Cowboys Receive MORE EVIDENCE Of Offensive Line Breakout Thanks To Tyron Smith + Cut Robert Jones?

[Music] Coming up on the morning edition of the Cowboys report, some good updates from Tyron Smith on both Tyler Gayton and Tyler Smith. And we’ll discuss the idea of Robert Jones, the Cowboys free agent pickup potentially getting cut. Before we dive into that, the most comments on today’s show gets a free entry into our upcoming George Pickins jersey raffle. We promised everyone who hit a certain threshold last time they’d get a shout out and an entry. So, here they are. DJ the sidelines, Steven GX, Kenken, and Amado Nappy. Hope I got that name correct, my friend. You guys all got free entries into the latest George Pickins jerseys raffle. If you already have a George Pickins jersey, we’ll get you a different one anyway. hit the comments section and win that free entry. Right now, let’s go to Tyron Smith, who didn’t talk a lot in his time in Dallas and has talked maybe a little bit more since then. He spoke with Nick Harris about working with both Tyler Gayton and Tyler Smith. And I think it’s some really good stuff coming out of Tyron that should build some confidence, some positivity, some hope for the Cowboys offensive line in 2025. Here’s what Tyron said on Tyler Gayton. He wants to put in work. He just needs a little technique work, which he’s doing right now. I feel like it’s going to be a different type of year for him to slow the game down and get the rookie nerves out. I think he’s building more confidence in his technique because he’s learning a lot more now being a firstrounder the way he is. He is already he already has the expectations which can’t lean too much on that. You have to have it for yourself. Yeah, you have to want to be the best in the league and that has to be your mentality as an offensive lineman. We have to have the mentality of playing in this league as long as possible. I’ve told him before, I want you to be better than how I ever did it. It makes me feel good. And another guy is wanting to strive to be better than me. I want to give Tyler Gayton a lot of credit for what he’s done so far, at least this offseason. He is clearly taking the steps to try to be a better player. He said all the right things and his actions so far have backed that up, too. He’s gotten his body into better shape. He’s eating better. He’s training better. There’s I think a pretty clear plan with Duke Manny as he works with him. He’s working with Tyron Smith, one of the best offensive linemen ever. Shotty and the staff have praised him at different points throughout the offseason for the effort and care he’s taken in being better in 2025. Look, there’s no guarantee this is going to work. It doesn’t always work for players. It’s football’s a hard sport, but so far, haven’t we heard and seen everything we would have wanted to see? The pads haven’t come on yet. We can’t judge it yet. I’m not saying he’s going to become a top five tackle. I don’t think that happens this upcoming season. But so far, the things he can control, he’s controlled. And I want to give him credit for that. Now, if you still have confidence questions in in Gayton, I get it. That’s fair. He was not good enough last year. So, what is your confidence level in Tyler Gayton? Scale it for me from 1 to 10 in the comments of today’s show. Look, I fully expect Tyler Gayton to start this year to be the starter at left tackle and to have some ups and downs. The reality is for Gayton, he is a developmental left tackle. He is not at the same level Zack Martin was that Tyron Smith coming out was even that Tyler Smith was. Frankly, I think what we got from year one out of Gen is a lot more what I thought we’re going to get Tyler Smith. I’m glad that I was wrong on that. The penalties have to be cut down. I think Tyron is white is right. The technique stuff is the big stuff. you have to stop lunging, being a waistbander, dropping that head, that stuff is going to get you to trouble. It’s going to get you with penalties, etc. Those issues are the same on left side and the right side. I don’t think a position would actually change anything on that front. Oh, maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t think that’s the case right now. I want him to take a step forward. I don’t think he’s going to suddenly be at a prime Tyron Smith tackle in year two, but can we have a step forward, develop as a developmental left tackle and feel a lot better than we did after last season at the end of this year? I think that is in the very realistic range of outcomes and it’s what I want for Gayton in 2025. Today’s show is made possible by Chubbies. Tyler is that’s very confusing, but they’re working together just like they did when they were together on the Cowboys. Here’s what Tyron said on Tyler. The next step, this happens. You got three guys named Tyler and a Tyrants with a dog. It’s like, it all just makes no sense. Got to really make sure you’re accurate with who you’re talking about there. The next step for Tyler Smith, Tyron said, is just continuing doing what he’s doing. He has the raw talent, the raw strength. He has it naturally, even for him. Slowing the game down more for himself to hone in more on his technique. He learned early on, you don’t have to muscle everything. You can slow the game down for yourself by honing in on your technique. I think that will make you last long in the league. I think Tyler Smith learned that very early on. For Tyler Smith, the sky is the limit. Tyler’s been a lot better than I thought he was going to be early on coming out of Tulsa. He was a penalty boy and at times he still is. But I think the gu the move to guard has helped fix some of those issues. And I have seen solid growth overall for Tyler Smith with the sheer change of what once was that great wall of Dallas when everyone was in their their prime and Martin and Tyron and Ronald Larry and Fredbeard. It’s now the new focal point is at left guard in Tyler Smith and they’ve invested heavily on the interior of the offline the the entire offensive line in general. that unit has to be good this year or else it makes life tough on the entire offense and thus the defense as well. We’ll have daily Cowboys videos for you each and every single day. So do not miss out. Hit that sub button for me right now. YouTube.comcowboystv. So, Cowboys Wire, Athlon, Fanid, I’m sure some others have all mentioned, suggested, discussed Robert Jones, the free agent pickup at guard as a potential cut candidate. I’ll discuss this. I have I have some issues with it. First up is the contract here. He’s got a $3.75 million capit. One of the first additions by Dallas. I think it was the same night that they picked up Javvante Williams, if I recall correctly. $3.75 million capit. the Cowboys could cut him and save $750,000, which would then go directly to a new player on the 53man roster. So, the net benefits are actually pretty much zero. I’ll go more in depth on this, but what would you do with Robert Jones? K, if you’re going to keep him, C for you you will cut him. Let me know in the comments of today’s show. I don’t believe that Robert Jones is 100% a roster lock. I would be surprised though if the Cowboys cut him. I think there would lot of be would have to be a lot of ifs along the way to get to me to that point where I think it would happen. He was an early free agent target for Dallas and Dallas did more in free agency, but normally the first guy they sign indicates that’s a guy they really wanted. Most of his contract, this is maybe most important, is guaranteed. You could cut him, but you don’t really save much. There’s not much benefits there. Three million bucks in dead money versus saving, you know, under a million is a pretty sizable difference overall. That’s not it’s not great. Look, I would put him eighth overall on the offensive line depth chart. Like, he’s not going to start. He’s behind Brock Hoffman, insert a tackle, but that’s still eighth. And you’re going to carry at least eight offensive linemen. So, for me, he’s very much in that safe category of someone who is going to make the roster and is not going to get cut or anything there. Could a trade happen? Maybe. You know, maybe a team wants some additional offensive line depth. I would wonder if TJ Bass makes some more sense there, but that would benefit you a little bit more from a savings perspective. I I didn’t love Robert Jones at Miami. with Miami. I also don’t think that what he was asked to do for the Dolphins offensive style is going to be the same as what he does with the Cowboys offensive style. And he might be a better fit with this new look unit and the way they run things on on the offensive line. In general, the Cowboys have abnormal depth on the offensive line. And think about this. You got 15 players on your offensive line. Every single player except Dakota Shepley really was either a draft pick or has played real actual NFL snaps in the NFL. That doesn’t really happen. You got a first round pick in Gayton, a first round pick in Tyler Smith, a third round pick top 75 maybe, first round pick in Booker, starting contract in Terrence Steel, Richards was a draft pick, Nathan Thomas, uh, uh, Johnny Quillius, Matt Olesco were all draft picks. Hakee Denai, City Charles, Brock Coffin, Robert Jones, TJ Bass have all started games in the NFL. That is unheard of depth along the offense line, which should make your preseason results very impressive. So, someone could get traded. I just think Robert Jones ends up making this team. [Music]

Today’s Cowboys Report focuses on the offensive line. Two critical starters, Tyler Guyton and Tyler Smith are working with Tyron Smith (you read that right) and that’s GREAT news for the Cowboys as their offensive line looks to improve this season. Plus, host Tom Downey hits the Cowboys rumors on cutting Robert Jones before the 2025 NFL season.

Tyron Smith spoke with Nick Harris about working with Tyler Guyton & Tyler Smith. It’s more evidence of Tyler Guyton doing what he can to make himself better. “He wants to put in the work. He just needs a little technique work which he’s doing right now. I feel like it’s going to be a different type of year for him to slow the game down and get the rookie nerves out. I think he’s building more confidence in his technique because he’s learning a lot more now. Being a first rounder the way he is, he already has the expectations. I’ve told him before, ‘I want you to be better than how I ever did it.’ It makes me feel good that another guy is wanting to strive to be better than me.”

Cowboys news also showed that Tyler Smith is working with his old teammate: “The next step for Tyler Smith is just continuing doing what he’s doing,” Tyron Smith said. “He has the raw talent, the raw strength. He has it naturally. Even for him, slow the game more for himself to hone in more on his technique. He learned early on that you don’t have to muscle everything. You can slow the game down for yourself by honing in on your technique. That will make you last long in this league, and I think Tyler Smith learned that very early on. Cowboys rumors have also suggested that Robert Jones, one of the Cowboys’ first free agent signings this offseason, is a cut candidate. With a 2025 Cap Hit of $3.75 MM and just $750k in possible savings, I don’t think Robert Jones is 100% a roster lock, but a cut would surprise me.

  1. I'll believe Tyler Guyton will stop grabbing high and holding when I see him stop grabbing high and holding..these are habits developed from the first moment he started playing football and are a decade in the making.. Talk is cheap..when that bull across from him starts blowing by him that will be the real test. As for Steele…he plays like a UDFA …which is what he was.

  2. they have to protect the quarter back running game have to better this year defense have to be better also if the Dallas cowboys Go to the Superbowl this year quarter back have to do better
