MLB LIVE🔴 San Diego Padres vs Arizona Diamondbacks – Jul 10, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

All right, just about ready for baseball. Today’s starting pitcher, you Darvish. Chris, his strikeout rate this year among the best all time. He’s truly one of the elite strikeout pitchers in the league. I mean, strikeouts per nine off the charts. So, the opposing team, they know they have their work cut out for him anytime they’re facing this guy or a guy like this that’s going to get the swings and misses. pretty much in a class of his own when it comes to that category. Corbin Carroll, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. Come on. Here comes the pitch. Foul ball there. That misses the zone and it’s two and one. Knocks that one away and will do it again. Darvish kicks, delivers, and that’s downed away. Foul ball and it remains a full count. Swings through that and it’s a strike out. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strike out. You can’t be mad at yourself after an attack like that one. Well, getting a good look at the pitcher here in the first inning isn’t a bad thing. I know he struck out, but you can live with that as long as the other hitters in this lineup can learn something from it. An outstanding hitter in Catel Marte and he swings and misses at the initial offering. Marte 31 years old and he was born in the Dominican Republic. Darbish delivers and ball one. One out. Base is empty. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. try to go again with the fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And there’s a ball. These first two hitters really making it work out there. Already 14 pitches this inning. Two down. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Foul ball. Another two- two upcoming. This one in the air right field. Tatis snags it for the second out. Now the Diamondbacks lineup as put together by Tory Lavell. This is a veteranled lineup right here. A lot of players with plenty of experience. Singy. Yeah, no doubt about that. Boog. These players have been around the game for a long time and they may not have the flash that they once did, but they’ve got the wisdom to be able to understand different situations, be able to think with the opponent and sometimes in front of the opponent and you always seem to see a team like this. They come to the ballpark. They know how to get down to business and they understand what the job is at hand. Two outs and that’s through there for a strike and the count is 0 and2 quickly in an 02 hole. You’re going to have to give something up here in terms of power if you want to put the ball in play with any authority. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Next off down low and in the dirt. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you get hurt. In the dirt. Two balls, two strikes. Full count. And they’ll do it again. That one the other way and foul ball. 3-2. Gets a piece and stays alive. Oh, he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit. try to move it around. Create just a little bit of illusion at the end. Swing and a miss. A strike out for Udarish. Nothing doing for Arizona. And now the Padres’s get their first opportunity in a scoreless ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show back here at Petco Park. And today’s starter Mel Kelly and Singi. We were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure, he’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. Most guys get a little tight, they start to aim the baseball, but for some reason he gets looser, the ball comes out of his hand with more life, and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. Fernando Tatiz Jr. leading things off and takes a strike outside low. One and one. Slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats. So glad these ballparks have installed the netting to protect the fans, keep things safer all around the league. Fouls it back with two strikes. Got him looking for the K. Went back to the cutter and it was worthwhile. Well, they locked him up with the cutter on the outside right there. And I got to think he was looking middle in because he just couldn’t pull the trigger. And you know with two strikes, fast ball coming in, you got to be ready to swing it. That time it cut to the outside part of the plate and he just couldn’t pull the trigger. Luis Arise stands in. Swanging a highf fly ball pulled foul and that’s out of play. That one to first. Handles, throws to first. And two quick outs in the bottom of the first here tonight as we take a look at the Padres’s lineup. And it’s clear the most important job they have today is getting to the starting pitcher early and often. No doubt about that. That’s the best way to disrupt a game. But can they do it? Certainly something for us to pay attention to in this one, partner. Two outs, space is empty. Here’s Manny Machado. Another solid power season. Highf fly ball out towards left field. That one back there. And it’s off the wall. But foul. Manny. Yeah, strike. Oh, this guy’s so comfortable hitting with two strikes. Even a good pitch early in the at bat, if he’s not ready to pull the trigger, he’s not worried if he gets to an 02 count. Just outside now. One and two. Two out. Base is empty. Good job to fight that one off. Swang and a highf fly ball left field. Pretty well struck. That one is back. That’s not coming back. His second homer of this series. It’s one- nothing with this pitcher’s velocity. A change up is really a break for a hitter. He got a BP fast, didn’t move a whole lot, and he absolutely tattooed it. Here’s Gavin Sheets now. Left hand bat and that one fouled off. The change up missing and now it’s even one and one and that drops in for a strike. That one missed. I’ve gotten to call some incredible NLDS games here at Petco Park between the Padres’s and their fierce rivals, the LA Dodgers. NLDS game four here in 22 when the Padres’s knocked off LA and then game four in 2024 when the Dodgers started their comeback and eventual run to the World Series. One of the great fan environments in baseball. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. The two-2 in the air right field. Fair ball. Now he’ll turn for second. The throw in. Throw pulls him off the bag and he’s saved. Showed a lot of fight with two strikes in that AB. hooked around that pitch on the outside, but he was still able to square it up pretty nicely. And that takes quick, strong wrist to pull that off. Jackson Merrill will hit next. And he pumps in a strike. 01. Dellio one hard hit down the line and left and it gets by him rounds third headed for the plate. He’ll score easily and he’ll make it to second base with two gone. Stringing them together. That’s three hits in a row. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the ball straight to it. That’s great work right there. So runner at second, two down. Now Xander Bogarts gets a chance to hit right through there for a strike. Well, lots of pitches thrown in this first inning. It’s kind of that nightmare scenario for starting pitching. But you know what? It’s still early enough. He can settle in. He can get some length if he just cleans up his mechanics a little bit and he can’t come up with it. Gets off a throw. They limit the damage here, but two runs for him and they jump ahead. We’ll move to the second now at Petco Park. It’s the Padres’s two and the Diamondbacks nothing back here in San Diego. Second inning set to go. Now here’s the cleanup hitter for Arizona. Josh Naylor. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot that misses the zone and it’s a ball in a strike. Joe McDonald doing the home play duties here. Well, Joe is an interesting one. I’m always trying to figure out what exactly his zone is. Feels like it kind of moves around from game to game, sometimes inning to inning. No, there’s a ball. Yeah, I think that’s fair. I don’t think he’s ever way off with his balls and strikes, but yeah, I don’t think it’s easy to define what his zone is. Like you said, swings through that one for strike two. Chopped back up the middle on to first. One up, one down. That is the third base, Aueno. Auo Suarez up to hit now. to third. Machado tosses to first. Two up, two down in the top of the second. Batting six, the left fielder, Lordis. Two down, base is empty. Here’s the left fielder, Lordis Goreel Jr., He’s got pop, which is a little sneaky because he’s so comfortable with taking his base hits to the opposite field, but he can jump you if you make a mistake. Fast ball for a strike at 95. Looks like a really good fast ball today. You can hear that catcher mitt popping. Looking forward to hearing a lot of that one in this one. Hot shot to first base and he snags it to end the inning. And the Diamondbacks down in order. And they’re down two nothing. Ready to go for the last half of the now. It’s the second base. Jake Cronin work. Kelly back to work. Ripped to short. high throw to first and he can’t reach it. No advance though. Ball didn’t get too far away. Just kind of sailed that throw and pulled it across his body towards the right field side of first base. And usually that means the fielder just didn’t square up his shoulders to the target. And I think that throw had just as much to do with his footwork as anything else. Now it’s the rookie first baseman Trenton Brooks. That one missing inside. 10. Kelly moved to first. Croninworth dives back in. In the air to left center. McCarthy trying to get there. He’s got it. And there’s one down. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He’s saved extra bases for sure. The pitcher’s his friend. He’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Here’s Elias Diaz. That’s in for a strike. Good approach right there. You want to get something just a little higher that you can elevate. Stay out of that double play. Now move to first. Croninworth dives back in. Man at first. One away. late that time, but it’s strike two. Center field. McCarthy hauls it in and there’s two away. Now batting right fielder Ben Fernando Tatis Fernando Tatis Jr. to hit here. Struck out looking in the bottom of the first right through there for a strike. Croninworth off of first with two away. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. That ends the frame. One error in the inning, but nothing more. We played two full. It’s the Padres’s two and the Diamondbacks nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now here is Jake McCarthy. McCarthy in the air left field down the line and it’s fouled. Swinging a drive deep right field. Back there and out of here. A monster shot to right and they’re on the scoreboard. It’s 2-1. Well, there goes the shut out just like that. They’re still behind, but this is a start. He’s so good at getting his arms extended and that’s exactly what he did right there. You don’t typically want to pull a pitch in that part of the plate, but he doesn’t allow his wrist to roll over. stays through the ball, gets the loft, and gets the home run. Randall Gretchic now swinging a miss at a slider. Always exciting to see a leadoff home run in an inning. Kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. And that drops in for a strike. Two pretty nasty sliders to get this hitter in an 02 count. You’re up there at the plate. You got to look up in the zone and spit on anything that’s down. And now one and two. And that one is inside. Well, clearly not too happy with the call there. Thought he caught the top of the zone and you could pretty much read his lips saying that’s not up. That’s to third and that’s a fair ball. Makes the turn and heads for second and that’s a double. Man, he just absolutely turned on that one. Ripped it down the line. Nice job of staying in his mechanics. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Here’s the catcher, Jose Herrera. In there at the knees. Strike one. Lifted in the air down the left side. Machado and there’s one away. The batter number seven, this is Corbin Carol struck out swinging his first time. Strike on the inside corner. One out and a runner at second. to the right side. Croninworth throws to first in time. The batter number four, second baseman, Catel, Catel Marte up to the plate, flyed to right, his first time. That clips the corner. That was just paint on the first pitch fast ball right through there for a strike. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. Two outs. Way higher than that one. Yeah, the count one and two. I don’t like to say he wasted a pitch. I think that was a purpose pitch. Change the eye level. Have him look up. Now go back exactly where you want to go. Runner at third. Two away. Oh, and he hit him. He had him one, two, and he ends up hitting him with a pitch. Stepping in as the switching shorts stop, Peralo. He was a strikeout victim his first time. My drive. That’s a base hit. In from third is the tying run. gets it done to drive in the run and tie it back up. Comes a thing of beauty. He may have been a little behind the pitch, but by getting that barrel into the hitting zone early on in his swing, he was able to meet it and still shoot a line drive down the line and left. Here’s Josh Naylor grounded out back to the pitcher his first time. And that one missing low. One ball, no strike. The one check swing called strike. Ball game is still tied. They can get out of this inning with a tie game and a count one and two. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. really think the outer half is open. Two on, two outs. Way inside. Gets out of the way. Tied up here in the early going. That would close. Rule the ball and it’s three and two. Caught a break right there. Pretty good pitch on the outside corner. foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch and that’ll load the bases. Oh, that sets up a really big at bat in this game. These are the moments when everyone in the stadium gets really locked in. Au Heno Suarez up to the plate now. 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at bat. Swing and a miss. And it’s 0 and one. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. Swing and a miss as he was late. I think he was sitting off speed there. Next offering is outside. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. All loaded up. Dangerous hitter at the plate. fights that one away. Still one and two. Just missed. If he’s able to connect on that, look out. Right side. Cronin work in plenty of time. The first that ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. They get two and draw even again. We move on to the bottom of inning number three. We are tied 2-2 as we go to the last of the third. And now the DH Luis Sas and takes low for ball one. Next offering is foulback. Next pitch downstairs and it’s two and one. Just missed. on the ground out to short. Peromo on to first. Leadoff man retired here in the third. Third baseman Manny Machado. Now Machado up here. He’s already homered here in this one. And ball one. That one finds the zone. And that’s strike one. The one-1 is fouled off. cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Well, that’s always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count. And as a pitcher, it really allows you to start expanding the zone. Hitters become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide. And what happens is because of the pressure, you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is. And that’s what leads to the strikeout. She stands in here, leaves that one off the inside. Robert to right field way back. Gone. He’ll circle the bases. his 14th of the year and the Padres’s take the lead. It’s 3-2. He absolutely crushed that one. No doubt about that one, B. We knew it wasn’t coming back. Just an excellent swing all the way around and it had that sound coming off the back that gets everyone’s attention. Got a pitch to drive short to the baseball, squared it up, and the backspin carried it out of here. Two outs, nobody on. Jackson Merrill, the next up for the Padres’s. Pitch misses there and it’s one and0. Two down, base is empty, but one run across here in the last half of the third. and downstairs. Looks like he’s being a little cautious with him in this at bat after doubling the first time up. Doesn’t want to make another mistake. And another ball. A rare three ball count here. He’s been throwing strikes all day. Got to be ready to hit if you’re in the box. That’s a walk. Went for the cutter again, but couldn’t find his own. It’s been a little bit of a shaky inning, but he’s still in a good spot to get out of this thing without giving up any more runs. He’s just got to turn the page and go after this next guy. Bogarts takes low. Second trip to the plate in this one. The two out walk. got to erase that and really go to work on the hitter. You got to go ahead and just let him steal if he’s going to try to create the swing and miss and get out of this jam. Next offering upstairs and you wonder is he in his head a little bit even if the base runner doesn’t steal right here. What’s great is that he is dividing the attention of the pitcher and may serve to give his teammate a better pitch to hit at the plate. Merryill leads off first with two down to the inning. That one fouled off. Two and two. H. So now two on. And two outs. So close to getting out of it right there. But this inning still has life. Number nine. First and second, two outs. Now here’s Jake Croninberg. He’s 0 for one. Popped up to the left into foul ground. He makes the grab and that will end the inning. The Padres’s get one in the inning with a solo blast. It’s now a 32 ball game. And we’re back all set for the start of the unit. And it’s Lordis Goreel Jr. Well, these Diamondbacks showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. They’re doing a good job of working the pitch count and they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well. Golden two now. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. Still relatively early, but with a pair of runs already on the board, the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set them up to do more damage later in this game. Popped in the air left field. Cheeks hauls it in and there’s one away. Up next for the Diamondbacks, the center fielder Jake. Now up next for Arizona, Jake McCarthy. He’s already homered in this game. Well, here’s an interesting stat on Darvish. He has more than a 100 wins in his Big League career. The only Japanese-born pitcher with more wins is Hideon Nommo, my former teammate. The Dbacks down by a run. Top half of inning number four. Outside and it’s two and one. And there’s the strike on the outside corner. Wow. Just a beautiful back door slider right there. If you got any chance of hitting that pitch, you’d have to wait until the absolutely last millisecond. Just a tough pitch to hit. And not an easy one to throw either. Ripped right field. That’s back there. That one way back and it’s gone. Another homer. He’s done it again. His second homer of the game. And we are starting over. It’s 33. Those are the at bats that leave pitchers exhausted. He had to throw a lot of pitches and still gave up the long ball. That’s a bad combo. Knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Randall Gritic. First pitch misses. One down. Base is empty. That misses the zone. And that’s ball two. Darish maybe a little less aggressive on the mound right now after that home run, Chris. Yeah, it seems that way. You know, guys, they can come out, feel good, but then all of a sudden get touched up a little bit and they start trying to throw instead of pitch. They’re not trusting their stuff. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. Well, he’s been good for the most part. Is it going to take someone going out to the mound to maybe refocus him a bit? Well, partner, every pitcher’s a little different. I I liken it to you. Sometimes you come in and you’re not as focused and I kind of do what it takes to get you on track and then you have a great show. Uh so perhaps it’s the same with him. Nobody really wants their rhythm broken off, but sometimes they need a little pickme up. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. And there’s ball four. It wasn’t easy, but he earned that walk after a long at bat. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. Go ahead run on base. Jose Herrera stands in now for the Diamondbacks. First pitch just misses. Bullpen action for the Padres’s. Ryan Hoeying, the young right-hander up and throwing. Matsui getting cranked up as well. That’s outside and the count is 2 and 0. Last two pitches have been down in the zone. pitcher clearly trying to get that ground ball double play, but in this count, he’s going to have to give in, elevate his pitches, and get back into this at bat. Swing and a miss. Now, two balls in a strike. Ball three. the other way. He makes the catch and there’s two down. They couldn’t have asked for a better out. Makes a great play on the line drive and they keep the runner at first. Just like that, they’re almost out of the inning. Corbin Carroll stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Carol 24 years old. He’s usually in right field, but today he’s getting the DH treatment that catches the zone for a strike. 0 and one. Well, a nice day off for him. Not having to jog out to the outfield. Gets to be in the DH spot. Be curious to see how he keeps himself in a rhythm, not playing defense. And that one misses up and in. And one and one. in the dirt. Two balls, one strike. Gritic off of first with two away. This one chopped on the ground but foul. Two outs and that one is lifted in the air. Merryill sizing this one up and that’ll do it. One in the inning and it comes from a rather unlikely power source. We’re tied now at three a piece. Back after this on the show. Bottom of the fourth. So digging in now for San Diego. Brooks, Brooks and a foul ball. You know, these Padres’s doing a good job of simply getting the bat on the ball in this game and the numbers back that up. And here’s a stat for you, Boo. They’re making contact with more than 85% of the pitches that they’re swinging at. It’s pretty special stuff. Not so good if you’re out there on the mouth. And that’s off the inside edge now. One and two. And that’s outside. just off the inside edge. Got him swinging. He’s notched four strikeouts now. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly he had him full. Diaz. And now it’s Elias Diaz. Fly to center. His first time. He’s 0 for one. And that one pulled foul. All tied up. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. That one not close and it’s one and one. Next offering is fouled back. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Oh, nothing too fancy on the strikeout pitch right there. Just a low 90s fast ball. And I’m not sure he was trying to challenge him, but that’s pretty much what happened. Veryable location. They found a way to just get it by him. Back to the top of the lineup. Fernando Tatiz Jr. the next up for the Padres’s. And the first pitch misses for ball one. This is important. If he can go one, two, three here will be a very positive sign for him and for his team. Swing and a miss. Strike one. One ball, one strike. missed with a change up and a count to an other way and he beats the shift and it finds its way through for a hit and that keeps the inning alive. Nice. Next is the designated hitter. Luis Az has grounded out a couple of times. Tatis runs strike in there. Throw to second out. And that’ll end the inning. Well, trying to get in the scoring position, but a great catch and throw to end the inning. That’s the way to pick up the pitcher. Now, we’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Ryan Hoing still pretty early in the ball game, so this bullpin has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs, kind of bridge the gap that starter left for the diamond back. Here’s Marte. Patel Marte just missed. Ball two 0 to count. Next pitch inside. Three balls, no strikes. So definitely a little wild right out of the gate. Well, it could be a little tough coming from the bullpin mound to this mound, but you’ve got to find a way to get ahead in the count quickly. He hasn’t. We’ll see how this at bat turns out. On the ground to first. Has some trouble with it. Now he gets it to the pitcher covering the bag. And they come away with an out after a tricky start to the play. This is what it’s all about on that right side of the diamond when you’ve got the first baseman involved and the pitcher as well. First baseman does a great job. Knocks the ball down, gets away from a little bit, doesn’t panic. The pitcher’s exactly where he’s supposed to be. Nice feed and a nice play for the out. Next to hit for Arizona, Heraldo Purdomo. Find the zone. One down. Base is empty. That’s down and in. 2-1. right through there for a strike. Well, that’s really the money spot down and away. If you can locate that consistently, it’s going to be real tough for hitters to square that off. That’s what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen. The two- two on the way. Swings and misses and the first two set down in the top of the field. That’s about as nasty of a splitter as you’ll come across, especially in terms of movement. I mean, that thing tumbles out of his hand and just drops off the table at the last moment. He keeps it down. It’s just so tough to put wood on. And now it’s Josh Naylor. And it’s fouled away. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the fifth. And that’s in for a strike. Swing and a chopper out to short on the run. Sends it over to first and that’s a nice play to end the inning. So one, two, three go to Diamondbacks. Score remains tied at three. Bottom of the inning. Now the DH for the Padres. Lis Kelly back to work and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. up the middle. Purdomo, slings to first and the lead off hitter retired in the fifth. Good sinker low in the zone right there and produced exactly what he was looking for. Ball on the ground. Nice ground out. Here’s Manny Machado now. Singi, he’s a guy that covers both sides of the plate about as well as anyone in the sport. How difficult is that to do? Well, just look at the back of my bubble gum card. You’ll see how hard it is. These guys are great, man. They have the ability to look out there, but also to be able to turn on the inside pitch. Those that can really sharpen things on the outer half, those are the ones that become elite. Bases empty, one away. Last half of inning number five. Ground ball right side and that’s just foul. Not close with that one. And that’s ball one. And Machado able to spoil that pitch. Foul ball still a one and two count. Five foul balls in this at bat so far and these two are going headto head. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to get into it a little bit more and more each pitch even though there hasn’t been a ball in play yet. And that one is downstairs. Counts full. Three and two on the ground to the left and it stays fair. Around first and hustling for second in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. Well, here we are. Third time through the order and this is where we see the OPS jump up. manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Mel Kelly won’t go any further tonight and it’s going to be a start that he’d like to get a redo on. Not his best. Back with a new arm in a minute. Now pitching. So out of the pen for the Diamondbacks, Jaylen Beat and he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. So the go-ahead run in scoring position. Next up is the cleanup spot for the Padres’s. Gavin Sheets. First pitch misses. One ball, no strike. Machado, the runner at second with one away. Right side hard hit. Slings to first in time. Well, there’s a lot riding on that at bat right there. Nice job of the pitcher to bear down, make the pitch, get the ground ball. Excellent piece of work. And now Jackson Merrill. You know, this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher. What you tell yourself is, I want to stay square to the plate, try to hit the ball over the shorts stop’s head in there at the knees for a strike. The Diamondbacks with some movement in the pen. Jake Woodford, the right-handed sinker baller. He looks to be readying himself. Number 43 warming up as well. Two outs. He caught it behind his back. The throw. What a play to end the inning. What a play to end the inning. There’s no way he saw that into the glove. No, you’re absolutely right. All he knew was the grounder was somewhere behind him. Just threw his glove out there and it stalked. That was pretty cool. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six. Here’s the third baseman, AU Heno Suarez. Closed, but called a ball. Ball one. You know, these Dbacks putting together some really good at bats in this game. There’s been a lot to like with how they’re approaching their chances at the plate. They really made that opposing starter work in this one. ran his pitch count up and now they’ve got an opportunity to continue making things difficult on the bullpen. That one misses. Now two and 0. And no, they haven’t broken through in a big way in the runs column, but with the way they’re grinding out at bats, it definitely feels like there’s potential for more coming. Two balls, one strike. There’s a certain point where you have to commit to what you think you see and he guessed wrong right there. Nasty slider with just terrific bite at the end inside and the count is filled up. Lifted in the air left field pretty well struck. Merrill sizes this one up. makes the catch for the out. Up next to the Diamond, the left. Here’s Guriel for two in this one. Guriel gets a piece. slapped foul. All tied up and we’re the top half of the sixth. And one and two. That one missed. And now the count is full. And another power hitter lurking in the on deck circle. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. One down. Base is empty. fouled off and they’ll do it again. Stays alive. Ninth pitch of the at bat due next. Foul ball and it remains a full count. lined into right. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. Two-way now. Now that this centeriel digging in, it’s the speedy outfielder Jake McCarthy. And the way he’s going in this one, we’ve been waiting for his spot to come around again. All right, listen everyone. Stop what you’re doing right now. This guy’s got two home runs already. Now he’s going for number three. There’s the strike. Top of the zone for a called strike. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. Yeah, that skips into D. Fouls it off. Still one and two. That’s inside. Fast ball is outside. Headed towards the corner and that’s a foul ball. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. Swinging a foul ball at the plate. They’ll do it again. Two down. Dolman knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Three and two. to the pitch is outside and ball four. That’s a great at bat. He saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk. Go ahead. Run on base. Randall Gritic the next to hit. This might be a steel situation, but that’s not your average catcher behind the dish. You have to be careful here. Right through there for a strike. That split is a pretty nasty pitch. Explodes out of the hand. Looks like a fast ball. on the bottom just falls out of it. Swang and a miss as he was out front that time. He finds himself in a tough situation early. Just going to try to simplify it. Take a knock the other way if you can. That missed by a lot. And that is ball one. And a breaking ball misses outside. And it remains two and two. Oh, great stop. Fires to first and they get the out. No runs on no hits, no errors and one left on. 678 do in the bottom of the sixth. All tied up at three apiece. Back here in San Diego, John Shabi with Chris Singleton in the booth. And leading off the bottom of the sixth, Xander Bogarts. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Activity in the Arizona bullpen. John Curtis getting ready to go. Diffani getting loose as well. That one fouled off. That one ripped right center field. Gritic on the run and it hops over the wall for an automatic double. Well, there’s something really nice about getting yourself an automatic double like that. You get to stroll into second base without having to worry about a throw or getting your uniform dirty. And now you’re just looking for the next hitter to kind of do the same thing. Maybe put one in the gap so you can jog home as well. Now at the plate, Jake Cronin work. And the first pitch misses for ball one. lifted in the air right center field and it drops in. There comes the throw. It’s offline and he scores. It’s 43. Big swing of the bat right there to give him the lead. That was clutch. When you flare a ball out behind second base, it’s really a tough spot for anyone to get to. And you’re never trying to do that as a hitter, but when you do, I tell you what, you’re yelling at it the entire way to get down. No outs. Runner at first. Trenton Brooks the next up for the Padres’s. Laser could be trouble. Colemanworth around second headed for third. Headed for the plate. Save. And they lead by two. That’s now three hits in a row for the offense. Just a cookie down the middle. I mean, those are the ones you dream about. Ones in the cage you’re just hoping you get in the ball game. Right down the middle. Not a whole lot of velocity. Right on top of it. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Diaz now at the plate. That one finds the corner going. misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out here in the bottom of the six. Next offering misses and it’s two and one. He’s getting a little frustrated out there on the mound getting hit around a little bit. Let’s see if he can settle himself down. That one catches the zone. It’s two and two. Two balls, two strikes. Fights it off. He’ll see another. Brooks leads off second with nobody out. And a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. Just a mid90s challenge fast ball right there. Not much to it. I’m sure he love another swing at it because it was in a very hitable location. Those are the swings where you can sometimes start to question yourself as a hitter and say, “How’d I miss that?” But you know it happens. So man aboard, one down and it’s Tatis at the plate. inside. Just missed. One, swings and misses. And it’s one and two. Two strikes. Still only one out here in the inning. And delivers outside. Still two and two after the foul ball. Man at second. That one inside. And now it’s filled up. Three and two. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Eighth pitch of the bat coming up now. A pop up on the infield. Suarez on the move. They got it for out number two. The designated hitter number four, Luis Arazz. Next for the Padres’s, Luis Arise. 0 for three with three ground outs. Sends it to first. And that’ll keep more runs from coming in. Inning over. They get two runs on three hits. No errors and one left. Seventh inning coming up. It’s the Padres’s five and the Diamondbacks three. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mahome. And if you dig into his walk rate, his numbers are really impressive. He’s really filled up the strike zone this season. So these batters better be ready to swing the bats. ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. So now back to the top of the order. The batter number seven, designated hitter. Now Corbin Carroll for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. Splits the plate. That’s strike one. Now, this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. And here’s a slow roller. And a foul ball. with the tying run at the plate here in the top half of inning number seven. And a foul ball. He stays alive. checks his swing. Now it’ll appeal to third. No swing. Just held it back there. Tying run at the plate. Tried to check his swing. Appeal to third. Yes, he did. Down he goes on. Strikes. So digging in, Catel Marte. Definitely wants to stay out of the double play here. Ball on the ground in the infield. Should be an inning ending double play. That one the other way. And there’s a base hit. They fired in quickly. So it’s first and second with only one away. Well, that was an important bat. this game. So, a great job there stepping up to the challenge. They actually kind of fooled him with the breaking ball on the inside part of the plate there. Didn’t get a good piece of it, but he got just enough to fight it off and make it work out. Now a huge atbat in this game coming up. Perdom strike one. That was the pitch to hit. Forcing fast ball instead of that sinker ball that makes you hit it on the ground. He missed a good one. Here over at second. Marte over at first. So one away. A short stop. Takes the ball and a count one and two. swams and miss and struck him out. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Josh Naylor. This is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation. Yeah, Poo, not sure what the numbers say, but clearly an at bat that could change the course of this game dramatically. And that one fouled off. in the air left field down the line. Squeezes it and that’s the third out. Diamond back stranded a pair. Still a two-run deficit. It’s 5-3. Now, we’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Number 43. pretty tight game. So, they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Here’s Machado. If you don’t get ahead in the count, you can forget about having any success against him. Machado, that one almost got him. Straighten him up a little bit. That one called a strike and the count is one and one. Late on that fast ball. One, two. off the plate inside. Now two and two and that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. That one inside ball three. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch. Let’s go. Swing at a highf fly ball that’s out to center. McCarthy makes the catch and there’s one gone. The left fielder number 30 G stepping in for San Diego. Gavin Sheets. And that’s fouled off. Base is empty. One away here in the bottom of the seventh. Swing and a pop off in foul ground. Catcher tosses the mask, settles under it, brings it in. Two down. The center fielder number three, Jackson Merrill. Jackson Merrill the next up for the Padres’s. And that drops in for a strike. Two outs. Bows that off to the left. And we’ll do it again. swing and a pop off in foul ground. Makes the catch and over. Three up, three down for San Diego and it remains 53 now pitching. Welcome back. in a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Jason Adam, he has a great slider with tons of movement. Now the third base, Aueno Suarez, 0 for three in this one misses outside. one and 0. And that’s outside. He’s clearly trying to work him away here. Both pitches off the plate. If you really want to put the ball in play, you’re going to have to stay back and drive it to the opposite field. Two and0 to Cal. Here it comes. And another ball. Rio and that’s ball four. And that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hit didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. Here’s Lordis Guriel Jr. There’s the strike ball with the tying run at the plate and we’re in the top of the eighth. Next pitch is outside. That was the sweeper, but it missed. Last couple of pitches, breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. Almost got him on this count. Runner not known for his speed, but I think you got to put him in motion. Try to avoid a double play here, boo. The tying run at the plate that clips the inside corner for a strike. That’s good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and in just on the edge and that’s one of those if you swing at it. He had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Tying run at the plate. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. And he couldn’t hold back. He’s run up on strikes. Jake McCarthy stands in now for the Diamondbacks. McCarthy first pitch just misses. Always tough to turn two on a speedster like this. It’s even harder with him coming out of the left-handed batters box. You really need something to hit hard on the ground that they can handle to turn two quickly. that one outside and that’s ball two. Really been able to slow down the game tonight with his at bats and the biggest one he’s had so far. He doesn’t look anxious at all. Clips the outside corner now. Two and one. Really nice spot there on that two to get back in the count. I mean, hitters looking to turn on something, but tough pitch like that, he’s just going to take it. That one finds the zone and that is strike two. Battling here as he fouls it away. keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. And that’s where this win. It’s a strikeout. Manager out of the dugout now. And it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Jason Adams gives way. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. now pitching. So they turn to their closer, Robert Suarez. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different, so we’ll see what he’s got here. And a foul ball. Suarez off of first with two away. Misses outside. One and one. Wow. Triple digits on the gun. I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past, but it’s still impressive to watch. Swings with a fast ball up in the zone. Looking very settled on the mound here in the eighth. One more out. They’ll probably hand it off to their closer for the ninth with at least a two-run lead. Gets a piece and stays alive. Two outs. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And it’s two and two. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. Full count. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. And here’s a 3-2. And the tying run is on base. Pretty much the last thing you want from your bullpin arms are free passes, especially in spots like this. Make the team earn their way on. So a change being made out at second on a pinch run. Blaze Alexander. First and second, two outs. Now up next for Arizona, Jose Herrera, one for three. They had a strike right through there. That one in triple digits. There it was. A high velocity fastball in the zone. I think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter. He’s got good stuff. Pitch inside the zone and trusted. Line drive. Base hit into the outfield. Runner around third. He’ll score. And it’s an RBI single. And it’s now 54. Well, that at bat had a lot riding on it. Certainly a pivotal swing of the bat in this ball game. So much of good hitting is finding holes in the defense. That’s why you’re always thinking line drive into the gap. Those kinds of swings really boost your confidence. And now looking for some two out magic. Most likely going to need a hit to even this thing up. As a runner on third have a good secondary lead. Anticipate the ball in the dirt. Be ready to score however you can. Carol at the plate and takes high there. Big spot. Two out. Both the tying and go-ahead runs are aboard. Bounding ball here. Rolls. Foul. And a count. One and two. And there’s a ball. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. And that one hit 97 on the gun. 3-2, two out, runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. Back and forth we go. A seessaw battle in the late stages of this one. And that’s ripped for a base hit. Running from third in to score. It’s an RBI single. A big two out hit and the game is tied. These guys today are so great with handling velocity. They’re seen high speeds day after day and a nice job of turning that one around. And the Padres’s manager making his way towards the mound as he will make the move. Robert Suarez out of the game. And it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Now pitching for new pitcher now, Yuki Matsui. Number one, this softball has been really good against left-handed hitters. Matsui. Big back coming up for Catel Marte. Outfield playing very deep, not wanting anything over their heads. on the corner for a strike. Next offering in there for a strike. No balls, two strikes. Two outs. Couple of base runners at first and second. pitch misses at a count one and two. Well, if he’s going to do something special right here, it’s going to have to happen with two strikes. Got it. Inning over and it could have been worse, but they score twice and even it up late. Home half of inning number eight straight ahead. We’re all tied up 55 out of the bottom of the eighth. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Xander Bogarts. And there’s the strike. The Diamondbacks with some movement in the pen. John Curtis appears to be getting loose. Diffani also throwing. The shorts stop takes a ball. Rips one to right. That’s a base hit. And a go ahead run is on base. Couple of hits in a row for him here. Got a fast ball middle of the plate. Jumped all over. Absolutely smoked that ball. Now a pinch hitter coming out for the Padres. Jose Glacius. Great spot. He’s looking to come through with that go-ahead run on base. Fast for a strike. Now the one fouled off down the right side with two strikes. may see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Got him. One gone in the bottom of the eighth. Well, I think that’s a case of overthinking right there. You got three straight fast balls looking in the 02 count just to pour it back. Brooks. And here’s the first baseman, Trenton Brooks. That one pulled foul. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get into scoring position. One away. Tie game. Go ahead run stands at first and fouled off. sets him down looking. Fast ball the letters froze him for strike three. Well, interesting. He’s looking very comfortable out of this stretch after giving up the lead off single backto back strikeouts. So, they haven’t been able to move that runner up, get him into scoring position and try to have a better chance of scoring. I tell you, good job so far on the mound. He just needs one more out. And here’s the catcher, Elias Diaz. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. That misses. Ball one. One ball, no strike. Step off, throw to first. Bogard dives back. Two gone. The possible go ahead run at first. Fought off foul. Pretty good pitch there to take a rip at. He wants to get his arms extended. He likes the ball away from him a little bit. Just not able to square it up. Outside with a breaking ball. And that is out of play with the go-ahead run at first here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Hit on the ground to short for Domo. Zips it to first. Out number three. They get a leadoff single but leave him stranded. Through eight full. We’re all tied up 55. All set to start the ninth in this one. Now here is Peraldo Peromo. There’s the strike. Ball one there. You don’t want to get beat by a fast ball in and he spits on that one. Activity in the bullpen for San Diego. Wandi Peralta, the left-hander up and throwing. Next offering is in for a strike. really going after him here. All fast balls to get ahead in the count. Lined into left center. Should be extra bases. Safe at second with nobody out. And that double has the go-ahead run and scoring position. Well, that certainly feels good when you can win the atbat after being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there. Breaking ball was in a decent spot down and in, but he did a really nice job getting to it before it tied him up. Really important at bat coming up now. Josh Naylor stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Hit on the ground to short. Bogarts with the throw to first. Now one gone in the ninth. Now battle third base. So the go-ahead run in scoring position. Here’s the third baseman. Bla1 Alexander entered as a pinch runner. So this is his first plate appearance and it comes here in the ninth. And that hits the inside corner for a strike. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. Stop sign goes up at third. Runners at the corners with one out. That always feels amazing getting a job done when the team needs you to come through. It’s just bigger than your own individual stats. Just a simple ground ball the other way that had eyes on it, man. Sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. Now, that sets up a huge at bat in this ball game. Now, here is Lordis Guriel Jr. Pitch out, but no action. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. Guriel gets a piece in the infield at the corners. Don’t be surprised to see them come home first and prevent that run from scoring. Off the mark there. Two balls in a strike. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. And that one fouled off. 2-2 now. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Huge strike out there. Now a chance for Jake McCarthy. Jake McCarthy. that misses and it’s one and0 with the go ahead run in third here in the top of the ninth Chris with that distraction and a speedy guy at first he’s in a favorable hitter count well if nothing else I mean this is a great spot for a hitter to be in Randall Gritic in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Two on, two outs. And there’s the strike. Little chopper rolls foul. It’s a hitter. You don’t know what to expect here in the 3-2. If he’ll throw a breaking ball 3-1, he’ll do it again. 3-2. fouls it back with two strikes. Runners on first and third. Two away. Got him looking. They miss a big chance to take the lead here late. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. back now as they hand the ball to a fresh arm to start the bottom of the ninth. John Curtis for Arizona. Number 46, John Curtis. Back to the top of the order now. Fernando Tatis Jr. getting ready to hit the pitch junior. It’s good speed at the top of the order here. You want to get it on, see if you can get a stolen base, maybe get around the bases and pick up a run. Activity in the bullpen. Ray Uribe up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Cold out on strikes. He’s got to be frustrated with that call. Well, he’s going to have some thinking to do when he leaves the ballpark after this one. That was his third strike out and this one looking obviously. So, he’s been a little overmatched. He’s got to find a way just to be more competitive up there at the plate. Luis Araz the next up for the Padres’s 0 for four with four ground outs. Check swaying and he went. That’s strike one. 01. Ripped into left for a base hit. I was watching his rounds during batting practice today. so impressed with his ability to let the ball travel, go back up the middle and the other way. Sometimes when you step during the game, you get a little anxious and you get away from that, but so far I’ve seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation. Here in the bottom of the ninth, one out. Manny Machado up to the plate. Right through there for a strike. Let’s go. Let’s go. Let’s go. And Manny gets a piece. left field. Guriel sizing this one up. Makes the grab and there’s two gone. Just pull off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. Gavin Sheets will hit next. and fires in a fast ball at 95. And I know you want to be patient as a hitter, but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight. And he got one right there, but left the bat on his shoulder. Swinging a ground ball down the line and it’s fouled. trying to send this to extra innings. Not close with that one and the count is one and two in the air left field. Guriel has it sized up, makes the grab and that will end the inning. Padres’s leave one and this remains a five5 ball game. Now pitching back down and we’re in extras. A new arm on the mound here in the top half of the inning. Wandy Peralta. And he’s had a struggle so far this year. As you can see the inflated RA looking to bring that down a little bit right here. Yeah, the batter now Randall Gritic man at second, nobody out. Chris certainly one of the things in his head is trying to get the runner over. Yeah. The way that we see the game played today though, guys are not sacrificing as much just to get that runner across. They’re really looking at doing damage. Slugging is the name of the game. Swang and a popup. Brings it in and a quick out number one. Now batting catcher Jose at the pl Jose Herrera. Well, both sides equally as strong. So not a good time to try to turn him around with a belief pitcher and put him on the other side of the plate. And that one just misses a ball and no strikes. Bullpen action for the Padres’s. Number 19 appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. up the middle. Bogarts with the throw to first. Two in a row set down to start the 10. The batter number seven designated Corbin. Now Corbin Carroll to the dish for a big at bat. first offering and it just misses and another ball. Two down. Go ahead run in scoring position and that’s fouled off. Two outs. and fouled off. Foul ball. Another two- two upcoming. Just misses the mark outside the zone. Ball four. He walked in and that keeps things going. Well, a breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. So, two outs with runners on the corners. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Catel Marte. Fast ball for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Well, if he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way, he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. Go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch. Just missed. If it were an average catcher behind the plate, I’d say take second base. But this isn’t a catcher you want to run on. His quick release is unreal. Swang and a highf fly ball. Well struck on a dead sprint. Racing back onto the track and he makes the catch. Diamondback strand of pair. Our score holds at five a piece. On to the bottom of the tenth. Here’s the center fielder Jackson Merrill. Listen, there’s absolutely no reason to pitch to this guy right here. You nibble, you see if he’ll expand his zone, but don’t give him anything to hit. If you walk him, not a big deal. You have a double play opportunity set up. And that one hit to first. Naylor steps on the bag. One out in the bottom of the tenth. The batter number two. Short stop. Xander making a move at third. Here’s the Padres’s pinch runner, Tyler Wade. Now running at third base. And here comes Sander Bogarts. Tyler, the goal is to give your teammate a chance to score from third. There’s a few ways he can get it done, but his best chance is to drive one in the air. Look for the right pitch up and then smoke it. Definitely a strikeout situation right here. Lots of ways for that go-ahead run to score if the ball’s put in play. The short stop takes a ball. Right down to shoot. It’s a ball in two strikes. One down and a winning run at third. fights that one away. Still one and two. Slider misses outside. Two two down. Line drive caught. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove. But you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. Jose Glacius the next up for the Padres’s went down looking on three pitches last time. Let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. No ball, one strike. That clips a corner. He doesn’t seem to like to pitch up. Hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches. 02 count now. I think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out there. Lined and that’s a base hit. Across is the winning run and the Padres’s walk it off in extra innings. So exciting to see a team walk it off. Not so much fun if you’re on the other side, but what a great way to win. This team is celebrating and this win is welld deserved. 65 the final here today. A oneun extra inning win for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon.
