MLB LIVE🔴 Philadelphia Phillies vs San Diego Padres – Jul 13, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
All right, just about set to go and getting to start number 18. Yeah, and as whip tells you, he’s been pretty effective this year on the mound. I mean, opposing hitters having a hard time getting on base and then being able to really distract him and do damage in terms of getting around the base path. So, taking the mound, this is a guy you want out there if you’re his teammate, and I expect him to be good in this one. Trey Turner leading things off, but takes a strike. The shorts stop takes a ball. The one-1 is fouled off. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. That one is upstairs. Two balls, two strikes. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. fights it off. He’ll see another that one close. Rule the ball. And that’s ball three. Well, as a pitcher, when you make a big pitch down around the knees and don’t get the call, it’ll lead at you out there. So, some handle it a little bit better than others. And right here, clearly letting the ump hear it a little bit. Foul ball and it remains a full count. Slice to right and it stays fair. Now he’ll turn for second and he’s got a leadoff double. Just a great at bat right there. Saw a lot of pitches. He really shot that one down the right field line and somehow found a way to keep it from slicing. Foul. One thing that was great about the approach, his head was down all the way through the pitch and that’s how you do it. And Kyle Schwarber will come up. Another solid power season and delivers outside. [Laughter] The one that now one missed. No outs. Runner on second. Runner breaks for third. Pitch inside. Throw to third. Save. And the go-ahead run is now only 90 ft away. [Applause] and he takes the strike. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. Swing and a miss. And it’s a full count now. Just threw that fast ball by an elevated. And if you’re not looking up in that location, very difficult to catch up to, especially with that velocity. [Applause] Next offering popped in the air right field. Squeezes it. Runner tags for home. The throw is offline and he’s in to score on the board first. It’s one zip. Maybe caught that one off the end just a little bit. Couldn’t quite barrel it up enough to really drive it. And now here is Harper. The outfield shifted pretty heavily towards right field. If you don’t get ahead in the count, you can forget about having any success against him. Headed towards the corner and a foul ball. He didn’t want to give up that run, but he did. Got the fly ball. Sack fly out. Now it’s time to attack these other guys. Get your team back in the dugout. [Applause] One down. Base is empty. Highf fly ball out towards left field. High bounce takes it over the fence for an automatic double. The automatic double kind of feels like enjoying cruise control in your car. Boo. You don’t need to keep the pedal down as you cruise into second base. Just no worries in the world. You know what? He put a really good swing on that one. And here comes Alec Bow. That one finds the zone. Strike one. [Applause] Slice the other way and foul. [Applause] swing and a miss. Struck him out. Oh, that right there is just a pitcher’s pitch. Tailing away from the hitter, blowing away with some good action at the end. You know, even if he gets the bat to that ball, it’s probably just a weak ground ball to the opposite side. I tell you what, that’s a tremendous two- strike pitch. Nick Castanos at the plate now. [Applause] That one outside and that’s ball one. This hitter loves attacking the first pitch, so not giving him something to hit is a good move. Harper stands at second with two gone. [Applause] Just missed. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Max Kepler on deck for the Phils. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position. He’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. And that one clips the corner. Runner at second. Two down. [Applause] in there at the knees and the count is filled up. Full count. Battling here as he fouls it away. [Applause] 3-2. Got him swinging. A run on two hits and they leave one. Onto the bottom of the first. It’s the Phillies one. The Padres’s coming to bat. [Applause] Back here in San Diego. Today’s starting pitcher, Ranger Suarez. What do you have on him, Chris? Well, this guy’s just been filthy out there on the mound. Hitters batting under 200 against him. And they’re just having a hard time squaring up anything, doing any type of damage. The only way he hurts himself is if he gives up the free passes and surrenders a rare home run. But outside of that, it’s going to be a tough job for the opposing lineup today. Fernando Tatis Jr. to hit here. Fast ball for a strike. 4 and one. And one inside corner and that’s called the strike. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls. But at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. That’s outside. Going to count one and two. And down on strikes he goes. And one out now. Oh, that curveball had some pretty good break to it. As you can see, the hitter just locked up a little bit. Thought it was a great pitch to hit, but sometimes you’re looking for something else and you can’t pull the trigger. Luis Arise in the box with one away as he takes ball one. One out. Space is empty. Fought off foul. Not close with that one. And it’s two and one. [Music] There’s a swing and a miss. Bell. And those hitters count sometimes can be a little too aggressive and a good pitcher will play off of that. He’s got to get a better pitch to hit. 3-2 now. Really good take especially with two strikes. Good job to fight that one off. Eighth pitch of the at bat coming up. Gets a piece and stays alive [Music] on the ground right side. Takes it himself. That was a strong at bat even though he couldn’t find a way on base. As we take a look at the Padres’s lineup and one of the most exciting young stars in the sport, Jackson Merrill. Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position. Are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. Manny Machado in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Two out space is empty. Next offering is downstairs. And Manny gets a piece. Fights that one away. Still one and two. And that’s in the dirt. Well, he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here, too, too. He’s already seen the curve ball couple of times in this at bat, so might have it timed up and ready for it. [Music] Strike three. Got him looking on the change up. Padres’s down in order. Still behind by a count of one to nothing. Back here at Beco Park now batting Max Kepler. Max Kepler. [Music] First pitch doesn’t find the zone and that gets the inside corner for a strike. One way to make a guy real uncomfortable at the plate is pound him inside with good velocity. They’re doing that right here. And a foul ball. [Applause] High-fly ball down the left field line. That one back there and a foul ball. The idea was right. Looking to locate that fast ball up and in. He just missed his spot a little bit. [Applause] [Music] On the ground into the outfield base hit. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. Still able to come through behind in the count right there. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground balls. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. And now it’s JT Riom. First pitch misses at the belt and fires and that’s fouled off. Pretty good pitch to take a pass at in a one count. Just not able to square it up. Runner, runner, runner on the go. On the ground of first. There’s one. Got him. Back to first. And that is a double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. This is Bryson. That misses the zone. Ball one. Two down. Nobody on. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. There they count. One and two. Two strike. [Applause] [Music] Hard hit left side. Sends it to first and that’ll do it. Down quickly. Go to Phillies. They lead it one- nothing. ready to go for the last half of the play. Gavin Sheets. Sheets. Suarez back to work. That’s off the inside corner. One and0. misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. Carl Dixon doing the umpiring behind the plate. And Boo, I’m not sure if it’s because he sort of sets up higher than most. But one thing to be aware of with Dixon is the high strike. Not usually a big deal because most players are swinging at pitches up there, but we may see some surprise looks from hitters from time to time because that’s just so unusual. And there’s ball four. And that’s how they get their first base runner of the game. It’s tough after falling behind a hitter or two balls and no strikes, but now at least he gets a fresh start against a new batter. But he needs to get back into the strike zone and start pitching with conviction. The runner first needs to be careful right here. He’s dealing with a pickoff artist on the mound. Xander Bogarts in now. Takes ball one off the plate. Way to lay off that pitch down. Oh, that’s this one in the dirt. No advance. Good job behind the dish. That one down the line and it’s just foul. That was close. [Applause] And that drops in for a strike. Belly left that change up. Got away with one there and he’ll take it, but doesn’t want to make that mistake again. Swinging a ground ball down the line and it’s fouled. The next pitch misses. Full count. Three and two. Oh, this count. runner not known for his speed, but I think you got to put him in motion. Try to avoid a double play here, boo. And ball forward to a board. Well, a breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. First and second, no outs. Jackson Merrill the next up for the Padres’s. That one finds the zone and it’s 0 and one. No outs. Runners at first and second. Strike two. Knowing that the pitcher wants a ground ball double play opportunity here. You’ve got to lay off pitches down in the zone right there. Swinging at that pitch. That’s a no no. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. [Applause] in the dirt. No movement on the bases. One and two the count. First and second here. No outs. Next pitch is outside. [Applause] That one the other way. Puts it away for the owl. Batting seven. The shorts stop. Jose Glacius. Jose Glacius gets a chance to hit now. How many times have we seen an early at bat change the course of a game? It happens every night in baseball. And maybe it happens again here. and fouled off. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. Outside and one and one. [Applause] And that one is lifted in the air. It’s going to fall for a hit. Water around third. throw his line and he scores. We’re tied at one. [Applause] Runners in the corners here. One away. Jake Croninworth the next up for the Padres’s. [Applause] Counts one and0 in the dirt. blocked, but no advance from the runners. [Applause] [Applause] Worm burner into the outfield for a knock. In comes the one from third. It’s an RBI single. It’s 2-1. Backto back base hits. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team of bat right there. Nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. Two on, one out. And now it’s Elias Diaz. And the first pitch misses for ball one. [Applause] just missed. Tough spot right here. Couple runners on. Two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Two on, one out. Right through there for a strike. Goodness. I think he just took the best pitch he’s going to see in this at bat. You don’t get many like that in that location. I don’t know if you take that pitch against any pitcher out there on the mount. And that one fouled off. [Applause] Ground ball left side and foul ball. Runners at first and second with one gone. Bottom half of inning number two. spoils the two strike pitch and he’ll see another. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Stays alive. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. And there’s a ball. [Applause] Base hit center field headed for the plate. He’ll score. It’s an RBI single. It’s 3-1. Not in time. He’s safe. Stringing them together. That’s three hits in a row. Handled that down and in breaking ball very well. It saw the break early coming from the other side and just let it get deep enough and dropped the barrel on it at the very last moment. Tatis at the plate for the second time as he takes ball one. Well, he’s just given up three straight hits and now behind in this count to this hitter. Might be a good time for somebody to call a timeout. Maybe the pitching coach to go out there and talk to him just a little bit. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. Stop. Acrobatic throw for one to first. Not in time. Great effort there. I promise you, they’re guys that get a little bit faster when they can smell an RBI. That was a possible inning ending double play. Great hustle and he gets rewarded with the RBI because of it. Louisa Rise stands in 0 for one. grounded out to first his last time. Runner on the goal. Pitch in for a strike. Rio throws not in time. It’s a stolen base. Singi, he definitely showed off the wheels there. Yeah, and it turned out to be a bang bang play. Statcast gives us the data and that stolen base wasn’t possible without that sprint speed. [Applause] He swings and fouls one off. [Applause] Man on second, two down. Hammered, base hit. Here comes Tatis around third. He will score and it’s an RBI single. It’s 51. I was watching his rounds during batting practice today. so impressed with his ability to let the ball travel, go back up the middle and the other way. Sometimes when you step in the box during the game, you get a little anxious and you get away from that, but so far I’ve seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation. So, a man aboard next for the Padres’s, Manny Machado. And that’s in for a strike 0 and one. [Applause] swing and a miss as he was late that time. More and more guys are looking to slug regardless of the count. In this situation, we’ll keep a close eye on his approach. One ball, two strike in the dirt, but kept close. Two outs. That one misses. Two balls, two strikes, the count. I’ve gotten to call some incredible NLDS games here at Petco Park between the Padres’s and their fierce rivals, the LA Dodgers. NLDDS game four here in 22 when the Padres’s knocked off LA. And then game four in 2024 when the Dodgers started their comeback and eventual run to the World Series. One of the great fan environments in baseball. [Applause] check swing on the 2-2 appeal to first and he went around. Not an easy call there, but that puts an end to the inning. But nine batters hit in the inning. Five come around to score. We play two full. It’s the Padres’s five and the Phillies one. And welcome back to the ballpark. Top half of the third inning. Brandon Marsh steps to the plate. Marsh throws right, bats left, 27 years old, and he was a second round pick back in 2016. Next offering upstairs, one ball, one strike. Hard hit left field base hit. So now back to the top of the order. Well, I’m not saying that play was easy, but it was harder than it needed to be thanks to the bad jump. Those small moments can be costly. Trey Turner at the plate. Doubled his first time. [Music] That one ripped. And that should be extra bases. And that’s going to roll to the wall. Coming home. He’ll score easily. Oh, that started and ended pretty quickly. No messing around right there. I love the approach he had right there with that pitch. Not trying to do too much, but still looking to drive it. And that’s exactly what he’s able to do into the opposite field gap for the double. Kyle Schwarber comes up to hit here. Drove in a run with a sack fly his first time up. Swings and misses. Strike one. You know, these Phils doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. They’re doing a good job of working the pitch count and they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well. Popped up to the left into foul ground has room and he makes the catch. Still relatively early, but with a pair of runs already on the board, the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set him up to do more damage later in this game. So here is Bryce Harper. Doubled his first time up. [Applause] Here’s the pitch. Runner on the move. There’s a ball. Throw to third. Save. That wasn’t close. [Applause] ripped to third and caught. That’ll drive you crazy as a hitter if you let it. I mean, he couldn’t have hit that ball more on the screws than he did and yet he’s got nothing to show for it. Hang with him. I know the feeling. And now it’s Alec Bow. Struck out on just three pitches last time. That’s a base hit. Run scores. A costly mistake in the outfield thanks to the bad read and terrible timing for that to happen. That’s a play you just want to forget about. Runner at first with two away. Here’s Nicholas Castillianos 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And that is ball one. try to get him to chase on the change up that time. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound from this situation ahead 20. He’s put himself in a really good spot in the air center field. Merrill on his way over and that is that. Two runs, three hits, no errors, and one left. We move on to the bottom of inning number three. It’s the Padres’s five and the Phillies three. And we’re back for the bottom of the third. Now sheets. Gford sheets. Yeah, big swing and a miss. You know, these Padres’s doing a good job at the plate with runners on base and that can be a key difference maker in the game. They’ve been delivering when it matters most. Batting over 750 with runners in scoring position so far. It’s been impressive to watch. And that skips into dirt. swings through it and that’s a strike out. Here’s Bogard and a run scored his first time. Bogard. That’s in there. That’s strike one. on the ground out to short. Turner with the throw to first and a couple of quick outs. Good fade and sinking action of that change up. Got that roll over. Jackson. So, two down now. And here is Jackson Merrill. He’s 0 for one. Ground ball to Bow. Padres’s go down one, two, three. Nothing doing there for the Friars and it remains 5-3. Back here in San Diego as we go to the top of the fourth. Max Kepler at the plate. And that’s too high. And that’s outside. Foul ball there. [Music] [Applause] ground ball right side. It squirts through. So, a man on base to start the inning. Couple of hits in a row for him here. Just one of those seen eye base hits through the infield. It just kind of rolled over on it a little bit, but sometimes those can find a hole and get you a knock. JT Realm Muto steps in. 0 for one so far. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. Ball one. [Applause] And that one off the outside edge [Music] and a foul ball. Ruer at first with no outs here. That’s to third. Machado the throw wide at first and both runners are safe. The batter number five, second base stop. Bryson stop the next to hit. Grounded out his first time off. [Applause] gets the outside corner with that one. He’s looking for a strike out or a ball on the ground for a double play to sort of calm this situation down. And a swing and a line drive to right field. Brings it in. Runny tags second. Here comes the throw. He’s in there. Good read there at second base to move up to third. Now it’s a lot easier to get that run in with one away. So digging in now for Philadelphia, Brandon Marsh. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. In this situation, the batter’s got to know what the pitcher is trying to do to him, and that’s trying to get him to hit the ball on the ground. Get two for one. You got to look for something up in the zone and worst case scenario, you deliver the sacrifice flag there. That drops in for a strike. I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. Just misses with that one. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. High in the air out to right. Tatis drifts towards it, hauls it in, and there’s two away. The batter number seven, short side, Trey Trey Turnerell. RBI knock for him last time. Now a chance to drive in another run. [Music] And a fast ball in there for a strike at 91. Felt impressed that he went right after him on that first pitch. That’s the key. Try to get ahead in the count. Then you can play around a little bit more as the at bat expands. And now it’s even up. One and one. Kepler on third. Real MO at first with two down. [Applause] outside loan. Two and one. It’s a big opportunity right here. But I love the way he’s slowing the game down. He’s shrinking his zone, making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to hit. Yeah, the two-1 hammer, but foul. Two on, two outs. And fast ball misses outside for a ball. counts full. Three and two. Kyle Schwarber would be next. Big bat with a potentially huge opportunity. And that’ll load the bases. Oh, that sets up a really big at bat in this game. These are the moments when everyone in the stadium gets really locked in. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Number 18 is done and he leaves with the bases loaded. So he’ll look for some help from his teammate coming in behind him. Now pitching out of the bullpen for the Padres’s number 66. And this is an important part of this game. Tight score and still a lot of outs to get. So they’re looking for a big outing out of them right here to get some critical outs. So bases all loaded up. So here’s the Phillies DH. Kyle Schwarber. We just might be talking about this at bat in our postgame rap. He’s proven he can drive in runs in these spots. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Base is loaded. Two down. Top half of inning number four. Swing and a miss as he was out front. I got a ball. One strike. [Applause] [Music] And a count one and two. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. [Applause] All loaded up. Dangerous hitter at the plate. That misses. And now two balls and two strikes. [Applause] in the air right side, makes the grab and that’s the third out. Phillies leave them loaded. They’re still down 53. Ready to go. And now the short stop Joseas Glacius and a pitch way high. This one chopped up the middle on the run. Throw to first. Pretty nice play there. Now batting second baseman shape thrown at work. Now here’s Jake Croninworth. Singled and scored his first time. Lots of players perform better at home and this batter is no exception. Might be the crowd or the familiar surroundings, but he’s typically better in this environment. Swings through that one. 0 and one. You tie a guy up like that, you’re feeling like you are in command. Highfly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. Base is empty, one away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Struck him out looking. Really love the pitch sequence right there. I’m telling you what, pitcher and catcher on the same page right now. Catcher number 17, Alias Diaz. Two outs, bases empty. Here’s Elias Diaz. Fouled off left side down the line and that’s a foul ball. Next offering is down low. One ball, two strikes. That one almost got him. Two strikes. [Music] Swaying in a ball popped in the air. Fair ball. That’s back to back singles for him. I don’t know how he’s able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it. That pitch was inside and he let it get really deep. So, pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it. So, the San Diego batting order turns over. Now it’s Fernando Tatis Jr. He caught it behind his back. Throw to first. What a play. Inning over. What a play to end the inning. There’s no way he saw that into the glove. No, you’re absolutely right. All he knew was the grounder was somewhere behind him. Just threw his glove out there and it stuck. That was pretty cool. Back here at Petco Park, we go to the top of the fifth. Here comes Bryce Harper. Harper. [Applause] [Music] Swinging a ball. Hammered left field. Lays out and makes the play. Hitter’s got a broken heart on that one. It had base hit written all over it. Maybe extra bases. Great diving catch for the upset. [Applause] And next will be the cleanup hitter, Alec Bow. That one fouled off. The Padres’s leading by two and we’re in the top of the fifth. Look out. Boom. That guy headed hit him. Thank you. And now the right fielder Nick Castanos for two in this one. outside low and it’s one and0. Cut on and lifted in the air. Tatis settles under this one. Puts it away for the out. And there’s two away. Max Kepler stands in for the Phillies. He’s two for two. That’s back there. That one way back and it’s gone. And this game is tied. It’s 55. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time in that at bat. Boo. Aggressive and it paid off. Well, he went up there. Oh, looking to do damage. I think he had his sights set on that pitch. He went and got it, then circled the bases. Got to bring up JT Realm. Mutoo [Applause] just missed. in the air on the infield. Arise under it, makes the catch and that is that. But the Phils get two on this blast. All even at five a piece. Major League Baseball is on the show. And welcome back to the ballpark. John Shami with my buddy Chris Singleton. And set to get us started. Bottom five, Luis Sas. Come on. Suarez back to work. Ripped to right. One down. The third baseman number 13, Manny. Here comes Manny Machado, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. [Applause] Right through there for a strike. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. One down. Base is empty. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Ball one there. Two strike. Next pitch is outside. [Applause] All tied up. Last half of inning number five. That misses and it’s three and two. [Applause] Swing and a chopper out to short. Tosses to first. So they get the out after a long battle at the plate. Good sinker low in the zone right there and produced exactly what he was looking for. Ball on the ground. Nice ground out. Here’s Gavin Sheets now. Left hand bat. He is struck out and he is walked close but called a ball and that’s ball one. Good spot there but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. That one pushed foul out of play off to the left. [Music] [Applause] Nope. Outside [Applause] swing. Get a ball popped up. Turner should have it. drops into the glove and that ends the inning. Padres’s go down quietly. Our score holds at five apiece. And we’re back top six. And stepping in is the speedy Bryson Stock in the air. left field down the line and that is a foul ball in the air right field. Tatis after it calls it in for the owl. The center fielder number 16. And digging in for Philadelphia, Brandon March. One for two. Out in front with the swing. And that is strike one. Activity in the bullpen. Jason Adams getting loose out there. a lefthander, also throwing. Base is empty, one away. And we’re the top half of the sixth. And look out. That one gets him. The second man he’s plunked in this one. So the lineup flips over. Trey Turner stands in for the Phillies. Mer [Applause] throw to first and he dives back in safely. [Applause] First pitch misses. [Applause] Runner on the go. Strike in there. Throw. Save. And the go-ahead run is now in scoring position. [Applause] And a count one and two. [Applause] and a swinging miss now 21 and Chris that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base and the defense brea relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play but that’s how you do it keep him off balance get him out of there and deal with the next guy Kyle Schwarber stands in for the Phillies that misses to the zone. Ball one. [Applause] Marsh on its second with two down [Applause] and it finds its way through for a hit. Here comes the throw. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Well, he comes through clutch with the RBI single. That was big. He wasn’t able to elevate it, but he put a great swing on it. Right on time, good balanced approach, and just blasted it through the infield. Two outs, runner on first. Bryce Harper to the plate, one for three. Top of the zone, and it’s called a strike. [Applause] 01 gets a check swing. Appeal to third and no swing says Joe McDonald. The one-1 in the air out towards right center. touches down. That’s a hit. And now first and second with two outs. Now batting. Here comes the skipper. And we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Number 66 out of the game. And the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Now pitching for so the Padres’s with a new arm on the mound. Nick Petta and he’s been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year. Typically at least one in inning so he’ll be tough to get to. [Applause] So up next, Alec Bow and the first pitch misses for ball one. Two aboard, two outs. [Applause] And that is out of play. Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going out there and doing damage with it. swinging a miss and he struck him out. That ends the inning and they limit the damage, but they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s tightened up a bit at 65 now. Back now for the bottom of the sixth. And there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Christopher Sanchez. Still a lot of game left and this game could go either way. So this is a big opportunity for him to get some important outs and try to help carry this lead into the later innings. One game now at the plate. Bogard. And that’s the inside edge. One and0 action in the pen down there. Joe Ross, the veteran right-hander, appears to be loosening up. [Applause] And that drops in for a strike. Well, that’s really the money spot down and away. If you can locate that consistently, it’s going to be real tough for hitters to square that up. That’s what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen. That one lifted to left. Takes it in for the out. Now batting the center fielder, Jackson Jackson Merrill the next up for the Padres’s. You know, this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher. What you tell yourself is I want to stay square to the plate. Try to hit the ball over the shortstop’s head. One, no strike. Misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. No strike. The two is in for a strike. Two balls, one strike. Fouls one off out of play. Back to our left. Home team down a run here in the bottom of the six. Blinded into right. Castanos makes the catch and there’s two down. The batter number seven, shortstop. Mosaic Glacius. The next up for the Padres’s Glacius goes 5′ 11 in 195 lbs. He joined the team as a free agent. The shorts stop takes the ball. Next offering is fouled back just outside two and two. Just missing off the plate there according to the umpire and out there on the mound maybe trying to get an explanation. Can’t say he’s convinced but it looks like he’s accepted it. [Music] Flying drive and that’s a base hit out into center field. So a two out knock keeps the inning alive. Everything was on time and fluid in that swing. Got a pitch he could get the barrel on and lined it into center for the knock. Those always feel good. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. Jake Croninworth the next up for the Padres’s. Here’s the pitch. Runner goes. Ball misses. Throw to second. Out at second. That ends the inning. The catcher definitely looked ready for that stolen base attempt. Got in position quickly and a strike down to second base to end the inning. Back here in San Diego. Top of inning number seven. And now Nick Castanos. Close but called a ball. Ball one. Counts one and0. And the sweeper is off the plate out towards right center field. Tatis, brings it in. And there’s one away. [Applause] The batter, the left fielder, Max Kepler. Here’s the left fielder, Max Kepler. Three for three, two singles and a homer. All right, San Diego. First pitch and he just misses. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So, it’s a good take by him. [Applause] Just missed. Next offering is fouled back. [Music] One down. Base is empty. That’s off the mark. Three and two now. Outside and that is ball four. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. One down. Here’s JT. Real Muto for three in this one. That’s in there. And that is strike one. One-run game. One out, one on. Swinging a foul out of play. And the sweeper misses and a good eye there. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. Pitch misses inside and now it’s three and two. At this point in the game, you cannot issue free passes. He’s going to have to challenge this hitter. Hitter’s got to be ready to swing it. Now a fly ball to right center. Tatis moving under it and there’s two away. The batter number five, second base. And now for the Phillies, Bryson Stock. We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it. But pushing the offense aside for just a second, Chris, it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most and another ball. Well, he gets to balls that get by most people at that position. Just really impressive because there are certain times the ball comes off the bat automatically that team that hit it thinks that they’ve got a base. Well, we’ll hold that thought as that’s the third out and we’ll end the inning. One left for Philadelphia. They lead it. However, it’s 6-5. Now pitching for we’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Joe Ross on for the 30th time this year. Now it’s the second base, the second base. And what makes him even quicker is the fact that he’s so dialed in on the pitch as it’s moving through the hitting zone. He can see how that hitter’s lined up, what he’s trying to do, and where that pitch is going to end up, which gives him that really quick first step. And that’s why he makes so many great plays. looking to get the tying run on base. Oh, that’s just out. That missed by a lot. And the count two and one. [Applause] Swing and a ball driven out to center on the move. Racing back. Pulls it in on the warning track. Now batting the catcher. Now here is Elias Diaz. And that one fouled off [Music] [Applause] on the ground right side slinging it to first in time. Well, there’s a lot riding on that at bat right there. Nice job of the pitcher to bear down, make the pitch, get the ground ball. Excellent piece of work. And the batter will be Fernando Tatis Jr. [Music] And that one in the air center field. Marsh moves under it. He’s got it. And that’ll end the inning. Now pitching from welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Adrien Moromeri, this guy’s a strikethrower. He’s done an excellent job of avoiding walks so far this season. Brandon Mars getting ready to hit the center fielder number 16, Brandon March. misses off the plate and it’s one and0. Fouled off. He was late. Swing and a line drive. That’s a base hit into right field. Man aboard on the leadoff single. [Music] The batter. Solid swing from start to end. On time with everything. Really good balance. Nice extension. And he met it out front for the line drive knock. So back to the top of the order. Pierce Trey Turner. That’s in for a strike. Marsh gets his lead at first with nobody out. And he’s down 02 as he swings through it. Double barreled action in the bullpen. Yuki Matsui the lefty looks to be getting himself ready. Adam the right-hander loosening up as well. 0 and two now. The shorts stop takes the ball and a foul ball. He stays alive. Nobody out. runner at first. Foul ball still a one and two count on the ground right side and that’s just fouled. Next offering is outside. Well, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. Ninth pitch of the at bat. do next on the ground right side. Four, six out, three, but it’s not in time and they just get one. The batter, the designated hitter, Kyle Schwarber. Next to hit, Kyle Schwarber. Got to be careful with a slugger like this because he can turn it into a three-run game in the blink of an eye. Now snap throw to first and Turner’s back in. If it were an average catcher behind the plate, I’d say take second base, but this isn’t a catcher you want to run on. His quick release is unreal. Swinging a popup to Glacius calls it in. Two away. [Applause] So Harper stands in number three Bryce Harperated. Called strike right there. If he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. Go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch. Next offering is downstairs. The 1-1 is fouled off. [Applause] And ring him up, says Carl Dixon. That’s a strike out. Philly strand one as it remains a 65 ball game. [Applause] Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Tanner Banks. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Lisa, the first baseman, Luis Alz. And a slider in there for a strike. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Jordan Romano, the closer of the staff, is throwing. Yeah, a slider misses down and away. One and one. [Applause] Next pitch is downstairs. [Applause] They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. And the tying run is on base. Oh, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer it. Now he has something to worry about overnight. Here’s Manny Machado 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. [Applause] And the first pitch misses for ball one. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. Very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with [Applause] out to short and that one finds its way through. Going to go ahead and run his on base. Well, that guy had a lot of pressure riding on it. So, really great job coming through right there. It’s got to feel good. He kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit, but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock. And he’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole. And now a crucial opportunity to tie up this game with another base hit. And now Gavin Sheets [Applause] bunts it in the air, squeezes it, and there’s one down. Up next for the Padres, the designated hitter, Xander. And a dangerous hitter coming up to hit in Xander Bogarts. [Applause] Ball one to Bogarts. Well, this is a critical spot for both the pitcher and the hitter. You can learn a lot about a guy by how he handles these pressure situations. [Applause] in the air on the infield. And the infield fly is called, the center fielder number three, Jackson Merrill. Jackson Merrill steps to the plate in a clutch situation. This is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation. Yeah, boo. Not sure what the numbers say, but clearly an at bat that could change the course of this game dramatically. Rolled softly, but that goes fouled. [Applause] Yeah, that’s fouled off. He’s falling behind in a huge spot. Boo. Got to do what it takes to come through. Maybe choke up on the bat a little bit. Spread out those feet. Whatever it takes. [Applause] One ball, two strike. Big spot. Two out. Both the tying and go ahead runs are aboard inside. Two and two. [Applause] Fights it off. He’ll see another. [Applause] Comes a two- two. Back to the mound. He’s got it. Tosses to first. Inning over. That’s a crucial missed opportunity. Padres’s leave a pair. This one remains close. 65. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Jason Adams. Pretty tight game. So, they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Well, one-run game and now it’s going to be Alec Bow. First pitch just misses. Adam, a 63 righty, 33 years old, and he’s one of the few players in Major League Baseball born in Kansas. [Applause] that catches the outside corner and it’s one and one. Well, at that velocity, if that’s all you’re seeing, 88, you can handle that all day long. That’s what you get in batting practice. But off the velocity of the fast ball, that is a very tough pitch to adjust to that misses. Two and two. Two balls, two strikes. [Applause] Lifted in the air right center field. Merrill on the move to the gap. Pulls it in and there’s one away. Every day during batting practice, these outfielders get about 10 minutes of balls in the gaps. They practice this and when the game comes, they make the play perfectly. [Applause] Castiano the next to hit takes ball one. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to but that kind of velocity you’d prefer that pitcher work away. [Applause] and the one. Hey, [Applause] swing in a ball line to center. Merryill pulls that one down out number two. Now batting the left fieldielder, Max Kepler stands in for the Phillies. He’s already homered here in this one [Applause] and first offering is fouled off. Not looking like they’ll be adding any insurance runs heading into the bottom of the ninth. So, it’s going to be on the bullpen to hold this lead. [Applause] Comes up empty. That’s strike two. It might be time to choke up a little bit. Get that front foot down early. Maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. And that’s outside. Two straight crowd locked in right now. One-run game here in the ninth. [Applause] That one not close. And it’s two and two. [Applause] Cuts and misses. It’s a strikeout. Three up, three down for him there. Bottom part of the order. 789. Two up in inning number nine. It’s the Philly six, Padres’s five. Back now. And on the mound, a closer Jordan Romano. And he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits, period. Romano stepping in for San Diego, Jose Glacius. Jose Glacius inside just missed. That two seam fast ball is usually coupled with a slider away. And when a hitter’s conscious of the pitch in, it’s hard for him to cover middle away. And that’s where a pitcher can really finish off that batter. One-run game, bottom nine, up the middle. And that one finds its way through. Having himself a really nice game at the plate. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. And now let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. So digging in now for San Diego, Jake Cronin work on the outside corner and that’s strike one. [Applause] And that catches the low inside corner. Good fast ball with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Swing and a miss. Handcuffed him with that slider and one gone. Oh, there he gets the slider in on his hands and it just eats him off. You know, it’s hard to get the bat around on a pitch like that tight. You just feel like crowded on the inside part of the plate. Can’t get any extension. That’s one he definitely should have laid off of. He’s two outs away. And now Elias Diaz. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get in scoring position. [Applause] And there’s a strike. Good heater at 98. So many hard throwing relievers in the game these days. You would think that hitters have made the adjustment, but I don’t know if you ever get used to it. Just pumping gas out of the bullpen. So hard to play catchup. Harper to second. That’s a double play. The ball game is over. Any day of the week, a pitcher will take two for one. Nice double play to get him out of the jam. They get the W. Way to go, guys. 65 the final here today for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB The Show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon. Let’s move.
