. There’s the strike. Second and third. One away. Breaking ball inside. And now it’s even one and one. Movement in the bullpen. Number 61 looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez. Parker the lefty warming up as well. Check. Swing called strike. That’s strike two. Two on, one out. Bows it off. Still one and two. I think ultimately you want to tie him up. Get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. fights that one away. Still one and two. One down. Runners at second and third. Swing and he breaks his bat. That’s a foul ball. And that is downstairs. And the count is even. Two and two. Fast ball is outside. This is a situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended. What you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up that’s in on your hands. That’ll pop you up in the infield and that’s exactly what the pitcher wants. And that’ll load the bases. Well, the stage has been set for this offense. It’s all about creating opportunities and this is one of them right here. So bases all loaded up and up next for St. Louis, Mason Win for two in this one. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Tough situation right here. It’s so important as a pitcher to get ahead in the count as he did right there. Next offering is in for a strike. Dangerous spot for that slider right there. Didn’t seem to quite finish out front and get that sharp break. Tell you what, he doesn’t want to throw that pitch again. And a swing and a miss. Huge strike out there. Certainly a strikeout situation right there. The infield playing back and this pitcher has to step up and get the swing and miss. Really nice job of attacking the hitter at the plate. Pretty big two out at bat coming up now. And up to hit is Wilson Contrarus. That one’s in there. 0 and one to Jay-Z at third. Pahes on second. Donovan at first. Two out of the inning. And that one fouled off. cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. A lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six. And the batter now, James Wood. That clips a corner and there’s a fly ball deep right field. Hits the fence. Now he’ll turn for second. And now a runner moves into scoring position as we look for the first run of the ball game. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. You connect and it jumps off your bat like that, you’re thinking double at the very least. Put a great swing on it and man, he wasn’t fooled at all. Now, let’s see if they can put up the first run of the game. Go ahead run on base and stepping in is the speedy Ahmed Rosario. And that one missing low. And that’s fouled off. Now fly ball to right center. Brings it in. And there’s one away. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position. Low the next to hit. That’s outside. And that is ball one. right through there for a strike. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. Swing and a ground ball. And that one gets through into center field. Here comes the throw. Safe at the plate on the board first. It’s one zip. Big swing of the bat right there to give him the lead. That was clutch. wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. There’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that. One down now. It’s the shortstop. Paul De Young. Upstairs, ball one. Man at first, one away. Foul ball there. The 1-1 is fouled off and a ball evens the count. got him looking. He’s notched four strikeouts now. Well, that’s great execution on the pitch right there and the battery working together. Catcher does a nice job to present that to the umpire and get that call. Third strike. Here’s Josh Bell. That one finds the zone and that is strike one lined into left center and that should be extra bases. Rounds third headed for the plate. He’ll score easily. Puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI. Just a great approach. Looked like that was exactly what he wanted to do with that pitch. And right off the bat, he knew he was taking that wide turn at first to head for second. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Eric Fetty departs. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. New pitcher for the Cardinals, Sunny Gray. This guy’s a strikethrower. He’s done an excellent job of avoiding walks so far this season. So, runner at second, two down. House digs in now. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. Oh, and one. Two outs and one in scoring position. That’s it. Looks like he was trying to get to the front door with that curve ball. It’s definitely a finesse pitch, but it backed up a little bit on him and stayed inside. Swing and a miss. One and two. One ball, two strike. And that’s down and away. Bell at second with two down. That’s the third. Tosses across the first. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. They get two runs on three hits. No errors and one left. To the bottom of the six we go. 456 coming up. It’s the Nationals two and the Cardinals nothing. Bottom of the sixth inning. And now Alec Burlson. Well, these fans definitely want to get involved in the game. All it’s going to take is to get the leadoff man or even a base runner on. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And that’s ball one. Activity in the bullpen. Jose a Ferrer looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez. Chaffen also getting ready. Check swing called strike. Pitching has been pretty dominant in this one, but you got to be careful. Not working with too big a lead. They could get right back in this ball game if you’re not careful. And foul ball. That one ripped and that is a foul ball. slashes this one and it could be trouble. Around first and hustling for second. He makes it safely with a leadoff double in the six. Back against the wall with two strikes, but found a way. I’ll tell you when you smoke a line drive into the gap like that. I mean, sure, home runs are king, but I feel like nothing makes you feel like a true professional hitter more than a bolt the other way. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Joho will hit next. Tap foul at the plate. Hard hit left side. Zips it to first. One away. Bottom of the six. Now up for St. Louis. Lars Newbar. That’s a little bit low. Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. with the tying run at the plate here in the bottom of the six. Hard ground ball for base stop. Stop sign goes up at third. Runners at the corners with one out. Well, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. got the top of the ball a little bit but not much. That was hit pretty hard through the infield so I think he’d be happy with that swing. Definitely generated some good bat speed. Runners in the corners here. One away and stepping in for the Cardinals. Thomas Sajay and a first pitch fast is in for a strike. Rudders are at the corners. One away in the air left side. Wood sizing this one up. He’s got it. Runner tags from third. The throw home. Not entirely safe with the play and they trail by one. Sometimes all you got to do is your job and don’t over complicate things. Keep it simple. Runner third, less than two outs. put the ball in play and a nice job with the sack fly. Pedro Fahz now at the plate. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. On the ground right side diving stop at first and that’s a great play for the out. Are you kidding me? Excellent stop right there. He wants to take it himself. Waves the pitcher off and continues to run into the dugout. All set for the start of the inning. And now the catcher comes up to hit. Riley Adams Gray measures 5′ 10 in. more than a 100 career wins on the mound. A former first round pick back in 2011. And that finds the mark on the outside corner. And that’s strike one. Move into the bullpen for the Cardinals. John King, the left-hander up and throwing. Number 49. A hard throwing right-hander up as well. Had a swing and a line drive right field. Hamson makes the catch and there’s one gone. Jacob Young digging in for the Nationals. Bunch attempt, but that goes foul. One down. Base is empty. Just missed. Fly ball down the line. Hampson on the run towards the line. Got it. Really had to move for that grab. And a couple of quick outs. Now it’s the right fielder, Alex Call. There’s the strike and a foul ball. Man, this has been a real important inning in relief. I mean, so far they’ve been doing a great job holding that deficit at one and now one and two. Swang and a miss. Struck him out and good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Nothing doing for Washington as they’re unable to add to their 2-1 lead. So, a lefty out of the pen, Jose a Ferrer. He’s averaging more than one hit allowed per inning pitch this season, and that’s not where you want to be at all. So, we’ll see how he does here. And now the right fielder, Garrett Hamson. This is a guy you got to keep an eye on when he digs in. Definitely been known to drop a drag bunt from time to time and he’s pretty good at it, Chris. Yeah. And he creates a sense of urgency for the defense because of the speed, because of the ability to put down that bunt. In there at the knees and the count one and one. Now you see even sluggers from time to time try and use the bunt really as a way to beat the shift. Try to bunt his way on. Bare hands it. Tough play and they get the out. Well, he gave the bunt a shot there but not able to execute. Yeah, I think he rushed it a little bit and when guys rush can be a pop up or can be bunted right back at a position player. Brendan Donovan next up for the Cardinals. pitches in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Trying to hold a one-run lead here in the bottom of the seventh. That’s off the inside corner and the count is one and one. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. swing and he breaks his back. Fair ball. Well, those kind of lucky soft hits will always make you smile. He clearly didn’t catch that one on the big part of the bat. Just kind of muscled it out there. And you know, on the mound, it can be pretty frustrating for a pitcher, but you just kind of have to expect those to drop in there sometimes. One down, runner at first. stepping in Mason Win. That one missed. Counts one and0. One-run game. One out, one on. Next pitch is outside. He doubled up on the off speed there. We talk about the power fast ball, but he’s working a little differently here. runner on the to go. Swing and a miss. Throw to second. Well, you can get away a little bit with not being so accurate when you’ve got such a great arm and you get rid of it quickly. And that’s what happened right there. He made up for the lack of accuracy with excellent velocity. Nice job with the catch and throw right there. Looking to get the tying run on base. Swinging a popup. Rario in position. And that is the third out of the inning. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. We look ahead to inning number eight. It’s the Nationals two and the Cardinals won. Welcome back. And a new arm of the mound to start the eighth, John King. And they felt it was time to bring on a left-handed reliever from the pin with the lefty hitter coming up. I think it’s a good move. I know. I never like when opposing teams did that to me. Wood stands in now and watches strike one. Next offering is fouled back. Swing and a bouncer out to short on to first. First out in the top of the eighth. Ahmed Rosario. Ahmed Rosario digging in for the Nationals. One for three. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. To third win and a couple of quick outs. Well, a tremendous stop there, but it looked like he had a little trouble getting off the throw as quickly as he would have liked. Had to get something on it to beat the runner. Two down, base is empty. Nathaniel Low digging in for the Nationals in the air right field. Hampson makes the grab and that’s the inning. Nothing doing here this half. Last half of the eighth coming up. It’s the Nationals two and the Cardinals won. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Andrew Chaffen. And we all know about his slider. It’s just filthy, man. And one of the better ones in the game, I’d say. Spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a ton. Wilson Contrus now up to the plate. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. That’s way outside. 1 and0 activity in the Washington bullpen. Kyle Finnean, the closer is getting ready and perhaps looking at a long save opportunity here. just missed. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So, that’s a good take by him. Slider clips the zone. Wow, just a beautiful back door slider right there. If you’ve got any chance of hitting that pitch, you have to wait until the absolutely last millisecond. Just a tough pitch to hit. and and meanwhile this a fair ball down the left field line as the tying run is forced to stop at second. I’m sure he feels really good about that one. He got a pitch he could get to out front, kept his back through the ball and didn’t pull off or roll his hands over and that allowed him to rip that ball down the line for the double. A chance now to even the score and maybe extend this game. So the tying run in scoring position now. Now here is Alec Burlson. That one finds the zone and one. So the tying run is second and that’s outside. Swing and a miss. Yeah, they count. One and two. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. Well, if he’s going to do something special right here, it’s going to have to happen with two strikes. And look out as that one ran in and got him. He had him one, two, and he ends up hitting him with a pitch. First and second, no outs. And now the DH Yoel Poso. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Way to lay off that pitch down. And another ball. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. Next offer is in for a strike. And this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. Yeah, the 2-1 hammered but foul. Liner and this could be trouble. Contras headed home. Slams off the bottom of the wall. He’ll score and they tie it. Cut off now. A throw home. Safe. He beat the tag. 32. They take the lead. Such great concentration. Everybody on their feet knowing that you can come through with a good swing. And there he doesn’t try to do too much. Manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make a move to dip into the nationals pen. Andrew Chaffan done for the night and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Number 61 into the game and he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. Runner in scoring position. No outs. And up next for St. Louis, Lars Newbar. First pitch misses. Poso at second with nobody out. swing and a miss. Ugly swing right there. One ball, two strength. And there’s the ball. Got him looking for the K. He’s got to be frustrated with that call. Tunnneled that pitch. thought it was going to be a slider breaking in off the plate, but it hugged the corner and at that point when he recognized it, it was just too late. So digging in Thomas Sajay-Z and a first pitch fast is in for a strike. One out and a runner at second here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. And that one is downstairs. One ball, one strike. Nope. That’s a ball. gets the outside corner with that one. Breaking ball in there. Got him looking. Two away. No, you got to be ready to swing the bat with a runner in scoring position in two strikes. Just put the ball in place somewhere and you got a chance. Very frustrating for him, I’m sure. See if the next guy can pick him up. Pes the next to hit takes outside runner at second. Two down. Just missed. Back to back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So I think the confidence level is raised right here. Man on second, two down. That one missed. Now three and 0. Garrett Hamson in the St. Louis on deck circle. That clips a corner. That one finds the zone. Counts full. Three and two. And boy, that was the pitch. 3-1. You want to be really aggressive on the fast ball. Man at second. Swinging a ball popped in the air and that’ll fall for a base hit. Coming home. The throw in. It’s off the mark and he scores. It’s 42. Showed a lot of fight with two strikes in that AB. I’m amazed at his ability to pull his hands inside and actually square that baseball off. That pitch was off the plate. So tough to get the barrel to anything in there. Two outs, runner at first. Now it’s the right fielder Garrett Hamson. Strike one. 0 and one. Two outs. The other way and that’s a fair ball. They stop the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. Back-to-back singles. He really shot that one down the right field line and somehow found a way to keep it from slicing the foul. One thing that was great about the approach, his head was down all the way through the pitch and that’s how you do it. Next to hit, Brendan Donovan swinging a ball hit out towards left center field. Reaching for makes the catch. So they get three and jump ahead late through eight full. It’s the Cardinals four and the Nationals two. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Ryan Hley. Save opportunity for him right here and he’s their guy. Time to lock this one down and get out of here with a W. And now up for Washington. Paul De Young 0 for three in this one. That one in triple digits. That one fouled off. to the right side. Donovan tosses to first. Now one gone in the ninth. Those plays can be tricky. They’re routine, but that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be smooth. He delivered a good play right there. He’s two outs away. Josh Bell the next to hit. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Wow. Triple digits on the gun. I I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past, but it’s still impressive to watch. climb the ladder with that fast ball and it’s one and two on the ground to third down to the last out for the Nationals. That’s a huge defensive play in the late stages of the game. It might not be the most challenging we’ve seen today, but it needed to be made. That’s helping your team. Now, the third baseman, Brady House. In there for strike one. 01’s the count. They’re down to their final strike. Well, you got the hitter already chasing that nasty slider. If you’re on the mound, you just want to expand the zone right now. Get a swing anding miss and get through this at bat. This could end it. That misses. Going to count one and two. I don’t like to say he wasted a pitch. I think that was a purpose pitch. Change the eye level. Have him look up. Now go back exactly where you want to go. And a ball in two strikes. Got him. And that’s the ball game. All these players were able to take the lead in the bottom of the eighth. just cruise to this win, getting those final three outs in the top of the ninth. Excellent job of securing your home field and keeping the fans in the ball game all the way to the end. Nice W all the way around. And your final 42 for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shami saying so long.
