For the first time listeners today, if you want to know how this channel works, I bring you episodes Monday through Friday, 30 minute episodes as well as a 60-second YouTube short after each and every Royals game. And we have another host as well for the Locked on Royals postcast, which are live broadcasts for about 15 minutes right after the game. That’s Chance Lebo. And if you want to know more about him, just go back to our episode from yesterday. I had him on the show because it was an off day. We plan on doing that moving forward. You can get his thoughts on the Royals, and you certainly can get his opinion on the game tonight after the Royals and Mets wrap up, oh, I would say around 10:00ish. Uh, before we get started, I want to tell you that today’s show is brought to you by Game Time. Download the Game Time app, create an account, and use code locked on MLB for $20 off on your first purchase. If I miss anybody’s question, whether it be on YouTube or on Twitter, just reach back out to me and say that, you know, I’m going to ask this question again. you didn’t get to it in the episode, then I’ll be sure to answer it by the end of the weekend. Let’s kick things off with Drew’s question. Could the Royals realistically acquire an impact bat without trading Luggo? Personally think we need the consistency in the starting rotation, especially trying to chase down Boston, Tampa, and Seattle. The answer to your question is 100% yes. They could get an impact bat and keep Seth Lugo at the same time. And I put this out there on Twitter this morning. It was an article from Katie Woo and Patrick Mooney of the Athletic that the Royals are in the market for a bat and likely won’t deviate from their starting pitching. So, they’re trying to add some offense, but they’re not very, you know, high on the idea of trading away Seth Lugo for that exact reason. They feel this team can make a push in the second half and trading away Seth Lugo goes against that. It may not result in this team making it to the postseason, but I will say this, if they hang on to Seth Lugo, I gotta believe that they feel pretty confident they can bring him back for next year and years beyond that. But they can acquire an impact bat by trading away one of their top prospects. Personally, I hope it’s not David Shields or Carter Jensen. Everybody else should really be on the table. Next question is from Curb. Will Nick Loftton continue to get more playing time and what does it mean for potential trade targets? For the time being, he will get more playing time. Just because he’s one of the hotter bats, at least of the last three to four games, and he’s been hitting the ball incredibly hard. It does not mean that they are going to pass over trade targets because Nick Loftton has had a couple of good games. He can get more playing time, but I’ve always felt that he’s better suited for the utility role. If that means him playing once a series, that’s fine by me, but it should not deter them from acquiring an impact impact bat at the deadline. Alex, question. With the reports of Rod Manfred wanting a salary cap, do you believe a work stoppage would be worth it if it meant we got a salary cap or even a salary floor? I would hate to see a work stoppage. I really would. I understand that the players are going to be against a salary cap because their opinion is that they should be able to make as much money as they can, but we’ve seen so many other leagues adopt the salary cap to keep things competitive. I mean, we’ve seen in the NBA a few small market teams win the championship the last few years. You saw Oklahoma City get it done. If you want to call Denver small market, I I wouldn’t fight you on it. On the NFL side, Kansas City is still technically a small market and they’ve been to five of the last six Super Bowls. So, you know, the salary cap can help things. It would prevent the Dodgers from signing everybody. Um, and it would maybe with the salary floor, that’s what I’m more for is the salary floor because it keeps these other teams competitive and forces owners to spend money and keep their team from going, you know, 21 and 71 or whatever the Rockies are right now or what the White Socks were last year. I want good baseball. I want competitive baseball. And truthfully, as much as the Dodgers have been spending, it’s not like they are 70 and 20. I mean, they’re on a six-game losing streak right now because baseball’s tough to win, you know? 70 to 80 90% of your games, even with a loaded roster because injuries happen. You know how it all goes down. But I’m more for of a salary floor than a salary cap. I I just do not see the players really get on board with it, which as you pointed out could lead to a work stoppage. Jeremy’s question, explain to me in nonbiased and logical terms how Michael Garcia Michael Garcia isn’t an all-star. Well, some of the reserves are picked by the manager, which is Aaron Boone of the New York Yankees, who has Jazz Chisum on the team. And then I did see uh somebody put out there that some of the other fill in reserves are the next highest vote getters of that position. So like Zack McKinstry, I believe, was the next high highest vote getter. So you can put a little bit of blame on the coaching staff not picking him to be an all-star, but also there just weren’t enough votes for Mel Garcia. I believe he was absolutely a snub. he should be in Atlanta for the All-Star game. He just hasn’t been as notable as a name as some of these other players. And at the end of the day, if you’re on a team that’s under 500 nationally, not a lot of people pay attention to your team. This one is from Michael. The Royals are like the Jerry Reed song lyrics. When you’re hot, you’re hot. And when you’re not, you’re not. Well, not a question, but I can absolutely agree with that statement. An inconsistent bunch. Uh when they’re riding high, it really feels like they’re riding high. And when they’re not playing well, it’s really ugly to watch. It is some pretty rough product to watch on a nightly basis, which doing this podcast, you know that I am tuning in on a nightly or daily basis. This one is from Caleb. Should we give MJ another shot? I don’t see how it could hurt considering the people who are already playing. I believe MJ Melendez will get a shot in the second half. He’s actually been playing a little bit better of late in Omaha. They need more power off the bench. With the weather getting a little bit warmer, that might favor him. And as much as I would love to see John Rae succeed in Kansas City, I feel I’d almost rather have MJ’s bat back up here, and I know there’s going to be the comments of, “Well, there’s not much of a bat to talk about.” He’s a bat with big league experience where John Rave barely has any. And if I’m looking at somebody off the bench to run into one, maybe it doesn’t even have to be John Rae, it could be Mark Cana. I just want somebody that can run into one and even if MJ Melendez is hitting a buck 70 or buck 80, he’s got that ability to run into one, which sometimes you just need coming off the bench in the ninth inning. This one’s from your boy Chris. With Jensen and Mitchell, the top prospects in the Royals minor league system, are we watching Salvador Perez’s last season in KC? We touched on this a little bit yesterday. I’m just not sold that it is. Um, I feel that Salvador Perez is going to be a royal for life and however they can get that done, they’re going to get it done. It does not mean it’s going to block Carter Jensen or Blake Mitchell. I just feel they can take their time a little bit with those two guys. Like Carter Jensen’s played 12 games in Triple A. Blake Mitchell is just now playing his first games of the season and working back from that broken hand injury. These guys need to take some time, really develop fully because they’re going to be replacing one of the most iconic players in franchise history. I don’t believe it’s Sally’s last season. I believe he’s at least got one more. I understand about the contract stuff, but I still feel that his final season is when he calls it quits for good. Next one is coming from Brick. Who’s the ideal trade target and do we move Luggo or try to lock him up long term? for the Luggo question. I just don’t see them dealing him at this point in time. Now, if they torpedo between now and July 31st, I I really believe they’ll have no choice. You can’t, you know, expect, unless you feel like you’ve got an offer on the table that he can’t refuse to have him back next year, and you might as well get value and try to start your off season a little bit early. As for trade targets, there’s a couple of outfielders that would really help out this lineup. I mean, we talked about the ones in Boston. And I’m just not sold that they’re ever going to move your aru or Jiren Durant. I also feel that the Padres’s might be a better fit for Duran than the Royals and they might go more allin than the Royals would. Um, you also look at at guys like a Jesus Sanchez and Alex Call who we’ve talked about before. Joe Adele is a name that I’ve always liked. Taylor Ward, speaking of two angels there. Um, so there are going to be outfielders in play. I’m also curious what those teams are asking for because if these are guys experiencing great seasons, well, they’re going to try to leverage that. And if these are guys that have multiple years of control, they’re going to try and leverage that. And the Royals need to be smart. They can’t just trade just to trade for somebody. Um, they need to make sure that what they’re giving up, they can live with. They can uh replace in the system. And sometimes, you know, after the Major League Baseball draft, that’s when you start to see the moves happening. because right now the focus might be on the Major League Baseball draft, adding talent to your farm system and then a few weeks later parting ways with some guys that are in your system. Let’s take our first break of the show. When we come back, still a lot of questions to get to next on Locked on Royals. You are tuning in to Locked Ony and the Locked on Podcast Network. That’s supply.com. Next question is coming from uh Master. Is there a world where we trade Freddy to bring up Carter Jensen? Not this year. I feel that Carter Jensen is going to stay in Triple A for the remainder of the season, and it wouldn’t surprise me after spring training next year if he goes back to Triple A to continue his work there. There’s just no need to rush him. Uh you you move Jack Kaggleó up rather quickly. The last thing you want to do is move Carter Jensen up quickly. And Jensen’s a different prospect. You know, Jack Kagleion was a top 10 pick. Carter Jensen wasn’t even a first round pick. He was a high school bat. You’ve been developing him. I feel you need to take your time and really season the guy a little bit longer than just a few few games or or 30 games or 40 games in AAA. It doesn’t need to be do or die this year. I really believe that they can slow play it. This one’s from Mike. Tommy Fam reunion would be cheaper. Would be a cheaper trade target for the outfield. I wouldn’t hate it. I really like Tommy Fam and what he brought to the team last year, not just, you know, for a couple of the games that he was able to help out a lot offensively. It was more so of the presence he brought to the team. He’s a he’s a fighter and I know that’s a little bit humorous because he has threatened to fight people before. Tommy Fam though has played well in Pittsburgh over the last handful of weeks. Want to say that, you know, he he fixed his his eyesight a little bit. I could have been fooled by a fake tweet or something, but I want to say he got new contact lenses and that’s had him hit over 300 over the last handful of weeks. He’s going to be a trade target because the Pirates are going to be selling. But does Tommy Fam put you over the edge? In my opinion, if you’re going to make a move, it needs to be somebody that you’re going to have for next year and maybe even the year after that where Tommy Fam would be a rental. This one is from Royals Chiefs. Can we get a mock draft pick on 23 and 28 uh for the Major League Baseball draft minus Josh Hammond at 23 and Quinton Young at 28? Really, really like Josh Hammond at 23. Cruz Schoolcraft is another prep arm that I really like. And then Devin Taylor, I I believe was the last one that most recently became one of my top prospects. The outfielder from Indiana. Really good numbers, really good slash line. And the Royals just need outfield help. I don’t care if it’s a prep bat or a college bat. I’d lean prep bat just so they can take their time a little bit more. Um because I’m not looking for a college bat to move up in the same way Jack Kaggleon did. They need to take some time with the guy they take at 23 and at 28 because they’re not going to be can’t miss prospects. But those are the three names that I really feel strongly about. And Hammond, Schoolcraft, and then Taylor coming out of Indiana. This one’s from Matthew. If you’re the Royals front office, who do you trade at the deadline? And would you look at packages for MLB ready players or to build the farm system? Easy answer for the second part of that. I’m looking for major league ready players because the Royals are pretty adamant about winning next year as well. If they felt that they were years away, by all means go for the low guys. Go for the 18 and 19 year old lottery ticket guys. But if you’re going to trade pieces, I would like to see guys that can contribute now, next year, and the year after that. As to who you should be trading, it’s tough because who is really available out there? We can talk about Will Abrau and Jiren Durant. I really don’t expect them to be fully available unless you, you know, send them the house. You throw the kitchen sink at them. If you’re looking at someone like a Taylor Ward, you’re looking at someone like a Jesus Sanchez, you’re looking at someone like an Alex Call, then you could probably acquire a few of those players for less than Carter Jensen or Blake Mitchell or, you know, a David Shields. though you might have to part ways with someone like Ramon Ramirez or part ways with someone like Blake Walters or somebody that you know could have some upside like a Eric Sarinola but is just not producing the numbers right now. Um so those are some of the names that I would watch for. Drew Beam is someone I really like. Wouldn’t want to see them trade but I also can’t go back on what I just said where nobody should be off the table unless your name is David Shields and and Carter Jensen. This one is from the Mizzler. If they don’t pick up Salvi’s option and potentially don’t have Lugo, Lorenzan, and Estz contracts on the books, we will have around 30 to $40 million freed up. With our aggressiveness to try and get an outfitter last free agency, do you think Kyle Tucker is a pos is a possibility this off season? As much as I would like to say yes, I’m going to say no. Uh because I don’t see the Royals losing all of that and then say, “Well, we’re gonna put all that money towards Kyle Tucker.” They need more help, as much as it pains me to say, than just a Kyle Tucker. He could make their offense better. Absolutely. Could you imagine Bobby Wit Jr. and Vinnie and Mike Kell and Kyle Tucker and a much better version of Jack Kaggle Leone? You’d have a great offense, but you’re talking about replacing three arms that have been really valuable for you this year. Seth Lugo, incredibly valuable. Carlos is tied for the American League league in saves, and he’s also one off the league lead in saves. So, I would say that it’s very unlikely cuz I also expect Kyle Tucker to get the biggest deal on the market for outfielders out there and I just don’t see the Royals being in play for that. Could always change though. I don’t know. It’s a long time before the off season. R.J.’s question is sweat in the bathtub the new 1738. They are taking much better at bats, contact swings, shortening up, and putting the ball in play. I hope this approach sticks. They look loose for the first time in a year. and also look like they’re not trying to do too much. Thoughts on that? It’s possible. They seem to be more lively in the clubhouse. They seem to me be more lively in the dugout. That naturally happens when you’re winning a lot of games. And it’s going to carry you as far as it can. I mean, if you really keep winning baseball games, that energy is not going to stop. It is a close group, though. And that’s why come trade deadline, you trade away some pieces, even if you are somewhat in contention, it can fracture that a little bit. We’ve seen it with other teams happen before. Last year, the Royals brought in some pieces and it only boosted them uh more. So, I feel that this clubhouse led by a guy like Vinnie Pasquantino is very lively, very vibrant and and how he talks to the media and all that type of stuff. It’s got the the opportunity, I should say, to become the next 1738. I’m still waiting though for that one song they pick that we can listen to on repeat for the remainder of the season and hopefully into the postseason. This one’s from Kenji. segment idea during the All-Star break. Do an evaluation of their first half and what to expect for the second half for every guy on the opening day roster. I like it and I’ll pin that and make sure I get to it at some point next week. Luke asks, “We’ve talked a lot about Kaggs needing some protection with a hitter in the seventh hole. Can Loftton be that guy? If so, what do you need to see from him to make you more comfortable with that?” Unfortunately, I do need to see a lot more. When I’m looking at protection in the seven hole, I need somebody that is a legitimate threat on a gameby-game basis to do damage. And Nick Loftton, I know he had a great SE series. He’s also a sub 200 hitter for the entirety of his career. It’s only been three seasons, but there’s not enough there to say that’s true protection. What I need to see from him be a 280 to 290 hitter in the second half. And that can be a guy that pitchers are going to add the focus on if they are to pitch around Jack Kagleon because you put him on base, Nick Loftton hitting 285, 290 could be a guy that could do some damage. Next one is from Gary with Carter Jensen tearing it up. Is Freddy on the trade block? Wouldn’t say this year again on that topic of Carter Jensen. No need to rush him. It’s only been 12 games. let him finish out the year in TripleA and then I would even say first portion of next year I’d be all right with him in Omaha. And lastly, let’s get to Jake’s question on Twitter, then we’ll take our final break. So, they only win one when I’m out of the country. This is unfair. Well, I I don’t know where you’re at. Hopefully, you’re somewhere that’s tropical. You’re on a beach and you can still access the game. Um, but if they win these next three games, maybe you are going to have to stay wherever you’re at. Okay, let’s take our final break of the show. When we come back, we’ll get to our YouTube questions for a mailbag Friday on Locked on Royals. We’re going to jump over to YouTube for the first time in this episode and get to the first question from Wilson. What’s the best place to sit at Kaufman on a budget? I’ve sat near each foul, but looking looking to mix it up. I’m a big upper deck person. I love to sit um probably more so right field line between home and first place or first base and then I would say about 20 rows up on Saturday. That’s the exact spot I’m going to buy tickets for. It’s like 15 bucks, I believe. Um it’s not to say I don’t like the lower level. I do. I just don’t want to spend $40 to $50 on a ticket if I’m just going to watch the game. I love sitting in the upper deck because you can really see everything. Um, and I just don’t want to be blocked by the foul pole either. I don’t mind the outfield seats either. You just can’t see everything as well and you can’t really judge the ball as perfectly as you can in the upper deck. Next one is from Bee. Two things. If you had to pick, which would you go with? Ice cream, frozen yogurt, sherbet, or popsicles? And what is a song you love but don’t play around your friends because you don’t want them to know you like that song? love the videos as always. And as I should probably bring up again, I love the questions that don’t always pertain to baseball. So my question for that or my answer I should say, um, let’s go the custard and just the regular old ice cream. Really like all of those options, but those are my top two favorites. And the song I would play that I don’t around friends, that’s a really good question. Um, I’m I’m really blanking on this one. Maybe it’s something by by Taylor Swift. I would say something by Taylor Swift there. Old Taylor Swift, though. More of the the late 2000s, like mine. Tear drops on my guitar. I’ll go with that one because I’m really blanking on everything else. Next one is from looks like Steve. Would it be possible for the Royals to acquire Alcantara from Miami, even though his ERA is a high seven? I’m going to say no. And if the Royals do acquire starting pitching, it’s going to be more of a swing guy, somebody that they can use for depth, very comparable to what Michael Lorenzan was last year. This one’s from Anthony. If the Royals decide not to trade Lorenzan this year, do you think they use his secondyear option and resign him next year? And is Lorenzan someone you would want the Royals to resign next year or just move on from? I would love to see Lorenzan back uh just for the right price if if the market’s way too expensive for a fifth starter. I believe Lorenzan is that perfect fit and I believe he really gets along well with the coaching staff and they could use that secondyear option as well because it’s easy to say we’ll just go get another fifth starter. The Royals just don’t have any depth in TripleA at this point in time. So I would be fine with him coming back. That is if they don’t deal him at the trade deadline. The next one is coming from Justin. Do you think Alex Call would be a good addition to the outfield? And would the Royals have to give up much to get him? Yes and not really. Uh this is a guy with years of control, but also 30. Um he’s not the everyday player that Washington uses in the outfield. They’ve got a young core and I just don’t believe he really fits that timeline. He would be somebody I would really keep my eye on because I feel he’d fit well in Kansas City. Ja’s question. Lugo Lorenzan and Blanco to the Cubs for Ke Kevin Alcantara and Brandon Birdell. Is that in the realm of a possibility? Honestly, I think that’s given up too much for what you’d be getting in return. Those are good prospects, but if the Royals are going to trade Seth Lugo, they need guys that can for sure help this team right now and years in the future. The next one is coming from Nate. What type of player could Blake Mitchell get for you? Would that be a start for Durant? It would be a start. you just would have to give up a lot more because Blake Mitchell hasn’t played this year. He’s still rising up the prospect rank, so who really knows? Maybe that’s telling us something. The talent is there. The numbers aren’t quite there just yet. The injury set him back. It would be a start for Durant. You unfortunately would have to package in likely two more prospects there. and someone like a a David Shields who I really just would not want to give up and maybe someone at the big league level too like a you know a Noah Cameron that that Boston would try to take on there. So it would be a start but it wouldn’t be all that it would take to acquire a top bat like him. The next question is from Armageddon is in what world does Jazz Chisum or Junior Camro deserve an all-star spot over Mikel Garcia? I don’t believe either of them did. At least I’m gonna be biased there and say that Garcia deserved to get in over him. Tampa Bay though, a playoff team right now, the Yankees or the Yankees. Those are notable names that are going to get in or picked by the manager. We touched on that a little bit to open up the show. Unfortunately for Mike Kell, as great as he’s been, the Royals are 46 and 48 and three and a half games out of a playoff spot. The Jets question, it feels like Jack is getting left out to dry, hitting in the six hole with no protection. Personally, I think someone like Vinnie or India makes more sense in the six spot because they will both take a walk. Do you think that would lengthen it in the lineup or just put a black hole in the three to five spots with Kags there? Unfortunately, um I just don’t believe they’ve got the depth to move the move the lineup around that much. Uh what they’re doing at this point in time is what they need to stick to because the offense has been better in July. Would love for them to get protection in the seven hole. I feel the only way you’re going to get that is if Nick Loftton goes on a tear in the second half or if you go out there and acquire a bat that could hit seventh for you. If Jack starts to hit better though, that’s going to solve everything. If what we saw in the last three games against Pittsburgh is what’s to come, then I do feel better about getting him some more protection in the seven hole and that only boosting his numbers as we, you know, go on in the season. Next one here is coming from Caleb. What is your favorite Royals memory slashcall? Favorite Royals memory is always going to be the wildcard game. I was there in person for it. It was my first taste of playoff baseball anywhere. As I brought up with sitting on the right field line, it was between home plate and first base. Great view of it. Great view of Salvador Perez’s walk-off single um in that game. So, that by far and away is my my favorite moment. My favorite call would probably have to be Denny Matthews call of Alex Gordon’s home run against Minnesota in 2014. And I brought it up so many times on the show. Uh so I do feel that I have beaten a dead horse with this. It’s such a a clever call though and also just how great baseball can be. And when Gordon walked up to the plate, he’s facing Glenn Perkins who was an all-star that year. you know, Royals are down by one, runner at first, and Gordon just puts one right into the party deck and right center field. But right before it, Denny Matthews was saying, and I know I’m going to butcher the quote, so maybe I shouldn’t say this is my favorite call, but it was something along the lines of, “If this is your year and everything is pointing to the fact that it is for the Royals, these are the type of games that you win. If this is not your year, then these are the games that you lose.” And seconds later, you hear the crack of the bat and he homers and you have the famous Denny Matthews called there. It gives you chills. It gives you goosebumps because the Royals went on to get to the World Series that year. And it’s not anything like what we saw in 2024 cuz that 2014 year was so special as as we all know because it was the first time a lot of people were experiencing baseball like that. Like in my lifetime, I had never seen the Royals play competitive baseball like that. Even in 2013, they were always running uphill. They were always trying to catch up to somebody where in 14 they had a playoff spot numerous times and then were able to clinch it on the final series in Chicago, believe it was game one or game two of that series. And then you got to see them do what they did in the postseason. They almost at the time made those 29 years worth it. and I wasn’t even alive for a chunk of that. But that year was so special and even though it ended the way it did in game seven, it set up 2015 so perfectly. And I wouldn’t trade those years for anything. I know I’m a baseball guy, but those two years were my favorite sports years of my lifetime. And I’m a huge football fan. I’m a huge basketball fan. I’m just a bigger baseball fan. And what I experienced then is something I truthfully don’t believe I’ll ever experience again because I don’t want to go 29 years between playoff playoff droughts. And then to go that long and get to the World Series and the next year winning the game, it’s almost unheard of. We just never really see that in sports. And those two years for the Royals and for me were just truly extraordinary. Well, thank you for all the questions that were sent in. Instead of a cap there needs to be a floor where so much money is the minimum that you have to spend
Garcia isn't an all-star because he doesn't have power #'s that a 3B should have
NO to MJ
Trade Mitchell, bring up Jensen to start, Dermin backup and Perez DH/1B
Trade targets- Matt Wallner, Kyle Stowers, Jurran Duran, Colton Cowser, Jake Westburg, Xavier Edwards, Ryan McMahon
Hell no to Pham
College bats and prep arms for the draft
Alex Call is not the answer he only has 2 homers
Kyle Tucker would be sweet
Loftin is not protection for Cags
We should trade sam long for a bag of chips.
Do not trade Blake Mitchell..that would be nonsensical!
Shane makes a suggestion of several players that the Royals should consider trading for not all of them obviously but I looked up their batting averages and some of them are like 220 or 251. one has .291 average but no Home runs in 300+ PA. I’m sure glad JJ Piccolo is not going to take the advice of some stranger on the Internet because it would be a mistake to trade for somebody with a 215 batting average.
Tommy Pham is a tough guy, the Royals don’t have an abundance of tough guys.
@elizabethv_royalsfan quit hating you miserable wench. Is that all you do with your free time is hate on me?
Xavier Edwards who would be leafoff batter – 291 average/18 SB/358 OBP
Colton Cowser – 230 average/8 HR/18 RBI
Matt Wallner – 205 average/9 HR/16 RBI
Jordan Westburg – 248/10 HR/20 RBI
Kyle Stowers – 279/16 HR/48 RBI
Everyone except Edwards has spent time on the IL do that is why they have low #'s but everyone of these players would jump start the offense if they played full time
