Hitting sixth at first base, Spencer Steer. Jose Travinho will catch and bat seventh. Hitting eight, the right fielder, Will Benson, and Noelby Marte is at third base batting ninth. On the mound for the Reds today, left-hander Nick Lollo. Once more it’s Fredel Mlan Dea Cruz A’s Lux Steer Trevinho Benson and Marte with Lidolo pitching the umpires today at home plate Jeremy Rehack Chris Conroy is the crew chief he’s at first John Tempain’s second Brennan Miller is the third base umpire pleased as always to be joined by the cowboy Jeff Brantley I’m Tommy Thraws great to be with you here at Great American Ballpark this evening and Cowboy Red’s going for back-to back victories and I I got to believe if Nick Ledo throws the ball today against the Marlins the way he did against the Phillies his last time out. He’s going to be in pretty good shape and so too are the Reds. Yeah, I think his execution has gotten more crisp. I think he’s he’s able to really follow pitches on the outside corner, both fast ball, curve ball, and change up. And he’s starting to get some more called strikes on the inside corner. You and I have talked about this ad nauseium that he doesn’t really get the call on the inside corner to right-handers simply because of the awkward angle by which he brings the ball to the plate and a lot of umpires just see it as a ball even though it appears that the pitch is on the plate every time. How big of a weapon is that change up become for Lola? I I think it’s I think it’s an outstanding weapon. I think he’s got great arm speed with it. That’s the key to a change up anyway. He’s got some nice movement away from the right-hander, but probably the biggest issue is that he can throw it for a strike relatively in a consistent manner. The the crazy part for Nick is trying to figure out how to get over the top of that change up and still be able to get around the breaking ball to bring it back to the plate because it’s two different arm angles and two well, same arm angle, different wrist angle when you cut loose the baseball. It’s the Reds and Marlins. Hope you enjoy it here at Great American Ballpark this evening. Let’s play first pitch presented by Cincinnati Children’s. Changing the outcome together. The Doolos into his windup and he brings it home. First pitch is a fast ball that misses high outside four ball one. Temperature 87ยฐ 87ยฐ is our Tempar game time temperature today. Get complete home comfort with the Timstar heating and cooling system. Find your local Temptar dealer at tempstar.com. Here’s Lenolo’s 10 pitch. Swing and a miss and the count is even. One ball, one strike on Edwards. Definitely not a day that you’ll have any problem getting loose. Those first two pitches at 95 m an hour. One ball, one strike on Edwards. Here comes the 1-1 pitch. He swings and pops it in the air. Short right field. Out goes Mlan. In comes Benson. It’s Benson. He’s got it. There’s one down. And just a little bit of cloud cover is actually probably a welcome relief for the two guys that are going to be playing left field today. Gavin Lux for the Reds and for the Marlins, Arabito Hernandez, because when the sun is shining bright, left field is a nightmare this time of day. Same is really true for the centerfielders as well. Yeah, especially as it begins to set. Now Augustine Ramirez. Here’s the pitch to Ramirez. It’s a back door breaking ball for a called strike. to count as nothing one. That sun will probably be in and out of clouds throughout the ball game this evening. Nothing and one on Ramirez. Dangerous hitter. Reds have found that out the hard way. The pitch is up too high. Five games against Cincinnati and he is 10 for 18 against the Reds in his very young major league career. Pitch around the zone, not in the zone. Here’s the 1-1. a strike on the inside half the plate to the fast actually had Ramirez backing out of the way. Yeah, that pitch to a right-handed hitter looks like it’s going to hit him in the back knee and you can see it’s an awkward pitch to follow coming to the plate now. The pitch and it is a little bit up and away. Two balls and two strikes on Ramirez on the year hitting 249 with 14 home runs and 40 driven in. Dolo makes his 19th start of the year. Home with a two-2 pitch. On that’s fouled straight back. Still two balls and two strikes on Ramirez. Dolo five and six on the year trying to even his record. 3.58 earn run average. He has struck out 93 against 22 walks holding opponents to a 242 average. Enders today just over 100 innings pitched on the year. Here’s the 2-2. swung on, popped up into the air, shallow right toward the line. Long run Benson. Steer is out. It’ll actually be Steer in foul territory down by the tarp to make the catch just outside the right field line for the second out. Now Spencer Steer made that look about as easy as you could make it look. That is not an easy play. There’s a lot of first baseman that that ball bounces on the track and then into the seats. And he went right to it. A lot of times you’ll see a first baseman track it. They’re going back and forth, stumbling a little bit. He was in control the entire time he was tracking. First pitch to Otto Lopez is breaking ball that hangs just a little bit outside. And the count is one and0 on Lopez. Harland shorts stop hitting 249. Nine homers, 44 batted in. And here’s the one pick over the inside corner. The breaking ball for a called strike. The count is one and one. Now, boys, is it me or does it feel like Looo is having a little more success landing the breaking ball on the inside part of the plate when he wants to one pitch fast up and in, and now it’s a two ball, one strike count. I think he has I I think he’s able to land it on the outside corner with more regularity than he has been in years past. with that breaking ball in because he’s been able to land the back door breaking ball. I think he’s got a better feel for where the inside corner is rather than just trying to bury it on the back foot. Two balls, one strike to count on Lopez. Bases are empty with two men out. Ready at the belt into his wind up and he throws swinging a soft tap foul over by the Harlins on deck circle. Still two balls and two strikes on Otto Lopez. Western and Southern Financial Group wants to strike out cancer. Every time Red’s pitcher strikes out a batter, Western and Southern makes a donation to support cancer research in the greater Cincinnati area. Comes fighting cancer. We’re all in this together. Two balls, two strikes on Lopez and Lenolo’s 2-2. Back door breaking ball hangs too far outside this time. Full count, three balls and two strikes. Got Edwards to fly out to right field. Augustine Ramirez popping out in foul territory down the right field line. Now Looo having some sort of an issue and like a blister issue on his index finger. Maybe maybe it was just a bit of a callous. Asked for time and kind of looking and picking at something on his finger there. Then went to the Rosenbag. Empire wanted to check on him. Says he’s fine. Here’s the payoff pitch to Lopez. Swung on. Popped up. Foul into the seats behind. Will count. Three and two and holding here on Otto Lopez. He’s still looking at that finger. Surprised the Reds have not gone out to check on him. You can see Derek Johnson and Terry Francona talking about it. That is that was the issue for Nick Ledo last year about this time of the year. Two pitch foul down the right field line. Is that something where the weather starts to heat up and you get more humidity? Humidity and that skin begins to loosen a little bit. I think there’s a there’s something that Nick puts on his finger that’s been approved by Major League Baseball to keep that pad dry and to keep it where it’s not so susceptible to tearing on the scene. 3-2 pitch is skyed way up into shallow left field. Backpedaling the shortstop. De La Cruz is there. He’s got it and the inning is over. That’ll do it for the Marlins here in the first inning. We go to the bottom of inning number one. It’s the Marlins nothing. Great moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. Disorder. He’s one of the big hits. All the great rats. You got to be kidding me. and all the swagger. Scott Slow tomorrow morning at 9:00 on 700 WLW. K. Fredel standing in against the right-hander Calantrol, former Cleveland Guardian, brings it home. First pitch is in there for strike called over the outside corner to TJ Fredel. The count is nothing and one. Of course, the last time the Reds saw him, he was in Rocky’s Central sign of the offseason with Marlins. The 01 pitch to Fredel swings and pops it up into the air. Foul third base side. Over to have a look is Norby, but that’ll end up well back into the seat and out of play. Nothing at two. Control is not overpowering. Just trying to stay out of the middle of the plate. Had a really tough time to begin the season. smooth things out in in the month of May and June was kind of up and down. Here’s the O2 to Freedel. Check swing off the outside corner. Didn’t go and the count’s one and two. But that splitter is his pitch. That’s what he threw right there. That’s what his father used to throw. His dad’s was pretty good. Got to throw the pitch and see catch it. He’s got about everything in his arsenal. The pitch swing and a miss. Struck him out. And there was the split again. went after it, came up empty, and he’s down on strike. Hitters will tell you that a wellthrown split is one of the toughest pitches to hit. It’s because of the arm speed. I mean, when you when you come out and you’re basically throwing a fast ball with your fingers spread too far, it looks like a fast ball and then the ball just isn’t there when you swing. You’re swinging at arm speed rather than the pitch itself. Matt plane standing in. That’s what makes a great change up. First pitch to the plane is fast ball taken for strike over the outside corner. It’s nothing and one’s making his 18th start. He’s 3 and seven. The RA 5.40 62 strikeouts against 23 walks over 76 innings. opponents are hitting almost 300 against the 288 in a miss and counts 0 and two on MLAN looking for his first career win against the Reds. Fantrell home with the O2 pitch. There’s a soft bouncer up the first baseline and it just does go outside the bag. Last time the Reds faced Quantrol, he was with the Rockies, that was July of last year. Almost a year ago to the day, July 9th last year, the Reds knocked him out of the game here at Great American Ballpark after two innings. Five runs on four hits. It was kind of one of those games where he looked great to start. Struck out the side in the first inning and then the Reds bombed him in the second. Hit a couple of home runs off of him. faced nine batters and then he was done after two innings. Well, the the problem for Quanfell a lot of times is that he just runs into a bit of trouble against left-handed hitting. Can’t expect him to be out there too terribly long on this day. Only gone more than five innings one time this year. The O2 pitch up and in and Mlan leans back out of the way. Of course, the Marlins are a team that are big believers, especially with certain guys the third time through the order. Curtset one-two pitch to Mlan on popped up foul off the right. The problem that that Cal has is Quantrol is when he is when he’s facing left-handed hitters, that’s normally where he does his best work with the split finger and the the cutter in on their hand. But when he gets hit by left-handers, it creates a problem because he’s just not consistently getting right-handers out. Now, the one-two pitch and Mlan tied up by that fast running in on him. He is down on strikes. backto back strikeouts sponsorful to start the ball game. And as you just mentioned, we’ve seen this story before where he’s come out gang busters and not only against the Reds beginning, but against other clubs. And then he runs into trouble in the bottom of the order, which is incredibly awkward. If you’re a pitcher, you get out the top hitters in the lineup and you’re not getting out the guys that are hitting seven, eight, and nine. Ellie de la Cruz takes a break back door breaking ball that hangs up and away from ball one coming on the net. Ellie had a nice night last night. He went two for four, couple of doubles, drove home two and scored a run. He’s hitting 2770 pitch. Fouls it back out of play. Now he’s becoming a threat from both sides. They’re left-handed right now against the right-handed throwing quantro, but he has been really much improved lately from the right side of the plate. Here’s the 1-1. Cruz takes down and away, and it’s a two ball, one strike count. Well, his patience has been better. And I I think for a power hitter, you can only ask him to be so patient. Two balls, one strike, the pitch to De La Cruz. He watches it right in there for a called strike. Well, he’s tied for eight National League with his 99 hits. He’s not that far behind the leader, Trey Turner, who’s got 111. That pitch looked up. Two ball, two strike down on Ellie de la Cruz. The pitch, he swings and rips a line drive into center field. That’s a hit. That pitch looked smoke. It was a fast ball that was about mid thigh high on the outside corner and Ellie just rifled it into center field. Well, if you’re facing a guy like TJ Fedel and you throw the pitch on the outside corner, Fredel has to maybe take the upper body and go get that pitch. Whereas Ellie, because he has such long arms, he can reach that ball and barrel it with a normal swing as he did just right there. Here’s Austin Hayes. Got to get this guy going. You got that right. Took the words right out of my mouth. Cut her off and played outside. He’s It’s It’s kind of been weird for Hayes since he’s come back from the most recent injury. He’s not hitting all that well. In fact, you look at his numbers. He’s 8 for 44 in his 12 games since returning from the IIL. There’s a strike. Snap throw behind Ellie at first, but he’s back. But of those eight hits, six of them have gone for extra bases. Yeah, he’s got a a little bit of uppercut in his natural swing anyway, but it’s a fine line. You have an uppercut, but if you get too much uppercut, you start to drop that back shoulder and you start popping the ball up or you’re missing. And that’s where he is now. Pitch to Hayes. Little bit up and in with a fast ball. Two balls strike. Strikeouts starting to pile up on him right now. Hunter on at first base with two outs. balls a strike to count on Hayes and the pick and off plate he raises arms up out of the way of it three and one on Hayes Ellie pretty good lead over at first he’s going the pitch and it is a strike and the throw to second is not in time Ellie has a stolen base thought he had ball four but it’s called a strike Reds are probably a little lucky there that Hayes didn’t get called for batter interference because he was on his way down to first thinking it was ball four. Yeah, he he definitely walked across the plate. Surprised that the Marlins didn’t challenge that stolen base for Dea Cruz. That is number 23 on the year for Ellie. Alful count on Hayes. Montfield’s going to back off the rubber. Boy, the outfield is extremely shallow right now for the Marlin. 3-2 pitch and Hayes lines it into left center field. That’s a hit. Here comes Ellie charging around third. Here comes Derek Hill’s throw to the plate. Cut off. The throw goes to second and out at second is Hayes. But the Reds will get the run. It’s one to nothing. They tack on yet another first inning run. Reds have been one of the best teams in baseball at doing that this year. And they’ve done it again. One to nothing Reds at the end of one as we head to the second on the Reds Radio Network. See if you can figure out the following baseball slang term. Today’s phrase is oppo taco. Do you know what it means? Ao taco. A home run hit to the opposite field and it’s a oneun game. Expand your vocabulary by listening to every game on the MLB app and mlb.com. The big hits, all the great brats. You got to be kidding me. and all the swagger. Relive the day’s biggest plays all in one lightning fast hour. Space show. You better believe it. Quick pitch. Late nights and early mornings only on MLB Network. Moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. Smith courts wanting to write down the line. It may go. Go crazy, folks. Go crazy. It’s a home run and the Cardinals have won the game by the three to two on a home run. I am the Wizard. Catch the next unforgettable call on the MLB app and MLB.com. Tom, it is one to nothing Red. Second inning here at Great American Ballpark. It’ll be Eric Wagaman to lead things off for the Marlins here in the second inning. Kicks and fires. First pitch is a strike called over the outside corner. The count is nothing and one. For those of you that are scoring with us, that was 814. It was the pitcher Quantrol that cut that ball off, not the first baseman. Bagaman is the first baseman. He takes outside one ball and one strike. Kind of a weird spot for the pitcher to be. Well, he started to back up behind home plate and then he realized Ellie was going to score and he stopped and turned around and the ball was there. And this ball is hit sharply off the bat of Wagaman past the diving shortstop. De la Cruz and that’s in the left center field. A base hit for Wagon. We looked at the numbers for Nick Lola. A guy that has really done a good job against right-handed hitters. In fact, right-handers hitting just 225 against him. Meanwhile, left-handers are hitting over 300 against LDO. Yet you still see managers load up their lineup with right-handed batters against it. Conor Norby standing in. Here’s the first pitch to Norby and he takes inside and almost hit a breaking ball. Want to know. Yeah, you would think if everybody’s using the computers and the data data analytics like they say that they are that they would understand that there’s a difference here with Lollo and start left-handed hitters. And they don’t do it. 10 pitch and that’s off the inside corner kind of plays into Lenolo’s hands a little bit. If anything, it almost makes him better. The value of left-handed pitcher is how good they are, especially against left-handed pitching or left-handed hitting. But pitch swung on, fouled off the right side. If teams aren’t going to even put their lefties in the lineup, and he’s so much better against right-handers, that just makes him almost exponentially better. Well, what it what it does for Ledo is it allows him to use three different pitches against right-handed hitting, whereas against left-handers, he’s only fast ball slider. No change up. Balls the runner wagon at first base. Here’s the two-1 pitch to Norby. And it’s a little bit low that change up. And the count is or three and one rather three and one on Norby. You know, Norby wants to shoot the ball to right field. He has shown great power in that direction. Homer to right last night going one for three. Also worked a walk. The pitch grounded foul pulled off the front of the Marlins third base dugout. Full count. Three and two. So how do you combat a guy that likes to shoot the ball the other way? Throw him the change up on the inside part of the plate. Let him jam himself. Three balls, two strikes. No ready and from the belt picks to first. Backstanding Wagaman. Wagaman does have three stolen bases. He’s been caught once. It’s not like he’s a guy that runs a ton. Right side of the infield. Wide open right now for Norby. Payoff pitch on the way. And a swing and a miss. Got him with a high fast ball down on strikes. Conor Norby gone here in the second inning. That’s the benefits of that change up inside. And he threw a couple of them. They were pulled foul and then he goes up and away which would normally be right in the honey hole for Connor Norby. And he’s late. One-on-one out. And Dane Meyers at the plate. Meyers hitting 283 with four homers. 22 knocked in. Delivers. Myers takes up and away for ball one. Right-handed hitter, left-handed pitcher, runner at first, one out. One- nothing Reds in the second. Dooo sets, stares down the runner at first. Now to the plate. The pitch too high on the inside corner. Dolo falls behind Meers. Two balls and no strikes. Hey Reds fans, score big game. Score big for game day at Kroger where you’ll find lower prices on over a thousand items so you can save even more. Kroger fresh for everyone. Two balls, no strikes on Meyers. The pitch swung on, popped up, foul first base side. This will throw back into the seats and out of play. Balls strike on Meyers. One on, one out. ready to first again. And again, back to the bag, Wagaman. You’re not really trying to pick Wagaman off there. You’re just trying to make sure that he remembers that you know he’s there when he doesn’t take any due liberties taking off for second. Two-1 pitch. Noo tried the inside corner with a fast ball but missed him. Now three and one. So Meyers way ahead of the count here. Herto Hernandez waiting in the on deck circle. Looo readies and delivers. Swung on and it’s popped into the air. Very short right center field. Mlan is out. In comes Benson. It’s Benson. Make the catch for the second out. here in the second inning. So with two outs, that’ll bring Hernandez the plate as we look at today’s trivia question presented by the Reds Hall of Fame and Museum. Two pitchers who had been allstars during their Reds careers were selected by the Marlins in the 92 major league expansion draft. Jack Armstrong’s one. Who’s the other? to Hernandez. Swinging a miss. Strike one. A Tom Browning. B Rob Dibble or C Danny Jackson one. This is popped into the air. Shallow center. Up goes Mlan. Backpedaling into short center. He’ll make the catch. That does it for the Marlins in the second. Nice job by Ledo to work around the leadoff single. We go to the bottom of the second. Red, take a hack at guessing which baseball player or maner said the following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something. These people cheer. We all did. Reds come to bat here in the bottom of the second inning. It is one to nothing in favor of the Reds. Gavin Lux to lead it off. And first pitch on the way to Lux. He swings, hits a high bouncer to the second base. Edwards fields and throws out Gavin Lux. And there’s one down here in the second. So, we’re both saying see Danny Jackson. I think that there were only so many players that you could protect. And I think the Reds, if I remember correctly, the Reds thought that there was no way that an expansion club would pay the salary that Jackson was making at that time. So, they left him off and he got drafted. I think that’s what happened. I could be wrong, but I I think that’s what happened. Now, the first pitch, Spencer Steer, is taken up an end for ball one. One to nothing on Steer. Vantrol back to work out of the plate. Pitch. Steer swings. He drives it high. Very deep and very gone to left. Way out of here. And no doubter for Steer. His 11th home run of the year. Two nothing Reds. Fast up and in on the first pitch. Montrol came back in there. This time he left it down and he got hurt. That’ll bring up Jose Trovinho for Spencer Steer. That’s his 38th RBI of the pitch to Trevinho. He swings and hits a power fly ball to a very shallow left. Short stop will peel off and Herabito Hernandez is the left fielder. He comes racing in to make the catch and they’re two gone here in the second inning. Now will Benson climb in. There’s pitch to Vincent and that’s a strike taken over the outside corner. Nothing and one. Nobody on. Two away. Two nothing Reds. Quantrol to the plate. Benson takes up and away. Benson went deep last night. Will the home run was his eighth of the year. 1-1. He takes off. Played outside. Scored twice. Was one for four in that ball game last night. Quantrol’s back home now with a two-1 pitch. And it’s a cutter that misses high and outside. Now three and one. So Vincent way ahead of the count. Three balls, one strike. Nobody on. Two men out. Run in for the Reds. And now Quantrol’s 3-1. And Vincent sends one high in the air down the line and left. Racing over Hernandez. He lost it. And it drops just foul outside the left field line. Boy, that is not exactly a textbook route for Hernandez. Somewhere along the way, he lost it. By the time he picked it back up, it was too late to get there. Catchable ball if he’s able to track it the whole way. The Reds catch a break. See if Benson can take advantage of his second life. And the sun’s not even bad out there right now. That’s the tricky part. Montrols 3-2 swing and a miss. Struck him out. Got him with the splitter. Vincson’s down on strikes. That ends the Reds second inning, but Spencer Steer makes it a two nothing Reds lead as we head to Cowboy in the third on Reds Radio. At Broer, you never compromise. The Reds are trying to win and tie the series as the Marlins leave town. First pitch is a breaking ball from the left-hander Lollo. It misses just a bit down to the Marlins catcher Nick Foris. Back to the plate way inside. Pass ball well in off the plate as Foris jack knives out of the way. It’s a two ball no strike count. Odollo sets at the belt. The short step back and here he come. Fast ball pulled foul down the third baseline. Actually that was a change up. Pulled me and he had Forez out in front as well. Two ball, one strike count. Lola with a long look in now. He’ll start and pitch and he misses off the outside corner. Another change up and it’s a three bowl one strike count. We’re starting to see Lollo fall behind in the count now to several hitters. Want to get back early in the count getting ahead. There’s a fast ball right down Broadway. Three ball two strike count here to Nick Foris. right-handed batter. We’ve seen him more in this series than what we did in Miami. Of course, Ramirez not quite the catcher that Nick Foris is. Ground ball, short stop, actually caught in the air. I thought that was going to one hop de la Cruz, but Ellie got to it quickly. Caught it in the air. Little fading line drive on down. I think for a lot of short stops that is a one hopper. Ellie did a good job to come in and get it. Anytime you can catch it on the air, you’re a little better serve. That’s some pretty good reach there. True stunt. Here’s Derek Hill right-handed hitting center fielder. And Lollo comes and it’s fouled to the right side out of play to Seamer riding up and away from the right-handed hitting Derek Hill. 205 Hill is sitting on the year. He does not walk much and he strikes out a lot. So what does that tell you? He’s swinging. You do not have to throw him a whole lot of strikes. You can miss high, you can miss down. Looo from the belt, the step, the pitch, swing, and a miss. There’s that high heater and right through it is Derek Hill for strike two. He was late on the first pitch. He was really late on that one. I got to go back up there and I got to go a little higher. No ball. Two strike count. Looo from the set. Here he comes. And he goes higher. And this time he’ll lays off. Maybe if you get that in the center of the plate rather than over the outside corner, you might get a trigger. But at least you showed it to him. One ball, two strike count. Ad Looo to the plate. back door breaking ball and that just barely misses off the outside edge. Tried to bring that curve ball back to the outside corner and definitely had Hill on his heels. Two ball two strike count. And here’s the pitch from Lollo. Strike the recall. a fast ball bullseye right over the inside corner to talk about not getting that pitch called a strike very often. You could even see the reaction of Hill. He saw it as a pitch in. It was right there on the inside edge. It was called properly by Jeremy Rehack. But it’s just such a tough angle for everybody involved. I think part of it too is being able to get inside that ball with the mit so that the heel of your glove is actually of your catcher’s mid is actually pushing forward as you catch that pitch. It’s a tough pitch for a catcher cuz if you miss anything at all, it’s going to hit off the heel of the glove and you’re going to miss it. So two down, we go back to the top of the order. Here’s Xavier Hern, not Hernandez, Xavier Edwards. I like that fell by the way. Played with him a good time here in Cincinnati. Xavier Hernandez. Now he had quite the split finger too I might add. One ball, no strike count here to Xavier Edwards who flyed to right in his first at bat. And the change up. This is off the outside corner. And again, Lollo behind in the count of two and 0. Lollo trying to retire the Marlins in order for the second time here this afternoon and to the plate and a fast ball right at the bottom of the zone right over the outside corner. Two ball one strike count. That sun is starting to play a little bit of havoc on the left fielders. It is creeping through the clouds. Fouled straight back. A fast ball right down Broadway. I bet Edwards would like to have that one back. Ah, that was center cut. Not going to get You should get a better pitch to hit. I hope he doesn’t get a one better than that. Two balls and two strikes. Looo trying to put him away here. The pitch and he misses just off the outside corner. Another change up. and the count will run full. A busy first three innings for Lollo as far as the pitch count. Here’s a looping liner down the right field line. That’s going to be a base hit. By the time the ball hit the ground, this is how softly that ball was hit. It hit the ground and bounced up into the glove of Spencer Steer who was running down the line. It kind of hit off the tip of the glove when it bounced up and then it bounced away from Steer. Edwards probably kicking himself that he didn’t try to get to second base on that ball because after it bounced away from Steer, I think Edwards would have had time to get to second, especially with his speed. Mhm. That’s one where even if you hesitate for a second, you got no chance. And here is the designated hitter, Augustine Ramirez. Pick to first base. That’ll send Edwards back to the bag. Edwards can run and will run. He’s got 15 stolen bases on the year, although he has been caught six times. But he’s got a chance to get into scoring position with two down if indeed he can steal second base. And again, Lollo will pick that way. And quickly back to the bag is Edwards. Ramirez popped out to Spencer Steer down the rank field line in his first atbat, but he has presented quite a difficult issue at the plate for the Reds here in the season series. Change up off the outside corner. It’s a one bowl, no strike count. We saw Ramirez in his first major league ball game and he wore the he has been wearing the reds out since then. He had seven doubles in five games. The pitch wing and a miss. Good change up around the zone, not in the zone. That is the key to getting Augustine Ramirez out. He is definitely up there to swing the bat. He is not up there to walk. That is not in his vocabulary. The one-1 swing and a miss. High fast ball well above the zone and Ramirez right through it for strike two. Kind of reminds me of the old Gary Sanchez at that. He is up there squatting down, feet spread out trying to pull the ball into the left field seats if you leave it over the plate. Here’s the one two. There goes the runner and it’s fouled to the right side out of play. That was a four seamer that was about 3 to 4 in off the outside corner and up and Ramirez was trying to flip it into right field. Count stays a ball in two strikes here on the designated hitter for the Marlin. Ledo trying to make a pitch here. Back to the plate. There goes the runner. The throw to second and they will not get him. Looked like Trevino came out of there quickly with the throw to second, but Edwards just with great speed. It was a high fast ball and a good pitch to actually throw on. Ren just couldn’t get him. So now the runner stands at second base and Edwards. Anything that gets into the outfield, he’s going to score. But it’s a two ball, two strike count. Looo looking for a strike count right here the pit and it’s a change up downstairs and the count will run full and we have seen a lot of full counts since the first inning and that’s the reason that Looo’s pitch count is at 56 and this will be pitch number 57 here in the third. Lefty from the belt. Breaking ball popped up. And I mean it is way up there. Right on top of it is the catcher Trovinho. Oh, he had to hold his breath on that one. That ball was heading back towards the mound. Trevinho had to spin all the way around. And let’s see if you can figure out the following baseball slang term. Today’s phrase is oppo taco. That’s Mike Piaza after he hit an eighth inning go ahead home run in the Marlins come to bat here in the fourth inning. Reds are on top two to nothing. Good afternoon for baseball or great American ballpark. Sun kind of in and out of clouds today. And right now it is blasting left field and center field. Here’s the first pitch to Otto Lopez. Got the miss. Strike one. Yeah, it’s interesting watching Mlan when he takes the field. There’s so many intricate things that he does playing second base. The first thing that he does when he takes the field in this kind of atmosphere with the sun is he looks up just to check the sun right before Looo throws the ball to the plate. One swung on and that is fouled right off of the leg of Otto Lopez. He goes the ground in a heat but hobbles back to his feet. He’ll go for a little stroll up the third baseline. So the first time that you think about well Matt Mlan’s only hitting 204. What happened to this guy? Well, what happened is left shoulder surgery. And that shoulder surgery for many players, not only him, but a lot of guys, it takes some time. That’s his front shoulder to hit with. It’s hard to lift that shoulder and that front elbow to get to those high pitches. And it’s a small reaction, but you watch him play the field and you think, man, this is some kind of smart player. This is the guy that we were after. O2 line to right field. There’s Benson. He started in. Now, that ball gets on him in a hurry. was able to make a catch, squaring a little bunny hop right at the end. Put it away. Lopez is the first out here in the fourth. I think the hope for the Reds is that as you and I were talking about that Matt Mlan starts to climb that hill a little bit in the second half of the season, maybe get some more flexibility in that shoulder. I mean, he’s hitting early every day. You can’t do any more than what the kid’s doing. Here’s the pitch to Wagman and that’s in there for a called strike. count as nothing in one. There are plenty of guys that have gone through the the same type of surgery that the plane has had that it’s taken him a year. Takes a while. Swinging a miss. Nothing and two now on Wagman. Base is empty, one out. Reds are up two to nothing in the fourth. The Doolo back to his wind up and here comes the O2 pitch. Hung on. This ball’s in the air right center field. Moving that way is Fredel. He’ll make the call in the catch for the second out here in the fourth inning. And boy, this would be big if the Doolo could get a nice easy one, two, three, fourth inning. He could use one of those to get that pitch count back in order. A matter of fact, he could use a couple of them. We were talking about it during the third that Billy Ledo has had to labor quite a bit through the first three innings. Now he deals with Connor Norby struck out his first time up. Here’s the pitch to Norby. Swung on and fouled straight back. This is a right-handed hitter that has not hit lefties well at all. hitting only 172 against left-handed throwers because he likes to shoot the ball the other way and he runs out of bat against the left-hander because majority of left-handed pitching the ball tails away from you and he hits the ball off the end of the bat rather than the barrel. One pitch is a change up off the outside corner. One ball, one strike to count on Connor Norby. Solo struck him out his first time up. Now the 1-1. Swung on. Hit on the ground. Deep third but fouled. Pretty good play by Marte even though it was foul. Ball had a little hair on it. Over there was able to make the backhanded pickup. Didn’t matter. Handed behind the bag just outside the left field line. One ball, two strikes on Norby back into his wind up. The one two and strike three called. Got him looking back door. Breaking ball. Shaves the outside corner. Inning over. There is the one, two, three inning for Lollo. And he picks up his third strike out along the way. We go take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager said the following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something. These people cheer. We all did. On 700 WLW Reds, fourth inning. Here’s the first pitch to Da Cruz and he takes two high for ball one. The count is one to nothing now on Ellie. Ellie singled and scored the Red’s first run. First time up. Now the one pitch Cruz swings, pops it up. Foul third base side and this will throw back into the seats out of play. One ball, one strike to count on Dea Cruz. Pitch, he swings and lifts this one high into the air. Left side, short stop out and it’ll be Otto Lopez to make the catch to retire Dea Cruz for the first out here in the fourth inning. All right, let’s revisit that Reds Hall of Fame and Museum trivia question of the game. Question was, two pitchers who had been allstars during their Red’s careers were selected by the Marlins 92 Major League Baseball expansion draft. Jack Armstrong was one. Who was the other? Tom Browning, Rob Dibble, or Danny Jackson. We both said C. Danny Jackson. Ready to say with that? It’s a guess for sure. Yeah, me too. It felt like a good guess though. And it was C. Andy Jackson was a guess, but it felt right. You know what I mean? Hayes takes down and away. Hayes delivered a base hit his first time up. It scored De La Cruz from second base. Hayes was trying to go first to third, but was cut down. They throw home was cut off by the pitcher. Swing and a miss. The count ball and two strikes on Hayes. Danny Jackson, an all-star with the Reds in 88, was a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates when he was drafted by the Marlins with the 54th pick in the expansion draft. Hey, shoots a line drive to right center field, but there is center fielder Derek Hill coming on to make the catch. He’s hit it hard. It looked like off the bat he spot, but the Marlins had him played perfect. Well, Hill was shading right center anyway, and he got terrific speed. He was able to cut that one down in a hurry. Then traded Danny Jackson to the Phillies at the conclusion of the draft. Here’s the pitch to Gavin Lux. Lux takes a splitter off the outside corner. Knew they weren’t going to pay that salary. Right. Here’s the one to Lux. And that’s fouled away at home plate. One ball, one strike on Lux. Nobody on. Two men are out. Reds are leading it two to nothing. That’s scored in the first. Ellie with a two out single. Still second. Scored on the Austin Hayes base hit. Then Spencer Steer launched one out of here to left with one out in the second. Now Hayes skies one to center, battling the Sun. Derek Hill coming on. We’ll make the catch in shallow center field for the final out of the Reds four. Reds are down in order again here in the fourth inning. Still two nothing through four. You go to the fifth on the Reds Radio Network. Off base is coming in a brand new format. Combo Taco a home run hit to the opposite field touched out three over four innings of shutout baseball so far this afternoon against the Marlins Dane Meyers stand in Meyers Hernandez and Fortez against the lefty Lollo Nick into his wind up his first pitch on the way to Meyers but it’s a strike just barely really caught the outside corner of that curve wall. He’s getting a little generosity on that outside edge right now, but he’s been very consistent out there and that’s part of the reason that outside corner is starting to expand. Elan has popped into the air. Very short center. Mlan goes out. Fredel comes in. It’s Fredel the shallows of center field to make the catch for the first out in the fifth inning. If you’re listening today on your car truck radio, please remember to buckle your safety belt. This message brought to you by the Ohio Department of Public Safety. You’re not buckled up. What’s holding you back? With one out, here is Herabberto Hernandez. Take a peek at today’s stumper. Handled the trivia question. So, well, see how the stumper goes. Pitch cut on and miss. Curve ball. Strike one. In the last 40 years, four left-handed starting pitchers have made the All-Star team while playing for the Reds. Can you name these four left-handed starting pitchers who made the All-Star team while playing for the Reds? Back off of all time. 40 years. Last 40 years. The one pitch to Hernandez is too hot. How about Danny Jackson? Okay. Danny Jackson. Tom Browning. Tom Browning. And the next one is the last guy to do it. Abbott the first guy since this guy to do it. Swung on. Lined up the middle. Leaving stop. Mlan on one big hop. Hops to his feet. Throws close. Not in time. Oh, that was about to be some kind of spectacular play by Mlan. Looked like Mlan turned the wrong way to throw back to first. Had he turned back towards second base, I think that split second might have helped him. But his body was so awkward in the dive, he probably felt like that was quicker going the way that he went. Well, he actually had to go airborne. Yeah. To glove it. So, because he had to wait to land. Great play. Had to wait until he landed. Had to bounce a little bit. Get back to his feet. Here’s Forz. He blunts it right out front of home plate. Trovinho is going to go to second and they got him. Out at second is Hernandez on a heads up play by Trevinho. The go is a fieldielder’s choice on that bunt. 24 is the out at second base. Now Derek Hill struck out looking his first time up. John Smiley. Boom. Now you pretty much have it. Here’s the pitch to Derek Hill off the plate outside. Andrew. Andrew Abbott. There you go. I kind of gave away Andrew Rabbit, although it’s pretty much the free space anyway. Academic. Danny Jackson, an all-star in 1988, as we just learned in the trivia question. Was 95 and there for strike. Correct. Do you remember what year Tom Browning was an all-star? Um, I’m gonna say 90. 91. 91. Pretty good company. He wasn’t there at 90 cuz I was there at 90. What am I thinking about? Here’s the 1-1. And Hill swings and lifts it high into the air. Center field. TJ Fredel moving back on it. Shy the track. He’s under it. He’s got it. And that’ll do it for the Marlins in the fifth inning. A hit surrendered by Lolo, but still a pretty quick fifth. We’re halfway through it at Great American Ballpark with the Reds up two nothing. Hit high into the air and hold fouled now the left field line. That’s ball back into the season and out of play. Two balls, two strikes. And now Augustine Ramirez pointing into the dugout. I think he needs a new bat. That one right off the end of the bat. There’s a breaking ball coming towards him. Pulled the trigger. He must not keep his bats where everybody else keeps theirs. He was pointing way down to the down of the middle of the dugout instead of down by the bat rack. You keep him near a heater or something. Private stash two on Ramirez. Looo to the plate. Swing and a miss. Good curve ball down. He had Ramirez swinging right over the top of it. Around the plate, not on the plate. How many times have I said that now? A couple. I’ve heard it before. I think sounds familiar. Starting to resonate. Two out. Here’s Otto Lopez. Lopez popped short line to right. The dooo throwing from bright sunshine immediately into the shadows. Yeah, that’s tough. That is not ideal if you’re a hitter. Hitters will tell you this is a tough place to hit this time of day. 6:30 right now. Here’s the one pitch to Otto Lopez. Swinging in a foul tip at the plate. One ball, one strike because everything in the background is bright. I mean, very bright. Better say there is a little bit of a glare at the plate this time of day because the way the sun is shining on the background. One ball, one strike. Here’s the 1-1 pitch to Lopez. Swung on. Check swing and a pitch down and in. And they ask it first. No swings. Chris Conroy, the crew chief. The ball is two strike. Ready at the belt. And here comes the two- two. Instead, Jose Trovinho is going to go to the mound. I don’t know that the two were on the same page and that that’s a good move by Trovinho because even if even if you’re not on the same page, if there’s a certain pitch that Mullo wants to throw and Trevinho doesn’t agree with it, at least there’s a conversation so that you’re sold on the pitch that you’re making right here. It’s a two- two count. You got two outs. You got a chance to get out of this with an easy inning. Well, the conversation’s over. Nolo trying for his third one, two, three inning here in his first six. Nolo’s at 90 pitches right now as he works in the sixth inning. Here it comes. And it’s hit right back up the middle. He’s an everyday schmo just like you and me. Scott Slow tomorrow morning at 9 on 700 WL cowboy Jeff Brantley our producer engineer Dave Giddy our producer our studio producer today Joe Wadell I’m Tommy Thraw great to be with you here great American ballpark Marte stands in swings and lines it to right center field that’s in the gap and it’s cut off by the right fielder Myers big turn at first for Marte but he’ll hang on there with a leadoff single here in the sixth inning so here’s Quantrol pitching into the sixth And you got to imagine they’re going to keep a pretty close eye on him at this point. They are very reluctant to let their starters face a lineup a third time. A nice swing by Noelby Marte. Tell you when he is going to the right side of second base. Good things begin to happen. We saw it start in last night’s ball game with a home run and the single the other way. DJ Fredel flashes to punt, pulls the bat back and takes the ball and the count is one and0 as Graham Ashcraft begins throwing in the Red’s bullpin. Might be the end of the night for Nick Lollo. 10 takes a strike on the outside corner. Good cutter from Fontrol. Well, Lavilla was getting handshakes when he came into the dugout. So, I imagine that’s all she wrote. One ball, one strike on Fredel. Artee off the bag at first. He’s running the pitch. Fredel swings, hits it right back up the middle. That’s into center field. A hit. Here comes Marte around to third and the Reds have him at the corners with nobody out in the sixth inning. Oh boy, that’s fun. Got a runner on the move and you find a hole on the infield. Now you can first and third him to death. I mean, he hit it perfectly just to the second base side of the bag. Kept it away from the shortstop Lopez who’s going to cover at second base. Now the Reds have some serious pressure on Quantrol late in his outing. Matt Mlan standing infield in the pitch. Mlan takes in the dirt ball one. Get a huge break off first base but stays put on that pitch in the dirt and was tempted stayed right where he’s at. I mean the Reds played a run in the first and the second inning but this is the most trouble that Quattro has been in yet and it comes here in the sixth inning. 10 inside almost hit MLAN. He twists out of the way of ball two. Yeah, those were kind of quick strike runs by the Reds. Two out single by De La Cruz after he stole second. A singled him home a batter later and then was thrown out trying to go to second. Here’s the two out back. Two balls and strike. And it was a one-out solo home run by Spencer Steer. And the Reds hadn’t had a base runner against Quantrol until leadoff single to right center field to begin this inning. Two nothing Reds. They’re at the corners with nobody out. Fontrol ready at the belt. Here comes the two-1 pitch. In too tight. The plane started but stopped in time. Didn’t offer. And now it’s a three ball, one strike count. And you know that Guantan doesn’t want to load him up for Ellie for a couple of reasons. One, he probably won’t face Da Cruz if it gets that far. The 3-1 pitch flung on, fouled back, and there’s not a starter in this world that is comfortable leaving the mound with the bases loaded and nobody out. Full count. Three and two on Mlan. It does not normally end well for your line of scope or your erra for that matter. Can make a good day bad real quick. Here’s the payoff and it is ball four. Just a little bit high to Mlan. And now they’re loaded and here comes Ellie. Marlins are showing that they’re going to stick with Guantano. He’s kind of looking into the dugout right now, wondering if they’re going to come get him. They’re sticking with him. La Cruz is up there. Base is loaded, nobody out. Quantrol sets, he throws, and he misses off the outside corner with a breaking ball. And the count is one and0. Ellie singled back in the first inning. His 100th hit of the year. 10 pitch. Ellie swings and fouls this off to the left side. And that’s not nothing. Those hundred hits before the All-Star break make him just the second shorts stop in Red’s history with a 100 hits before the All-Star game. The other Barry Larkin. The one-1 too high. Lark’s in the Hall of Fame. Yeah, he’s he had a nice career. And the other company he joins is Pete Rose, who’s the only other switch hitter with a 100 hits for the Reds before the All-Star break. He’s about to be in the Hall of Fame. I think two-1 pitch to Da Cruz. Swing and a miss and a splitter down. And now the count is even. Two balls and two strikes. Bases loaded, nobody out. Fontrol ready at the belt. Here’s the 2-2 to De La Cruz. And he takes just off the outside corner. That splitter runs away. Now the count’s full here. No place to put him. Quantrol come set now. on the payoff pitch to De La Cruz. Swung on and lined through the right side. Base hit. Here comes Marte to the plate. They’ll have to hold. Fredel at third. Now the throw gets away off Quantrol’s glove. Everybody’s going to move up 90 ft. Quantrol was standing in front of the catcher. And when that throw came home, he actually leaped up and it hit right off the top of his glove and went to the back stop. Well, Quantrol is not supposed to be there anyway. I think they’re actually going to give Quantrol the error. They scored an E9. It should be Quantrol’s error. Second and third. Nobody out. Two runs home for the Reds. It’s now four to nothing. And now it’s the pitching coach going to the mound. Daniel Moscow, not the manager. So, they’re going to stick with Quantrol right here. Even though the Reds are really swinging the bats well this third time through the order against him. So, Ellie will get credit for one RBI. The error leads to the second run. I mean, that was actually a perfect throw from the right fielder Myers. It was right to home plate. And because Quantrol cut in front of the catcher, he’s not even supposed to be there. He’s supposed to be behind the play. He leaps up. It hits off of his glove and they give the air to the right fielder. I mean, it was going to be perfect. A chest high throw to the catcher. Now, Hayes, the pitch, swing and a miss. Strike one. Infield in for the Marlins. Four nothing Reds. And now the Reds are about one swing of the bat away from blowing this thing wide open. The one in the dirt. Good block by the catcher for the count. A ball and a strike on Hayes. Quantrol sets at the belt. The 1-1. And this is hammered but pulled foul down the left field line into the seats. Had plenty of distance. Oh, did it ever. Just a little early. All in two strikes on Hayes. Reds have three hits in this inning. They’ve all been beautiful singles, too. Montrol home with a one-two in too tight. And what I mean by that is Marte’s base hit was a nice line drive the other way. With Marte in motion, TJ Fredel lined a solid single up the middle and Ellie a nice base hit through the drawn and infield on the right side. 2-2 way inside. Full count now on Hayes. Just a lot of really nice pieces of hitting by the Reds here in this inning. Not the big over swings, not guys trying to do too much team hitting. Full count on Hayes. Three balls, two strikes. The payoff swung on. That’s grounded through the left side. A little bleeder right between short and third. One runs home. Here comes Ellie. Here comes the throw to the plate. Not in time. It hits off the catcher. Forz rolls in front of him and Hayes goes to second. Single and two RBI’s for Hayes. 6 nothing Reds. He goes to second on the throw. It is a fourrun sixth inning and there’s still nobody out. Three split fingers in a row. And the last one, Hayes kind of hit that off his handle, but he got enough on the ball to get it between short and third. And with Ellie running, it’s just a little overtona out to the mound. He’s going to take the ball from Quantrol. That’s going to be the end of his day. He will exit with a runner at second base and nobody out in the six. Reds lead it six to nothing. Tell you all about the new pitcher. take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager said the following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something. If you’re not watching this show, you’re the information and resources for help. Enriquez comes out of the Marlins bullpen, 5-1 on the year with a 2.72 erra in 40 appearances and he saved five ball games. That that was an awfully weird inning for the Marlins. There was nobody up and as you mentioned Tommy Quantrol has been a five inning pitcher predominantly the entire year and nobody’s up. I you know I in a two in a two nothing game. And when you’re organizationally reluctant to let a pitcher face a lineup a third time through, you’d think they’d maybe the pitch to Gavin Luck swung on, fouled off the left side, have somebody just in case. Well, the the answer post game is going to be, well, his pitch count was really low. You’re either going to do it and not let him go three times through the lineup or you’re not. It’s one or the other. 0 and one. The count on Lux. Rightander sets and delivers. The 01 pitch is on the outside corner for a called strike. That’s one of those times where the computer begins to glitch and it doesn’t quite have the same feed that it had from the internet and and you don’t know what to do. So, you just sit there. Oh, and two on Lux. Enriquez has the sign. Straightened, sets, and the O2 pitch up too high. Ball and two strikes on Lux. Of course, it could have been, hey, Quantra might have said, look, I can pitch six innings. Leave me in the game. Well, they left him. One, two is in the dirt now. Two ball two strike count on Lux. It is now six to nothing Reds. Quantrol still responsible for Hayes down at second base. Reds try to finish this series even with the Marlins. Two up, two down. Marlins won the first two. Reds trying to win the last two and carry a little momentum into the Rockies series. They’ll come in over the weekend. Two two pitch to Lux and a breaking ball is strike three called. Pretty good one there from the right-hander. Lux is down on strikes. That’s the first out here in the sixth. Now Spencer Steer Steer hit the home run back in the second inning. And that home run is today’s tickets for less home run for Reds. Snoop Dogg and Bengals tickets plus more tickets for less.com. Snoop Snoop. Swing and a miss. Breaking ball down and away. I wonder if his friend in the green hat’s going to be here when he has the postgame concert later. It’s old Dominion today starting to fill in a little bit. It is very much so. 5:00 start times tricky one. Here’s the 01 up and in. One ball and one strike on Steer. One of those, especially on a weak pit, right? Folks don’t know whether to take off work or leave a little early and then you’ve got the rush hour traffic to contend with. Or I’ll meet you down there, honey. Bring the kid. Here’s the 1-1 here. Watches a breaking ball in there for a called strike. He’s behind the count. One and two. A lot of cowboy boots in the ballpark today. Don’t you know I love that? Couple sit to my left. One and two on Steer. Right hander readies and Henriquez the plate with a one-two pick. Breaking ball just a little bit down and away. Two balls and two strikes now on Steer. I would imagine there’s a couple more down there two doors down in the TV booth too. I bet there is. Two balls, two strikes to count on Steer. Hay’s down at second. The two pitch swing and a miss. Struck him out. Did you have a deal with a cowboy boot company when you were playing? I did not. Were you wearing them then or did you start that a little later? Been around a long time. I don’t know if you know this or not, but your plane was maybe what some might consider. It was. It was. So you could still have been wearing them a long time. I’ve been wearing them. Here’s Trevino then and now. So I’ve been wearing them a long long time. I don’t know on Trevinho. You know those 40ear questions. I’m all over them. That’s your my wheelhouse. One ball. No strikes on Trovinho for two pitch. And there’s the strike. That’s a low one. That’s a six nothing strike. Hay’s down at second. Two in are out. Four run sixth inning for the Reds and they’ve opened up a six nothing lead. There’s the 1-1ho went after it. It was way up and way in. He came up empty. Ball and two strikes on Trovinho. spinning the bat around waiting on Henriquez. Here’s the one twoan fouled back. All in two strikes. The count. Right-hander against right-hander. And the one-two pitch. This ball popped into the air. Foul off the first base side. Twisting well back into the seats and out of play. One and two on Trevinho. Number 44, Ellie Dea Cruz is an all-star and we’re celebrating with $4 beers and $4 sodas this weekend against the Rockies. Ball in two strikes. The pitch Drevinho swings and misses. So nice job by Henriquez. He comes out of that Marlin bullpen and strikes out all three faces. Reds though played four in the sixth inning and we go to the seventh. Back to Cowboy. Boston for a Wolver’s Mustard pitching change. Wolver’s Mustard. Let’s put some mustard on it. And that pitching change is Graeme Ashcraft coming on for Lollo after six shutout innings for the Reds left-hander. Looo will take a shut out for six innings. And now Ashcraft on the hill. And the first pitch to Eric Wagaman is a cutter downstairs. One ball, no strike count. Couple changes for the Reds defensively on the left side. Espanol is now at third base. Connor Joe’s in the game in left. Another fast ball. Misses off the inside corner. Two balls and no strikes here to the right-handed hitting Eric Wagaman. Wagaman one for two against Lollo. It is a 6 nothing Reds lead. Ashcraft to the plate and he’s going to miss downstairs and it’s 3 and 0 right now. Ashcraft doing a little landscaping on the mound, if you will, with his spikes in the landing area. He’s got to figure out how to get the ball over the plate. Three ball, no strike count. And he walked him. Fast ball sails up and in. And so the first batter that Ashcraft faces is four straight pitches out of the zone. And that’ll bring Connor Norby to the plate. Norby probably glad that he’s not seeing Nicolo again. He struck out on a fast ball up and away swinging. Second time up, struck out looking on a curveball that came in the back door. And there’s a line drive back up the middle. A base hit. And the first two batters are aboard for the Marlins here against Ashcraft in the seventh. Kind of makes you feel a whole lot better about that four run six inning. Those were some big runs. We had just got done talking in between the innings there, but it would be nice if the Reds could play a little add-on. They did in a big way. Now you got a little breathing room. Jesus Sanchez off the bench is the normal rightfielder for these Marlins. Left-handed power hitter. He will step to the plate and they’ve got Kyle Sters as well along with Liam Hicks. As a matter of fact, the pitch from Ashcraft fast ball strike one right at the top of the strike zone. Sourers is standing on deck. Ashcraft checks second once. Pitch cutter up and in. It’s going to miss a bit high. And it’s a one bowl, one strike count here to Jesus Sanchez. Bashcraft back to the dish and he’s going to miss outside and it is two and one and with that will head out to the mound. Let’s pause for identification here on the Reds radio network. Right now, Trevinho, instead of jogging to the mound, he walked to the mound. And a lot of times when the catcher is doing that, he’s just trying to take a little air out of the game, a little pressure out of the ball game. Try to give the pitcher a chance to reather his thoughts, maybe relax a little bit so the inning doesn’t escalate. It’s a two ball, one strike count. First and second for the Marlins. Nobody out here in the seventh. Reds are leading 6 nothing. Ashcraft to the plate. Here’s a looping fly ball right center. Long run and what a catch by Will Benson. A sliding snag at the shoe top level and he comes up with it. That is a big time play. One down. He came racing in full speed, went into a feet first rolling slide as he made the catch. Kind of rolling back over to his feet, popped up ready to make a throw in case one of the runners was trying to advance. Not only a great catch, but great presence of mind to come up ready to make a throw. Great play by Benson. Here’s Kyle Sters. He will pinch it for Herberto Hernandez. left-handed hitter and he will take a pitch just a bit down. That’s been a strike all day and then some, but not in this circumstance. When you’re behind in the count when you first get out there, you don’t get the benefit of the doubt. And that is ball one. One ball, no strike count to Stard. That’ll catch the outside corner right at the top of the zone. One and one now to the left-handed hitting Allstar. The pitch down and in. A slider well off the plate. Two ball, one strike count. And Ashcraft right now is on the struggle bus trying to get the ball over the plate. Two and one, one down in the inning. And that’s going to miss slow. Three and one. Tony Santion getting up in a hurry. 3-1 pitch coming and that will catch the outside corner as Sters throws the bat towards the dugout. He was heading down to first base. It was a back door cutter and it just did catch the top of the strike zone barely, but it did. I mean, it was a strike. Nice job of receiving there by Trevvinho. He just kind of kind of cuped that at the top of the zone as he made the catch on the 98 mph cutter. Sters will call timeout. Block will reset. Sters back into the box. Big pitch right here. Three balls and two strikes. Here’s Ashcraft and he walked. Second walk of the inning. That will load the bases. I would imagine that will bring I thought it would bring Derek Johnson to the mound. It will not. I thought if it didn’t bring DJ out, it would bring the manager out. So, here’s Liam Hicks. The three batters that we talked about on the bench for the Marlins, all left-handed. They did not start. They start every ball game against a right-handed starter. That would be Sanchez, Sters, and now Hicks. Her batting in order. Ashcraft to the plate. And there is strike one right over the outside corner. And this time, Ashcraft jumps ahead in the count. He’s got one out. So, if he can get a ground ball in an infielder, he’s got a chance to pull the rabbit out of the hat and get out of this inning without any damage. The righty sets. He’ll turn it loose. Grow ball. It is right to Taylor Cruz. He will step on second. And there’s the rabbit right out of the hat. A double play. 63 double play by the refs allstar Ellie de la Cruz and the bases load in. But a great contribution on the defensive side with a phenomenal play out in right field with runners at first and second. If that ball falls, that is major trouble. First pitch is a strike from Simpson right over the outside corner. Now the lefty turns it loose. Fast ball misses down and away. One bowl, one strike count here to Benson. Reds leading this final game of the series and trying to split this four-game series at home in their final home stand before the All-Star break. Swinging a miss. Slider right down Broadway. One bowl, two strike count. Reds lost the first two game of the series, won yesterday in deciding fashion and are leading six to nothing here this afternoon with two and a half innings to play. Left-hander Simpson turns it loose. Breaking ball that’s just a tad low. Two balls in two strikes here to Benson. It’ll be Benson Espanol and then TJ Fedel. Simpson from the set to the plate and it’s a jam shot. Grounder to first. Wagaman has it. He’ll step on the bag and that’s the first out of the inning. One down. So here is Espenol. Espenol came on defensively in the top of the inning for Noel Varte. And now he will get his first atbat of the ball game. Simpson out of the stretch. He turns it loose. Breaking ball. Misses down and in. One bowl. No strength count here to Espanol. Esol hitting at a 244 clip. And as we mentioned yesterday, he has played in a multitude of positions for the Reds this year. Same as last year. Strike over the outside corner. Fast ball tailing away. Espenol started and stopped as the ball started to fade away from him. One ball, one strike count. Back to the plate. Simpson back to a breaking ball that will catch the outside corner and it’s a one bowl, two strike count. Hey, Espanol gives you an upgrade in just about the majority of the positions that he can play. Not that he couldn’t play anywhere, but ground ball left side. That’s a base hit into left field and he’s swinging a little bit too. I think a big reason why the you saw the average dip a little bit for Espanol, he was getting worn out. I mean, this is a guy that’s not really accustomed to playing every day and he red uniform. Yeah, certainly not in a red. I mean, it’s been a few years since he played every day and out of necessity. He’s basically the Red’s utility player, but he was planning to play every day, mostly at third base. So, here’s TJ Fredel and he will take a pitch that looked like it was right there at ball one. Boy, you got to love that. remember talking to Espanol a little while ago and I said, “Do you have to kind of adjust your pregame routine?” Goes, “I’m I’m having to now.” 10 from Simpson and a breaking ball is going to miss off the outside. One or two balls and no strikes here to the left-handed hitting Freedom. Matt Mlan waiting on deck. That was tough for Espanol because he loves to take a ton of ground balls, but you can wear yourself out doing that. Got to keep those legs up underneath you. Here’s the two pitch. And that will be a strike down and away from Fredel. Two ball, one strike count here to the Red’s leadoff hitter. Fredle one for three so far here on the afternoon. Here’s Simpson. And that’s a strike. Another fast ball right at the bottom of the zone. I’m sure Fredel’s seeing that as low, but that’s a strike. They both work. Two balls and two strikes here to the TJ Fredel. Fredle with a big squat at the knees as he does most often with two strikes. Simpson to the plate, swinging a miss. Got him with a breaking ball. Two down. So here’s Mlan. Mlan drew a walk with runners at first and second to load the bases in the six to set up the big swing of the bat by Ellie de la Cruz and then Austin Hayes and he’ll try to move Espanol along with two outs here. Pitch from Simpson. Back door breaking ball catches the outside corner and the Marlin lefty quickly ahead. A no ball one strike count. Mlan 0 for two today. Struck out and he has popped out to third to go along with that walk that he came around to score in the sixth. No ball, one strike count. Inside looked like a change up that time. down and in to Mlan. That’ll even count at one ball and one strike. Boy, Simpson just barely gets the ball away in time when you’re watching the clock there. A lot of times that clock ticks down to just about 1 second before he cuts it loose. And he misses inside with a fast ball here. It’s a two ball, one strike count. I’m sure Mlan would like to do a little damage in his own right here. Breaking ball that’s going to miss inside. And it’s a 3-1 count. And Ellie starting to dust that bat with a little rosin as he prepares to come to the plate in case Mlan gets on again. Here’s the 3-1 from Simpson and he walked him. Fast ball tailing up and away. And that indeed will bring Ellie De la Cruz to the plate. Runners at first and second base as Ellie moves around to the right side for the first time this afternoon. Ellie has singled, stolen the base, and scored. That came in the first inning. Popped out to the shorts stop in the fourth. Singled into right field in the six to drive homer run. 13 for his last 34 against left-handed pitching. Here’s Simpson. Ground ball fouled down the third baseline. Four extra base hits in that mix, including three home runs. That goes back now over a month. De La Cruz against South. No ball, one strike count here to de la Cruz. The lefty to the plate and he’s going to miss downstairs with a change up. Well underneath the strike zone. It’s a one ball, one strike. Ellie readies at the plate. The lefty turns it and it’s a tapper foul off the front foot of Dea Cruz. One ball, two strike count. Reds have eight hits on the board to go with their six runs. Marlins with four hits. They have yet to dent the plate and they have had some opportunities. They’ve just been unable to do it. Ellie stands ready as the left-hander comes to the set and to the plate and he’s going to miss inside for ball two. The patience that he’s showing at the plate right now I think is the thing that stands out the most. Two ball two strike count. He forces pitchers to throw him strikes. Simpson high breaking ball and that is called strength three. So the Reds will strand a couple of base runners, but they do lead the Marlins as we head on to the eighth. 6 nothing in the Red’s favor. Let’s put some mustard on it. Tony Santion out of the red bull pin for the second day in a row. Santan will deal with Derek Hill leading off the Marlins eighth inning. First pitch to him is off the outside corner. Fast away. One and0. 6 nothing. Big four-run sixth inning would open it up for the Reds. The pitch way too high. Fast ball upstairs. Two balls. No strikes on Hill. Santon high set. Big breath. The pitch. Swing and a miss. Hill on a check swing right through it over the outside corner. Now two and one. He struck out looking. He’s flyed to center. how he’ll use his timeout. Let’s go to Twitter and we’ve got a question today from David Lidle. Hey Cowboy, with the All-Star game approaching, I’m curious to hear what your All-Star experience is like now. The two-1 pitch to Derek Hill way off the plate outside. Humbling, but awfully fun. And when you look back on it, very rewarding to be able to play in that All-Star gr All-Star game. Not everybody gets to do that. Now the 3-1 pitch and it’s inside the Hill ball four. So with the Reds leading largely now, they have walked the leadoff man each of the last two innings. This time it’s the number nine hitter Derek Hill. playing in that All-Star game is when you’ve never done it before. And and I I got I got to go in my second year in the big league and we had just played in the World Series the year before and here I am getting to to pitch in the All-Star game. Walking around that locker room and looking at all the names on the jerseys. That’s pretty cool, man. Won fouled back strike one on Xavier Edwards. I mean, there are a lot of guys in there that I’d watched play on TV when I was much younger. Was there anybody that that you were starruck around a little bit? Andre Dawson. Oh, really? Yeah, he was he was just a bonafide boss. The one pitch to Edwards way too high. You know, it’s it’s funny because Dawson had had hit me with a line drive just to the right of my cup in my quad about a week before the All-Star game. So, I had a bruise that looked like a football except it was black. Did you have him sign it? One bouncing ball foul. As we’re getting dressed to go out for the batting practice, I’m getting my pants off and I’m putting on my shorts and Sean Dunston looks over and he goes, “Oh man, is that where he hit you?” And I said, “Yeah.” He goes, “Hawk, Hawk, come here.” Cuz that’s what they called. Yeah. Dawson was Hawk. He goes, “Come here.” He goes, “You got to sign this.” And he hands him I swear. Hands him a gold pin. And I’m thinking to myself, you’re not signing my leg, bro. I love you, but it it was just it was funny. That is outstanding. That would have made for But it kind of But that kind of instance is what made you feel like you belong, you know, just to have that kind of interaction with guys that you’ve watched play for a long time. It was pretty cool. One, two, bouncing ball to first. Fielded on the bag by Steer. He throws to second and they get the double play. Steer stepping on first. Ellie applying the tag. Then down at second on Hill and for the second straight inning, the Reds get a big double play. You know, when you watch Steer make that play, it looks like a walk in the park. That is not an easy play because you’ve got to make the tag, you’ve got to throw over the shoulder of the runner, and you’ve got to get rid of the ball in a hurry. You don’t have time to think about it. But yet, Steer makes that play and he makes it look like it’s so easy. That’s the reason he is a great first baseman. It is just a piece of cake for Justine Ramirez takes down too low. When you talk about guys with a slow heartbeat, that’s kind of what you’re talking about cuz you never see him panic on a field ever. He’s confident. Just play the game. One and0. And Augustine Ramirez batting with the bases empty and two outs. And he watches a breaking ball in there for a strike call. And that doesn’t mean that just because you have a slow heart rate doesn’t mean that you’re not playing aggressively, you’re not playing hard, diving, all those things. It’s just that you don’t panic. And he doesn’t panic. One-1 swing ging a miss. Always under control. If he panicked, he wouldn’t be hitting 252 right now because the way the season started for him with the way his shoulder was that that’s a tough start and he has come back gang busters. Now the one two to Ramirez. Look at a soft bouncing ball toward the middle. Ellie moving far to his left. Gloves and throws from second right on target. Hit Augustine Ramirez. Nice job by Santion working around the leadoff walk in the eighth. Reds lead it six to nothing as we go to the bottom of the eighth inning on the Reds radio network. Rammy was born with an extremely rare. Let’s see if you can figure out the following baseball slang term. Today’s phrase is oppo taco. Do you know what it means? Oppo taco. Reds are up six to nothing. Rocher ready to go. And here’s his first pitch on the way to Hayes. It is in the dirt outside for ball one. And the count is one and0. Ball. No strikes on Hayes. One down and outside. Two balls. No strikes on Hayes. Nice to see Hayes get a couple of hits today. Pair of singles. Now he takes down and away. But the ball that he hit the hardest, he was out on. Right. line drive to center that Hill ran down. Has his three RBI’s in this ball game today. Go with those two singles and now he works a walk. Swung on. Popped up. Foul off the right side. Out of play. Reds will be in San Diego in the second half of the season. Mean a while. Here’s the one-two. Go swings. It’s a soft tapper by the mound. The shorts stop feels it. Scoops to second. It’s dropped. Hayes ran past second though and he’s going to get tagged out by the second baseman Edwards. Hayes went into second base. He’s just standing as you see a lot of players do now. Not as often as you used to because there are kind of rules that guard against it now. But the flip from the shorts stop the second baseman was dropped. Hayes kept running and he went right on by the bag. Edwards picked it up, just tagged him out. Marlins, they were only going to get one anyway, even if that was handled cleanly. And it wasn’t a bad flip. It was right into the middle of Edward right in his glove. Just went to grab it. Never had it. Now Spencer Seir and Steer takes a strike. Nothing one. Now Steer swings and fouls away. A breaking ball down. He’s behind the count and two. Reds are not going to be in San Diego until the second to last road trip of the year. That’ll be San Diego, West Sacramento, and St. Louis. Of course, will be in New York and DC coming out of the All-Star break. The O2 in the dirt outside. Reds actually have two big West Coast trips coming up after the All-Star break. They’ll have the one at the end of August where they go to Anaheim, Arizona, and LA. And then we’re going to Phoenix when it’s August. Yeah, that would be nice. It’ll probably open the roof up. That’s the perfect time. Basketball too high. 140 degrees. That’ll be great at midnight. Highways will be melting. Here comes set. Here comes the two- two pitch to Steer. Flung on. Fouled back. That’ll be nice. Yeah, it will be good. Yeah. Wait, San Diego will be nice in September. San Diego will be beautiful. But I can tell you this, Sacramento will be smoking. September. That part of the world, I have no idea what the weather’s ever going to. Steer lifts a fly ball center field. Eric Hill right tracks to make the catch in shallow right center field. Connor Joe’s back to first. Sacramento is not cool like San Francisco. No, I can tell you that right now. It’s hot. Short port ball will be flying everywhere. Perfect. Means long games, a lot of runs. Jose Trevinho takes a strike over the outside corner at the knees. The count is 0 and one. So, you’re saying pitchers are probably backing it up right now to figure out if they’re scheduled in line to pitch. Don’t you know it? And it’s a strike at the knee. Fast ball. The count is 0 and two on Trovinho. First, two outs. I wonder when they’re going to get the All-Star game. Joe off the bag at first base. O’Shea ready. He deal the 02 pitch too far outside. One ball and two strikes. Joe short leaded first. Here’s the one-two and there’s a bullet right back up the middle and into center field for a hit. Rinho aboard with a two out single. That was a cap spinner. That ball was right back at the forehead of Calvin Foscher. Chuck and duck. And that’s exactly what Foscher did. Look out. He started to stick his bare hand up there in self-defense and then he just decided he was going to bail all together out of the way. Good idea. That was a rocket. Who would have ever thought that Major League Baseball during the regular season would have not one team but two teams playing in a minor league ballpark. Little odd, isn’t it? You’re listening to the Cincinnati Children’s postgame show. The Reds knock off the Marlins tonight. Shut them out by a final score of 6 nothing. Let’s get final thoughts on this game from the two guys who called it Tommy Throwin. Jeff Brandon, thanks. Well, Cowboy great win for the Reds today. This is back-to-back wins and back-to-back wins where they swung the bats pretty well. Obviously, the home run from Spencer Steer is nice, but I I kind of look at the offense where they didn’t score the home runs, pieced some hits together, strung together uh some offense. Really good to see this team swinging the bats the way they’re capable of, and they’ve done it now the last two days. Yeah, a couple of runs early in the ball game, I thought really allowed Leo to settle down. There were some uh there was some fight in the Marlins early in this ball game, but once the Reds got to that sixth inning and they started really stringing some hits together, uh it just put the silent treatment on the Marlins offense. Nick Ledo, I thought, did a nice job to recover. Like you said, there were some traffic early, some long innings, but then he kind of settled down a little bit and battled through it. Yeah, the the last three innings he was out there, it was almost no contest and you could just see the the relaxation, just executing pitches time after time. It it seemed like he made some adjustments very similar to what we saw with Andrew Abbott yesterday as the game went on, reading hitters after that first couple of times through the lineup and continuing to make pitches. uh couple of big ball games by some left-handed pitchers uh for the Reds, both Andrew Abbott and Nick Lollo. And the Reds needed those two wins. Well, they did. And I think that’s the thing you look at because you end up dropping three out of four to this Marlins team. You don’t feel real good about yourself going into this Rockies series. And this was a home stand where a lot of people, I think, thought the Reds had a chance to pile up some wins. Yeah, I I think everybody came in, but the Marlins were playing great baseball coming in here. It was going to be no easy task. Uh but the Reds were able to rebound the last couple of games of this series. They played awfully well last night. They played very well here today and hopefully they can take that momentum into the Rockies series and really use that to springboard them into the All-Star break. Red six nothing winners over the Marlins today. Yet back. All right. Thank you, Tommy. When we return, we’ll take a look at scores around Major League Baseball. Back at Great American Ballpark where the Reds knock off the Marlins tonight. Final score 6 nothing. You’re listening to the Cincinnati Children’s postgame show. Now to the highlights. For the 30th time this season, the Reds scored in the first inning. Miami starter Caluant Trill struck out the first two batters he faced, but Ellie de la Cruz singled to center field. It was hit number 100 of the season for Da Cruz and that brought Austin Hayes to the plate. Two pitch and Hayes lines it into left center field. That’s a hit. Here comes Ellie charging around third. Here comes Derek Hill’s throw to the plate. Cut off. The throw goes to second and out of second is Hayes. But the Reds will get the run. It’s one to nothing. Red scored again in the bottom of the second and it happened when Spencer Steer stepped to the plate with one out. Plate pitch. Steer swing. He drives it high, very deep and very gone to left way out of here. And no doubter for Steer. His 11th home run of the year. Two nothing Red. Fast ball up and in on the first pitch. Boxville came back in there. This time he left it down and he got hurt. Nick Lollo made the start tonight for Cincinnati. He couldn’t have started much better. He gave up a hit in the second, another in the third, and an infield single in the fifth. But not one of those base runners reached second base. He then pitched a one, two, three, sixth inning, and his night was over. Six innings pitched, three hits, no runs, no walks, four strikeouts, 91 pitches, 59 of those for strikes. He was really good tonight. The Reds scored again in the bottom of the six and Chase Quentrell from the game. Novie Marte began the inning by singling the right. He moved to third on the TJ Fredel base hit. Matt Mlan then walked the load to bases that brought Ellie de la Cruz back to the plate. Now the payoff pitch to de la Cruz. Swung on and line through the right side. That brought Austin Hayes back to the plate and he delivered our play of the game. Swung on. That’s grounded through the left side. A little bleeder right between short and third. One runs home. Here comes Ellie. Here comes the throw to the plate. Not in time. It hits off the catcher. Forz rolls in front of him and Hayes goes to second. be listening to our flagship station tomorrow morning at 6:50 a.m. If you correctly identify the play of the game, you’ll receive two Reds tickets. Graham Ashcraft replaced Lollo in the top of the seventh. He walked the first batter he faced. Then he gave up a base hit to Connor Norby. Jesus Sanchez was next to the plate and Ashcraft got some big time help from his right fielder. Here’s a looping fly ball right center. Long run and what a catch by Will Benson. A sliding snag at the shoe top level and he comes up with it. That is a big time play. One down. Ashcraft then walked Kyle Sters but Liam Hicks grounded into a inning ending double play. Tony Santion came on. He pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Scott Barlo came on to pitch the top of the ninth. He walked Otto Lopez but struck out the next two batters. That was it for Barlo. Let’s head down to the Reds Clubhouse now and hear from Nicolola. No, it’s good. Just a little little maintenance. little maintenance out there. But, uh, no, it was good. Um, yeah, I mean, it happened in the first inning. Um, but, you know, I was good. Uh, good to go. So, it wasn’t the first time it’s happened this year. So, uh, close. Um, you know, there was definitely some things I actually didn’t think my change up today was as good as it’s been. U, but I was able to spin the ball and I was able to elevate it pretty well. Um, so, and I think the main thing was I fell behind. Uh, a couple guys with some guys on but able to get back in the count um and get some outs. So, it was good. Yeah, for sure. Um, you know, it was we knew coming in it was a big home stand. Um, not definitely not the way we wanted to start the first two games. U, but, uh, good response. Um, you know, offense yesterday got going early. Um, and Abbott did his thing. Um, you know, and just tried to go out there today and and give us another another, uh, chance at it like that. And, uh, like I said, the boys swung it well today. Um, we played great great defense all around. So, you know, uh, take that into tomorrow. Yeah, I think it’s more of um you know, we don’t you can’t put as much as you want to obviously win every day, you can’t put too much stock into into one day, you know, uh we know that we got to show up the next day and be and ready to go again. Um you know, vice versa, like today, you know, we win. Uh tomorrow’s a new day, we got to win again. Um so I think it’s not getting too high, not getting too low. It’s just, you know, coming in every day and just ready to play a game. That is Nick Lollo on in his postgame press conference talking about tonight’s win over the Miami Marlins. They leave town now. Tomorrow the Colorado Rockies are in town for three games. Chase Burns makes a start in game one. He’s 0 and1 with an 810 ERA. Herman Marquez will pitch for Colorado. He is 3 and 10. His erra 5.84.
