Into the All Star Break ..the Milwaukee Brewers Among MLB’s Elite

Let’s face it, when some of us saw the lineup this morning, whether you’re driving to the ballpark or you’re sitting at home or, you know, you watch the game and you saw the Brewers put out their old Sunday lineup, I wasn’t happy about it either. The Sunday lineup, you know what the Sunday lineup is? the lineup that uh where the Brewers win the first two games of the series and then comes that afternoon game either on a Sunday or a Wednesday or Thursday and the Brewers just like rest everybody. Well, that was the case, but the Sunday lineup comes up a winner. Comes up a winner. Guess we should never doubt these guys. We’ll talk about all that coming up next. The Brewers, no doubt, one of the best teams in baseball right now. You can’t deny that. We’ll get to that next here on Locked on Brewers. You are Locked on Brewers, your daily Milwaukee Brewers podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network. Your team every day. Buddy of mine was driving to the ballpark as I was driving in sitting shotgun and uh checked my text and he writes me, he says, “Uh, man, the Brewers are minus 270 today.” Minus 270. I said, “Yeah, it’s a lot. big price. What do you what do you expect? I mean, the Brewers are playing with some of the best baseball uh right now in MLB. Why would you What else would you expect? Um why would you bet against them? And he goes, “Oh, I am. I’m taking Washington today.” I said, “You got to be an idiot. I mean, what are you doing? That’s that’s free money.” Said, “I’m going.” He goes, “I’m going right down the casino. I’m betting Washington. Brewers aren’t taking three in a row.” I said, “Man, have you seen the Brewers under Murphy?” You can’t You never go against them. You’re a fool to go against them. They’re hot. They’re they got magic. They won a game Saturday they shouldn’t have won. And yeah, I I would never bet against these guys. What are you doing? He goes, “Look at that lineup they’re throwing out there. Andrew Vaughn’s not in the lineup.” I said, “I don’t care. They’re throwing out nine guys out there wearing boxing gloves. Don’t bet against the Brewers.” I told him and I never heard back from him, but I assume he did because he never listened to me. And I was right. Brewers six and0 on this home stand. Seven in a row. They’ve won 16 games over the 500 mark and one game behind the Cubs going into the All-Star break. Good to have you along. Chuck Freeman Lockdown Brewers, part of Lockdown Podcast Network. We are your team every day. Longtime sports caster and the Brewers. Great fan of the Milwaukee Brewers. Number one team in my heart and grew up with the Brewers obviously just like many you did. Ran sever you guys at the game today on a beautiful day. What? 32,000 out there. 32,000 fans on a Sunday afternoon. I thought that was great. I mean, they weren’t giving anything away today. There was no backpacks or baseball bats or nothing. They were giving away. 32,000 came out to see the Milwaukee Brewers to see them try to extend their winning streak and see a little of this magic that we’ve been watching here for the last six, seven, eight, nine weeks, right? So, I thought that was great. 32,000. Yes, man. for for a franchise that has won nothing ever ever ever ever ever to do this for these fans to come out there and average 30,000 in the six game home stand the three with the Dodgers and a three at the Nets I thought that’s just fantastic and that’s a tribute to all you guys man the Brewers need to do this for the fans not for Bob Uker and not for anything else but for the for for the fans I heard oh they need to win a World Series for Bob Uker yeah I mean Bob was a great part of this organization. But you Brewer fans out there, man, you guys are amazing. You know, you continue to go out there and I went into the clubhouse store before the game here and I I mean that thing is just packed and they’re printing money in that place and you got it’s because of you great Brewer fans out there, man. There were be be some cities where that that place would be desolate had they not won a title. But, you know, this team is just rolling right now. And 32,000 on a Sunday afternoon just was fantastic. And uh man, our summer of fun of winning baseball continued on Sunday. Now, of course, what would it wouldn’t be a Wisconsin sports day when you know, you take a step forward and a step backward because of something that happened. In this case, an injury to Sal Freelick. I’ll get to that coming up here in a little bit. But I want to lay this on you right now. The Brewers have the fifth best record in Major League Base Baseball, the third best in the National League. And yeah, I’m I’m eyeing on the top two spots right now. And as I said before, I might have been wrong two months ago when I said they’re playing for a wild card, but all that has changed because this team is gone since May 17th. May 17th, they were 21 and 25. They were 21 and 25 going nowhere. They were on the nightly skate to nowhere and here they are 35 and 15 cents. 35 and 15 since their 56 wins they have right now. The most ever in franchise history going into the All-Star break. We never would have guessed that when they were May at May 17th when they were four under. I was just hoping by the All-Star break to be a handful of games over the 500 mark and maybe competing for this wild card spot, but man, they’re doing more than that. 35 and 15 since and 56 wins, the most in franchise history since the All-Star break. Just playing some incredible ball. I’m going to get back to, you know, Saturday. that win Saturday. I mean, bedum at Anam Field. That three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning. Caleb Durban. Yeah, Caleb Durban, a guy who I don’t think should be playing third base. I like him better at second with his size, but Caleb Durban, I mean, so far what I see from this guy, and I’m still going to let it marinate because only half a year, the guy’s a gamer and obviously Murphy loves him. Three walk-offs so far this year. And I know, yeah, off seasonason I I’ll admit to that, too. I just And I’m not like saying Durban’s having an all-star type year, but he’s been coming up with some big at bats for these guys. And that’s what I look at, too. You know, you look at the overall numbers. Yeah, they’re not great, but he’s had some big ats. He had the walk-off home run, you know, a couple of weeks ago. He had um, you know, he had the walk-off base hit on Saturday. He had another walk-off base hit. I think he’s had all three of these here during this 35 and 15 stretch. the Brewers are on. So, yeah, Caleb Durban has proven he’s belonged so far through a half a year. I just don’t know what his position is yet. I don’t know if it’s third base. I’d like to see some movement around that infield, but that’s for a later date. But as of right now, he’s the third baseman. It was not in the lineup initially on Sunday. So, uh Durban with the walk-off and that place is electrified and the Brewers come right back on Sunday and get an 8 to1 win. score three runs in the second. And then in the eighth inning, Jackson Cheurio three-run home run. Terang a solo shot. Uh for Churio, that’s his 16th of the season. And that one put it out of reach. It was it was a 3-1 game at that point. And then Cheurio unloads a bomb to right field. And uh Trevor McIll, who was up at the bullpen warming up, h took a seat and he didn’t need him anymore. Anytime you could throw uh Eastston McGee in for your ninth inning, okay, with an eight to1 lead, that’s a good thing. So, just incredible. I I’m speechless, man, that what these guys have done coming off sweeping the Dodgers. Coming off sweeping the Dodgers, the Brewers did not have a let down against Washington. They thumped them on Friday night. you know, dug themselves a hole Saturday, rally to one, and then win this one going away. Oh, did I mention Freddy Peralta? Yes, Freddy Peralta. 11 wins. Just having a great year. Allstar year. You could argue maybe he should have been starting the All-Star game for the National League. He’s not going to pitch because he pitched today. Uh didn’t allow hit until the sixth inning. crowd. Of course, the great crowd gave him a couple of standing ovations. One after he well, there was kind of a sitting ovation after he um had the no hit bid. I don’t know if you want to call it a no hit bid in the sixth inning, but after that happened and then when he got taken out of uh you know, out of the game uh walking to the dugout, you know, he got a big standing ovation. One thing I wish these players would do, if I can get negative real quick right here, and I don’t want to. Tim Allen mentioned this on his show several weeks ago, and I’m going to credit him first, but I’ve always thought this as well. When a pitcher gets taken out of a game, and he pitches a heck of a ball game, and the crowd rises to his feet, maybe that player should do the cap once in a while. I mean, Freddy just walked. It’s straight to the dugout. You know, show an appreciation to the fans there. You know, the pitcher, you know, hitters do that on a curtain call. Pitcher walks off the mound, goes seven innings or so and pitches his brains out on a hot afternoon. Dolph the crowd’s standing up giving you a standing ovation. Dolph your cat to them. Tip your cap. Do something. Put the hand up or something. I I I I it’s kind of a pet peeve of mine when when players do that when they just walk stoically right back to the dugout even after a great performance. All right. And probably Freddy was down because he had, you know, struggled a little bit there, but St. Freelick on a diving catch in right field um had to be taken out of the game. The Brewers right now say it’s hamstring discomfort. Now, this is as of recording the podcast on Friday night as the Major League Baseball draft is going on. So, you might be seeing this and there might be an update on that either overnight or first thing in the morning. But, as of right now, Felix’s got hamstring discomfort. Hopefully, it’s only going to be a couple of days here and that maybe he’s going to be able to play Friday in Los Angeles. We don’t know. But they took him out of the game. Murf Murf has his favorites on this team. I think that’s no secret. Okay. Uh he has a few guys. He likes those hard-nosed guys, right? And Freelick and Terra and Durban are three of those guys. And Freelick Murphy was asked about Freelick after the game. He said, “It hurts my heart. It kind of puts a damper on this win. Put puts a damper on my day.” He said, “It hurts my heart.” He doesn’t say that about too many people. See how Freelick he did. So hopefully nothing serious. Now, when when Murphy’s talking about it hurts my heart, God, I hope it’s not nothing worse because obviously Freelick has been amazing in that leadoff spot. Just amazing defensively as well. Made a nice defensive catch out in right field toward the wall on Sunday as well. But, um, just great. That was the downside of of the day. Freelick getting hurt. But Freddy, uh, with the 11 wins right now, with the 11 wins, he is now tied with Max Freed, the Yankee Max Freed for the major league lead. How about that? Max Freed, who the Brewers saw earlier this year in New York when the Brewers got off that 0 and4 start. 0 and4 start. And who would have guessed? Here they are at 16 games over the 500 mark and 56 wins. 56 wins. Wow. 56 and 40. And that win Saturday. That was one for That was one for the ages. All right. I’m hearing some nastiness, not from Brewers fans, but from other people, players, Major League Baseball. Why The Miz got to the All-Star game. Why the Miz got him to the All-Star game. We’ll talk about that coming up next. Jacob Miserowski into the All-Star game. One of three Brewers going to the All-Star game. We’ll get to that next here on Lockdown Brewers. So, you know, Sunday nights, I mean, Sunday nights, we got the we got the Sunday scaries. You’re not looking forward to going to to work. Um, there’s nothing on TV, especially tonight. There’s no baseball. There’s nothing on TV tonight really. Well, the major league draft if you wanted to watch that. Um, so I try to drop this uh for for entertainment purposes entertainment entertainment purposes only. Uh, entertainment purposes on a uh on a Sunday night and maybe, you know, Monday morning or whatever. But, uh, that’s what I try to do. I try to get these out on Sunday night. And man, when you come back from a game like that, I just can’t wait to get back here and doing the podcast, uh, after a night like like or an afternoon like that. Uh, the Miz, first of all, congratulations out to Jacob Miserowski. This surprised me as well uh, of him getting into the All-Star game, but I said this a couple of weeks ago. If you remember, for those of you who are everyday out there, I said, “Wouldn’t it be great if Miz made the All-Star team?” Kind of like how they did with Paul Skins last year. didn’t start the year on the roster on the Pirates roster yet, was elevated to the All-Star game. Maybe they should do the same thing with Jacob Mizerowski. And this is after a couple of starts. It’d be cool if he kept on go said if he kept on going like this, maybe after a few starts, they put him on there. And sure enough, somehow he made him he made his way on. Now, there’s reports that there were a few other players that were asked uh 10 12 other pitchers that were asked to be on the All-Star team. They turned it down. Now, now you’re going to ask me right off the top, should Miserowski be on the All-Star team? And I’ll say yes. I’ll say absolutely yes. And Yelich, I agree with Yeliches. What Yelich said today was he said, you know, it’s an entertainment business. Basically, you’re marketing. It’s an entertainment thing. If you want to market your game, yeah, the M Miserowski maybe hasn’t had a lot of starts, but he Yes, I I would put him in the All-Star game. And certainly, yes, put him in the game. You’re trying again, Major League Baseball. I think it sounds like maybe they’re trying to get it a little bit. I don’t know with this commissioner with this with trying to add a salary cap uh down the road and and adding the Miz that you know, you realize that you need more than seven teams winning games and those big your big markets and I know you love your big markets there, Commissioner, but you need the small market ones, too. So, the Brewers getting thrown this bone about a player uh playing a pitch playing only five games and getting to the All-Star games. A lot of people are griping about it. And of course, my first guess when I read the headline, it was like, uh, players, some players are not happy that Miserowski is going to the All-Star game. And right away, it was had to be some big mouth or two from a big market. And sure, it was the Philadelphia Phillies. Here we are. you know, big these big market teams, unless they’re handed everything on a silver platter, all right, they’re already handed everything because their owners are buying the best teams in baseball, but Trey Turner and Nick Castanos, especially Castanos, I really don’t like him. Duding off their mouths again, um that these guys that Miz is undeserving and because they feel like a couple of other guys are deserving of being in the All-Star game. You know what? When has Philadelphia not been throwing a bone like all the time? I got news for you, Castianos and Turner. Why don’t you put that energy to try to be productive in October? Okay, why don’t you why don’t you do that? You buy a pennet every year, your owner does, and you guys fail in October. Worry more about that than you should about the Brewers getting thrown a bone here and getting a player into the All-Star game. I think it’s great. And I think it’s great for the Brewers that he’s in. It is fantastic. I’m not a big All-Star game guy, you know. It’s lost a lot of it has lost its luster over the years. And then when they institute that stupid rule about the team that wins the All-Star game has homefield advantage of the World Series, that was so dumb. But you know what, Castanos and Turner, you really want to uh one of the one of them made a comment that uh the All-Star game is turning into the Savannah Bananas. Okay. Um you know what? You know, look at the game. What is a turn? What is it turning into right now without a salary cap, guys? Why don’t you focus on that? My my response if you say, “Well, it’s turning the game, the All-Star game is turning into the Savannah Bananas.” Yes, it’s an exhibition game, but still, Major League Baseball, what are you turning into without a salary cap? That’s what I’d ask him. Well, maybe we should have a salary cap in baseball. I would ask Castiano, see what he had to say about that. Oh, these guys don’t want that. I’m going off tangent here. I shouldn’t, you know, I got that big market, small market thing. I’m I’m defending the small markets and our especially the Milwaukee Brewers. Yeah, the Phillies. How many times they on Sunday baseball? Like every week nearly. The Brewers, of course, never on Never on national TV. Yeah. M. Rosski makes the All-Star team and everybody’s up in arms about it. Had it been a Yankee or a Met, nobody would have been saying anything, right? Stoodto gets handed to the added to the All-Star game. Nobody even say anything, you know, even though he’s not having the greatest of years. Miz gets added. Yeah. Right now, wouldn’t you say through five starts, Mizowski is one of the best pitchers in the National League? That’s what you got to ask yourself, too. I You want the best players there. The All-Star game, you want the best players playing in the All-Star game. Is Jacob Bizerowski one of the best pitchers in the National League right now? Well, yeah. He had 12ks against the Dodgers. He’s had he’s taking got a perfect game like into the six seventh inning. He’s had another start where he didn’t allow a hit until the sixth inning, something like that or yeah, whatever. Um I don’t have his numbers right here, but we know the track record. Miz has been phenomenal in all but one start and that was against the Mets in that second game of the double header. But Miz absolutely deserves to be the all-star game in the All-Star game. You want to grow the game or do you want to throw your same tired old guys out there? You know, this idea that every team has got to have a player, I think is stupid, too, right? I don’t I don’t like that idea. You know, let’s see the allstars there. They’re good players. And Miz looks looks the part to me. He looks the part to me. So, Castiano is Trey Turner. Two guys, big market team, you know, given every resource possible. And here in Milwaukee, we’re scratching out, you know, we’re just trying to scratch out as much as we can out of a dollar these days out of a franchise that hasn’t even been to the World Series in 42 years, 43 years. So, I don’t want to hear it from big market Philadelphia. Yeah. Dodgers, mimulated Dodgers. You wouldn’t hear anybody complaining. You wouldn’t hear anybody complaining. All right. So, good luck to Freddy, McGill, and Miserowski. Three pitchers make the All-Star team. How about that? And you know what? Three pitchers do deserve to make the All-Star team. And probably maybe even Yelich deserves to be on the All-Star team. But if you had told me before the season, who’s going to make the All-Star team on the Milwaukee Brewers? I would have said Jackson Cheerio is gonna make the All-Star team. He’ll be the loan representative probably the token loan representative that each team has got to have. Jackson will be that guy. 16 home runs. But Freddy, yeah, pitching this team pitching has got him there to six uh 16 games over the 500 mark. And I’m good with it. I’m definitely good with it. All right, we come back, we’ll uh I got the the first round draft pick is already in. I’ll talk a little bit about him. Brewers made some roster moves and I got the pitching rotation for the Dodgers all set to go. Come back after this timeout here. Chuck Freeman and Lockdown Brewers. And by the way, our podcast, you get it on Google, Spotify, Apple, wherever you download your audio podcast. We’re the number one brewers podcast on the internet because you great brewer fans. And of course, you can find me on Twitter, too. Jack Freeman. F R E I Mu N D. One thing about the Sunday lineup, which I don’t like, Andrew Vaughn’s got to be in that lineup on Sunday. The guy’s got eight RBI’s in the home stand. Hot bat, big hits in every game of this home stand. For me, it’d be tough to sit him out of a game, unless you got the All-Star break coming up. Be pretty tough to sit Andrew W. I don’t care if it’s a righty, lefty on the mound. I don’t want to hear it. Andrew Vaughn’s got to be in your lineup. But bottom of the order produced, but you got to put Andrew Vaughn, right, guys? The next big thing with the Brewers, right? All right. The Brewers did draft a first baseman. Speaking of Andrew Vaughn, Andrew Fischer out of Tennessee, uh, third B played some third base there. Some first baseman, some first base as well. um been at 34125 homers with the vows, one of the top hitters in the SEC this past year. And the Brewers a short time ago made that pick. Uh we’re going to talk more about the draft tomorrow. Dan Zalinski is going to be joining us, our draft expert. Um he’s going to draft we’ll talk all about the Brewers draft tomorrow. Talk about these high picks and all that. But Andrew Fischer is the guy who’s already in the Packer uh the Packers the Pack covering the Packer draft. The Brewers draft uh pick is the 20th pick in the first round. And Drew Fischer, that pick is already in a couple of roster moves. Easton McGee, who finished out that game in the ninth inning, it’s optioned down to AAA. Blake Perkins option to AAA out of rehab. We thought this might happen with Perkins that there was no room, but you know, Perkins will not be in TripleA very long if our guy S Freelick has got to be the on the injured list. Uh hopefully he’s not, but you know, if he’s on the injured list, Blake Perkins will be on this roster when the Brewers open up in Los Angeles coming up on Friday night. Drew Aanss was DFA several weeks ago when Aans was on the team and was like Drew was like put him like fifth in the order I believe it was. Uh the three game series coming up in LA real quickly and we’re going to have shows still all week. Um Priest is going to go Friday, Careralta Saturday, Kintana on Sunday. Little surprised that The Miz, who struck out 12 against the LA uh the first time around, is not up against LA. Maybe there’s something to that. Uh Woodruff is also uh not in this rotation. Probably going to give him a little bit more of a rest as well. And maybe Miz pitches in the All-Star game as well. And maybe that’s I I maybe they figure if he’s pitching in the All-Star game, he’s probably not going to be available to pitch this weekend against Los Angeles. But Priest Peralta Kintana, honestly, guys, you got to like whoever the Brewers throw out there. They’re playing so well. And do you realize too, the Brewers with one more win will hold the tiebreaker over Los Angeles Dodgers, right? They play six against the Dodgers. They’ve won three so far. They tie for that, you know, one of the top two spots of the National League. I’m looking way ahead. Brewers would have won the tiebreaker with the Dodgers if they take one this coming weekend, next weekend in LA against the Dodgers. Good stuff, man. It’s exciting time to be a Brewer fan, man. I’m fired up. Like I said, I couldn’t wait to get back to the mic today uh tonight to to talk about it. Um and it was fun being out there. Great day. Roof was half open uh today, but it still was nice out there. A little warm in there, but uh man, we shouldn’t be complaining because, you know, Wisconsin, the summer weather doesn’t last very long. We’ll see you all tomorrow night. Again, we’re going to talk about the Major League Baseball draft, any news that the Brewers drop during the day. On Monday, we’ll be talking about that as well because you never know what other kind of news is going to drop. Thanks everybody for listening and watching Lockdown Brewers making us your first listen to every day. Lockdown Brewers part of Lockdown Podcast Network. We are your team every day. This is Chuck Freeman. So long everybody.

  1. Pat impossible !! what did brewers this year how we start. gsme per gsme some was hard to whatch. but zi saw all games and today. was the magic of made it simple. swep after great game that so not happen before.

  2. Brewers are tied for fourth best record in baseball. It started out that we had one representative, in Peralta, for the All Star game. That's ridiculous. Then, getting Megill on the roster was 2 players for the team tied for the fourth best record. Getting Miz, or another Brewer, on the All Star roster, should have been expected.

  3. Really curious to see who will pitch in LA. I heard it will be Quintana, Priester and Cortez. If so, it will line up well for the Cubs series end July. We can pitch them with The Mizz, Big Woo and Freddie. However, having Cortez and Quintana pitch them is also okay because the Cubs are dismal vs lefties.

Me too, I was unhappy to see The Sunday line-up. Siegler was clutch, but Bauers and Monasterio were zero again, except for 1 walk, Glad to see Freddie was 'Ace Freddie"

  4. Ordered a Misiorowski jersey back in May bc I knew he was the real deal. I’ve been watching him the past 2 years in the Minors and he’s just so nasty. Jersey finally came in the mail yesterday. Lfg

  5. You can't replace Turang with Durbin at second. Brice is a Platinum Glove recipient last year. A-Rod went to third because Jeter had SS locked up. Same smart shit to do.

  6. Correct, if the fans give you appreciation… stand for you…. you should acknowledge the respect they are giving you. Only takes a second to do it. Their Agents should have coached them on basic PR.

  7. And it was only a few weeks ago the national experts were calling for the Brewers to trade Peralta. Those guys should be called out and held accountable for their nonsense.

  8. This could be bad when it comes to egos… 25 innings? I hope the kid can keep it real. All star-game went sour for me when Milwaukee hosted and bud selig couldn't change his diapers.

  9. Passed the Phillies in the standings, and Swept their asses in Philly yet these guys talking tough with almost double the payroll! Nick isn’t touching Miz and can’t wait for that matchup down the road! We are arguing for Christopher Sanchez!? Are you joking?!
