Nicolas Hague Discusses Trade to Nashville Predators & Reflects on Vegas Golden Knights Career

Hey, Robbie Stanley from NHL.com. Uh, welcome to Nashville. Um, a lot of reporting around there’s heavy interest in you via trade. So, what made Nashville not only a place you were comfortable with, but a comfortable a place you were comfortable extending uh when you made that decision? Yeah, I think uh I mean I’ve always heard nothing but great things about it here and uh you know talking to the guys too is uh just seems like such a great place to live and uh great place to play and uh you know always a place I loved you know visiting to play and I think it’s one of the you know best buildings and uh I I was really excited about it uh when that kind of you know came to my attention and uh I couldn’t have been I couldn’t be happier with how it all turned out. Nick Brooks Breton with the Predes. Um Barry Trotz has mentioned he’s really excited to have you not only for your size, but believes that you can be in that top four, be a really integral part of the blue line. When you hear that, what do you think and and how much are you looking forward to just the role here? Yeah, definitely. Uh I get excited, you know, about stuff like that. Um, you know, I think it’s an opportunity for me to, you know, take that next step as a player and, uh, you know, something that I’ve wanted to do for, you know, for a long time and someone I think I’m ready for. Uh, so, you know, it’s for me it’s just, you know, embracing that opportunity and, uh, you know, really, you know, showing, you know, the player I am and, uh, and what I can do out there. Jack Williams with the Hockey News. uh wanted to ask about the system that you came from in Vegas and what Bruce Cassie was applying and having a really active defense wanting to you know the defenders to be really involved with the offense going a little bit lower into the zone. I was wondering what your thoughts were just in that playing in that defense and what you could bring to Nashville. Yeah, I mean we uh in Vegas we always you know talked about playing as you know five all over the ice and that was uh you know defensively and offensively as well. So we uh you know our whole system was kind of as a unit. know defending it was you’re you’re never man- on man or uh you know one guy gets beat there’s you know you got to kind of beat us in layers uh you know so to speak so uh I you know I thought it was I thought it was good you know we obviously had a lot of success there you know playing that way and uh and you know we seem to you know click when we were there with that system so it was uh fun to be a part of for sure Nick Steve Layman CBS Nashville welcome to town you talk about taking the next step and you feel like you’re ready for What do you think the next step is in your game? Uh, I think when I, you know, I think there’s more to give offensively, you know, for my game. Uh, you know, in junior, I I was, you know, an offensive guy and, you know, when I, you know, came into the NHL, it was, uh, you know, obviously a heavy focus on defending in this league and, you know, you know, cuz that, you you’re not going to make it anywhere if you can’t do that. So, uh, I think a lot of my attention, you know, went to that side of the game. And I think I improved, you know, a lot, you know, defensively, uh, you know, when I first came into the league. And, uh, now for me, I think, you know, try to round out my game a little bit more and kind of get back to that, you know, offensive side and those instincts that I did have when I was in junior and, uh, you know, and, you know, not obviously lose the defensive part, but, you know, try to take a step on the other side of the ice as well. Elena Morris, the Tennesseeian, you spent time on winning teams in Vegas. How can that experience that you bring help get Nashville back to the playoffs? Yeah, I think it’s uh you know, the playoffs are you never really know what you’re, you know, get it into until you, you know, go through it. Um so I think just, you know, the experience of it and managing the highs and lows of, you know, what can happen throughout a playoff run or even a game or a series or whatever it is. Um, I think having to go through that is, you know, you never want to get, you know, too, you know, stressed out. If something goes, uh, something goes bad, you know, you got to get ready for the next shift and the next game and, you know, vice versa, you know, the other way. And, um, it’s a, it’s a long grind in the playoffs. And, uh, you know, I think just mentally is, uh, probably, you know, the biggest part of it. So, having, you know, gone through that before, I think it’s obviously a huge help. Nick Barry Trotz talked about your ability to play on the left or the right just playing on the right side if that’s what happens here at any point. Just what do you like about that opportunity and and what do you like most about playing on your offside if that’s the case? Uh yeah, I’ve played I’ve played a lot of both. Um actually played the right, you know, all throughout my junior career. Uh mostly on the left side in Vegas, but a little bit on the right when they when they needed me to. But, uh, I think being on the right side, uh, it opens me up for my shot more in the ozone, which is, you know, my favorite part about it. Uh, you know, always kind of, you know, I’m in the one-time position on that side. So, it’s, uh, you know, that part of it comes a little bit easier. Um, but I’m I’m comfortable on both sides, so I’ll play wherever coach puts me. Nick, I I know you weren’t here last year. Obviously, things didn’t go as planned. A couple guys have already talked about wanting to prove that last year was a fluke. We know that we’re better than that. What do you think of joining a group that already is kind of going into things with the mindset of, yeah, we’ve got something to prove here and we want to prove people wrong? Yeah, I think that’s uh that’s a powerful feeling to have as a as a team. Um I I also thought it was a fluke, by the way, like not being here. And uh I think everybody obviously had a lot higher expectations just the summer they had with the you know free agents and all that and um I will say that the year before we won in Vegas we missed the playoffs and uh and that didn’t sit well with anybody and uh and we were very hungry. Felt like we had something to prove coming into that next year and and you know obviously we’re able to do that you know to the full extent. So, uh, that’s a that’s a powerful feeling in a locker room if everybody can buy in and, uh, and, you know, have something to prove. I think it, uh, that can take a team a long way. One of the areas of improvement needed is on the blue line. When you look at the group you’re joining with Roman and Brady Shay in particular, how exciting is that to be a part of that group? Yeah, it’s very exciting. Uh, I mean, they’re obviously two of the, you know, two of the best in the league and, you know, I mean, Yos has been doing this for a long time and, uh, you know, he’s just a special special defenseman. So, um, you know, I’m really excited to be a part of it. Uh, you know, learn from those guys, play with those guys. Uh, I think it’s a great team, a great, uh, you know, group of guys, and, uh, and obviously Yos is a guy that leads the way with, uh, with that kind of stuff. Nick, obviously Vegas is a decent place to play in Nashville. Also a pretty decent place to play. What do you think of joining just from an organizational perspective and getting to play in Nashville, getting to live in Nashville for the next little bit here? Yeah, it’s, you know, something that I’m, you know, really looking forward to. It’s uh I’ve heard nothing but great things from you know I’ve talked to a bunch of the players and uh you know just being here this weekend and you know meeting people in the organization and you know everyone’s been so welcoming to uh to my wife and I and it’s uh it just it gets us so excited to be here and live here and uh and call Nashville home and uh I can’t wait to get going when the season starts. Obviously climb the mountain with Vegas with with March or so. What’s it what’s it going to be like you think reuniting with him here in Nashville? Yeah, Margie’s a really good friend. Uh yeah, guy makes me laugh. It’s it’s going to be fun to reconnect with them. Uh you know, we we got pretty close in Vegas actually over the years and uh lived right down the street from them. And so uh it’ll be good to see him and uh and Alex and the kids and uh it’ll be nice to have a familiar face around here. Anything else for Nick, guys? Hey, hey, hey.
