MLB LIVE๐ด Philadelphia Phillies vs San Diego Padres – Jul 11, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
And welcome in everybody. Glad you’re with us. MLB the show with a good one coming at you. It’s the Philadelphia Phillies and the San Diego Padres’s. First pitch coming your way next. So almost ready to get underway and on the mound today you Darvish. Yeah, he’s definitely had a struggle so far this year as evidenced by that inflated whip. But he’s going to have to find a way to limit the base runners, put his team in a position to win a ball game. So we know he’s prepared. We know this guy is a competitor and we’ll watch how he works in this one. Trey Turner, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one [Music] on the corner for a strike and the count even at one. They partnered back in 2023. Turner homered off the same pitcher twice in the same inning. Only a few players have ever done it and his were against his former team. for Washington Nationals. Last couple of pitches, breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. Darish delivers. Fouled off down the right side. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Well, a breaking ball in that 32 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. Kyle Schwarber comes up to hit here. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. He might want to steal second in this spot, but he’s dealing with a catcher that has one of the best pop times in the game. He needs to pick his spot very wisely. That’s down and in. Chris, with that distraction and the speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. Turner aboard here at first with nobody out. Really great change of speeds. He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next. [Applause] Darish kicks, delivers that one. Not close. Full countdown. Finish him. keeps the attack going with a foul ball. 3-2 fouled off and they’ll do it again. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch and ball forward to a board. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the wall. Very gritty. First and second, no outs. And now for the Phillies, Bryce Harper. Hit in the air out to center field. Merrill. He’s got it. And there’s one away. That is the third base, Alex. And time now for the Phillies lineup. This is one of the best teams in the league when it comes to drawing walks, Chris. So, we’ll probably see a very patient approach from them. Yeah, Boo. And that’s often uh what leads to a lot of runs scored. You get runners on base. You work that pitch count up for the opposing pitchers and then you take advantage when they make mistakes. You get into that bull pit. You can tell that everyone up and down this lineup just comes in with a great plan of attack. A lot of patience just like you said. [Applause] Alec B in the box now. Takes strike one. Really good job in this spot to get ahead in the count. He’s going to have to continue finish off this hitter. [Applause] edge of the zone for a strike and it’s nothing in two. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. Rolled to short. possible two ball. Bogarts toss the second and that’s two. Got the batter to hit it exactly where he wanted that textbook 643 double play gets out of the jam and back in the dugout. Back here at Petco Park and on the mound for Philadelphia in this one, Taiwan Walker singing he’s kind of a road warrior. Yeah, I definitely say so. You know, some guys shrink a little bit on the road. They’re so used to just, you know, having the comforts of being at home and having the fans behind them, but this guy seems to thrive in adversity and being in some hostile environment. So, when you have a player like this on your team that goes out there and competes, you definitely like your chances away from your home ballpark. Out in front and fouled to the left side. Here comes the 01 ball. One ball, one strike. [Applause] High chopper to third and that chance handled. Whips it to first. One up, one down. Let’s take a look at the Padres’s lineup. They’re dealing with a sicker specialist on the mound, which can be a big time challenge when he’s right and working mostly from the knees down. Well, I think the approach you take is really try to lay off of those pitches down in the zone until he gets some called strikes and then forces you to go after that pitch. Until then, make him elevated because guys that throw those sinkers, those two seamers, really hard for them to be effective up in the zone. Those are pitches you can hammer and when you get a cookie, you don’t want to miss it. And puts the squeeze on that one. And there are two down. Hey man, four pitches, two outs. That is an excellent base. Two down, base is empty. And now it’s Manny Machado. Another solid power season. Obviously a guy who makes good contact, hits for average. But one of the things in today’s game, the value in the fact that he hits both righties and lefties. and first offering is fouled off. They’re so reliant on the matchups nowadays, Chris, and it’s huge when you don’t have to sit a guy or platoon him. When you can hit, you know, both sides in terms of pitcher arms, you’re a guy that it’s hard to take out of the light up. And I think it’s very important today when everything is under the microscope. Batting fourth, no left fieldielder. So, two down. Now, it’s going to be Gavin Sheets. first offering and it just misses. Machado leads off first with two down to the inning. Next offering in there for a strike and the count one and one. Let’s go. The 1-1 is fouled off. Two outs. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. [Music] And he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. Padres’s leave one. We played an inning, no score. Back here in San Diego, Nick Castanos at the plate now. Nick Castano. Well, here’s an interesting stat on Darvish. He has more than a 100 wins in his big league career. The only Japanese-born pitcher with more wins is Hideon Nommo, my former teammate. Tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. Gets a piece and stays alive. swings through that one. It’s a strike out. And stepping in the rookie left fielder [Applause] in for a strike. 0 and one. [Applause] swings through that one out in front that time. Joe McDonald doing the home play duties here. Well, Joe’s an interesting one. I’m always trying to figure out what exactly his zone is. Feels like it kind of moves around from game to game, sometimes inning to inning. Strike three and that’s two in a row. And he’ll be beating himself up on the way back to the dugout. Got a pitch to hit and just couldn’t get to it. I think that slider really caught way more of the plate than it was supposed to. Two outs, space is empty. And here is Sosa to the plate. He swings and hits a fly ball center field. Got it. Nice grab. And that’ll do it. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. And welcome back to the ballpark. We head to the bottom of the second. Digging in, Jackson Merrill. Merrill. [Applause] Late swing. Foul to the left. That’s a little bit low. that one down the line and that’s a fair ball around first. Digging for two. The throw into second and he’s going to get to second with nobody out. Just found a way to slap that ball down the third baseline. That’s really excellent back control. And it kind of goes back to all those drills you see hitters do off the tea where it’s placed in different spots. That was just nice. And a dangerous hitter coming up to hit in Xander Bogarts. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. Slice the other way. That’s a base hit. Brown’s third headed for the plate. The throw is offline and he’s in to score. And it’s one- nothing. Well, that started and ended pretty quickly. No messing around right there. That pretty much split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay. Now here’s Jake Croninworth. Runner on the go. Swing in a bouncer out to short the throw to first. That’s one out in the bottom of the second. Batting it the first baseman, Trenton. Trenton Brooks. the next to hit. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. That one finds the zone. Strike one. There it was. Oh, here it is. Hit it. He gets a take. Gets ahead in the count. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. Ball one there. [Applause] Next pitch misses. Two and two. Two two. Swing at a ball lifted to center field. Rojos makes the grab for the second half. Batting night, the catcher, Elias. Diaz. Here’s Elias Diaz. [Applause] Full one in the dirt. Blocked [Applause] and a pitch. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. [Applause] Man on second. Two down. Two balls, one strike. [Applause] Swing and a miss. It’s two and two. Two strikes. Hit in the air left field. He’s there. He’s got it. And that is that. But the RBI single pushes across a run. It’s an early one- nothing lead. Back after this on the show. And we’re back. Here’s the catcher, Raphael Maron. Raphael. Marawn in his third season, 26 years old. And he was born in Venezuela. First pitch just misses. Back door breaking ball just missed right there. And boy, umpire didn’t give him the call. I bet you if he throws it again, hitter knows he’s going to have to swing it. [Music] Fought off. Foul. Swang at a highf fly ball. Well struck. Tatis ranging back and it’s off the wall. And that’s a leadoff double. Really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. Just missed out on a home run right there, but he certainly hit it hard enough. just didn’t have the right launch angle to carry it over the wall, but still an excellent swing at the bat. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Here’s a speed threat, Johan Rojas. He’s one of the faster guys just by pure sprint speed in the majors. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Man at second. Outside corner. There’s a strike. Here’s [Applause] the O2. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Marawn stands at second with no outs. sit down. And that’s a little bit high. Now one and two. That’s a really good job of laying off the O2 high fast ball is going to make that pitcher really have to respect this hitter even though he’s behind in the count. [Music] Two two Strike three went back to the sweeper and got the strike down. And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base. And the defense breeds the sigh relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. Keep him off balance, get him out of there, and deal with the next guy. So the batting order turns over. Here’s Turner now. Work to walk in his first trip to the plate. Right down to shoot. It’s 0 and one. [Applause] Runner at second here. One gone. Strike two. Quickly in an 02 count. You got to figure out a way to shorten your path to the baseball. Put it in play somewhere. Then you got a chance. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Stop sign goes up at third. Runners at the corners with one out. Well, that’s a smart decision to hold up with one out and the heart of the order coming up. Don’t want to run into an out at home plate. And Kyle Schwarber will come up. He reached out to walk his first time [Applause] and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. This might be a steel situation, but that’s not your average catcher behind the dish. You have to be careful here. [Applause] Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock in to score from third. It’s an RBI single. It’s 1-1. Not in time. He’s safe. Gets it done to drive in the run and tie it back up. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know, they used to say charge it crazy. Here comes Bryce Harper. Fly to center his first time. He’s 0 for one. This one ripped but fouled to the right. Well, that ball is hit pretty hard and sure had home run distance, but if you’re the pitcher out there on the mound, you execute it. Just a long strike. You go after him and finish him off. Double play ball to second on Bogard and they bounce into two already. This one ends the third, but they pick up one run on the RBI single. All even at one a piece. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here at Beco Park as we go to the last of the third. Up now. The Padre leadoff man Fernando Tatiz Jr. Walker back to work. That pitch in for a strike and it’s 0 and one. and strike two. No ball. Two strikes. [Music] Swing through it and that’s a strike out. Well, take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty similar in terms of putting them away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. Luis Arise stands in. He’s 0 for one. First pitch misses. One ball, no strike. [Music] San Diego swinging a ground ball and that quickly two away. The third baseman number 13, Manny Machado. Here’s Manny Machado. One for one with a single so far. [Applause] And first offering is fouled off and that skips in the dirt. Tied up here in the early going. Swing and a ground ball base hit right field. And that keeps the inning alive. Here’s Gavin Sheets now. Left-hand bat. Went down on strikes his first time through. And a foul ball. [Applause] Two gone. But the go-ahead run is at first here in the last half of the third. All right, that one almost got him. That’s a ball. That one fouled off. Two and two. [Music] Machado, the runner at first with two gone. Swing and a miss. And that is that. So one hit is all they get. Three innings complete. All tied 1-1. Back here in San Diego as we go to the top of the fourth. Now the third baseman Alec Bowie right through there for a strike. You know these Phils showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. He’s only given up one run but the starter pitch count is starting to get up there and that might be the best news yet for this offense. the one-1 and downstairs. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage and that might be the case today. Outside low. Three balls in a strike. Three balls, one strike on the ground right side onto first. And one gone in the fourth as they get the lead off. Man, well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Here’s Nicholas Castillanos. Struck out swinging his first time. Swing and a highf fly ball pulled foul and that’s out of play. [Music] Strike two. Generally, second, third time through the lineup, you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Looks like he’s doing a nice job of it. One down, base is empty. Swing and a miss. And he got him. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. That’s that classic wipe out slider below the zone right there. Just nasty. Looks like a fast ball thigh high that you got to protect the zone and then it’s just that late break that fools you and kind of makes you look silly. [Applause] Here’s the left fielder and first offering is fouled off. ball. The guy at the plate could recognize slider out of the hand. Didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception. He knew right away it was an offspe pitch. The next offering misses and a count two and one. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. Swing and a highf fly ball out towards right field. Tatis makes the catch and that is that. We go to the bottom of the fourth. Tied 1-1. And welcome back to the ballpark. Ready to go. Bottom four. Now here is Jackson Merrell and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. You know, these Padres’s just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see, but I think they have to. Fouls that off to the left and will do it again. [Music] [Applause] Misses off the play. Now one and two. Really good take especially with two strikes. Hit on the ground to the right side and it goes just foul that misses. It’s two and two. Oh, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. Boom. Makes the catch and there’s one gone. The batter number two, shortstop, Xander. Here’s Bogards now. RBI single his last time up. Come on, jump in the zone for a strike. That was the sweeper. Oh, he’s looking great so far. It helps when over 80% of your first pitches are strikes. He might be able to go the distance if he keeps this up. [Applause] The 1-1 is fouled off. [Music] So K marks the at bat for X. Here’s the second base. Jon grounded out his first time up. Worth just missed. Two outs. Base is empty. [Music] [Applause] the one right through there for a strike. Good job to fight that one off. Inside the count now two and two out to short. Turner over to first. Padres’s go down one, two, three. Nothing doing there for the Friars. Still tied 1-1. And we’re back. We go to the top of the fifth and stepping in is the speedy and Mundo Sosa. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Over 80% of his first pitches are strikes. You’re doing that, you could have a really good day out there on the mound. Strike two. Just a really nice slider down and in there. He wants to get the hitter thinking fast ball. Speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement. Swinging a ball lifted left field. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out and there’s one down at the plate. Raphael Marawn a double and a run. Scored his first time up. Fouled off. He was late. One out. Base is empty. And a foul ball. And the O2 and a swing and a miss. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. Really love the pitch sequence right there. I’m telling you what, pitcher and catcher on the same page right now. Johan Roas. Johan Rojas stands in for the Phillies. 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. And the first pitch misses for ball one. All tied up and we’re in the top of the fifth. Next offering is in for a strike. This game has been so tight. Feels like the next team to score will win it. That catches the outside corner and the count one and two. Two strikes. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Struck him out. So he picks up his sixth strike out of the ball game. Phillies go down quietly in the inning. Score remains tied 1-1. Back here at Petco Park, we head to the bottom of the fifth. So digging in now for San Diego, Trenton Brooks. Pitch misses inside. One and0. You know, these Padres’s, as this game goes on, have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’ve been chasing pitches outside the zone all game, and it’s led to some frustrating moments. They’ve been fooled quite a bit today. Fouled off left side. Next offering upstairs. Two ball. Two strikes. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. [Music] Foul ball left side. He’ll see another [Music] that just misses. Three and two now. It’s a lead off walk and that’s the go-ahehead run. Just missed his spot on the inside right there. Now batting the catcher and now it’s Elias Diaz. See you. Come on. And that’s off the inside edge. And that’s ball one. Stirring in the Phillies bullpen. Ranger Suarez, a left-handed reliever, appears to be getting loose. Sanchez, the power lefty up as well. [Applause] And another ball. Brooks gets his lead at first. Nobody out. Next pitch is outside. Well, I would expect in this three-0 count, you’re taking all the way. See if they’ll walk you. Fernando Tatis Jr. in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. There’s a strike on this count. Runner not known for his speed, but I think you got to put him in motion. Try to avoid a double play here, Boo. And that’s in for a strike. Runner at first with no outs here. That one lifted to left. Moving back for this one. And it’s caught for the out. Now batting right fielder Vernono Tatis Junior. So man aboard one down and it’s Tatis at the plate. 0 for two in this one. First pitch doesn’t find a zone. Way to lay off that pitch down. Swaging a drive deep left field and brings it in at the wall. [Applause] That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. The pitcher’s his friend. He’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. So, here’s the Padres’s DH. Luis Arazz. There’s a swing and a try. This one looks like trouble. Lead runner touches second, headed for third. And that’s a two out double. Well, here we are. Third time through the order. And this is where we see the OPS jump up. Manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. And the Phillies manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make a move. Taiwan Walker done for the night. And that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today. gave him some length. Back with a new arm after this. Now pitching for the new pitcher in the game, Ranger Suarez. He’s thrown the ball very well overall this season. He’s been really tough to get to. You see that erra and that’s where you love to be. Here comes Manny Machado. He’s two for two. Downing ball here. Rolls foul. [Applause] Strike two. And there’s a real chance they get out of this without allowing a run. [Applause] Pitch misses there. And the count one and two, two outs, two in scoring position. Last half of inning number five. That’s offering misses and it’s three and two. Gavin Sheets in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Ground ball left side down the line and it’s fouled. [Applause] That one backed up the middle and it gets through. One runs in. A second scores as well. It’s 3-1. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch run, scoring it back. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. Two outs, runner on first. Next up is the cleanup spot for the Padres’s, Gavin Sheets. It immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. When you’re taking your lead over there at first, you got to be very careful. This guy on the mountain’s got a good pickoff move. And the lefty with the 01 just missed. [Applause] Next one misses. Now two balls in a strike. [Music] Rips one to right and foul ball. in the air center field. Rohos settles under this one, makes the catch and that’ll do it. So, it’s two runs on two hits, no errors, and a runner left. Five innings complete. It’s the Padres’s three and the Phillies won. Back here in San Diego, all set for the top of the sixth and digging in for Philadelphia. Trey Turner. Darvish back to work. Pitch misses. Ball one. Turner in his ninth season. 31 years old. A former first round pick back in 2014. That misses. Two balls, no strikes. Right through there for a strike [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] fans. Another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Now back. Here comes Schwarz to the plate. A walk and he’s also singled. Well, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning. Anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. The Padres’s holding on to a two-run lead and we’re in the top half of the sixth. That misses and that’s ball one. just missed with that back door breaking ball. If he gets a swing and miss or called strike, 02 count instead. It’s 1-1. Look for him to go back to that pitch later in this at bat. Just off the inside edge. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. Very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with that one. Fouled off. One down, base is empty. Make it four strikeouts in a row. Just cruising along. Chris third time through the order and a couple of quick outs for the starter. Yeah, he’s been very frugal today. Economical with the pitch count. Here’s Bryce Harper. [Music] And there’s the strike. No ball. One strike. Right side hard hit. Croninworth throws on the first. Harper retired. Darvish gets a one, two, three. Three up, three down for him. There we go to the bottom half of inning number six and the 567 slots two up. It’s the Padres’s three and the Phillies one. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the sixth inning. Stepping in Jackson Merrill. Merrill. You know, the first manager to ever win a game here at Petco Park was Tony Gwyn. Yes, Tony Gwyn. They had a college baseball tournament here in March 2004, and Tony managed San Diego State to a win. That one ripped right center field. That’ll make it out of here. He made him pay for that one. It’s his sixth home run of the season. and they add to the lead. It’s 4-1. That’s a swing that’ll boost the win probability for sure. [Applause] A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. Here’s Xander Bulgard’s [Applause] right through there for a strike. [Applause] Swing and he breaks his bat. Tosses to first. Bogart’s retired. Got to feel pretty good for the pitcher. Absolutely saw it off. Bat explodes and then he makes an easy play on it. Pretty satisfying if you’re out there on the ball. Jake Croninworth the next up for the Padres’s. That pitch in for a strike. Go and one. [Applause] right side. Sosa fires over to first. That takes care of Croninworth. Now batting first baseman Trenton Brooks. Two down, base is empty. And here is Trenton Brooks. [Applause] There’s a strike at the knees and one. That big curve inside a pitch that can buckle you a little bit. Looks like a fast ball out of the hand and then just drops over that inside part of the plate. The O2 swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit and that keeps the inning going. Nice. The catcher number seven Diaz now at the plate. Diaz. [Applause] First pitch misses. One ball. No strike. Brooks off of first with two away. That clips the zone. One ball, one strike. Tap foul at the plate. Two outs. [Applause] Up the middle. Oh, what a stop to first. And that’s a nice play to end the inning. Making it look easy at the Keystone position. Definitely worth another look. He’ll get some high fives when he gets into the dugout. And we’re back. And here comes Alec Balm. The Phillies in striking distance but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laidoff man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. Liner snagged at first. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting the line drive that finds a glove. But you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. This lineup is having a tough time finding a good rhythm at the plate. Their swings are disjointed, which tells me they’re having issues with pitch recognition. This pitcher has done a good job of disrupting the hitter’s timing with the mix of pitches and changing speeds. You want to keep that front foot inconsistent for the batter. Their swings are hesitant, and that’s exactly what you want on the mound. Sheets makes the grab and there’s two gone. [Applause] Now batting number four. Two out, space is empty. Now the left fielder. That missed by a lot and it’s one and0. I’ve gotten to call some incredible NLDS games here at Petco Park between the Padres’s and their fierce rivals, the LA Dodgers. NLDDS game four here in 22 when the Padres’s knocked off LA and then game four in 2024 when the Dodgers started their comeback at eventual run to the World Series. One of the great fan environments in baseball comes up empty. That’s strike two. And it really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today. Good fast ball, excellent slider, but they’ve not been able to commit to one velocity and stay there. Swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field and they have their first hit since the third inning. The batter, the second base, Ed Mundo Sosa. Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. That does it for you, Darvish. And he was very good. They’ll be happy with that. No doubt. We’ll be back with a new pitcher in a minute. Now pitching for the So they turn to the veteran pitcher in this spot, Jason Adams. He last pitched two days ago. [Applause] Edmundo Sosa getting ready to hit. Ball one low. Just missed. swings through that one for strike one. As a hitter, you got to learn something from that pitch. You clearly wasn’t timed up on the fast ball in a 200 count. You have to be ready to do damage. Next offering is in for a strike. No need to offer that pitch until you get to two strikes. It’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch. [Music] [Applause] Ball three. 3-2. Two out. Runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. Raphael Marawn waiting in the on deck circle. They can get him up. He’d represent the tying run. So critical pitch right here. Two outs. Swinging a foul ball at the plate. They’ll do it again. away. Battling here as he fouls it away. Goes down looking. Philly strand one. And this is still a 41 ball game. [Applause] Now pitching for we’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Daniel Robert just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Now it’s Fernando Tatis Jr. 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. Junior And that one sliced fouled. And that one is lifted in the air. Makes the grab on the run. One away. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. The rise forced to get out of the way of the first pitch. [Music] That’s a strike across the top of the zone. Some bullpen action for Philadelphia. Orion Kirkery up and throwing. Sanchez, a left-hander, also throwing [Music] it. That one almost got him. 2-1. Base is empty, one away here in the bottom of the seventh. You got this. And that one is downstairs. Three and one now. on strike. Let’s go. Line drive base hit and the Padres’s have a man aboard with one out. The third baseman number 13 Manny now. Machado up here. Three for three with three singles. And that’s in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. That one is absolutely belted. That’s back. Out of here. [Music] Manny Machado leaves the yard. His 16th homer of the year. And they add a couple more. It’s 6-1. And that shot makes their grip on the lead even tighter. [Applause] Well, he put a really nice swing on that one and everything was on time. took a direct path to the ball, excellent extension, and just drove it out of here. Nothing better than when the ball jumps off your bat like that. Base is empty, one away. Here’s the cleanup hitter for the Padres’s, Gavin Sheets. First pitch, and he just misses. One ball, no strike. [Applause] And that’s a strike. Still only one out here in the inning. [Applause] High in the air out to right. He won’t get there. That should be extra bases. He’s in at second with a one out double. That’s now three hits in a row for the offense. pretty much just a textbook double into the gap. And when you can drop one in there between the outfielders, you know you’re making the turn at first. Just an excellent swing. And the Phillies manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make a move. Daniel Robert will depart and he’s responsible for the runner on second, so the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. Now pitching for on the mound now Christopher Sanchez number 61 and with the big deficit on the scoreboard he almost has to just put that out of his mind. Every outing matters for relievers in their numbers. But I think it’s tough to get up for this type of appearance the same way you would for one in a close game. So up next, Jackson Merrill. He’s already homered in this game. outside low. One and0. Sheets the runner at second with one away. [Applause] [Applause] Puts it in the air out towards left center. Sizing this one up. Carous it. Two down. The batter number two, shortstop, Xander Bogart. Here comes Xander Bogarts. [Applause] Ball one. No strikes. 10. The shorts stop takes the ball to count [Applause] and that one hit 97 on the gun. Oh, he never moved cuz he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. That’s a strike. Three and one [Applause] and that one fouled off. Runner at second. Two down. [Applause] So now two on and two outs. Man, that’s a tough one to take on the full count, but I guess he saw it really well. A really nice plate appearance. First and second, two outs. Now it’s the second baseman, Jake Croninworth. Three ground outs already. He’s 0 for three. And that misses. And that’s ball one. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. Coming home, here’s the throw to the plate. It’s offline. The run comes in. It’s 71. First and second, two down. And now here is Trenton Brooks. First pitch just misses. One ball, no strike. [Applause] Two on, two outs. And that finds the mark on the outside corner. That is strike two. First and second, two down. swings and misses. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. So they get three runs on four hits, no errors, but two are left stranded. Eighth inning coming up. It’s the Padres’s seven and the Phillies won. This game’s a bit of a blowout. Singy, let’s talk about something random. Let’s do it. All right, Singy, let’s rewind for a second. When you heard that they were going to put a pitch clock into the game, what was your first thought? Well, I thought that these guys were going to have a very difficult time to be able to regroup after each pitch and be ready to execute some type of plan at the plate and even for pitchers on the mound. One of the things though that we’ve seen that is kind of a thread really in every sport, these are the elite players and so they adjust and they’ve done a great job adjusting. Absolutely. And just you tip your cat to these guys because not an easy adjustment, but they look like they’ve been doing it their entire lives. And it’s fouled away. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] And now it’s even up. Two balls, two strikes. Diego. This one chopped to first. Brooks steps on first for the out. Now batting the center fielder, Johan Rojos. So digging in now for Philadelphia, Johan Rojos. And the first pitch misses for ball one. So, I can’t play around with him here. It’s a six-run lead at this point. Got to attack hitters even if you give up a solo shot. Struggled a little bit in this one. Couple of strikeouts earlier, but doing a much better job in this at bat to get ahead and find a good hitter’s count at 2 and 0. One down, base is empty. There’s the strike. One way to make a guy real uncomfortable at the plate is pound him inside with good velocity. They’re doing that right here. Next offering upstairs [Music] check swing called strike. Full count. The Padres’s up big in this one and we’re in the top of the eighth. swings through that and it’s a strike out and two away now. Well, they’ve had a great plan of attack for tonight. I mean, finding all the holes in his swing and his approach just frustrating for him up there. You strike out a guy three times in a game. I think that guy’s got to go back and really study some video with his hitting coach, figure out how they’re beating him. Make this adjustment really quick because Word will get around the league in a hurry. Trey Turner at the plate. There’s the strike. [Applause] Two down. Nobody in there at the knees for a strike. Oh, this guy’s so comfortable hitting with two strikes. Even a good pitch early in the at bat. If he’s not ready to pull the trigger, he’s not worried if he gets to an 02 count. And there’s a ball. Well, he missed badly with that 02 fast ball. Hitter has to understand probably wants to try to put him away with that pitch. So, got to stay ready for it. The short stop takes the ball. That misses full countdown now. I keeps the AB going. [Music] So Trey goes down on strikes. Phillies down in order. They’re down 7 to one. Back here at Petco Park out of the bottom of the eighth. Stepping in for San Diego, Elias Diaz. And that one a little below the knees. And that is ball one. Stirring in the Phillies bullpen. Orion Kirkering appears to be getting loose. missed with a change up and that’s ball two. Two balls, one strike. That one missed. [Applause] Swinging a foul out of play. That one misses. So a lead off walk. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 32 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. Man at first, nobody out. Fernando Tatiz Jr. to hit here. 0 for four. A couple of fly outs. He’s also grounded out and struck out. And ball one. [Music] Nobody out. Runner at first. And that one clips the corner. Got him swinging. The designated hitter Luis Rice the next up for the Padres’s Roy. Let’s keep it going. That one off the mark. Ball one. [Applause] Next one is off the plate. Ball three. Diaz over at first with one away. Next offering in there for a strike and a count is three and one and ball four to a board. The third baseman number 13, Manny. So, one out with two aboard. Next for the Padres’s, Manny Machado. He’s already homered here in this one. Just missed. [Music] That’s down and in. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. One out. Runners at first and second. Highf fly ball right field. Castanos gets under it. He makes the catch and there’s two down. the left fielder number 30, Gavin Sheets. So, first and second with two outs. Gavin Sheets the next up for the Padres’s. He’s been a great free agent sign and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. [Music] [Applause] Let’s go. Next offering is fouled back. Two outs. Swings and misses. Struck him out. Padres’s leave a pair and they’re on top seven to one. Now pitching. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Yuki Matsui. He’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season. So, this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. So, here’s the Phillies DH Kyle Schwarber. Kyle, he’s not going to get cheated up there. No, he’s not. He’s looking to do damage with every swing he takes. Just off the inside edge. [Applause] late on that fast ball. I think he was sitting off speed there [Applause] in the dirt and it’s two and one. [Music] [Applause] Swing and a pop off in foul ground. brings it in and there’s one down. Good hard fast ball up in the zone right there. Looked really good coming in, but so hard to get on top of as a hitter. Here comes Bryce Harper 0 for three in this one. [Applause] And first offering is fouled off. Base is empty, one away. You’re in the top of the ninth. Swinging a ground ball up the middle. Bogarts with the throw to first. Now only one out remaining. Now batting the third baseman, Alec B. And now it’s Alec Bow. Come on. [Applause] First pitch misses. Bullpen action for the Padres’s. Brian Hoing, the right-handed sinker baller. He looks to be readying himself. Peralta, the lefty, warming up as well. [Applause] And it’s even up. From a pitcher’s perspective, that’s a beautiful splitter right there. there as a hitter. You don’t like it, but he’s commanded his fast ball. And out of that same tunnel, that splitter comes and the bottom just falls out of it. Pitch misses outside and it’s two and one. [Applause] Matsui is just one strike away. And there’s a ball. That turns out to be a really good take right there. But you don’t want to end this game with the bat on your shoulder. [Music] [Applause] Lifted in the air out to left and it falls. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. Around that pitch on the outside, but he was still able to square it up pretty nicely. And that takes quick, strong wrist to pull that off. So digging in, Nick Castanos 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. And that’s in there for strike one. Boom leads off first with two down to the inning. [Applause] ball. Squirts away a little bit. [Music] [Applause] Right through there for a strike. [Applause] That misses the zone. And that’s ball two. [Music] [Applause] Fast ball is outside. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. That one ripped. This looks like extra bases coming home. He will score. Well, that worked out as good as it could have. We mentioned the RBI opportunity with the runner moving on the 3-2 pitch and he cashed in by finding a hole in the outfield. You know, that takes a little extra concentration in the box because of the movement on the base pass. Easy to get distracted. So, that was a really nice job there. Here’s the left fielder, one for three. And that clips the inside corner. [Applause] man on second. Two down on the ground right side and foul ball. [Applause] Check swing on an 02. Appeal to first. No swing. He held up. Carl Dixon with the call there. Hit to right and that should do it. That’s the ball game. Whether you’re a season ticket holder or you just come to a couple of games a year to see your team win at home, there’s just something special about that. Good job by this team to get it done for the hometown fans. 72 your final here today for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami.
