🔴LIVE 🔴 New York Mets VS Kansas City Royals/ July 13/MLB THE SHOW 25
Inter baseball on MLB the show. It’s the New York Mets going up against the Kansas City Royals. And we’ll be back with the first pitch right after this. Coming up on the first pitch and towing the slab here, Michael Waka. Well, that whip is just below the league average, and that’s a good thing in this case, not allowing too many base runners. So, on most days, he’s going to go out there and compete and put his team in a position to win. And I expect to see that from him in this one today. Ready to go now. Here’s the left fielder, Brandon NMO. And that’s off the inside edge. And with that, we’re underway in Kansas City. First pitch 71 the 10 foul ball there. Swing and a pop off in foul ground. has room and he makes the catch. Here’s a Mets lineup now. Someone who makes things happen for them in part with his legs. Tyrone Taylor. Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position. Are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. Francisco Lindor in the box here lets that one go for a ball. Lindor was born in Puerto Rico but actually played his high school ball in Florida. One out. Base is empty. Popped up on the left side of the infield. Garcia under it. Makes the grab and there’s two gone. Batting third rightielder Juanto. Here’s Juan Sodto. All right, Michael, let’s go. That one’s in there. 0 and one. And that drops in for a strike. This guy’s pounding the zone. Hitters don’t have time to think in between pitches. That misses the zone. Going to count one and two. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one, two, don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you get hurt. Two out. Base is empty. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. And now it’s even up. Good purpose pitch right there. trying to tease him, get him to raise his sights, pop something up and make it an easy out. And that one is lifted in the air. Isbel under it. Makes the grab and that’s the inning. We’ll go to the bottom of the first. 0 0 back here at Kaufman Stadium. Our starting pitcher in this one, Kodi Singa. And Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure, he’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. Most guys, they get a little tight, they start to aim the baseball, but for some reason, he gets looser, the ball comes out of his hand with more life, and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. Jonathan India, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. Little chopper rolls foul and a foul ball. Foul ball still a one and two count. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. And he dodges that fast ball. He’s great hitting the ball the other way. And that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. And a foul ball. He stays alive. And there’s a ball. Swinging a ground ball. What a stop. Fires to first. Throw off line. He’s safe. And a nice job there to keep it from getting away. Well, this is unfortunate because it looked like it was going to be an awesome play. Something we see on the highlights tonight and tomorrow. But you have to applaud the effort on the stop. And if you don’t take care of the throw, it goes from a wow moment to one you regret really quick. Now here’s Bobby Whit Jr. just missed. Swinging a foul out of play. Looked like he got a little excited on that fast ball. Got to think to yourself, want to stay up the middle that way. If you’re a little bit early, you hit it out of the ballpark. If you’re a little late, opposite field not. India gets his lead at first with nobody out with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. And that one almost hit him. Still just the second batter of the inning. And on the mound, he’s already thrown 13 pitches. They’ve got him working hard out there. On the ground. The third might be two. Mauricio tossed to second onto first. Double play. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leagers. They make tough plays look simple. Vinnie Pasquantino steps in for the Royals. In the air, pretty deep out to center field. Taylor makes the grab and that’ll end the inning. Scoreless after one. New inning getting started. Here’s Peter Wonzo. All around. I think if you asked anyone in this organization who’s the best hitter in the lineup, they would say him. Waka back to work. That one catches the corner for a strike. Nowadays, with advanced metrics and increased use of moving the infielders around, defense isn’t necessarily about making errors. Are you able to get to the ball? Are you able to position fielders where hitters hit the ball, but within the new shift rules? And that one’s a little bit low. Two and one. And an area that goes unnoticed is the coach that’s responsible for positioning and then uh the research person that’s providing the information. So what we’re seeing in baseball, so many more people behind the scenes that are contributing to the success between the lines. Just misses with that one. Back when you played, it wasn’t the empirical data we have now. It was a guy with a ruler and a diamond taking a colored pencil and drawing a line where he thought someone had hit the ball. Right. That or just going off of gut or feel. What does it look like his swing is today? What’s the pitcher throwing? They are sticking to the metrics and what seems to be most consistent for that hitter regardless of who the pitcher is on the mound. Next offering is in for a strike. Looks like a really good fast ball today. You can hear that catcher mitt popping. Looking forward to hearing a lot of that one in this one. Struck him out swinging. Perez on first. Out. Two away now after the drop third strike. Oh, big power guy right there and generating so much bat speed. It’s hard to bring that to a halt once you’ve committed. They tried to check the swing, just couldn’t do it. Jeff McNeel stands in. First pitch and that’s in for a strike. Here’s a batter who for whatever reasons plays better on the road and that should help him here today. Love how vocal the umpire is today. No doubt in the hitter’s mind, catcher’s mind, and even the pitcher’s mind as to the conviction in the call. Next one is off the plate. And that’s ball one. Highfly ball out to left field. Ray sizes this one up. He makes the grab and that’ll do it. Offense held in check there. Now to the bottom of the second, we’re tied nothing. Nothing. We head to the bottom of the second. Now the third baseman, Mikel Garcia. He’s gonna finish with a new careerhigh in stolen bases. Chris. Yeah, that’s in there. And it’s 0 and one that clips the corner. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. And that is downstairs. It’s a ball in two strikes. Stays alive. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And a one, two. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. Pitcher having a pretty tough time getting that swing and miss. Third foul ball in a row. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. He had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this. Known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. And now it’s Salvador Perez to the plate. fought off foul. Second inning here. No score. Ground ball left side and foul ball. Salvador. That one to first. Alonso takes it to the bag and that quickly. Two away. Batting six right number 14 Jack Kaggle Leone steps in for the Royals. Line to left and foul ball. slides for the stop to first. Nicely done for the out. Royals go down one, two, three. We’ll move to the third with no score. And we’re back. Top half of the third inning. Digging in, Ronnie Mauricio. Mauricio 23 years old and he was born in the Dominican Republic and that is out of play. Come on, Kansas City. Let’s go. Let’s go. Swanging a ball drilled center field. Isbel has a beat on it. Makes the catch and there’s one gone. batting catcher Luis Torren. And next for the Mets, Luis Torren, and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. If I’m at the dish right now, I am aggressive over the heart of the plate. This guy’s been filling up the strike zone, so you know you’re going to get a good pitch to hit. And as nasty as his stuff is, you might as well take all three swings. The 1-1 is fouled off. Headed down the line and that’s a foul ball. The pitch bows it off. Still one and two. Top of the third. No score. Closed but called a ball and the count is two and two. That one missed. Recognized that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. up the middle. Loftton throws to first. He made the pitcher earned that out after a long at bat. Tyrone Taylor. Yeah, the batter now. Tyrone Taylor. He’s already set a new career best for stolen bases in a season. Chris first pitch doesn’t find the zone right through there for a strike. So a foul ball makes it one and two. gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Battling here as he fouls it away. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. Goes down looking. Nothing doing for the Mets. And we’re still knotted at zero. Bottom of the inning. Leading off Nick Loftton. Nick Loftton. And a foul ball and delivers outside. The one-1 is fouled off. swing and a miss. Struck him out. Went back to the fast ball and it was effective. That’s tough. You see it well. I mean, that was clearly up and out of the strike zone, but that’s one of the hardest things. And when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level, that discipline to remember I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that pitch when a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity. Now at the plate, John Ra outside low and now it’s even one and one. One down. Base is empty. Good job to fight that one off. Swing and a miss. And he chases that one in the dirt. Gets to it onto first. And there’s two gone following the strikeout. Really love the pitch sequence right there. I’m telling you what, pitcher and catcher on the same page right now. And now it’s Kyle Isbel. That one ripped. That’s bad. High bounce over the fence for an automatic double. That ball exploded off his bad end off the warning track as well as it bounced over the fence and it sounded really good, too. He just put together a really nice swing and just missed a home run. So, the Royals batting order turns over. Jonathan Indie at the plate. Fouled off. He was late. Well, they’re looking to get on the board first here after that clutch two double made this inning interesting. Isbel at second with two down just missed. Fast ball in for a strike at the count. One and two. Let’s do it. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. Way high with that one. And that’s ball two. Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out. Gets out of the jam. Clearly, he’s happy with those results. As we go to the top of the fourth and stepping in for New York, Brandon NMO. That’s in for a strike. Well, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point. Well, these Mets as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But I think they have to. And that misses off the outside edge. There’s a swing and a drive back there. Unbelievable. And it’s off the wall. Safe at second with a leadoff double. He was all over that one. Put a really nice balanced swing on it. And when you can rope one into the gap like that, you’re thinking extra bases from the first couple of steps out of the box. And he’ll feel real good about that one. Runner in scoring position now. And a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. And now it’s Frankie Lindor. And a big swing and a miss. He’s gone off speed. He needs to elevate here with two strikes out of the zone. Man at second and one and two. Fourth inning underway. No score. Comes up empty as he chases that one in the dirt. Perez on first. Gets him. One away on a drop third strike. Well, it’s good job of completing the strikeout at first base, but the one downside is it did allow that runner from second to move up to third, and that’s with one out. They’ve got more ways now to get him home, and that makes it another strikeout situation coming up. Sodto the next to hit, takes outside with the go ahead run at third. Top half of inning number four. This guy’s seen two change ups in a row. Could be a little vulnerable for a fast ball right here. That’s in there. That is strike two. I think he was sitting off speed right there because he just let the fast ball go by. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Strike the next offering upstairs. In this situation, he’s trying to get you to pop something up or jam you. That’s a really good take knowing you got an opportunity to drive in a run here. Here’s the 2-2 and that one missing low. Pete Alonzo in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Oh, he brings it down. Nice play. Comes home with it. The tag safe and it’s one- nothing. Now batting first baseman Alonzo, one down. And now it’s the polar bear. Pete Alonzo out of line out towards center. Isbel pulls that one down. That’s out number two. He was all over that fast ball right there. I tell you what, if he gets under it just by a fraction of an inch or a little bit more, that’s way back. And now it’s Mark Ventos 0 for one so far. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Activity in the bullpen. Steven Cruz appears to be getting loose. Serpa, the lefty, warming up as well. Fast ball for a strike. perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. He’s going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. Outside low now. One and two. He goes down looking. So a run-on one hit. No errors and a man left. And midway in the fourth, it’s the Mets one and the Royals nothing. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. And to the plate for Kansas City, Bobby Wit Jr. You know, this guy’s great speed is in the back of that pitcher’s mind. If he can get on, it’s going to give him one more thing he’s got to think about. Action in the Mets bullpen. Reed Garrett, the young right-hander up and throwing. Densky getting loose as well. And the next pitch is way outside. That’s a little bit low now in this three ball count down in the ball game. You’ve got to be very selective. Take your walk if they’ll give it to you. Fast ball for a strike. Three and one. And the tying run is on base. Well, he’s starting to look a little gassed to me. And we’ll see if they go to the bullpen in this spot or not. No outs, runner at first. And next up for the Royals, Vinnie Pasquantino. This is a great dynamic right here. Speedy runner at first, thinking about taking second. Catcher with Here goes the runner. Pitch in for a strike. Transfer bobbled and there’s no throw. runner edges away at second. As a pitcher, you know, the runner on second is ready to push things with his speed. A base hit, it’s probably going to be a big run, so you really have to execute on the mound. Ball one there. That’s good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, you had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Next pitch is outside. Out to short. Lindor on to first. One out in the bottom of the fourth. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Mike El Garcia. He was a strikeout victim his first time. Not close with that one. Ball one. Strike one. Trying to hold a one-run lead. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth and a count one and two. moved to second and he’s back in on a dive. Next offering way off the plate. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You could tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. That one misses. Full count now. Salvador Perez in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here and ball four to a board. Oh, looking for a swing and miss right there or for the ump to help him out and make a call with that last pitch, but neither happened. Close pitch, but a good take to earn that wall. And here comes the Mets manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Kodai Singa won’t go any further tonight and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Re Garrett gets the ball now. Still pretty early in the ball game. So this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. Two on, one out. Salvador Perez will hit next. 0 for one. He grounded out to first his last time. And that’s downstairs. And that is ball one. Way to lay off that pitch down. And that’s downed away. Good spot for the hitter. definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. The 20 is in for a strike. Called strike right there. The next offering misses and the count is filled up. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. Whit at second. Garcia over at first with one away in the air left field. NMO running hard to get it. Two away. Now batting number 14. And now the right fielder Jack Kaggle Leone rolled out to second in his first at bat. Swing and a miss. One. That split is a pretty nasty pitch. Explodes out of the hand. Looks like a fast ball and the bottom just falls out of it. In the air to left down the line, makes the grab and that will end the inning. Royals strand a pair and it remains one- nothing. Now pitching. We’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Anel Serpa, left-handed batter at the plate and he’s been excellent in those matchups this year. So this seems like a calculated move. And now here’s Jeff McNeel. Fly to left his first time. Royals. Hit in the air. Left field. Ray falls it in and there’s one away. Now batting third Ronnie Moraicio now a switch hitter batting right first offering and it just misses. There’s a strike late with the swing there. Now a pop up on the infield. Pasquantino nabs it. Two down. Now batting catcher Luis Torren. And now the catcher comes up to him. Luis Torren. Foul ball. Two down. Nobody on. And that drops in for a strike. Amazing to look up and see 88 mph on that change up. Back in the day, that was a pretty good fast ball, but with high velocities these days, that speed differential is right where it needs to be. Isbel makes the catch and that’ll do it. Back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound, Chris Dinski. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. One-run game. So, up now for Kansas City. Nick Loftton struck out swinging his first time. That’s outside. One and0. Just missed. Well, he looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. And that’s in for a strike. swings through that one for strike two. That misses and a full countdown. John Ray in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. swings through it and that’s a strikeout. Oh, nothing too fancy on the strikeout pitch right there. Just a low 90s fast ball and I’m not sure he was trying to challenge him, but that’s pretty much what happened. Very hitable location, but he found a way to just get it by him. So, they’re making a move for a bat off the bench. Freddy Fine. One out and the base is empty for him. And that’s in the dirt. On the ground down the line and it’s foul. looking to get the tying run on base and a base hit. One of the hardest things to do in the game to stay mentally and physically ready for the big opportunity and he came through for his club right there. Kyle Isbel steps in for the Royals. Doubled his first time. Ruer takes off and that one fouled off. Cut on and lifted in the air. Puts it away for the out. Now batting designated hitter Jonathan Jonathan India steps in for the Royals for two in this one. Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Right now they’re looking for something. Hit hard into the gaps. Give them an opportunity with two outs to score that run from first. This one chopped on the ground but foul to third. They take the force out and that is the inning. So one left for Kansas City. Still behind by a count of one to nothing. We’re back and they make a change to start the sixth. the new pitcher, Steven Cruz. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpin can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Now into the ball game on defense, number 17. He’ll be out in left field. And stepping in for New York, Tyrone Taylor. His first at bat was a strikeout. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. That’s a strike. It’s 0 and one. Boo. This guy’s definitely a plus runner. But what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time. Never takes a break. It’s guys like that, even though they don’t have the elite speed, the fact that they’re consistent with it, they make moves on the base paths. in the air on the infield. Loftton makes the grab. One away. Now batting leftielder Brandon NMO. Here’s Brandon NMO. One for two. There’s the strike. Cruz goes 6′ 7 in. He features a fourseam fastball, a cutter, and he works in a slider. Next offering upstairs, that one missing inside. Check. Swing. Called. Strike. And now two and two. Way high. Ripped right field. That’s back there. That one way back and it’s gone. his 19th home run of the year. It’s two nothing. That was blasted. Absolutely. No doubt off the bat. Certainly worthy of another look to find out the distance of that home run via Stackcast. 470 ft. Sing. Say it with me. Wow. Yeah, he got every stitch on that baseball. And you don’t see many homers go as far as that one just did. I’m sure it’s already spreading like wildfire on the internet. Man, these kind of home runs don’t go unnoticed. Now up to hip, Francisco Lindor. This one smoked on its way out of here. They do it again. Back-to- back homers. Home run number 20 on the year. And they tack on to their lead. It’s 3 nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself. At bat after at bat, he’s that confident. Back-to-back homers. Always a special feeling at the ballpark, especially if it’s your team that does it. And those guys get to slap hands at home plate. This is the kind of thing that can really fire up a ball club. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Steven Cruz departs. It’s a three-run game and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. Taylor Clark on the pitch here. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. One out, bases empty. Woo now. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Still only one out here in the inning. Two pretty nasty sliders to get this hitter in an 02 count. If you’re up there at the plate, you got to look up in the zone and spit on anything that’s down. And he swings and lifts one to deep center field. This looks like extra bases. And that’s going to roll to the wall. Sodto round second, heads for third. The relay, the tag, and he’s out trying for three. Absolutely perfect execution of the relay right there to cut him down at third. And he probably should have shut it down at second base and been happy with the double, but it took a great play to get him. You just have to tip your cap. Insteps the polar bear Peter Lonzo and that misses. And that’s ball one. And that one is in for a strike. Good pitch. Action in the pen down there. Michael Laorenzan, the veteran right-hander, appears to be loosening up. Long also getting ready. this to third. Wide throw pulls him off the bag and the inning still alive. Maybe just a little lack of concentration on that throw. Two out. You think you’ve got the play made. Players are starting to move off the field towards the dugout and then everyone’s got to come back. Sometimes you take that throw for granted and that’s all it takes to keep the inning going. Two outs, runner at first. And now the DH Mark Ventos just off the outside edge. Ball one. Alonso the runner at first with two gone. And another ball. Struggled a little bit in this one. Couple of strikeouts earlier, but doing a much better job in this at bat to get ahead and find a good hitter count at 2 and 0. Two outs. And that’s in for a strike. And it’s two and one now. Nasty two- slider there for a strike. That tells you he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch. And that one is in for a strike. Ground ball right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s now three nothing. You’re dialed into the show. We’re back. And on the mound is the closer Austin Warren. A chance at his first save of the year. And to the plate for Kansas City, Bobby Wit Jr. He’s 0 for one. Bobby Wit Jr. Swing and a miss. There’s the slider and it’s 0 and one. Well, these Royals looking to string together better at bats when they have runners on, but it just hasn’t happened for them yet. They’ve had their chances with runners in scoring position, but nobody’s been able to deliver a big hit in those situations. Foul ball still 0 and two. And you got to give some credit to the other side as well. Well, they’ve been able to get out of a few tough jams, but frustration is mounting for this offense, no doubt. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going on the ground right side. Alonso takes it himself. One away. Bottom of the six. That’s a huge defensive play in the late stages of the game. It might not be the most challenging we’ve seen today, but it needed to be made. That’s helping your team. And next up for the Royals, Vinnie Pasquantino. That one finds the zone going on. Pitching has been pretty dominant in this one, but you got to be careful. Not working with too big a lead. They could get right back in this ball game if you’re not careful. Left field way back there. head and one hops the wall, makes the turn and heads for second. And he’ll pull in there with a stand up double. Oh, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. That pretty much split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay. Really important at bat coming up now. One out, runner at second. Here’s the third baseman, Mike El Garcia. He is struck out and he is walked. Right down to shoot. Strike one. One out and a runner at second. Fouled off down the right side. Foul ball still a one and two count. man at second. Ripped to short, tossed to Alonzo, and they’re down to their last out. If you want to be a great defense, you have to deliver consistently. It doesn’t matter how many highlight reel plays you make if you can’t execute the small stuff, just like we saw. And now it’s going to be Salvador Perez. pitch misses inside and it’s one and0. And a strike in there. And that one is inside. They’re down to their final strike. This could end it. And a sling and a miss. And that is the ball game. Well, his first save of the season is in the books and that was a nice job of him coming in the game and closing it out. He’s off and running now. A shut out in this one. Three nothing our final score for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
