🔴LIVE 🔴Toronto Blue Jays VS Oakland Athletics/July 12/Mlb Envivo/MLB THE SHOW 25
All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. Athletics, just about ready to roll here. And today’s starter, Luis Severino. But Chris, he hasn’t exactly been stellar here on his home mound. Well, I’ll say this. Every player wants to perform well at their home ballpark in front of their fans, in front of the city, and you know, this guy no different. He wants to be more effective here. So, you know, you look at the numbers, they haven’t been great at home. I’m sure he wants to turn that around, and we’ll see if he’s able to start that in this one. Nathan Lucas leading things off and takes a strike. First pitch 707. That one hammered left field going back and one hops off the wall. Should be extra bases. Safe at second with a leadoff double. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Really good swing right there. You got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. And it’ll be George Springer to step to the plate. Another solid power season. And that drops in for a strike. Oh, one down. Fought off. Foul. No outs. Runner on second. This guy’s seen two change ups in a row. Could be a little vulnerable for a fast ball right here. Check swing on an 02. Appeal to first. He did not go around. Man at second. That misses the zone. And that’s ball two. swinging a ground ball up the middle onto first that takes care of Springer. Let’s take a look at the lineup for the Blue Jays. Singing this righty heavy lineup is a bit unusual against a right-handed pitcher. Yeah, Boo certainly bucks the old conventional wisdom and I’m not sure I see the vision from the manager on this one. You’re not exactly putting your players in the best situation to succeed when you roll out a lineup like this. Maybe they’ve seen something on video that tells them there’s a weakness to exploit. Perhaps that’s it. Smash to the left side. Sends it across to first there for the out. Runner scores from third. Boets. Bobette gets a chance to hit. Get out of here, Blue Jays. That’s a strike going one. Two out. Base is empty to third. slings to first and Bett is retired. Third out. So, it’s one run on one base hit, no errors and no one left on. On to the bottom of the first. It’s the Blue Jays one and the Athletics coming to bat. Back here with my pal Singi and today’s starter, Max Scherzer. What do we have on him? Well, no doubt about it. He’s going to have to put together some consistently good performances in order to bring that erra down. Now, he’s got good stuff. He’s just got to be able to have confidence, trust it, and really go after hitters, not nibble. Trust that his stuff can have late life in miss barrels of bats. Now, the A’s designated hitter, Lawrence Butler. Butler. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. This is a hitter who takes his game to another level playing at night. Bounding ball here. Rolls. Foul. There’s a line drive to left field. That’s a base hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. Back against the wall with two strikes, but found a way. Put a pretty good jolt into that one. Great swing, nice balance and weight transfer, and he got it to drop in out there in the deep part of the field. Now, the number two hitter, Brent Rooker. Let’s go, Brent. Pitch misses inside and that is ball one. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. and a 1-1. There’s the strike. side in the dirt. Butler gets his lead at first. Nobody out and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. struck him out looking at the play. Nick Curts. That’s off the inside corner and that’s ball one. Come on, Mick. Out of line out towards center and he makes the catch. And there are two down. Batting fourth catcher. And time now to check out the A’s lineup. This has been a good productive lineup so far this year. Currently ranking among the better teams in terms of total hits and runs per game. Well, you know, this lineup sees it as very important to put the ball in play. Boo. I mean, this is an age where strikeouts are up so high and guys are swinging and missing going for the fences. But if you can increase that contact rate, you can be a dangerous club. You get more guys on base and then all of a sudden when that big swing comes through, you’re plating more runs. So, we’ll see if this pitcher can get some soft contact. Let the defense work behind him. So, here’s Sherzer pop foul out of play off to the right. Sher to first and he dives back in safely. Let’s go to baby. Flew open a little bit with that front shoulder, but was able to slow his bat down just enough to make contact with that pitch. Keep the at bat alive. And they’ll do it again. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And that’s downstairs and outside. Really good take especially with two strikes outside with a breaking ball. 3-2, two out, runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Ninth pitch of the at bat. do next. That one down the line and it goes just foul. Sherzer gets the punch out. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. The A’s strand one. They trail here one- nothing. And we’re back. Second inning, set to go. And now the right fielder, Addison Barger. Severino, a righty that throws with power. 31 years old. And he was born in the Dominican Republic. There’s a strike. Well, we call that keyhole. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. lined into left center and that should be extra bases into second easily with a leadoff double. He was all over that one. I love the approach he had right there with that pitch. Not trying to do too much, but still looking to drive it. And that’s exactly what he’s able to do into the opposite field gap for the double. runner in scoring position, no outs. And next for Toronto, Alejandro Kirk just missed man at second and there’s a foul ball. Looked like he got a little excited on that fast ball. You’ve got to think to yourself, I want to stay up the middle. That way, if you’re a little bit early, you hit it out of the ballpark. If you’re a little late, opposite field, knock. And Captain Kirk goes down on strikes. Now the third baseman, Will Wagner hit hard on the ground to the right side and foul ball. One out and a runner at second here in the top of the second. Baby, let’s go. Swings and misses. That’s strike two. Rusty Valentine doing the umpiring behind the dish for us. Maybe the best name in the league. Yeah, that’s a solid one. No doubt. I mean, who’s better to ask than you? I kind of wonder if Rusty is his actual name or just a nickname. Yeah, no clue. Fair ball coming home. He’ll score easily. Well done. Drives in the run. just found a way to slap that ball down the third baseline. That’s really excellent back control. And it kind of goes back to all those drills you see hitters do off the tea where it’s placed in different spots. That was just nice. One out, runner at second. Ernie Clement next up for the Blue Jays. Up the middle. Low throw. picked the save. Well, he did all he could at short to try to make an amazing play and almost got it done, but good hustle down the line and that’s an earned infield hit. Miles Straw next up for the Blue Jays. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate. Rudder takes off and that one fouled off in the dirt. He’s in there with two on and one out. You’re just hoping you can get a double play ball to get yourself out of the inning. But now you’ve really got some work to do. Need a big strike out here. two on, one out. And that’s fouled off. Swings through that one. It’s a strikeout. Well, I love to see guys compete and I know he’s frustrated that he wasn’t able to do anything with that pitch. You see it so well, but you have to respect the upper 90s velocity. Man, it is hard to catch up to. Back to the top of the lineup and here is Nathan Lucas. Doubled his first time up and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. That one fouled off. Two on, two outs. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. Well, you put good velocity in the head of the hitter. He’s got to get it ready early and then change speeds. Keep him off balance. That’s the goal. Inside and it hit him. And now the bases are loaded. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. So they’re all loaded up and the batter is George Springer. 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at bat. And that’s a little bit high. One and0. And another ball. Pressures on right here. Two count. Base is loaded. You don’t want to fall to a three ball count and then walk in or on. He’s got to challenge the hitter right here. Here comes the pitch. That’s a ball. went with the sweeper. Look, in situations like these, the air can get really thin up there at the plate. Got to find a way to breathe and slow everything down. Fast for a strike that crosses the plate. And now they’re just one strike away from getting out of this mess. That one is absolutely belted. Gone. Grand slam. Oh my. He rocketed that one out of here. His 17th of the year. It’s 6 nothing. The count was full, but he was ready to swing it. Well, a great job here of staying within himself. You know that if you get a knock, you’re going to drive in a couple. So, stay focused on that. Well, he does more than just a knock. Hits the grand slam to drive in four. Really good job at the plate. Manager out of the dugout now. And it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Luis Severino done for the night. And this is one he’d like to forget. back with a new arm after this. Number 50 gets handed the rock out of the pen. This is his fifth appearance of the year. Here’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. And first offering is fouled off. And that one missing low. One ball, two strike. Missed with a change up. It’s two and two. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow left field and it drops in and that extends the inning. Well, I’m not saying that play was easy, but it was harder than it needed to be thanks to the bad jump. Those small moments can be costly. Besette up to the dish. First time up, he grounded to third. That one’s in there. One and one. Guerrero off of first with two away. Now one and one. One ball, one strike. Next offering popped in the air right field. Rooker pulls it down and that’s the third out. Take another look at the Toronto Grand Slam. The lead has exploded to a half dozen. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. And welcome back to the ballpark. We head to the bottom of the second. Now the left fielder Tyler Soder Stroke clearly down in this ball game and you can’t look at the deficit and try to get it all back in one swing. It’s got to come one at bat at a time and even shrink it down smaller pitch to pitch. Make that guy on the mound work to get you out. Hit hard but foul off to the left. ripped but a curls foul. Look out. That ball was smoked. Man, I am so relieved that they have this netting down the line just to ensure safety for the fans. Last thing, as a player, you want to look up and see a fan get hit. Next offering upstairs. That one missed. That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. Works the walk. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that wall. So man aboard, Miguel Anduhar up next for the A’s. Chris baseball today. So many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers. But this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. Let’s go. Three to go, baby. Let’s go. That’s out to center field. Straw getting an angle on it. Pulls it in and there’s one away. Batting seven. The short stop. Max. Maxy the next to hit. Let’s go. That is upstairs for ball one. Next offering is fouled back. Sherzer deals. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. And that’s downstairs. Two and two. Man at first, one away. Next pitch is outside. Sherzer gets the punch out and he’s registered three Ks in this one. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. Now it’s the second baseman, Zack Gellof. Ball one there. gets under and pops it up. Wagner, makes the grab and the inning is over. onto the third inning. Now it’s the right fielder Addison Barker. And a strike. Well, these Blue Jays doing a good job of putting the ball into play, and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side. And here’s a stat for you, Boo. They’re making contact with more than 85% of the pitches that they’re swinging at. It’s pretty special stuff. Not so good if you’re out there on the mound. Sodrom makes the grab. One away. Now batting catcher Alejandro Kirk. And now for the Jays, Alejandro Kirk. It’s amazing. We get a chance to talk to a lot of opposing managers. This guy scares managers on the other team as much as anyone. And he gets to fly beneath the radar with the other more recognizable names in this lineup. Next offering is in for a strike. One out. Base is empty. The next pitch misses and it’s two and one. That’s a bullet, but it goes foul. Fouls that off to the left and we’ll do it again. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. The two-2 fouled off and they’ll do it again. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. That one way inside. Straighten him up a little bit. Fights it off. He’ll see another line drive and that should be extra bases. Now he’ll turn for second and he’ll pull in there with a standup double. But when you see that many pitches in an at bat, your chances of succeeding go up. And right there we see the result. One out, runner at second. Next to hit, Will Wagner one for one with a double and a run scored. That clips the corner. Kirk the runner at second with one away. One ball, one strike. So a foul ball makes it one and two. bring him home. Swing and a miss and he chases that one in the dirt. Gets the out. Two down after the strikeout. Nice job behind the plate there. Up next for the Blue Jays. So digging in, Ernie Clemens reached on an infield single his first time. Let’s go green, baby. Let’s go. Way high. Swing and a miss. And the count one at one. It might be time to choke up a little bit. Get that front foot down early. Maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. Gellof. throws to first. That’s the third out. A double in the inning, but they leave him stranded. We head now to the home half of inning number three. It’s the Blue Jays six and the A’s nothing. Set for the bottom of the third. And here’s the rookie center fielder, Denzel Clark. Clark Max Scherzer back to work right through there for a strike. This is one of those times when you want to be aggressive. Go ahead and pitch to contact. Let the defense work behind you. You’ve got a nice comfortable lead. Don’t try to be too fine. Next offering in there for a strike and it’s nothing and two. That one ripped right center field. It falls in and that’s a knock. Had a good start to the inning. Now batting. So the batting order turns over. Now it’s the DH. Lawrence Butler one for one. He led off the bottom of the first with a single and it’s fouled away. That one pushed to the left and fouled. Ruer at first with no outs here. Got him. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Oh, just a beautiful fast ball on the inside corner for that backwards K right there. I think the hitter saw it all the way coming from that opposite arm angle. So, I got to think he was looking away and just got locked up by the hard stuff boring in on his hands. And now Brent Rooker struck out looking at his first at bat. And that one ripped into right. Quick throw back in. Lead runner holds it second with one gone. Number 16 Nick Curts up next for the A’s. He’s 0 for one. And that’s in for a strike. And a base hit into right center field. Throw back in. holds the runner at third. Base is now loaded. Only one away. Shay Langalers up next for the A’s struck out swinging his first time. And that’s in for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Clark on third. Rooker at second. Curts at first. One gone. Foul ball there. All right, here we go. that misses. One and two count. Well, Chris, through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. Next offering is outside. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now. Doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. All loaded up. here in the last half of the third. Still two and two after the foul ball. Oh, he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit, try to move it around, create just a little bit of illusion at the end. Sherzer gets the punch out. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strike out. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. Boo gets talked about a lot, but a good high fast ball in a two strike situation, it’s just become such a problem for hitters in more recent years. I mean, with all of the emphasis by pitchers on developing that spin rate, having a good grip on the baseball, those high fast balls, they kind of look like to the hitter that they’re rising, even though they’re not, but they’re not decreasing in velocity and spin rate, so very difficult to get the barrel on it. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. Base is loaded. Two down. Smoked on the ground. A second. They get the force out to escape a bases loaded jam. Unscathed. A’s threatened but leave them loaded. They still find themselves down six zip. And we’re back. Stepping in Miles Straw. Miles Straw and that drops in for a strike. Puts it in the air out towards left center. Sodstrom brings it in with a nice running grab. Every day during batting practice, these outfielders get about 10 minutes of balls in the gaps. They practice this and when the game comes, they make the play perfectly. Lucas stands in here, takes ball one low, base is empty, one away. Top half of inning number four. And a base hit right there. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. Here’s George Springer. He’s already homered here in this one. Close but called a ball. And that’s ball one. Come on, turn the double hit on the ground. Might be two. Off balance feed. There’s one to first. Not in time. Great effort there. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. So up next, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Ripped on a line, drops into the glove, and that is that. Blue Jays held in check, but they’re on top by a count of six to nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Here’s the third baseman, Miguel Anduhar. Miguel and Duhar. Max Scherzer goes to work. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. Ball one. I can’t play around with him here. It’s a six-run lead at this point. Got to attack hitters even if you give up a solo shot. There’s a swing and a drive and that’s going to bang against the wall. Takes the turn. He’s digging for second to second. Pulls him off the bag. Nice line drive to the pull side. Met it out front but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield. Next up for the A’s, Maxy struck out swinging his first time. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. Ball one. just missed. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. And that one hammered. That’s back there. That one is gone. He flexes his power with that swing. Home run number 10 on the year. It’s 6-2. That was blasted. Absolutely. No doubt off the bat. When you’re working with this kind of velocity, so critical that you move the ball around, work quickly, and make sure that you keep that hitter off balance. Clearly not fooled by the location or the velocity. He was all over that fast. So digging in Zack Gellof. First time up was a pop out. Line drive base hit. Now batting center fielder Denzel. So a man at first and now the center fielder Denzel Clark one for one with a single so far. Pitch misses and it’s one and0. You know these A’s doing a great job Boo of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. They’re doing a good job of working the pitch count and they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well. swings and misses and it’s one and one. Still relatively early, but with a pair of runs already on the board, the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set him up to do more damage later in this game. Nobody out. Runner at first. That one pushed foul. Three to go, baby. Let’s go. In the dirt. Blocked. Gellof on at first. Nobody out. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Now batting Lawrence Butler up next for the A’s. One for two. Butler and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Still only one out here in the inning. And ball one in the air out towards right center. Barger on the move to the alley. Two away. Come on now. Now batting right fielder Brent Rooker. Now the number two hitter Brent Rooker a former first round pick and he’s really turned into a nice everyday player. That’s off the mark and that is ball one. That one is upstairs. Well, they gave up the home run earlier in this inning. Not pitching as aggressively here. Check swing called strike and it’s three and one. Sher to first and he’s back in safely. Two outs and that one fouled off. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. This one high in the air to left center. Lucas sizes this one up and makes the grab. And that is that. The A’s with a two-run blast. It’s now 62. You’re dialed into the show. All set for the start of the inning. And the batter will be the shortstop. Bo Bett Bett 27 years old and he was a second round pick back in 2016. Movement in the bullpen. JP Sears up and throwing. Lopez getting cranked up as well. And a foul ball. hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. Well, that high forcing fast ball, it’s become such a staple as a strikeout pitch over the years. And what’s so tough as a hitter is that you see it extremely well. The problem is the velocity and spin rate just happens to jump by you. You expand your zone, you don’t stay tall on the backside, and you’re really not even able to make contact. If you do, many times it’s a popup. Barger in the box again takes a strike. Got the bat going too soon at strike two. That one almost got him. Fouled off the plate. I think they’ll do it again. One down, base is empty. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Now batting Alejandro Kirk next up for the Blue Jays. Really nice double last time after a long battle at the plate. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. felt impressed that he went right after him on that first pitch. That’s the key. Try to get ahead in the count and you can play around a little bit more as the at bat expands. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Got him looking and he strikes out the side of the fifth. Impeccable command in that one. Three batters, three strikeouts. That’s electric stuff out there on the mound. So, out of the paint comes the right-hander Robinson Pena. And he’s got a nice lead to work with. So he should come in throwing strikes, attacking these hitters. Nick Curts digs in now. First baseman number 16. That pitch in for a strike. Going on. Activity in the bullpen. Chad Green, the veteran right-hander, appears to be loosening up. Yo, one fast ball on the inside corner for a strike. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. Ah, that hit him. And the leadoff man is aboard to start the inning. So, a substitution needed at first because of the injury. Entering is the pinch runner, Gio Urchella. Man at first. And now here’s the A’s catcher, Shay Langalers, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. This is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively. Fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate. Good game caller, good at framing, but it’s that big arm that really stands out. And that is out of play. When you got a catcher like this guy with a big arm like that behind the plate, it really shuts down the running game and he can’t come up with it. Gets off a throw over to Bette and he’ll just get the one. Well, that was clearly a double play ball, but the bobble unfortunately prevented him from being able to get two, but a good job to stay with it and make sure you got at least one. Tyler Soderstrom up next for the A’s. He’s 0 for one. go now. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Well, I’ll say this as a former position player and base steeler. When you come into a game and you’ve got a guy like this behind the dish with a big arm, you really have to change your approach. Can’t try to steal cuz you’ll get thrown out. Maybe get a little bigger lead, be aggressive on the secondary, but this type of guy shuts the running game down. That one to first but it kicks foul in the dirt but kept close to second but way too late. Safe there. Langeliers into scoring position on the wild pitch and there goes the double play possibility. You know, sometimes it takes a reliever a little time to get comfortable with the mound out there, especially when they come in trying to be nasty with every pitch they throw. Not exactly what they were looking for when they called him in, though. We’ll see if he can settle down. Langelers, the runner at second with one away. Next offering upstairs. up the middle. Bette in plenty of time to first and they got him. Now batting third base Miguel. Here’s Miguel and Duhar. Drove it off the wall last time. Just missed out on a home run. to go, baby. Let’s go. At 96, that pitch is in for a strike. There it was. Oh. Oh, here it is. Hit it. He gets a take. Gets ahead in the count. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. Well, you got the hitter already chasing that nasty slider. If you’re on the mound, you just want to expand the zone right now. Get a swing and miss and get through this at bat. Two outs and one in scoring position on the ground to third. Fires over to Guerrero. That ends the frame. The A’s strand one. They still trail it here. It’s six-2. And we’re back. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six. Now the third baseman, Will Wagner. Swing and a ground ball towards first but foul. He swings and fouls one off. Foul ball still 0 and two make it four strikeouts in a row. Just cruising along. Here’s the second base, Ernie Clemen. Ernie Clemen. Let’s go, baby. Let’s go. And first offering is fouled off. One down. Base is empty. Way inside. And that hit him. So up next for Toronto, Miles Straw for two in this one. to the right side and that one handled. Whips it to first on the run. Nicely done for the Owl. Good fade and sinking action of that change up. Got that hitter to roll over. Nathan Lucas getting ready to hit. Nathan Lucas. And there’s a fly ball deep right field. That’s down. One hops off the wall. The run comes in from second and the lead is up to five. Well, that started and ended pretty quickly. No messing around right there. That’s a good sound coming off the bat, man. And as he connected out front, ripped it into the outfield. That’s one of those swings where you just don’t even feel the ball hit the barrel. That’s a pure stroke. Now that and now to the plate. Here’s the Toronto DH George Springer. We can’t forget what he did back in the second. Singing. That was a big swing in this one. Yeah, grand slam. Boo. Huge moment early on in this one that set him up pretty nicely. That one ripped. Clark makes the catch and that is that. The Jays push across a run on this double. It’s now a 72 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show and welcome back to the ballpark. Now it’s the shortstop. Maxy Maxy Pena back to work and a strike on the outside edge. Base hit. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Now it’s the second baseman, Zack Gellof. Hard hit right side off balance feed. There’s one throw to first and it pulls him off the bag. Well, they had the chance of turning two right there, but I don’t think he got a good grip on the ball as he tried to transfer from glove to throwing hand. They say you can’t assume a double play. I beg to differ at the big league level, but it’s going to be ruled as a fieldielder’s choice. Next up for the A’s, Denzel Clark. Fast ball is outside. And there’s a ball. Pitch misses there and that’s ball three. Well, I would expect in this three-0 count, you’re taking all the way. See if he’ll walk you. Next offering is in for a strike. And a foul ball. Look out. That ball was smoked. Man, I am so relieved that they have this netting down the line just ensures safety for the fans. Last thing is a player you want to look up and see a fan get hit. And ball four, two aboard. Now batting. So the lineup flips over now. Here’s the leadoff hitter for the A’s. Lawrence Butler one for three. Right through there for a strike. There it was. A high velocity fast in the zone. And I think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter. He’s got good stuff. Pitch inside the zone and trust it. That’s a strike. 0 and two. Well, he’s gotten ahead with two pitches down in the zone. He has plenty of options right here. He can go up. He can go away. He can add velocity. He can subtract. Spoils the two strike pitch. And he’ll see another baby. Let’s go. Two on, one out. One and two in the dirt on the ground right side and that’s just foul. Stays alive. Hit in the air. Centerfield. Straw has a beat on it. Puts it away for the out. Two down. Now batting right fielder Rucker. So first and second with two outs. And now the right fielder Brent Rooker. First pitch misses. One count. Look for him to be aggressive here. You got some runners on base. An opportunity to catch a mistake and put some runs up on the board. And there’s a foul ball. Yeah, that’s fouled off. That one misses. Two balls, two strikes. Well, he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here, too. Two. He’s already seen the curve ball a couple of times in this at bat, so might have it timed up and ready for it. And it remains two and two. First and second, two down here in the bottom of the six. And that one a little below the knees. And the count is filled up. Swinging a ball driven out to center. That’s back. That one is gone. A massive home run. Home run number 20 on the year. It’s 75. Singy. That’s his 99th career homer. Well, he’s probably already thinking about the next one. And don’t want to think too hard because you’ll start to struggle. 100 is a really nice number to get to though. Knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. Here comes the manager out of the Blue Jays dugout and he will make a move to the pen. Robinson Pena gives way two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout and we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Yeah, baby. So, they turn things over to the righty Chad Green. Still a lot of game left and this game could go either way. So, this is a big opportunity for him to get some important outs and try to help carry this lead into the later innings. So, two away with nobody on. Here’s Gioella. came into the game as a pinch runner. This is his first trip to the plate in this one. That one the other way. Makes the catch and over. A’s draw closer on this homer. It’s now 75. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound. Elvis Alvarado just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. So digging in, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. ball one there. One and0. The next offering misses and that’s ball two. You get to this part of the order. Yeah, there’s some pop there, but more likely there are some base hits. So, very important to be patient. Let the pitcher walk you if you will. That one catches the corner for a strike. Swang and a highf fly ball. Well struck left field. That’s back there and out of here. His 13th home run of the season and they add to their lead. It’s 85. Man, he looks like his dad out there hitting home runs. That’s exactly the pitch he was looking for. Crushes it and hits it out of the ballpark. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Bobette three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. Sliced down the right side. Oh, he doesn’t get the call and a count even one and one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. JP Sears, the left-handed reliever, appears to be getting loose. Lopez warming up as well. One and two here. Come back to the mound. Over to first. That’s the first out in the top of the seventh. Now batting rightieler Addison Barger. Addison Barger now at the plate. inside. And that’s ball one. One ball. No strike. And that’s in for a strike. One out. Base is empty and a run in here in the top half of inning number seven. So now one and two. So hard to touch being at the top of the zone. 99, 98, even 97 as pitchers do such a good job of teasing that part of the zone. Just elevating a little bit. It looks good because you see it for a good while as a hitter. Looks juicy and by the time you swing it’s almost in the catcher’s mid. And that one lifted in the air center field. Clark settles under it and there’s two away. Now batting catcher Alejandro Kirk. Two outs. Base is empty. And now the catcher comes up to hit Alejandro Kirk. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. That two seam fast ball is usually coupled with a slider away. And when a hitter’s conscious of the pitch in, it’s hard for him to cover middle away. And that’s where a pitcher can really finish off that batter. Swing. Get a ball popped up. Gellof makes the play and that is that. Toronto picks up one on this homer. It’s now an 85 ball game. Major League Baseball is on the show. Bottom of the seventh. And now here’s the A’s catcher, Shay Langalers. Langalers. Swinging a foul out of play. And the slider just misses. Swinging a drive deep right field and that gets down in the corner. Makes the turn and heads for second. Not in time. That’s a leadoff double. put a very nice swing on that pitch right there. Got one to drive and just kept it fair down that right field line and into the corner. And it’s almost impossible to track those down as an outfielder. Now that sets up a huge atbat in this ball game. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Next up for the A’s, Tyler Soderstrom in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. If you’re going to get something going, this is the time to do it. You get the leadoff man on. Everybody’s got to look over the shoulder and say, “I’m just going to keep the line moving.” Don’t try to do too much. Man at second. Swinging a foul straight back. And now one and two. One and two. Fast ball is outside. The 2-2. And that one upstairs. Langaliers at second with nobody out. Fouls it back with two strikes and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. And that’s too high. Ball four. And that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. Oh, a great back and forth in that at bat. He had to lay off some really close pitches. And somehow Boogie found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there. I’ll tell you right now, I couldn’t have done it. Late swing fouled off. The tying run at the plate. Hard ground ball for a base knock. Headed for the plate. Here comes the throw. Safe. It’s eight to six. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch runs scoring at bat. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. And now it’s going to be Maxy. He’s already homered in this game. Rolled softly, but that goes foul. The one and that one upstairs. Ball one. This one in the air center field. Straw has a beat on it. Brings it in. Grounder tags at second and the throws off line. Safe at third. Good read there at second base to move up to third. Now it’s a lot easier to get that run in with one away. Here comes the skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Chad Green won’t go any further tonight. And the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Now to the bullpen for the Jays, Braden Fisher. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. So up next, Zack Gellof. This is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation. Yeah, Boo. Not sure what the numbers say, but clearly an at bat that could change the course of this game dramatically. And that’s off the inside edge. And that’s ball one. In this situation, the batter’s got to know what the pitcher is trying to do to him. And that’s trying to get him to hit the ball on the ground, get two for one. You got to look for something up in the zone. At worst case scenario, you deliver the sacrifice fly. I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield and delivers outside. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. And a swing and a miss. Huge strike out there. Wow. Just great bite to that slider. Broke hard out of the zone and he just couldn’t hold up the swing. You know, as a hitter, that pitch is really hard to take and there’s just not much you can do with it. You know that, but you don’t want to get rung up by the umpire. Denzel Clark the next to hit. Come on. That’s in for a strike with the go-ahead run at the plate here in the bottom of the seventh. And a big swing and a miss. More and more guys are looking to slug regardless of the count and this situation will keep a close eye on his approach. Toronto’s bullpen with some action. Jeff Hoffman, the hardthrowing righty, is up and loosening. Runners on first and third. Two away. Off the mark there and the count is even. Two and two. And a breaking ball misses outside. This is a really good feeling for a hitter at this point in the ball game. You know that they don’t want to walk you. So, you’re going to get a pitch to hit. You just better not miss it. Lawrence Butler in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. And they’re all loaded up. That’s a tough one to swallow right there. If you’re on the mound, you’re ahead in the count 02 and you just couldn’t find a way to put him away. It’s going to be frustrating if that one comes back to bite him. Line drive and this might be trouble. One runs in now. A second crosses the plate. save. He beats it and it’s 98. Such great concentration. Everybody on their feet knowing that you can come through with a good swing. And there he doesn’t try to do too much. So runner at second, two, he gets the intentional walk here. And now a force at any base with two gone. Now batting first. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Braden Fiser will depart and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. A new arm into the game, the righty Tommy N. And he comes on here for the first time this season. And I’m sure there’s some nerves involved in that. So, we’ll see how he settles in. Gioella to the plate. Really thriving with the bat this season here at home. Hey, you got this. You got this. Well, it might be a night game, but it’s pretty hot out there. And I don’t have to tell you, partner, you’re sweating pretty good over there. Makes this long inning that he’s grinding through out there a little extra taxi. Two on, two outs outside. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. A’s leading by a run. The 20 is in for a strike right through there for a strike. swanging a high-fly ball in the air left field. That’s back out of here. So, he goes yard to left. It’s 128. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. They’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. For a pitcher, the odds are in your favor if you keep that breaking ball down. That time he got punished for it. Hitter just did a really good job of staying within himself and getting the barrel to the baseball. So, two down and next will be the cleanup hitter, Shay Langelers. One for four with a double. And there’s a rocket into the outfield. Zoe gets on base and keeps it going. Now batting left fieldielder. Next up for the A’s, Tyler Soderstrom. Sodro throw to first. Langelers back on a dive. in there for strike one. Swag a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. Two outs. Back foot slider struck him out, but they take the lead on a huge sevenr run outburst. Eighth inning coming up. It’s the A’s 12 and the Blue Jays eight. Now pitching. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Jacob Lopez and they felt it was time to bring on a left-handed reliever from the pin with the lefty hitter coming up. I think it’s a good move. I know I never liked when opposing teams did that to me. Will Wagner bring them home. Foul ball. Let’s go. That one in the dirt and the count is one and one. fought off foul. Swing and a miss and he is down on strikes for the third straight at bat. Came inside with that two strike fast ball nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate. couldn’t get around on it and catch it out front. Many times if you do, it’s a foul ball. And you know, a lot of pitchers, they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter. And when they’ve got him up against the ropes, got to figure out a way to put him away. Did a nice job right there. The Jays down by four and we’re in the top of the eighth. That one hit to right and that’s a fair ball around first heading for two in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. You know, I was watching his rounds during batting practice today. So impressed with his ability to let the ball travel, go back up the middle and the other way. Sometimes when you step in the box during the game, you get a little anxious and you get away from that. But so far, I’ve seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation. And next for Toronto, Miles Straw. Fast ball for a strike. That one missed. Just missed with that back door breaking ball. If he gets a swing and miss or called strike, 02 count. Instead, it’s 1-1. Look for him to go back to that pitch later in this at bat. Man at second. In there for a strike at the bottom of the zone. Backed off the plate that time. Handful. Foul ball and it remains a full cow. Clement leads off second with one gone in the inning. And ball four, two aboard. Well, he took his chance at getting him to chase right there, but with first base open, walk not a bad thing. He set up a double play opportunity if he can induce a ground ball. Two on, one out. Now here’s the leadoff man for the Blue Jays, Nathan Lucas. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Maybe losing command a little bit after the walk. Next pitch, not even close. One out, runners at first and second. There’s the strike. Action in the pen down there. Mason Miller, the closer, is getting ready and perhaps looking at a long save opportunity here. Sterner also getting ready. Two on, one out. Bounding ball here. Rolls. Foul. Hard on the ground to first, one at second, double play. What a twin killing to end the inning. So no runs here on a base hit. No errors and one left. Home half of inning number eight. Straight ahead. It’s the A’s 12 and the Blue Jays eight. Now pitching for back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Justin Bul. This softball has been really good against left-handed hitters. Miguel Anduhar digs in now. Third base. Miguel, baby. Let’s go. That’s in there. Strike one. BR a 6-2 southpaw. He throws a slerve, a sinker, and occasionally uses a cutter. Go to gold on the ground right side and it goes just foul. the other way and out number one on the grab. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. I know it didn’t produce a hit, but he made solid contact and that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. And the batter will be the shortstop, Maxy. Do it again. And first offering is fouled off and the pitch is outside. Ball one. Movement in the Blue Jays bullpen. Yariel Rodriguez, the young right-hander up and throwing. Come on. The 1-1 is fouled off. A short stop. Takes a ball. Let’s go, baby. Fly ball to right and it drops in now. Batting second base. Runner on at first with one gone. Next up for the A’s, Zack Gellof. And a strike on the outside corner and it’s 0 and one. Come on, let’s keep it going. This to third. Fair ball. Muny around second on his way to third. Coming home. He will score. Picks himself up an RBI. Got the top of the ball a little bit, but not much. That was hit pretty hard through the infield. So, I think he’ll be happy with that swing. Definitely generated some good bat speed. Denzel Clark up next for the A’s. Swinging a ground ball and foul ball. That’s towards center. Straw has a beat on it. puts it away for the out and there’s two away. Now batting designated hitter Lawrence Butler. And now the DH Lawrence Butler drove in three last time off. And another chance to put something on the board here. That’s a ball. Squirts away a little bit. That one finds the zone and it’s a ball and a strike. That breaking ball drops in for a strike. One and two outside with a breaking ball. The A’s looking to add another. Hot shot to third. And that’ll keep more runs from coming in. Inning over. A’s get one on the RBI double. Last chance coming up for the Blue Jays. And we’re back. We go to the ninth. Now it’s the Toronto designated hitter, George Springer. Lopez back to work. And that one is inside ball one. The A’s bullpen has some movement. JP Sears, the left-hander, up and throwing. Next offering misses and the count is 2 and 0. Foul ball there. foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming Try to get him to chase on the change up that time. Ground ball right side and it stays fair around first and hustling for second. And he’s there with a leadoff double. Love how he became a really tough out with two strikes right there. I don’t know how he was able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it. That pitch was inside and he let it get really deep. So, pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it. Runner in scoring position, no outs. And now for the Jays, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. And a popup right side. Foul territory. Catcher tosses the mask. Settles under it. He’s there. He’s got it. And there’s one down. Now batting shortstop Bo Bett. And now the shorts stop. Bo Bett 0 for four. Two ground outs, a fly out, and a strikeout. line drive and that’s a fair ball. Here comes Springer around third. He’ll score. Went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. And now the right fielder Addison Barger. Blind drive. That’s a base hit out of the left center field coming home. He’ll score easily and it’s an RBI single. It’s 13-10. Well, that gets him a little closer in this one. Pretty much a model swing on that one as he ripped it into the opposite field gap. And I’m sure he’s going to be watching that one back on video because that’s the kind of swing you want to bottle. So many positives that led to that knock. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Jacob Lopez out of the game. It’s a three-run game, and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. Mason Miller comes out trying to close it out, but I can’t imagine any save is an easy one. You’re holding a small lead on the scoreboard, and you know those hitters are going to give you the best at bats they can. So, it’s always high stress. Let’s see what he’s got here to try and close it out. One down. Alejandro Kirk next up for the Blue Jays. That one in triple digits. Hey partner, how’s your scorecard looking right now? Little dicey. Kind of hieroglyphics style at the moment. You know what it’s like singing remember our trip to London Yankees and Red Sox in 2019. I think there were there 50 runs scored in the two games combined. My scorecard was ugly for that series. Yeah, pretty ridiculous. And you use like five different colors of pens. So like it’s just a mosaic over there. Yeah. I mean I I know you’re always judging the different pens that you know I got the skinny scoring pen and then I have the red and then the black and then I got a highlighter. So there is a lot going on. Got him looking for the strikeout. Blue Jays have just one out left here. Well, he’s going to have some thinking to do when he leaves the ballpark after this one. That was his third strike out and this one looking obviously. So, he’s been a little overmatched. He’s got to find a way just to be more competitive up there at the plate. Wagner in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Line drive, base hit. They stop the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. So up next for Toronto, Ernie Clement. swaying and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field. Runner around third. He’ll score and it’s an RBI single and it’s now a two-run game. His confidence level is so high. Really nice job of coming through in a big spot. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground balls. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. Now, a huge at bat in this game coming up. Miles Straw next up for the Blue Jays. 0 for three in this one. That’s off the mark. Ball one. One ball strike. And another ball. And a strike right through there. That one in triple digits. Oh, so many hard throwing relievers in the game these days. You would think that hitters have made the adjustment, but I don’t know if you ever get used to it. Just pumping gas out of the bullpen. So hard to play catchup. Miller is just one strike away. Still two and two after the foul ball. Yeah, that’s too high. Wow. Triple digits on the gun. I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past, but it’s still impressive to watch. Two on, two outs. Battling here as he fouls it away. Got him. And that’s the ball game. Nice work out of the bullpin for that first MLB win. Boog. They turned to him when they didn’t have the lead. He kept things steady and he’s rewarded with the W. The 1311 final score here today. The A’s hang on to win it. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show, I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon.
