MLB LIVE🔴 Toronto Blue Jays vs Oakland Athletics – Jul 11, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

and welcome in everybody. Glad you’re with us. We bring you Friday baseball on the show. It’s the Toronto Blue Jays going up against the Athletics. First pitch coming at you right after the break. So, just about set now. Our starter in this one, Mitch Spence. But Chris, he hasn’t exactly been stellar here on his home mound. Well, I’ll say this. Every player wants to perform well at their home ballpark in front of their fans, in front of the city. And you know, this guy no different. He wants to be more effective here. So, you know, you look at the numbers, they haven’t been great at home. I’m sure he wants to turn that around and we’ll see if he’s able to start that in this one. Now, it’s the right fielder Nathan Lucas in there at the knees. And we are underway. And a ground ball to first. The flip to the pitcher covering. Going up, one down. Let’s take a look at the lineup for the Blue Jays. Chris, this is an offense that puts the bat on the ball. Tough outs pretty much throughout the lineup and they have fewer strikeouts than any other team in the league. Yeah, Boo. And I I just remember as a player when you’re going up against a club like this, it keeps you on your toes all game long because you got to make plays for your pitcher on the defense. And so an offense like that can really put some pressure on that defense. So they can swing the bats, put it in play, but I also think if they run the bases hard, it adds another element to their game. Bobette batting with one down, takes a strike. Swing and a ground ball base hit right field. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. You rewind and think back to those Giants teams that won three world titles. They were pretty good contactbased teams. Obviously the Royals as well. It feels like it’s swinging back a little bit towards there’s an advantage to having some hitters in your lineup that make contact. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the box now. No balls in a strike. Righty delivers. Rolled to short. Could be two. Flips it. Bears one. What a double play that was. Inning over. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. And the A’s will get their first opportunity in a scoreless ball game. Back here with my pal Singi. And on the hill, number 56. Well, he’s allowing just over one base runner per inning, which is really good, especially for a starter because these hitters get to see you two, three, maybe even four times in a start. So, just shows you how deceptive and how effective his stuff is. We’ll see if it’s that way in this one. Bottom of the first now, the A’s designated hitter, Lawrence Butler. That’s off the mark. Ball one. No ball. That one ripped right center field. And that should be extra bases. Now he’ll turn for second and he’ll make it safely for a leadoff double in the bottom of the first. Well, when you fall behind in the count, you’ve got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard like he did right there. Next up for the A’s, Brent Rooker. That clips the corner. Not even close there. And that is ball one. Let’s go. Let’s go. Swings through that. One and two is the count. Swinging a ground ball and foul ball. That’s a ball. Two and two. in the dirt and it’s a full count swing and a fly ball well struck left field. Strong settles under it and makes the catch. Rounder tags at second and he makes it up to third with one away. And time now to check out the A’s lineup. This group was shut out their last game, so we’re going to see if they can bounce back with a better effort here today. And Boo, it can get in your head a little bit when you get shut out. You’re frustrated. You’re seeing that consecutive streak of innings you haven’t scored. And you want to get off to a great start. score early because if you don’t, you feel like it could linger into two consecutive games which no one wants to be a part of. Bouncer to second, tosses to first. Two away. And now a chance for Shay Langalers. This is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively. Fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate. Good game caller, good at framing, but it’s that big arm that really stands out. You come into the game knowing that unless the ball’s in the dirt or gets by him, we’re probably not going to steal anything today. So, that’s where you want to get a little more aggressive on your secondary lead and hope that some base hits, some slog, some home runs can come into play. Well, I’ll say this. As a former position player and base stealer, when you come into a game and you’ve got a guy like this behind the dish with a big arm, you really have to change your approach. Can’t try to steal cuz you’ll get thrown out. Maybe get a little bigger lead, be aggressive on the secondary, but this type of guy shuts the running game down. That’s a walk. Went with another change up and missed the spot. It’s been a little bit of a shaky inning, but he’s still in a good spot to get out of this thing without giving up any more runs. He’s just got to turn the page and go after this next guy. Tyler Soderstrom stands in with two away as he takes a ball. Langelers off of first with two away. Line drive. They get the force. That’s a third out. So a runon hit. No errors and a man left. We go on to inning number two. It’s the A’s one and the Jay’s nothing. Second inning set to go. Here’s the third baseman, Addison Barger. Barger 25 years old and he was a sixth round draft pick back in 2018. That’s in there. Strike one. First pitch strike right there for him. He’s going to have to do that consistently if he’s going to give any length to his skipper. Next offering is fouled back. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. line drive and that’s base hit out into left center field. So, a man on base to start the inning. Well, that certainly feels good when you can win the atbat after being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Oh, that started. It ended pretty quickly. No messing around right there. Really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. He didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. Joey Lerido next up for the Blue Jays. Double play ball to second. And that is a big first out. That was a productive at bat. You know you’re doing something right anytime you help move two runners into scoring position and give your team a chance to drive in a few runs, even if it’s still kind of early in the game. Miles Straw next up for the Blue Jays. Golden opportunity right here. There’s the strike. Well, in this situation with runners on, you’ve got to get ahead in the count so that you can dictate the rest of the at bat. Nice job right there. And that’s through there for a strike. And a count is 0 and two. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. And he’ll shoot and a foul ball. He stays alive. Gets a piece there. will do it again. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two. Two on, one out. That one to first. Curts now two away as they get a run across. Tyler Heinaman getting ready to hit. This bat might not seem like a huge deal right now, but baseball is a game of moments and what happens here could change everything. And a base hit and they take the lead. Comes through with the RBI. Other than ripping one into the gap or blasting one over the wall, there aren’t a whole lot of hits that are more satisfying than a nice line drive into center field. So, that definitely felt good. Runner at first with two away. Leo Jimenez next up for the Blue Jays in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. 0 and one. on the ground to third and that is the inning. Two runs, three hits, no errors and one left. We go to the bottom of inning number two. Blue Jays two and the A’s one. And welcome back to the ballpark. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. Leading off Maxie. He swings and misses at the first pitch. 0 and one. Oh, after scoring runs, this is where you’re looking for that shutdown inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. Next pitch. Not close. Up high. with a short stop. Takes the ball to what? That’s in there. And that’s strike two. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, hit a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. That one misses. So a lead off walking seven. Gioella to the plate. Ursella. Tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. Tying run is at first. Bottom half of inning number two. And now it’s even up right through there for a strike with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. And a ball even the count on the ground left side. Six four three and they turn the double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. Zack Gell. Now, Zack Gellof. And that skips in the dirt. One ball, one strike. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Two out. Space is empty. And down on strikes. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Nothing doing there for the A’s. They’re down two to one. And we’re back. And now the right fielder, Nathan Lucas. Nathan Lucas. Spence back to work. And that is downstairs. And that’s ball one. Boo. It looks like somebody missed the swing sign. That’s the first pitch this team’s taken for a ball all game long. Next offering is in for a strike. Sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit. Man aboard on the leadoff single back against the wall with two strikes but found a way. Pretty tough for the infielders to do anything with that one. He pulled it hard into the outfield and even when you keep it on the ground, it feels great when you hit a missile like that. Bo Bette up to the dish. One for one with a single so far. And that’s in there for strike one. It’s 0 and one. Lucas on at first. Nobody out. Call And that’s downstairs. And a count. Two on one. Yeah, that’s a little bit high. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. 3-2 now and ball four to a board. Very close off the outside corner. Could have easily been called a strike in that location. Blue hitter. First and second, no outs. Here’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. He’s 0 for one. That’s in for a strike. Big at bat right here with an opportunity to do damage. But on the flip side, ground ball, double play, strike out. That could get the inning back under control on the mound and takes low for ball one. The one-1 is fouled off. First and second, no outs. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Pretty good pitch there to take a rip at. He wants to get his arms extended. He likes the ball away from him a little bit. Just not able to square it up. Battling here as he fouls it away. Foul ball still a one and two count. First and second here. No outs. And it goes just fouled. Two two. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. Caught him looking for the K. Well, I can’t argue with that one. And clearly he was looking for something else. Anything but the breaking ball. It’s a great pitch to hit right there if you’re looking for it and kind of a gift at a two-strike count. But sometimes you just get fooled and you got to tip your cap. Barker in the box now. Takes strike one. That one the other way. Fair ball around third. One runs in. Bette around third and headed home. Now a relay to the plate. The tag and he’s out. The base runner did a great job of making that a close play at the plate with an excellent slide. Made the catcher work to get out there and put down the tag. The throw was on the money and that’s what made the difference. Big time play to cut down a run. Will Wagner will hit next one for one with a single and a run scored so far. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Two outs and one in scoring position. Next pitch is outside. One and two to count. Activity in the bullpen. A right-hander is up and throwing. Struck him out looking. A run on two hits and they leave one. We move on to the bottom of inning number three. It’s the Blue Jays three and the A’s one set for the bottom of the third. Here’s a speed threat. Denzel Clark and the first pitch is drilled in the air out to center. Straw makes the grab. One away. Lawrence Butler the next to hit a double and a run scored his first time up. Nasty pitch right there. Strike one. Hit in the air. Center field. Straw getting an angle on it. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s two down. A rightielder. Two outs. Base is empty. Now the number two hitter Brent Rooker fly to center. His first time. Ball one. No strikes. ball. Basketball in the corner at the knees and it’s a strike. Oh, you just got to tip your cap on that take right there. I mean, that’s not the location you’re hoping for and looking to do damage in a 20 count. Way out front for strike two. Two balls, two strikes. goes down looking and one, two, three go the A’s and it remains a 3-1 ball game. As we go to the top of the fourth now, the left fielder Joey Lopeid And the first pitch misses for ball one. Well, these Jays doing a good job of simply getting the bat on the ball in this game and the numbers back that up. It’s tough to remember the times they’ve actually swung and missed at a pitch because it really hasn’t happened. They’ve made contact on nearly 100% of their swings. Swings through that one out in front that time. Two and one’s the count. That misses the zone. Now three and one. That one misses. So off walk. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. Pretty much gifted him first base with a quick free pass. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Mitch Spence won’t go any further tonight and it’s going to be a start that he’d like to get a redo on. Not his best. Back with a new arm in a minute. New arm out of the bullpen number 50. He’s making his fourth appearance of the season. So, a man aboard, Miles Straw, next up for the Blue Jays on the ground to first over to second for one. How about that double play? For me, that’s one of the toughest double plays to turn on the infield. The first baseman has to get inside, create a throwing lane to hit that middle infielder to start the double play and then from there completing it back to first. Really good job all the way around. Tyler Heinaman next up for the Blue Jays. RBI single, his last time off. That’s outside. That’s outside ball. And another ball. That’s inside. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. That one inside. And that’s ball three. Called strike right there. Back-to-back fast balls in. That last one called for a strike. Probably go away, but look for him to come back in there to try to finish you off. In the air, left field down the line. This one could be trouble. Around first and hustling for second. The throw in in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. Well, I’m not saying that play was easy, but it was harder than it needed to be thanks to the bad jump. Those small moments can be costly. So, runner at second, two down. Now, it’s the second baseman, Leo Jimenez. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Man on second, two down. Turned on but foul wide of third. Heinaman at second with two down. Swings here and drives one well left field way back. And you can forget it. A two-run shot. His first homer of the year. And they add a pair. It’s 51. He absolutely crushed that one. No doubt about that one, Boo. We knew it wasn’t coming back. No matter how this outing ends, that pitch is going to haunt him for a while. An O2 mistake. That’s supposed to be a pitch out of the zone. He left it in a spot that the hitter could do some damage with, and that’s exactly what he did. Back to the leadoff spot in the Blue Jays lineup. And next for Toronto, Nathan Lucas. There’s the strike. 95 of that one. 0 and one and a fast ball misses outside for a ball. And the count even one and one on the ground to first and it stays fair around first heading for two. He’s there. It’s a two out double. This offense is on fire. Three extra base hits in a row. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know, they used to say charge it. Crazy. Bobette gets a chance to hit. man at second. And now the count is even. Late on that fast ball. It might be time to choke up a little bit. Get that front foot down early. Maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. And that one is lifted in the air. throws to second and he’s in there and a run comes in to score. Oh, that right there is a pretty clear example of why making a clean ontarget throw back into the infield is so critical. But so many times it’s easily overlooked. You can’t be careless about it as an outfielder. Doesn’t matter if you’re throwing to a base or a cut off, you have to give them something that they can handle. That cost him a run as a result. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. now in for a strike 0 and one, two outs, bottom of the zone and a cold strike. And a like this is almost over as it begins in this situation. You have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. Next pitch is downstairs. O2 fast ball way out of the zone. I think he’s trying to speed him up. Got to stay back. Off speed’s probably coming. Yeah, that’s too high. the other way. He’s got it. And that is out number three. Three runs on three hits, including the home run. One error and one left to the bottom of inning number four. Now it’s the Blue Jays six and the A’s won. Bottom of the fourth and here’s the first baseman, Nick Curts. Pitch misses. And that’s ball one. This is one of those times when you want to be aggressive. Go ahead and pitch to contact. Let the defense work behind you. You’ve got a nice comfortable lead. Don’t try to be too fine. That one drifts inside. Next offering misses. They’re now 3 and 0. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. It’s tough after falling behind a hitter. Two balls and no strikes, but now at least he gets a fresh start against a new batter. But he needs to get back into the strike zone and start pitching with conviction. And first offering is fouled off. Nobody out. Runner at first. And that’s off the inside edge. And the count is one and one. And that’s outside. That’s a ball. Ground ball right side and that’s just foul. Langelier tries to hold up. Appeal to first. No, he held back. That’s ball four. He just hasn’t had great command of his pitches in this one. Definitely more walks than you’d like to see. First and second, no outs. Here’s the left fielder, Tyler Sodstrom. He’s 0 for one. Fast ball for a strike. Go and one. Here’s an opportunity. If you’re going to get back in this game, you have to take advantage of this situation. This feels like their chance. One. And that one sliced foul on the ground. Two ball offbalance feet. There’s one. And they get him easily at first. It’s a double play. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaguers. They make tough plays look simple. So, two down now. And here is Maxie. Walked his first time. And it’s fouled away. Swing and a miss. Oh, he’s really working that inside corner with the cutter. I tell you what, I hated that pitch. So tough to get the barrel to and to keep it fair. And a swing and a miss. down on strikes and he’s registered three Ks in this one. The A’s strand one. They trail it 6-1. We’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. JP Sears hasn’t pitched in the last three days. Now the Toronto fourhole hitter Addison Barker Barker and that one wrapped foul. Well, these Blue Jays really impressing me with the quality of their at bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. It looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early, get him out of the game before he settles in. So, I’d say mission accomplished in the air left field down the line and that drops foul and that’s outside now. One and two. Hey, you got this. And that’s a swing. It’s a strike out. First base. And now the first baseman, Will Wagner. Wagner goes 5′ 11 in, 210 lbs. And they went out and made a trade for him last season. Right through there for a strike. that fast ball, even though it’s up, that’s the velocity you want to go after. Low 90s a lot better than trying to hit the high 90s. Not close with that one. And now it’s even one and one. One out. Base is empty. Swing and a miss. One and two. Going to really need to hang in there with that front side against this left-handed breaking ball. up the middle and that squirts through. So, a man aboard now with one away. I don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike, but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock. So, a man at first. Now, the left fielder Joey Lrafido upside low and it’s one and0. One ball, no strikes. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Swing and a ball lined out towards center. Pulls it down and he makes the catch. And there’s two down. And now the center fielder, Miles Straw. Miles Straw. Knee high. That’s him for a strike. That one missed. just missed with that back door breaking ball. If he gets a swing and miss or called strike 02 count instead, it’s 1-1. Look for him to go back to that pitch later in this at bat. Swing and a line drive and a base hit up the middle. Just kind of slice that one into center. Now batting catcher Tyler. And now for the Jays, Tyler Heinman. Close but called the ball. One and0. First and second, two down and we’re in the top of the fifth. Hammered down the right side but foul. Blind drive. That’s a pace hit into right field now. A long throw home. It’s offline. The run comes in. It’s 71. Well done. Drives in the run. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. So up next for Toronto, Leo Jimenez. He’s already homerred in this game. That just misses. And that’s ball one. That’s a strike across the top of the zone in the air. center field and that is that they get a run on three hits, no errors and two men left on. Last half of the fifth coming up Blue Jays seven and the A’s won. We head to the bottom of the fifth now. The third baseman, Gio Urella. Well, every pitcher wants run support and having a lead is nice, but it can be challenging for some pitchers. I think keeping the mindset to attack instead of trying to be too fine and have too much finesse, go after hitters and get quick outs. You know, these A’s just aren’t putting together very many good at bats in this one. With just one hit in the game, they’re clearly frustrated and searching for answers at this point. In the air to left down the line, Lfido settles under it. He’s there. He’s got it. And there’s one down. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. And first off is fouled off. Swing and a miss as he was late that time. I thought he was sitting off speed there. Swings and misses at the breaking ball in the dirt. Hinaman collects, fires to first, and it beats him for out number two. That’s a strike out. Oh, that’s pretty much the dream two strike curve ball if you’re the pitcher. hard downward break at the very end that just dips below the swing path and they say pitchers want to try to bounce that pitch right on top of the plate. So that was exactly what he was looking for on the mound. Digging in Denzel Clark and the first pitch misses for ball one. And that drops in for a strike. Swings through that one above the zone on the mound. You take a note. You see the hitter’s willingness to chase that pitch upstairs. Get deeper in the count. Try to climb the ladder. Up and in. And that’s ball two. The Athletics with a lot of ground to make up. Last half of inning number five. Next pitch is outside. Full count. And they’ll do it again. Outside and that is ball four. Gosh, another walk in this one. Man, he is having some real issues with control. So the lineup flips over and now Lawrence Butler one for two. Clips the outside corner. Strike one. If he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. Go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch. The 1-1 is fouled off. Breaking ball in there. Got him looking. Now five strikeouts for him on the mound. No runs on no hits, no errors, and a runner left. We’re through five. Blue Jays seven. And the A’s won. And welcome back to the ballpark. Start of the six, John Shami with Chris Singleton. And leading off, Nathan Lucas. Sears back to work. Line to right and that’ll be a base hit. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. Waste no time there. That’s a good sound coming off the bat, man. And as he connected out front, ripped it into the outfield. That’s one of those swings where you just don’t even feel the ball hit the barrel. That’s a pure stroke. And the batter will be the shorts stop, Bobette. And first offering is fouled off. Just missed. The shorts stop takes the ball. Yeah, the 2-1 hammered but fouled. His eyes got big. He saw that change up way out in front. Better to pull it than to get jammed on something off speed like that. That one just misses. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. Foul chip into the mid. Struck him out. It’s a good breaking ball there just off the corner where you can’t really do much damage, but it’s close enough to where you got to protect and he just couldn’t find a way to fight it off. Now it’s the Toronto designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero Jr. 0 for three in this one. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Lucas stands at first with one out in there for a strike at the top of the zone. Don’t play situation here. He’s been working up in the zone. Typically, you look for guys to get that ground ball. See if he adjusts on this next pitch. That one went inside. Gonna count one and two and a pop off right side. Foul territory. Curts on the move to the wall and he can’t reach it. Next offering is down low. Man at first, one away. Fly ball down the line. This has got a chance and it is foul. Oh, good solid contact right there. Just a bit out in front of that fast ball. Got to try to stay on that backside just a little bit longer and see if you can do some damage. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. Fly ball to right. Rooker sizing this one up. Puts it away for the out. Two down. Now batting third base. Addison Barger digs in now. There’s the strike. The Jays up big in this one. And we’re the top half of the sixth. And that’s in for a strike. And it’s 0 and two. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. And that one is downstairs. And the count is one and two. And there’s a fly ball deep right field. That’s back there. And he brings it in on the warning track. They get a leadoff single, but leave him stranded. 234 up in the home half of the six. Blue Jays seven and the A’s won. Bottom of the six. Now it’s the right fielder Brent Rooker. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Action in the pen down there. Ryan Burr up and loosening in the pen. Green getting cranked up as well. Pitch in the dirt and one and one. Swag and a miss. One and two is the count. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. And they have their first hit since the first inning. Really nice job with two strike hitting in that at bat. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground balls. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. Nick Curts up next for the A’s. Curts having a really nice first season in the big leagues. Definitely a rookie of the year candidate. Foul ball. swinging a miss at a slider. That pitch started in ended up on the outside edge just changing planes and very difficult especially for a left-handed hitter to track. Rolled to short possible two ball touches the bag for one over to first but he beats it. And here is Shay Langalers, known for his rocket arm behind the plate. First pitch misses. And that one that missed. That’s the ball. Cutting but missing down low. And another ball. Check swing called stride and a swing to miss countsful swing and a miss and he’s down on strikes. So he picks up his sixth strike out of the ball game. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. Swing and a ball lifted left field. Lido pulls it down and that ends the inning. And we’re back. New inning getting started. And here’s the first baseman, Will Wagner. And the first offering a fast ball for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Next offering is fouled back. And now one and two. And that one upstairs. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. swing and a ball popped up. Gellof squeezes it. One away. Now batting left fielder Joey Lido. Here’s the left fielder Joey Lrafido. That one misses ball one. 10th drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck and an automatic double as it hops the fence. The automatic double kind of feels like enjoying cruise control in your car. Boo. You don’t need to keep the pedal down as you cruise into second base. Just no worries in the world. You know what? He put a really good swing on that one. Man at second with one away. Stepping in, Miles Straw. Outside with a breaking ball. And it’s even up. What? One ball, one strike. The 1-1 is fouled off. Runner at second here. One gone. Bows it off. Still one and two. Really great change of speeds. He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next. Right side Kurtz steps on first for the owl. Now batting catcher Tyler. Here’s the catcher Tyler Heinaman. Three for three with two singles and a double. Baby, let’s go. And that one fouled off. High but still in the zone for a strike. That was the sweeper. fouled off and they’ll do it again. Lrafito on third with two out. This one in the dirt and well done to keep it close. Outside low and the count is even. Two and two. on the ground right side. Gellof to first. Third out and that ends the frame. No runs, one hit, a double, no errors, and one man left. Seventh inning stretch time. Blue Jays seven and the A’s won. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Ryan Burr. This is his third time out this year. Now it’s the shortstop. Maxy struck out on just three pitches last time. Now a check swing, but he held up. And that is out of play. slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats. And a swing and a miss at the slider in the dirt in time. And the drop third strike leads to the first out. Well, when you throw the same pitch back to back, that’s how you want to do it. Set him up in the strike zone, then extend a little bit from there and see if you can get him to chase. Nicely done with the slider right there. Here’s Gioella. B for two in this one. Swinging a ground ball up the middle. Gets it to first. Forella is out. Now batting second base Zack Gellof. So digging in Zack Gellof. Ripped but a curls foul. Two down. Nobody on swinging a foul straight back and there’s a rocket into the outfield. Takes the turn. He’s digging for second. The throw in. Not going to get him. He’s in there. Well, he found himself behind in the count right there, but he didn’t give in. He really shot that one down the right field line and somehow found a way to keep it from slicing. Foul. One thing that was great about the approach, his head was down all the way through the pitch and that’s how you do it. Man scored position with two away. Next up for the A’s, Denzel Clark. Here’s a swing and a drive left field and he knew it. His fourth home run of the season. It’s 73. They needed that one, Singy. Indeed they did. They’ve been fighting to get back into this game and just like that, they’re back in it. Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate, but he was ready to turn on the inside fast. So to the pitch, absolutely blasted out of this ballpark. So back to the top of the order now. Here’s the leadoff hitter for the A’s, Lawrence Butler. One for three. Just off the inside edge. That one finds the corner. One ball, one strike. Base is empty, two away, but two runs are in. here in the bottom of the seventh. That misses off the outside edge. He’s getting a little frustrated out there on the mound getting hit around a little bit. Let’s see if he can settle himself down. Now it’s three and two. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch. That one is absolutely belted and it’s off the foul pole for a home run. They do it again. Backto back homers. His 14th of the year. And they inch closer. It’s 74. That swing just injected more drama into this one. Well, he really crushed that thing down the line and everyone had to hold their breath until it clanked off the pole. And every time that happens, it just kind of feels like a trick shot or something, but really it’s just a stroke of luck that it stays fair long enough. Here comes the skipper. And we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Ryan Burr gives way. It’s a three-run game. And we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. Now on the bump, Braden Fiser. Well, you see the RA very solid and that doesn’t always tell you the whole story, but he’s been really good so far this year. Two outs, nobody on. Brent Rooker up next for the A’s. And that’s outside. Check swing appeal. Whoa. Recognize that pitch just in time. Able to keep those hands back. Two outs. Now a pop up on the infield. Wagner should have this one. Corrals it and that is that. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s now a 74 ball game. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Justin Sterner just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Leo Jimenez now at the plate. He’s already homerred here in this one. Sterner in his rookie season. He features a fourseam fast ball, a curb, a slider, and he works in a sinker. And there’s a foul ball. Foul ball still 0 and two. upstairs. That’s a really good job of laying off the O2 high fast ball is going to make that pitcher really have to respect this hitter even though he’s behind in the count. Misses and the count now even up. Two and two. We got a full count. That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. Works the walk. That’s a tough one to swallow right there. If you’re on the mound, you’re ahead in the count 02 and you just couldn’t find a way to put him away. That’s going to be frustrating if that one comes back to bite him. And first offering is fouled off. One and one in the dirt. Blocked. ripped on a line. Hauls it in for the owl. And next for Toronto, Bo Bashet. The short stop takes the ball. Clearly didn’t come out of his hand the right way. Left that curveball way up. No, that missed. That’s a ball. Jimenez over at first with one away. Next pitch misses. Three balls, no strikes. That one in there across the letters. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. This one in the air. Kurtz hauls it in for the out and there are two down. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. Vlatty Jr. stepping to the dish now. Chris baseball today. So many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers. But this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. first offering and it just misses. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. When you look at the elite teams in the game right now, there is going to be the slug. No question about it. But the really good offensive teams combined swing and this one’s blasted. It’s got a chance. Makes the catch on the edge of the track. Blue Jays held in check. They hold a 7-4 lead. And welcome back to the ballpark. Ready for the bottom of the eighth. And now the first baseman, Nick Curts. Out of the outside corner. And that is strike one. Movement in the Blue Jays. bullpen. Jeff Hoffman, a right-hander with big strikeout stuff, is getting it fired up. Green getting loose as well. Strike two. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end. Ah, that hit him. And the leadoff man is aboard to start the inning. Shay Langalers up next for the A’s. Couple of walks and a strikeout. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter. Fast ball in the inside corner for a strike. No balls, one strike. Yeah. And I figured you would get caut into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. Got him swinging. Wow. Just great bite to that slider. Broke hard out of the zone and he just couldn’t hold up the swing. You know, as a hitter, that pitch is really hard to take and there’s just not much you can do with it. You know that, but you don’t want to get rung up by the umpire. Next up for the A’s, Tyler Soderstrom. And the pitch is outside. Ball one. Here’s a runcoring opportunity. You definitely got to push something across because it’s not going to get any easier. You get to the ninth, you got a lock down closer ready to come in. Swings and pulls a foul to the right side. Now fly ball to right center. Lucas sizes this one up and puts the squeeze on that one. Two down. Up next for the A’s short Max. Here’s the shorts stop at the play. Maxy a walk and a pair of strikeouts. And a foul ball. Two outs. The shorts stop takes the ball. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. The Blue Jays leading by three here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Had a good eye there. Two two and that’s in the dirt. 3-2. Two out. Runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. out to short. Bette whips it to first on the run and very nicely done for the out. The A’s strand one and they’re on the wrong end of a 74 score. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Jacob Lopez gets an opportunity to square off against his former team. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if he came out a little extra jacked up right here. And now the Toronto Cleanup hitter, Addison Barker. Addison Ber. There’s the strike. Highf fly ball pretty well struck out towards right center. That’s back tattooed and gone. A solo shot. It’s 84. That one just sounded different. And might have been the loudest moment yet. Man, my ears are ringing. I can feel that swing from the booth. When you’re working with this kind of velocity, so critical that you move the ball around, work quickly, and make sure that you keep that hitter off balance. Clearly not fooled by the location or the velocity. He was all over that fast. And now for the Jays, Will Wagner and that finds the mark on the outside corner. And it’s 0 and one. Just miss ball. One and one. That’s a little bit low. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in here in the top of the ninth. Swing and a miss. And now two balls and two strikes right through there. Got it. And that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. Boom. He was shopping at the buckle right there. The way that slider made him walk, that was just nasty. Joey Lopeido next up for the Blue Jays. That one finds the zone and that’s strike one. Swing and a ground ball. Base hit right field. Couple of hits in a row for him here. He kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit, but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock. And you’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole. Next to hit, Miles Straw. And that one upstairs. Ball one. Next one misses and the count is 2 and 0. Nasty 20 slider there for a strike. That tells you he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch. Runner on the go on the ground to the left. Boots it and no shot to get him at first. There’s two aboard. Now batting catcher Tyler Heinman. First and second, one out. Here’s the Toronto catcher Tyler Heinman. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Lido over at second. Strong over at first. So one away. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. Two on, one out. And now it’s even up. stays alive. Now he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit, try to move it around, create just a little bit of illusion at the end. keeps the at bat going with a foul ball. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. On the ground is second. Might be two. They get one double play and that’ll do it for the Toronto extends the lead on the solo shot. It’s now an 8-4 score. back now as they hand the ball to a fresh arm to start the bottom of the ninth. Chad Green and he’s got a nice lead to work with so he should come in throwing strikes attacking these hitters. Now, here’s Gio Urleta. Just missed. Ball two of them. That one fouled off. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock and the leadoff man aboard. So up next, Zack Gellof. Well, the laid-off man gets on. You want to minimize the threat by playing sound defense. Hopefully the pitcher can get a ball on the ground and they can roll him up for two right through there for a strike. Good approach right there. You want to get something just a little higher that you can elevate. Stay out of that double play. Next pitcher slider that misses outside. And there’s a ball. Had a breaking ball. Misses outside. Pretty easy to give up on that pitch right there. Started on the edge of the plate with the spin. You know it’s going to finish well off the plate. Ruer at first with no outs here. Swinging a miss. Struck him out and one gone. He’s two outs away. Here’s the center fielder, Denzel Clark. in the first pitch misses for ball one. The A’s down by four here in the last half of inning number nine. Misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. Next offering is downstairs. And there’s the automatic. swing and a ball driven pretty well out towards left center. He makes the grab. That’s out number two. The Athletics down to their last out. Next is the designated hitter, Lawrence Butler. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. Ball one. One. Two outs. Popped in the air left field. And that’ll fall for a base hit. They stop the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. And his hot hitting continues. They kept him in the yard that time, but all he’s doing now is passing the baton. And everything seems to get started around this guy. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Chad Green is done. And the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Jeff Hoffman comes on trying to close it out. Should be a good first match up for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up. Brent Rooker will hit next. And first offering is fouled off. Two on, two outs. Check swing. Cold strike. 0 and two. Hoffman is just one strike away and that is downstairs and count one and two. Got him. And that’s the ball game. Oh, four pitch save. He was just starting to get comfortable out there after throwing a lot of pitches in the bullpen in this one. But a nice job of attacking the hitters, being very efficient. And this is what you want to do. You want to come in and you want to close things out as quickly as possible. And our final here today, 84 for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
