at second base, batting eighth and batting ninth. Miles Straw is in center field. As I mentioned earlier, Joy Lo Profido was initially in the lineup and was scratched uh about an hour ago at this point after being diagnosed with a an illness essentially. So, we’ll see what that what that looks like, if he’s fine for tomorrow. Maybe he was just feeling sick. We’re not sure, but um certainly hope Lopeito is feeling better. And of course, as you mentioned, Sherzer makes another start for the Blue Jays tonight. I did want to read a couple texts here, Nick, before Ray say goodbye. We have a couple minutes left. Uh, Peter from Toronto, 590 590. Name and location. Go easy on Vlatty. He’s a well above well above average first baseman and hustles his butt off. The hitting will be fine. I think that’s a a completely valid way to view the struggles of Vlatty because I think even even the word struggles I do think denotes something more negative than what has gone on. You know what I mean? Like I think the way you illustrated it earlier, he’s been very good. But I think you and I think fans that say, “Well, you know what? You don’t pay $500 million for very good.” I think you are justified in that to a certain extent, but again an OPS of 820 will play for most teams. You just want a little bit more from Vlatty and and I think he can get there. I think there is a level we have not seen this year because we have seen that level in years past. Yeah, there’ll be plenty of time to complain when the team itself is underperforming. But there is so much to enjoy with the Blue Jays right now that fixating on the fact that Vlatty has been objectively good but not as good as you personally want does not seem like the best way to get the ultimate enjoyment you can out of being a Blue Jays fan. There’s another text here from Bob in Burlington who kind of takes the opposite view of this. Bob who we appreciate who text often. Bob says show my disappointment in Vlad this season has only exceeded by wasted money and energy on Sherzer and Santandere. Now look, I I can understand the eyeire towards Sherzer and Santandere because let’s face it, they were I would say along with Jeff Hoffman, they were the biggest acquisitions of the off season. We can throw in Andre Jimenez there if you want to, but in terms of like signings and not trades, which Jimenez was a trade, uh I think you do look at Hoffman, Sherzer, Santandere, I guess it was Hoffman, Santandere, Sherzer in that order when it comes to those three in particular. And yeah, I totally get I mean, Sherzer, uh, we just talked about him, but he’s not pitched a ton for the Blue Jays this season. And Santandere has been signed relatively long term and has given you virtually nothing. I will say, as far as Santandere goes, I do think I give it some grace only because it’s like what, three, four months essentially into a multi-year career for Santandere. I’m willing to bet based on his entire body of work that when it’s all said and done, you’ll probably be happy with what you’ve gotten from Santandere. That doesn’t make the short term any easier to stomach because you’ve gotten almost literally nothing from him and he has not helped your team win in any meaningful way. So, I do get being frustrated with it. I I’m less I’m less upset about Sherzer just because it was a one-year deal. So, I feel like are there really any bad one-year deals? I personally I I I tend to lean on the side of no, especially when your team does have a pretty large checkbook to to offer to other people. So I don’t think like any other anything was lost by giving Sherzer like whatever it was 13 or $15 million in the end. But I am curious what you what you think of that. Yeah, I mean with Santandere for instance, you know, you’re talking about 50 games played and as you said it’s a five-year contract and it is not like he’s a player that had a reputation for being injuryprone. It’s not like you brought someone on it’s like, “Oh, this guy always gets injured.” And guess what? He got injured again. That’s a terrible move. Like in the previous 3 years, he played 152, 153, and 155 games. So, as far as I’m concerned, the Santandere thing, it’s bad luck. Like, he had been a really strong hitter the previous years. He got off to a slow start, which he always does, and then he got hurt. That’s rough. That has hurt the team, but I don’t think that’s really anyone’s fault in terms of player evaluation or Santandere. With Sherzer, there was an element of risk that you always knew about. And to be honest, he’s already sort of missed enough time that at the end of the day, it’s extremely unlikely that the Jays will have quote unquote gotten value for Sherzer. Like, you know, he’s missed enough and he’s been limited when he’s played. You probably, if you’re going to account for it, like dollars to onfield value, it’s not going to add up. So, I get it. At the same time, he’s someone who probably brings some off-field value that we aren’t going to be able to quantify. Having him around can only be helpful. an immensely knowledgeable guy, great stature in the game, and he’s been around the team a lot even when he’s been injured. And so I I don’t think you feel as bad about it. It’s an opportunity cost thing. I guess he could have put that money against somebody else. But I don’t know if at this point in the season again where the Jays are really doing well and Sherzer is now pitching again, you find yourself mad at that contract in retrospect, uh I don’t know. It just feels like there are some other things you could focus on with the team. I do think Sherzer, like I I do get it, don’t get me wrong. Like I do understand because to your point about opportunity cost, maybe there was another another way of spending that money, but I’m with you like that they have been able to weather the storm. I maybe like doesn’t necessarily change it in hindsight, but I do think that ultimately if you get anything from Sherzer going forward, even if it’s not what you imagined, I mean like my bold prediction this year was that Sherzer would pitch 125 innings for the Blue Jays. Something tells me that’s not going to happen this year. It’s going to be tough. It’s going to be really tough to get there, especially if he’s only going like four two/3 or five innings every fifth day. between now and the end of the year. I’m not sure that’s going to be a bold prediction to remember from on on my end, but I yeah, I mean I I think ultimately with Sherzer, I’m not going to complain too much about it because it’s a mistake that won’t haunt and again you can classify it as a mistake if you want to, but if even if you do, it’s it’s one that won’t haunt this team beyond this year. Like there was no deferred money. He is getting all of it this year. He’s probably almost certainly not going to be a Blue Jay next year. And I mean, we’ve talked about the starting rotation at length over the course of the season, right, Nick? But I mean, you know, you even if you even if you believe in the in the most charitable sense that Lowour will be a part of the rotation next year, with Bassin and Shurer are gone, you still have to figure out two additional spots next year. So I I still think you have a path to rectifying if you believe this is a mistake going forward, which I think means ultimately it’s not something that harmed you too much, even if it’s was an egregious mistake, which frankly I don’t I don’t think it was. The hidden cost of the Sher acquisition and how things have gone down is that the team was then required to be probably more patient with Bow and Francis than they should have been because they just didn’t have viable options to lean on. And so I guess if you had a different pitcher there then maybe you could have turned to someone sooner and demoted well it was an injury in the end with Francis but you could have demoted Francis and so things might have been a little bit smoother early in the season. There might be a win there that got lost somewhere along the line. I get it and it’s a close race but they there have been worse mistakes in the history of the Toronto Blue Jays. The Well, try the Shell V Power Nitro Plus premium gasoline fueling every drive with a fuel like no other. Chris, let’s take a look at the Toronto Blue Jays starting lineup. That’s probably all we’re going to have time for right now. Leading off is Nathan Lucas. He’s in left field. Dhing. Batting second is George Springer. Batting third is Vladimir Guer Guerrero Jr. He’s at first base. At shorts stop in the cleanup spot is Bo Bashette. Batting fifth is Addison Barger. He’s in right field tonight. Batting sixth. Behind the dish is Alejandro Kirk. Batting seventh is Will Wagner. He’ll play third base. Batting eighth is Ernie Clement. He’s at second base. And batting ninth is Miles Straw. He’s in center field. On the mound is Max Scherzer. Well, we did only get to the Jays. That means we got to put in a little extra work now in the bottom half of the inning when we get to the A. So, I’ll make you go to work yet again as we are underway. First pitch coming at 10:05 Eastern time. The first pitch is a strike. And it looked like on that first pitch, Luis Severino might have hurt himself as he dropped down to one knee, his right knee. And now Langaliers comes out to the mound. The training staff comes out to the mound and they’re going to have a look at Severino. I don’t know what happened, but it seemed like that right foot got caught. He’s He was limping a little bit. Seems fine now. The training staff is out. Shay Langalers is out. Everybody is having a chat with him, but they’re staring at the mound. Doesn’t look like this is very serious, but this is a a guy that’s complained about this stadium, about this field pretty often. I’m assuming this is just another chapter in that book. Well, with due respect, he’s probably complaining because he doesn’t like his record either. I mean two and 10 on the season, but specifically at home, he has not pitched well or not had success. Of course, the athletics playing in Sacramento. Looks like Severino is going to be okay. He’s going to stay in the ball game. Shakes things off, gets back on the mound and fires a pitch in a little bit too high outside. It looked like it might have caught the edge of the zone, but Lucas gets the call. It’s one and one. the 1-1 pitch. That one fouled off by Nathan Lucas and he’s now down in the count, one and two. And you mentioned those splits. Those splits are are are pretty interesting. 11 starts at home. He’s 0 and8 with a 7.04 RA on the road. In eight starts, he’s 2-2 with a 3.04. The one-two pitch outside 2 and2. So, you can understand the frustration. There has to be something to that. Luis Severino has been a guy that’s that’s been very good over the course of his career. Signed the big contract with the Athletics and here he is at a trip AAA ballpark. And on the 2- two pitch, Lucas chops one out toward the left side of the infield and it’s going to be a base hit for Lucas as he streamed down the line and was able to beat out the throw from Miguel Anduhar and he’s safe at first and the Jays get the leadoff man on. I mean, you have to give credit to Nathan Lucas there sprinting down that first baseline. That ball hit the hard dirt just around the home plate area. Bounced very high in the air. You can see Nathan Lucas running hard. Beats it by about a half a step. The A’s were thinking about taking a look. Looks like Nathan Lucas is safe over there at first base. I’ll ask you a question about that play in a second as George Springer steps in, takes the first pitch in for a strike. Springer the DH tonight batting 280. Would Andar Anderoh, excuse me, have had a better chance if he bare-handed that instead of trying to go glove transfer. Absolutely. And I think he should have. He just might have not gotten a good grip on that baseball. Springer rips one to short. But a beautiful play out there at short by Muny as he makes the backhand grab an underhand toss to second over to first for the double play. And just like that, there’s two away. That was a pretty good swing from George Springer. A good fast ball down and in from Luis Severino. He hammered that thing up the middle. Like you said, Max Muny to Zack Gellof. Pretty good turn up the middle. The Springer got a pretty good hold of that one, but a beautiful defensive play there by Muny now brings up Guerrero with two out here in the top of the first. And that first pitch from Severino, a fast ball at 97, just missing that elbow or bicep of Guerrero. The one pitch fouled off by Vlatty. Now one and one. Pretty good fast balls and he missed his spot both times. You could see that the catcher Shay Langelier set up outside. Both of those fast balls were inside. That one was on the black. The first one, like you said, right past the elbow guard. The 1-1 pitch missing inside the sinker at 96. It’s two and one. Glatty batting 276. Here comes the 2-1 high outside. Three in one. Severino stepping off the rubber for a moment now. Reaches down to that rosin bag. Get set to deliver here on the 3-1 pitch with Pette on deck outside and a free pass for Vlatty. Gays will try and get something going again with two away. That’s a good take from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. especially in this ballpark when it gets hot in Sacramento, the ball tends to fly quite a bit. So, as a hitter in a 3-1 count, a fast ball count, you you’d imagine that that he would get antsy there, maybe get out on that front foot, but he took that pretty easily just off the plate. Again, this brings up Bo Bashette with two away. Platty on first and the first pitch comes in, a cutter outside 1. Bette 12 home runs on the season. 52 runs batted in in 90 games. The 1. It’s high a little bit outside. 200. Severino’s throwing 14 pitches already in this top half of the inning. We just got underway about 6 minutes ago. Top of the first inning, no score. Bette with the two- count. Swings at that one. Fouls it up and over the dugout on the first base side. It’s two and one. Athletics wearing the white pants tonight with the green tops trimmed with of course that gold and white. The Blue Jays, gray pants, the royal blue jerseys. The first of three. They’ll play at the same time tomorrow night. And then 4:00 Eastern on Sunday, the 2-1 pitch. Bette takes it and it’s in for a strike. The sinker evens the count at two and two. Severo gets the sign, turns and fires on the two- two pitch. And that one looked like it might have been a bit outside, but right on that edge, Bette gets caught looking, strikes out to end the inning. And we head to the bottom of the first with no score. Blue Jays up three to2 on a wacky play to give Toronto the lead on Sportset 590 the band and the Sportset radio network. Welcome back. Getting set to start the bottom half of the inning. No score as the Jays had a couple on but unable to cash anybody in in that first inning and first pitch swinging is Lawrence Butler and he sends one on a pretty decent ride to center field but plenty of room for Miles Straw to make the grab one away. Lawrence Butler hit that baseball pretty hard but I can guarantee that Max Scherzer will take that one pitch, one out. First inning is brought to you by Armstrong Bird Food. Armstrong Bird Food, the reason birds fly north, feeding Blue Jays since 1986. Visit Armstrong herdfood.com. That brings up the number two hitter, Brent Rooker. The DH, the right-handed bat, facing the righty Sherzer. One pitch, one out for the Blue Jays here in the bottom of the first inning. Sherzer fires to Rooker and it’s straight down Main Street. Fast at 93. It’s an 01 count. Max Sherzer is averaging about 93.3 with that four seam fast ball. Been pretty electric. We’ve seen it up to 95 in recent starts. And he comes back with another fast ball clock just below 94. Rooker got a piece of that one, but he’s down in the count 0 and2. The full mix from Max Scherer’s four seam fast, which he throws 48% of the time. Cutter, curveball, change up, and slider. We’ll keep an eye on Alejandro Kirk as that one that was fouled off by Rooker might have caught a part of Kirk’s right bicep as Rooker just went down swinging as he misses on a nasty looking cutter from Sherzer. Strike out for Max. Two away. That’s a really good sequence for Max Scherzer and Alejandro Kirk. Two four seam fast balls really well located at at about 94 miles an hour and like you said mixes in that cutter. Looks like a strike on the outer third of the plate, then kind of takes a left turn away from that barrel. Nick Curts now comes up for the Athletics and the first pitch in for a strike to Curts. Fastball at 93. Curts this year 15 home runs. Left-handed bat of Curts on the 01 pitch. swings and fouls went off down the third base side and quickly down in the count 02. Eric Smith and Chris Laroo with you in the Timber Mart broadcast booth. We are in the first inning. No score, J’s and A’s. Herz trying to keep this inning alive for the Athletics. Two out, 02 count. Jerzer with the pitch and came back with the curveball at 76 low inside. It’s one and two. Kurts is a 6’5, 240lb rookie. He’s just 22 years old out of Lancaster, PA. He was the fourth overall pick in 2024 by the A’s. Having a pretty good rookie season. Most home runs in M or excuse me, most RBI’s in Major League Baseball basically the last month. If we go back to June 15th now, even the count at two and two as Max misses with the cutter, has thrown only eight pitches and he’s trying to sit down Curts right here. A two- two pitch. Had to go high. Curts wouldn’t chase and it’s now three and two. Yeah, they tried to go to the top of that strike zone. Maybe a hair above that fast ball was well above the strike zone. An easy take for Kurts. the 3-2 pitch and a kind of an excuse me swing from Kurts. It dribbles down the third base side, stays fair. Sherzer comes off the mound to pick it up, but no play at first and it’s going to be a two out infield hit on a dribbler from Kurts. It was a really nice change up right down the middle. Good arm speed, good action to that change up. Curts hit it off the very end of the bat. Will Wagner, the third baseman, was actually playing well off the line, so he couldn’t come in and charge that baseball. Curts gets gets to first base without a throw. That’s tough luck for Max Scherzer. Curts with a big smile on his face as he’s halfway down the line knowing he got away with one. He turns and shares a laugh and a smile with a lot of his teammates in that athletics dugout. He’s a big dude. He’s way bigger than Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at first base there. You said 6’5, 240. I know for me that’s kind of like looking in the mirror, but well the 240 part. Big swing and a miss on a cut for Shay Langalers. Couldn’t catch up with that cutter from Sherzer. Down in the count now 01. 12 home runs on the season for Langalers. The athletics catcher trying to keep this inning alive with Curts out at first. Max turns fires on the 01. That one slap foul down the first base side. It’s quickly 02. Well, unless he drenched himself with water, we know how hot it is in Sacramento cuz Langaliers, his bright green jersey is a dark emerald green and it’s not even the end of the first inning. He is sweating through that jersey already. I think my colleague here to my left is looking at the weather app right now to try and get the exact temperature in Sacramento. Well, I have my phone in Fahrenheit, so that’s not going to help anybody. Well, we can we we trust the Canadian listeners to be able to do the conversion. The 02 pitch and Kurts takes off. The throw down to second is not in time and Curts slides in safely with a stolen base and Langlier still alive on the one and two count. Well, Kurt stole that baseball or that bag, sorry, on Max Scherzer. He got a really good jump at first base. Max Scherzer with the big leg lift. Alejandro Kirk really had no chance to get Curts at second base. The first stolen base of his career for Nick Curts. He should pick that bag up like Ricky Henderson. Going two and Langalers gets underneath it. Sends one on a decent ride to right field, but lots of room underneath it. Camping to make the grab is Addison Barger. And that will retire the A’s. We get set to start the second inning, the top half, and leading things off for the Blue Jay Blue Jays, Addison Barger. And he gets underneath one on the first pitch and fouls it toward first base and interestingly off the mound to make the play right near first base was the pitcher Severino who called off Curts to make the snag and quickly went away. Well, that was a pretty good cutter up and in. Addison Barger got it right off the hands. Like you said, Luis Severino caught that baseball. Nick Curts was kind of just looking at him, which is something that rarely happens. You really never want a pitcher to catch a fly ball like that. Nick Curts was just looking at Seberino. Now, of course, the play was made, so they’re both smiling at each other, but you never want to let the the pitcher catch a popup like that. Brings up Alejandro Kirk, the number six hitter in the Blue Jay lineup, batting 306 entering action tonight. Ahead in the count, 10 now. Quickly 200 as Severino misses up high with a fast ball at 97. No score. Top of the second. First of three between the Jays and A. Severino with the pitch. Little bit outside and Kirk went after it. Fouled it off down the first base side. Still ahead in the count. It’s two and one. When we do the out of town scoreboard tonight, are we going to give some uh NBA summer league scores? The 2-1 pitch to Alejandro Kirk is in for a strike. The sinker. It’s two and two. Well, you’re my boss for the next three games, so you can do whatever you want. I I think you’re my boss. This is I I’m just I’m just a guest. Hey, you’ve been doing this for 25 years. The two- two pitch to Kirk and he rips one into center field. No play at short for Muny scooping it up as Denzel Clark out in center field and it’s a one out base hit for Alejandro Kirk. How about Alejandro Kirk again coming up with the base hit with two strikes. Just so impressive the approach with two strikes, sitting back, shortening up that swing and hammering that cutter at the top of the strike zone up the middle. Brings up Will Wagner, the Blue Jay third baseman tonight, batting from the left side. First pitch from Severino up high. Missed with that fast ball and it’s 10. Wagner in 28 games batting 210. Does have a couple of RBI’s. Perk at first with one out for the Blue Jays here in the top of the second. And Wagner rips one into right field. Is going to drop in for a line drive base hit. And the Jays going to try and start cooking here with two on. First and second, one away. Well, Will Wagner’s obviously seeing the baseball well right now. He was two for four in his last game. He got that change up kind of over the middle of the plate, stayed right on it, and hit a pretty good line drive to right field. Alejandro Kirk moves up to second base. Blue Jays have runners at first and second now with just one out in this inning. And this will bring up Ernie Clement batting 292. Blue Jays second baseman getting his first look at Severino. Kirk at second, Wagner at first. And the first pitch from Severino, another high fast ball. It’s a one count. Clement four home runs this year. 24 runs batted in the 10 down Main Street. It’s one and one. We didn’t have time to do the umpires before the game, but I’ll do it. Home plate umpire is Junior Valentine. First pace first base umpire is Brian Walsh. At second base is Trip Gibson and third base Ryan Blakey. So there you go. I was hoping for some bacon. The one-1 pitch in for a strike. Got him with the sinker. caught that inside edge. It’s now one and two. Tino has thrown 28 pitches thus far. Trying to get the A’s out of a little jam right now. The Jays have first and second with one away. Now two away as Clement is caught looking. And it’s a similar pitch to the one that got Bette in the first as it catches that outside edge. Clement didn’t like the call, but it did look like a strike, Chris. Yeah, we rarely see him react like that. He’s got a couple of words for homeplayed umpire Junior Valentine. But that’s a good pitch. 98 mph. You can see it come back just a little bit and clip the black on the outside part. That’s a really good four seamer with a little bit of life through that zone. Miles Straw now the number nine hitter and he takes the first pitch up high. Fastball clocked at 99. Straw batting 247, a home run. 15 runs batted in in 75 games this season. The one pitch, big cut on that one, swinging a miss. It’s one and one. Those numbers for Luis Severino might not be great this season, but that fast ball is still electric. Those last two fast balls were 98 and 99 mph. It’s been a heavy diet of fast balls so far tonight. Two on, two out for the Blue Jays. Straw looks at the next pitch. 98 again down Main Street. One and two. Severino takes a step off the rubber for a moment. Deep breath looks in at the side. Quick look at second at Kirk. Turns, fires on the one-two pitch, swinging a miss and Straw sits down and the A’s get out of that jam. The Blue Jays strand two and we go to the bottom of the second with no score. I may just call the game this way. This is Toronto Blue Jays baseball. Makes the catch and the Blue Jays win the series on Sports Net 590. The band and the Sports Net Radio Network. Getting set for the bottom of the second inning. No score between the Jay’s and A’s as Max Scherzer back out there to work in this second inning. Looked pretty solid in the first and he’ll now deal with the left-handed bat of the A’s left fielder Tyler Sodestrom. And the first pitch inside to Sodestrom. Fast ball at 92. No good. 10 counts. 16 home runs. 53 runs batted in in 94 games for Sodestrom. The 10, he sends this one into left field. Tracking back on the track to make the grab is Nathan Lucas. One away. Well, Nathan Lucas has been really good in both right field and left field. Makes that play pretty easily up against that wall. Been pretty impressive to watch him not only with the bat, but in the outfield as well in those corners. Sherzer with a big fist bump after or fist pump excuse me I should say after that catch from Lucas appreciating the defense from his left fielder and now with one out first pitch swinging Miguel Anduhar sends one sky high out towards second base camping underneath it to make the grab is Ernie Clement and just like that two away. I think the reason for that fist pump is is this park is is very hitter friendly. So anything up in the air, anything out to the outfield, you really never know as a pitcher. So you a guy, you know, gets the barrel to one, hits one to the warning track and you probably as the pitcher assuming that it’s getting out of here and if that guy if that outfielder outfielder comes down with that baseball, you’re pretty excited and you give a fist bump just like Max Scherer did. Number seven hitter in the A’s lineup is Max Muny. First pitch swinging. Muny fouls that one off down on the count 01. Muny batting 218 coming into action tonight with eight home runs, 22 runs batted in in 52 games. The short stop looks out at Sherzer who comes and fires the leg kick and the delivery on the 01. It’s down in the dirt outside missing with the cutter. It’s one and one. the 1-1 pitch. Sher tried to come inside too far. Fast ball at 94. It’s two and one. Of course, Maxy is not that Max Muny of the Los Angeles Dodgers. He’s the Maxy of Camaro, California. He was a first round pick, 25th overall in 2021. and he just took a big cut, swinging a miss on a change up. Now two and two. Made his debut on March 27th of this year. Went to a high school in Thousand Oaks, California. They’ll try and keep this inning alive right here. Two and two. Two out the pitch and it’s fouled off for the back stop. We’ll do it again at two and two. Max Sherzer’s looked pretty good. He’s looked he’s looked great in his last few starts. Obviously, he’s had some tough luck giving up couple of earned runs that probably shouldn’t have crossed home plate, but the stuff has looked good. The the demeanor out there has looked good. Most importantly, he’s healthy. The two- two pitch and my gets underneath this one, sends it fouled down the right field side. We’ll do it again at two and two. And the fast velocity has been good, too. That last fast ball, the four seam fast ball was 95. Almost snuck it by Maxy. Jerzer gets the sign from Kirk. Stairs down. Leg kick delivery. And this one is fouled up and over the back stop as Muny got a piece of that curveball to stay alive and will do it again. On the out of town scoreboard brought to you by the St. Louis Bar and Grill. Crown Canada’s number one rust protection. The fast ball clocked at 95 outside. It’s a 10-0 count to Nathan Lucas who fouls off the second pitch. It’s now 1 and one as we are back to the top of the order for the Blue Jays to start this third inning. I wonder what Nathan Lucas’ pass list looks like right now. Obviously, he was born in Sacramento, went to Sacramento State, and here he is playing in the big leagues in Sacramento. Well, there are good sections available, so I I’m sure he didn’t have a hard time getting tickets for this one. Not exactly uh the most robust crowd in Sacramento for this ball game. We’ll just leave it at that. Lucas down in the count, one and two. And he tries to jump on that one-two pitch. Sends it on a decent ride out to center field, but there to make the grab. The local kid, the Toronto kid, Denzel Clark, makes the snag one away. Denzel Clark’s been pretty good lately. We’ve seen him all over the highlights, making tons of nice plays out in center field. also starting to swing the bat just a little bit better. Is getting pretty comfortable in the big leagues. Brings up George Springer for his second at bat of the ball game. He grounded out into a double play back in the first inning. We’ll see what George can do right here. The pitch from Severino up high blocked at 9810. Severino looks in at the sign from Langaliers. Fires on the 10 pitch. Fouled off by Springer up and over the back stop. It’s one and one. Seems like the Blue Jays are just a little bit behind that fast ball. Luis Severino tends to lead with his sweeper, but hasn’t really led with that sweeper, at least tonight. He’s thrown a lot of foreseen fast balls in the upper 90s. Maybe that’s throwing the Jays off a little bit. Swinging a miss on a fast ball that was a little bit outside but clocked at 99. Springer couldn’t catch up with it. He’s now down in the count. One and two. And even in this at bat, George Springer has just looked uncomfortable on that fast ball. Maybe expecting that sweeper or something different than that fast ball. He got something different there, but he held off the slider way outside down low. It’s two and two. By the way, I was going to text you cuz I right after right now. Well, I could have. I mean, Tennessee see now, now you killed my story. The pitch is coming. Now it’s two and two. Springer better stay alive here. I want to tell my story. The two- two pitch bs it up and over the back stop. Stays live. We’ll do it again. I was going to text you cuz right after my last series, I remember in that last game I said to you, man, I’ve been watching Springer in the cage and he has been cranking baseballs. And I’m telling you, he’s going to knock one out today. He is crushing baseballs. And I think we even had a little off mic like friendly wager that he’d hit one. Now he didn’t that day. He’s been hammering everything since. Sends one out to short. Backhanded stab by Muny at short. Makes a beautiful play across the infield to throw at Springer by a step. There’s two away. I think you do. I I do remember you saying something to that effect. Like, man, he’s really swinging the bat in the cage well. And I looked at you like, everybody swings the bat in the cage. Something different about him. And then he came alive. See, this is my scouting report for you. Yeah, maybe we’ll call Ross. You can get a job in scouting. Got some time to kill. Don’t send me to Sacramento. Brings up Vlatty with two out and the first pitch to Guerrero. Cutter up high. 10 count. Guerrero walked in his first at bat. And he’s ahead in the count now. Two as Severino missed another one up high with a fast ball just below 99. I wouldn’t mind if Vlad gets big here. Haven’t seen him really get big in a while. You’re in a pretty good count. A guy that’s throwing a lot of fast balls. Why not? See what he does right here on the 20 count. Deino kicks and fires. Vlatty looks at that one. That would have been one to jump on. Ah, that was I I think that was a good take. That was a fast ball on the outer part of the plate. Probably not much you could do with that pitch. So, I like that take there. Comes the 2-1 and Vlatty gets up underneath it and sends it sky high up and over the back stop the press box. It’s two and two. How many people do you think are at this game? I’d say uh 10,000. I think less. 5,000 for Nathan Lucas. the two two- two pitch and Guerrero looks at it down Main Street for the bottom part of the zone, but it was in there, folks. It was a strike and Vlatty goes down looking. Another strike out. Let’s see if we can figure out the following baseball slang term. Today’s phrase is oppo taco. Do you know what it means? Oppo taco. A home run hit to the opposite field. with an oppo taco. His 13th and it’s a one-run game. Expand your vocabulary by listening to every game on the MLB app and MLB.com. Zack Gellof the number eight hitter is in for a strike 01. Timberart docsier is where you go and win the game with Canada’s building center. Comes the 01 pitch and this one fouled off by Gellof 02. Want to go back to the attendance thing for a second. I admit folks, I apologize. I was wrong. I was thinking that maybe Sutter Health Park seated about 18,000. It seats 10,600 with about another 3500 on the BMS on those those grassy things out in the outfield. So about 14,000 is capacity. So my guess of 10 was way off cuz it’s maybe maybe half full. And Eric Eric admitted to me in the break that he’d never heard of the word burn. Burn. No idea. To me that’s it’s a it’s a baseball thing. A grassy hill. Yeah, there you go. The one-two pitch. Swinging a miss. Another strike out for Sherzer as Gellof sits down. One away. That’s a pretty good fast ball. A lot of life on that pitch. 94 m anph. Probably not where you want that pitch. That was a very hitable pitch. They wanted it elevated above that strike zone, but had enough life on it. Had enough VO to get it past him. So, Max with three strikeouts tonight. He’s thrown only 29 pitches thus far. The number nine hitter is Denzel Clark. And the kid from Toronto looks at the first pitch down in the dirt. Ball one. Slider no good for Sherzer. No score in this bottom of the third. That one in for a strike on the cutter from Sherzer. It’s one and one. Clark batting 214 entering action tonight. takes a deep breath and now comes set leg kick delivery. Fires it a fast ball at 94 down Main Street. Big cut from Clark. It’s one and two. Denzel Clark’s been pretty good over the last week or so. He’s seven for his last 20. A home run, a couple of RBI’s. Strikeout rate is still pretty high though. Eight strikeouts in those 20 at bats. Sherzer with the pitch on the one-two. A nice frame job there from Kirk, but he didn’t get the call. And that’s correct. It was a ball as Sherzer missed with the change up. Nice patience from Clark. It’s two and two. The 2-2 delivery outside. Missing with that change up. It’s now three and two. Clark digs in trying to get on base here with one away for the A’s. Bottom of the third, no score. The 3-2 pitch. Swinging miss. He sits down. Backto back strikeouts for Sherzer. Two away. That’s a great pitch. He pulled off kind of yanked that last change up off the plate outside and then he came back with that really good cutter. looked like a strike and then broke down right to the bottom of that strike zone. And when a guy swings and misses as much as Denzel Clark, you don’t want to give him anything that’s hitable when you get two strikes on him. And Max Sherer didn’t there and ended up striking him out. 35 pitches thrown thus far for Sherzer. In the bottom of the third now with two out to the top of the order we go. First pitch swinging. Lawrence Butler fouls one off. Third base side 01. 13 home runs this season. 39 runs batted in, batting .251. He flew out to center field on the first pitch that he saw back in the bottom of the first. See what he does right here. 01 big whiff on the second pitch. The change up got him. It’s 0 and2. Sherzer only throws that change up about 11% of the time, but he’s thrown a lot of them tonight and pretty good. That last one had a lot of downward action. What have we got here? Pitch count. Pitch clock violation. Seems like it. Lawrence Butler is retired on a pitch clock violation. Strike three. There you go. Introducing baseball’s all new national pregame show, MLB Tonight live at 5. It’s on SportsNet 590 the van and the sportset radio network. Fourth inning, no score. Jays and A’s and first pitch swinging and sending one into right field for the Blue Jays. And on his horse is Bo Bashette as he’s into second, sliding in safely just ahead of the throw. Lawrence Butler got on that one and threw one on a dime to second base and Bette just got in there with a leadoff double in the fourth inning. Well, Nick Curts was playing off the line at first base and Bo Bashette just took that cutter on the outside part of the plate and ripped it around that first base bag. Like you said, Lawrence Butler did a great job getting to that baseball in the corner in deep right field. Actually cut it off before it got to the wall. Made a perfect throw into second base. Almost got Bo Bashette. But we’ll see what the Blue Jays can do with Bette in scoring position. The leadoff double. The best chance for the Blue Jays thus far in this game to get on the board. Addison Barger ahead in the count 1 and swings at the second pitch. Fouls it straight back. It’s one and one. It’s a pretty good swing on that fast ball. Was a fast ball about thigh high right down the middle. Barger just missed it. Fouling that ball right back into the screen. Barger in his first at bat with a pop out to the infield officially to the pitcher. Severino took that one and now he tries to come high inside to Barger again who fouls it off. It’s one and two. Well, in his last at bat, he got him on that cutter up and in and hit a little weak popup. That was the same pitch right there again. Barger kind of tied up. Wasn’t able to do anything with that pitch, but foul it back. One and two. Came inside again. Barger dances out of the way. It’s two and two. Fourth inning is presented by Bet 365. Download the Bet365 app for today’s baseball odds and find out why it’s never ordinary at Bet 365 19 plus. Play responsibly. Ontario only. Barger batting 263. Staring down Severino with the 2-2 count. Betett at second. Up high. It’s 3-2. The Blue Jays are batting .282 this season with runners at scoring position. That’s third in all of Major League Baseball behind the Rays and the Dodgers. There’s nobody out in this inning. I’m assuming that he’ll get Bo Bashette home at some point in this inning. Here comes the 3-2 pitch. Larger swings and misses. Strikes out one away. That’s a great pitch down and in just underneath the bat of Addison Barger. Severino isn’t having a great season and we talked about his last seven, one and six with an 8.03 RA, but he doesn’t look like that guy today. Pretty good. Yeah, he’s given up four hits but no runs. Five strikeouts through three and a third and the first pitch high inside on a heater 96. Herk contorts out of the way of that one. Alejandro one for one in the ball game. Singled in the second inning. We’ll see what he can do right here with Bette in scoring position following that leadoff double ahead in the count. Kirk 10 inside 20. I mean, you look at his stuff and the stuff is is electric right now. You kind of wonder how is this guy over the last last seven games 1 and six with an 8.03 RA. It’s almost unbelievable. Two and 10 on the season. 200 pitch. Gus missing. He wanted that call. And now Kirk ahead 3 0. I guess Syberina will tell you it’s the park, right? Some point you got to get over. Going to be there for a couple of years, brother. Yeah, I don’t feel bad for him. Here comes the three-0 offering inside and four straight to Alejandro Kirk. Gives him the free pass and the Blue Jays now with first and second with just one away. Well, it seemed to me like Luis Severino was barking at Junior Valentine after that last call. None of those pitches in that at bat were relatively close. So, I’m not sure what he’s barking at. I was about to do the St. Louis Bar and Grill, but I think that’s that’s your call, isn’t it? So, I’ll have to hand it over to you. Get to that in a second, folks. As Will Wagner steps in, batting from the left side against the righty Severino. First pitch up high. Ball one. No score. Fourth inning. Jay’s and A’s. Toronto with two on and just one out. Wagner one for one in the ball game. Had a single back in the second and he fouls off the next pitch. One and one. There’s also a new read. I don’t know if he noticed that. Didn’t. You’d have gotten tripped up on it. Probably. That’s why you’re the pro. You’re the St. Louis Bar and Grill guy. I hope they’ve had you out at least once. No. Zero times. Hey, St. Louis Bar and Grill. Come on. the 1-1 inside. Wagner twists his body out of the way of that one. It’s two and one. A golden opportunity for the Jays to get at least one here in this third inning, if not more. We’ll see what they can do. 62 pitches thrown for Severino. Here’s 63 right here. And it’s fouled off by Wagner. It’s two and two. That’s a great fast ball from Severino. A ton of life. 99 mph on the inner part of the plate. Obviously feeling good today. Seeino wiping a lot of that sweat on his left arm. Reaching down for the rosin bag a couple of times. The heat, humidity a major factor in Sacramento. Deino trying to battle through it right here with two on, one out, and a two- two count. And Wagner stays alive. Fouls that one off. We got a a shot from the dugout of the Blue Jays in one of the corners of the dugout toward the right side with a ton of jerseys hanging up. We’ll explain that in a second. On the two- two pitch, Wagner again fouls it off, stays alive. Do it again at two and two. Again, because of the heat, the guys sweating through jerseys. They have backups ready to go at a moment’s notice. The 2-2 inside just missing. Severino wanted that one, didn’t get the call. It was inside. It’s three and two. Well, the interesting thing about that is normally all those things would be in the clubhouse right behind the dugout, but the the clubhouse is in left field. So, you have to bring all those things into the dugout so they’re ready for guys. 3-2 pitch and Wagner sends it fouled down the third base side, maybe out into left field a little bit. We’ll do it again at three and two. And you could actually see Max Scherzer sitting in front of a fan in kind of a little airond conditioned area of that dugout. Again, normally he would go into the clubhouse behind the dugout and air condition in an air conditioned room, but the Blue Jays don’t have that in this park. The 3-2 and that one came inside and hit Wagner. They got him on that left forearm and I think the Athletics are saying that he swung. On the replay, it didn’t look like he swung, but that’s a tough place to get hit. You have to hope that he’s okay. It was the sweeper. I believe that might be the first maybe second time we’ve seen Severino come with the sweeper and it caught that left arm. I’ve said this before, but as a as a pitcher, if the batter brings his forearm, we saw actually um who did it recently? I forget. I think you and I were doing the game cuz I feel we had this conversation. If a hitter brings, by the way, we just saw another replay of that Will Wagner swing. It was really close. He didn’t swing, but it was closer than I thought. But if the hitter brings the elbow down and the forearm comes forward and ends up getting hit by that baseball, I don’t think that’s the pitcher’s fault. That’s the hitter’s fault because he brought that forearm into the baseball. Fair point. And I can’t be the only one that thinks that. Well, just don’t mention it to anybody right now like Junior Valentine. Wagner gets the free pass and it’s now bases loaded for Ernie Clement with just one away. And Seabberino comes inside on Clement who dances out of the box 10 with Wagner getting hit. That was the 11th time this year that Severino has hit a batter which is tied for the most hit batters in Major League Baseball. Clement jumps on one, sends it on a decent ride to center field on the track to make the grab is Denzel Clark, but tagging and scoring is Bo Bashette and the Blue Jays take a one- nothing lead. Well, Ernie Clement was all over that baseball, just missing a grand slam, maybe four or five feet from that center field wall. Denzel Clark catching it pretty easily and getting that ball back in quickly. Blue Jays have runners at first and third now in a one- nothing lead with two outs in this inning. So Toronto strikes first. And how about Alejandro Kirk getting on his horse, tagging at second and getting over to third. Well, that’s how deep that baseball was. Love it. Miles Straw, the number nine hitter for the Jays, trying to keep this inning alive. Runners on the corners and the pitch from Severino inside with a fast ball. All 10. Straw in his first at bat. Struck out back in the second inning. Zino fires. Big cut. Swinging a miss on the fast ball. It’s one and one. Seems like Miles Straw is really struggling with that fast ball. Struck out in his first at bat. Was way behind that for four seam fast ball from Severino. the 1-1. Another one swinging a miss from Straw. Down one and two. Almost like he’s expecting something different than that fast ball and just getting fooled by it. And he was a late addition to this game tonight, folks. Goey Loperito was supposed to start tonight, but he was scratched late due to illness and Straw was inserted. And Miles Straw just struck out for the second time in this game. And that will in end excuse me the inning. But the Jays do score one and strike first leading the A’s one. Let’s see if we can figure out the following baseball slang term. Today’s phrase is oppo taco. Do you know what it means? Oppo taco. A home run hit to the opposite field with an oppo taco. his 13th and it’s a one-run game. This is Toronto Blue Jays baseball swinging a miss strike three middle fast but he puts it by cruise two now on sportset five time he’s a band and the sportset radio network bottom of the fourth inning the blue jays leading the A’s one- nothing as Toronto just got one in in the top half of the inning and they bring Max Scherzer back out and he has pitched very well thus far tonight he’s been cruising first batter is Brent Rooker and the first pitch cutter outside down low in the dirt from Sherzer 10. We’re going to get to that out of town scoreboard in a couple of moments from the St. Louis Bar and Grill as Boston did win tonight. Eight straight now for the Red Sox, the hottest team in baseball. Swinging a miss from Rooker on the change up. It’s one and one. One-1 pitch outside as Sherer misses with the fast ball. It’s two and one. Only 40 pitches thrown thus far for Sherzer. We’re here in the fourth inning. He’s been good. The stuff is has looked very sharp. Might be his most economical start of the season so far. The two-1 pitch fouled off by Rooker. It’s now two and two. In his last start, he threw 72 pitches. Came out of the ball game early probably just as a precaution. On June 30th, he threw 71 pitches. So, he’s got about 30 pitches to go. I would imagine he’d go 85, maybe 90 pitches in this start. Swinging a miss. Rooker sits down for the second time in this game. A sixth strikeout for Sherzer to start this fourth inning. Let’s take another look at that out of town scoreboard which is brought to you by St. Louis Bar and Grill. 100% Canadian-owned and operated since 1992. Home of the $4 Happy Hour. 20 plus food and drink items starting at just $4. Visit staint louisings.com for details. You are welcome. Hold on a second. $4 drinks. You did say food and drinks. $4 drinks. 20 plus. St. Louis. They need to hire you for something. Oh. All right, have to put that at the top of the list. Hurt spritz one down the right field line. Well foul off the B in right field. We call that a hill, a souvenir for your local kid. And Curts will dig back in. One and one as he took a ball on the first pitch. The curveball from Sherer was no good. He ripped that second one. Fouled though, and now one and one missing up high. Sherzer the cutter no good. It’s two-1. Did we even give any scores or I just talk about the cost of the drinks at $4. Seattle beats Detroit 123. Boston again their eighth straight win beating Tampa 5-4. Minnesota defeating Pittsburgh 2-1. Speaking of 2-1, the 2-1 pitch to Kurts is up high. It’s now 3-1. Ongoing right now, the Dodgers leading the Giants 2-1. Top of the fourth inning. Sherzer with a 3-1 pitch coming to Curts. And that one misses. And it’s the first free pass of the night issued by Max Scherzer. Well, you can see the respect that Max Scherzer has for Curts. Obviously a rookie with a ton of power. Throws that 3-1 curveball in there. Just missing on the outside part of the plate. But we don’t see that all that often from Max Scherzer. Normally he’s pounding that strike zone with the fast ball. Brings up Shay Langalers and the first pitch to Langalers outside from Sherzer. Missed with the fast ball 10. Langalers flew it to right field in his first at bat. He’s got Curts at first with one out here in the fourth inning. Blue Jays leading one- nothing. Swinging a miss. Nice looking fast ball from Max right there. It’s one and one adding 233. Langalers does have some pop. 12 home runs on the season. The 1-1 pitch coming from Sherzer. And this one is sent into left field toward the track. Heels just before the track making the grab. Nathan Lucas who whips it back into the infield to second base to Clement. And there are two away. I think Max Sherzer got lucky with that one. It was a curveball at the bottom of the strike zone. Shay Langalers was all over it. Just got underneath it a little bit. Hammered that thing out to Nathan Lucas in left field just in front of that warning track. We’re in the Timbermark broadcast booth in the bottom of the fourth inning with the Blue Jays leading one- nothing. A’s have a man at first with two down and Sodestrom fouls off the first pitch. Tyler Sodestrom, the left fielder, batting from the left side against the righty Max Scherzer. 16 home runs on the season. You know, the record might not be great overall for the A’s, but they’ve got some pop in their lineup. They do, and they’ve got a lot of good young players as well. I think the future is probably pretty bright for these guys. The 01 pitch and this one ripped into center field and it’s going to drop in for a base hit and Oakland or excuse me. I knew I was going to do it at least once. Athletics. At least once. And look it on my sheet. What do I got? Athletics on this sheet. Athletics. But I knew I would say that dreaded O word once. The Athletics are trying to get something going with two away here in the fourth. Well, it wasn’t a bad pitch from Max Scherzer. It was a cutter in off the plate. Tyler Sodestrom got jammed right there and just dumped it out in front of Nathan Lucas in center field. Sorry, Miles Straw in center field. Little fivegame hit streak now for Sodestrom as he reaches safely for the first time in this game. That was just the second hit of the game for the athletics. By the way, have you looked at any of the uh artist renderings and whatnot and the pictures that are online for what the stadium’s going to look like in Vegas? It looks pretty sweet. I’m not sold until there’s a a shovel in the ground. I can get that. My wife says in the winter when I’m out doing all the shoveling. Two on two as Miguel Andhar comes up. I think there’s been artist renderings of a new Tropicana field as well. I haven’t seen that one. Although I will You know what? Never mind. I’m going to bite my tongue. I don’t want to get in any trouble. Going to leave it alone. Going to leave it alone, folks. Bottom of the fourth, two out. Blue Jays leading one- nothing. Two on for the Athletics. It’s an 01 count to Andhar. Now one and one. By the way, I mentioned my wife, which makes me think of family, which makes me think. Shout out to my dad, Alf Smith. Happy birthday to my dad. His birthday today. And a shout out to my nephew who who uh turned 25 yesterday. Wow. Austin Smith. So, shout out to him as well. Birthdays across the Smith board. The 1-1 pitch and got underneath it. sends it out in toward left center over to make the grab. Straw calls off Lucas to make the grab and sit down the Athletics. We go to the fifth inning. Get insurance that’s really big on care at dejardan.com/care today. Blue Jays leading one- nothing as we get set to start this fifth inning. Hey, by the way, I gave shout outs just a couple moments ago to my dad and my nephew. How about a shout out to Blake Murphy? He threw out the first pitch today at the Intercount Maple Leafs game. It’s like big time. He’s He’s big time Charlie throwing out that first pitch. Actually, now that I say that, too, I saw something come across the uh Twitterx feed today. I’m going to look up the young man’s name, but there was a no hitter thrown in Hamilton last night in the inner county league. A nine in no hitter for uh Hamilton. I think it was an 18- nothing win in a no hitter. I think Blake Murphy threw that, didn’t he? Blake would not be throwing a no hitter. Quickly down in the count is Nathan Lucas. 02 and he stays alive. Fouls off another one down the left field side. He’s fouled off three straight pitches to start this at bat here in the top half of the fifth inning. Luis Severino is now at 77 pitches in this ball game. Sure. The Blue Jays want to get him out of here. He’s he’s pitched pretty well up until now. Giving up just one earned run here in the top of the fifth. Y2 pitch in there for a strike. The sweeper. A pretty one right there from Severino. sits down. Nathan Lucas one away. Yeah, that was a pretty good one. A back door sweeper from Luis Severino. Started that off the plate and then just brought it back out to the outer third. Shay Langalers, the catcher, doing a good job framing that pitch, making it look like a strike. Gord Springer 0 for two in the ball game. First pitch in for a strike to Springier 01. The young man’s name in Hamilton, Owen Boone, threw a no hitter for the Hamilton Cardinals yesterday in a dominating 18- nothing victory. Six strikeouts, three walks as Springer sends one out to second and quickly trying to get over to first to cover the bag with Severino. The throw no good at second base as Gellof tried to get it to Severino on the run. But luckily for Oaker for the Athletics, Langaliers had came down the line and was backing up first and made a nice defensive play to keep Springer at first. Well, Springer actually made a move like he wanted to go to second base. And as soon as you do that, you have to get back to first base. George Springer made that move, quickly looked back and saw that Shay Langalers was right there. He put the brakes on and quickly got back to first base. The first error of the season for Gellof at second base. And now first pitch swinging. Vlatty sends one into right center. It drops in for a base hit and Springer gets on his horse and makes the turn and goes first to third. And the Blue Jays now with runners on the corners and Vlatty wants that baseball as that base hit for Guerrero is the 1,000th hit of Guerrero’s career. I thought he was joking around at first. I actually forgot that that was the 1,000th hit of his career. What a great moment for him. Actually pretty well struck baseball, too. Into right field. He’s got a big smile on his face. Blue Jays have runners at first and third. So, back-to-back innings now. The Blue Jays will try to get things cooking. They were able to cash in one last inning after Bashette started things off with a leadoff double. He came in eventually to score the only run of this ball game. That’s where we stand right now, one- nothing. But the Blue Jays threatening yet again. runners on the corners with just one away here in this fifth inning. And I would imagine that the that the Athletics are probably going to start to get that bullpen going here in a little bit. 81 pitches now for Luis Severino here in the fifth. The man I just mentioned, Bo Bashette, steps up to the plate and the first pitch down Main Street. The sinker good for a strike at 96. It’s 0 and one on the out of town scoreboard brought to you by the St. Louis Bar and Grill. Cleveland beats Chicago, the White Sox that is 4-2. The Chicago Cubs losing to the Yankees 11 nothing. Big cut, swinging miss from Bashette. He’s down 02. Boston’s on a roll. Yankees are on a roll. Braves aren’t on a roll. Nope. Got to keep winning if you’re the Blue Jays. And certainly an opportunity to do just that as they roll into the All-Star break with these three against the Athletics. Bette down 02. Swings and fouls that one off. Stays alive at 0 and2. San Diego leading Philadelphia 3-2 top seven. Also in top of the seventh, the Mets and the Royals tied 1-1. It’s a tie game 4-4 in the top of the fifth with Arizona and the Angels. The 02 to Bashette outside down in the dirt. Nice snag there by Langaliers. He whips it down to first trying to catch Vlatty who dives back into the bag safely. Some of the Bluebirds come out in Sacramento. They thought they might have had Guerrero. Well, Vladen made a perfect slide to the back of that baseball. Sorry, that bag. Curts couldn’t get to him. Perfect slide on that replay. Remember, Springer is at third. Guerrero at first. Bette fouls one off down the first base side. He stays alive at one and two. Another tough fast ball from Luis Severino. Up and in on the hands at 99 miles an hour. The only thing Bo could do there is just foul it back. I mean, 86 pitches into this outing, he’s still throwing 99 miles an hour. The one two bet got a piece again. Stays alive. Bo one for two tonight. Looking to cash in at least Springer maybe more. George at third. Guerrero at first. One out. Top of the fifth. Blue Jays leading one- nothing. Toronto with five hits tonight. Bette would love to get a sixth right here. And he won’t do so as he whiffs at that one. Chase the sweeper. Strikes out two away. That’s a big strike out for Luis Severino, especially with one out in the inning. You have a guy standing at third base. That’s a big run in this ball game. The Blue Jays are only up one to nothing. Good sweeper off the plate outside. Bobette goes fishing. They’re nowhere near that baseball. This brings up Addison Barger. Another big cut from Barger as Severino came inside. It seems like that’s what he’s done to Barger at every at bat thus far. He popped out. He struck out and he’s been dealing with a lot of that inside stuff. Well, I wouldn’t throw that pitch anywhere else. Addison Barger seems to be uncomfortable with that cutter, that sweeper, that fast ball on the inside part. And now Vlatty takes off for second. They throw down to second. Springer goes home and then bobbling it at home plate is Langalers and the Blue Jays end up scoring their second run of the game. So Langalers threw to second trying to get Vlatty Gellof cut off the throw in front of the bag, tried to whip it back home to catch Springer and then bobbled the throw home. Langelers couldn’t come up clean and Springer slides in SL safely, excuse me, for a two nothing Toronto lead. Well, the Blue Jays got lucky there. George Springer should have been out very easily at home plate. Zack Gellof just made a bad throw, skipping that throw into Shay Langalers. Shay Langalers couldn’t come up with it and George Springer slides in safely. That’s a play that has to be made. That throw has to be to the chest at home play. George Springer should have been out by two or three steps. So, two nothing Toronto. And now Barger still has a man in scoring position because Vlatty was in there safely. Guerrero at second. Barger down on the count, one-two. Severino looks out at Vlad, turns, fires, and Barger chops one down the third base side and past the diving on Anduhar at third base. Unfortunately for Vlatt, he’s not able to score as that was kind of weakly hit into left field. Sodestrom got on it quickly to keep Vlatty at third. It’s runners on the corners with two away. Well, there was a big hole on the right side of that infield. Max my shorts stop was shaded up the middle towards second base. This Miguel Andrew was off the line, but not that much. And Addison Barger probably saw that hole, knew that that was there, and he just hit a hard ground ball the other way for a base hit. So, the inning keeps going here for the Blue Jays with a two nothing lead. Top of the fifth, Alejandro Kirk, first pitch fouled off by Kirk. But one Kurt one for one tonight with a single in a walk. The average up to 308. Severino has thrown 93 pitches. The 01 down low outside. It’s one and one. And on that pitch, Barger takes the bag. He’s at second now. Blue Jays was second and third. Two away. Hands for Kirk to cash in a couple right here. Jack Perkins, the righty in the athletics bullpen right now. And the 1-1 pitch outside down low. Kirk managed to not break those wrists. He held on. It’s two and one. See, seemed like the Athletics wanted that call. Can’t tell from where we are, but we haven’t seen a a side view yet. But it looked like Kirk might have broken the plane there. And now Kirk sends one straight up the middle past Seino, past the diving Gellof. And the Jays are going to cash in two. Barger got on his horse, scores from second and Alejandro Kirk with two runs batted in and the Blue Jays have taken a 4 nothing lead. Well, that’s just a good piece of hitting from Alejandro Kirk. He got that fast ball. He got the mistake right down the middle and he ripped it on the ground right back at Luis Severino. Actually got part of his leg. Still had enough steam to get up the middle. The Blue Jays now lead 4 nothing in this ball game. So they got one in the last inning and now three here in the fifth. And that’s going to do it for Luis Severino. And with that, we will go back to baseball control and our host show. Take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager said the following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something. These people cheer. We all did. I mean, it was a great game. Both teams played incredible. It was a great game. That’s Mike Piaza after he hit an eighth inning go-ahead home run in the first New York Mets home game after 911. Hear moments like this and more on the MLB app and MLB.com. Here’s Eric Smith and Chris Laroo. All right, thanks very much, Joe. This pitching change is brought to you by Home Hardware, the official home improvement retailer for the Toronto Blue Jays, locallyowned, genuinely Canadian. Blue Jays will try to keep things cooking right here. Keep this inning alive. Facing now Jack Perkins, the righty for the A’s. Gets ahead in the count against Will Wagner. 02 called strike on the first one. the sweeper in for a strike and Wagner just fouled off a fast ball. Hence the O2 count I just mentioned with Kirk at first. Wagner stays alive as that pitch was down low outside one and two. The four nothing lead for Toronto now here in the top of the fifth inning. The one-two pitch fouled off by Wagner. We’ll do it again. Looney Dog Night presented by Schneider is back on July 22nd. Enjoy some sun, a bun, and a delicious hot dog for only a dollar. How many can you eat? Come find out. Visit bluejays.com/promotions. I got you pegged for about a five hot dog guy. More than that. Yeah. Yeah. Those hot dogs are little. It’s I could probably eat more than five though. I could want to eat more than five. Yeah, why not? Dogs aren’t the healthiest thing in the world. No, the one-two pitch to Wagner. Days off that one. The curveball down in the dirt. They’re going to say it actually hit Wagner and he gets another free pass. I didn’t I didn’t notice that catch him, but he’s going to take a trot down to first for the second straight time. Well, I bet Will Wagner will take that. It’s because he was in a tough count, a one-two count to a pretty tough pitcher, Jack Perkins appearing in just his fourth big league ball game, but he’s got good stuff. So, now two on and two out for the Blue Jays as Ernie Clement will come up. missed a grand slam in his last at bat by about five feet, but did cash in the Blue Jays first run of the game on a sacked fly to center field. Lament batting 291. He’s got two on here in the fifth inning. Perk at second, Wagner at first. The one pitch coming to Ernie Clement. That one outside 2 and 0. So if if if let’s say hot dogs were good for you, how many could you eat? Uh 200 pitch to Ernie and he chased that one. It’s now two in one. You know, I don’t I don’t have the biggest appetite. You know, I’m 150 pounds soaking wet. I would say like one every couple of innings. I’m not doing one an inning. I’m not I’m not eating nine. So I’d say half of that. It’s like four. Five. Five max. Max. And I’m not eating anything else. I could eat nine. Oh yeah. You’re like what? 65. Probably about 220. What are you? Yeah. 591 150. Give me 70 more pounds. I’ll throw in a couple more hot dogs. I think last year when I went with some buddies, I think uh I think the the the high in our group was eight. Gonna have to go to another looney dog night and test the theory. What’s the guy’s name that that wins the the hot dog eating concept contest? Joey Chestnut. Joey Chestnut. Let’s go see his stats real quick. Lament two pitch outside. He stayed off that one as Perkins missed with the sweeper. Three and two. I I want to say it’s something ridiculous like 71 hot dogs in 8 minutes or something. It’s it’s it’s unbelievable what Joey Chestnut has done. I was going to see how big he was. Oh, the 3-2 pitch outside. Clement stayed patient, earns the free pass, and the Blue Jays have the bases loaded. Pretty good at bat for Ernie Clement. Took that tough slider, that tough sweeper off the plate outside. Takes a walk. Blue Jays have the bases loaded now with two outs in this inning. It’ll bring up Miles Straw, the number nine hitter for the Blue Jays. And he certainly had his issues with Luis Severino in his first two at bats, but now his first chance to get a different look at somebody else and he’ll deal with Jack Perkins. We’ll see if Stro can do some damage right here. Anyways, Joey Chestnut is much larger than he 61 230. Well, he’s got what? 3 in and 70 lb, 80 lb and about 65 hot dogs more than you. Go right ahead. You can have those hot dogs, Joey. First pitch to Straw and he sticks the bat out and gets an excuse me base hit into right field. Straw is going to cash in at least one as Kirk comes in to score and the Blue Jays lead 5 nothing. Well, Miles Straw has been struggling with the fast ball all night long and you could see that he was cheating to that fast ball. It was 96 mph on the outer third. He got the barrel to it. Had a pretty good line drive to right field. Lawrence Butler was playing in. So, that run from second base couldn’t score. The Blue Jays now lead 5 nothing here in the fifth inning. So, they’ve scored four in this inning. Base is still juiced with two away. To the top of the order we go. Nathan Lucas and the first pitch from Perkins down in the dirt. The Jays have gone around in the order. This is the second at bat of the inning for Lucas. He led things off about three hours ago when this top half of the inning started. Top of the fifth. Blue Jays leading 5 nothing. And the pitch to Lucas outside now 200. All joking aside, we’re about an hour and a half into this ball game and we are at the midway point in the top of the fifth inning and Lucas sends one in. I was going to say he’s a right field, but it actually ricocheted off Curts at first and into foul territory. It’s going to end up cashing two runs for the Blue Jays. And we didn’t get a great view of exactly what happened. I think Curts took it off the right shoulder as he tried to make the play on the hot shot at first. And as the ball ricocheted off the body of Curts, Toronto was able to get two runs in and Lucas ends up at second base. It took a nasty skip off the dirt right by the first base bag and thus then hit Curts badly in that right shoulder and he went down hard. I bet you give that a base hit. Yeah, like you said, a really tough hop. Pretty sure no first baseman would have been able to get that baseball off the right shoulder of Nick Curts. Really tough play. Obviously, two runs for the Jays. So, it moves Straw to third. Lucas moved up a bag to second. And now second and third for George Springer who looks at the first pitch down in the dirt and then takes a big cut on the second pitch. Now even in the count at 1 and one. It’s been a long top half of this fifth inning, but you’ll take it if you’re a Blue Jay fan as Toronto has scored six in this inning. They lead 7 nothing. The 1-1 pitch just caught the outside edge. Springer didn’t like it. It’s one and two. Perkins looks in at the sign. Fires on the one-two pitch. Springer got a piece of it. Stays alive at one and two. Here comes the one-two offering. Springer again gets a piece, fouls this one up and over the back stop, more so toward the dugout there on the first base side. He’ll do it again at one and two. I bet George Springer wants that that pitch back. That was a sweeper right down the middle. A little bit of a spinner from Perkins. George Springer was all over it. Just fouled it back. Springer already reached in this inning on an error and eventually ended up coming around to score, but he’s not going to have a chance to do it again right here as he strikes out to end the inning, but the Blue Jays score six. We are in the Timber Mart broadcast booth. Eric Smith and Chris Laroo with you. Thanks for joining us on a Friday evening. If you’re on the East Coast, it’s coming up to 11:40 Eastern time. If you’re on the west, 8:40 comfortable. You had to think about that for a second. I had I did have to do the math. 11US 3 is eight. Okay. Yep. Max Scherzer still dealing here in the bottom of the fifth inning ahead 01. And he bounced the second pitch to Max Muny down in the dirt. Missed the curve ball. It’s one and one. Sherzer has pitched very well tonight and now is working with a 7 nothing lead. Has given up just two hits, one walk, six strikeouts. And Muny got underneath that one. Battles it back. Is it going to stay in the field of play? It will. And an underhand grab on the Oakland on deck circle. Alejandro Kirk makes the play. And a big smile from ear to ear from Kirk. One away. Well, I think he was trying to avoid that batter circle over there. That on deck circle along the Blue Jays dugout cuz I he slipped on that batter that sorry, that on deck circle earlier this season. So, you could see that he was trying to avoid it. Reached over it. Made a pretty nice play for the first out. Big cut on the first pitch from Gellof. Zack Gellof missing. Couldn’t catch up with that fast ball. Max threw it in at 94 miles an hour. It’s 01. Sher still hasn’t thrown 60 pitches. This is 60 right here. That one a curveball. Skipped in the dirt. One and one. And like I said, in his last start, he threw 72. I’ I’d imagine he’d probably go over 80. Now what? Let walk me through this. Would you take him out just to rest him because you’ve now got a seven nothing lead or would you let him get as you just said to the 70 or the 80 and let him have another inning beyond this one? Well, there’s no there’s no letting Max Sher do anything. Max Sher’s coming up with whatever he wants to do. Fair point. And I think it all comes down to health. If Max Scherzer feels like the thumb is healthy and he wants to build up that number of pitches, then he’s probably going to push it to to 80, maybe even 85 pitches, I would imagine. the two-1 pitch. This one sended to right field down the line toward the what do they call those? BMS. Two and two. And how about the lady holding an infant on the burm makes the play. Well, hopefully that just rolled up next to her and she didn’t have to actually catch that baseball. Save a save the infant. The two- two pitch. Strike three and Sherzer just got a gift. He’ll take it. Run if you’re a Blue Jay fan. Two away. Well, Zack Gellof is beside himself right now. Junior Valentine made an emphatic strike three call. Alejandro Kirk doing everything he could to frame that pitch. But on that replay, it was well below the strike zone. Pretty good change up though. Had a lot of movement. It’s the ball though. Yellof with a long stare at Junior Valentine. Brings up Denzel Clark with two down. The number nine hitter for the A’s. He struck out in his first at bat. Looking to avoid doing so right here and trying to keep this inning alive for the A’s. They trail 7 nothing. Big cut on the 01 pitch as he chased after that slider. It’s 02. Sherzer with the 02 pitch. Swinging a miss. Backto back strikeouts. The eighth K of the game for Sherzer. And that ends the inning. We go to the sixth. Blue Jays leading 7 nothing. Get insurance. That’s really big on care at dejaane.com/care today. Blue Jays leading 7 nothing as we get set to start this sixth inning. And Vladimir Guerrero steps in in the first pitch is in for a strike. 01 to Vlatty. Guerrero in his last at bat notching career hit number 1,00 sends a hot shot down to third and that one is taken by Anduhar over to first to record the out one. Oswaldo is the new pitcher for the Athletics. He’s two and four this season. Nine games started 12 games total. He has a 6.14 RA 34 strikeouts in 48 and a third innings. And now Beo gets the deal with Bo Bashette. And Bo swings at the first pitch and sends a line drive base hit into center field kind of toward right center. Cut off there by Clark who tosses it into second base. And it’s another base hit for Bo Bett. Well, that’s just a good piece of hitting. You know, when Bo is seeing the baseball well, he’s going the other way. He’s using the big part of the field. And that was just a really nice line drive the other way to the right center gap. Denzel Clark cutting it off, keeping Bobette at first base. Addison Barger now steps up to the plate for the Blue Jays with a man at first. Bobette got there moments ago and first pitch swinging. Barger gets underneath one. It’s down the left field side and it’s looking toward the seats. I think Barger down on the count now. Oh, and by the way, with the pitching change with Beetto coming in, another shout out to our friends at Home Hardware. Pitching Change is brought to you by Home Hardware, the official home improvement retailer for the Toronto Blue Jays. Locallyowned, genuinely Canadian. Top eight Kansas City leading the Mets 3-1. Blue Jays leading the Athletics 7 nothing in the top of the sixth inning with one away and one on. O Bashette is at first base and at the plate is Addison Barger. He’s down in the count 01. I’m surprised you weren’t talking about how long that pitch delay was. Going to leave that to you. That’s something that that usually irritates you. A lot of things that irritate me trying to trying to be a better man. Comes the 01 pitch to Addison Barger. Fouls that one off. 02. just missed that pitch. It was a fast ball on the inside part of the plate at 96 miles an hour. Was just a hair behind it. Barger batting 265. Had a base hit in his last at bat. last inning. He was a part of that six-run inning for the Blue Jays who lead seven nothing here in the sixth. 02 pitch down in the dirt. Nice block there by Langaliers. And that will hold Bette at first. Barger still live at 1 and two. What’s the atmosphere like at Sacramento Kings games? It actually was great back in the day at Arco Arena back in the real heyday of the Sacramento Kings when you think about Chris Weber and Doug Christie Vlad Devots. It was off the charts awesome. It took a dip for quite a while, but they’ve got the brand new arena in downtown Sacramento, the Golden One Center. It’s pretty decent. Larger swing and miss strikes out two away. So, they do support their teams. It’s not like they only have one, but Well, they have two now, I guess, but it’s not like it’s a running thing where the attendance isn’t great. Yeah. Yep. I think it’s I think it’s a city that’s, you know, trying to make a bit of a comeback in terms of putting investment and infrastructure into that that downtown core. Like the Golden One Center, the new arena has helped. Alejandro Kirk steps in now with two away. Pette at first and Kirk working on a two for two night. The All-Star is up to 311 in terms of his average. Couple of singles, a walk, a run, and two runs batted in. Down on the count 01. Vo with the pitch and Kirk gets underneath it. Tens went on a ride to center field, but it’s going to stay in the yard on the track. Underneath it to make the grab is Denzel Clark and that will retire the Blue Jays. 7 nothing is the score as we go to the bottom of the six. Vacuums it up, throws the second one, and then to first double Sportset 590, the band and the Sports Net Radio Network. Eric Smith and Chris Laroo with you getting set to start the bottom of the sixth inning. Blue Jays leading the Athletics 7 nothing. We are in the Timbermart broadcast booth in the first of three between the Jays and A’s and it’s certainly looking good for Max Scherzer. He’s got a sevenrun lead and he has been dealing. He’s out there here in the sixth inning to start things off against Butler. Top of the order, Lawrence Butler 0 for two in the ball game. The Athletics with just two hits tonight. Sherzer down in the count one 10 comes back with the fast ball fouled off by Clark. It’s one and one. The interesting thing about Max Sherzer is he’s pitching like this is a one- nothing ball game. He’s not going out there thinking I’m just going to pound the strike zone with with fast balls. He’s mixing in pitches, pitching backwards. Just what he does. The one-1 inside just missed with that fast ball. Butler stayed off it. It’s two and one. 69 pitches thrown for Sherzer. Kirk setting up. That one came a little bit down low. Just missed with the change up. It’s now three and one. How about that? You’re up 7 nothing. You’re behind in the count to the leadoff hitter and you mix in a change up. The 3-1 comes back with another change up. Butler swings and misses. It’s three and two. That’s something that would fire up a manager if if if it was anybody else other than Max Sherzer on the mound right now. The 3-2 pitch and this one sent out to second base. Down on one knee to make the scoop is Ernie Clement over to first to Vlatty to record the out. One away. And the reason why I say that, you’re up seven nothing. You’re deep into this ball game. Deeper into this ball game. It’s the bottom of the sixth inning. The leadoff hitter is up. You don’t want to walk him. That’s that’s rule number one. If you’re up by seven runs in the sixth inning, you don’t walk the lead off hitter on a on a change up in a 3-1 count. Every manager will tell you just pound the strike zone. Pound the strike zone. Fill up that strike zone. Let them hit their way on. Max Sher makes in a change up free run. 3-1 and gets the first out of the inning. Comes inside with the heat. Blocked at 95 to Brent Rooker. 10. He has struck out Rooker in each of his first two at bats. 19 home runs on the season, 50 runs batted in, a 271 average, and he has not been able to solve Sherzer tonight. He’s now ahead though, 20. Max missing well outside with that curveball. See who he comes back with right here. Pitch count now sitting at 74. This will be 75 in mere moments. The leg kick and the delivery. outside. Missed with the fast ball. 3- 0. Max just had a quick look over at the Blue Jay dugout. The three- 0 pitch catches the outside edge with another fast ball. It’s now three and one. Rooker trying to get on. See if the A’s can start something as they trail by a touchdown. It’s 7 nothing Toronto. Bottom of the sixth. The 3-1 pitch and it’s fouled off on a cutter from Sherzer as Max battles back to three and two. Max Sherzer’s really comfortable throwing that cutter, that change up. the 3-2 pitch and this one is slapped into right field and it’s going to drop in for a base hit just in front of Addison Barger. A one out hit, a single for Brent Rooker. Well, that wasn’t a bad pitch. It was a change up that that kind of sunk in on the hands of Rooker out in front of Addison Barger in right field. But I think that if Addison Barger dove for this baseball, he probably could have caught it. But you don’t want to take that chance with one out, up by seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. I think keeping that ball in front of you is the most important thing right now. Brent Rooker ends up at first base. You keep that double play in order. So this brings up Nick Curts, one for one in the ball game. Had a single in his first at bat, walked in his second, and he gets underneath one on the first pitch from Sherzer. sends it on a ride to center field. And there’s no doubt about that one. It’s a two-run shot for Kurts. As the A’s are on the board, they’ve cut the Blue Jay lead to 72. Well, that ball was absolutely crushed. It was a fast ball right down the middle. Nick Hurt certainly didn’t miss it. Hit it right off that batter’s eye, that big green batter’s eye in center field. 106 mph, 433 feet out to center. 16th home run of the season for Kirks as now Shay Langalers will step up for the A’s with one out here in the sixth inning. And Oakland getting their first run runs of the game trailing now 72. Sher up to 80 pitches thrown. Here’s the 01 and it’s in for a strike. Bottom part of the zone. Got the fast ball at 95 to catch that edge. 02. Langalers 0 for two tonight. They’ll have to battle back in the count right here. Max looking to sit him down. 02 pitch down low outside. Kirk with the backhand stab. It’s one and two. Sherzer with the pitch. Tried to come inside. It’s fouled off by Langaloo. He’ll do it again at one and two. The interesting thing about Max Sher giving up those two runs now. John Schneider probably isn’t going to bring in popup guy in the bullpen. He could have maybe thought about bringing in Tommy Nance. Maybe Robinson Pena on a seven nothing ball game. And now you have to think about bringing in your medium to higher leverage guys. This one is sent out to short. Scooped up by Bette. Whips it over to Vlatty at first to sit down Langalers. Two away. And the reason I say that is because this this is such a hitter friendly ballpark that that things can change in a hurry. Three-run inning is not out of the realm of possibilities for anybody. Now, are you surprised that Shers are still there with 84 pitches thrown or No, I think I said before the ball game he would throw between 85 90 pitches and again it’s all about how he feels. He’ll look into the dugout. First pitch swinging sodum sends one on a decent ride out to center field and it makes its way over the wall. That thing kept sailing and you just called it a three-run inning. Not out of the question. Well, it’s a reality now. A solo home run for Tyler Soderstrom and Oakland cuts the Toronto lead to 73. And you have to believe that that’s a that ball got out because of the park that we’re in. Tyler Sodesttorm didn’t really hit it all that well. Got underneath that change up from Max Scherer. The change up was a little bit elevated. He put a good swing on it, but that ball went a lot further than I thought it would go. All of a sudden, this is a ball game. 73 Toronto now here in the sixth. That thing just kept traveling. You got to assume it’s probably the dead air as well. So Sherzer was cruising through five and he’s now run into issues here in the sixth inning. He’s given up three runs, two home runs, and he has had at least one strike out in every inning until this one. Well, I guarantee if you ask Max Cruzer after the ball game if it was the the stadium that that caused those home runs, you’ll say, “No, I missed the fast ball over the middle. Didn’t hurt Curts. That was right down the middle and I left that change up elevated to Tyler Sodestrom. I I mean I’m assuming he’ll say that because that’s exactly what happened. Got to make better pitches. The galander had 2-1. The pitch from Sherzer inside, but the change up was a nasty one that Andhar chased after. Swinging a miss. It’s two and two. See if Max can get out of the inning right here. Blue Jays leading 73. Bottom of the sixth. A two- two pitch. And this one is sent into right field. It’s in the field of play. Over toward the wall, toward the line. Making the grab is Addison Barger in right field to sit down the Athletics. But again, they get three and they cut the Blue Jay lead to four runs. It’s 73. Let’s see if we can figure out the following baseball slang term. Next phrase is oppo taco. Do you know what it means? Oppo taco. A home run hit to the opposite field. Boston taco. This is Toronto Blue Jays baseball. Springer charges a ball to left field. is in the seats and the Blue Jays are on the board on Sports Net 590, the van and the Sportset radio network. Top of the seventh inning and the Blue Jays lead the Athletics 73. Will Wagner leading things off for Toronto and the first pitch no good to Wagner. Second pitch catches the outside edge on a change up from Beo. It’s one and one. The righty Oswaldo Beto against the lefty Wagner misses on the 1-1 pitch. That one just outside. It’s now two-1. Fast clocked at 94. Two-1 pitch again outside. Slider no good. And now Wagner heads 3-1 hoping to get on and set things up for the Blue Jays in this seventh inning. The 3-1 pitch and Wagner dribbles it right back to Beo who picks it up. Underhand toss over to Curts at first. One away. Pretty nice play for Beto on the mound there. Reached down, get that baseball and ran it over to first base. Little underhand for the first out of the inning. And this will bring up Ernie Clement. By the way, kudos to you. You tried hard, but it just didn’t work. N vote N. Oh, yeah. Did not make it to the All-Star game, but shout out to obviously Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Alejandro Kirk. First pitch. Lament got a piece of it. Sends it foul toward the back stop. 01. Well, good thing we didn’t get those t-shirts made. That would have been a waste. They might be uh collector’s items, though. Clement 0 for one tonight. Did cash in Toronto’s first run on a sack fly. He looks at the second pitch from Beto outside the slider. No good. It’s one and one. Ern Ernie’s He’s struggled a little bit over the last two weeks or so. He’s 11 for his last 51. 216 average. He gets underneath this one and sends a popup out to center field. And underneath it, plenty of room to make the grab. Denzel Clark two away. I think that if if he stayed above 300, maybe 30 305 310 like he was hovering around last time you were here, I think he would have had more of a chance. But now that he’s around 291, the power numbers just aren’t there to get him to that that Allstar game. So, I’m not surprised. Although, I was doing everything I could to try to get him there. Did you make him aware of this? No. Miles Straw just took one right in the back. That pitch got away from him. tried to come with the fast ball and it was right between the shoulder blades on Miles Straw. He missed by a lot too. Shay Langalers the catcher was set up outside down and away with that target. Missed right in the middle of that back right where the numbers are. That’s a big miss but allows the Blue Jays to keep the inning going here. And back to the top of the order we go for Nathan Lucas working on a two for four night. As Chris mentioned earlier in front of a lot of friends and family, the Sacramento kid would love to do a little more right here. Give the Jays a little more insurance. They led seven nothing. They gave back three. They lead 73. Top seven. First pitch to Lucas down low outside 10. He did everything Sacramento. Born in Sacramento, high school in Sacramento, college in Sacramento. Who would have thought he’s in the big leagues in Sacramento now? One pitch and taking off. Straw head first dive into second base ahead of the throw. And it’s a stolen base for Miles Straw. I’m assuming the A’s are going to take a look at that. That was really close at second base. Max Muny is kind of looking over to that that dugout right now. That’s a really good throw from Shay Langalers just missing Miles Straw at second on the out of town scoreboard brought to you by the St. Louis Bar and Grill. Top nine, San Diego now leading Philadelphia 4-2. And the Mets have come back. They were down 3-1. They now lead Kansas City 4-3 top nine. 200 count to Lucas 3 0 as Beto just missed inside. Again, all this coming right now for the Blue Jays with two away. Straw got hit by a pitch, then stole second base. And he’s in scoring position for Nathan Lucas. Here comes the three- 0 pitch down low and a free pass for Lucas. Two on with two away for the Blue Jays. Well, you could tell that Beto has lost the release point there, losing the command over the last couple of hitters. Hit Miles Straw in the middle of the back of the back and walking Nathan Lucas there. That last sinker from Beto was really nowhere close. Well below that strike zone as now George Springer steps up. And George has had a rough night. Toronto with 10 hits on the evening, but George 0 for four. I would love to get in on the party right here. Big cut on the first pitch. Couldn’t catch up with that slider. 01. Springer 276 with 16 home runs. 53 runs batted in. He does have a run scored in this game. Struck out in his last at bat. We’ll see what he does right here with two on. It’s an 01 count outside. One and one. Oo gets the sign. Not of approval, turns and fires on the 1-1. Just missed outside. Springer held off on that slider. It’s two and one. Blue Jay fans in attendance trying to make some noise for George Springer. And Springer gets underneath that 2-1 pitch and whips his bat down to the ground. He is not happy with himself right now. Underneath it at second base to make the grab is Zack Gellof. And that will end it for the Blue Jays as we go to the bottom of the seventh. Toronto leading 73. You’re listening to The big hits, all the great brats. You got to be kidding me. And all the swagger. Relive the day’s biggest plays all in one lightning fast hour. You better believe it. Quick pitch. Late nights and early mornings only on MLB Network. That’s Mike Piaza after he hit an eighth inning go-ahad home run in the first New York Mets home game after 911. Your moments like this and more on the MLB app and MLB.com. Let’s apply. This is Toronto Blue Jays baseball. Swinging a fly ball right field. Sportset 590 the van and the sportset radio network. Bottom of the seventh inning. Blue Jays and Athletics. Toronto leading 73 as we get set to start things here for the A’s. They scored three in the last inning. Down 7 nothing. And the night is done for Max Scherzer as Braden Fischer comes into the ball game for Toronto. And the first pitch into Max Muny is no good. The fast ball missing. One count. Muny 0 for two tonight. Fisher comes back on the 10. Up high, way high, 20. Pitching change brought to you by Home Hardware, the official home improvement retailer for the Toronto Blue Jays. Locallyowned, genuinely Canadian. The 20 is sent into left field on a pretty good shot. Muny’s going to have his first hit of the ball game. Over to make the snag is Lucas. And that will hold Muny at first with a leadoff base hit. That was just a hanging breaking ball from Braden Fischer. Maxy does a good job hitting the barrel to that baseball, ripping it down the line at first base with nobody out in this inning. Brings up Zack Gellof who has struck out in each of his first two at bats. See what he can do with Fischer right here. Fisher missing with the slider. One and again up high with the second pitch. The curveball no good. Two. Brendan Little, the lefty warming up in the Jays pen. Yeah, with that all-star break this week, it seems like John Schneider is not going to mess around, especially in a 7-3 ball game. The 200 and a little check swing by Gellof. He offered at it, hit the bat, fouled it off down into the dirt. It’s two and one. Fischer stares in at the sign from Kirk. Quick glance over at first base. Max my is there. Here comes the 2-1 pitch. And that one chopped fouled dribble down the third base side by Gellof. Now even in the count at two and two. Little ground ball would be nice here. 643 double play. How about that? I’ll take it. I will take it. put an end to any little athletic threat. They jumped on Sherzer last inning, got two home runs and three runs and all but chopped the Blue Jay lead in half. It’s 73 Toronto leading in the bottom of the seventh inning. This one sent Fou down into right field into the stands. We’ll do it again at two and two. Like I said last inning, games can change in a hurry in this ballpark. She played in this ballpark in the Pacific Coast League in Triple A. And times you give a popup to the infield and it seems like it just goes forever. The 2-2. It’s a grounder, but it’s a weak one toward the mound just off the right side to where the third base side. And as Fiser came off the mound to make the play, he bobbled it with the bare hand. And safe at first will be Gellof. There was no throw. So now two on with none out for the A’s. Well, Zack Gellof, like you said, didn’t hit that ball all that hard. It was a tough play for Braden Fischer. I’m not even sure if he gets to this baseball and fields it cleanly that he gets Gellof at first base. It would have been a tough throw falling away from first base, but Gellof, it’s his second hit of the season. He’s now two for 25. None away here in the seventh inning. Bottom of the order, the Toronto kit. Denzel Clark steps in. 0 for two tonight. He as well as Gellof. Two strikeouts in their first two at bats. Gellof just got on. Clark would love to do the same. The one pitch down low inside. Two. Strike here. You don’t want to load the base. Nobody out. Especially with a guy like Denzel Clark up to play right now that swings and misses quite a bit. The 200 pitch in for a strike. Slatter was good. It’s two and one. Quick glance out at second base. Fischer turns and fires on the 2-1. And Clark went after that one. Another nasty slider. It’s two and two. The two- two pitch and Clark sends one into right field. Lots of room for Barger to get over, make the grab, comes up firing and whips it into second base to Ernie Clement. That’s a smart throw. You don’t want to throw that ball over the cut off man trying to get that guy at third base. Maxy would have would have had third base pretty easily even though Addison Barger has a great arm. Did a good job just getting into getting it into second base, keeping the double play in order, and keeping that run at first base. Yeah. So, as Chris just mentioned, Muny tags, goes from second to third, so he’s at third. Gellof stays at first. It’s runners on the corners for the athletics and the Blue Jays are going to make a pitching change right now. It’s a great night for baseball. Blue Jays baseball brought to you by Brown Rust Protection. Back to the game we go. Here’s Eric and Chris. All right, thanks very much. Brendan Little coming in for the Blue Jays now. The lefty and he faces the left-handed bat of Lawrence Butler. Top of the order for the Athletics. One out, two on, and the A’s trailing by four. Little the one pitch in for a strike with the sinker. It’s one and one. This pitching change is brought to you by Home Hardware, the official home improvement retailer for the Toronto Blue Jays. Locallyowned, genuinely Canadian. Here comes the 1-1 pitch from Little Swing and miss from Butler. It’s one and two. Back-to- back sinkers there from Little. Let’s see what he comes with right here. Quick glance at first. Little turns, fires to Butler and got to chase it. A knuckle curve strike up for Little. Two away. That’s a great at bat for Brendan Little. He’s struggled quite a bit over the last, I don’t know, month and a half or so throwing strikes, throwing first pitch strikes. He does it perfectly there, getting two quick strikes on Lawrence Butler with the fast ball and then mixes in that knuckle curve below the strike zone. Almost unhitable. Brings up Brent Rooker. Had a base hit in his last at bat. and he was on base for the Nick Curts two-run homer. Brooker has a ton of pop in his bat. The DH batting from the right side against the lefty little. And the first pitch from Little Looked like it was low, but you’ll take it if you’re a Blue Jay fan as it’s a called strike on the sinker. 01. Brooker didn’t like that call either. Kind of looked away with disgust. That’s a big strike outside. Sinker. No good. One and one. Rooker digs in. Little looks over to first now. Turns and fires on the 1-1. Nice block behind the plate by Kirk. That one was down in the dirt on the knuckle curve. And Kirk got down and dirty and blocked that one to keep it in front. It’s two and one. That ball was actually in front of home plate. Really tough block those kind of pitches. Run saving block right there from Kirk. Big cut on the 2-1. Brooker couldn’t get after that knuckle curve. It’s now two and two and Little will look to try and get out of the inning. The two- two pitch outside down low missing with that knuckle curve. It’s three and two. Look who’s standing on deck. Nick Curts already has a home run in this ball game. Of course, he’s a lefty. Left on left matchup is something that’s that’s tough, especially with Brendan Little standing on that mound, but you don’t want to load the bases here. First and third, two away. The 3-2 pitch, swinging a miss. Little gets the strike out. Backto back pays to get out of the inning. And the Blue Jays go to the eighth with a 73 lead. Sports 590 the sportset radio network. Top of the eighth inning. Blue Jays leading 73. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will start things off for the Blue Jays. Oswaldo Beto still on the mound for the Athletics and Guerrero is going to reach. I believe that will be called an error on Muny at short. It was kind of up the middle, but Muny certainly looked like he had a play on that Chris and he just bobbled it and Guerrero was safe at first. Well, there was a lot of spin on that baseball. It actually hit off the side of the mound and took a left turn. Max my still needs to make that play, but not an easy play up the middle. I’m assuming they’re going to give that an error. That’s definitely an error. No official word yet. We’ll keep our eye on that one, but either way, you’ll take it for the Blue Jays as they get the leadoff man on here in the top of the eighth inning. Bo Bette digs in now. Two for four tonight for Bo. Batting 281 as we speak. Glad first. Be fires to Betts on that pitch. rips one into left field, but it’s a line drive out as it was pretty much right at Tyler Soderrum. One away. Bobette was right on that slider. It was a little spinner over the middle of the plate. Bobette barreled it up and hit it right at Tyler Sodestrom. As we look at the standings in real time, the Yankees just a game and a half back of the Blue Jays. But of course, with this game not ending yet, if the Blue Jays secure the victory, they maintain their twoame lead over the Yankees in the American League East. Don’t look now though, the Red Sox continue to play well as they win again tonight. They have won eight in a row, a major league best eight in a row. Flat at first, one out. larger ahead in the count. 10 and now 20 as he looks at the slider low and outside from Beto. Seems like it was only a week ago we thought the the Red Sox would be sellers at the deadline. Doesn’t look like that now. Well, especially after the deal they already made. We were wondering what might come of them and they’ve only played better since getting rid of one of their best players. The 200 in for a strike as Vito throws in a pretty nice slider toward the top of his own. It’s two and one. Barger ahead in the count. Vlad’s got the lead at first. The two-1 pitch. Larger cuts at it, gets a piece, sends it straight back. It’s two and two. Yel Rodriguez is now getting loose in that Blue Jays bullpen, but I would imagine that Brendan Little is going to stay in this ball game. Slugger Nick Kurts is due up first for the Athletics. Hurts at first right now holding on Vlatty who still has the slight lead. Vito takes a look over there. Turns and fires to Barger on the 2-2. Rips one foul deep down the left field line. We’ll do it again at two and two and Barger just got underneath one. Sends it out to right field, but it’s not going to be deep enough. It was high. It was deep, but not deep enough. Making the grab is Lawrence Butler in right field who whips it into second base to keep Vlatty at first. Two away. That was a hanging slider from Beto and Addison Barger was just a little bit out in front of it. Got underneath it and hit it a mile high. Lawrence Butler catching that thing right in front of the warning track, but he missed a moonshot by about I don’t know 10 feet maybe. It brings up Alejandro Kirk. Two for three tonight for the Blue Jay Allstar. And he’s first pitch swinging skies one up and over the back stop. 01. We are in the Timbermark broadcast booth in the top of the eighth inning with the Blue Jays leading by four at 73. Kirk steps out of the box for a moment, adjust his batter gloves. Vito digs back in on the mound, waiting for Kirk to come back in. And we are set to go. Vlatty with the lead at first. Two down here and the 01 pitch coming from Veto. And Kirk sends it into center field on a line. Backpedaling couple of steps making the grab as Denzel Clark to sit down the Blue Jays. Bottom of the coming Toronto leading by four. Bottom of the eighth inning, Toronto leading 73. And the A’s will have Nick Curts leading things off. And as you said, you called it correctly. Brendan Little stays into the ball game for the lefty on lefty matchup. And the first pitch in from Little to Curts is a strike knuckle curve high in the zone is good. 01. Well, Tyler Serstrom is coming up third in this inning. And he’s a left-handed hitter as well. And Little just got hurts the chase after that knuckle curve down on the dirt. 02. So, I’m wondering if Brendan Little will get three batters in this inning or he’s just out to face Nick Curts. Guess we’ll see. 02 down low. Hurts laid off that one. One and two. Toronto with a four-run lead. They jumped out to a one- nothing lead, then added six more to make it 7 nothing. Oakland came back on two home runs, a two-run shot and a solo shot to make it 7-3. And that’s where we stand right now. The one-two pitch outside. Knuckle curve no good. Two and two. Inside up high. Three and two. The 3-2 pitch. Swinging a miss. Kurt sits down. His helmet came flying off as he strikes out. That’s three straight KS for Little going back to last inning as well. One away. How about that 3-2 knuckle curve from Brendan Little. Got to have a lot of confidence in that pitch. A little bit of a fist pump after Nick Kurt swings through that pitch, but that is a great 3-2 pitch. Like you said, the helmet comes flying off. Brennan Little is in fact going to leave this ball game. Surprised by that or not? Your day in baseball starts with MLB Central. Let’s get it started. Lead off your morning with in-depth breakdowns. So, the pitching change is brought to you by Home Hardware, the official home improvement retailer for the Toronto Blue Jays. locallyowned, genuinely Canadian. Rodriguez checks in with a 73 lead here in the eighth inning. One down and he’ll face the right-handed bat catcher Shay Langalers. And the first pitch from Rodriguez, the Heater 96 inside 10. swinging a miss on the slider. Took about 15 miles per hour off that pitch. It’s one and one. Deep breath from Rodriguez. turns and fires on the one-1 pitch outside. Missed with that slider. Two and one. Dropped the arm angle just a little bit on that slider. Couldn’t couldn’t quite get Shay Langalers to bite on it. Just outside off the plate. Langelier’s 0 for three in this ball game. The two-1 pitch and he rips it down the left field line. Foul. Missed it by about 10 feet or so, maybe more. A long foul ball for Langalers and now two and two. Little bit of a spinning slider at the top of the strike zone. Shay Langers was out front just missed it. The two- two came inside on Langers and he fought that one off and sends it foul up and over the back stop. Came in on his hands. Do it again at two and two. Those still in attendance trying to make some noise and rally on the Athletics. Down four here in the bottom of the eighth inning. Blue Jays trying to secure a win in the first of three against the Athletics at Sutter Health Park Stadium in Sacramento. A two- two pitch down low outside. Three and two. Rodriguez fires on the 3-2 pitch and he gets him on the slider. Swinging a miss. Langelier strikes out. Two away. That’s a big out especially with Tyler Solderstrom coming up next. Already has a home run in this ball game. I think Shay Langelier is there on a pretty good curveball. Sorry, a slider. Yario Rodriguez looking at the side from Kirk with two down here in the eighth eighth inning and the first pitch in for a strike. Fast ball 96 01 count. Totrom two for three tonight. The lefty bat against the righty. Rodriguez slaps at the second pitch. Another fast ball. This one fouled off and it’s quickly 02. Rodriguez trying to get out of the inning right here with another strike out. The 02 pitch missing outside. One and two. Little hesitation move with that leg lift. Didn’t work. Strom kind of just stared at that pitch. You’ve told me before you’re not a big fan of that, right? You don’t you don’t think it does much. The one two down low the splitter. It’s two and two. Kenley Jansen has a really good one. Other than that, I’m not sold on anybody else. But Kentley Jansen has perfected the hesitation and I think it really does affect hitters timing. If the inning stays alive, I’m going to ask you a question here. Two and two. The inning will not stay alive. So, forget the question. Another strike out for Rodriguez. In fact, Rodriguez and Little combined to strike out the side. And we go to the ninth inning with the Blue Jays leading 7-3. Gays leading 73. And this inning begins with the number seven hitter in the Blue Jay lineup, Will Wagner. One for two tonight. and he fouls off the 1-1 pitch. It’s going to make its way into the stands about five rows deep. Kind of a lazy effort to get after that ball. One fan gets gets a souvenir. Sort of like, no, no, you take it. It’s late. It’s late. Other venues, they’re they’re literally fighting over the ball. They’re in in in Sacramento. Yeah. No, you can have it. Go ahead. The one-two pitch. Wagner punches one into center. It’s sinking. Diving to make the stab and missing. An uncharacteristic miss is Denzel Clark. He normally comes up with everything and it goes off the heel of his glove and in for a hit for Will Wagner. Well, he’s made a lot of highlight reel catches recently over the last three weeks or so. And that one was almost another one. It just skipped the dirt of the grass. He got such a good jump on that baseball. Will Wagner ends up with his second base hit of the ball game though. He’ll take it. And Clark was sprawled out Superman style parallel to the ground and just missed making another spectacular grab. So, the Blue Jays will take it and try to do something with it as Wagner is at first. And it brings up Ernie Clement. And Clement had to dance out of the way of that first pitch from Beto. Here comes the one and Clement rips one to third base. And makes the stab over to second for one on the first for two double play. That’s a great play from Anduhar over there at third base. Ernie Clement ripped that baseball right at him. Nice clean play. Throw to second base off to first base. Easy double play. So just like that, two down now for the Blue Jays here in the top of the ninth inning in the Timber Mart broadcast booth. Eric Smith and Chris Laroo with you. Blue Jays looking to secure a victory here in the first of three against the Athletics. They have a four-run lead. We’ll see if it stays that way going into the bottom half of the inning. Or can the Jays tack on more? They’re going to have to do it in a two-out rally as their number nine hitter is up right now. Miles Straw one for three tonight. Straw had a base hit back in the fifth inning. Hit by a pitch in the seventh. And the 01 pitch outside one and one. 1-1 pitch. A slider catches the outer part of the zone. Oo tosses it in there for a one and two count. Now looking to get out of this inning and bring up his bats in the bottom of the ninth. Wow. Straw actually didn’t like that call. immediately looked back and had a question for Junior Valentine outside two and two. I don’t think Junior Valentine’s been great tonight, but he’s been consistent cuz he’s been kind of allowing pitches outside the zone. I think on both sides, I think that’s the the biggest key when you think of an umpire’s zone. It’s just consistency. The two Ross slaps at it, sends it foul first base side deep into the stands. Do it again at two and two. Oo gets the sign from Langalers. Fires that one down toward the dirt. Three and two. Straw trying to get on and bring up top of the order. And the 3-2 pitch was high in the zone, but a called strikeout. Straw again doesn’t like it. Has a few words for Valentine. And he sits down. We go to the bottom of the ninth. Blue Jays leading. Take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager said the following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something. These people cheer. We all did. The Blue Jays lead the A’s 7 to3 as we head to the bottom of the ninth inning in Sacramento. Jeff Hoffman on the mound. Here’s Eric Smith and Chris Laroo. All right, thanks very much. Show Hoffman takes over with that 4.46 erra. and comes in with the heat on the first pitch. High blocked at 96 to Miguel Anduhar. 10 counts and back with a strike on the second pitch. The slider catches the outside part of the zone. One and one. Hoffman gets the sign from Kirk. Nods his head in approval. Getting set for the 1-1. And this one sent fouled down the third baseline by Anduhar. One and two. Max Scherzer in line for his first victory of the season. Barring a big A’s comeback here in the bottom of the ninth. They’re down four. Here comes the one-two pitch from Hoffman. The kick and delivery outside down in the dirt. Nice scoot there from Kirk. You mentioned the 4.46 erra. But Jeff Hoffman has been really good over his last 15 games. 2-0, the 1.38 RA, 13 innings pitched, 15 strikeouts, just eight hits allowed. the 2-2. Another one sent fouled down the third base line. Ricochets off that little wall down there. Do it again at two and two during that streak. During that spin, nine saves. Can’t argue with any of those numbers. He’s really found something. The two- two. Another one ripped foul down the third base side. This one down more into left field again. We will rerack at two and two. He’s got his bobblehead coming up too, right? The uh Thanos inspired bobblehead. I don’t understand that, but I’ll take it. You understand? I’ve never seen that. Well, I understand Thanos and who that is. I don’t understand it with him. I don’t have an answer for that. The two and Andar sends it into right field. Lots of room out there for Addison Barger to scoop it, make the grab. One away. But unfortunately, I am a collector, so I will be collecting them. Oh, you’re a bobblehead collector. Oh, yeah. You have like a little shelf at home. Well, I give all of them to my dad. And he then you’re not a collector. Your dad’s a collector. Well, no. I force it on him, but he does have a pretty good collection. Yeah. And is there a shelf where they’re all displayed or what? They’re all in in a box still. I’ve been bugging it for a couple of years to take the take all of them out of there. I could see a some sort of what do they call those? A curio cabinet in the Laru household. Is that what they’re called? No, they’re just sitting on a on a table in his office. Maxy up now with one out here. Bottom of the ninth. He takes the 10 pitch from Hoffman. Sends it into center field. Backtracking a straw, looking up and watching it. Rick Shay off that big green wall in Sacramento. It’s a solo shot and the A’s cut the lead to 74. And again, you can say that that that was the ballpark that allowed that home run because this is such a hitter friendly ballpark, but that was a fast ball thigh high right down the middle. And Maxy did not miss it. Hammered that thing to center field. 431 ft. Just a good swing on a pitch right down the middle. So the A’s not done yet. They trail by three. It brings up Zack Gellof. He’s one for three tonight. Struck out in his first two at bats against Sherzer. Had a base hit in his last appearance. And looking to get on again right here. Denzel Clark on deck. Then the top of the order for the Ace if they can get there. One out. Bottom of the ninth. 74 Toronto leading. Hoffman comes in with the 10 pitch. It’s fouled off on a four seam fast clocked at 97. Gellof got a piece. It’s one and one. Deep breath from Hoffman. Fires and just missed on that fast ball up high. Now two and one. Same spot on the 2-1. It’s now three in one. Got to throw a strike here. Hoffman, he’s ready to go. Looks in at the sign from Kirk. The leg kick, the delivery on the 3-1 pitch. same spot, but this time Gellof went after it on the fast ball at 97. Swinging a miss. It’s three and two. Well, you can see that that Gellof was sitting dead red there. He knew he was getting a fast ball and he was going to put a big swing on it. The 3-2 pitch up high. Gellof laid off it. Hoffman missed way high and things are still rolling for the Athletics here in the bottom of the ninth. They got a man on trailing 74. Well, obviously that’s not what you want to do in that situation. Jeff Hoffman let out a scream, turned back to center field. You can tell that he’s extremely frustrated obviously with that result. You don’t want to walk the that batter there. You want the Oakland or sorry, the Athletics to be swinging the bat here with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning. Up by three by three runs. Have to forget about that. Go right after Denzel Clark here. I’m gonna I’m not gonna say the word because then it would count as another one, but I’m gonna keep track of this over the over the weekend. We’re now tied 1-1. One-1. All right. 74 Blue Jays leading bottom of the ninth. Man on. And Denzel Clark steps up and the pitch from Hoffman down in the dirt way outside. And a great job by Kirk to get a piece of it to keep it in front and to keep Gellof at first. This one chopped over the head of Wagner at third. It took a nasty hop. It went right up and over Wagner’s head. And going from first to third was Gellof. And the A’s have runners on the corners with just one away. And the tying run comes to the plate. That’s a really tough result for Jeff Hoffman. Made a good pitch. A fast ball inside. Denzel Clark just chops down on that thing. A high hopper over the head of Will Wagner. I don’t know if that would have been a double play, but they surely would have got the gotten the out at second base. Big swing and a miss on the first pitch to Lawrence Butler. The left-handed bat against the righty Hoffman. Bottom of the ninth. One out. Oakland. See, there’s my number two. The A’s. Down by three. I blame you for that one. This is going to be easy money for me. What do you mean? It was 1-1 up until 5 seconds ago. And I only said it because you’ve got it in my brain now. Hoffman takes a glance over at first. Looking at Clark. The 1-1 pitch. Another big cut. Swinging miss from Butler. One and two. Hoffman again glances over at Clark. The one-two pitch swing and a miss. Butler sits down. A huge strike out for Hoffman. Two away. Three really good split fingers for Lawrence Butler there. He really found the release point. Got on top of those pitches. That one right there was one of his best of the season. Started at the bottom of the strike zone and just had that violent action down below. But got to make your pitches here to Brent Rooker. Has 19 home runs on the season. And that one down in the dirt. It skips over the glove of Alejandro Kirk and the run scores to make it 75. Clark goes from first to second. And now Oakland, the A’s with the tying run at the plate. And this thing far from over. Hoffman running into trouble here in this ninth inning. Not the end of the world there. You still have to make your pitches to Rooker, but it does take away the force out at second base, which is probably a big deal for a bouncer up the middle. One pitch, swinging a miss. How did I go the entire game doing it once and now I’ve done it twice in the last 90 seconds? It’s unbelievable. It’s just the like the fall of of Eric Smith has just been It’s like the fall of the Roman Empire. It’s just like it’s it’s sad. I’m just glad I didn’t put money on it. The 1-1. They look down to first and Rooker not happy with the call. I can’t wait to see the side view of this one. There’s no way he swung the bat. He is barking. There is no way he swung the bat. Let’s see the replay. Athletic fans in Sacramento don’t like this call. He did go He’s close, but I think he went It was closer than I thought. That’s for sure. Hoffman now a pitch away from getting out of this thing. A one-two count to Rooker. He almost chased that one down low outside getting the cheers from the Sacramento crowd. It’s a tough situation to be in because you have a big power hitter at the plate. You have the open base at first base, but you also have a big power hitter coming up next and Nick Curts the 2- two up high 97 three and two. And also keep in mind on May 31st, Brent Rooker already has a home run off of Jeff Hoffman. Well, and Curts would represent the winning run if Rooker can get on here. 3-2 pitch with two away. Bottom of the ninth inning and he rips one into left field. It’s picked up there by Lucas. He comes up throwing. No chance to get Clark who comes around to score a head first slide, but the throw didn’t even come into the plate. And it’s 76. The Athletics have cut it to one with a rally here in the ninth inning. And now the winning run steps to the plate in Nick Curts. And again, it’s it’s not the end of the world. Will Wagner did a good job cutting that throw off from Nathan Lucas in left field, keeping Brent Rooker at first base. I think that’s the biggest thing in this situation. You don’t want that guy to get to second base, potentially score on a base hit. But now you have to make your pitches. Pete Walker is out to talk to the infield right now. Everybody is huddled around Jeff Hoffman. If Jeff Hoffman makes a good pitch to Nick Curts here in this situation, the ball game is over. So that’s what you’re concentrating on. if you are Jeff Hoffman. Now, from a strategic standpoint, would you even ever consider putting Curts on? No, because you move the you move the the tying run into scoring position, right? And he’s not he’s not a good enough hitter to be able to do to to do that. Aaron Judge maybe, you know, Juan Sodto, guys like that, but not a Nick Curts. He does have power, but if you make your pitches, you can get you can get him out. Hurts already with a home run in this ball game. He had a two-run shot that got the scoring going for the Athletics back in the sixth inning. Max Schuman has come in as a pinch runner for Brent Rooker. And the first pitch to Curts outside from Hoffman. One, the one pitch in for a strike. The splitter caught the outside edge. It’s one and one. Oakland got a solo shot from Maxy. Then Zack Gellof walked. Denzel Clark got a base hit. Both of those two have come around to score. Those are the three runs in this inning to cut it to 76. The 1-1 pitch is down low. Kirk tried to frame it, but the splitter was definitely well below the zone. It’s now two- one. The Blue Jays led 7 nothing in this game. It’s now 76 in the bottom of the ninth. It’s a 2-1 count. Hoffman fires and Kurts slaps it. Foul goes down the left field side into the stands. It’s now two and two. Deuces wild. Two out, two-2 count. A lot more drama than we were expecting in this game. As I repeat, with the Blue Jays once having a seven nothing lead. Crowd buzzing in Sacramento. Hoffman getting set. The two-2 delivery. And that was real close to a strike, but Junior Valentine does not give it. It misses outside a little bit low. It’s three and two. That was a great take. Tough pitch to take with two strikes. I’m not sure if he was fooled by that pitch or not. The 3-2 This Mertz went after it. The splitter from Hoffman ends the ball game and the Blue Jays hang on for a 76 victory. Well, that’s really all you can ask for. It’s not not how you win them, it’s if you win them. And the Blue Jays win 76. Like you mentioned earlier, they are winning 7 nothing in this ball game. But the A’s slowly chipped their way back into this thing. And Jeff Hoffman made a huge pitch when he had to, getting a tough Nick Curts to swing and miss and end this ball game. The Blue Jays officially come out on top. And the first win of the season for Max Scherzer as Toronto takes this one 76. Toronto with 12 hits tonight leading to those seven runs. Athletics 10 hits, six. It’s a great night for baseball. This matchup features some of the best talent in the game. A lot of power, a lot of marquee names. Here we go. Buckle up, folks. There’s a guy want the bats out. We’re just playing power. And I think Curts took it off the right shoulder as he tried to make the play on the hot shot at first and as the ball ricocheted off the body of Curts, Toronto was able to get two runs in and Lucas ends up at second base. It took a nasty skip off the dirt right by the first base bag and thus then hit Curts badly in that right shoulder and he went down hard. Well, it’s kind of a a rare one in terms of the play of the game, but it ended up being a key play, Chris, because it ended up being a part of a sixrun inning for the Blue Jays as Toronto got one run to start things off with Bo Bashette, who had a leadoff double in the fourth inning. He ended up cashing in and scoring to make it one- nothing. But then that play that we just heard right there was part of the sixth run, sixth run, excuse me, fifth inning for the Blue Jays. And that opened up the sevenrun lead, leading by a touchdown. We thought they were going to run away and hide with this thing, but the athletics kept chipping away and chipping away and made it real interesting until moments ago there in the bottom of the ninth. Well, we thought this game was was a little bit of a laugher for I don’t know about a half an hour when the Blue Jays scored those six runs and then all of a sudden the Athletics came storming back with three in the bottom of the sixth off of Max Scherzer who pitched really well in this ball game. By the way, if you look at this, if you look at the box score, he won six innings, five hits, three earned runs, but I think the box score is a little bit messier than he actually looked. He looked very good in this ball game. Was in was in control for the majority of this ball game. He also struck out eight. He gave up two home runs. And we talked about this before the ball game. This is a this is a a ballpark that is very hitter friendly. You get the ball up in the air and it goes. And we saw that today with with a couple of those home runs, three of them from the athletics. And you had mentioned earlier that that this is a team with a ton of home runs. They have a lot of power. They might not have a lot of wins this season, but they have a lot of power. Nick Curts, of course, striking out to end that ball game. What a what a big play in this season, especially with the Yankees winning. Blue Jays come get back to to two games ahead in the American League East. Nathan Lucas from Sacramento, a two for four night. Had a couple of runs batted in as well. And two runs batted in for Alejandro Kirk. His average sitting at 309. Two hits for Vlatty, two hits for Bo. A solid evening overall for the Blue Jays as they hang on for the 76 victory as they get back on the winning track and they’ll look to carry momentum into tomorrow’s game which will start at the same time just after 10:00 Eastern time obviously just after 7:00 on the West Coast. And you can hear all the action right here on the Sportsnet Radio Network. Thanks to our producer uh Nick Blackmore and technical director Tom Young as we hand it off in mere moments right now for postgame coverage with show Ali and Nick Ashborn. Jay’s talk starts now. Well Nick, just like the Jay’s drew it up, right? It was seven nothing at one point in this game. The A’s just nibbling away at the lead all evening long. They chipped away one or two runs at a time. Jeff Hoffman h little shaky tonight. Perhaps an understatement, but hey, they don’t ask how, they ask how many. And tonight, a 76 win for the Blue Jays. They push their record to 55 and 39 with two more games to go before the All-Star break arrives. They are actually tied with Houston for the second best record in the American League. It was a wild one. Let’s be honest. Like a word that I used to describe it when we were talking in the studio watching this game was more of a hockey word. I guess I said the Jays are having a greasy night. And I think that that is kind of what the offense was, right? They only had two extra base hits all night. They were not putting the ball over the wall the way that the Athletics were. And it was all about this sequence in the fifth inning. And if we kind of rewind to that moment, that is where the game turned. And there’s a lot of moments during that where things could have easily been different for the Blue Jays. Bobette strikes out first and third, one out. It’s a really bad strike out on his part. He reaches for a ball way outside the zone. You’re thinking, “Oh man, here’s an opportunity that’s going by the wayside. Next thing you know, Vlatt’s trying to steal second, which he could have easily been thrown out on, knowing, you know, his ability to steal bases.” Springer calls his own number, breaks for home, should have been gunned out of the plate. That should have been that, but the ball’s bobbled. So then inning keeps going. Addison Barger chops a slow one through the hole. Kind of lucky to get that through. Then he steals a base. A ground ball that hits the pitcher that brings two more runs in. A hit by base. A hit by pitch, sorry. A walk. Another basis loaded single. It’s a kind of a looper. And then the play of the game there, Nathan Lucas. crazy bounce on the infield and off the first baseman to create a a double on paper. Uh, one of your two extra base hits all night to get you up to seven nothing there. There just so many places there where something goes slightly different and the Jays are looking at a two-run night and we’re talking about how they never got the bats going and how poor a showing this is against an athletics team you’re hoping to beat and instead everything conspires for the Blue Jays and somehow they pull out this win in a game where in many ways you could say they were outplayed. Nothing like a nailbiting West Coast win where the game is in doubt in the ninth inning to to wake you up late in the late in the evening.
