MLB LIVE🔴 Kansas City Royals vs Pittsburgh Pirates – Jul 9, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
All right, just about ready for baseball. And on the mound today, Seth Lugo and Singi, he likes pitching at home. Well, truly for him, there is no place like home. He’s been so dominant here. And as a teammate, you expect him when pitching at home this year to go out and dominate just as he has. the fans expected and I think everyone around here knows that he’s a good pitcher. Even though we don’t see the same splits on the road, we’re going to start to see that translate as well. Spencer Horowitz leading things off and takes a strike. [Applause] This one popped up. India and there’s one down. Here’s a Pirates lineup now. And so far this year, this has not been a very good offense. Well, in this day and age, if you can’t slug and get on base, that OPS has to be at a certain level. If you’re going to produce runs, give your pitchers an opportunity as they’re facing tough offenses as well. And now it’s Andrew McCutchen. and first offering is fouled off. Lugo, not a big strikeout guy, but still very effective as far as starting pitchers go. One of those guys that involves the defense and really gets him involved in the action. That’s off the mark and it’s a ball and a strike. He moves the ball around all the quadrants of the strike zone and will add and subtract velocity and because of that he gets the weak contact. It’s all about missing the barrel of the bat. Fair ball. [Applause] It seems like this type of guy is kind of a dying breed nowadays. Well, exactly. when teams are looking for high velocity, high strikeout rates, guy like this doesn’t necessarily do that. So, in order to really appreciate how good he is, you have to see him because if you’re just looking at a stat sheet, you might overlook him. Swings and pulls a foul to the right side. [Applause] [Music] Rolled to short. Could be two off balance feet. There’s one to first n time. Great effort there. Nick Gonzalez, Nick Gonzalez now at the plate. [Music] And that one goes straight to the back stop. So, a wild pitch allows the runner to advance. Nobody on defense feels great right now. The pitcher feels responsible for missing so far outside. And the catcher wishes he could have done more to try to stop it. Line to left and that’s just foul. Just a matter of inches from picking up an RBI base hit and maybe a double in the process. That was barely foul. Let’s go Royals. Late that time in strike two. I would throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Reynolds at second with two down. [Applause] [Applause] fights that one away. Still one and two. Pitcher having a pretty tough time getting that swing and miss. Third foul ball in a row. Up and in. And the count now even up. Two balls, two strikes. Strike him out. Line drive. Base hit. Coming around third is Reynolds. He’ll score. It’s an RBI single and it’s one- nothing. Mission accomplished there as he picks up the RBI to give him the lead. Everything was on time and fluid in that swing. Got a pitch he could get the barrel on and lined it into center for the knock. Those always feel good. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So, we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Two outs, runner at first. Here’s O’Neal Cruz. Pulled hard, but it’s a foul ball. If it were an average catcher behind the plate, I’d say take second base, but this isn’t a catcher you want to run on. His quick release is unreal. [Music] Two outs. Swaying a ball popped in the air. And that’s a fair ball. Gonzalez round second, heads for third. Lead runner gets the stop sign at third. It’s a two out double. Second and third now. Back to back base hits. Hooked around that pitch on the outside, but he was still able to square it up pretty nicely. And that takes quick, strong wrist to pull that off. So, two on with two away. And here’s the veteran outfielder Tommy Fan. Ball one there. This might be the most pressure you put on this guy today. You got one run in. You got to try to get another one or maybe two fall off foul. It’s great to get on the board in the first frame of the ball game, but here’s an opportunity for them to really open things up with a couple of runners on. Let’s see if they can cash in. That one misses and it’s two and one. He’s got a base open, so the pressure to come in and really attack this hitter not as great as it would be if the bags were sacked. [Applause] Finish him. Foul ball. Another two- two upcoming. Second and third, two down. in the air out towards right center. Kaggle Leone on the move makes the catch and that’s the third out. So, one run in the inning on this base hit. It’s now a one- nothing ball game. You’re dialed into the show. Back here in Kansas City, starting on the mound in this one, Paul Schmes. Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. And it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way, somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. Jonathan India, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. No strike. You have to be creative pitching against bad ball hitters. You got to add some velocity, subtract at times. Just avoiding the heart of the plate isn’t always going to be enough. Guys like this can hurt you with pitches you wouldn’t expect them to swing at. Two to count. Inside. Almost got him. Straighten him up a little bit. No strike. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Bell just came apart right there. Four pitch walk and guy at the plate was not going to help him out by swinging at something out of his own. Now, here’s Bobby W Jr. Foul ball there. [Music] Rudder at first with no outs here. Going chew. Now back to the bound and it finds its way through for a hit. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Good two strike hitting right there, but it was a bit of a lost start for some. So that was nicely done to beat the odds. Really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. He didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. First and second, no outs. Pasquantino getting ready to hit. Just missed. [Applause] No outs. Runners at first and second. [Applause] That misses. And that’s ball two. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. [Music] Maybe a two ball. Five, four, three, and they turn the double play. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaders. They make tough plays look simple. And now it’s Salvador Perez to the plate. that one at triple digits. So after the double play, he’s trying to pick up his teammate and tie this game. Two outs with a runner at third. [Music] Strike on the inside corner. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. He’s going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. Strikes him out with 101. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. Back here at Kaufman Stadium. Top of the second. And now the first baseman, Jared Triolo. Lugo back to work. That missed by a lot. One and0. Strike one. One ball. One strike. [Applause] swing and a miss. Struck him out. That’s tough. You see it well. I mean, that was clearly up and out of the strike zone. But that’s one of the hardest things, you know, when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level, that discipline to remember, I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that pitch. When a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity, Henry Davis, the next to hit, takes ball one. No strike. One out. Base is empty. That one off the bad part of the bat. Just a lazy fly ball. Loftton racing over to make the catch. That’s a really nice play ranging back into the outfield for that catch. We all know those can be a little tricky, especially if the wind’s swirling around out there. Two down, base is empty. Here is Isaiah Ker Fa. Bottom of the zone and a cold strike. And a swing and a line drive into a right field. Kaggleó pulls that one down and that is that. Bucks go down quietly. They lead it one- nothing. And we’re back. Here’s the catcher. Ready for me. The catcher. Ready. Ready. And a strike right through there. That one in triple digits. [Music] Next offering is in for a strike. Well, it looks like he’s wanting to work the upper part of the strike zone. What does that mean? Top hand better be working for the hitters. Adjust that side a little bit. Give yourself a chance to hit. Swag and a miss. The velocity blasted it right past him. Dominating strike out there on just three pitches. And that’s what a good power pitcher can do to you if he’s hitting his spots, filling up the strike zone. Sometimes he bats over before it really begins. Jack Kaggle Leone steps in for the Royals in for a strike. 0 and one. [Music] One down. Base is empty. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Oh no. Davis snags it for the second out. Batting seven. The second baseman Nick Loftton. Nick Loftton steps in for the Royals. swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow right field. Reynolds makes the catch and that’ll do it. Offense held in check there. We play two full. It’s the Pirates one and the Royals nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. New inning getting started now. The third baseman Spencer Horowitz. That’s in there. It’s 0 and one. 01 [Applause] on the ground right side. He steps on the bat. Leadoff man retired here in the third. Designated hitter Andrew McCutchen. Here’s Andrew McCutchen to hit. One for one with a single so far. McCutchen goes 5 feet 11 in 190 lbs. He’s usually in right field, but today he’s getting the DH treatment and first offering is fouled off. Well, a nice day off for him. Not having to jog out to the outfield. Gets to be in the D8 spot. Be curious to see how he keeps himself in a rhythm. Not playing defense. That one outside now. One and two. And that one hit to first. And he handles it himself for the out. The right fielder number 10, Brian Reynolds. Two outs. Base is empty. Brian Reynolds the next to hit. 0 for one. He hit into a fieldielder’s choice his first time. And there’s a foul ball. Two out. Space is empty. Next offering is fouled back. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. And that one upstairs, ball one. Pretty standard high 02 fast ball right there. If you’re smart, you’ll look for something down in the zone, but not too far. Don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. No. And that one misses up and in. And the count’s even at two. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and in just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, you had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Isbel right there to make the grab. And that’ll do it. Back here in Kansas City, set for the bottom of the third. And of the play for Kansas City, John Ray. Now a pop up on the infield. Connor Falefa. Are you kidding me? Makes the catch and there’s one gone. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. And now it’s Kyle Isbel. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. That misses ball one. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. Swing and a miss as he was late that time. [Music] And it is two and one. Inside just missed. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] That’s ball four. Tried another fast ball but missed the spot. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about. Number six, Jonathan Indian at the plate. Lent off the bottom of the first with a walk. Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. That one hit to right. Reynolds pulls it down. That’s out number two. The batter number seven, shortstop, Bobby Witz Jr. Bobby Wit Jr. steps in for the Royals and he’s already singled in this game. [Applause] The shorts stop takes a ball. Tying run is at first here in the last half of the third. ball in the dirty [Music] fouls. One off to a two. [Music] And the pitch knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. Isbel the runner at first with two gone. Runner takes off. Spoils a two strike pitch. And he’ll see another. It’s in and out of his glove, but they get the out at first. And that’ll do it for the inning. So, one left for Kansas City. They’re down one- nothing. As we go to the top of the fourth, stepping in, Nick Gonzalez. Gonzalez. on the ground to third. India over to first in time. One up, one down. Now batting the center fielder, O’Neal Cruz. O’Neal Cruz, the next Pirate to hit. Doubled his first time. Well, here’s a deal not everyone remembers. Cruz was actually signed by the Dodgers in 2015, but Los Angeles dealt him to Pittsburgh in 2017 for Tony Watson. That’s a rare trade the Dodgers just might regret. Next offering is fouled back. [Music] swing and a miss as he was late. Threw that fast ball right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. That one missing inside. Base is empty, one away. Top half of inning number four in the dirt and now three and two. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. [Music] That one drilled left field. Base hit. And they have their first base runner since the first inning. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night. And just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. Here’s Tommy Fam. Lugo picks over and he’s back in easily. This might be a steel situation, but that’s not your average catcher behind the dish. You have to be careful here. That’s too low. And that’s ball one. 10. Man at first, one away. Next offering is in for a strike. 2-1. Get out of here. And there’s the strike to third. Might be two. Offbalance feed. There’s one. And that’s two. One hit in the inning, but nothing more than that. Midway in the fourth. It’s the Pirates one. And the Royals nothing. Back here at Kaufman Stadium, here’s the first baseman, Vinnie Pascantino. Pasquantino. Yeah, there’s the strike. Well, these Royals, as this game goes on, have to be more disciplined at the plate. So many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches. They’re chasing outside of the strike zone. You can’t do much of anything with those locations. And that’s been true again today. Connor Falefa throws to first in time and one gone in the fourth as they get the lead off. Man, Salvador Perez steps in for the Royals. Struck out swinging his first time. He can do it. Swinging a liner foul off to the right. And as a pitcher, when the hitters are swinging at everything, you feel no need to challenge inside the zone. You just keep working the corners and expanding that strike zone and beyond. And they just keep eating right out of your hand. One down, base is empty. Got him. That K is his third of the game. Gosh, here it is. Hit it. Three pitch strikeout on fast balls. Man, he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch right now. And now the catcher comes up to him, Freddy Fine. That’s down and in. Two down, nobody on. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth and a foul ball. There’s a 1-1. Chopped left side. Now a jump throw on the money. Nice play. Royals bats are quiet there and it remains one- nothing. All set for the start of the inning. And now the first baseman, Jared Triolo. Jared Triolo. Kansas City. Lugo back to work. Looked like it was a little bit up. You know, these Pirates digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. They’ve hit seven line drives already, and even though some of them have been for outs, there’s nothing wrong with delivering consistent hard contact. That’s almost always going to lead to positive results. Right through there for a strike. [Music] Just missed. Oh, they have had a hard time scoring in this one. The pitcher out there on the mound wants to keep attacking, make sure that they don’t get any confidence. And that is in for a strike. And it’s 32. Two strikes to a guy who’s already 0 for one with a punch out. The only guy in the lineup with that strike out, but you can’t get too relaxed. You still got to make good pitches to get him out. right side. Kaggle Leone squeezes it and there’s one down. The batter, the catcher, Henry Davis. So up next, Henry Davis 0 for one so far and first offering is fouled off. Chad swing. No appeal. Swing and a miss. One and two. One, two. [Applause] And that skips into dirt. Two balls, two strikes. caught him looking for the K. Frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter and I’m sure that’s going to sit on him for a little while. You want to be ready to hit the fast ball. Sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case right there. He swings and fouls one off [Music] strike two quickly in an 02 count. You got to figure out a way to shorten your path to the baseball. Put it in play somewhere. Then you got a chance. Next pitch is outside. One ball, two strikes, swing at a popup. Move it, move it, move it. He won’t get there. That should be extra bases. They’re still chasing it as he rounds second. And this is going to be a two out triple. You know, I was watching his rounds during batting practice today. So impressed with his ability to let the ball travel, go back up the middle and the other way. Sometimes when you step in the box during the game, you get a little anxious and you get away from that. But so far, I’ve seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation. So digging in, Spencer Horowitz for two in this one. And a strike in there. Come on. Next pitch is downstairs to the right side [Applause] and that is the inning. Pirates leave one but they lead it one to nothing. And we’re back. We head to the bottom of the fifth. And now the right fielder, Jack Kaggle Leone. Kaggle Leone. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. middle away. [Applause] Here’s a high-f fly ball out to center and a quick out number one. Up next for the Royals, the second base. Next up for the Royals, Nick Loftton flag to right his first time. swaying a highf fly ball. Well struck way back there. Splash landing. It’s into the fountains for a huge home run. What a blast. His second of the year. It’s 1-1. He ambushed him right there, Sigy. Yeah, swinging on that first pitch. And I think losing one over the fence is exactly what he had in mind as well. Anytime you have a pitch down the middle of the plate, the percentages go up for the hitter to do damage, even if it’s a pretty good sinker like that one. Nice piece of hitting there at the plate. [Applause] So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. So, up now for Kansas City, John Ray. That’s a slider for a strike. One down. Base is empty. That one’s in there. Oh, with two now. Strike three. Ski says sit down. Pretty much textbook pitching for the three pitch K right there. Jumped ahead 02 on two pitches he didn’t want to go after at the plate. Then knowing he’s going to be a little more aggressive trying to protect. He expands just out of the zone where he couldn’t do anything with it. He gets the strike out and keeps the pitches thrown to a minimum. Very nice. Here’s the center fielder, Kyle Isel. Fast ball is outside. One ball, no strike. Two down on swing and a fly ball. Well struck left field coming on his fam to make the play. But we’re all tied up thanks to this solo homer. All even at one a piece and welcome back to the ballpark. Top six. Here’s Cut to the dish. Let’s go. Light drive. Oh, he gives it. Wow, that was an awesome leaping catch. Great reactions, great athleticism, man. He snatched that thing out of the air and he robbed him of a base hit. Brian Reynolds here. And that drops in for a strike. This game has been so tight. Feels like the next team to score will win it. Next offering is fouled back. Now to short with sends it to first and they take care of Reynolds for the out. Up next for Pittsburgh, the second baseman, Nick Gonzalez. So, two down now and here is Nick Gonzalez. That one finds the zone and it’s on one. late with the swing there. I think he was sitting off speed there. Two strikes. A swing and a soft liner. Nice grab. So they make short work of him there. Top of the order, two up in the home half of the six. All tied 1-1. Back here in Kansas City, bottom of the six. Here’s the third baseman, Jonathan. India. India. That’s off the inside corner. And that is ball one. Well, these Royals just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. They’ve been chasing pitches outside the zone all game and it’s led to some frustrating moments. They’ve been fooled quite a bit today. Hard on the ground to first. Triolo steps on the bag and that’s one out as they get the leadoff hitter in the six. Short stop Bobby Wit Jr. The batter will be the shortstop Bobby Whit Jr. You know, Boo, this is a player with some serious speed. In 2023, he became the first player in 20 years to record two infield hits and an inside the park home run in the same game. [Music] Ball to strike. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. All tied up here in the bottom of the six. Foul ball still a one and two count [Music] and a foul ball. He stays alive. [Applause] One down. Base is empty. Swings through it and that’s a strikeout. Chris, third time through the order and a couple of quick outs for the starter. Yeah, he’s been very frugal today. Economical with the pitch count. Pasquantino. [Applause] And here’s the first baseman, Vinnie Pasquantino. [Applause] Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. No balls, one strike. That one ripped but foul. Strike three. Got him with the sweeper. So they go quietly there. We’re through six full. All tied 1-1. So, the Royals bring on a new arm, Lucas Ersid. And we all know about his slider. It’s just filthy, man. One of the better ones in the game, I’d say. Spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a ton. at the plate for Pittsburgh. O’Neal Cruz O’Neal Cruz. [Music] That one in triple digits. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Taylor Clark up and throwing. [Music] cut out and missed at 100 and one. And that’s strike two. Had a good eye there. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. Outside low. Two balls, two strikes. Swang and a ball lifted in the air. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out and there’s one down. Lefties can definitely be a little pull happy up there, especially with pitches that they see pretty well. That was a good example. He hooked an outside pitch, hit that ball in the air to right, just not with much authority. Fam in the box again. Takes the strike. No ball. One strike and a swing to miss. Wow. No fair right there. I mean that slider didn’t move to the very last moment. Incredibly difficult to pick that up. Just kind of have to tip your cap on that. Struck him out looking. Fast ball inside just freezes the hitter. I don’t think he was ready to pull the trigger. A lot of times hitters are looking away and that one locked him up. And now the first baseman Jared Triolo and a good fast ball to start him off. That’s strike one. [Applause] upstairs [Music] outside. Just missed. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count right down to shoot and it’s three and two. Goodness. I think he just took the best pitch he’s going to see in this at bat. You don’t get many like that in that location. I don’t know if you take that pitch against any pitcher out there on the mound. Swing and a miss and he got him and good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Nothing doing here for Pittsburgh. Still tied 1-1. Back here at Kaufman Stadium. Bottom of the seventh. Now it’s the DH. Salvador Perez. Perez. Down and away for ball one. And that’s him for a strike. And a strike. One, two. Just misses with that one. Really close pitch down around the knees there. And you could see him asking where it missed. probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. Now he breaks his bat and he bare hands it and they tag him out. Now batting the catcher, Freddy Furby. Freddy Furbine steps in for the Royals. [Applause] up the middle. Gonzalez in plenty of time to first. Two up, two down. The right fielder number 14, Jack. Jack Kagle steps in for the Royals. [Applause] fast for a strike. The guy’s going this good. He’s retired seven in a row. You got to step out of the box, fake bunt, do something to break it up. That one well upstairs. And it’s one and one. Late on that fast ball. And it really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today. Good fast ball, excellent slider, but they’ve not been able to commit to one velocity and stay there. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom of the seventh. Next pitch is outside. [Music] Good job to fight that one off. [Applause] And he swings over the top there. Swing and a miss. and he chases that one in the dirt in time. The two-3 strikeout ends the inning. Nothing doing for the offense that time. We look ahead to inning number eight. All tied 1-1. So they turn things over to the righty Taylor Clark coming on to face a righty here. And he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. Taylor, here’s the catcher to hit Henry Davis. Swinging a drive. This one is crushed. No doubt about it. And here in the late stages, they had the lead. Home run number five on the season. And now they’re out in front. It’s 21. One pitch, one swing, one home run. Yeah, you can say that’s efficiency right there. didn’t need much time in the box to make an impact. [Applause] Welcome to the game. First pitch out of the bullpen, a tough one. And you know, he’s just trying to get one in there for a strike. And on the other side as a hitter, it’s a great time to be aggressive and let it fly. It’s not what they were looking for when they turned to him, but now he’s got to find a way to reset. Isaiah Kinder Fa up to the plate. One for two. [Applause] Right through there for a strike. [Applause] on the ground right side. Loftton tosses to first. First out in the top of the eighth. The third baseman number two Spencer Horwitz. Now here is Spencer Horowitz. 0 for three in this one. Hit on the ground to the right side. Steps on first for the out. All day. The batter, the designated hitter, Andrew McCutchen. Here’s McCutchen. One for three. Give it to him, Royals. [Applause] Pitch misses. Ball one. Two down. Base is empty, but one run across and we’re in the top of the eighth. And the slider just misses. Ground ball up the middle. Loftton. That’s out number three. Cannonball coming and it’s now a two-1 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Henness Cabrera. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves. Late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. So, they’re making a move for a bat off the bench. Michael Garcia. They’re running out of time in this game trying to get something started here. [Applause] Check swing called strike. Well, on paper, it’s favorable to have a fairly quick inning here with two of the three hitters he’s set to face batting from the left side, same side he throws from. [Music] [Applause] Looking to get the tying run on base and that is out of play. Bullpen action for the Pirates. Dennis Santana loosening up in case he’s called upon by Derek Shelton. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Fouls it off. Still one and two. [Applause] Almost got him. Oh, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. And the tying run is on with a leadoff single. One of the hardest things to do in the game to stay mentally and physically ready for the big opportunity and he came through for his club right there. Now big hitter coming on for the Royals. Mark Canada. Big spot for him here. [Applause] Grounds one to short. dive and he’s got it. Throw to first and that’s a great play for the out. Great catlike reflexes right there. Lays out, knocks the ball down and then fires with that rocket arm all the way across the diamond. Man, put this guy in the mouth. [Applause] Kyle Isbel steps in for the Royals. He’s 0 for one. and fouled off. [Music] [Applause] So the tying run at second. No. [Applause] And a count one and two [Music] [Applause] and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. [Applause] And that’s in the dirt. [Applause] That one just missing inside. And it’s three and two. [Applause] That one down the line. And foul ball. Eighth pitch of the at bat coming up [Applause] and ball four to a board. Well, he took his chance at getting in the chase right there, but with first base open walked out that thing, he set up a double play opportunity if he can induce a ground ball. Two on, one out. Jonathan India steps in for the Royals. [Applause] at the dish. You’re looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning inning double play boo. Well, in this situation with runners on, you got to get ahead in the count so that you can dictate the rest of the at bat. Nice job right there. Right back to the mound. Could be an easy two on Gonzalez for one. Double play. What a twin killing to end the inning. One hit, one left through eight full. It’s the Pirates two and the Royals one. All set to start the ninth in this one. And now Ryan Reynolds Reynolds. Clark back to work. Clark in his fifth season, 31 years old, and he was a third round pick back in 2015. That clips the corner. A swing and a miss as he chases way out of the zone. got him looking. That’s a strike out. Oh man, just locked him up with that slider even though it caught a lot of the zone. And I think that tells you all you need to know about what he was looking for in the box and it clearly was not that pitch. Nick Gonzalez the next pirate to hit. [Applause] Left field. Cana sizing this one up. He makes the catch and there’s two down. Now batting the center fielder O’Neal. Two down. Base is empty. And now the center fielder O’Neal Cruz. [Applause] Yeah, that skips in the dirt. [Music] [Applause] This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. Firm mean sizes this one up. Has room and he makes the catch. Nothing doing here this half. 234 set to hit in the bottom of the ninth. It’s the Pirates two and the Royals won. Here comes the closer here in the ninth. Dennis Santana. Dennis is an extremely confident pitcher. He loves the pressure. Actually likes the oneun game better than a comfortable three-run save opportunity because that’s when he pitches his best. Well, one-run game leading off Bobby Whit Jr. That’s in there. And that is strike one. No ball. One strike. [Music] Ripped to right. Pulls it in. One away. Man, that’s so frustrating. You hit the ball hard. You understand the situation. You want to get on base and try to score that tying run, but no reward right there. And just going to have to sit on it. [Applause] Pasquantino in the box now. Takes strike one. Well, he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there. couldn’t pull the trigger and perhaps the best pitch you’ll see in this at bat to hit. A oneun lead and the home team trying to pull it out. Swing and a miss. And that is strike two. When you throw a fast ball by a guy like that, I imagine it’s got to feel incredible. Look for him to throw it again at some point. Outside low and the count is two and two. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] One down. Base is empty. Fouls it back with two strikes. flew open a little bit with that front shoulder, but was able to slow his back down just enough to make contact with that pitch, keep the at bat alive. [Applause] Ninth pitch of the at bat do next. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. Connor Falefa throws to first in time. Royals down to their final out. Good slider inside right there. Batter fighting to get there. Just rolled over it. Got the ground ball. Next is the designated hitter, Salvador Perez. Corner infielders guarding the lines trying to prevent extra bases. And that one fouled off. Two outs and it’s quickly nothing and two on the designated hitter. This could end it. Line drive ripped down the left side towards the left field corner around first. Digging for two. Throw comes into second. Not going to get him. He’s in there. That’s tremendous fight from him. And I know it’s got the dugout fired up down there. Down to the last strike. And he comes up with the kit to keep the game alive. It ain’t over yet. With the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth, Freddy Fine steps in for the Royals. That’s in there. 0 and one. 01. [Music] [Applause] Just missed. One-1. [Applause] Next offering upstairs. [Applause] Chopped to third. Horowitz. Throw to first. Ball game. And the Pirates strand the tying run on base to win it. Great pitchers duel in this one. You get to a certain point where each pitcher is trying to outdo the other. Go a little bit deeper into the ball game. And for these pitchers, it really came down to a few key at bats. This was a fun one to watch. And your final score here today, 2-1 for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami saying so long.
