Detroit Pistons Summer League STARTS Friday with Chaz Lanier and Bobi Klintman With The Most To Gain
The Detroit Pistons Summer League starts tomorrow and Chaz Laneir has the most to gain of any Detroit Piston on the roster. We’ll break it down today’s episode, Locked on Pistons podcast. Let’s go. I think it’s a pretty winnable group and I think it should be a good measuring stick to know where the Pistons are at next year with especially some of the teams that are in there. We’ll break it down a little bit later. And also Jaylen Dur shooting threes. We’re getting a bunch of clips from him training, practicing, taking pull-up mittis, taking threes. Is this something we should realistically expect to be a part of his game moving forward? We’ll break it all down, but we’re going to start with summer league, which starts tomorrow. The Detroit Pistons will be taking on the New York Knicks tomorrow. I’m recording this on Thursday, so Friday, they will have their first summer league game against the New York Knicks. And let me know in the comments section down below or over on Twitter, Cucker Hill. What are you guys most looking forward to in summer league? What player are you most interested in watching? What development do you want to see? Let me know all that again, comment section down below or over on Twitter, Cuckah Hill. Now, there’s a few things that I’m going to be watching for for this summer league with the Detroit Pistons, but I think there’s there’s one at the very top that nothing else even really comes close. Chaz Laneir is by far the player I am most excited to watch and I think has the chance to make the biggest difference in summer league. pass was taken in the second round and a week two weeks after that they lose Malik Beasley. Now they have gotten Duncan Robinson back in a signing trade for Simony Fonte which by the way Simony Fonte apparently requested a trade out of Detroit because he didn’t play in the playoffs this past year. Well if you would have played a little better I’m assuming JB would have played you but no hard feelings. Um, anyways, Chaz Laneir was drafted with the elite ability of movement shooting, being one of the best, if not the best shooter in his draft class, and the Pistons just lost one of, if not the best three-point shooter of the last season. If there’s any player that has the chance to try to come in and fill that kind of need, it is Chaz Laneir. Chaz Laneir is an older prospect. He is not a young guy. He is not 18. He is not 19. He’s not 20. He is an older prospect. played four years in college. For me, if Chaz Laneir is going to show that he can make an impact at the NBA level, if Chaz Laneir is going to prove that he was worth the swing in the second round and has a chance to be an NBA player, to me, you have to come out and play really well in this summer league. As an older prospect, you should be able to more than hold your own in the summer league. I understand everyone likes to say and it is true to a certain extent obviously that you don’t want to read too much in the summer league good or bad and again that is true to a certain extent but when you are a 23 24 year old prospect going up against summer league guys that aren’t all the most of these players are not in the league if you can’t hold your own against them that gives some serious concerns about will you ever be able to hold your own in the NBA you’re an old a younger prospect a guy who still needs to get bigger a guy who still needs to get stronger maybe doesn’t know the game as well, needs to learn, that’s fine. Those guys are raw. But when you are are an older, you’re supposed to be a vet kind of not not a vet, but like a well experienced player, a smart player, you should be able to go out in summer league and hold your own. And if Chaz Laneir goes out there and he’s shooting 40% from three, shooting playing tremendous, shooting well from three and playing really good defense, something he spoke about recently that he thinks he has to do to remain in the NBA in the future, and I think that is the truth. Um, if he can go out there and just light it up from deep and play good defense, I think that will leave a good taste in all Pistons fans mouths, I think everyone will feel a lot better about him moving forward. And who knows, will Chaz be able to crack the lineup? Well, listen, if he can go out there and prove that he can be a 3 and D guy, a three a movement three-point shooter who can play defense, those guys are valuable. Those guys are usable, especially when you just lost the best three-point shooter in the league this past year, or arguably one of the best in the league this past year, Malik Beasley. So, I think Chaz Laneir has easily the most to gain here. Chaz is an older prospect. He has to play well here. You can’t go out there in summer league and struggle. It’s not going to say great things about him if he goes out there and struggles as an older prospect in summer league. Go out there, play well, dominate in summer league. Don’t need to go out there and score 30, but shoot 40% 38% from deep on heavy volume. Play good defense. And who knows, maybe in a few months he gets a chance to crack the rotation. Maybe this puts a good thought or a good idea or gives a good impression to the coaching staff, to the front office that maybe this guy might be able to play. Maybe he’s able to fill in some of the the missing the missing stuff we left from Malik Beasley. I think Chaz Laneir has the most to gain by far. He’s who I’m most looking forward to watch. He has to be able to hold his own in this summer league. Um the next player obviously I think most people will be watching for, I know Ron Holland’s playing, but he’s not up on my list. It’s Bobby Clintman. The Pistons do not have a backup four on this roster right now. They just don’t have a four. Now, Bobby is a four, but he did not play at all this past year. Didn’t have the greatest season in G-League either. Didn’t look the best in his limited minutes during the season and garbage time either. Bobby was the was the Pistons second or Tan’s second pick he’s made. He needs to come out here in summer league and look a lot better. And the same thing for Chaz. He needs to come out here and look like an NBA player in summer league. If the Pistons can have an in-house answer to their backup for issue, that would be fantastic. You don’t have to go out and acquire a guy or give up assets. If you already have that guy in house and he’s developing and you trust him, that would be huge. So, to me, yes, while summer league, you don’t want to read too much into it. If they go out and play super well, no one’s coming out and saying they’re a superstar. But I do think guys who are older, especially a guy who’s in his second year like Bobby Clement, if he comes out and he struggles and he doesn’t look comfortable, that’s not saying great things about his future in the NBA. Now, if he comes out and plays well, that doesn’t say he guaranteed he’s going to be an NBA rotation player, but you feel like, okay, there’s a chance. There’s a chance there. So, I’m watching to see if Bobby can play well, if he can make some open shots, if he can play defense, keep the ball moving. I know he tried to do a lot of ball handling in the G- League and that didn’t go the best. I’m interested to see does he try to do a lot of that ball handling during the summer league. Is it something he’s continued to work on, believes he can do? I’m just interested to see everything about him in the summer league and for him to prove that he could be an option come preseason, come training camp for the Pistons, lack of a backup for if, knock on wood, uh, Tobias Harris were to go down. And then obviously we wrap it up with Ron Holland. Ron Holland’s going to play. I don’t think he plays more than one game. I wouldn’t be surprised if he just played one half. Like I I’m kind of shocked he’s even playing to be honest because he was a rookie who played in the playoffs. Um but in the in the time that we do get to see Ron, I would like to see Ron just work on things or or do things that he’s not good at. If I was Ron, I would be out here only doing things that I’m not good at. I’d be taking threes. I’d be taking pull-up jumpers. I’d be driving with the intent to find an open player. I already know I can drive and finish. I already know I can drive and dunk on guys. I know I can drive and draw a foul and finish over guys. I know I can do all that, but let me go out there and drive with the intent to read the defense and playmake. Let me take some more threes. Let me take some more pull-up jumpers. Let me work on those facets of my game in the most probably the best like I would say summerly probably is the best like five on five live game experience they’ll get in the summer. I know some of the pickup games, uh, you know, the the what is it? Rico Hines. I I I know those get pretty intense, but I I’d have to assume that summer league probably is the most it’s probably the closest to legit five on five play that a lot of these guys are going to get. So, why not use this time to practice and experiment with it in this atmosphere? So, that’s what I’d expect from Ron. I wouldn’t I don’t want to really see Ron come out here and and just take layup after layup after layup on drives because I know he can do that already. I’d like to see you focus on what you can’t do um and try to use it in a live atmosphere. So, let me know comment section down below or over on Twitter, Cucker Hill. What are you guys most looking forward to from Summer League tomorrow? We will have an episode after Summer League on Friday after recapping it and then I will have a a breakdown on my substack breaking down the good or the bad that we saw from the summer league from these three players I just mentioned. Uh but yeah, again, like I said, let me know how you guys feel about it. Comment section down below or over on Twitter, Cuckoo Hill. Coming up, the Detroit Pistons group uh I think they’re group B, right? Um yeah, group B for the inseason tournament has been revealed. I believe they should feel like they can win this and it should be a really good measuring stick for where they are next season. We’ll break down who’s in this group and why the Pistons have such a good chance in my opinion. Coming up, ever wish managing your money felt easier? With Monarch money, it can. Um there was a picture posted today. Um Pistons talk tweeted it out. I don’t know where he got it from. I’m assuming it’s from an Instagram post or something. Um but it’s a picture of Assar and Amen at one of their uh basketball camps in California. Assaar definitely looks bigger. One 100%. Asar looks a lot bigger. His chest looks a lot bigger, shoulders look a lot bigger, looks way stronger. Um I I’m looked it up on um on basketball reference how much they say he weighs. Now I know they lie a lot of times like for example like I think they had there was a player in the Pistons they had at 205 for like four years and he was very clearly not 205. So it’s hard to trust the way that they say that they are. Um but it says that he’s 205. I definitely think he’s going to be around two. It looks like he’s around 215. That’s why I would say 213 215 is what it looks like to me. I think that’s a good weight for him to be playing. I think this is a good size. He looks a lot stronger. Um so I I it’s not too I know I mentioned that I was worried about them him bulking up too much. He’s This is what we were talking about in the podcast the other day. He just looks stronger. He doesn’t look like he just got super wide and all of a sudden he’s trying to get super bulky. He just looks a lot stronger. a lot a lot more filled in um and just stronger. So, I think this will be good for him. Um he’s been working hard. Also, there’s a lot of people that were saying like they couldn’t tell which one are and which ones I’m in. Let me tell you guys right now quickest way to figure out which one. First of all, I can just kind of look at the picture and kind of tell the difference between them. Now, I’ve seen Assar a few times now in person. And obviously I got to interview him a few times, but like the quickest way to like tell the difference between these guys, a man has a much more defined jawline and has more of like a box sh uh box head shape. It’s a lot more defined, whereas a SARS is not nearly as defined. That’s the quickest way. Um I I figure out the difference between the two quickly. Just look at their jawline. Like look at their head shape and look at their jawline. Amen is very defined. Assaars is not. Um so that’s the quickest I know. I think Assaar also has like a birth mark on his right cheek that kind of gives you like a a go-ahad on who’s who as well. But I see a lot of Pistons fans in the comments like I can’t tell who’s who. But that that’s how I uh that’s how I determine who’s who. But anyways, let’s get into it now. Um yesterday the NBA revealed their inseason tourney groupings. Now if you are unaware of what this is and haven’t been aware of the inseason tourney over the last I believe it’s been two years now, right? Two, three years. Um, just a quick breakdown if you happen to not understand it. Each conference gets three groupings. You, it’s kind of like a round robin. You play against your group multiple times. The team with the best record in that group moves on to the next stage. Um, so the West has a West ABC, East has a East ABC. Um, each group has five teams in it. Now, it sounds like they might be adding two teams to the NBA next season, so I or next off seasonason. So, I wonder how they do it here. It would have to be like 5.56, right? Um, or maybe they just split. Maybe they make four groupings. Who knows? Um, make four groupings of four. Either way, that’s just random thought that came to my mind. Um, the Pistons are in group B, and in their group are the Boston Celtics, the Pistons, the Orlando Magic, the Brooklyn Nets, and the Philadelphia 76ers. Now, last year, the Pistons were in a group with the Indiana Pacers, the Bulls, and and the Bucks. I’m forgetting I think the fifth one was Toronto. Um, I could be wrong about Toronto, but I’m sure about the other ones. and the Pistons beat the Pacers and they got pretty far um and ended up playing the Bucks in the finale for their grouping. Now, they got blitzed by the Bucks. Um but they played well in the groupings. They beat Indiana, who was in the finals this year. Um coming into this year, the Pistons are expecting their young guys to get better. They’re coming off a season where they just won two playoff games. They’re coming off a season where fans, a lot of fans have expectations that they’re going to take another step. I think this is I think this is a perfect grouping for Pistons fans to get an idea of where this team’s at. I am very happy with this grouping. I see some people have already said this looks like it could be a pretty tough grouping. One, I don’t know if it’s going to be that tough. Like Brooklyn’s not going to be good. Philly, I can’t trust Phillyy’s ever going to be healthy. So, if they are healthy, it could be tough. Um Orlando’s going to be tough and Boston you always got to respect, but as of right now, I just don’t know how good their roster actually is going to be. But the reason why I believe that this is such a good grouping for the Detroit Pistons and it’s not just good for the fans, but good for the team to measure themselves up and see where they’re at. I believe it’s like end of November, early December is when these games take place. Um, yeah, beginning at the end of October through November 28th and then they have like the tourney games actually happen in December. Um, it’s it’s a good grouping to me because there’s competition here. You’re not just in a group of softballs. Like for example, group C. I feel like the Knicks got it super easy here. Like the Knicks have the Bulls who I don’t think are going to be good. The Heat who I don’t think are going to be good and the Hornets who I don’t think are going to be good all in their group. And the Bucks if who knows what the Bucks are. Like that group is too easy. Like I if the Knicks come out of that it’s not some oh revolution. It’s like oh my god you were tested so much whatever blah blah. And I’m sure the Knicks probably don’t care as much about the NC tourney but a team like the Pistons should. they should care about the inseason tourney and they’re if they were to come out of this group it means they played well against the Orlando Magic who are I think going to be a contender in the East who just got uh Desmond Bane and has Paulo and has Fron and has all these players um Jaylen Suggs this really good team that hopefully will be healthy this I think everyone would like everyone to be healthy this year um if you come out of that you gota feel good about yourself look we measured up against the Orlando Magic They’re supposed to be everyone’s contender. Darling, we played well. We may we we came out of this. We should feel good about this matchup in the future. Boston, I understand that they’re not where they were. But Boston will still have that level of respect that when you beat them, you feel like, okay, we did something. Um especially as long as they still have Jaylen Brown, um why am I all of a sudden Joe Missoula and whatever else they end up doing with their routs. I don’t think they’re they’re done yet. They’re trying to still trade Simons. We’ll see what the team looks like. They still have Derrick White. Um, they’re not going to be just a putrid team, but they’re a good competition. They play the right way. The way they play will keep them competitive in a lot of games, and they have a really good coach. So, like, okay, you take out Boston, and I hope Philly’s healthy. If Philly is healthy, then you know that you went through a Jo Embiid. You know, you went through a Paul George, a Tyrese Maxi, a Jared McCain, uh, Quinn Grimes kind of like a really good team. I think that’s where the Pistons are at now at their point in their team building. They don’t want to just be given free lickings. They want to have some competition, play against these good teams, and see where they measure up. And especially for this to be happening like heading into December, like let’s say the Pistons are playing super well and they come out of this group going into December. You have two months ahead of the deadline, you feel good. You don’t have to you probably feel like you don’t have to make any moves. But if you let’s say they come out of this grouping and they struggle, let’s say they’re not able to take down Orlando at all. Let’s say they’re not able to hang with Boston. they’re not able to hang with Philadelphia if they’re healthy, which I again I am hoping everyone stays healthy. I’d like to see all these teams at full strength. Let’s say that happens and you’re struggling and you go into December, you’re at 500 or below 500 and you weren’t able to hang with these good teams. Probably is a reason for that obviously and you probably feel like you’re getting some answers heading into the deadline about where this team’s at. I think this is the perfect measuring stick for this team. I think they can come out of it. I I I do think they can come. I think their biggest competition will be Orlando. But if we are to believe if or maybe not believe if we are to have this hope that these young guys are going to take this step forward, if we’re going to have this hope that Assar does take the step forward, that Ivy takes a step forward, Aduran takes this step forward, K remains this franchise player and these vets that they brought brought in has have some good impact on the team, you should feel like they should be on the same level as the Orlando Magic. of all those things what people believe will happen if those happen you should be able to come out of this you’re not going against the Oklahoma City Thunder in this you’re not going against what I think would probably be a tougher matchup for the Pistons the Cleveland Cavaliers I don’t you’re not going against what the Houston Rockets in this in this grouping I think most people are going to say the Magic will be the favorite but the Pistons should feel like coming into this year we can hang with the Magic and if they do in this grouping I think that will give you a great idea of where this team’s at. So, I’m really happy with this grouping. I would have been really frustrated if they were in this group C1. I think this group C1, New York’s just going to wash everybody. Like, this group C1 is just like not good at all. I understand the East isn’t great. So, maybe it was hard to give three groupings like real competition. Um, like even actually group A is fine. I think group B has the most competition by far. Detroit, Boston, Orlando, and Philly if they’re healthy. By far the most competition. I’m happy the Pistons are in that one. So, let me know comment section down below or over on Twitter, Cuckahill. Are you guys happy with this grouping the Pistons are in? And do you think they can come out of this grouping at the end of November and represent group B, have a chance to move forward in the inseason tournament? Let me know comment section down below or over on Twitter. Coming up, Juran, we’re seeing him shoot a lot of threes in his practices and his training uh training sessions this offseason. Is that something you should expect to be a part of his game in the future? We’ll talk about it coming up. So, I want to thank you guys again. Make locked on Pistons your first list of every single day. We are free and available on all your podcast platforms. If you haven’t already, head to the YouTube channel at Locked OnPance. Hit that subscribe button or leave us a fivestar review on whatever podcast platform you’re listening to us on. That’s another great way to support the podcast. You know that we’re in the offseason. Like I this is the biggest indicator that we are indeed in the off seasonason and we’re looking for something to talk about and we’re looking for something to get hype about and we’re looking for something to believe in because we are now in the in the part of the offseason where we’re getting clips of players doing stuff that we’ve never seen them do before and we’re asking themselves ourselves can they actually do it? There’s been multiple clips that have come out from Jaylen Durren. I think it was on his Instagram or his trainers Instagram of him taking pull-up threes, catch and shoot threes, pull up midies. Seems like he’s really working on it and now everyone’s talking about it. Everyone’s asking, is Jaylen Dur going to be a shooter this year? Is he going to try to expand his game this year? Is that something we can expect for him to try to do? Will he expand to the mid-range? What, you know, is that is this something that’s going to be a part of his game? I have a positive and a negative takeaway or not negative takeaway. I I have a positive I don’t want to say a takeaway. A positive outlook and a negative outlook. Let’s let’s start with the negative outlook real quick. We see these type of videos every single offseason from every single player. We see clips from Mitchell Robinson hitting step back threes. We’ve seen I mean Pistons fans should be most used to it. Andre Drummond every single offseason had five, 10, 15 minutes worth of highlights of him shooting threes in the offseason and the one year he tried to become a three-point shooter, it went poor, really poorly. Um, so you’re going to see clips like these from all NBA players. You should not be getting too hype about these clips, okay? Like I don’t think people understand how good NBA players are when they’re not going against NBA players on NBA court. Like if Jaylen Duran or if any player on the Pistons came to a pickup session against the against any of us, they would look like Reggie Miller. They would look like Steph Curry compared to us. Like that’s that’s how good these NBA players are. So that’s the negative outlook. I I would say no. like do not all of a sudden start thinking Darren’s gonna start shooting threes. The positive outlook though is is there a chance he does. He does have a better chance of doing it than I’d say like an Andre Drummond. One Jaylen Duran’s form is a lot better than Drummond’s. Like let’s just compare him to Drummond because Drummond’s the one who had the videos every single offseason. People talked themselves into it. It never happened. That’s the one he’s going to get compared to. They were the same number. Whatever. Um Drummond’s form was not very good. Uh Jaylen Durren is pretty solid. His form is fine. He has good motion. Um the other thing though that I think is the most is is if you want to look for a reason to believe that this could happen, there is something that should give you some hope and that is if you look at his free throw percentage. His rookie year he was at 61%. That’s not good at all. Not good. His second season he jumped all the way to 79%. Now look, if a big man that shoots 79% from the free throw throw line, that’s a shooting indicator. That’s an indicator that they may be able to expand their range at least out to the mid-range area. Now, this past year, he fell back down to around 67%. But I mean, look, 60 games of shooting 79% from the free throw line is not nothing. That’s not nothing. And even 67% is better than his 61% his rookie year. Um, all I’m gonna say is is that that second season of shooting free throws combined with his forum does give me a little bit of okay, it maybe could happen. Maybe he’s able to add that to his game. At least a midi because again, his form is not bad. And he does have I mean, what did he shoot in the playoffs on the free throw line? I feel like he shot a lot better from the free throw line. Yeah, he shot 83% in the free throw from free throw line in the playoffs. Now, that was only a six game sample size, but even this past year, like I didn’t feel like he shot I mean, I guess it doesn’t matter what I feel like. This is the numbers. I didn’t feel like he shot 67% from the free throw line. I felt like I feel like Dur has good touch on his free throws, evident by the fact he shot nearly 80% his second year. So, I feel like that is a decent shooting indicator that he could do it. Am I getting hype over offseason videos like, “Oh my god, he’s about to start shooting threes this year.” No, I’m not because we get that from every We see Ben Simmons shooting threes every offseason. like we get it from every player. Um, but Duran was trying to take some pull-ups in summer league a few years ago and he was hitting them. Um, I’ve talked to some people that said he did showcase a little bit of a post fade away at times at Memphis. Um, and we had, again, we have the the evidence of him being a good free throw shooter for an entire season in the NBA. So, he’s he has a better chance of expanding his range a little bit than some of the other centers the Pistons have had over the years. But I wouldn’t be sitting here just booking it and thinking it’s going to happen. Um it it it’s it’s really hard. Like I don’t think people understand how hard it is to translate that to an NBA game with NBA closeouts with NBA fans screaming. It’s it’s a lot of it’s so much different. So I wouldn’t bet on it happening. But unlike Drummond, I would say it’s not impossible. I think it’s possible that Duran could at some point start shooting at least from mid-range and he’s extremely young. This is part of it having extremely young prospect. He’s only 21, so it’s like maybe it takes a few years, but what if it happens at 24? He’s not even in his prime yet. Like he’s been working on it for a long time. All even if he takes a few years with it, he’s not hitting his prime until what, 26? We’re like six years away from that. So, we’ll see what happens. I again I do think he has more indicators than any other big depists I’ve had over the years that have tried to do it. I just would pump the brakes on assuming it’s going to happen this year, but we’ll see. Do you guys think Jaylen Duran will be not a three-point shooter? I I won’t let’s not troll and act like he’s going to be a 40% three-point shooter, but maybe he’s shooting midies. Maybe he’s shooting like 10 to 15 feet away from the rim. Maybe he’s shooting floaters a little bit more. Do you guys think that’s something he could add to his game this upcoming season? Let me know. Comment section down below or on Twitter cougar.
