The top four teams at getting bang for their buck over the last five years are the four teams many would place among the best at doing so: Florida ($1 million), Vegas ($743,000), Carolina ($651,000) and Colorado ($610,000).

  1. Canada not doing so bad in this, considering the generally higher tax burden and……lack of winning cups.

  2. Washington state doesn’t have a state income tax either and Seattle is last on this list.

  3. Washington state has no income taz. I assume Seattles number is due to being a recent expansion team?

  4. I don’t think this is the best way to do this analysis, but I’m not exactly sure the methodology used.

It’s something like 2% for the no state tax teams but they often have other costs to offset it all.

  5. By this logic the dolphins, heat, magic, buccaneers, rays, etc. Should all be powerhouses since their players can net more money there, it should be bringing talent in.

  6. How do they separate players giving a discount to be on a competitive team as opposed to taking less to make an equivalent to taxes?

  7. Can we please stop with this nonsense. Players pay taxes to the respective states when traveling for road games. Florida sucked for 25 of the last 35 years.

  8. This makes no sense. Why is tampa worse than miami. If anything the sales tax down here is higher.

  9. This isn’t a thing. Players want to go somewhere they can feel they can win.

No state tax is just a perk. No one was having this discussion when the penguins and blackhawks were winning multiple cups in the 2010s.

It’s a made up point to create clicks and silly discussions.

  10. This is the kind of journalism teams want to put out to push away blame for their bad ownership, teambuilding, team chemistry, and failure to win clutch playoff games. This is – seriously – the only sport I watch where people have begun to complain about this.

The NHL doesn’t pay shit in comparison to the NFL, NBA, or MLB. Legendary franchises in those leagues come from states that will absolutely wreck you on in-state taxes. Could you imagine the kind of taxes Michael Jordan paid in Illinois playing for the Bulls? Kobe for the Lakers? Dude, these graphs aren’t sports news. It’s genuinely bad journalism and finger pointing from bad teams. Teams need to stop making excuses and take note.

  11. It’s notable that there are 4 Canadian cities in the top 11. And lately, Edmonton has had some free agents sign at a discount as they want to play with great players and win.

Some players want to live in a nice city where it’s relatively peaceful and a great place to raise their kids, like Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, and Vancouver. Even though they pay more taxes. When you’ve made a ton of money already, making a little bit less to have an enjoyable, comfortable life for their family is appealing.
