Heat. Heat. Heat. Hey, Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Hey, hey, hey. Heat. Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. anything cuz I truly don’t know where I would be and what I would do had I not had the opportunity to bounce that ball. Craig Anthony with an open three. And doing television, working at NBA TV, it literally takes you back to being a rookie again where it’s new, it’s fun, it’s fresh, and it’s exciting. Coverage of day two out in Vegas continues as we welcome you back to the NBA 2K 26 summer league just off the strip on the campus of UNLV inside the pavilion where fans have been filing in. Nick fans are here excited for what was and what could be this upcoming season. Today, a rematch in name of course of the first round highly contested series between the Detroit Pistons and the New York Knicks with the running rebel himself, Greg Anthony. I’m Jared Greenberg. We’ll check in with Stephanie Ready in just a moment. Big story this off season, one of the biggest stunners. Knicks go to game seven of the Eastern Conference Finals. Then they fire their head coach Tom Thibido who led them to their most successful run in 25 years. They bring in Mike Brown. So, it’s a changing of the guard here for the New York team. It it is. And listen, Tom Thibido did a terrific job getting them to a conference finals. And and sometimes you just need a different voice, a different set of eyes. And I think that’s what the front office was thinking when they made the move, fortunate to get a guy like Mike Brown who has had tremendous success, has coached in the finals, been a part of a championship team, and so I think he brings that experience to an experienced group with the New York Knicks. I just realized, by the way, you’re using the cushion. Not I’m not this short, I promise. And he’s not that tall. I I promise you that. I mean, compared to you, I actually am. Don’t worry. Some of the guys we’re going to be looking at in this game here, one of them is is a center that adds some depth behind Carl Anthony Towns and and and uh and what they have there in New York. Ariel Hakde is a guy that dealt with some injuries, but he certainly could give them some minutes next year. Yeah, 23 years old, a lot of athleticism and upside and and you’re right, they’re they may still be in a position where they’re looking to tweak their roster. And a guy that they drafted in the first round a year ago, Peekham Tier, he was named to FIA Europe’s 20 under 20 list. Guy that doesn’t turn 20 until later this month. Has an opportunity here to show Leon Rose and and and Mike Brown what he has. Yeah. And the other aspect of that is too with Mike Brown coming on board, how much different will the Knicks look philosophically, right, from an offensive and a defensive standpoint? Ron Holland got a ton of playing time as a rookie. Pardon me. Uh this is Chaz Laneir. We’ll get to Ron Holland in just a moment, but Chaz Lir got a lot uh of time in Tennessee and now picked 37th overall by Detroit. a guy that certainly can light it up from the outside. Yeah. Shooting. And that’s that’s always a premium if you think about a Detroit Pistons team. A tremendous turnaround last season. And they had to revamp their roster a little bit as well. And you see Holland there, who I love. This guy is an attacker defensively and a tone setter. Really helped change the culture of the Pistons. There is Ron Holland who was selected fifth overall last year. Just turned 20 years old a couple of days ago. Played in 81 of the 82 games last year for Detroit. Well, we’re going to see today how much he is taking serious the green light that he’s going to have here in Summer League. While he was impressive during his rookie campaign, they need him to be a better shooter. And that’s going to be the emphasis today, he shot just 24% on three-point shots last year. Well, I in an ideal world, you want him to be one of those three and D guys, but the one thing I will say in his defense is I think he’s got a chance to be an incredibly elite defender. One such that he’s so good, it’s just hard to keep him off the floor. And we saw him string those kinds of games together last season. Knicks will be in the blue uniforms. Pistons will be in the white jerseys. Man, how fun was that first round series between Detroit and New York this past postseason 36 matchup and it was decided in six with the Knicks winning. But in three of the four Detroit losses, It was decided by a total of six points. And don’t forget how that last game ended game six where there was a potential foul on that last three-point attempt from the Pistons that was not called that could have changed the entire complex of that series. So once again, the clock is an issue at the start of the game. They’re going to reset the shot clock here. Don’t do that. And Detroit will start with the basketball. Pistons out there with Jenkins, Clintman, Smith, Laneir, and Holland. The Knicks have Bo Champ, Dier, Hakorti, McCuller, and Tyler Kick, a fan favorite in New York. Three ball hoisted up by Jenkins. And that’s how the scoring gets going here for the Pistons. This is a near sellout crowd at the pavilion. In the smaller of the two venues across the hall, Thomas and Mack, the 20,000 seat arena for Greg Anony’s jersey used to hang in the rafters. No, I still hang player still there. I’m going have to send you a Polaroid. out of now. Nick’s summer league head coach is Jordan Brink, who’s entering his third year on the coaching staff, part of the director uh the player development crew, also the director of video services. You know, interestingly enough, he was the Piston summer league head coach back in 2022. Some might say that he got an upgrade, a promotion. I don’t think they’d say that in Detroit. And an out of bounds call on Smith, the Pistons summer league head coach, a guy you know well, Vitali Potapinko, 12th pick by the Cavaliers back in that fame 1996 NBA draft. Spent 11 years playing in the NBA and returning to the staff. They’re going up top for Hawk 40. McCull comes down with it. Gets stripped away by Holland. Here comes Holland on the break. Gives it up and it gets stripped away by the Knicks. Good job of getting back by Marjan Bochamp. Well, that was an example of of Holland just his defensive instincts are as good as anybody on the perimeter that I’ve seen. He just as relentless at being around the basketball and creating havoc got the rebound, got it over to McCuller. And this is Tyler Koh, who we’re going to spend a lot of time talking about today. Rod Holland comes up with his second steal in the early going and finishes plus the opportunity for one more. Holland always aggressive on both ends of the court in the NBA regular season. We’re seeing it here in summer league from the 20-year-old. It just shows you the value of defense and again just always around the ball, always in the right spot, the right time there and able to force the turnover, get out in transition and an opportunity for an N1. So Ron Holland just celebrated his 20th birthday earlier this week. Averaged six and a half points in his rookie campaign. Knocks down the three-point play there. He’s really focusing on two things here, Greg, from Ron Holland. Number one, that outside shot. Working with one of the best shooting coaches in the game. A porti gets the put back for the New York Knicks. And that’s how they get on the board by four here. And that’s what you want to see from Laorti. His ability to attack the offensive glass. Holland didn’t settle for the outside shot. Takes it again hard to the cup and he’ll go back to the free throw line. Take another look at the drive by Bo Champ and the put back by Hawkport. And this is again another reason why it’s so important to attack the rim, right? You force help, you create offensive rebounding opportunities there. Knockporty took advantage. So, Holland back at the free throw line, not only working on that outside shot with one of the best shooting coaches in the NBA, Fred Vincent, but he says a lot of the issues he had with his shot last year had to do with a lack of lower body strength. And that’s where GA he’s tried to improve this summer. Yeah. And and I think it’s important and I think he will over time. I’ll tell you the one thing about our league, the one skill set that every player improves on is shooting because that’s the one thing you do literally every day. And so I I don’t worry about that. But you don’t want to lose sight of why they drafted you fifth. They didn’t draft you because you were a great shooter, right? They drafted you because you can impact winning. And they are trying to reestablish the way that they do things in Detroit. that grit and grind out uh formula that they had such success with in all of their championship runs and they have the makings of that kind of squad here again. To Smith got fouled on his way up. Misses the front end of a two-shot foul. To Smith on a two-way deal with the Pistons out of Mississippi State last year got into one game with the Pistons. spent most of his season with the Motor City Crews in the G-League. Of course, the Pistons regular season squad led by JB Picker Staff had a sensational year if it were not for the guy that replaced him in Cleveland, Kenny Atkinson. JB Bickerstaff likely would have won coach of the year in the NBA. Dick’s looking for a back door cutter. It was taken away there by Chaz Laneir. You’ve heard that before, haven’t you, about these guards from Tennessee who could take it away. Jenkins pulls up. It’s Jenkins pure on the jumper. Tell you what, early on the Pistons really active defensively have really taken the Knicks out of what they’re trying to do offensively. Tyler Kick off the window and it’s now a 10 to4 game. So Tyler Kolick coming in out of Marquette and I think it’s an interesting conversation to have about Tyler Kick. As you look at this guy, this is what he can do. He’s one of the few guys obviously outside of Jaylen Brunson that can playmake off the dribble, create his own shot, and create for others, which may be key for Mike Brown next season. Again, it’ll be interesting to see in terms of Mike Brown’s vision of whether or not there are going to be opportunities for Cole. You’re right, he’s got a terrific skill. He’s probably the best passer on their team. a very pass firstminded player, but he also does have an ability to take and make shots as well. There’s a carry. Tyler Colick signed a deal with the Knicks. He got more than $6.5 million of guaranteed money, which at the time when he did that was a record for a second round draft pick. Got into 41 games last year with the Knicks. your point about passing had 71 70 assists in those 41 games and only 18 turnovers. Here’s Kick again dishing it off to Hawk 40 who can’t finish. Kick gets it back. Kick from three off target. Holland comes down with it for the Pistons. 620 to go first quarter. Been a slow start here for the Knicks. They’re now just two for nine from the field. Detroit has hit three of their first four shots, making it four of their first five. And that’s John Holland showing off that mid-range game. I tell you what, that was an example of his lower body strength being better because that was a tough finish and a nice steal there. Another steal. Here’s Bobby Clintman defense into offense. The Knicks have committed four turnovers in the opening minutes here. And we talked about this, I keep harping on it, but the ability to extend the pressure getting in the passing lanes. Pistons putting on a clinic here early with their length, athleticism, and attack of the rim. And point lead for Detroit takes us to our first timeout. People, they’re good for squad. Hey. Hey. Hey. a lot of in a lot of passing lanes. Had four steals, four turnovers by the Knicks have led to seven points in the first four minutes and 7 seconds. You you can see from a culture standpoint, that’s something that coach Bicker staff and the front office believe in. They want guys who are committed to defending the basketball. A fifth steel and a hard foul committed by Luca Shuka. Say that again. Luca. Okay. Bobby Clintman will go back to the free throw line. Take a look at another steal by the Pistons. Well, but again, they’re on their heels. Poor spacing there and the fact that they have not handled the pressure well. And this is where if you’re Tyler Coat, he’s going to have to do a much better job of initiating their offense. They are not getting into the spots they want to to run their off offense. They’re being extended out, which makes it a lot easier to get those deflections and steals that lead to those early runouts. Last year, Detroit acquired the rights to Bobby Clintman after Minnesota selected him with the 37th pick. Quintman gotten to eight games with the big club. Spent most of his time in the G-League. Knicks have put in Mohamed Diawara. He goes down low and Luca gets his first bucket. One of the things you want to do to offset pressure is to move the basketball. Don’t allow the Pistons to lock in on the on the ball. Ron Holland being aggressive. We came into this game anticipating him being assertive with the three-point or outside shot here. He’s been aggressive in the mid-range. Good passing by the Knicks leading to a bucket to get them back within 10. Luca Skooka Shuka Shooka. Can he shoot it? Well, last year in Germany, he was a 34% three-point shooter. Okay. Jury’s still out. That’s what That’s what we say. 34% though that’s above average true shooting that’s a little over 50 so there’s hope this is Ron Holland who shot just 24% from three-point territory but 47% overall some fullcourt pressure put on by Detroit they have been active so far one fired up by who else but Shuka I told you he’s a shooter and that stat that you just mentioned about about Holland I really like when you shoot 47% as a rookie. That speaks in part to your basketball cube because that means he’s shooting shots that he knows he can make. He’s not spending a lot of time proving what he can’t do. And that’s one of the most important things you can do as a young player to earn the trust of your teammates and the and the coaching staff. Shuka misses the front end of the free throws. Ron Holland saying in the leadup here to summer league that he was he was happy with last year, but he feels like he could have done more. And that’s definitely putting a chip on his shoulder as Detroit comes down with a rebound. Shooka missed both free throws. Pistons lead it 17-7. Halfway point of the first quarter. Here’s Holland driving kick. McCuller there to interrupt it. Finally, the Knicks capitalize on a Detroit miscue. Kick gets the transition bucket. 17 to8 Detroit. Jenkins quickly back the other way throwing it up and it gets interrupted by McCuller and it’ll be Detroit basketball. You can see also an early emphasis by Detroit to try to play with more pace. They are really pushing the tempo which tells you that’s one of the areas they want to see more progress. They want to improve their pace as a group. Often times you can create a lot of easier shots when you can play earlier in the shot clock. Here’s Chaz Laneir out of Tennessee. Long two comes up way short. That was a really long two. That should have been a medium two. Lener second team all SEC. Tied for sixth in the nation in three-pointers made last year as a member of the Volunteers squad. Got another member of the Volunteers here as well. It’s a Kai Ziggler. We’ll see if he checks in at some point. Couple of substitutions. Laneir out along with Smith. Nick’s ball here. 16 on the shot clock. Pick down low. Diawara up top. Three ball. No good by Shuka. And there’s a tussle underneath. There’s going to be a foul on New York. We’re going to charge it to James Naji who just checked in. Naji selected 31st in the draft back in 2023. And how about this on on that draft night? Traded drafted by Detroit. Naji was then immediately shipped to Boston then immediately shipped to Charlotte. That is crazy. And then ended up in New York as part of the Carl Anthony Towns deal. Explain that one. Corner three ball by Detroit is put up and in by Tollu Smith. Tool Smith knocking down that triple and a great find there by Jenkins off the dribble. McCull driving baseline reverse style for Devin McCullard Jr. Good to see him springy. Remember he had knee surgery last spring. not getting it to Clintman. Clintman with a body in his face. Shuka commits the foul. That is still the one of the best plays in basketball. Pump fake. He wasn’t even in a position to shoot the basketball, but showed the shot and shoot a bit and able to get two free throws. It’ll be Bobby Clintman back to the free throw line. was taken by the Pistons out of the Australian Professional Basketball League, the NBL. 69 225 originally from Sweden. Misses, but Detroit gets the offense aboard. The drive, the kick. Holland reverses it. Clintman straightaway
