MLB LIVE🔴 St. Louis Cardinals vs Washington Nationals – Jul 10, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

just about set to go now. And on the hill, Steven Matz. How about a scouting report on him? Yeah, and as whip tells you, he’s been pretty effective this year on the mound. I mean, opposing hitters having a hard time getting on base and then being able to really distract him and do damage in terms of getting around the base path. So, taking the mound, this is a guy you want out there if you’re his teammate, and I expect him to be good in this one. CJ Abrams, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. In there for a strike at the bottom of the zone. Next offering is downstairs. Two balls, one strike. lined into right and there’s one away as we take a look at the Nationals lineup. Not a team that usually sees a lot of pitches or works a ton of walks, Chris. They take a more aggressive approach than some of the other teams in the league. They definitely have a few free swingers in this lineup. Hitchers who want to be on the attack and that’s great as long as you got pitches in the zone. But if the pitcher is able to expand the zone, can be very difficult for an offense like this to get going. You’ve got to somehow draw some walks, put some runners on base so that when you do have those free swingers come up, you can cash in with some runs that are plated. ripped on the ground to second. Gets it to first. Quick start here this evening. Two out. Top of the first. Batting third. Second base Luis Garcia. Two down. Base is empty. And now it’s Luis Garcia. swaying at a ball popped up. Wind makes the grab and that is that. Three up, three down for Washington. And now the Cardinals get their first shot at it here. No score. You’re dialed into the show back here at Bush Stadium. Our starter in this one, Jake Irvin. And Singi, it’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that can keep a good tempo and don’t give hitters time to adjust or think they can move through a ball game and you look off, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. Brendan Donovan, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. And another ball. and misses inside. And that’s through there for a strike. And the count is three and one. Clearly taking all the way there in that 3 0 count. It was a cookie right down the middle. Ripped to first. Caught batting. Now we take a check of the St. Louis Cardinals lineup. They do a lot of things well in this offense. Singi. They control the strike zone. They make pitchers work hard for outs. And as a result, one of the better OBP teams in the league. Well, what I love about it is it’s an organizational philosophy. Whether you go to instructional league, whether you go to spring training, you see these guys even during batting practice when it doesn’t matter. They’re practicing that type of approach, Boo. And when you have that filtering through the organization, even when you call off a player, he steps right in and continues with the pattern that they have established at this level, which ultimately leads to a lot of success. And it finds its way through for a hit. So, they get a man aboard with a one out single. You know, you translate on base percentage, it’s basically this. Teams that have a high on base percentage, they don’t make outs at a very high rate. As my buddy Joe Sheen says, OBP is life. One down. Next is the designated hitter, Alec Burlson in the dirt. And the righty deals. And there’s a foul ball. Wind leads off first with one away. That one backed up the middle and it gets through. Throw into third. Throw pulls him off the bag and he’s saved. Back to back base hits. Ting on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t square up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. Two on, one out. Here’s Contrarus. Now I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. There goes the runner. Swinging a miss. Throw to second. Ow. Kind of a gamble right there. They’re trying to stay out of the inning ending double play possibility. But now two outs and it’s gets a little tougher to drive in the run from third. That one fouled off and a foul ball. He stays alive. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Two outs. That misses the zone and a count one and two. Swing in a line drive. Base hit out of center field and for first it’s one zip. Comes through with the RBI. Other than ripping one into the gap or blasting one over the well, there aren’t a whole lot of hits that are more satisfying than a nice line drive into center field. So that definitely felt good. Runner at first with two away. Here’s Nolan Gorman in the dirt but kept close. misses outside. Now 2 and 0. And another ball. So now two on and two outs. Just came apart right there. Four pitch walk and guy at the plate was not going to help him out by swinging at something out of his own. First and second, two outs to Jay-Z getting ready to hit. That is upstairs for ball one. At this point the clean inning is over. Got to settle in, focus on the hitter, and get out of it with minimal damage. Drilled out towards left center field. Young sizing this one up and he makes the catch and that will end the inning. But the RBI single pushes across a run. It’s now one- nothing. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Top of the second. Here’s Nathaniel Low. The designated hitter Nathaniel. Mats back to work. That one at the knees for a strike. And it stays fair around first and hustling for second. And he’s there with a lead off double. A late jump. And I think that was the difference on the play. Boo. It’s not always easy seeing the ball off the bat. Something to improve. Runner in scoring position. No outs. And now the switch hitting first baseman Josh Bell. That’s in there. That’s strike one. Up the middle, dives and he can’t hang on. Safe at first as they can’t make the play. Batting six, third baseman Brady House. First and second, no outs. Brady House digging in for the Nationals. And that one fouled off. A swing and a miss as he chases way out of the zone. James Kingsley, our played umpire, consistent and maybe a little generous on the edges. Yeah, but give a little bit on the edges like you said, but from what I’ve seen, he usually does that when a pitcher is just commanding in those parts of the strike zone. And essentially, they’ve earned it. The umpire rolls with him. And a weak ground ball to the left side. And it’s just fouled. That was close. And the pitch is outside. Ball one. Low the lead runner at second. Bell out at first with nobody out. Swing and a pop off in foul ground. Pulls it in. One away. Got the pitch that he wanted. Just a little bit quick. Front shoulder open. Backside collapsed a little bit and the launch angle not where he needed it to be. And stepping in is the speedy Dalen Lyall. Hit on the ground. Might be two. There’s one. And that’s two. They made it look easy, but it started with a nice feed to the second base from the shortstop. Perfect turn. And they’re out of this jam. Bottom of the second now for St. Louis. Lars Newbar delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. the count. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. The O2 the right side. The flip to the pitcher covering and a quick out number one. Batting eight catcher Pedro. Here’s the catcher to hit. Pedro Pah. First pitch misses. One out. Base is empty. That one finds a corner. One ball, one strike. The 1-1 is fouled off. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Two outs. Base is empty. Digging in. The speedy outfielder Victor Scott in there for a strike at the top of the zone. Two out. Space is empty. Next offering is in for a strike. looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the three. Oh, that’s a strike out. And that’ll do it for the inning. One, two, three go to Cardinals, but they lead it one to nothing. Back here in St. Louis onto the third inning. Here’s the catcher, Riley Adams. Adams measures 6’4 in 28 years old and he was a third round pick back in 2017. Just missed. Yeah, a big swing and a miss. One ball, one strike. Oh, that’s inside. Fouls one off. Two and two up the middle and it’s through for a hit. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. Batty night. Now here is Jacob. Y just missed. flips the corner and it’s a ball to strike. I got one ball, one strike. That’s a hit. Runner holds it second, but they’ve got something going on here. Back to back singles. You’ll often hear the phrase short to it, long through it. And that’s a great example of it right there. Got the barrel in the hitting zone early, squared it up with the welltimed swing and came away with a beautiful line drive into center field. Here’s CJ Abrams to hit. He’s 0 for one. And that’s outside and that is ball one. First and second, no outs. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. That’s just a little bit low. And that is in for a strike. And it’s two and one now. And that skips in the dirt. James Wood in the OD circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. And they’re all loaded up. Oh, that sets up a really big at bat in this game. These are the moments when everyone in the stadium gets really locked in. So, bases all loaded up. James Wood digging in for the Nationals. Golden opportunity right here. Rolled softly, but that goes foul. The opportunity for a huge inning exists right here. Bases loaded, nobody out. But as a hitter, can’t be over anxious. That pitcher is up against the wall. Make him come to you. Adams, the runner at third. Young at second. Abrams at first with no outs. Gets a piece and stays alive. got him looking and he did not like the call. Big strike out right there and maybe a little controversial with the call. I think he got a little bit of favor on the mound. No question about it. It’s not exactly what you want to see in a big spot like that. And I’m sure there’s some chirping going on from the dugout making it clear that wasn’t his best call behind the play today. And now Luis Garcia and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Next offering misses down and away. He’s looking for a ground ball to get a double play and out of this jam. And that’s off the outside edge. Two and one. Boo. In situations like these, the air can get really thin up there at the plate. Got to find a way to breathe and slow everything down. One out. Base is full. On the ground is second. Might be two. There’s one throw to first, but he beat it. Next for I promise you they’re guys that get a little bit faster when they can smell an RBI. That was a possible inning ending double play. Great hustle and he gets rewarded with the RBI because of it. Nathaniel Low up to hit one for one with a single so far. That one outside and it’s one and0 and another ball. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. That’s off the inside corner and that’s ball three. Get ready for some action here. Good RBI guy at the plate. Runners in scoring position and the hitters count. And that’s in there at the knees. Tied up here in the early going. Tap foul at the plate. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. Swing and a ground ball out to short. Sneaks through base head. Growley gets it done in a big spot to get the run across. I don’t know how he’s able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it. That pitch was inside and he had it get really deep. So pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it. Josh Bell at the plate now. Swing and a tapper that rolls foul. Two on, two outs. And that’s outside. on the ground right side and foul ball. First and second, two down. Foul ball still a one and two count. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Fouls it off. Still one and two and a swing and a miss. Good job at damage control right there. But two runs for him and they jump ahead. We head now to the home half of inning number three. It’s the Nationals two and the Cardinals one. And welcome back to the ballpark. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. Here’s the left fielder, Brendan Donovan. Donovan. And that chops in for a strike. Well, the offense has gotten going and a pitcher wants to go out there, have a real quick inning, get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay hot. on the ground right side and it goes just foul. It feels like we might be headed towards a rain delay if the weather doesn’t ease up. Chris, yeah, the umpire and crew are going to pay attention to how the weather is impacting this game. And the moment it becomes dangerous, I think is the moment we’ll be forced to take a break. Next pitch is outside. really good take especially with two strikes and that is downstairs and it’s a full count. That one misses. So a lead off walk. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I’ll tell you what, he earned that ball. And the batter now, Mason Win singled and scored his first time. That one misses. That’s five straight. Way to lay off that push down. That’s smacked down a line to center. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s one down. Now batting the designated hitter, Alec Burles. And now Alec Burlson. A single his first time. Let’s go. counts one and in the dirt right through there for a strike. Tying run is at first here in the last half of the third. Ground ball left side and that’s just fouled. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. Here’s a one-two foul ball left side. He’ll see another man at first. One away. Ed swinging at a line drive into right field. Lyle makes the grab and there’s two gone. Up next for the Cardinals, first baseman Wilson. Here comes Wilson Contrus. Singled and drove in a run his first time through. He’s been known to jump all over the first pitch. So that seems like a missed opportunity right there. You one. And that’s a little bit high. And that’s a pitch early in this game. He needs called for a strike. Struggling with command issues. He’s got to get a little help from the umpire. And one and two. Donovan off of first with two away. Pitch misses. The countdown two and two. swing and a chopper out to short. Fires over to first and Contrarus is retired. And that is the third out of the inning. The Cards leave one and they trail it here two to one. Welcome back. And now on the mound to start the fourth, Sunny Gray. And he’s been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year. Typically at least one an inning, so he’ll be tough to get to. Sunny Gray at the plate. Brady House 0 for one with a fly out. Third baseman Brady House. First pitch and he just misses. Action in the St. Louis bullpen. Andre Palante, the young right-hander up and throwing out front. Rip foul. The one-1 is fouled off. down to the dirt, swing, and a miss. Gets to it onto first. Got him. One away on the strike out. Up now for Washington. Don Lyle. He hit into a double play his first time up. And that one misses up and in. And that’s ball one. That one the other way. And that’s a base hit. So a man aboard now with one away. Now batting catcher Riley Adams. Digging in. Riley Adams. One for one with a single and a run scored so far. Right through there for a strike. Sunny Gray checks on the runner and he’s back safely. Yes. Runner on the goal in the air right side of the infield. Contrarus has this one sized up. He’s there. He’s got it. And there’s two away. Now batting the center fielder, Jacob Young. And now up for Washington, Jacob Young. And he’s already singled in this game. Go. Come on. It really feels like we might be running out of time before a rain delay is called. This rain is not letting up. Yeah. And if we do get a delay, the unfortunate thing is the clock’s going to start ticking on these pitchers and they won’t be able to keep their arms warm forever if it’s a long break and going to have to exit this game a little early. Go home, M. Next offering is in for a strike. popped up foul territory behind the plate and that’s the third out. Nationals leave one. They lead it 2-1. Back here in St. Louis, ready to go. Bottom four. Here’s the third baseman, Nolan Gorman. Gorman. Yeah, the first offering a fast ball for a strike. Pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. right field. That’s back there. That one way back and it’s gone. And it ties it up. It’s 22. He just sent this stadium into a frenzy. They’re going nuts. Just an excellent swing all the way around. And it had that down coming off the bat that gets everyone’s attention. Got a pitch to drive short to the baseball. Squared it up and the bat spin carried it out of here. So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. Thomas Sajay-Z next up for the Cardinals. And the first pitch misses for ball one. You know, these Cardinals doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. They’re doing a good job of working the pitch count and they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well. That one down the line and foul ball. Still relatively early, but with a pair of runs already on the board, the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set him up to do more damage later in this game. Wood on his way over. He makes the grab and there’s one away. Now batting right fielder L Lars Newbar next up for the Cardinals. He’s 0 for one and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Was good pitch there. really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. And that’s got extra bases written all over it. And he’s got a double. He was all over that one. Put a really nice balanced swing on it. And when you can rope one into the gap like that, you’re thinking extra bases from the first couple of steps out of the box. And he’ll feel real good about that one. So the go-ahead run in scoring position, Pedro Pah. Next up for the Cardinals. That one finds the zone. It’s 0 and one. Nuke Bar the runner at second with one away. Swinging a chopper. Garcia tosses to first. Now two away. Now batting center fielder Victor Scott. Now it’s going to be Victor Scott. His first at bat was a strikeout. Just missed. You don’t want to get beat by a fast ball in. And he spits on that one. Next offered in there for a strike and it’s one and one. Back-to-back fast balls in. That last one called for a strike. Probably go away, but look for him to come back in there to try to finish you off. That one almost got him. Out there on the mound. He’s got to go right after this hitter because you don’t want to turn this lineup over. This is the guy that you’ve got to get that final out, get out of this inning. Cia strikes him out for the second time today. A lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. New inning getting started. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. CJ Abrams Gray back to work. Fast ball in for a strike. 0 and one. You know, these Nationals as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But I think they have to out to short on to first. One away here in the fifth. I believe we talked about how the ball is coming out of a pitcher’s hand. the way it comes out of his hand as an infielder. Wow. Really impressive. Now the number two hitter, James Wood for two in this one. Check swing and he went strike one. Oh, one’s the count. Nice curve ball for a strike. He’s trying to stay away from this lefty knowing that a lot of left-handers like the ball down and in. One down. Base is empty. Off the mark there. Going to count one and two. good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. Next offering is outside. All tied up and we’re in the top of the fifth. Swing and a miss struck him out. Two down. Bergie just ran out of patience there. It took a couple of pitches to even that count off with two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. Luis Garcia will hit next. Just missed. swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit and that keeps the inning alive. Now batting the designated hitter, Nathaniel Low. Nathaniel Low digging in for the Nationals. And first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Two outs and that one fouled off. cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. So, one hit is all they get. Last half of the fifth. Coming up, we are tied 2-2. We head to the bottom of the fifth now. The left fielder, Brendan Donovan. Brendan Donovan. Come on. That one finds the zone. Strike one. You know, these cards just haven’t produced as many competitive at bats as I’d like to see in this one. They really haven’t worked many deep counts or longer bats. And that’s fine if you’re having a lot of success, but at this point, I think it’s time to make an adjustment. Pitch was in and off the plate. So hard to do anything with the pitch in that location, but somehow he got the barrel to it and hit it well. Pretty amazing. Mason Win next up for the Cardinals. Singled and scored back in the first. He’s one for two. That just misses. Ball one. Just missed. Fought off. Foul. And that is out of play with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. He’s got it. And there’s one down. Now batting designated hitter Alec Burlson. And next is the designated hitter Alec Burlson. One for two. In the air left side. Wood sizes this one up and there’s two down. Excellent play out there and he does it in a huge spot. That wall it can very easily jar the ball loose when you bang into it. So that could have been a really different outcome. Wilson Contrarus now up to the plate. Called strike right there. Swings through that one for strike two. Oh, that’s that serve right there. He threw it extremely well. And talk about just a ton of break. So tough to get that barrel to. And the next pitch is way outside. gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Really great change of speeds. He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. That’s inside. Two gone, but the go-ahead run is at first. Last half of inning number five. That one hit to right. Lyall squeezes it and that is the inning. No runs, one hit, no errors, and a man left. We’re through five. We are tied 2-2. And we’re back. Start of the six. John Shami with Chris Singleton. And leading off, Josh Bell. And there’s a strike on the outside corner. Activity in the bullpen. Jojo Romero, the left-hander, is getting that big fast ball of his ready to go. Mod the right-hander loosening up as well. And that one upstairs. Ball one. outside low and it’s two and one and there’s a ball. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. Foul ball and it remains a full cow. Strikes him out. Went with the sweeper and it worked. Brady House now at the plate. Brady House. That one finds the corner and it’s 0 and one. Man, I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. Swing and a miss. and two bs another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty simple in terms of hooking away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. And now the right fielder Dalen Lyall. And a strike in there. Lyall 22 years old and he was a second round pick in 2021. Two down to there’s a line drive to left field and base hit. That’s backto-back singles for him. Put a pretty good jolt into that one. Great swing, nice balance and weight transfer, and he got it to drop in out there in the deep part of the field. And now, let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. Now, Riley Adams fouled off down the right side. St. Louis the kick and the pitch. Runner goes ball outside. Safe at second with a stolen base. Chris, his wheels were the difference maker on that play. Just got in there. Yeah, with Statcast’s help, we see his top speed on this stolen base. And that’s a big number. I mean, man, he really made his athleticism work for him on that one. A little out front there as he swings through. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. battling here as he fouls it away with the go-ahead run. Standing at second and we’re in the top half of the six. Blows the high heat past them. That’s a strike out. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. Back now for the bottom of the sixth. And there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Mitchell Parker. Left-handed batter at the plate. And he’s been excellent in those matchups this year. So, this seems like a calculated move. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Nolan Gorman. He’s already homerred here in this one. You know, this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher. And what you tell yourself is I want to stay square to the plate. Try to hit the ball over the shortstop’s head. And a base hit. And a good start to the inning. Oh, no waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. Just a really nice approach to shoot that line drive to the opposite field. There’s a lot of hard work and discipline that goes into getting a result like that at the plate. Doesn’t come naturally for most hitters. Here’s the second baseman, Thomas Sajay. And the first pitch misses for ball one with a go ahead run at first here in the bottom of the six. Ouch. That one’s broen save. How about that rightielder? And now the hustle out to check on him. That was quite a shot he took as you see him down on the knee. Yeah, clearly in some real pain, but he will not want to come out of this game if he doesn’t have to. It’s looking to me like he’s going to try to shake it off and continue. First and second, no outs. Lars Newbar digs in now and no one can get there and they’re having to play station to station right here. Base is loaded. Nobody out. That’s three singles in a row. Nice job going the opposite way with it. Letting the ball travel and not allowing the barrel to hook around the ball. It’s so frustrating when you see a good pitch and your hands roll over. It was on the outside part of the plate and he approached it perfectly. Bases loaded. Nobody out. Pah getting ready to hit. That one missed. Base is loaded. Nobody out. Highfly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. Ball to strike. The pitch comes up empty. That’s strike two. Sometimes being lucky is a swing and miss. If he makes contact with that pitch, probably hits into a double play. The one two up the middle, makes the catch. One down. Up next for the Cardinals, center fielder Victor Scott. Up next for St. Louis, Victor Scott who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts at the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning ending double play boo and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. This guy absolutely flies. The defense wants to turn two, but they’ve got to get a ball they can do it with. Make sure you get the first out before you try to rush and get two and end up with nothing. And that gets the top of the zone for a strike and a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. Certainly a strikeout situation right there. The infield playing back and this pitcher has to step up and get the swing and miss. Really nice job of attacking the hitter at the plate. Pretty good two out at bat coming up now. So, two down now and here is Brendan Donovan. First pitch just misses. Two outs. Bases are full. And there’s a ball. Pressure’s on right here. Two count. Base is loaded. You don’t want to fall to a three ball count and then walk in or on. He’s got to challenge the hitter right here. In the air, left field down the line. Base hit. One run is in. The second run scores for two now. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch run scoring it back. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. So, up next, Mason Win one for three. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. just missed. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Jose A. Ferrer looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez. Number 61 warming up as well. And a swing and a miss there. So far, all we’ve seen in this at bat are fast balls. Look for him to slow it down right here ahead in the count. Two aboard, two outs. Nope. Outside. The next pitch misses. Counts full. Three and two. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked on the ground to third. House throws to first in time and that’ll keep more runs from coming in. Inning over. So, it’s two runs on four hits, no errors, and a couple left on. We’re through six full. It’s the Cardinals 4 and the Nationals 2. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound. Jojo Romero. Well, he’s been a bit of a wild card out there in terms of throwing strikes. He’s definitely struggled with free passes this year. Up now for Washington, Jacob Young. This guy can absolutely fly. I think one of the faster players in baseball. That’s outside. Ball one. Slice to right and that gets down for a base hit. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep, put the barrel right to it, and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. So back to the top of the order, and the batter will be the shortstop, CJ Abrams. Swinging a foul out of play. Now, this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. The tying run at the plate. Swing and a miss as he chases that one darting out of the zone. This guy’s sink has so much drop. It’s almost like a split finger fast ball instead of just weak contact. Got him and one out now. So digging in, James Wood 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. Outside loan, one and0 that’s to third. Gorman now a jump throw to first and he beats it. Everyone’s safe. Always feels amazing getting a job done when the team needs you to come through. It’s just bigger than your own individual stats. Now a huge at bat in this game coming up. Next to hit for the Nats, Luis Garcia. There’s the strike. All one’s the count. Yeah, that’s fouled off with the go ahead run at the plate here in the top half of inning number seven. swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow left field. It’s going to fall for a hit. Run comes in from second and it’s an RBI single and they trail by one. Well, he wasn’t afraid to hit with two strikes. I think he choked up a little bit, maybe spread out, but he got the job done right there. First and second, one out. Nathaniel Low will hit next. Struck out on just three pitches last time. Not even close there. And that is ball one. And that’s downed away. He’s getting a little frustrated out there on the mound getting hit around a little bit. Let’s see if he can settle himself down. That’s off the mark. And now 3 and 0. At this point in the game, you cannot issue free passes. He’s going to have to challenge this hitter. Hitter’s got to be ready to swing it. Josh Bell in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. And there’s the automatic. Really been able to slow down the game tonight with his at bats. And the biggest one he’s had so far. He doesn’t look anxious at all. And that drops in for a strike. It’s a hitter. You don’t know what to expect here in the 3-2. If he’ll throw a breaking ball 3-1, he’ll do it again. 3-2 in the air to left center. Makes the grab for the second out. Well, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. and you feel like a wide receiver playing football. Here comes a manager out of the Cardinals dugout and he’ll make a move to the pad. Jojo Romero won’t go any further tonight and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. New pitcher on here, Phil M. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect the tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Here’s Josh Bell. This is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation. Yeah, Boo. Not sure what the numbers say, but clearly an at bat that could change the course of this game dramatically. That one finds the zone and that is strike one. Late swing fouled to the left. So the tying run at second. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. Foul ball still 0 and2 that one inside. Look out. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. Almost got him. Straighten him up a little bit. Helpful in the dirt to second, but way too late. Safe there. And two in scoring position now thanks to that wild pitch. Could be a costly one there. The tying run was already in scoring position, but now that go-ahead run is just a base hit away from scoring. Got to let it go and make some big pitches now. So now three and two and that’ll load the bases. That’s a tough one to swallow right there. If you’re on the mound, you’re ahead in the count 02 and you just couldn’t find a way to put him away. That’s going to be frustrating if that one comes back to bite him. Headed towards the corner. And that’s a fair ball. It’s offline and he scores. It’s six to four. A costly mistake in the outfield thanks to the bad read and terrible timing for that to happen. That’s a play you just want to forget about. So up next, Dalon Lyle right through there for a strike. misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. Two balls, one strike. That one fouled off. Two and two. House at second with two down. Ground ball right side to Jay-Z. And they’re happy to just get off the field after that break. But four score in the inning. Three of them on this bases clearing double. It’s a two-run lead now at 64. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Andrew Chaffen on for his 20th appearance of the year. Leading off, Alec Burlson. Andrew Chaffen. Check swing called strike. This is a very important inning here. After scoring all those runs, you want your pitcher to come out and just mow them down. The offense has worked hard. It’s shut down in any time. Pitch misses there and the count is one and one. Just missed. You got two balls, one strike. And that’s in for a strike. Just a really nice slider down and in there. He wants to get the hitter thinking fast ball, speed him up, and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement. This one in the air. Garcia has a beat on it. Makes the grab. One away. Up next for the Cardinals. First baseman Wilson. And up to hit is Wilson Contrarus. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. And a foul ball. The Nets up by two here. the bottom of the seventh. Misses outside and it’s two and one. Fouled off left side. Here we go. Ripped on a line. Ly pulls that one down. That’s out number two. Man, that’s one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it’s about the process. He did everything right right there. Nothing to show for it, but in your mind, you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat. Get another one. Gorman in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike and downstairs. Next pitch is downstairs. Louis swanging a ball lifted in the air right field. He just missed it. And that’s the inning. Now pitching. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Andre Palante. He has a great slider with tons of movement. Palante. Now the catcher up to hit. Riley Adams. Riley Adams. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. I think you’re sitting off speed there. Got him looking. Called strike three and a fast up in the zone. Well, that’s not the best two strike fast I’ve seen, but certainly got away with the location there. You know, sometimes as a hitter when you’re down in the count, you’re so focused on a pitcher painting the black and you just get a little bit locked up on something down the heart of the plate, not expecting it and it just kind of freezes you. Swing and blast one down the line. It’s gone if it’s fair, but it hooks foul. Well, that’s where you want to be right there. All over that first pitch fast ball. Just a little too much hook on it. Straighten that thing out. It’s a jogger on the bases. moved into the bullpen for the Cardinals. Kyle Ley appears to be getting loose. King a left-hander also throwing. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Now, a little bit of a questionable call on that fast ball right there. It appeared to miss off the outside just a little bit according to the electronic strike zone, but that’s the type of location where you kind of have to understand that it’s close enough to where you don’t want to put the fate of your bat in the hands of the umpire. He did and he got burned. Here’s CJ Abrams now. Absolut tries to check his swing. Now a look to third and he held back according to Larry Bullard. the 10. The shorts stop takes the ball. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the eighth. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. Just missed. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So, it’s a good take by him. line drive, base hit, and that keeps the inning going. Hitting is really easy for some guys. One thing that I can see already, his bat stays in the zone on plane for an extended period of time. And guys like that, they have a high contact rate and they have more barrels because of that bat being on plane. And even when you don’t get it great, it’s still hit hard enough to dunk something in like that in front of the center fielder. Abrams leads off first with two down to the inning. Check on the runner and he’s back in easily. Hammer down the right side but foul. just off the inside edge. Popped up to the left into foul ground. Gorman makes the catch and that’ll do it. So, one left for Washington. They’re up 6-4. back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Cole Henry coming on to face a righty here. And he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. Now up for St. Louis, Thomas Sajay. Second baseman Thomas Jay-Z. He swings and misses at the first pitch. 0 and one action in the pen down there. Kyle Finnean looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez. And now the one. And there’s a foul ball. That one not close and the count is one and two. This to center field. That one gets down for a hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. Still able to come through behind in the count right there. These days, most outfielders play pretty deep. And I’m not sure if that was a factor there or not, but off the bat, you’re thinking it’s going to be a pop out. And it just kind of nestled into that spot where no one was able to get to it. Lars Newbar now at the plate. First pitch and he just misses. with the tying run at the plate here. The bottom half of the eighth inning and that misses and that’s ball two. Throw to first and he’s back in on a dive. I think you want to get a one-way lead, be very aggressive in the secondary. This hitter, not a power guy, so you want to make sure that you can get some length on the secondary lead and perhaps score a ball in the gap. Pedro Pah in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. runner at first with no outs here. And the tying run is on base. Not the start to this inning he was hoping for on the mound. Now he’s going to have to really dial it up against the bottom part of this lineup to get out of this jam. Looks like we’ve got a substitution at second. Cardinals going with a pinch runner. Garrett Hampton. Pedro Pah the next to hit. 0 for three in this one. This is again five in a row. Well, this is a critical spot for both the pitcher and the hitter. You can learn a lot about a guy by how he handles these pressure situations. Rolled to short. Could be two. slings it across and that is a big first out. That right there was a productive at bat. You know you’re doing something right anytime you help move two runners into scoring position and give your team a chance to drive in a couple of runs. Here’s the center fielder, Victor Scott. Three strikeouts already. He’s 0 for three. And there’s no doubt that they’ll feed off the energy from this crowd, right? I mean, yeah, I’d say the intensity level has gone up a few notches for sure. Ball one there in the infield at the corners. Don’t be surprised to see them come home first and prevent that run from scoring this to third. Zips it across and there are two outs. Well, there’s a lot writing on that at bat right there. Nice job of the pitcher to bear down, make the pitch, get the ground ball. Excellent piece of work. And here’s the St. Louis leadoff man, Brendan Donovan. A chance for more damage right here. Couple of RBI’s for him in his last AB. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And that’s ball one. So the tying run at second just missed. Next offering is in for a strike. Two, two outs, two in scoring position. swing and a miss. Two and two now. Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going out there and doing damage with it. Fires across the diamond. That’s a third out. So, the Cards strand a couple. They trail it here. Six to four. Now pitching. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, John King. And they felt it was time to bring on a left-handed reliever from the pin with the lefty hitter coming up. I think it’s a good move. I know. I never liked when opposing teams did that to me. So digging in, Luis Garcia. Though he came up clutch earlier in this ball game and really just needs to take the same approach. Think hard right back up the middle. He swings and fouls one off. King measures 6’2 in. He features a sinker, a change up, and he works in a slider. And that one a little below the knees. And now it’s even one and one. Next offering is fouled back. in the dirt and the count is two and two. Line drive and it stays fair. Now he’ll turn for second and he greetss the new arm from the bullpen with a double. Having himself a really nice game at the plate. He got a pitch he could drive but he didn’t get too excited like a lot of guys do and pull off the baseball. Really good timing all the way through the swing and the barrel was so on plane with the ball. Easy drive into the gap for that double. Now here is Nathaniel Low the other way and foul ball. Garcia leads off second with nobody out. That’s off the mark and it’s one and one action in the St. Louis bullpen. Kyle Ley getting loose out there. And he hits a ground ball right side and it goes just foul man at second. Stays alive. That was the emergency hack right there. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. runner in scoring position. Nobody out here in the top of the ninth on the ground right side and foul ball. That is a really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. Swinging a ground ball up the middle. Tosses to first. Now one gone in the ninth. That’s what a good sinker is designed to do. Get a guy to roll over a little bit. Hit the ball on the ground. Kill some worms while you’re at it. Next is switch hitting first baseman Josh Bell. This is all about situational hitting. It’s crucial in this spot. Do whatever it takes to put the ball in play and hopefully you find a gap in the defense. That one catches the corner for a strike. Here’s a sackfly situation and he’s got to make sure he gets the ball out over the plate and get those arms extended. They’re trying to crowd him with the infield in. This be a big pick off if he can push a run across. Cuts on it and misses. That’s a strike out. Pulled the string of the change up. Big strike out right there. And that kind of takes the pressure off the defense a bit. Infield was in. So now they can move back. give themselves more time on a grounder to make a play. A lot more ways to work out of this and strain that runner at third. Now house in the box now. No balls in a strike and a foul ball. Two outs. Liner and this could be trouble. Runner from third comes across and they take a threerun lead. He’s in with a double and that’s his second double of the night. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. And now up for Washington, Dalon Lyle. just missed. Swinging a drive deep right field and that is a foul ball. Two outs and one in scoring position. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. They limit the damage here. One for the Nationals on this RBI double. It’s now 74. Back now and on the mound the closer Kyle Finnegan. He pitched yesterday and we’ll see him once again. Number 67 Kyle Finnegan. Now it’s the short stop win. The shorts stop. Mason win. Just missed. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. There’s the strike. Wow. No fair right there. I mean, that slider didn’t move to the very last moment. Incredibly difficult to pick that up. Just kind of have to tip your cap on that pitch. And a swing and a miss. From a pitcher’s perspective, that’s a beautiful splitter right there. As a hitter, you don’t like it. But he’s commanded his fast ball and out of that same tunnel, that splitter comes and the bottom just falls out of it. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Wood makes the grab and there’s one down. Now batting designated hitter. He’s two outs away. And now the DH Alec Burlson. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Finnegan. He’s made a name for himself as a very effective reliever, but not really what you expect from a bullpen arm these days because he’s not out there racking up Ks and the one swing and a miss. I think it’s the deception in his ability to change arm angles and slots and give hitters different looks within one at bat. They’re never able to get comfortable. When you only see him once, a lot of times he has success. Little bit low now. Two balls in a strike. Got to be clever, too, when you don’t have that lights out stuff, right? Absolutely. And you got to know what you’re able to do. Instead of focusing on what that hitter strength is, stay with your strength and trust that you’ll come out on top. And there’s two away. Up next for the Cardinals, first baseman, Wilson. One out left for the Cardinals. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Wilson Contras. That’s inside and it’s one and0. Swings through that one for strike one. One ball, one strike. Hit to right and that should do it. And that’ll do it. Well, Boo, four games wasn’t too long of a losing streak, but they’re definitely happy to be back in the win column. Now you can turn things around, get on the right track, and probably start a winning streak from here. This one finishes with a final of seven to four. For Chris Singleton and our entire crew, I’m John Shi saying so long.
