MLB LIVE🔴 San Diego Padres vs Arizona Diamondbacks – Jul 9, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
Nestled between Tony Gwyn drive and Trevor Hoffman way. This is Petco Park. An NL West matchup on the show. It’s the Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Diego Padres’s. First pitch coming at you right after the break. So, almost ready to get underway. Today’s starting pitcher, you Darvish. Well, no doubt about it. He’s going to have to put together some consistently good performances in order to bring that erra down. Now, he’s got good stuff. He’s just got to be able to have confidence, trust it, and really go after hitters, not nibble. Trust that his stuff can have late life in miss barrels of bats. And now the right fielder, Corbin Carroll. Outside low and we’re underway down the inside corner for a strike. Here’s a fun fact on Corbin, and I I don’t know if everyone remembers their first jersey, but Carol certainly does. He used to rock an Ichiro Suzuki growing up. the one two and he grounds one to the right side. Croninworth, one up, one down. Now the Diamondbacks lineup as put together by Tory Lavello and one to watch of course their three-hole hitter Lordis Goreel Jr. Well, he’s an important part of this lineup for sure. I mean, there’s no doubt about it, Boo. It’s somebody that they try to feed off of. He does a lot of things, you know, very well up there at the plate. He’s got a presence about him and, you know, he’s a guy that you really kind of like to watch swing the bat. Peraldo Pomo batting with one down takes a strike and ball one. One out. Base is empty. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. Let’s go. Darbish delivers. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. Fouls it off. Still one and two. That one the other way. Snags it for the second out. Out in third. The designated hitter Mortis Gurel. Here’s Guriel. Come on. you. That one ripped. Touch is down. That’s a hit. Takes the turn. He’s digging for second. Now the tag at second and he’s out. Trying for two. And Arizona is set down. One, two, three. No score as we head to the bottom of the first. back here at Petco Park and our pitcher tonight, Zack Gallon. How about a report on him, Chris? Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. And it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way, somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. Fernando Tatiz Jr. leading things off and takes a strike. Swinging a foul out of play. And that’s outside two strike. And there’s a base hit to right field. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Batting seconds, the center fielder, Jackson. That ball was blasted, Boo. And as broadcasters, we can go weeks without seeing a ball hit 115 mph, which is what Statcast tells us there, man. He really got the bat through the zone and did not get cheated. Yeah, that ball was absolutely smoked. And now Jackson Merrill fast for a strike. One of the things amazing with Zack, think about the players he’s been traded with and for. In December of 17, he and Sandy Alcantra were dealt to Miami from the Cardinals for Marcel Ozuna. Then ultimately in July of 19, he went to Arizona for Jazz Chisum. Swing and a miss and a count is 0 and two. Man, he really sells the change up with that arm action. swinging and a miss. Had him out front for the strike out. I think he might have gotten away with one right there. That was a veryable pitch right over the heart of the plate. And I know that batter is kicking himself right now. Would like to get that pitch again. Just pulled the string on it and the deception gets him the K. Here comes Manny Machado. Come on, Manny. And the first offering is not close. Tatis runs swinging a ground ball. Toss to Naylor. No chance at the double play with the runner in motion. Let’s take a look at the Padres’s lineup. A really frustrating showing for them in their last game. Lots of traffic on the bases, but they left a ton of runners on base. Couldn’t cash in their chances, Chris. They had plenty of chances. There’s nobody to blame it on but themselves offensively. They just did a poor job converting in those situations. You have to figure out what’s your plan going to be. Maybe watch some tape from the last game. Make the adjustments. So, if you get those opportunities in this one, you got a much better chance of scoring some runs. Luis Aas at the plate with two away. Swings through that one. Misses inside. One ball, one strike. hit in the air left field and it falls. Run scores easily and the Padres’s strike first. It’s one- nothing. I was watching his rounds during batting practice today. So impressed with his ability to let the ball travel, go back up the middle and the other way. Sometimes when you step in the box during the game, you get a little anxious and you get away from that, but so far I’ve seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation. Here’s Gavin Sheets now, left-hand bat. And that drops in for a strike. Two outs. swing and a fly ball well struck left field and that’ll do it. So, one run in the inning on this base hit. It’s now one- nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here in San Diego, all set for the start of the Here’s Josh Naylor. Josh Naylor. Naylor measures 5′ 10 in, 27 years old, and he was born in Canada. Darvish back to work. Right through there for a strike. That’s a ball. Definitely a swing and miss slider down and in. He finished that really well. just couldn’t get him to offer at it. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. Back door breaking ball just missed right there. And boy, umpire didn’t give him the call. I bet you if he throws it again, hitter knows he’s going to have to swing it. Swung on, belted. That’s back and gone. And that should quiet this home crowd. His second home run of the series. It’s 1-1. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself. At bat after at bat, he’s that confident. Knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. So it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. Auo Suarez up to the plate now. Swinging a foul straight back. Suarez working on a massive campaign right now. Putting up some big home run numbers. Tied up here in the early going. Well, we’ve seen him flex some impressive power this season. And there’s still a lot of time to go. If he can keep up this pace he’s on, we could be in for something really special. Whips it to first. One away. That ground ball may have him back on track after the homer. Number 31, Jake McCarthy. Now, here’s the speed threat. Outfielder Jake McCarthy. This guy can absolutely fly. I think one of the faster players in baseball. In there for strike one. One down, base is empty. That misses the zone. Now one and two. Pretty standard high O2 fast ball right there. If you’re smart, but look for something down in the zone, but not too far. Don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. He’s dealing with a great two strike hitter right here. The strikeout is not automatic. Inside. Almost got it. Well, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the at bat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. One out, base is empty and a run in here in the top of the second. Hit on the ground to the right side and it goes just foul. Left-hand hitter waits and down on strikes he goes. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strikeout. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. Here is James McCann. Put that 600 slugging into context. The league average usually in the low 400s. Off the mark there. And that’s ball one. and a swing and a miss. Well, there’s a certain point where you have to commit to what you think you see and he guessed wrong right there. Nasty slider with just terrific bite at the end. McCann fouls one off. two down to swings through it and that’s a strike out. One scores in the inning coming on this solo home run all even now at 1-1. We head to the bottom of the second. So digging in now for San Diego, Zan Bogarts. Bogart and a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Little chopper rolls foul. just missed. Was good pitch there. Billy had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, get a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Sets him down on strikes. He’s got to be frustrated with that call. Well, definitely a borderline pitch right there. And he didn’t look too convinced as he headed back to the dugout. You know, those are tough ones to let go as a hitter, but with a human umpire calling balls and strikes, it’s always going to be on you to protect yourself with two strikes. Now, here’s Jake Croninworth. There’s the strike of the knees. Come on. Next offering in there for a strike. No balls, two strikes. And that one inside and it hit him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. Brooks, the next up for the Padres’s Brooks. Not even close there. And that’s ball one. Croninworth the base runner at first with one out. Rudder takes off. Ground ball up the middle. Gets it to first. No chance at the double play with the runner in motion. Batting night. The catcher. Martinez. Martine up to hit. Highfly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. Runner at second. Two down. Bottom half of inning number two. Next pitch misses outside now. One and two. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Swing and a miss. And he chases that one in the dirt. Gets to it onto first. And it’s in time for the third out. So that’ll end the inning. So, no runs on, no hits, no errors, and one left on. We head on now to the top of the third. All tied 1-1. And welcome back to the ballpark, Alec Thomas. Now, number five, Alec Thomas. That one fouled off. That to right and out number one on the grab. Batty. No, the second baseman Blaze. Bla1 Alexander getting ready to hit. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. One’s the count one swings through that one. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. and misses inside. Line drive and that gets down for a base hit. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. The right fielder number seven, Corbin Carroll. So the lineup flips over. Next to hit for Arizona, Corbin Carroll 0 for one so far. here. And that one is inside, man. At first, one away. That breaking ball drops in for a strike. Come on. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. Just missed. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. Darvis checks on the runner and he’s back in safely. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Three and two. Squirts away a little bit. Breaking ball in there. Got him looking. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. Really good battle right there. And that final pitch probably could have gone either way. He was hoping he get ball four. Instead, the umpire rings him up for the backwards K. Stepping in is the switch hitting shortstop. Peralo. He’s over one. And that one missing low. And that one ripped into right and that’ll do it. One left for Arizona. Still tied 1-1. And we’re back for the bottom of the third. And the batterielder will be Fernando Tatis Jr. Junior. Boo. Tatis is so athletic. He probably could have carved out a career in other sports if he wanted, but he grew up in a baseball family with baseball in his blood. And a slider misses down and away. And a breaking ball misses outside. Back to back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So, I think the confidence level is raised right here. drilled out towards left center field. That’s back. That one is gone. A massive home run. It’s 2-1. That was blasted. Absolutely no doubt off the bat. High fast balls, especially with good velocity, can be really hard to catch up to. But he stays tall. His top hand works extremely well and he absolutely clobbered it. Now the number two hitter Jackson Merrill struck out swinging his first time and that one fouled off. Ripped to short, slings it across. One gone. Bottom of the third inning. The third baseman number 13, Manny Mach. Here’s Manny Machado now. Grounded out his first time. And that is in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. And that one is inside ball one. One run across in the frame so far here in the last half of the third. That missed by a lot. And the count’s even at two. Swing and a miss. struck him out. He’s notched four strikeouts now. Well, pitchers have become so much better at commanding that high fast. It used to be that a lot of pitchers didn’t like to throw it because it throw off their release point and their mechanics and they’re aimed at keeping everything at the knees, get ground balls, but because hitters get a swing path that can lift balls at the knees up in the air and over the fence, this pitch has come back into play and they are doing some special things with it. Not sure if he was expecting for the pitcher to come right at him, but he got a nice cookie there and just watched it the entire way. In the air, left field down the line that gets down for a hit and that extends the inning. The left fieldielder stepping in for San Diego, Gavin Sheets. He’s 0 for one. And first offering is fouled off. Arise off of first with two away. That one ran inside. Almost got him. Foul ball there. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Now five strikeouts for him on the mound. The Padres’s get one in the inning with a solo blast. And it’s now a two-1 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Start of the fourth and it’s Lordis Goreel Jr. Lordis Guriel. And that is in for a strike 0 and one. Well, these Diamond Bats doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of him. He’s only giving up one run, but the starter pitch count is starting to get up there. And that might be the best news yet for this offense. The O2 one and that swing. It’s a strike out. And now it’s Josh Naylor. He’s already homerred in this game. Josh Naylor. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage. And that might be the case today. Blind into right. Two lay down. Up next to the Diamond Base Suarez up to hit now. And that’s him for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Generally second, third time through the lineup, you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Looks like he’s doing a nice job of not close with that one. And the count is one and one. The one-1 is fouled off. One, two now. And that’s in the dirt. Two strike. Swing and a miss. Got him to go up the ladder for the K. So 1, two, three go to Diamondbacks and our score remains 2-1. Back here at Beckard, here is Xander Bogart. Xander Bogart. That pitch gets the corner. That’s strike one. Over 80% of his first pitches are strikes. You’re doing that, you could have a really good day out there on the mound. The other way and a base hit. And a good start to the inning. The batter number nine, second baseman Jake Croman work the next up for the Padres. Swings through that. You know, these Padres’s showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. They’re doing a good job of working the pitch count and they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well. and a foul ball. Still relatively early, but with a pair of runs already on the board, the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set him up to do more damage later in this game. One ball in the dirt. One and two now. What a stop. The feed for one. He’s out and two. What a play for me. That’s one of the toughest double plays to turn on the infield. The first base has to get inside, create a throwing lane to hit that middle infielder to start the double play and then from there completing it back to first. Really good job all the way around. And now it’s going to be Trenton Brooks. First offering misses badly for ball one. Two outs. Base is empty. keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Popped up to the left into foul ground. McCann pulls that one down and that is the third out of the inning. Nothing doing there for the Friars as they’re unable to add to their 2-1 lead. Back here in San Diego and stepping in is the speedy Jake McCarthy. McCarthy Darish back to work. just missed. You know, these Dbacks just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. Chasing pitches has been a big part of the story. We’ve seen it quite a bit today. It’s been tough for them to make contact at times and it just doesn’t look like they’re seeing it very well as a group. Fouled off left side and on the mound. You know, confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses. He’s had him eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game. Oh, that got away from him. And he’s going to reach on a hit by pitch to lead off the end for the diamond bats. James McCann in now. He was a strikeout victim his first time. Darvis checks on the runner and he’s back in easily. right through there for a strike. And I know you want to be patient as a hitter, but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight. And he got one right there, but left the bat on his shoulder. Rolled softly, but that goes foul with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. And there’s one down. The center number five, Alec Thomas. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Alec Thomas flyed to right his first time. Pitch misses. One and0. Way to lay off that pitch down. That misses the zone and it’s two and0. Last two pitches have been down in the zone. Pitcher clearly trying to get that ground ball double play, but in this count he’s going to have to give in, elevate his pitches, and get back into this at bat. Darvish kicks, delivers. And that one is in for a strike. Two, one strike. And that is out of play. McCarthy leads off first with one away. Misses full countdown. That’s a really good take. Bla1 Alexander in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. 3-2 broken bat and it’s popped up and there are two outs. Now that the second base, Blaze Alexander. Now up next for Arizona, Bla1 Alexander. One for one with a single so far. And that one is downstairs. Ball one. Tying run is at first. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Darish keeping him close. And the one run around to go. Pitch misses. Safe at second. And he easily steals the bag. Good hitters count the 200 and another ball. Love how this guy grinds out at bats. I mean, he’s down there at the bottom of the lineup in the nine hole, but he’s worked himself into a really good hitter count trying to pick up a two-out RBI. Man on second, two down. That catches the top part of the zone. That’s strike one. As a pitcher, you know the runner on second is ready to push things with his speed. A base hit is probably going to be a big run. So, you really have to execute on the mount. and a 3-2 and ball four to a board. The right fielder number seven, Corbin Carroll. This is Corbin Carroll for two in this one. one. This one in the dirt save and both runners move up on the wild pitch. No trouble moving up to second on that play with the ball getting that far away from the catcher. Nice job to take advantage of the wild pitch. Two outs, two in scoring position. Fast ball for a strike at 95. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen for San Diego. Jason Adam getting loose out there. Estrada also getting ready. That’s off the mark now. Two balls in a strike. That’s a bullet, but it goes foul. Well, that ball was hit pretty hard and sure had home run distance, but if you’re the pitcher out there on the mound, you execute it. Just a long strike. You go after him and finish him off. Duke skips in and excellent work to corral that one. Could have been dangerous. Two on, two outs. Out towards right center field. Tatis after it and that’s the third out. Diamondbacks strand a pair. They’re down two to one. And welcome back to the ballpark. We head to the bottom of the field. Now it’s going to be Martine Maldonado. Maldonado. That’s in there. That’s strike one. Maldonado measures 6 feet even, 230 lbs, and he was born in Puerto Rico. And the dirt one and one that one missed. Two-1 swing and a foul straight back and a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball up next. So with one down, it’ll bring up Fernando Tatis Jr. He’s already homered here in this one. Junior Fast ball for a strike. Go and one. One more time. Oh, that pitch is out. That one missing inside. Base is empty, one away. Last half of inning number five. Next offering is in for a strike. Good job to fight that one off right side. Naylor. The flip to the pitcher covering and they take care of Tatis for the out. The center fielder number three, Jackson Merrell. Two down, base is empty. Jackson Merrill the next up for the Padres’s. Swing and a popup in foul ground and that ends the inning. Padres’s down in order, but they still lead it two to one. Now pitching for new pitcher now, Nick Pavetta. Still a lot of game left and this game could go either way. So this is a big opportunity for him to get some important outs and try to help carry this lead into the later innings. And now Pommo the short stop. Heraldo Purdomo pitch is in there. Strike one. I’ve gotten to call some incredible NLDS games here at Petco Park between the Padres’s and their fierce rivals, the LA Dodgers. NLDDS game four here in 22 when the Padres’s knocked off LA and then game four in 2024 when the Dodgers started their comeback and eventual run to the World Series. One of the great fan environments in baseball. That one down the line and it’s just fouled. That was close. swinging a popup and there’s one away. Here’s Lordis Guriel Jr. One for two. That’s a strike thanks to the sweeper. The Diamondbacks down by a run and we’re the top half of the sixth. Swing and a miss. And he was fooled. Swing. And this one’s bounced to the ground in plenty of time to first. And that quickly two away. Now batting the first baseman, Josh. Josh Naylor stands in now for the Diamondbacks and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. And there’s a foul ball. That one not close. One and two to count. That one 95 to finish him off. Nothing across here this half. Hard of the order. 345 coming up. It’s the Padres’s two and the Diamondbacks one. And we’re back. Bottom of the six. So digging in now for San Diego. Manny Machado. Machado. And that misses. And that is ball one. That one pushed foul. Next offering misses down and away. Swing and a ball popped up. Naylor makes the catch and there’s one gone. The designated hitter number four, Luis. Luis Arise stands in first offering is fouled off. Swing and a miss as he was late. Double barrel action in the bullpen. John Curtis getting ready to go. Woodford getting cranked up as well. Next pitch is outside. That’s inside. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. Lifted in the air left field pretty well struck and makes the grab. Out number two. The left fielder number 30 G. Two outs. Base is empty. Gavin Sheets will hit next. All right. That misses the zone. Ball one. He swings and fouls one off. Two outs. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. The batter number two, shortstop Xander. So, a man at first. Here’s Bogards now. San and a strike. That curveball’s been a big pitch for him today. He’s been able to get ahead in the count with it. He’s also been able to use it to put guys away. Next offering is fouled back. close one. Doesn’t get the call at a count. One and two. Sheets the runner at first with two gone. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. And a ball in two strikes in the dirt. Throw to second. Not in time. He’s there easily. So, a wild pitch allows the runner to advance. Nobody on defense feels great right now. The pitcher feels responsible for missing so far outside. And the catcher wishes he could have done more to try to stop it. man at second. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. Highf fly ball out towards left field. McCarthy going back on it and it’s gone into the lower basket of the Western Meadow building and X leaves the yard and they add a couple more. It’s 4-1. He kept swinging and it paid off. Well, that was a battle move and he just kept taking his cuts. He finally squared one up. Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate, but he was ready to turn on the inside. Fast ball. So direct to the pitch. Absolutely blasted out of this ballpark. Here comes the skipper. And we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Zack Galler out of the game. It’s a three-run game and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. Now, Jake Woodford gets the ball now. And he’s got a big time breaking ball to contend with. Hitters going to have to pick it up early if they’re going to have any chance. Here’s the second baseman, Jake Croninworth. Base is empty. Two away, but two runs are in here in the bottom of the sixth. That’s outside. That one to first. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Two across on this San Diego homer. It’s now a 4-1 ball game. Major League Baseball is on the show. Back here at Petco Park, we go to the top of the seventh. Here’s the third base, Au Heno Suarez. And a swing and a miss there. Pitching has been pretty dominant in this one, but you got to be careful not working with too big a lead. They could get right back in this ball game if you’re not careful. Next offering is outside. swings through that one for strike two. Threw that fast right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. Pitch misses and the count is even. Two and two. on the ground right side and that’s just foul in there. Got him looking and that one split the plate. frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter. And I’m sure that’s going to sit on him for a little while. You want to be ready to hit the fast ball. Sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case right there. And that one is lifted in the air. Merryill on the move. Two up, two down. Two down, base is empty. James McCann stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Just missed. Next offering in there for a strike. Strike one. Two down, nobody on here in the top half of inning number seven. And a big swing and a miss. One ball, two strikes. Next offering upstairs. swings and misses at the breaking ball in the dirt. Maldonado to first in time. The two-3 strikeout ends the inning. Set for the last half of the seventh. Stepping in for San Diego, Trenton Brooks. And that curveball drops in there for a strike. Next offering is in for a strike. Comes up empty as he chases that one in the dirt. McCann fires to first in time to get him. One away in the strikeout. Here’s the catcher by Martin Maldonado. Martin Maldonado. There’s the strike. Base is empty. One away near the bottom of the seventh. on the ground to the left and foul ball. Hit in the air left field. McCarthy settles under it and puts the squeeze on that one. And there’s two down. Now batting right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. to hit here. He blasted one out earlier in the third. Just a solo home run but an important swing of the bat in this game. We’ve already seen him do it once. Can he do it again? drilled in the air out towards right center. Carol makes the grab and that’ll end the inning. They hand the ball over to a new arm, Jason Adam. And we all know about his slider. It’s just filthy, man. One of the better ones in the game, I’d say. Spin rate’s very high. Just breaks a ton. Adam. And now the center fielder, Alec Thomas. Centerielder, Alec Thomas. And that’s way high. And it’s one and0. Movement in the bullpen. Robert Suarez, the closer of the staff, is throwing right through there for a strike. Big at bat right here. He did the team thing, took until he got a strike. Now he’s got to go to work. Shorten up that swing a little bit. Do whatever it takes to get on base. Let’s go way high. Got to keep things airtight defensively right here. On your toes, ready to make a play. If you can get this to the ninth with a three-run lead, it should be a W. Ball inside. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. And boy, that was the pitch. 3-1. You want to be really aggressive on the fast ball. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Up next for the Diamondbacks, the second base. Now it’s the second baseman, Bla1 Alexander. Adam in his fifth season, 33 years old, and they went out and made a trade for him last season. Fast ball in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. There it was. A high velocity fastball in the zone. I think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter. He’s got good stuff. Pitch inside the zone and trust it. Slap the other way. Foul. Thomas aboard here at first with nobody out. Outside low and a count one and two guy swinging. And now here is Corbin Carroll over three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. And a foul ball. Keep it on the ground. Turn two. That’s down and in. One and one. The Padres’s leading by three and we’re in the top of the eighth. Let’s do it. Next pitch is outside. Just missed. Fast ball for a strike. Finish him. Ground ball right side. Could be two. He flips it to second in time onto first. Safe. So they get one. But a really nice try there. Heraldo Purdomo digs in now. 0 for three in this one. And that one upstairs. The one foul ball. stays alive. Two outs. Throw in holds the lead runner at second. Two on now with two away, man. Singi, he hit that ball right on the sweet spot. According to Stackcast, the exit VO 110 mph. Yeah, Boo. I mean, that right there is an absolute missile. And he just put a great swing on it. Squared it up perfectly. Those are the ones that feel really good. And the Padres’s manager making his way towards the mound as he will make the move. Jason Adam done for the night and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this now. So, the closer summon from the bullpen, Robert Suarez, and he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits, period. And the batter now, Lordis Goreel Jr. One, no strike. Griel gets a piece. All season long, he’s racked up a number of saves. And sometimes the adrenaline doesn’t get high enough until there’s a runner or two on base. Just about gives his skipper a heart attack, but that’s where he functions best. Tying run at the plate. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. fights that one away. Still one and two. The tying run at the plate. Bows it off. Still one and two. Five foul balls in a row. I have no idea what that feels like, but you got to love this battle. Just wondering who’s going to blink first. Eighth pitch of the at bat coming up. Highf fly ball out towards left center. Merrill sizes this one up and that’s the third out. Diamondback strand a pair and they trail it 4-1. Now pitching for now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. John Curtis. Pretty tight game. So they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. So digging in, Jackson, the center fielder, Jackson Merrell. First pitch doesn’t find a zone. And there’s a ball. One strike. Next offering is in for a strike. And that one is inside, gets a piece and stays alive. You can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch, but just a little tardy on the fast ball and it stays fair. Now he’ll turn for second and he greetss the new arm from the bullpen with a double. Showed a lot of fight with two strikes in that AB. Textbook bat control right there. got a pitch on the outside. Saw it deep into the zone and just barreled it up. Went the other way for the knock now. Machado up here. And there’s the strike. 0 and one runner in scoring position. Nobody out here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. And a strike on the outside edge. Action in the pen down there. Jaylen Beats up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. man at second. Runs it up to 96 to record the punch out. Well, I think that’s a case of overthinking right there. Got three straight fast balls looking in the O2 count just to pull it back. Next to hit, Luis Arise. Come on. First pitch just misses. And misses inside. And that gets the top of the zone for a strike. San Diego. The next offer misses. They’re now three in one. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position. He’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. Carol makes the grab for the second out. The left fielder number 30, Gavin Sheets. Gavin Sheets, the next up for the Padres’s. One for three. He gets the intentional walk here and now a force at any base with two gone. The batter number two, short and a dangerous hitter coming up to hitander Bogarts. And that’s the inside edge. And that’s ball one. Well, this is a critical spot for both the pitcher and the hitter. You can learn a lot about a guy by how he handles these pressure situations. Next offering is in for a strike. The short stop takes the ball. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. One more time. Bogard swings through that one. Bell and those hitters count sometimes can be a little too aggressive and a good pitcher will play off of that. He’s got to get a better pitch to hit. That one almost got him. Straighten him up a little bit. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. lifted to left center way back there and that is gone. Another homer, his second home run of the game and they add to the lead. It’s 71. He absolutely crushed that one. No doubt about that one. We knew it wasn’t coming back. Well, he saw a lot of pitches in this at bat and in this 3-2 count, he got something he could handle. Wasn’t fooled. Did a really nice job in approaching and attacking that baseball. Manager out of the dugout now. And it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. John Curtis won’t go any further. And as he heads for the dugout, we’ll take a quick break. New arm on the mound when we get back. Now pitching the new pitcher in the game, Jaylen Beats number bringing in the lefty with a left-handed hitter coming up to hit. Classic bullpen move right here. So we’ll see how it works out. Two outs, nobody on. Jake Cronin work the next up for the Padres’s. And that one in there at the knees for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. And that one upstairs. Ball one. No, he’s not afraid to fall into a two- strike count. Knows the strike zone very well. So much so that I think umpires will look at him and determine whether it’s a ball or strike if he swings or not. Foul ball still a one and two count. That one just misses. Good eye right there. Wow, this guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. Fights it off. He’ll see another. Here comes a 3-2. Got him looking. And that is that. So, a three-run shot for the Padres’s here. Last chance coming up for the Dbacks. This game’s a bit of a blowout. Sing, let’s talk about something random. Let’s do it. singing. Did anybody ever give you the silent treatment? I don’t remember that they did. I think they were pretty cool with me in terms of celebrating my rookie year. First home run came in Anaheim against the Angels. And I always love to watch now though, especially when that player is unsuspecting. You know, some guys, they they’ve been around long enough to know there’s a good chance I’m going to get the silent treatment, but when that player’s maybe been grinding it out for a little while and finally gets that home run, is expecting the big lift coming into the dugout and they just stonewall him, it’s awesome. That misses and the count is one and two. Every once in a while they’ll work that same trick on a veteran player. if say he’s been cold or hasn’t hit a home run in a long time. And that’s always fun when you don’t see it coming at all and everybody in the dugout goes crickets on him. Yeah. And and that veteran player’s usually got a response for those individuals with one or the other hands. Brooks steps on the bag and they get the leadoff man in the ninth. Now batting the third base, Aueno Suarez. So up next, Au Heno Suarez 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. That was your worst start one year. Didn’t you start like three for 33 or something? Oh, it was awesome. It was I mean it was awful. Not awesome. It was awesome for awesome. It was awesome for pitchers facing me, but it was awful for me. It sounded like some type of deal at a fast food restaurant like 3 for 33 or something. The 1-1 is fouled off. The Dbacks with a lot of ground to make up here in the top of the ninth in the air right side. Tatis after it. No trouble here. Puts it away for the eye. And there’s two down. Diamondbacks down to their final out. And now Jake McCarthy. That one’s in there. Strike one. Just missed. headed towards the corner and that is a foul ball. The Diamondbacks down to their final strike. Got him. And that’s the ball game. Good win by six runs. Always nice when you can win by a touchdown or a couple of field goals. Want to keep that momentum going knowing the offense can score at will. Bring it into the next one and get another W. And a 71 finish in this one for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shiy. We’ll see you soon. What the move?
