backs have been playing each other for the last two months straight. But that is uh the nature I guess of one of these four game series. Yeah, these four game series can feel like months on end as you just finished explaining and the Padres’s certainly in these first three games of the four game set uh have lost two and are looking to try to walk away with a split here. Uh this has been a tough home stand so far and a win here today would set them up nicely because the Phillies are coming and you’re going to see the best three guys that they have. Yes. Uh it’s going to be quite a weekend here against the Phillies. Kind of three-headed monster in terms of pitching. Padres’s continue this month to alternate wins and losses. Wins and losses. Uh that’s fine if you’re just trying to stay afloat. And heading into the All-Star break, I think a lot of teams probably feeling that kind of way. Mike Schilt even said before the game tonight, it’s been a grind. It has been a grind. And the Padres’s uh remember coming back to this home stand. Got in extremely late, had an event they had to kind of participate in the next day. And then as you as Jesse said, they have alternated between win and loss. And uh it has been a grind. There hadn’t been an off day in there for them to kind of really recharge. And so you you’re trying to get to the break. Guys won’t be taking days off while you’re this close to the break. And so the grind will continue here today. Padres’s looking to get in the winning lane. Homestead began Fourth of July against the Rangers that late afternoon game. Randy Vasquez was on the mound. He was really good in sixth innings. He was. And you know, unfortunately, Randy is kind of been like a lot of the starters. They have had great starts outside of Nick Paveta. They’ve had great starts, they’ve had some bad ones. His last one was great. He went six innings, only gave up the two runs. The previous start though, he went only four and a third. So, can he put backto back good ones together? Padres’s are certainly hopeful he can. If he does, Bods will be in a good position to try and win. and Roto Rodriguez, the left-hander on the hill for the Diamondbacks. Another guy that has had stop me if you’ve heard this before. A very up and down season. Pods will hope that he is down here tonight. Take a break. Come back. Tony’s got the starting lineups for you when we return. Fourth of four against the Snakes. And Martine Maldonado behind the dish for the Padres’s. He’ll bat ninth. On the mound, Randy Vasquez, three and four with a 379 ERA. Jesse. All right, we are ready to go. TG Randy on the mound and Corbin Carroll in the dish dhing for the first time in a long time. Got to go back to May of 2023 for the last time that Corbin Carroll was a designated hitter. And he takes a first pitch cutter for a called strike. Nothing and one. We are underway. Daryl Homer in his last at bat yesterday. That made it 8-2 Arizona in the ninth inning. That would be the final score. Cutter inside to even the count. One and one. Prior to that, he had struck out all four times he had come to bat and he has now struck out nine times in his last 17 abs. Bit of a struggle at the moment for Carol. Four for 13 in this series. So, he does have a double, a triple, and that home run. One and one. Vasquez delivers and his first breaking ball of the night is a good one at the bottom of the zone. And the count goes to a ball and two strikes. Perfectly executed sweeper right at the bottom of the zone. Outside corner moves ahead one, two. Pitch on the way and Carol takes a change up that floats outside. The lights just came on at the ballpark very suddenly. I shot a flash in here. I was looking around. Thought somebody had a flashlight but Dave did drop at Eminem. Ball fouled right back towards us and it remains two balls and two strikes. So he had to light it out trying to find him. Yeah, that’s sounds about right. Also, yeah, the stadium lights were not on until right before whatever that was, third or fourth pitch of the game. two-2 and Carol swings pops it up off the edge of the bat foul territory right side the catcher Maldonado over towards the dugout but that’ll come down in the 10th row behind the Padre bench and still two and two to Corbin Carol who’s 5 for 10 in his career against Randy Vasquez Vasquez faced the Diamondbacks three times last year they were all outstanding the last time he faced these guys the opposing starter was tonight’s Arizona starting pitcher lefty Eduardo Rodriguez two and two to Carol Vasquez in battle mode here right out of the shoot seventh pitch of the atbat and just a little bit outside with that backup breaking ball the count fills three and two good miss there tried to back door that sweeper in the outside corner missed just off the plate now the payoff pitch Carol swings pops it foul out of play left side we do it again so a tough start to the night for Randy Vasquez has his medal being tested here by Corbin Carroll. Three and two to the left hand hitting leadoff guy. Vasquez delivers and he challenged him with a fast ball. Carol hits it in the air to center field fairly deep but playable. Jackson Merrill about 10 ft in front of the warning track and he makes the catch for the first half of the game. Game time temperature tonight 72 degrees brought to you by Lineage Watch Company, San Diego’s very own watch brand. And the official time piece of the Padres’s radio network appears today at lineagewatchco.com. That’s lineagewatchco.com. Well, nobody on for the switch hitting Catel Marte. He’ll be the starting second baseman for the National League on Tuesday night in Atlanta and the All-Star game. Had a fast ball strike to him. Nothing at one. Third straight start for Marte over at second base. Remember he was scratched couple of hours before game one of the series. Sweeper strike at the knees. Nothing at two. Marte hitting .290. 19 home runs already with 40 runs batted in. This is only his 66th game of the year. Here’s the 0 and2. Marte takes the change up outside and the count goes to a ball and two strikes. Left hamstring strain cost him about a month earlier this season but has still put up allstar number. Here’s the one and two. Marte takes low and the cat is even. Two balls, two strikes. The soft tissue injuries have been a part of the career of Patel Marte when he’s healthy though. One of the best in the league. No doubt about it. Here’s the 22 from Vasquez. Grounded foul at first base. And a lot of breaking stuff here early on from Randy Vasquez tonight. And he’s getting more and more comfortable with his breaking stuff. I think he’s also getting more and more comfortable with the cutter. Threw a lot of those to Corbin Car. It’s a great pitch just to get off the barrel. Two and two to Marte. Switch hitter batting left-handed and a little bit low with another sweeper and a full count. Three and two. So, Carol worked a nine pitch at bat to lead off. And now we’re talking pitch seven about to be delivered to Marte. 3-2 swinging a miss. Blew him away with a fast ball and two down here in the top of the first inning. If we’re going to get in one of these battles, certainly want to come out on the right side and both at bats got the weak fly ball to center and then after six pitches to Cel Marte on the seventh, he punches him out for out number two. Final game of this four-game series. Padres’s trying to earn the split. Last night’s game got away in the fifth inning. Raldo Purdomo gets in, takes a fast ball strike, nothing at one. And it got away when this guy hit a grand slam. kind of a two out back breaker in the top of the fifth. Took like a two nothing game to a six nothing game. Slow grounder to first base. It’ll go right over the bag. Gobbled up by Arise and he steps on first and a one, two, three. Top of the first inning for Randy Vasquez. Nothing doing for the Dbacks. Rodriguez coming up against Rodriguez on the big hits. Oh, the great brats. You got to be kidding me. and all the swagger. Relive the day’s biggest plays all in one lightning fast hour. Show. You better believe it. Quick pitch. Late nights and early mornings only on MLB Network. Take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager said the following. I really don’t know what to say. That’s why I trust Petco for the food they love and the services they need to stay happy and healthy all at great prices. PCO official Pet Park for the San Diego Padre. No score. Bottom of the first inning. Fernando Tatis Jr. leads off and he takes a fast ball inside from the lefty Eduardo Rodriguez for ball one. Rodriguez not going to burn it up there in terms of velocity. He’ll be low 90s with both fast balls. 10 pitch in the air and foul out of play right side. He’s also got a change up, a cutter and a slider for Rodriguez this year. Good strikeout numbers, good walk numbers. Very good job limiting hard contact. That’s kind of how he makes his living when he’s going right. pitches a change up outside. Two and one and in his last start he was not going right. Fourth of July at home against Kansas City didn’t get out of the fifth inning. Gave up nine runs on a dozen hits including three home run. Two-1 pitch. Tati swings and misses at that change. And the count is two and two. The nine runs allowed tied his careerh high. He made five starts in June. Gave up seven total runs and he gave up nine the other day against KC. This ball is cool. 22 launched in the air to left field. Burielle is back to his left. He’s got room and he makes the catch. One away. A little bit off the end on the fast ball. Throwing about 92 miles per hour and there’s a good stroke from TDY, but get our first look at it. Got in on him just a hair. Good pitch to attack. High ball to left. So one out, nobody on for a rise. Lefty to lefty against Rodriguez. And a fast ball well placed on the outside corner for a strike. Nothing at one. Vinnie Pascantino got him twice in that game. And Mark Cana also homered against him his last time. Here’s the 01 pitch. Arise hits it on the ground. Snagged by Rodriguez. Nice play. And the long throw to first is in time from a top the mound. Two down in the bottom of the first inning with Manny Machado coming up. So had a home run trouble in his last start. Padres and Kors don’t really hit a lot of home runs. They get about as little of their offense from the long ball as any team in baseball this year. Yeah, at the bottom in terms of percentage of offense from the home run. And guess if you’re Eduardo Rodriguez, you feel good about that. Here’s Manny with two outs, nobody on in a scoreless game. He takes the fast ball a little bit in. One and0. Looked good. Didn’t get the call. I think the catcher Herrera might have said something about not getting that call and then Manny shot Herrera quite a look. Here’s the one and0 and Machado takes high. Two balls, no strikes. There is more dialogue down there between those two. Rodriguez works from the extreme third base side of the rubber and the two to Manny is at the bottom of the zone and the called strike two and one. Sort of dropped that change up in there. Rodriguez in his second year with the Diamondbacks last year just marred by injury. Tied a four-year contract with them. Didn’t debut until late summer. Two-1 pitch way outside. Three balls and a strike. Season debut came last August 7th. Had a lat strain suffered in spring training and made only 10 starts his first year with the Diamondback. Three and one to Machado. Two outs, nobody on, no score. First inning, a pit and Manny fouls it back towards Tony. And a full count. Three and two. Had some steam on it. Would have been a good one to avoid. Yes. Three and two to Machado. Rodriguez deals and Manny swings, laces it to left center. Guriel shaded towards the gap, but he’s not going to get there. Run hops up against the wall. Guriel’s got it. Sends it to second base. Patrad slides in feet first. He’s safe and a two out double. Tell you, you almost could sense that coming. He got behind 3-1. Manny fouls the 3-1 pitch straight back. Went back to that change up and Manny was ready. It was a good pitch. It was down and away. Just the IQ on on the hitter right here was just too high. Double two out double for Manny Machado. That was the Padres’s first hit of the game brought to you by Frozen Ropes Travel Ball. Three triyouts are underway for ages 7 to 14 with coach Kirk and his frozenroppes team. Check them out at San Diego frozenroppes.com. That’s San Diego frozenropppes.com. Like Corbin Carroll doing the DH duties today. A couple of guys that don’t often do it although Manny more frequently this year than Carol. This is the ninth time this season Manny has been the designated hitter. coming into this game three for 30 as a DH this year but a double in his first at bat here tonight sheet stands in lefty to lefty against Rodriguez first pitch coming is low and away ball one and despite the fact that Rodriguez is a southpaw left-handed hitters have absolutely torn him apart this year left-handed hitters are basically Aaron Judge against Eduardo Rodriguez this season 1 and0 swings grounds it foul right They are hitting 352 against Rodriguez with an OPS over a thousand. That’s basically the Earn Judge. Maybe even a little better. It It is no lies told. Quite a visual for Rodriguez every time he faces a left-handed hitter. Manny on second. Two outs, no score, first inning. And the pitch to Sheets fouled straight back on a line. One and two. Interesting for Sheets. I mean, it hasn’t really mattered. Actually hitting a titch better against left-handed pitching than right-handed, but 640 or excuse me, 264 from the left hand side, 260 against right. And a huge part of his improvement and the ability for the Padres’s to leave him in there every night. One-two pitch hit off of the leg of Rodriguez ticks over towards the third baseline. That’ll be a base hit. So that batting average, the left-handed hitters goes up against Rodriguez. Although this one some good fortune as it ricocheted off the foot or the leg of the pitcher and kicked over towards the third baseline. He’ll come out to check on him and he advances to third. And so you’ve got runners on the corners. Two outs here in the bottom of the first inning. Ball hit hard. Catches the right foot of Rodriguez. Infield singer for Gavin Sheets. Keeps the inning alive for Xander Bogart. How much was he not bothered by that? They won’t even do the peruncter warm-up pitches with the trainer standing there. No need to waste any pitches. You’re gonna check on him. He says he’s good. We’ll move on. He says, “I’m 32 years old. You got me on the shoe. I’m fine.” And Tory Lavell and the athletic trainer head back into the third base second. Danner Bogarts will be the batter. He and Rodriguez won a World Series together in Boston back in 2018. Bogarts has only faced him a couple of times, one out of two against him. Mind Rodriguez made a start against the Padres’s late last season against Vasquez in Fina. Two on, two out, no score. And the pitch to Bogart’s lined into left field. Guriel in a couple of steps and he makes the catch about shoulder high to end the inning. No runs, two hits and the Padres’s leave them on the corners. End of the second inning, no score. take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager said the following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something. These people cheer. We all did. I mean, it was a great game. Both teams played incredible. It was a great game. Dixie Line, a trusted name for over a hundred years, helping San Diego fix it, build it, and enjoy it. Top of the second inning, the trust in will score is the Padres’s nothing and the Diamondbacks nothing. Josh Naylor got the night off last night. Leads off and the left-handed batter takes high ball one. Naylor they say is uh is not injured but you know he’s a little beat up. That’s that’s what they’re saying about Josh Naylor right now. So they gave him the night last night. I backs rolled fouls this one back one and one. They put Tristan English over at first base yesterday. His major league debut. English 0 for four. A couple of strikeouts. Did collect an RBI on a ground out in the eighth inning. Played a nice first base too. Had a lot of action over there. But Naylor back in and a very dangerous hitter certainly as takes a good looking breaking ball that is called a ball maybe a little bit outside. And now two and one. Baylor, the former Padre and Ursil Cleveland Guardian, a free agent to be after this season. The one pitch is fouled back two and two. He’s their leading hitter, 296, 11 homers, 58 runs batted in and the fourth leading hitter in the National League entering play today. Numbers at home much better than on the road as you might expect playing at Light Chase Field. 331 in Phoenix, 260 on the road this year. answering a lot of questions coming into this year if he can fill the shoes of Christian Walker and he’s done that. Two and two is the count. Vasquez out of his wind up delivers and Aaylor takes in the dirt ball three. He of course is very high on a list that includes the dude on deck Suarez in terms of the trade deadline and whether those guys will still be in this uniform come August. They’ve got a lot of really interesting pieces. Here’s the 3-2 and Aaylor checks his swing, takes down and in. They appeal he didn’t go and a lead walk here in the top of the second inning as we pause 10 seconds for station identification on the Padres’s Radio Network. KWFN and KWFN HD1 San Diego. What’s up? Ignite your taste buds with the freshest flavors at Sinly Food. Discover authentic ingredients at 4665 Elcohone Boulevard. The cook’s Asian Resource. No score. Second inning. Suarez takes a fast ball strike. Nothing in one. Suarez hit his 29th home run of the season in last night’s game. Baylor at first and nobody away here as Arizona looks to scratch first against Randy Vasque. The 01 hit. Torres hits a ground ball up the middle. Bogards charges it. has it flips to second one. Runner’s turn is in time and a double play developed a little bit slowly but nicely done by both middle infielders and just like that two outs nobody aboard Valentine seemed to take a long look before he made the out call. They will not challenge though beats him barely and the Padres’s hit the friendly 643 double play. There’s Bang Bang over there. And you’re right, the first base umpire took a moment to sort of uh recreate it in his mind. Here’s a fast ball strike. Nothing in one to Guriel. That’s what it looked like. Hey, better that than rush it. 100%. Could little dramatic cliffhanger moment there. Oh, on to Guriel. Vasquez delivers and a chopper snagged by Randy as he hops off the hill. Runs it most of the way. Flipped to arrive is in time. And that’s all for the Diamondbacks here in the top of the second inning. Nothing doing, no score after one and a half. They charge your health with premium supplements. Visit symbiotica.com. Jackson Merrill leads it off against Rodriguez. Lefty to lefty. And the first pitch on the way. Jackson takes a fast ball down and in. One and0. Merryill obviously is uh in some kind of slump right now. It’s really the first one of his career. 0 for 11 in this series, but it goes well beyond that. 10 pitch. Jackson grounds it foul toward the Padre dugout on the right side. It’s a 1 for 25 home stand. If you want to go back further, he is three for his last 36. Beyond that, five for his last 57. And every guy on that field can feel exactly what he’s feeling as he lines at foul one and two. Yeah, it’s a it’s a tough place to be. I thought Bowden really said it perfectly the other day. A guy who’s had his fair share of kind of slumps and has been able to pull himself out. One and two. Merryill takes down and in. talked about that loneliness that you can feel when you’re going through it and certainly all your teammates are pulling for you but they can’t get in the box for you unfortunately and just one of those things Jackson is going to have to walk through two and two Rodriguez will work out of the wind up and deal and Jackson flinches takes low ball three this is a patient played appearance he’s turning into I will say this this may be a great matchup for him even though it’s lefty on lefty because I’m not sure that Erdo Rodriguez really pitches at the top of the zone so much, which is what has put Jackson in this slump. Three and two, here’s the payoff and Merryill swings and misses in a change up strike three. First K the day for Rodriguez. One out here in the bottom of the second inning. Stat of the day brought to you by Culligan Water of San Diego, providing advanced water treatment solutions, including softeners, filters, and bottled water. Ensuring cleaner, safer, and great tasting water for homes and businesses since 1936. And it involves the offense that has been slumping. Bobs lost 8-2 last night. Here’s Jose Glacius. One out nobody on takes downstairs ball one. And last night’s game the 21st time in the last 50 games. So nearly half of their last 50 games. They failed to score three runs or more. It’s low 2 and0. If I would have told you in spring training Padres’s are going to have a 50game stretch or told you in April Padres’s gonna have a 50-game stretch in which almost half the time they’re not going to score more than two runs, you would have said there’s no chance. But that has been the reality of the last two months. Two pitch down the middle and a strike to a glacius. Certain certainly if you told me an Abra I would have laughed at you in your face. Interesting thing is they were playing about 500 baseball during that time which is is is crazy scoring that little runs up and in check swing and now three balls in a strike to a glacius Rodriguez wants a wants on the field. No one is giving it to him. Glaciius gave him the safe side though and in the defense of Ryan Blakey he didn’t see it. He was chasing the baseball that got away so they never repealed. Glacius was the only one that saw it and he took care of it himself. 3-1 fast ball first strike that fills the count. Jose obviously a detached observer, right? Just a little. No score in the second. One out, nobody on the 3-2 and a Glacia swings and misses it. A fast ball strike three. Backto back haze for Rodriguez to begin the bottom of the second inning. That’ll bring up the number eight hitter, Jake Proinworth. You make a great point. They have uh they have really just had a terrible time offensively. 50 games again, it’s almost two months now and uh but still managing to kind of keep the whole thing afloat. I think that’s the perfect description, keeping it afloat. First pitch on the way to Croninworth and Jake takes a fast throw in in last year’s ball club. And I hate to compare the two, but they kind of were the same way. And it wasn’t until the offense took that step that they kind of took off from there. Oh, and oneorth takes low. In any other scenario, you’re scoring less than three runs a game. You’re losing a lot of them. Padres’s have been very fortunate to to win the amount of games they have despite the offense struggling. Great bullpen work, a big part of that, winning all those tight lowscoring games. Swinging a miss one and two to Cronin work. But, you know, I think ultimately it’s probably not sustainable for the rest of the season. But I think also most people around the team don’t expect it to continue. No doubt. No doubt. They expect the offense to be better. Remember last year it was the second game after the All-Star break in Cleveland when the bats came alive and then they were alive really the rest of the way until the middle of game three of the divisions here. Here’s the one and two and worth able to fight it off and foul it back. I’ll say this, the difference though is that even though they were up and down in the first half last year, you could see them setting the habits that would eventually turn into the consistency that we saw. Hasn’t quite been that way. They got out the gate with those habits, but have kind of regressed, I think, offensively from that standpoint. That’s very fair. Hard hit liner up the middle into right center to base hit for Croninworth. Third knock of the night for the Padres. They have all come with two outs and a single here to get Maldonado to the dish in a scoreless game. Bottom of the second inning. You’re right. I mean, the the the peaks and valleys offensively this year have been extreme and that was not the case last season. It was it was kind of they kind of were steady and then they just took off in that second half. And so I don’t know that they can depend on that type of second half if the offense can’t quite get to those habits and and really build from there. run over big lead at first and the pitch to Maldonado is high. Ball one. Padres’s looking to kickstart something here at the bottom of the order. Martineing 179 with four home runs, all of which have come on the first pitch of an at bat. One and0. Rodriguez delivers and misses downstairs with a change up. 2 and0 on Maldonado. And Cronorth has been very active over at first base. Right in Rodriguez face. Rodriguez traditionally in his career has done a good job holding runners, preventing stolen bases. A little less good this year. Here’s the 200 and a swing and a miss. He hasn’t been bad at it, but he hasn’t been as dominant or as locked down in terms of controlling the running game here in 2025 as he has the last few years. Aldonado will use his timeout after a big wave and a miss at that change up. Back of the box now on two and one. Brunenworth pretty big lead again at first base. Rodriguez checks in twice. He’ll throw over. Jake got a good read. Goes back in standing up without a tag from Naylor. First disengagement of the plate appearance. You know to be weird about the All-Star break next week. I won’t say the word disengagement one single time. No, you won’t. Two and one. Maldonado takes a strike on the outside edge. Coronado is two for three stealing bases this year. Just trying to distract Rodriguez, I think. Big lead. doesn’t throw over and outside ball three to Maldonado almost trying to force a throw over Rodriguez not willing to throw over at this point obviously will be running here on three and two Rodriguez does have a disengagement to play with if he wants to throw over again comes home runs and Maldonado pops it up foul ground first base Naylor over towards the dugout out has room and he makes the catch in front of the Padre bench to end the inning. No runs, a hit, Jake left on base and with two innings, no score against the Diamondback. Off base is coming in a brand new format. Bottom of the order for the Diamondbacks in a scoreless game. You know, we had somebody said in a question of the day the other day, they were asking what our favorite holiday was. They were indeed. We didn’t use it, though. No, we we passed on that. McCarthy left-handed batter takes fast ball a little bit outside. Ball one. They had one of the features between innings on the big board. You had to to start, bench, and trade. And you were given the three holidays or three holidays, Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Halloween. And the different players answered differently, of course. fastball strike. Top of the zone, one and one. The most hilarious but also predictable one was that Dylan ceased and he was the only one started Halloween. It was fitted. I mean, it couldn’t have been scripted out any better. Very on brand. Fouled away. Strike two to McCarthy. And it was no hesitation either, by the way. Like everybody else kind of was like him and Han. He was like start Halloween. Boom. McCarthy starting in right field. So Corbin Carroll could DH tonight. Was the designated hitter yesterday. went 0 for three. Padres’s ended his streak of reaching safely a 10 consecutive game. Ball and two strikes to him right here and right now. The pitch is away two and two from Randy Vasquez. McCarthy has started all four games of this series at four different defensive positions. You don’t see that every day. Here’s the 2-2 and he hits it in the air. Foul third base and Glacius racing over, but that’ll come down into the seats. fifth row couple of sections beyond the Arizona dugout. Now remains two and two. So McCarthy in game one on Monday was the left fielder. Then on Tuesday he started in center. He was the DH last night and he’s the right fielder here tonight. A little versatility. Still looking for his first hit of the series. But he’s done his bit defensively. Two two is in the dirt and now three balls, two strikes from Randy Vasque. I’m not a huge fan of the four game series. Yeah. So I I in your spot I can imagine why as a player does it even phase you at all. Go these guys again or you just kind of locked in on the pitcher so it doesn’t matter. Pitch outside and lead off well. It depends on the pitching staff. Phillies four game you’re not feeling great about. Not that’s not the best one you want to have. Get a pitching staff you know bottom of the league. Yeah. We’ll take all four of those. Let’s play six. See a couple of these guys twice. Second straight inning with a leadoff walk issued by Vasquez. Got a double play to erase it last inning. Randy got more double play grounders last year than any other Padre pitcher. Steps off here before the first pitch to the left hand hitting Alec Thomas. Thomas starting in center field for the third time in four games. He was scratched in game two. Joe’s bunt pulls back, takes in the dirt ball one. Had some right knee soreness. Feel like the Diamondbacks just the last couple of years. And this isn’t a shot at them or even a critique or criticism, just an observation, they they scratch a lot of guys late. They put their lineup out super early and then, you know, they adjust if somebody’s not right. A lot of teams will just hold the lineup back until the last minute. They don’t do that. bunted foul into the screen. One and one. Which one’s your preference as a as a broadcaster? I I if you give it to me five minutes before the game, but it’s right. We’re good. Okay. So, you rather have it late and correct than early and have changes because Well, I know you’re on the fancy iPad with your score sheet, but I am not. And so, the amount of white out that I went through on Monday, for instance. Yeah, it was crazy. One and one. Thomas takes low two balls in a strike. But I I appreciate that they’re not trying to hide anything. They’re trying to see if a guy is good to go. And hey, if he feels right, this is what we’re going with. And if he doesn’t, we’re going to change a bunch of stuff, but we’re going to tell you why. And I do appreciate that. Tells the story of the season and the grind that all these guys go through. Two and one, try to bunt again. Pulls back and right down the middle, but called the ball. So often you’ll see a guy pull a bunt back and it just prevents the umpire from getting a good look at It’s a screen and I guarantee you that’s what Ryan Blakeley is reach whispering in Maldonado’s ear right now. I didn’t see it. Runner on first. Nobody out. No score. Third inning. 3-1 pitch. Swinging away. Lines it over Arise and sharply down the line into right field. Bounce up against the bace of the fence. Fernando picks it up. Sends it into Croninworth and a double for Alec Thomas. McCarthy was held up at the very last second at third base and Fernando did a good job getting it in quickly preventing McCarthy from coming in to score. But the Diamondbacks are now set up. Runners on second and third and nobody out for the number nine hitter. Couple things on that play. I think I understand Vasquez irritation not getting that call, but he did put himself in that spot prior to that by falling behind. And I thought it was interesting Totty made an adjustment. He had been flying over there like his hair was on fire over the past couple of games and and the ball has ricocheted off that wall and kind of gotten by him this time. Although it looked like he was going at a slower speed, it was because he was anticipating what exactly happened. That ball coming off the wall, he was there, got it into the cut off man, and that is what prevented McCarthy from scoring there. Yeah, you’re exactly right. It looked different to me with Fernando tracking it down, and it didn’t click in my mind the way it did in yours, but yeah, you’re right. went after it totally differently. A little bit more in control, right? And for the moment, still no score. Herrera, switchitter, batting left-handed. Two on, nobody out. And he takes a fast ball low. One and0. Second start in the four game series for Herrera who’s splitting times with the veteran backs stop James McCann while Gabrielle Moreno is on the injured list. Herrera one for two with a double, a strikeout, and a hit by pitch in the second game of the series. 10 spins him away. An inside fast ball now. Two balls in no strikes on Herrera who’s hitting 188 with a homer and nine runs batted in this season. So this is certainly a guy to get if you’re Randy Vasco. Randy, of course, not a big strikeout pitcher. Did strike out Marte in the first inning though. Tuno and Herrera hits it in the air to right field. Fernando kind of measuring it up. He’ll come in, make the catch. McCarthy tagging at third on his way. The throw is a little bit up the line and not in time. A sack by for Herrera. Thomas also advances behind the play over to third base and the Diamondbacks take a one- nothing lead. The lead off walks back to Hurt Vasi as the sack fly brings in McCarthy. Diamondbacks take a one- nothing lead and they got another runner 90 ft away. And the top of the order coming up. So the Padres’s bring the infield in against Corbin Carroll. Left-handed hitter. Had a big battle with Vasquez leading off the game and eventually flew to center and he takes inside ball one. That once again would get the job done here with only one out. Runner on third. Padres will bring the infield in. The cheer is taken and a change up right over the heart of the plate for called strike one and one. Last night, Arizona hit four homers. Seven of the eight runs they scored came via the long hole. 47% of the runs this year from the homer. Carol fouls this one away right side into the seats one and two. So, kind of the opposite of the Padres’s in that way. But here tonight, a walk, a double, and a sack fly to create their first run of the evening. Thomas at third, one out. The infield is in. One and two on Carol. Vasquez working out of the strap. Here’s the pitch. Merryill swings, muscles it in the air to center field. Pretty deep. Merryill now jogging in a few steps. He will make the catch. Thomas tagging on his way. Jackson airs it out. Great throw, but just a little bit late. And backto back sack flies for the Diamondbacks have given them a two nothing lead. Two sack flies get the job done. Backs take a two nothing lead after a lead off walk and a double. Arizona has cashed in on those runs. Yeah, I think if you got second and third, nobody out offensively. You’re like, hey, we better score two here. And they have. Now Vasquez trying to limit it right there. First pitch to Catel Marte batting left hand. It is a fast ball strike. Nothing in one. This will be on the Padre offense to put some runs of the board of their own. Here’s the 0 and one. Marte takes in the dirt. A ball and a strike. Fell behind two nothing early yesterday. The solo homers from Mac and Suarez in the third and the fourth. And they were very much in the game, but then the grand slam by Purdomo in the fifth kind of felt like a dagger. One and one and Marte takes low. Earlier this season, down six nothing in the fifth inning. I don’t know that it would have felt like a dagger, but the way things are going offensively right now, it just did. Base is empty, two outs, two and one to Catel Marte. Here’s the pitch from Vasquez. And it is a ripped foul in the air down the right field side. That’ll find the upper deck. And now two and two to the All-Star second base. Vasquez will turn from the wind up and fire. Marte takes in the dirt. Three balls, two strikes. Berdomo, who hit the grand slam last night, is on deck and would be next if Marte reaches. Vasquez shakes off Mald Donado. Now out of the wind up, he’ll deal the 3-2 pitch. back again. Located fast right on the outside corner. Marte fouls it back and a nice play by the fan up here in the bullpin. Three and two again and Marte it’s a gra ball to the right side. Long way to go. Can’t get there and it’s into center field. A base hit. A two out single by Patel. Marte will keep the inning going. and force Randy Vasquez to use a few more pitches at least. Yeah, hard hit right through the middle. Finds the open space there and grabs himself a two out single. Like Marte before a switch hitter batting left-handed, swings at the first pitch, fouls it backstrike. Another great demand. What do they used to call them? Web gyms. Yeah. Splashing the leather up here. Go and one. And Purdomo steps into it. Sends it in the air high and deep to right center field. Nobody going to catch this one. And it is off the wall. Not a good read on the bases by Marte. He ends up being held at third base. And Perdomo into second with a double. looking at Marte as if to say, “How are you standing there?” He is, but given his soft tissue issues, being able to turn the dial up cuz there’s two outs. There’s really no reason to be doing any other thing, but clearly either not sure or not feeling well running the bases cuz there’s no doubt he should have scored with two outs. But Padres’s at least catch a break for now. Neither Merryill nor Tatis ever had a chance to catch it. You could see that it hit up against the base of the wall. And again with two outs. Whether they catch it or not is irrelevant if you’re the runner. So he’s chatting it over with Shawn Lin, the third base coach. Bommo still staring daggers at him from second base. And Ruben Neba is out to chat. Visit to the mound brought to you by The Window Depot. Offer the best prices and biggest inventory on in stock vinyl windows and interior and exterior doors. Any every one you can get is a is is a bonus. Beyond that, one of the the neat things we’ve learned the last year or so that I think surprised us both is that Purdomo is apparently that dude in their He’s the ring leader for sure. That’s who everybody in their dugout is looking to as it pertains to leadership. And Josh Naylor will get four pitches. Mike Shield won’t even mess around. Second time in this series that Naylor has been walked intentionally to load the bases for AO Suarez. Happened in the fourth inning on Tuesday. Suarez struck out. Buriel struck out after that as Nick Petta was able to work around. It’s such a good example. Well, there’s a guy with 29 homers and 75 RBI’s and you’re willing to take a shot because there are holes where he can be attacked. Big strikeout guy in addition to the big home run numbers. And he takes outside to ball one. Naylor who’s at 11 and 53. Certainly is deemed to have less holes to work with there. He’s their leading hitter. One of the top hitters in the National League. 10 to Suarez downstairs. 2 and 0. Of course, if you walk him Yeah. It kind of erases any advantage you might have had. Domo’s grand slam last night was the ninth of the season hit by the Diamondbacks more than any team in baseball. Here’s the two- pitch. Suarez grounds it foul left side and now two and one. They left the bases loaded twice in the game on Tuesday, but they cashed in that opportunity in the fifth inning last night. And now another one right here, right now. Naylor at first, Perdomo at second. Marte at third. Two nothing Arizona. Suarez is the eighth guy to bat in the inning and an ugly swing and a miss. Had a fast ball that ran way in on him. Two and two. Super bearing in on those hands and tried to stop the swing. Had gone too far. And again, the idea here is this is a guy who has struck out literally about as much as anybody in baseball the last three or so years. Two and two. The pinch and Suarez swings, pops it up. Very shallow left center. Bogarts is back. He’s got a read on it and he makes the catch to end the inning. Diamondbacks get a couple of runs on three hits. They leave them loaded and in the middle of the third inning, it’s Arizona. Take a guessing which baseball player or man said the following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something. These people cheer. We all did. I mean, it was a great game. Both teams played incredible. It was a great game. Bottom of the third. Two nothing Diamondbacks. Fernando leads off, tries to bunt his way aboard and fouls it behind home plate. Strike one. Rise and Machado to follow against lefty. Eduardo Rodriguez trying to get back on track after a really bad one in his last start against Kansas City. Pitching with the lead for the first time tonight. Diamondbacks got two against Randy Vasquez in the top of the third. Although it certainly could have been worked in his old traffic cop routine. one pitch and Tatis takes outside. One and one. They got the two runs kind of right off the bat. Walk and a double to begin the inning. Then a backto-back sack flies. Single, a double, and an intentional walk. Then loaded the bases, but they got nothing else. Pitch a Tatis. Two and one. And you know what? Marte not scoring on that double by Purdomo does show up at least for the moment as something that could matter. Two and one to Fernando and Tati swings and misses. Hit a good change up. Two and two. So with all that being said here in the bottom of the third inning, the Trustin will score is the Diamondbacks two and the Padres’s nothing. Arizona trying to take three out of four in this series. Two pitch and Fernando fouls it back. They have easy travel tonight. The Snakes will go up the road to Anaheim and finish the first half against the Angels over the weekend. Sends it in the air to deep center field. Thomas racing straight back. He is at the wall. This one going to go. Dead central for Fernando. His 16th of the year. And now a two-1 game here in the third. An absolute bullet out to center. Tried to cut her down in a way. It ends up in the middle and a laser beam. 107 off the bat. Cuts the lead in half. Trevor Story of the Red Sox is hot. 18 for his last 45. That’s a 400 average. Four home runs in his last 11 game still going. Yeah. Trevor Story has a couple really rough years figuring out on the East Coast in Boston, but has come alive here in 2025. A lot of injury stuff there. Yeah, not fun. Just because you’re playing doesn’t mean you’re 100% healthy. One and two is outside. So, story is hot. The Pirates are not. Remember, they swept the Cardinals last week. Didn’t allow a run in the entire three-game series. Since then, they have lost six straight. And of course, they were shut out all three games in Seattle right after they did that to the Cardinals. 2-2 on the ground up the middle. Long way to go. Marte, he’s got it. Throws across the body in time. What a play. I think Luis Arise saluted him as he ran across first base. That’s how good of a play it was for Patel Marte. And one out here in the third. Certainly moved well to his right on that play. Had to go down deep in the hole and the throw is pretty impressive. He got a lot on that. A great pick up on the backside by Naylor to take a hit away. Just incredible. So now Machado one out, nobody on. Padres’s down by a run here in the third inning. And he swings, sends it into the air straightaway left field. Buriel in a few long strides and he makes the catch. Two outs. Here comes the lumber brought to you by Dixie Line. Lumber and Home Setters. Fix it. Build it. Enjoy it. Gavin Sheets will be the battered an infield single off the foot of the pitcher Rodriguez. His first time. Padres’s down two to one here in the bottom of the third inning. Fernando Tatis Jr.’s 16th home run of the season has gotten them on the board. Pitch to Sheets is down and away. Ball one. Just a laser out to center for Tatis. 42 ft. One and0 to Sheets. The pitch is a good breaking ball and a called strike. One and one. Gavin hit a home run in last night’s game for the Padre. 437 ft out to right field. Oneonone pitch in the dirt. So, couple of not so cheapies the last couple of nights for the Pod. It has been noticeably warmer here the last few days as well. Those things may all be related. No doubt. Two and one and sheet swing centered in the air. Foul at the left field line now. Two and two. Seemed like for the first couple of months of the season, there were two or three occurrences a night of a guy hitting a ball that you thought was absolutely going to be a home run and then it would fall shy of the warning track. Less so the last few days. Two and two and she swings just gets a piece fouls it back. Yeah, no doubt. I mean, we’ve noticed it really across the league, but we are getting into those hot months where typically we see the home run spike. Two and two to Sheets again. Rodriguez stares in now. Out of his wind up, he deals and Sheets grounds it. Foul right side. Just you wait till that big road trip coming out of the All-Star break. Hot, hotter, hottest, right? That’s a great description of where we’re going. Washington, Miami, St. Louis. Hotter hottest. And I know there’s a roof in Miami, but plenty of two and two. Sheets lines it the other way into left field in a base hit. Two for two on the night. Continues to excel against left-handed pitching. And a man aboard for Xander Bogarts with two down here in the third inning. Knock it off, David Sheets. Fast ball up and away. They try to go up and this is just a pure stroke on top of the heater. Lines it in left field. Little two out knock for Gavin Sheets. His second of the game. Four of the five Padre hits tonight have come with two out. So the tying run aboard for Bogarts. First pitch coming and Xander takes a change up for a strike. Nothing in one. Oh, he hit a bullet to end the first inning. His last at bat. Caught by Guriel in left field. Cheats held on by Naylor. Pitch on the way and Bogard takes low. One and one. In part because of the injury situation last year. Rodriguez only started that one game against the Padre. game 161 last season. Diamondbacks had to have didn’t need it. Here’s the 1-1. It is on the outside corner and a strike and he was outstanding. But unfortunately for the Snakes, so was Randy Vasquez. And that game was scoreless into the ninth inning when the Padres’s exploded for five runs. And they all but eliminated Arizona from postseason contention that night. Not literally, but pretty much. One and two, swinging a miss. And Rodriguez strikes out his former teammate. Third K of the night. And that is it for the Pods here in the bottom of the third, but they get one on the Fernando Homer. And we’ll head to the fourth inning. 2-1 Arizona on the Padres’s Radio Network. Late night watches, duty days, hard fought missions. When you’re running on empty, there’s no room for error. San Diego’s trusted painting roofing and window company. off the end of the bat. Little weak grounder to Xander and just like that one out here in the fourth. Quick inning would certainly be nice for Vasquez with the long inning lasting. Rodriguez, meanwhile, has had three long innings pitch count. First pitch strike to McCarthy, nothing at one. And I bring that up because we’ve been telling you all week here about how bad the Arizona bullpen is, but we haven’t seen a ton of them. Swinging a miss, strike two. And if you can get Rodriguez out of there, even just one inning earlier, that puts quite a burden on some guys who have really struggled this year. Remember, FA went eight last night. Kelly went seven the night before. Gallon went six on Monday. That’s how long the series is. I only went back two games. Only forgot about the first one. Osu pitch is popped up shallow left field. Bogarts is back. Sheets is in. Bogarts will make the call on the catch. Two down. Told me these four game series messed with your mind. You know, you got the guys who have the custom cut show off the biceps. That’s I think that’s what uh Ryan’s working with here behind the behind on plate tonight. He is so built he doesn’t even wear a chest protector when he’s behind. One and two to Alec Thomas. Vasquez trying for a one, two, three inning. And a ball sprayed foul the other way. Still one and two. Alex Thomas, of course, is the football player. Great high school running back in Chicago. Signed out of high school. was going to get the opportunity to play football and baseball at TCU if he didn’t sign. Pitch outside two and two. Incredible athlete. Coming into his own defensively as a center fielder. Two outs, nobody on. Vasquez very long look in now. The two pitch and just got a piece fouled off the plate. Thomas knows a little something about weight training. not just from his football background, but his dad Allen was the longtime strength coach for the White Sox. So, he grew up around the game, got to be around those guys. Talks about meeting Jim Tomy when he was a kid and kind of being exposed to it all. Hard hit grounded the other way and Glacius can’t get there. Just kind of a hot shot under his glove as he went to the backand. Alec Thomas two for two as he puts a single the other direction and the inning will continue for the number nine hitter, Jose Herrera. I don’t know that Jose saw this off the bat. He reacted pretty late. He actually was going the other way when he first off the bat, but two out knock for Alex Thomas. Really hard hit ball. So no room for error there. And way outside off the glove of Maldonado that goes to the back stop. Thomas advances to second base. And ball one on Herrera. I think that’s the point, right? is it was hit so hard you didn’t have room to take a false step anywhere. This right here will go down as a pass ball. Just a miscatch there by Maldonado. So a guy in scoring position. Two outs. One and0 to Herrera. Vasquez deals and a rifled shot foul on a line up the right field side. One and one. getting what is a close game. We’ll see if that past fall comes back to haunt the Padre. One and one to Herrera. Vasquez delivers and it’s in the air to center field. Merryill tracking it. He’s got room. Squares it up and he makes the catch to retire the side. No runs, a hit and a man left at second base. Middle of the fourth. Let’s see if you can figure out the following baseball slang term. Today’s phrase is oppo taco. Do you know what it means? taco. A home run hit to the opposite field. Austin with anun game. Merryill Glaciius and Corner 678 coming up for the Padres’s here against the lefty Eduardo Rodriguez. Diamondbacks with a 2-1 lead. Jackson hit fifth the last couple of nights, batting sixth here tonight. This is the lowest he has hit in the batting order since last September. Just trying to get something going here. Lefty to lefty against Rodriguez and a first pitch on the way. Merryill takes low ball one. So Jackson though he struck out his first time up. Had a really good patient at bat. Spit on some pitches. Didn’t really chase anything. Just unable to connect when he got to two strikes. One and0. And he takes inside again. Two balls. No strike. It’s interesting because Rodriguez really has an attempt to use the top of his own. We’ve seen him use it on other hitters, just not Jackson to this point, but they are trying to stay in on him. Here’s the two and0 and Merrill takes low. Ball three. Really focused on the inner half of the plate with Jackson. And Rodriguez has fallen behind 300. From the third base side of the rubber, Rodriguez deals and Merrill flinches takes on the inside corner. That’s a strike three and one. trying to crowd him, not trying to let Jackson get any extension at all. Now the 3-1 pitch. Arrol swings and misses it. A good change up. So from 3 and 0 to 3 and two. First pitch he’s chased really out of his own. Moves the count to 3-2. And it is a good change up from Rodriguez. Here’s the payoff and Jackson takes inside ball four. First walk of the night issued by Rodriguez and Jackson Merrill is aboard representing the potential tie run to lead off in the bottom of the fourth inning. You see his frustration even in the walk. I’m guessing the frustration goes from swinging at the previous pitch to move it to 3-2, but nonetheless able to lay off the 3-2 pitch to draw the walk. When he made that home run robbing catch the other night, he talked about, you know, really just wanting to help win a game any way possible. He can do that with his legs, too. Here’s a Glacius. He takes a strike and we’ll see if Jackson in a one-run game here perhaps tries to put himself in scoring position. Great point. We were talking about Sander Bogart’s kind of talking about what it’s like to go through a slump. That is a probably the number one feeling you have is that you’re letting your team down, that you’re not doing anything to help. Glacius breaks his bat, ears it into left field. That’s down to the base hit. Merrell going to try and go first to third. Curielle will not make a throw. Right in his face. And Jackson does use his wheels to advance an extra 90. And now the Padres’s down by one. Have runners on the corners and nobody out. Just finish talking about it. Other ways to help. Base running is one of them. Great read off the bat. No hesitation from Jackson Merrill. He goes first to third. And his read was so good, Curio didn’t even pick his head up to look at third. got it to second base. Padres’s cooking here in the fourth. Padres’s in this series one for 13 with a runner in scoring position. But this is about as good of an opportunity as you can get. First and third, nobody out. Cronorth to first. Naylor has it, drops it, picks it up, steps on first. Merryill will score and the game is tied. RBI ground out. Jake Croninworth here in the bottom of the fourth inning. And the Pods have a Glaciius at second base representing the go-ahead. Nice play by Naylor to knock it down. This ball could have been headed down that line for extra bases, but Naylor knocks it down. Not able to get not a didn’t have a play at home or second, so he steps on the bag, gets the force. Padres’s tie this game up at two. Got what they needed now. Looking for some more. Maldonado, the batter with the glacius at second. One away. First pitch coming. Martine takes and a slider on the outside edge. Nothing at one. Aldonado fouled Naylor to end the second inning. Tatis on deck hit a home run last 01 and a check swinging a ball up and in. They appeal he didn’t go and the cat is even at a ball and a strike. So the Padres’s have come back to tie the game 22 here in the fourth inning. One ball and one strike to count on Maldonado. A look back at a Glacius now the pitch and a late swing and a miss and a fast ball. One and two. Tatis lurking on deck already has the solo shot in his last AB. One and two to Maldonado the pitch and Martine kind of fisted in the air right side. Naylor goes back makes the catch. Second out of the inning is still at second base and here comes Tatis. He took a cutter down but middle and just hit a laser beam off the low wall behind the center four wall. You know what else I noticed? Early in the year a lot of two hand finishes. That particular one was the one hand. probably see more two-hand finishes nowadays versus what we saw from Totty when he first came up. Hatcher Herrera was just out there visiting with Rodriguez. Obviously, they got a base open, eyes on deck. Fernando took him out last inning. You got to figure they were discussing how exactly they wanted to attack Tatis. How careful they wanted to be with Tatis. Two-2 game at Glacius at second. Two out. A look at second. Now the pitch and Fernando takes inside. Ball one. Batis flew to deep left field in the first inning and hit a 420t home run in the third inning. So twice tonight he’s hit Rodriguez well. 80th pitch of the night for the Arizona left-hander about to be delivered. And Tatis lifts up the hands, takes inside. Two and0. himself in an aggressive count here. It’s either going to be a change up or a cutter coming from Rodriguez here. Two balls and no strikes that count. Here’s the pitch on the way and Fernando takes in the dirt ball three. I wonder if he’s going to see anything. He will not. They will intentionally walk him and that puts a couple of guys on for Luis Arise as we pause 10 seconds for station identification on the Padres’s radio network. KWFN and KWFN HD1 San Diego. Hi, this is Michael King. The Padres’s play here on San Diego’s number one station 973. The fans and Bon Sports Station with Tony Gwyn Jr. and our producer engineer Dave Marcus. I’m Jesse Agler. Two on, two out, two game, fourth inning. Luis Sai stands in 0 for two on the night against lefty Eduardo Rodriguez. The first pitch of this at bat is outside in low ball one. So interesting the previous inning the Padres’s walked the guy that had less holes to face the guy who had more. They go the opposite way here. Totty swinging the bat better probably a few more holes than a rise. And this is the poison that the Diamondbacks have chosen. The left fielder, Guriel, by the way, is about as shallow as you will ever see a left fielder in a big league game. Tatis at first, Eglacius at second. Two down. Tie game fourth inning. One and0. Here’s the pit. And Arise swings, pops it up. Shallow left center field. What do you know? Thomas coming on. He’ll make the call. And the center fielder makes the catch to retire the side. Padres’s get a run on a hit. They leave two guys and after four innings a two- two game. Let’s see if we can figure out the following baseball slang term. Today’s phrase is oppo taco. You know what it means? taco. A home run hit to the opposite field. Austin with an oppo taco. His 13th. It’s a one-run game. Gel Marte on deck and Heraldo Purdomo after that. Today’s question of the day is brought to you by Kaiser Permanente. Auto pitch is a strike. If you have questions about your health, visit kp.org/ San Diego. Kaiser Permanente for all that is you. Louie in Miraa sends in tonight’s question. One pitch popped up behind second base. Bogard’s back onto the outfield grass. He’ll call everybody off and while backpedaling make the play. One out here in the top of the fifth inning. And uh Louis says, “With the ABS challenge system coming to the All-Star game on Tuesday, I wonder if you guys think that the challenge system is better than having all the calls automated.” This is uh one of those things MLB has gone back and forth on a bunch in the last several seasons. Whether to have the thing fully automated, we’ve got the technology to do so theoretically, or to put in the two challenge per game per side system. Marte takes the strikes. I I’m convinced after watching the challenge system and spring training that that’s the way to go. I think it still allows for the really good good umpires that we already have to still be a part of this game. And it doesn’t, you know, that could get out of hand having every pitch. One and one is sliced the other way and into the gap down for a base hit. Marte on his horse. He’ll get to second base pretty easily as Merryill Strobe comes in and a one out double here in the fifth inning for Patel Marte. If uh yeah, if you like ponderous baseball, then you would want the all automated system. And and I know that sounds glib, but I think that’s the reality. If you had every pitch automated, the games would be tough. They would from a from a fan standpoint, they would be tough. The game would go along just fine, but it would be less intrigue, I think, from the fans if every call was automated. I think you’d also see a lot more walks for sure. And nobody wants that. I mean, that’s part of the issue. Now, takes low ball one, one of the three true outcomes. And yes, if it’s precise, that’s exactly what would happen. You know, veteran pitchers, the elite guys, Max Sherzer has been very vocal about, you know, his opinion and not wanting it. 10 is low ball, too. And, you know, Sherzer says there’s some interplay there, you know, between the pitcher and the umpire. And, hey, if I show you I can put this right where I want it, you know, I want to get that call even if it maybe is a little bit off. And you can argue the merits of that, but that’s the when people say the human element, that’s part of what they’re saying. Ball in the dirt, three and 0. And so if you put in the challenge system, you’re not totally getting rid of that necessarily. But if there’s a big call in a big moment and you think, you know, you got a raw deal, you have the opportunity to to try and get that change, right? And if it’s the and there’s none of that kind of give and take with the umpire, that naturally happens anyway, right? the umpire will miss a call and he’ll give one back that ultimately a lot of times come close to even out on most days. Now the uh fascinating thing will be because we saw this in the minors the last couple years. Who are the guys who are not allowed to challenge and there will be guys on every team who are going to be told hey uh you do not have the perfect your percentage is too bad we can’t have it. Reno Purdomo is on the outside corner but called the ball. So, two on and one out. That is the fourth walk issued by Randy Vasquez. One intentional and that might be his night. Andre had a doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Mike Schult is on his way out. It’ll be an early exit here for Randy Vasquez. Four and a third inning. And he departs in a two-2 game, but the Diamondbacks with runners on first and second, one out. And Josh Naylor coming up. This is the Padres’s Radio Network. Hey San Diego, it’s Woodsy. It It could very well be done in the first. Oh, and two to Naylor. picks and fires and misses a little bit off the plate outside. The system, by the way, for those who don’t know, we should explain it. It’s it’s an automatic strike zone, but not every pitch is called automatically. Each team gets two challenges, but if you win the challenge, you don’t lose it. So, you could theoretically challenge an infinite number of pitches if you keep getting your challenge right. Here’s the one and two and Naylor grounds a foul. But the challenges can only come from the pitcher, the catcher, and the hitter. And they have to be immediate, not from the dugout. No signal, nothing like that. And uh what we learned during spring training is that most teams told their pitchers, “You’re not allowed.” captures handle it on the defensive side and the hitters obviously do their thing. Very wise by all the managers. One of two. Baylor takes right at the bottom of the zone. Strike proof call. Perfectly placed fast ball at 99 miles an hour. Then he walked Croninworth. somehow gotten himself out of that. But Mario making his 30th big league appearance of the year has certainly had some command issues. First pitch swinging though and Bogarts pops it in the air foul up the right field line and into the seats. Comes down in the 19th row couple of sections beyond the Padre dugout and that is strike one. Lander has hit in all three games of this series as well as the last one against the Rangers on Sunday. 0 for two so far tonight. Pitch on the way and Bogard sits it hard to the ground. F up the third baseline. That’ll roll all the way into the corner. Deets is on his horse. He’s at third. He’s going to be waved. Here comes the relay to the plate. Not in time. RBI double. Xander Bogarts. And the Padre lead is now 4-2. Padres’s offense tonight showing some life. Tried to come in with the change up. should say tried to stay away but it leaked in and Bogey keeps it fair just down the third baseline because Uriel was playing so far the opposite way he had a long way to go that allowed Gavin sheets to score from first Padres’s had another run they’re up 4-2 told you the Diamondback bullpen has been decimated by injury and the guys they got are not that good swings and misses strike one and elevated people the problem is they got only one inning that they had to use a reliever on Tuesday. Only one inning they had to rel use a reliever in last night’s game. It’ll be a different story here tonight after the Padres’s got rid of Rodriguez in the fifth inning. Here’s the 0 and one. Harold takes way high and a ball in a strike. Two consecutive hits to start this inning. Padres’s threatening for more. Bogard sat second and yes, still nobody out. Homer, single, double. They had a two-run lead. Here’s the one and one though. Let’s step on it. Bart’s going to scampers back this second. So, the uh soft underbelly of the Arizona pitching staff going to be exposed here. Hard hit liner foul right side. One and two now on taking advantage already and again looking for much more. Already up over that three-run mark that we talked about earlier. Yeah, four has been the magic number this year. It has. Here’s the one and two. Merryill takes up and away. Two balls and two strikes. This season when the Padres score four or more runs they are 33 and 13. Well, they don’t. They’re 13 and 30. We’re 16 and 30. So, I mean, there you go. Here’s the two and two. Now, for real will kick and fire and Merryill fights it off and fouls it. There’s a hunter up above the zone in and he got to it. I think he got to it the right way. Able to foul it off. Continue the AB. Padres’s have alternated wins and losses every day they have played this month. They want to keep that pattern going at least here tonight. Two and two. Harold takes outside ball three. Diamondbacks meanwhile are remarkably consistent in being about a 500 team. They’re 46 and 47. How about this? Arizona are exactly 500 in their last two games, their last four games, their last six games. R2 is high ball for Mel walks for the second time tonight. Two on and nobody out with Jose Glaciius coming up. The Diamondbacks have evenly split their last 10 games, their last 20 games, their last 30 games, and even their last 40 games, their 20th. That’s remarkable. That is the definition of 500. a team that is so talented offensively, but as we’ve mentioned, the bullpin specifically has been a bit of a problem. They’ve had some underperforming starters. That hasn’t helped. Despite what you saw the last couple of nights, trust me, they have. Here’s a Glacius. They expect a bunt. He takes and a fast ball strike down the middle. Already with four extra base hits in this game, looking to add more. Both Tatis and Machado have homered. Generally, if both of those guys do it, things are going well. Hole in one to a Glacius with two on and nobody out. Here’s the pit and Jose steps back, takes a fast ball way high. One and one. Merrell’s walk twice now. A Glacius has a single of his own. Croninorth has a single. Those are all guys 678 bottom of the lineup. Certainly gives you an opportunity to turn it over to the guys at the top and they’ve done some damage. Mario’s struggles continuing. Woodford is now throwing in the Arizona bullpen. One and one. Eacius fouls it back strike two. Jose won out of two tonight. He singled his last time up. It was all part of the uh runscoring rally if you will against Rodriguez last inning. It led to the Padres’s tying the game at two. They’ve gone ahead here in the fifth and an opportunity for much more. Pitch to a Glacius. Grounded his shortstop. Rodello has it. Flipped to second one. Marte’s turn just in time to get a glacier. So a double play and now two outs with Bogarts at third base and Jakewood coming up. Leo needed that in the worst way. The slider induces the ground ball and we’re able to turn the 643 double play. Bogart moves up to third. There is a reason they call it a pitcher’s best friend. Ronorth a productive night already tonight. First pitch is underneath the hands. Ball one. Jake Singled in the second. Had the RBI ground out last inning that tied the game. Now it is 42 Padres’s with a runner on third. Two outs here in the fifth inning. 10. And Jake takes downstairs. Two balls and no strength. Mario dangles the right arm. Now he comes set looking at Bogarts who leads down the line in foul territory and the two a pitch is a fast ball strike at the knees. Two and one to Cronin Padres’s now four runs on nine hits. Diamond backs two runs on five hits against Vasquez and Moraton who it appears will come out to begin the next inning. Two and one the pitch and Jake swings and misses. Went after a 99 mph heater. Looks like he wanted to change his mind maybe 3/4 of the way through but two. Yeah. Pitch was up above the zone and I think as Jesse said by the time Cone realized it was too late. Count moves to 22. Rio said and ready the two- two pitch and Cornerworth takes way away at 99 miles an hour. That’s ball three and now for him. Orio set and ready. Now the payoff pitch. Cronorth takes and on the inside corner strike three called borderline pitch and it went Morio’s way. Jake not happy has some parting words for Blakey the home plate umpire who does not want to hear it. Padres’s though two runs on three hits they leave a man at third base and after five innings. It’s the Padres’s four in the Diamondbacks two on the Padres’s radio network. Moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. Smith courts one right down the line. It may go. We love our Petco Park bathroom listeners, maybe more than any of our listeners. Not to pick favorites, but they’re the most loyal. They never turn it off. But McCarthy takes his turn. And and from what I understand, the acoustics are tremendous. Booming. One out, nobody on. Oh, and one to McCarthy. Lefty to lefty. fires and a little looper that’ll drop down into left field at base hit. One out base runner for the Snakes here in the sixth inning. Alec Thomas will be the batter. But they got a lot of pesky little fast guys they can throw at they do. That sinker all in the kitchen of Jake McCarthy, but just kind of muscles it out from the left field for a single pinch hitter here. Yeah. So, one of the uh pesky fast guys is not going to come to bat. They’re going to use Randle Gridic to hit for Alec Thomas who’s two for two tonight. Hang with him right there. Yeah, I mean I understand if you’re looking for maybe a home run here, one swing, tie the game sort of situation, but my gut would say, you know, Thomas remember a scratch the other day with the knee that might flared up. Certainly though in this spot, you’re only down two. Maybe you feel like this is one of your best shots, but that’s again a stretch considering how well offensively the Diamondbacks have played. And look, Thomas is capable of hitting the ball well. Not really against lefties, I guess, which is the idea here. Yeah. Know, I I mean, I guess they’re just taking their shot. So, it’s aggressive, but it it’s kind of one of those games. You get the sense both teams really going for it. So it’ll be Gritic hitting against more at home. Not a ton of difference in his splits terms of righty lefty. Gritic two for five against him, but he struck out three times. I don’t know. Runner on first, one out, and first pitch in the dirt. Kind of knocked down by Maldonado. One and0. Britic dhed the second game of the series and was 0 for four with two strikeouts. Hitting .229, five homers, 18 runs batted in. been around seemingly forever. Debbuted with the Cardinals back in 2014. Really nice major league play. Yeah. One and0 and Critic takes high. Two balls, no swing. I think he’s excelled in this particular role, too. That would uh in my opinion then make him an interesting guy at the trade deadline. Yep. No doubt. Right-handed bat. Play both corner spots. Two and0 to Gritic with McCarthy at first, one out. Padres’s by two and a fast ball high. 3 and 0. Jeremiah Estrada is readying himself in the Padre bullpen. Padres’s are about to go through the gauntlet this weekend by the way. Ranger Suarez tomorrow for the Phillies. Zack Wheeler on Saturday and the ground ball machine Christopher Sanchez on Sunday. Rio is outside ball four. So, a rare Adrien Morajon walk and now two on and one out. The number nine hitter, the switch it catcher, Jose Herrera will come up to that right hand and he’s got uh has a little bit of a runway here. Another righty here. We’ve got Carol behind that and then the switch hitting Marte and the switch hitting Purdomo to follow. So, he’ll be given an opportunity to get out of this jam. Ruben Neba is going to head out there and the Padre pitching coach will try and assist him in doing so. First pitch on the way and Herrera batting right-handed for the first time tonight. Takes a fast ball strike on the inside part of the plate. nothing in one. Despite the fact that Herrera is a catcher, he has grounded into only one double play distance. 01 pitch and right on the inside corner. No, little bit in and a ball. One and one. I don’t know. Battling some command issues a little bit. Uncharacteristic. Yeah, he can behind the command here. One-1 count. Runner from second takes off and delayed from first. The throw goes to second and in time. So Bridget got a late read on the double steel and the Padres’s take full advantage. McCarthy at third now with two outs. Great IQ from Malden Island. There was no hesitation at all. He knew exactly where he was going through a dime down to second base. Richard cut down. Padres’s get the second out of the inning. Big out. Huge. Two and one to Herrera with McCarthy at third base. Here’s the pitch and Herrera fouls it away. Two and two. Was your read what my read was that he just he didn’t notice in time and he didn’t get going in time? He didn’t take the amount of space that he was being given with Arise off the bag. And yes, typically the guy who is trailing always is going to get a later jump, which is why you want to get a bigger lead. Two and two is outside ball three. Usually it’s, you know, that 1,000 and he realizes what’s happening and he goes, but it felt longer there. Now kind of gifted this opportunity to get the nine guy and not have to deal with Carol with guys on base. Three and two the pitch and Herrera takes on the inside quarter strike three call. Of course, with a left-handed hitter, the shorts stop is the one that vacates, which leaves that whole area open. If he is able to stay back a little bit longer, hit it that way. He has an easy knock, but instead moves up tidy to second base. So, a guy in scoring position for Machado. First pitch, Manny takes. And a strike at the top of the zone. Nothing one. Manny homerred last inning to put the Padres’s ahead three to two. Also doubled in the first. Looking for some insurance here in the bottom of the sixth. Here’s the 01 way outside. Tatis started then stopped. They try a pickoff throw at second, goes off the glove of Marte, trickles out in the shallow right. Fernando is at third. He’ll stop there as Predomo goes to pick it up and walk it back in. Don’t know who they’re going to give this error to. It could be to Marte, but it’ll likely be on the pitcher. Marte very frustrated with himself. He spit his gum out and swatted it away with his glove. No, it’s a ball he should have had. It wasn’t a perfect throw, but certainly a throw he should handle. Instead, it moves Toddy up 90 ft. See if that matters with two outs. Any ball in the dirt, you better believe it’ll matter. On and on to Machado. Here’s the pick. Manny swings, pops it up. Two balls and no strikes. Adam worked the eighth inning. Gave the one- nothing win on Tuesday night. Got some help from Fernando Tatis Jr. who robbed the home run from Naylor that could have tied the game. Duo pitch is hit into right field and a base hit for Corbin Carroll to begin the seventh. He’s got to deal with another Allstar Catel Mart. Yep. Jason fell behind there two and had to come with the fast ball all over it. Laces it in right for a leadoff knock. He did not face either one of these guys on Tuesday, so no free looks the other day. But obviously all dangerous hitters. Marte stands in two for three with a single and a double. His single in the third inning. Don’t forget about it. Pitch high one and0. Remember with two outs. The next guy up, Ronaldo Purdomo doubled to the gap in right center field. And Marte stunningly did not come in to score. And that would have made it three nothing Diamondbacks in the third. And instead Randy Vasquez got out of that jam. Here’s the one and0 and Marte a check swing foul one and one. Now we’ve talked about his leg issues and uh all the different things he’s been dealing with. So if that’s why he didn’t score then okay that’s fair play. But if he just didn’t get a good read on it or wasn’t running as hard as he could have. Yeah there’s that could be huge. You don’t need a read with two outs. You you’re just running on contact and that’s what the only thing that makes me think it has to do. Runner goes. Pitch is low. No throw from Martine Maldonado and Corbin Carroll steals his 11th bag of the year. That was easy work for Corbin Carroll. Thought Maldonado did the right thing just holding on to it. And that wasn’t even really one of those kind of momentum leads that we see Corbin Carroll use. That was just a straight steel, the oldfashioned one. He is quite fast. Yes. Switch up. Marte batting left-handed. The two-1 from Adam is waved at AD. There’s that great chamber. Now moves to 2-2 like what Jason Adam did there. He he held forced Corbin Carroll to stop his momentum. Two and two to Marte and he swings, pops it up right side of the infield. Cronorth will call for it. Just back onto the grass. And he makes a two-handed catch for the first out of the inning. Top of the seventh. The Trustin will score. Padres’s four and a Diamondbacks two. Arizona though has Heraldo Purdomo coming to the plate representing the potential tying run at the grand slam in the fifth inning last settles into the left-handed batters box. One out of two with a double and a walk. Harold at second, one out. and a pickoff at second. Or Adam at least will turn around and watch him go back. Bogards didn’t go to cover the base. So Adam didn’t make a either way. Reminder to Carol that he’s being thought of. Now the first pitch and Purdom leans back but takes a slide for a strike on the inside edge. Nothing and one. This game has looked and felt a lot more like most of the games between these teams the last couple years. Oh, one pitch right down the middle and a called strike. I think coming into this series, the Padres’s and Diamondbacks had evenly split the last 16 games they had played against one another. And both teams had averaged about six runs per game headtohead. I know it’s only four to two here in the seventh, but this is more that way than the last couple of games. All those games have been back and forth. 0 and two and Purdomo hits it on the ground of first over the bag. Diving attempt to rise. Couldn’t get there. It’s into right field. That’ll get a run home as Carol trots in and up to second base with his second double of the night. Heraldo Purdomo. This is a one-run game in the top of the seventh. And that’s with two strikes, too. Just a good piece of hitting. Jason Adam for the first time really ahead any of these batters. doesn’t get the change up down enough and Perdomo able to yank it just over the bag. RBI double for Purdomo. That RBI he didn’t get earlier. He gets it then. 65th of the season. Now it’ll be Josh Naylor with a tying run at second base, one out. First pitch on the way and Naylor takes up and away. Ball one. Remember Tuesday night, Naylor against Adam in the eighth inning. Fernando robbed of the home run. And right with good wheels at second base. 4-3 Padres’s here in the top of the seven. Pitches away two and0. Suarez working on deck. Only one out here for the Padres’s. in the seventh. And they won’t mess around with Naylor. Once again, they put him on. Second time tonight, third time in the series, they’re intentionally walking Josh Naylor and he looks legitimately peeved about. Shoots a look out to Adam who I think said something to him like, “Hey, what do you want from me?” He also had said something to Maldonado at the plate and they had a shot on TV. You can kind of read Maldonado’s lips going, “Come on.” Yeah, that’s I get it. You want to hit, but this is what they do to good players in the league. They don’t waste their time. They tried to get you to offer at something off the plate. You didn’t. So, you know what? Take your pace, man. We’re not going to mess around with you. It has worked out both previous times having to face Suarez in these situations. On Tuesday night, in the fourth inning, he struck out against Pvetta. That was with the bases loaded after the intentional walk. Then earlier tonight, he popped out to end the third inning after the intentional. Two on and one away. Padres’s with a 4-3 lead, but the Diamondbacks are obviously threatening. Warz has grounded in his six double plays so far this year. It’s a healthy amount, although Naylor with a dozen. is far and away the team leader. So, three for five in his career against Jason Adam. That includes a base hit in the eighth inning on Tuesday night. Two on and one out here in the top of the seventh inning. Adam ready. First pitch on the way and Suarez swings, pops it up. Foul out of play. Strike one. Aldonado and the infielders went out to visit with Adam and Ruben Diablo a moment ago. That was the last Padre Mound visit and it’s only the seventh inning. Just keep that in mind. 0 and one the pitch and Suarez swings, grounds it. Foul at third base, nothing at two. Padres’s ahead four to three. Here’s the O2 pitch. Suarez just gets a piece, knocks it foul behind home plate. Check out upcoming theme games including Hello Kitty Day, Harry Potter Day, and more. It’s a crazy collection. Oh, and two to Suarez and the pitch is swung on. Sending the air to center field deep. Harold is back. It is playable. He’ll make the catch right in front of the warning track with tagging second to third. He will advance. And now with two away here in the seventh, diamond backs have runners on the corners for Lordis Buriel Jr. has been a thorn this series as well. Jason will have a chance to get out of this inning unscathed. Suarez did not miss by much though, but he missed. 4-3 Padres. Naylor at first. Perdomo at third. Two down for Geria. Lind is center against Adam the other night and he takes inside. That one nearly clipped him. One ball in. No strike. Belle 0 for six in his career against Jason Adam with three strikeouts. So certainly a matchup they like though Estrada is throwing if he can’t get him. Here’s the one and0 and a swing and a miss. Buriel tonight 0 for three. Flew out to deep left field his last time up. Je made a nice play on it. Taylor held on by a rise at first base. Peromo leading down the line at third. One and one to Guriel. Here’s the pitch from Adam. It is in the dirt. Knocked down by Mald Donado. And now two and one. Nothing has come particularly easy tonight on the mound for the Padres, but to this point they have held the Diamondbacks relatively intent. Plenty of baseball left. Two and one. The pitch on the way and Gel takes a little bit inside. Three balls at a strike. And once again, a little bit of an issue for Jason Adam. There is only so much you can ask of a man. And uh yeah, Padres’s have run him out there an awful lot this season. This is his 46th appearance of the year. Game 92. So that’s Yeah, literally. At one point he was over half. Going to try to battle back here. Down 3-1 this count to Guriel Jr. pitch on the way and Guriel out in front and misses it with a slider strike too by the way of bad. This is game 93 but nonetheless it’s the one thing that I think Austin always can save Jason is his ability to throw his off speed for strikes. 3-1 throws a great slider there moves the count to 3-2. Naylor will be on the move. Arrives backs up to play behind him at first base. Here is the 3-2 pitch. Guriel swings, hooks hit foul down the left field line. We do it again. Adam now up over 20 pitches as uh he has been made to work not at his sharpest here tonight. One job though and that is to keep this thing right where it’s at. He’s given up the one run trying to limit the damage. Three and two again to Guriel. Naylor will take off from first base and the pitch is grounded to third base. A Glacius backs up on it. He’s got it long for the first is perfect and in time to end the inning. Diamondbacks get a run on two hits. They leave two guys on base and we’ll stretch it. Petco Park now a one-run game. Moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. Smith courts one in right down the line. It may go. Go crazy, folks. Go crazy. Harold walking three times in a game for only the second time in his career. The other time was eight days ago in Philadelphia. Woodford been a little bit all over the place. And now the two Glacia swing sits another ground through the left side. That’s a base hit. Deing third to be held as Buriel sends it home. First hit of the inning, but the Padres’s now have the bases loaded. One out for Jake Cronin. Padres’s continue to move the line. Couple of walks, a single to load the bases for Jake Cronin. Got the slider or sweeper in the middle of the plate. Shoots it through the five hole. Brian Kaplan, the Arizona pitching coach, is coming out to chat and try and help Woodford out a little bit here. Still don’t think there’s anybody throwing in the diamond back bullpen. So this is uh his moment here. Ronorth tonight one out of three with a single and an RBI ground up. Padres’s have a 43 lead, but they also have the sacks full with only one down. Opportunity to get a little bit of breathing room. Padres’s with a one-run lead. And looks like Bryce Johnson will come in and pinch run for Gavin Sheets. This could play well for the Padres’s on an infield in situation or perhaps a short sack fly situation. Johnson will presumably stay into play left field for cheats and Glacius at first, Merryill at second, Johnson at third for Cronin North who is three for five in his career against Jake Woodford. Padres’s trying to add to this one lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Diamondbacks have hit more grand slams this year than any team in baseball. Padres’s have yet to hit one. trying to change that perhaps as Cottoorth swings and misses and a first pitch change up. Indeed, he was change up middle a little bit out in front. Now moves the 01. I get that a base hit gives you a two here, but you know, first pitch. Absolutely. Take your shot. Oh, and one and fouls it back. Strike two. First pitch, take your shot. You swung through it. You foul the second pitch off. Now we start to get in to just battle mode. We know you need some outfield grass in order to get this run in. Runners leaded all three bases with one out here in the bottom of the seventh inning. Oh, and through the toron Woodford will come set. Holds the ball in the glove right at his belly. Now the pick and Jake Lynches takes down and away. Nasty change up. Able to lay off and the count goes to one and two. Martine Maldonado is standing on deck. Obviously, the Padres’s have the opportunity to perhaps pinch hit for him if Croner does not bring in a run or two or three or four. Pitch is swung on and missed. Strike three. So, Chron strikes out with the bases loaded. And now two outs. And indeed Trenson Brooks will pop out of the dugout and hit from Odonado. One of those situations just got outside yourself. Got a good pitch to hit on the change up. Fast ball up that looked like it was in the zone. Laid off the change up and then a one two change up in off the plate below the zone and throw chases out number two. Brooks really is the uh available pump that the Padres’s have on the bench. Leas Diaz has four home runs. That’s more than Brooks, but Brooks is kind of a a pure punch guy. Bryce Johnson being used as a pinch runner. Tyler Wade, the only other guy available on the bench for Mike Shield and Wade has never hit home run in the Padre. So, this is kind of the obvious card to play if you’re shield with the current construction of the 26-man roster. Bases loaded, two outs. Tatis is on deck and Trenton Brooks will pinch it from Amaldinado against Jake Woodford. Padres’s a 4-3 lead. Desperately trying to add on. Woodford is set. First pitch coming and the left-hand batter leans back from a cutter that ran a little bit up and in. Ball one. Brooks five out of 32 in 18 games so far. He does have a homer and a couple of doubles. The home run came at Dodger Stadium last month and was the first of his major league career. Base is loaded, two outs. Here’s the one and0. Brook swings, hits it on the ground up the middle. Cordomo scoops to his right. Little flip to Marte at second base. They force a Glacius and that will end the inn. No runs a hit. Padres’s leave them loaded and we go to the eighth at Petco Park. It’s it take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager says the following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something. These people cheer. We all did. As Padre fans, we know what makes a great team. That’s why I choose the friendly pros of Petco as my home team for my pets food, vet care, grooming, and more. Petco, official pet partner of the San Diego Padres’s. Top of the eighth inning, Jake McCarthy will lead off against the new Padre pitcher, Jeremiah Estrada. Face over for Jason Adam, who allowed a run on two hits lasting and had to throw 24 pitches to get three Emmer edge. and Estraana will try and keep it right where it’s at against 79 McCarthy Gritic and Heruric. Left-handed batter is in. First pitch on the way and a fast strike top of the zone. Pitching change brought to you by Sid’s Carpet Barn. Sids Carpet Barn stands alone as San Diego’s floor covering leader. From a huge selection of premium high-end choices to quality budget friendly options, Sids has you covered. Oh, and one from Estrada to McCarthy and a foul ball back over the net behind home plate. It’s nothing and two. Productive night for McCarthy. He has singled, walked, stolen a base, and scored a run. Began the night in right field. Slid to center after Grick hit for Thomas. And Gritick now on deck. No balls, two strike pitch on the way and upstairs at 97 miles an hour. The count is one and two. A game that has been managed, I would say, with great urgency by both skippers. One and two. And McCarthy hits it on the ground behind Estrada. Boggards has it just to the right of the bag at second and they’ll throw to first in time to get a speedy runner. One out here in the top of the eighth. Very different reasons, right? I mean, Arizona very well could be playing to keep their team together. Padres’s trying to get a victory for a tough series coming up starting tomorrow. Diamondback free agents to be include a Yuanio Suarez, Josh Maylor, Zack Galla, Mel Kelly. got some I mean pieces that a lot of teams would covet if they fall out. Richie takes on the inside corner strike one. I understand the inclination to to not want to bring up the band offensively, right? But if you step back and you take a really cold look at their team overall and the division that they’re in, I don’t know, especially with the Giants playing the way they have only complicated matters for the Diamondbacks. All up one and oneonone. That was kind of the X factor, right? Kind of expected the Padres’s to be in playoff position. Certainly the Dodgers. Giants could have gone either way and so far it’s going that way. One and one to Gritic Estrada deals and that’s popped up foul towards Don and Mge in front of the B. One and two. Easy for me to say, but if I’m the Diamondbacks, I’m moving some pieces. I mean, unless they win, you know, 20 of the next 20. So, thing that makes it more complicated is the run they went on last year. Gripic swings. Yes. Pops it up now. Ground towards the on deck area, left side. Diaz is there and falling over. He’s able to make the catch. Two outs here in the top of the eighth inning. Little dicey, but he gets it done. Got all the way back towards that netting. kind of took a peek, knew where he was, had to kind of shuffle to his right, but at the end of the day, made the catch. Now, the Diamondback catcher, Jose Herrera, will flip around to hit left-handed. Yeah, this probably would be an easier decision for the Diamondbacks had they not did did what they did last year in the second half where they seem left for dead and made a run. Herrera takes outside. There’s no doubt. Now you look at last year and what turned around for them was Corbin Carroll turned back into himself. They had the pitching I I just I don’t know that you can expect the pitching to get better this year. I mean, given that it’s one of the main cogs that’s struggled is Zack Gallon. Pitch side. I would liken him in the same cloth as Corbin Carroll on the pitching side. What about the bullpen? That’s the there there lies the bigger issue to me is the bullpen. Like if they’re going to add, they got to go out and get three really good relief, right? Pitches low three and0. But hey, if that’s if that’s the track they want to take, and that’s the thing. I don’t I don’t Is their system stocked enough to go out and get because otherwise you’re giving up big league talent that they’re going to absolutely need. Marino to Herrera with Corbin Carroll waiting next. The fast ball strike two and one. Again, very easy for us to say. Run backs are like the National League version of of the Red Sox. Three and one on the ground of the right side and into right field. A base hit. Keep the inning going here for Corbin Carroll. Diamondbacks with a tying run on base. Two outs in the top of the eighth inning. The two out two out knock keeps the line moving for a very dangerous Corbin Carroll as looks like the Diamondbacks will pinch run like Bla1 Alexander born to be a pinch runner first name like that he will not stay A catch by the rebound for Carrera. Speed aboard. Potential tying run is over there. Carol, a left-handed batter waiting on Estrada. Alexander big lead not going. And Carol has his knees buckled by a good splitter but called a ball. One and0. Alexander has spent most of the year Reno 11 out of 12 stealing bases at Triple A. stole a base as a pinch runner in the eighth inning on Tuesday. Perhaps trying to do the same tonight. One and0 to Carol not running and a swing and a miss. Slider for Estrada has been patently ridiculous as of late. Yeah, that end the split. Both of his secondary pitches in recent outings have been, I think, as nasty as we’ve seen it. One and one to Carol. Alexander not running and downstairs two balls in a strike. Splitter slider splitter. Two and one to Carol. There goes Alexander swinging a miss. The throw down is well wide into center field. Alexander on his way to third. Merryill will not make a throw there. Stolen base and an error has put the potential tying run 90 ft away. The jump is what caused the air and throw. Blaze Alexander got a great jump on that. Diaz left trying to kind of make up the ground and unleashes the throw into the outfield. So Alexander at third with two outs with the count two and two on Corbing Ferrell. Estrada trying to keep this game four to three and handed over to Robert Suarez in the ninth. Carol waiting two and two. Here’s the pitch and it’s taken right down the middle. Strike three call locked him up and the Diamondbacks lead the tying run 90 ft away. Padres will try and add on as we go to the bottom of the eighth at top of the order coming up. 43 San Diego on the Padres’s radio network. Yes, he did. robbed a home run from Fernando Tatis Jr. So after Marilyn Tatis robbed homers a couple of nights ago, center fielder Jake McCarthy goes back, takes one away from Fernando here in the eighth inning tonight. One away. Revenge is a dish best served cold. And this was cold by Jake McCarthy. Brings back a homer. Keeps the lead right at one. Terrific play by Jake McCarthy. Would have been Fernando’s second home run of the night. Now Arise takes a strike right down the middle. Nothing at one. Fernando’s had one two homer game this year. That was all the way back in mid April against the Cub. Here’s the 0 and one and a rise inside out the other way. Guriel was shallow. Oh, he’s got to go back into his right, but he reaches up to make the catch. Two down. Time for our next game preview. But a reminder, the party starts before the game on the coaster train. Third knock of the day for Manny Machado. Stay tuned for the AM Casino Resort Padre postgame show with Sam immediately following the game. Suarez is warming up, ready to go. Padres’s with a one-run lead here in the bottom of the eighth. Four-3 over the Diamond. First pitch down and in. Ball one to Johnson. Padre offense looks much more like itself, if you will, here tonight. One and0 sliced the other way. That’s going to get down and a base hit for Johnson. Bur on over to the line to cut it off. He will send it into third base. And backto back two out singles by Machado and Johnson. And now couple of guys on base for Xander Bogarts. Rice taking advantage of his lone AB of the game. The line drive in the left field extends the inning for Xander Bogart. One for three on the night. A double. A bullet in the left. That was an out and a sack bunt. So Bogarts, who has been steady yeti these last few weeks, will get in there in his last 18 games hitting 381. That’s over 60 at bats, by the way. Two on and two out and a step off by Woodford. and that sample size getting bigger and bigger and we’re still seeing the type of numbers that excites you as you start to move into the second half of the season. Now McCain will go out and visit with Padres’s have Johnson with great wheels at first and Mlado at second base. Two outs here in the eighth. Vander the RBI double in the fifth inning. Made it four to two. Right now that hit is the difference in this game. Padres’s four runs on 13 hits. They have had guys on base every single inning tonight. Also left a lot on base. First pitch to Bogarts after a mount visit loan outside ball one. But this is one of those situations we go all right two for 11’s not great but you’d rather be two for 11 than you know 0 for five as they were yesterday. A lot more opportunities and one hit here could really change the complexion of this game. One Bogart’s in the air to center field. McCarthy kind of in his steps will reach up make the catch. That’ll end the inning. A home run robbery to begin the eighth. Couple of two out singles, but two guys left on base and we’ll go to the ninth. Robert Suarez is going to try and come in, close this thing out. Padres’s four, diamond backs three on the Padres’s Radio Network. Hey San Diego, it’s Woodsy. He also has more saves than any man in baseball. 26 of them in 29 opportunities. Going to have to fight through the teeth of the Arizona order though. Catel Marte leads off and batting left-handed. He takes a fast ball high 1 and0. Marte two for six with a double in his career against Suarez. He picked up safe 26 here on Tuesday night. Pitch coming and Marte smacks it bow the other way. One and one. That night, Suarez faced 789 in the batting order and in a one-run game, one- nothing. He retired aside in order. One of his toughest outings this season, of course, came in mid June at Chase Field. Trying to exercise those demons again here tonight. And the pitch is low. Two balls in a strike. Allowed five runs in the middle game in Phoenix back on June 14th. Marte had an infield single that brought home a run that only made it seven to four Padres’s buto a three-run triple after that to tie it pitch in the air foul out of play left side two and two take out the sinker he was looking for was ups it back now 2-2 uses the time right back into the box. Kind of puts that toe hold in the back of the box and now looks out to Suarez. Robert gets the signal from his catcher Elias Diaz. Two and two the count. Here’s the pitch on the way. Marte swings, lines it to left field. Johnson back kind of circles underneath of it and he makes the catch for round number one. Well positioned playing opposite field side track the ball down for out number one. So now Purdomo who had that three-run triple against Suarez back in June. The only hit he’s ever had against Suarez in 4 ABS. Switch hitter batting left-handed and the first pitch from Suarez 100 mph fast ball right at the knees and a called strike nothing and one for a big night RBI double his last time that made it four to three he has also walked and doubled oh and won the pitch and a swing and a miss with another 100 mph fast ball and it’s 0 and2 three digits. A hundo blown by Purdomo down now 0 and2 said ready here it comes swings and able to muscle a foul back out of play. That was another triple digit. Josh Naylor waiting on Dag. Andre have not given him an opportunity to beat him here tonight. He’ll get a chance to hit this evening. 0 and2 and Purdomo takes high outside. He’ll get his opportunity. Nods in the affirmative. Now he comes one and two. The pit and Pomo takes low outside. Two balls too strong like the change up there. Romo able to lay off. Count now even. 4-3 Padres’s with one out. Nobody on. Ninth inning. Two- two pitch. Fouled back over the net behind home plate. So Purdomo in straight battle mode here against Robert Swan. All fast balls except for the one change up. Seventh pitch of the advant about to be delivered. It is two and two. Here it comes. And Pommo swings and misses. Strike three. Another triple digit heater. And two down here in the ninth. Blue heat by him. Fast ball. Middle. Couldn’t do nothing with it. So, two outs and nobody on. And now Josh Taylor will in his mind, I’m sure, finally get the opportunity, having been walked three times tonight, twice intentionally. Last time not happy. First pitch, two and Naylor swings, grounds it to the right side. Frerooth has it at first base. He’ll bring it himself and the ball game is over. Torres for the second time this week. The one 123 ninth inning against the Diamondbacks picks up his major league leading 27th save of the season. And the Padres’s ear in a four-game split with Arizona as they win this one by a final of four to three. Arizona and San Diego splitting this four game set. Lot to do on our postgame show. We’ll hear from Padres’s manager Mike Schult. We have the full game recap for you. All the radio highlights. We’ll break down each and every aspect of this one. But the Padres’s trail two nothing early in this game. They get a run in the third on a Fernando Tati Jr. home run. They get a run in the fourth inning to tie the game at two. Manny gives them the lead with a solo home run to begin the fifth inning. Padres’s get an RBI double in the fifth inning from Xander Bogarts. And then from that point on, it became about this fearsome foresome in the Padres’s bullpin. And they were once again really, really good tonight. And they made some big time pitches and got some big timeouts when they absolutely needed it in a really tight game. Adrien we’ll talk plenty about him. He was terrific. Inning and two/3 scoreless. Jason Adams gave up a run in the seventh inning, but found a way through it to keep the Padres’s in front. Jeremiah Estrada scoreless eighth inning. Robert Suarez picks up his major league leading 27th save of the season with a 123 ninth inning and the Padres’s hang on for a 4-3 win. Gavin Sheets also a big time game. He had three hits here tonight all against the left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez as Sheets continues to put together just a terrific season. Continues to really do well against left-handed pitching. I caught up with Gavin Sheets on the field right after tonight’s 4-3 win. Gavin, let’s start with what you did tonight. Three hits all against the lefty. Why were you able to have success against Edmardo Rodriguez? Yeah, just feeling more comfortable. Um, more bats again against lefties, better feel at them. And um, thought we had a pretty good game plan coming in and just trying to put good at bats together. And obviously when you’re hitting between Manny and Boi in those situations against the lefty, you kind of get you get attacked a little bit more. So, it’s just a benefit of being in that lineup. 13 hits as a lineup today. What did you like about the offensive approach? Yeah, I thought we were aggressive. Um, and I also thought we swung at the right pitches. You know, a lot of walks mixed in as well, and that’s when we’re dangerous. U swing at the right pitches, being aggressive, but also not chasing the pitcher fish pitch. So, I thought we did a great job with that today. You guys like playing close games, another one today. That big four in the bullpen, Suarez, Estrada, Adam, they continue to get it done. What’s it like to play behind these guys? Just a bunch of all stars. That’s uh that’s how you get that name. and and obviously we’d like to to break it open a little bit more, but uh you know those guys those guys pick us up over and over and um they continue to do it again tonight. It was one game out of 162, but it was almost managed tonight. A little like a big game against the division opponent. Did it feel that way tonight? Yeah, we knew it was a big game coming in. Uh we didn’t want to lose the series. We wanted to even it up two to two and obviously it’s a good ball club and division opponents. So, um those games always feel a little bit more important. Gavin, great job tonight. Thanks so much. Appreciate it. Thank you very much. That was Gavin Sheets right after this 4-3 win for the Padres’s against the Arizona Diamondbacks as Gavin Sheets had a good night again. Three hits all against the lefty Rodriguez, the starter tonight for Arizona. Gavin Sheets certainly a nice part of this win, but two home runs. The Stars came to play tonight. Manny had three hits including the home run. Fernando had a couple of hits including a home run. So Fernando and Manny big parts of this win. And again, the Padres’s bullpen just terrific once again here tonight as guess what? The Padres’s win yet another one-run game. Another close game. When they win them these days, they seem to be by the slimmest of margins. That’s been uh something we we’ve come to know about this team. But hey, they now sit at 50 and 43. Uh they continue to keep things afloat and they do split this series from the Arizona Diamondbacks. When we come back, we’ll have all the radio highlights for you. A full game recap. We’ll go downstairs here from Mike Schultz coming up a little bit later as well. Final score, Padres’s 4 and the Dbacks 3. Our postgame coverage continues after this on the Padres’s Radio Network.
