ESPN: Howie Roseman & Eagles Pulled Off HIGHWAY ROBBERY This Offseason | Eagles Offseason Grade
[Music] Let’s talk some Eagles. Go Birds. You’re watching Philadelphia Eagles now. My name is Chase Senior and no matter where you are or how you’re tuned in, thank you so much for making today’s show a part of your day and I hope everybody out there is having a fantastic weekend. Coming up here on the show, did Eagles general manager Howey Roseman do it again for Philadelphia? ESPN handing out their offseason grades. And of course, they think that Howie crushed it once again. But this article put together by ESPN is on ESPN Plus. They make you pay up to $144 a year for this type of content. Here on Eagles Now, we give it to you for free and we will never be behind a payw wall. Everything here on Eagles now 100% free for the bird gang. That’s why you hit that subscribe button and lock us in. Keep in mind that Eagles training camp is quickly approaching on July 22nd and our coverage is about to be even better. So ESPN handing out their offseason grades to all 32 teams in the NFL and they took a look at what teams did during the NFL draft during NFL free agency and ESPN handed Philadelphia a B+ grade. I think that’s pretty good considering the level of players that they lost this off season and how important of a role those respective players played during that Eagles Super Bowl championship run last year. The biggest move that Seth Walder of ESPN liked the resigning of middle linebacker Zack Bond. Couldn’t agree more. The move that ESPN liked Zack Bond resigning. Or I should rephrase this. The biggest move that the Eagles made was the Zack Bon resigning. And the move that ESPN really liked was bringing Zack Bond back. To clear up any confusion there, the move that ESPN did not like at all. Again, I’m in agreement here. Those of you who have been watching the show know that I absolutely hated the CJ Gardner Johnson deal bringing back Kenan Green and draft compensation. Seth Walder did not like that move either. And let’s begin with what ESPN had to say about the overall Eagles off seasonason. The Eagles started their Super Bowl defense with a banger, resigning defensive player of the year candidate Zack Bond to a three-year deal worth $17 million per year, $ 34 million in fully guaranteed money. Not only is Bond critical to Philadelphia’s defense, but the contract is a bit of a bargain even after just one breakout elite year. I thought that that move was a great move by Howie Roseman financially and in a way it set off the linebacker market, but a lot of other linebackers who are not to the level of Zack Bond got paid somewhere in the neighborhood of him. The 49ers paid Fred Warner more than Bond $20 million per year. And last year, I honestly think that Bon was a better player. or at least he graded out better and had such a great impact for the Eagles defense. And when the off season started after the Eagles won the Super Bowl, I had said resigning Bon is a move, the one move that the Eagles need to make. So, I’m really happy that Howie has changed his philosophy on the offball linebacker position. And I think he’s changed it because he saw how dynamic of a player, how important of a player that Bond was last year. He was incredible making plays all over the field as a blitzer, as an offball guy in coverage against the run. He was a huge part of the Eagles success during the playoffs. He was great in the Super Bowl. Had that anticipatory pick off of Patrick Mahomes, which then led to another Eagle score, putting more points on the board. And here’s how he graded out in 2024. Remember, this was his first year playing offball linebacker. Overall PFF grade was 90.1, second among 189 offball linebackers. His coverage grade number one at 91.7. Good against the run. He could be utilized as a blitzer. He had four sacks. So that ranks sixth among offball linebackers. And he also ranked number one with 69 stops. more than a hundred tackles. He was the best middle linebacker that the Eagles have had since Jeremiah Trider was an AllPro in the early 2000s. More from ESPN here. And they keep talking about Bond at $17 million per year. Bond’s deal is expensive, but far from the top of the linebacker market. Fred Warner and Shaq Leonard’s 2021 contracts were worth 29 million and 30 million, respectively. in 2025 money when adjusting for cap inflation. Plus, Jamime and Sherwin and Nick Bolton, they each sign for 15 million per year. They’re good linebackers, but I’d pay 2 million more per season to sign Bon any day of the week. And I agree. And that goes back to the point that I made earlier. You saw all of these other linebackers starting to get paid. This was the trickle down effect because the Eagle signed, what do you know it early with that bond contract that impacted the rest of the market and it set the foundation for the rest of the linebacker market and I really like that bond deal. So, let’s open up the floor here. I want you to grade the Eagles off season. ESPN handing Philadelphia a B+ grade. Better grades than I got in college at Temple. What would you grade the Eagles off season? A, B, C, D, or F? Share your thoughts with me. By the way, these Eagle Super Bowl hats still on sale thanks to our friends at Fanatics. What a phenomenal deal. There are kids sizes available and adult sizes available. All you have to do, use that link down below, chatsports.com/sup hat. It says Eagles Super Bowl 59 champions on the front and then there’s that New Orleans Super Bowl logo on the side. Going to put that link down below in the comments section, in the show notes, and attached to the pin comment of today’s Eagles. Now, we move forward. The Eagles also worked out extensions with Lane Johnson, Seaquan Barkley, and Cam Jurgens. Johnson’s deal added 8 million over the next two years and a 2027 year at 25 million, though he’s 35. Johnson is also arguably the NFL’s best tackle. So he is well worth a new deal that averages 25 million over three years below the top of the market. So another Howie Roseman move here where he signs an elite player below the top of the market. Zack Baughn allp pro Lane Johnson maybe the best right tackle of all time. How he is getting these players at a discounted rate and lane training well once again last year 85.4 for overall PFF grade, 88.1 pass blocking grade, run blocking grade of 80, goose egg for sacks allowed, and only one hit allowed. Then you had the Saquon Barkley deal that put him near the top of the running back market after adjusting for cap inflation and added more than 20 million in new fully guaranteed money. Neither Lane nor Barklay’s deals were necessary on paper, but the Eagles rewarded their stars and kept them happy while showing the locker room that they’re willing to reward top performance. The degree to which they upped Barklay’s contract seemed unnecessary and could backfire given how quickly running backs can fall off late in their careers. I voiced my concerns with that. He’s 28 now, going to be 29 in February. His birthday was the night of the Super Bowl. What a birthday to have for him and Cooper Deene. He’s had injury problems. We know how running backs can age. But when you do this and reward your players, it sets a message to the rest of your locker room how you operate as a business. It sets a message to other agents and players across the NFL that the Eagles are different. They take care of their own. This ain’t the Cleveland Browns. This ain’t a dog organization like the New York Jets. We are the class of the league. And Sequin in one year outplayed the contract that he previously got. So if he continues to even come close to what he did in 2024, that new contract, it’ll be worth it. As for Cam Jurgens, his extension more typical as a young player who can be a future building block. He ranked seventh in pass block win rate at center in 2024. It was by no means cheap, but the deal comes with plenty of upside. And the Eagles gave Cam Jurgens top of the market money as far as average annual value. Let me see where he is because then Creed Humphrey got that contract. So Cam Jurgens is second in average annual value. He’s at $17 million per year. Creed Humphrey is at 18. as far as fully guaranteed money or total guaranteed money. Let’s take a look at that. Jurgens is also number two. So once Creed Humphrey got that deal, he overtook Jurgens, but Jurgens last year was one of the top centers in the game. Hopefully that back injury is okay. It doesn’t continue to be a problem or linger. But obviously the Eagles really like to have continuity at the center position. Jason Kelce for such a long time. Hopefully now you get that with Cam Jurgens. That was a worthwhile investment in my opinion. And then there’s this. The Eagles lost some big names in free agency. Milton Williams, Josh Schwe, Mai Beckton. In all three cases, it made sense for Philadelphia to not pay market price. Williams was overpaid. The team has other arguably lesser options at edge rusher. And the Eagles probably believe they can develop other guards like they did with Beckton. Look, the Eagles were never paying Milton Williams $26 million per year. I really like him as a player, but that is an overpay as far as Josh goes. Eagles were not paying him$ 199 million. I think that’s an overpay. Plus, they really like Nolan Smith and Jay Sun, especially on cost controlled contracts. Mai Beckton one year 10. Yeah, I would have thought about bringing him back at that price or he got two years 20 $10 million per year. Easy math there. I think he was worth it. I think he would have wanted to stay. But the Eagles used the third round pick on Tyler Steen. is also much cheaper this year than Mai Beckton did. And I think that was the thought process there. The CJ Gardenner Johnson trade still hate it. The Eagles made several trades. I was not a fan of flipping Gardner Johnson and a sixth to the Texans for Kenan Green and a 2026 fifth. On the other hand, they did very well to get a fifth round pick and backup quarterback Dorian Thompson Robinson from the Browns in exchange for fellow quarterback Kenny Picket. And I thought the deal sending Bryce Huff to the Niners was a win-win considering Huff clearly didn’t fit in Philadelphia. The CJ Gardner Johnson trade, it could come back to very well haunt the Eagles. What he brought to the Eagles emotionally, from a leadership standpoint, from a physicality standpoint, the ball skills, the instincts, the two years that he was on this team, they made it to the Super Bowl. And I think it’s really hard to replace the heart and soul of that Eagles defense to a certain degree. Hopefully it doesn’t come back to bite them. I get that he’s a difficult personality to manage, but I kind of like having that edge on the Eagles roster. And then there’s the other periphery moves on this Eagles roster. The Eagles made a few low-key solid free agent additions and edge rusher Joshua Uch whose 19% pressure rate in 2022, the highest in the season since ESPN began tracking the stat in 2017. In addition to that, Azizo Gelari, cornerback Adori Jackson, Josh kind of that analytical darling at the pass rush spot. If the Eagles can get that type of player who grades highly as far as analytics like pass rush win rate and statistics like that, that could help their edge rusher depth. You need edge rusher depth. Again, you’re hoping that Nolan Smith, Jay Hunt continue to grow, but Ucha can help you as a depth piece. Ojalari when he’s been on the field, he has shown a knack for getting after the quarterback with sacks. He wins a lot. Just needs to stay healthy. And Adori Jackson is a veteran who gives you corner depth. So, a lot of these moves, I really like them. ESPN in lock step with what I’ve been saying here on the show. Grade the Philadelphia Eagles offseason: A, B, C, D or F
I’m subscribed
Let’s go birds 🦅
Go birds 🦅 and say B for sure it still a good grade
Cj move was the best, he tried to kill Malik Nabers
With CJ I feel like Philly was in a lose-lose situation. Last year it seemed like he caused a number problems internally and the eagles coaches maybe felt like had he stayed he may have caused a rift in the locker room which may have negatively impacted the play on the field in 2025. Not to mention these allegations of him putting a hit on Malik nabers which is definitely something Philly doesn’t want to be involved in with the public backlash, whether or not it’s true. Now Eagles are gonna miss his swag and attitude on the field though which is why I say it was a lose-lose situation.
B
Go Birds!!!
🦅
Gotta luv the AIRPORT N TRAIN STATION ANNOUNCEMENT of unsubbing…like anyone really carrs…
Lil hint just do it n move on…no one is going to try to change your mind, so just STFU n do it..
B Grade. Keeping CKGK would have made it an A. Let's see what Howie has has up his sleeve during cut down.
CJGJ pff run grade was 61!!!! He was bootie against the run. 117th of 171!!! I watched him get run over a dozen times. Blankenship 42nd! Thats half of it. Attitude is the other half.
A- Howie is king. We had to make a few adjustments. OlineA+, RBs-A QB-A WRs-A Dline-B+ LBs-B DBs-A-. Overall A!!!
Fan of the CJ move, dude missed a lot of tackles and while entertaining I don’t think he would have been the best choice of mentor/leader for the young secondary room.
A lot of times when a player is unexpectedly traded there's a story behind it. The team may have anticipated a problem.
With all the off the field stuff going on with cj id say we made the right move trading him
A- or B+. Really good off season but we need to see how the new players work out. I am extremely optimistic about this upcoming season. GO BIRDS!
Well, now you can't do members exclusive content ☝️🤓
I’m a big fan and so is my daughter of the Eagles love them and we adored them and went from Texas. We’re not cowboy fans or cowboy haters even though majority of my brothers and sisters are cowboy fans and we have lotta fun when football season comes around. Fly eagle fly Super Bowl bound again this year.
Mukuba in time will be a bigger impact player than CJGJ. Just as instinctive while playing A+ Assignment FB on the Level of Mitchell & Dejean. His INT iced the Double OT CFB Playoff Game
I will give my team a c because they are young for right now and let’s see what’s going to happen open day and that’s still my team
A- i believe Makuba will be better than chancey Gardner
REAL ONE! Go Birds 🦅!!!
ESPN actually nailed it on this one!!! 🦅🦅🦅
Shay Shawn will be just fine through his contract! FLY🦅FLY!!!
CJGJ was a loose cannon and often gets hurt
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅
