People are ‘underestimating’ Schottenheimer, What are the Cowboys’ expectations? | BREAKFAST BALL
Um, anyhow, the Cowboys missed the playoffs the last year, three straight years at 12 wins under coach Mike McCarthy. And now Brian Shottenheimimer, their OC at that time, has become the head coach and trying to lead them back to glory. So, uh, coach, what do you see? What do you expect to see from the Cowboys under year one again with Shotti being the offensive, uh, or being the head coach now from the offensive? I think I think people are underestimating what Brian can do. So Brian was my offensive coordinator in New York when um uh when I was with the Jets and one of the things that I really liked about Brian is that he put a lot of pressure on the defense. So we had played San Diego the year before. He was there. He was part of that system and his offensive system put a ton of pressure on our defense in New England because there were shifts, motions, multiple formations. Everything was challenging. So then I bring him in for the interview. really smart, had a conviction on what he wanted to do offensively, but also very open to other things that we wanted to add. So, we wanted to add elements of what we did in New England, some things that we had been doing it they had been doing in New York, the things he was bringing. So, I like that part of of his approach as well. He was willing and uh to to run the ball and be committed to running the football, which I thought was important. So Brian, I I know wasn’t the the the the sexy hire or the exciting hire necessarily for Dallas, but I think it’s an underrated hire because he’s just as as capable as any of these other for firsttime head coaches, and I think he’s going to be excellent. Yeah, I always like Brian. The the beef as a Jet fan with Brian was after you were gone uh in the AFC Championship game against the Steelers, the play calling at the goal line, which Jet fans will never forget, and some of the decision-m there. But what I liked about Brian Shottenheimimer, look, he’s a football lifer. His dad obviously is Marty Shottenheimimer, so he grew up breathing, eating, and talking football, which I think there’s a lot of merit to that. Number one. Number two, he was able to run successful offenses with young quarterbacks, veteran quarterbacks, and rookie quarterback in Mark Sanchez. Now, the Jets with Sanchez obviously went to ground and pound with Rex after you went to Cleveland, but he was able to adapt to what he had. He wasn’t just one of those guys which we see in sports a lot where I only know how to do it one way and that’s the only way I’m going to do it and the personnel I have is is irrelevant because this is how I call a football game. So I think he will be good. I can’t s say the Cowboys are winning a Super Bowl, but if Dak Prescott stays healthy and the Cowboys can figure out how to run the football, do not be surprised if that offense clicks. I like Brian Shimer a I I do as well and and you know I I take notes like constantly when I’m calling games. Some of the things that I’ve taken away from Brian Shottenheimer as an offensive coordinator. So here’s three things I really like. Uh one, he’s a play repeater. That to me says, “Hey man, we have an identity. We’re going to run the ball. We’re going to repeat plays. We’re going to make you stop us, right? We’re not going to stop ourselves or out trick ourselves. We’re going to do the things that we do well.” The other thing I liked was formationally and personnel grouping. I’ll give you the same formation. I’ll give you the same personnel group, but I’ll run different stuff out of that. So, I’ll get you set in a in a system defensively and make you feel like, okay, this is what’s coming and then something else is going to get we’re going to hit you with something else, right? So, he’s really good with that. And then the other thing is fishing for information. Using a play that was successful, what is the information that I garnered from that play and how can I use that to to change that play or to attack that defense in a similar way? So, I’m going to show you something that happened uh uh week five last year against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Okay, here’s Shotti calling the play. You’ve got a two deep safety look, right? You’ve got the corners out here in press. So, they’re trying to jam inside release, make the receiver take an inside release so the safeties can get over the top. Horrible up a top. So, that’s wide open, but also that seam running in the middle is wide open. So, you use that information on a big completion. Right now, it was a 3×1 formation. You get 3x one by the other side. You flip the formation and you’ve got the same look, right? you’re going to get wider safeties. Now, let’s attack that middle of the field because that was wide open as well because, you know, the corners are going to play stiffer. You know, that first play was in the second quarter, that play was in the third quarter. So, the corners are going to adjust the way they play. The safeties are going to adjust. So, that’s fishing for information, using that information um to your advantage. And you look at the the offensive ranks under Shotti as the offensive coordinator, man, he was outstanding. Now there is that question when you go from being a play caller you’ve done it right as a defensive play caller to all of a sudden being the head coach and like I don’t know did you did you still call the defense as head coach? No I look I wanted to be the head coach of the whole team and I think Brian’s going to going to try to do the same thing. I think he’ll call the plays the first year but eventually evolve into to you know trying to oversee the whole thing. Now, the the other advantage that Brian has is he brought in Matt Eberfloose and Matt’s a guy so he was my linebacker coach in Cleveland and Matt’s another guy that you can say what you want to say about him as a head coach but as a defensive coordinator he was excellent and and you saw when he took over in Chicago how much they improved last year and I think he’s going to be really good there as well and that gives Brian another guy with head coaching experience on the defensive side so Brian can push most of his attention to to the offensive Do you think that’s the way it has to be done? Like a head coach needs to be the CEO of the team. Do you think the best way to do it? Regardless of what side of the football you come from, you still need to hire someone else to be in charge of the offense, to be in charge of the defense with your input, but someone else has to do it, right? Yeah. Look, the models the models have have been all over the place in terms of how people want to do it, but if you’re not the head coach of the whole team, it makes it difficult to have a a coordinated effort going into the game. And then when critical decisions come up, if you don’t know what’s happening on the other side of the ball, if you don’t know uh how the situation could potentially play out, then you’re not re you’re not really the head coach. You’re just the offensive coordinator with the title as opposed to and I assume players recognize that very quickly, right? Yeah. Players recognize it and and then there’s also the personnel decisions that go into who are you going to bring, who are you going to activate, you know, how do they all fit in? Um, players want to understand or want to know that that that you have a sense of what they’re doing and contributing. So, if guys have to get cut or moves have to be made, you know, you’re you’re making a informed decision. Yeah. You end up coaching as a head coach and I’ve heard this with, you know, Shanahanss and and in that tree of you’re the head coach of the coaches too, right? So, you’ve got to coach exactly what you want, but to stay connected and it’s one of the reasons a lot of guys will give up play calling duty. Like Dan Campbell is a play caller and then he decided, hey, listen man, I got to groom Ben Johnson, bring Ben Johnson along, make him the play caller so I can effectively Sirani did this too. Seriani was like, he did it for different reason, right? Well, Siri, they were struggling, but Siri said, “Hey, man, I need to be able to be the head coach of the team. I want to know what the defense is doing. I want to have that connection when they come off the field, not have my face buried in a play chart.” and and coaches are holding players accountable all the time. Someone has to hold the coaches accountable as well, right? And that’s the role of the head coach is to make sure that everybody’s, you know, doing what they’re supposed to do. Well, you know who holds the coaches accountable? The fans. That’s that’s our job every Monday 6:00 a.m. That That’s our job. Why the hell did you throw the football on third and one, you idiot? That kind of stuff. Yeah. Yeah. The throw didn’t work. You should have run it. Didn’t work. Should have Oh, we’ve never lost again. Don’t you understand that? That’s right. They should hire all you. They should hire all you fans. [Music] Hey, [Music] hey, hey.

Hilarious propaganda!! How much did JERRY PAY YOU to write this?!? Its that time of year, Jerry "spin machine" is on full force! I've seen this song and dance for over 30 years IN A ROW, and people STILL fall for the propaganda! JUST STOP THE LIES!
When Matt Eberfloose moved from Dallas to the Colts as their defensive coordinator, the Colts defense almost shut the Dallas Cowboys out the next year. It was truly a beat down.
As long as Jerry Jones has GM authority of the team, Cowboys will suffer. And if the Giants can get things together, Cowboys could finish in the basement!
Eagles SB 52 and 59 Champs baby!
LoL, Sirianni was told to put on headphones stand on the sidelines and stay out of the way! 😅
Slow news day…..
I don't think we know what to expect from Schotty at this point. Yes he's been with the team for 3 years but pretty hard to get a good read on an OC who doesn't call the plays and being a good OC doesn't make you a good HC. I think there's a positive change in the culture with him. Time will tell if that's even to counter Jerry's country club/entitlement/the show is more important than the football results culture that has been there basically since Johnson left the building. McCarthy and Garrett were both guys who knew the X's and O's of the game and the players liked but they were yes men for Jerry and had the intensity of a cadaver. It feels like Schotty is not that kind of guy. I think with his lifetime in football, his relationship already established with a lot of the roster and if he has some of his Dad's vibe in him he's got a shot at being a pleasant surprise.
No, they aren't. Hes going to be Jason Garrett 2.0. He says the right things, so our stupid fans fall for it, like they fall for everything else in the off-season.
I’m on board Dallas needed a change and not knocking Big Mike he did some good things but he had his chance , don’t like the idea of retreads either ,Schotty has a great staff around him and players are being brought in which is different than past
More and more delusional conversations they have to be pretty bored 🥱
Cowboys!!! You have 6 running backs!!! Run the ball!!!
Cowboys defense!!!! BLITZ ON EVERY DOWN!! 😮
Me being a Cowboys fan my whole life smh 😒
If they really payed attention to cowboys games they wouod know mcarthy was calling plays he came out his mouth several times when media kept asking if he was gonna give up calling plays amd he consistently said no
I love the people who take there time of day to watch the video and hate on the cowboys 😂
Jerry and dak have a few minions that take over youtube but most people know wassup . Jerry is a sucker
We the best when we run the ball play action etc… get back to that please!!! Stop this pass first stuff
If Schotty is so good, Why did the cowboys only win seven games last year?
There’s no evidence to suggest he is being underestimated. Or to the contrary. Who knows how it’ll go for him. One thing is for certain: McCarthy should have been fired after the playoff loss to the Packers two years ago. He didn’t have his team ready to play that day. Ludicrous that Jerry actually brought him back for another year after that embarrassment.
The fist he does something Jerry don’t tell him to do he’s cooked
I'm not jumping on the wagon yet, I've been a dallas fan for 50+ years. Not gonna fall for the hype. Time will tell
I think the cowboys have a better year 11-6.. make it to the nfc chip
To all due respect “coach” if u where any good u would be coaching in the NFL
Is Craig always hammered?
The latest Jets fired regime found positions in the organizations from which they left. In hindsight, if egos could have been put aside, would Mangini have been open to a consultant/scouting role for Rex's Jets post CLE HC stint?
