🔴LIVE 🔴 New York Yankees VS Atlanta Braves/July 18/Major League Baseball/MLB THE SHOW 25

All right, just about set to go and starting this one, Joey Wentz. Chris, how about a scouting report? Yeah, he’s definitely had a struggle so far this year as evidenced by that inflated whip, but he’s going to have to find a way to limit the base runners, put his team in a position to win a ball game. So, we know he’s prepared. We know this guy is a competitor, and we’ll watch how he works in this one. And stepping in for the Yankees, Paul Goldmid. There’s the strike up high. And that’s how this game gets started. First pitch 716. [Applause] Next offering is down low and a count even one and one. Swinging a ground ball. Throw picked it first. Got him. And time now to check out the New York Yankees lineup. It features a great veteran presence, John Carlos Stanton. Oh, he’s just been a consistent and dominant power threat throughout his career. I mean, over 400 career home runs. I mean, that just doesn’t happen to an average power hitter. This guy’s been elite and we’ll see as he continues uh if he’s going to make it into Coopertown into the Hall of Fame. And first offering is fouled off. Bellinger is an interesting example when you talk about scouting and development. I mean, this is a guy now that has turned into one of the premier power hitters in the sport. He was a fourthround pick out of Hamilton High School in Chandler, Arizona in 2013. He hit one homer his senior year. Man at first with one gone. Now the batter now Aaron Judge that pitch in for a strike and one strike. It’s a double play for crying out loud. Judge waits. Man at first. One away now. Snap throw to first. Bellinger dives back. Come on. A little out front there as he swings through it. Chopper right side. Judge out on the play. Batting fourth, the designated hitter, Jean Carlos Stanton. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position. John Carlos Stanton stepping in now for the Yankees. Joey, there’s a strike. Braves. That one finds the zone. And that’s strike two. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. Up and in. And the count is one and two. O2 fast ball way out of the zone. I think he’s trying to speed him up. Got to stay back. Off speed’s probably coming. Foul ball still a one and two count. Man on second, two down. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. No runs, one hit, no errors, and a man left. And now the Braves with their first chance to hit were scoreless. Back here with my pal Singi and today’s starter Luke Weaver. And Chris, pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him. Yeah. And you don’t want to be too quick to say that he can’t pitch on the road. Sometimes, you know, it’s just a matter of luck. It’s not having a feel difference between the bullpin mound to the mound out there on the playing field. Don’t know what it is, but I know this. He’s got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home. So, we’ll see what he’s able to do in this one. Jurgson Proofar, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. All right, get back into it. And the righty deals. You see the velocity 97 with that fast ball. Let’s go. Proofar gets a piece there. That one in the dirt. Two and two. Fights it off. You’ll see another [Applause] swings through it and that’s a strike out. Here’s Matt Olsen. [Music] There’s the strike. Not many. Come on. One down. Base is empty. That’s down and in. One ball, one strike. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Come on. Here’s the pitch to Olsen. Good eye right there. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. One out. Base is empty. This one in the air center field. Bellinger under it. He’s there. He’s got it. And there are two outs. Here’s Brian Snickers lineup for the Braves. This group was shut out their last game. So, we’re going to see if they can bounce back with a better effort here today. And Boo, it can get in your head a little bit when you get shut out. You’re frustrated. You’re seeing that consecutive streak of innings you haven’t scored. And you want to get off to a great start. Score early because if you don’t, you feel like it could linger into two consecutive games, which no one wants to be a part of. Ronald Akuna Jr. in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Two outs, space is empty. Let’s go. The next offering misses and the count is one and one. Next offering is fouled back. All right. Two down. Nobody on fights that one away. Still one and two. on the outside corner. Got him looking. Braves are set down. One, two, three. We played an inning. No score. All set for the start of the inning. And here is Jazz Chisum Jr. Chisum Jun. Wentz back to work and ball one. Was a good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, you had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Called strike right there. Backto-back fast balls in that last one. Called for a strike. Probably go away, but look for him to come back in there to try to finish you off. Swing and a miss as he was out front. It’s a good change up to hit up in the zone. I don’t think he recognized it. I’m sure he’d love to have that one back. [Applause] in the air left field. Ozuna ranging after it and puts the squeeze on that one and there’s one away. Batting six, left fielder Jason Dominguez. Jason Dominguez now at the plate. He’s going to finish with a new careerhigh in stolen bases. Chris delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Looks like he’s just sizing him up there. Really good pitch to hit, but he took it all the way. Sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game. That may be a pitch that he turns on. And that’s downed away. No score here in the second. Swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field. Under it is auna to make the grab. And there’s two down. [Applause] Two outs. Space is empty. And next for New York, Anthony Vulpi. And first offering is fouled off. Top of the zone for a called strike. Come on. Come on. And a pop up right side. Foul territory. Olsen makes the catch and that’ll do it. Nothing across here this half. We go to the bottom of inning number two. We’re tied nothing. Nothing back here in Atlanta. So here’s Murphy now. Sean Murphy. Let’s go. Come on. There’s the strike. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. That one lifted to left. Hauls it in for the out. One down. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. Marcelo Zuna now at the plate as he swings through strike one [Music] swaying a ball driven out to center. Bellinger drop step going back way back out of here. That should put a jolt into this home crowd. His second homer of this series. And they jump out front. It’s one- nothing. Two pitches, two swings. That one for a home run. Looking to be aggressive all the way. And it paid off for him in a big way. [Applause] Boo. I wasn’t sure he hit that one as hard as he needed to to get it out of here, but it had just enough behind it for the homer. What an attempt at the wall though. He really gave a terrific effort to try and bring that one back. And here comes Azie Alb’s to the dish. [Applause] And that one fouled off [Music] One down. Base is empty. Hammered down the right side but foul. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. [Applause] One out, base is empty and a run in. Bottom half of inning number two. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. Here we go. And that skips in the dirt. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. [Applause] And there’s a ball. Let’s do it. Next pitch is outside. [Applause] ripped on a line. That’s a hit. He saw a lot of pitches in that at bat and found a way to win the battle. Well, wore him down after an extended played appearance. It ends with a knock. At that point in a bat for a hitter when you’ve seen that many pitches, you’ve gotten a look, you’ve fouled off pitches. So, the confidence level is extremely high. And it seems like when you go that deep into a bat, the hitter usually comes out on top. [Applause] [Applause] Nacho Alvarez Jr. in the box with one away as he takes ball one. In there at the knees and a count one and one that one fouled off. clearly trying to stay back a little bit longer for that change up as he fells that fast ball back. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. That K is his third of the game. Oh, I’m not sure what he was waiting on right there. He got the change up and still laid on it. You rarely see that. It almost makes you think that he was trying to set the pitcher up. I mean, if you can’t catch up to the off speed stuff, there’s no way you’re going to touch a fast ball. And next for Atlanta, Michael Harris II. That one finds the zone. It’s 0 and one. swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Welts makes the play and the inning is over, but they’re off to a good start as they pick up a run on this solo shot. It’s now one- nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back at Truis Park. New inning getting started. And now the catcher comes up to him. Austin Wells that one close rule to ball. Ball one. There’s a strike. That’s excellent location on the fast ball right there early in this game. If he can do that all game, should be a good outing for him. Pop jump. Alby’s settles underneath it and out. Number one on the grab. Batty night. Third base Oswalt PZA. Oswald PZA stepping in now for the Yankees. Come on. Hard hit right side. Alb’s over to first in time and a couple of quick outs. Up next for the Yankees, first base Paul Goldman. Back to the top of the lineup and Paul Goldmid will come up to hit. Grounded out his first time. Goldie in his 14th season, 37 years young, and he was drafted in the eighth round back in 2009. And that’s through there for a strike. 0 and one. This guy is just filling up the strike zone right now. Don’t want to get yourself in an 02 hole. You better be ready to pull the trigger on the first pitch. Off the mark there. One and one. [Music] this to third. Alvarez, let’s go. Get on your horse. Throws across the diamond and the Yanks go quietly. Down in order go the Yankees. They’re down one- nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark as we go to the last of the third and the batter will be the shortstop Nick Allen. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side makes the catch and there’s one gone. Now batting designated hitter Jerickson Proar. Here’s Proar down. And that drops in for a strike. He’s a bad ball hitter, so even if you get him to chase pitches outside the zone, he still might beat you. Not an easy out by any means. Next offering is in for a strike. checks his swing, appealed to third and he held back according to Rusty Valentine. That’s outside. Two balls, two strikes. One down, base is empty. Spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another to the right side, Chisum. And two straight set down to begin the bottom of the third. Now batting first baseman, M. Two down, base is empty. Matt Olsen next up for the Braves. Fly to center. His first time. He’s 0 for one. That one pushed foul. [Laughter] And that one pulled foul. Though Chris through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. Got him. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. So they go quietly there. Three innings complete. It’s the Braves one and the Yankees nothing. And we’re back. John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Cody Bellinger. Let’s do it. This one in the air. Albz settles under this one. He’s got it. And a quick out number one. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. And now big number 99, Aaron Judge grounded out his first time. Well, in terms of hitting rocket home runs, Judge is near the top of that list. Only John Carlos Stanton has hit more with greater exit velocity than Judge. Look out though, show is quickly climbing those charts. this to third. Tosses to first and that quickly two away. Now batting the designated hitter, Jean Carlos. Now here’s John Carlos Stanton. He struck out swinging at his first atbat. That’s outside and that’s ball one. Right through there for a strike. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. And a foul ball. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Sea strikes him out for the second time today. Three up, three down that time. And midway in the fourth, it’s the Braves one and the Yankees nothing. Back here in Atlanta, ready to go. Bottom four. And here is Ronald Akuna Jr. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. activity in the bullpen. Will Warren getting loose out there for Aaron Boon number 31 also throwing. Next offering is in for a strike. He’s been pitching well, but we’ll see what kind of adjustment the hitters make this second time through the order. We’ll know if he’s got really good stuff in this one or not. That misses and it’s two and one. Two-1 misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. Here’s an opportunity to do some damage and perhaps unlock this offense. 3-1 count. Be ready to turn on a fast ball. That one misses. So a lead off walk up next for the And here comes the Yankees manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Luke Weaver is done. And that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today. Gave him some length. Back with a new arm after this. Now pitching number 31 on a pitch out of the pen here. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpin can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Here’s Shawn Murphy fly to left his first time. Come down. Here we go. Fast for a strike. Akuna gets his lead at first with nobody out. In the air, foul off first. Goldie pulls it down and there’s one down. Up next for the Braves, leftielder Marcel. Marcelo Zuna coming up to hit. He’s already homered in this game. [Music] To the left side, but it is well foul. Yo, one that’s outside. And there’s a foul ball. A change up missing and it’s two and two. [Applause] That one drifts inside. Well, he’s not afraid to fall into a two- strike count. Knows the strike zone very well. So much so that I think umpires will look at him and determine whether it’s a ball or strike if he swings or not. And ball four, two aboard. A great back and forth in that at bat. He had to lay off some really close pitches and somehow Boogie found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there. I’ll tell you right now, I couldn’t have done it. Albz stands in here. Takes ball one low. Good miss with that change up away. He needs a ball on the ground for a double play. Minimize the potential threat right here on the hitter side. Nice job of laying off that pitch. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. Here’s a 1-1. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. Runners at first and second with one gone. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Swang and a ball lifted in the air. Bellinger coming on. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s two down. Now batting number 19. Now in for the Braves. Nacho Alvarez Jr. struck out swinging his first time. Pulls that one foul. Look out. That ball was smoked. Man, I am so relieved that they have this netting down the lines just ensures safety for the fans. Line drive. That’s a base hit. Run comes in from second and they take a two-run lead. Picks himself up an RBI. Off the bat, it was headed for the gap all the way. And as a hitter, you love seeing those as you take your first couple of steps out of the box. You know you got some real estate to run on. And such a good feeling. Nice liner into the gap right there. First and second, two outs. Michael Harris the second. Next up for the Braves and misses inside. Two on, two outs. [Applause] Swinging a foul straight back. [Applause] The 1-1. Line drive. Base hit coming home. The throw in. It’s off the mark and he scores. Backto back base hits. Everything was on time and fluid in that swing. got a pitch he could get the barrel on and lined it into center for the knock. Those always feel good. First and second, two down. Now it’s the shortstop. Nick Allen 0 for one so far. And that one just misses a ball and no strikes. First and second, two down. Had a breaking ball misses outside. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. And a foul ball makes the count. Two and one. [Music] bows that off to the left and will do it again. Two outs, couple of base runners at first and second. gets a piece and stays alive. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Swing and a miss. And that is that. So, two runs in the inning on two hits. No errors, but two are left stranded. We played four. It’s the Braves three and the Yankees nothing. We go to the top of the fifth. Here’s the second baseman. Jazz Chisum Jr. Chisum Jr. Wentz back to work. There’s the strike. Well, the offense has gotten going and a pitcher wants to go out there, have a real quick inning, get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay hot. Strike two. He’s trying to stay away from this lefty, knowing that a lot of left-handers like the ball down and in. Going two now. And that just misses. swing and a pop off in foul ground. Alvarez makes the grab. One away. Now batting left fielder Jason Dominguez. Now it’s the switchhitting outfielder Jason Dominguez. Fly to right his first time. Let’s go in for a strike and it’s 0 and one. Hard ground ball base now. And they have their first base runner since the first inning. Now batting only two hits allowed so far tonight, Boog. So I don’t think that one will disrupt his momentum all that much. You know, he’s really been on top of his game, commanding his pitches all night long. One gone runner at first. Anthony Vulpi the next to hit. And that one is inside. Let’s get it going. Braves. Next offering is in for a strike. Good approach right there. You want to get something just a little higher that you can elevate. Stay out of that double play. Step off. Throw to first. Dominguez back in on a dive. [Music] The kick and the pitch. Runner goes. That’s in for a strike. It’s safe. It’s a stolen base. Dominguez the runner at second with one away. And that’s ripped into left. Base hit. Doesn’t stop. Heads for home. The throw is offline and he’s in to score. It’s 3-1. Oh, that was a great job of letting that runner steal second base. Get into scoring position. Come through with the base knock. You add a run. Here’s the power hitting catcher, Austin Wells. Fried out his first time. And that’s outside. That’s a ball that’s inside. Movement in the Atlanta bullpen. Jesse Chavez getting loose out there. Cox getting cranked up as well. One run across in the frame so far. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Slides, but it gets by him. Vulpey around second. Headed for third. Not in time. He’s safe. Man, those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever. Such a good feeling. Smash that one through the infield for the knock. When it’s hit that hard, it makes it very tough on the infielders to make any sort of play. Now, the third baseman, Oswald PZA, rolled out to second in his first at bat. [Applause] At the dish, looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning ending double play, boo. Next one is off the plate and that’s ball one. First and third, one down. to Alb’s double play. What a twin killing to end the inning. But the RBI single pushes across a run and this is now a 31 ball game. Major League Baseball is on the show. Back at Truis Park ready to go for the last half of the inning. Proar climbs in on that left side. And the first pitch misses for ball one. You know, these Braves digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. They’ve hit seven line drives already. And even though some of them have been for outs, there’s nothing wrong with delivering consistent hard contact. That’s almost always going to lead to positive results. Off the mark there now. Two balls in a strike. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. Now, just a cement mixer slider right there. It’s a great pitch to hit if you can recognize it early and jump on it. Breaks his bat and pops it up. Throw not in time. It’s an unlikely infield single. Did a nice job getting there. Good throw, but very difficult to get anybody on that one as far as you had to go and throw, you know. Yeah, no question. At first and now it’s Matt Olsen’s turn to hit. Go for two in this one. In there for strike one. Nobody out. Runner at first. Swing at a ball lifted to center field. Bellinger snags it and there’s one down. Now batting right fielder Ronald Akuna Jr. And here is Ronald Akuna Jr. He is struck out and he is walked. [Applause] Just missed. [Applause] One on the ground is short. Could be two. Off balance feed. There’s one. And that’s two. One hit in the inning, but no one left. We’re through five. It’s the Braves three and the Yankees won. Here comes a new arm for the Braves, Jesse Chavez. And this is an important part of this game. Tight score and still a lot of outs to get. So they’re looking for a big outing out of him right here to get some critical outs. Chavez Paul Goldmid. Now he’s grounded out a couple of times. Paul Goldid. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Dylan Lee, the young lefty, looks to be getting himself ready. Hernandez warming up as well. And another ball right now behind in the count. Two balls and no strikes. No free passes. You can’t allow that. Right through there for a strike. Well, in this one, the offense has sputtered. Somebody’s got to find a way to get on, keep the line moving, and manufacture at least one run. Then maybe you get two or three. And the swinging to miss. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it in there. Got him looking. And that one split the plate. And here comes Bellinger struggling on the road this season. Better results at home. Bellinger goes 6′ 3 in 29 years old and they went out and made a trade for him last season. One down, base is empty and downstairs. All right. Check. Swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Very strong coming out of the pin so far as he punches out the first two batters he’s faced in this one. Getting straight to work. Man, it’s talked about a lot, but relievers are just so electric these days. He’s having fun at bats if you’re a hitter. And I’m so glad I’m retired. Here is Aaron Judge. He gets a shot right here against the righty and he is elite against right-handed pitching. The contact, the average and delivers the slug. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top half of the sixth. And ball one to Judge. Well, this manager knows that his players are just trying to do too much. Everybody needs to just take a deep breath, relax, and let it naturally happen. Two outs. Judge rips that one, reaching for it and brings it in. So, no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. To the bottom of the six we go. 456 coming up. It’s the Braves three and the Yankees won. Bottom of the sixth inning. Now the Atlanta cleanup hitter Shawn Murphy. Murphy. The pitch. And that’s too high. Highf fly ball pretty well struck out towards right center. That’s back. Got all of that one. That’s his fourth home run of the series. And they boost their lead. It’s 4-1. [Applause] That’s an impressive swing of the bat to go over the wall to the opposite field gap. And you know, there are a lot of guys that just don’t have the pop to do that. And probably just as many who don’t have the approach either. He let that ball travel and he got great extension on the follow through to drive it out of here. And here comes the Yankees manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Number 31 won’t go any further. It’s a three-run game, and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. Out of the bullpen for the Yankees, Will Warren. He last pitched four days ago, so he should feel pretty fresh. Will Warren. Here comes Ozuna up to the plate. Fast is outside. Always exciting to see a laid-off home run in an inning. Kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in here in the bottom of the six. Next offering upstairs. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound in this situation ahead 20. He’s put himself in a really good spot. Here’s a 200. In today’s game, not that many fast ball counts, but hitters still in the back of their minds, they’re looking for one. Two change up call right there. Excellent pitch selection to go with. Fouls one off. Two and two. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Swing and a high-fly ball left field. Dominguez sizes this one up and there’s one down. Now batting second base. Here is Aussie Alb’s up to hit. One for two. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Movement in the bullpen. Jonathan Loisa getting loose out there for Aaron Boon. Deal. One a big swing and a miss. No balls. Two strikes. Fouls it back with two strikes. battling here as he fouls it away. The O2 knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. That one just misses. started to go at the one two. A check on it to third. Nope, he held back. Still two and two after the foul ball. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. Nacho Alvarez Jr. will hit next. Next offering popped in the air right field. Come on now. Makes the grab and that’ll end the inning. Braves get one on the big fly. It’s now 4-1. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Dylan Lee. And he’s been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year. Typically at least one in innings, so he’ll be tough to get to. John Carlos Stanton to the plate now. the designated hitter, Jean Carlos Stanton. That one ripped. That’s back there. And that one hops the wall. Oh, that started and ended pretty quickly. No messing around right there. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. Jazz Chisum Jr. Now that’s inside and it’s one and0. Now these guys definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. Next offering is fouled back. The Yankees looking to rally out of the ground to third. And that’s a fair ball. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Couple of singles back to back. Just a simple ground ball the other way that had eyes on it. Man, sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. Really important at bat coming up now. Here’s the left fielder, Jason Dominguez. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. The tying run at the plate. Swing and a miss and a count is 0 and two. There’s a certain point where you have to commit to what you think you see and he guessed wrong right there. Nasty slider with just terrific bite at the end. [Applause] Tying run at the plate. Good job to fight that one off. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. He hasn’t gotten the result yet, but he’s got to feel pretty confident. Three foul balls in a row. He’s right on this pitcher. That one missed. Here’s [Music] a one-two. Fights it off. He’ll see another backed off the plate that time. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. keeps the at bat going with a foul ball with the tying run at the plate here in the top half of inning number seven. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. [Music] [Applause] Two down. Stays alive. [Applause] and he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. So far, just one of those days for this lineup. You get a couple of runners on and you’re looking at having a big inning. And that strike out right there just pours water on the fire. You look for the next hitter to step up and try to do something, pick up his teammate and his club. Here comes the manager out of the Braves dugout and he will make a move to the pen. Dylan Lee will depart and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Anel de los Santos gets handed the rock out of the pen. And as relievers go, he’s not a big strikeout guy. Tries to force weak contact. So command and execution are huge for him. Come on, let’s go. Vulpi at the plate now. And that’s inside. Stanton the lead runner out at second. Chisum over at first with one away. Check swing and he went. It’s a ball in two strikes. [Applause] Two on, one out. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out of the slider and there’s two gone. Oh, that slider down and away. It’s just kind of a slow death with two strikes you’re looking to protect and halfway to the plate. You know you’ve committed and you know you’re going to have no chance of touching it. Tell you what, sometimes you just have to tip your cap. Here’s the catcher, Austin Wells. And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Two aboard, two outs. [Applause] off the plate inside. Going to count one and two. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. That one outside. Two and two. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. Here comes Stanton. He’ll score and it’s an RBI single and they cut the lead to two. Always feels amazing getting a job done when the team needs you to come through. It’s just bigger than your own individual stats. Wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. There’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that. Now, that sets up a huge at bat in this ball game. Now, here is Oswald PZA. And that’s off the inside edge. And that is ball one. Come on. Two on, two outs, and a swing and a miss. And a swing and a miss. There’s that slider. That front door slider is such a devastating pitch. You don’t want to get beat by the inside fast ball. So, you cheat a little bit and then by the time it gets there, it’s out of the swing plane. [Applause] And a one, two, two, and two. And that’s downstairs and outside. This point in the game, you cannot issue free passes. He’s going to have to challenge this hitter. Hitter’s got to be ready to swing it. And a payoff pitch. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Oh, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the seventh. So now to the plate for Atlanta. Michael Harris II. Ball. One there. That one a little bit high and it’s two and 0. Two balls, no strikes. Rip to third. Whips it to first and the leadoff hitter set down to open the seventh. Now batting the short stop. There’s the shorts stop at the play. Nick Allen. That one finds the zone. Strike one. And it’s fouled away. Base is empty, one away here. The bottom of the seventh. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two upstairs. Swing and a high-fly ball right field. Bellinger. Bats out number two. Now batting the designated hitter. Jerickson Profar getting ready to hit. One for three. Come on. Come on y’all. Let’s go. First pitch misses. Sliced hard but foul. [Music] Closed but called a ball and a count two and one. on the corner for a strike. Next offering upstairs. Hit in the air center field. Bellinger sizing it up. Makes the catch and over. Nothing doing for the offense that time. Eighth inning coming up. It’s the Braves four and the Yankees two. Now, new pitcher for the Braves, Dave Bell Hernandez. And one thing on him, he’s been really good this season at keeping the ball in the park. Not an easy guy to take deep. So, back to the top of the order. And now the first baseman, Paul Goldmith, 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. Pitch misses. One and0. [Music] Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. Next offering is in for a strike. And there’s a ball. runs it up to 96 to record the punch out. Well, really nice job of finishing the hitter off right there. Glove side command, fast ball, firm to the outside corner. Tell you what, very difficult to do anything with that pitch even if you do swing. Bellinger up to hit right here. Outside low. Ball one. One ball. No strikes. The Yanks down by a pair. And we’re in the top of the eighth. That one hammered but pulled foul. misses inside and that’s ball two. All right, he swings and crushes one deep on its way back there. Gone. It’s a belly bomb. He leaves the yard to right. That’s his fourth home run of the series. It’s 4-3. He’s so good at getting his arms extended and that’s exactly what he did right there. You don’t typically want to pull a pitch in that part of the plate, but he doesn’t allow his wrist to roll over. Stays through the ball, gets the loft, and gets the home run. One down. Here comes Aaron Judge. And that drops in for a strike. And a swing and a miss there. Two pretty nasty sliders to get this hitter in an 02 count. If you’re up there at the plate, you got to look up in the zone and spit on anything that’s down. and one and two. Gets a piece and stays alive. [Music] hacks and misses. It’s a strike out. Oh, that slider wasn’t even close to the strike zone and he got him to chase. That’s just a bad approach right there. Either he was looking for something else and got completely fooled or he was sitting all over the slider and just couldn’t resist the temptation. But man, really expanded right there and didn’t have a chance of making contact with that pitch. And here is John Carlos Stanton out in front and fouled to the left side. Looking to get the tying run on base. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Very solid inning on the mound so far here in the eighth. Holding on to this narrow lead. This is exactly what they were looking for. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. Breaking ball misses down and away. Two balls, two strikes. Got him. Outside pitch got the better of him that time, but not before they answer back with a solo home run. It’s now a 43 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Clayton Beater. This is his third time out this year. Number 85, Clayton Beater. Matt Olsen up to the plate. 0 for three in this one. Matt Olsen. That’s a little high. Ball one. Just missed with that good fast ball inside, but it plants a seed in the hitter’s mind. He’s got to be ready for that pitch which will open up the outside part of the plate. Fought off foul. That one’s in there. And it’s one and two. Activity in the bullpen for the Yankees. Ian Hamilton, the young right-hander up and throwing. That misses the countdown now. Two and two. [Music] And that one missing low. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. Very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with. chases the fast ball up the ladder. Struck him out. Oh, that high force seam fast ball has become such a great pitch for pitchers to finish hitters off. They’re trying to stay back with two strikes, make sure that they can handle something off speed and just with good spin rate, good rotation through the zone, elevate it a little bit, get a lot of swings and misses. And that’s a really nice job right there. Check. Swing. No appeal. Swing and a miss as he chases that one darting out of the zone. One strike. And the two-1 hammered but foul. [Applause] [Music] And that’s in the dirt. [Applause] And that one lifted in the air center field. Chisum on the move. Snags it for the second out. Now batting catcher. Two out. Space is empty. Shawn Murphy now at the plate. He’s already homerred here in this one. That one missing inside. Two down, nobody on here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. Next offering is fouled back. [Music] Next pitch is outside. Nope. [Applause] Three one. Now this is in the air down the line and that lands in no man’s land. A foul ball. Two down. Doon swings and misses on the fast ball up in the zone for the strikeout. Braves go down quickly here, but they hold on to a 4-3 lead. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Relacius. And we all know about his slider. It’s just filthy, man. And one of the better ones in the game, I’d say. Spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a ton. Well, one-run game. And stepping in for the Yankees, Jazz Chisum Jr. Jazz Chisum Jr. [Applause] And the first pitch misses for ball one. Swings through that. One and one. [Applause] The one two ripped to short, zips it across and the leadoff man retired here in the ninth. That play won’t be trending on social media later on, but it’s still important to execute it to perfection. This game is a lot harder than it looks, partner. He’s two outs away. Jason Dominguez stepping in now for the Yankees. Late on that fast ball. Well, a come and get me fast ball right there. He didn’t look ready for the velocity. I think it’d be a mistake to throw him anything off speed right here. That one is absolutely belted. dives, but it falls. And now it looks like extra bases. Around second now, going for three. The relay in there safely. Well, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. Even though center fielders are amazing at tracking down balls these days, there’s still a lot of room out there and it’s a big field. So, if you hammer one to center like that, there’s a decent chance you’re picking up extra bases. A chance now to even the score and maybe extend this game. Aaron Boon making a move for a new bat. Trent Gisham. Well, they’re going with the lefty bat here. Boo. Trying to improve that matchup for a very important at bat in this game. Now a pitch out to defend against the squeeze, but nothing going on. Crowd locked in right now. One-run game here in the ninth. Just missed. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So, that’s a good take by him. And another ball. Back to back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So, I think the confidence level is raised right here. Yeah, the 3 0 finds the zone. I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. [Applause] [Music] Lifted in the air right center field. Harris sizing this one up. Drops into the glove. Here comes the runner from third. He’ll score on the sack fly and they’ve tied it in the top of the ninth. Sometimes all you got to do is your job and don’t over complicate things. Keep it simple. Runner third, less than two outs. Put the ball in play. And a nice job with the sack fly. Welts stands in here, leaves that one off the inside. He didn’t want to give up that run, but he did. Got the fly ball. Sack fly out. Now it’s time to attack these other guys. Get your team back in the dugout. This one ripped but fouled to the right. Ball game is still tied. They can get out of this inning with a tie game. Misses off the plate and a count. Two and one. activity in the bullpen. Austin Cox getting ready to come in for manager Brian Snicker. Two down, base is empty, but one run across here in the top of the ninth. That misses the zone. And that’s ball three. Oswald PZA in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. And boy, that was the pitch. 3-1. You want to be really aggressive on the fast ball. That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. Works the walk. One of the things about that two out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So, a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI. And those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. drilled to right way back there and that is gone. And that should quiet this home crowd. Home run number 15 on the year and they lead it. It’s 6-4. He sent the first pitch over the wall. Must have dinner reservations cuz he wasn’t wasting any time at the plate in that at bat. [Applause] I love the approach as a pinch hitter right there. Don’t let him steal a strike on you just because you’re coming in cold off the bench. If you get something to handle, jump all over it. And he was on that one. That’s a big boost to the dugout. Here comes the manager out of the Braves dugout and he will make a move to the pen. Reel Glacius departs two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout and we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Pierce Johnson will come in. Should be a good first matchup for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up. Back to the top of the order now. Here is Goldmith. 0 for four. Two strikeouts and two ground outs. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Let’s go. Two outs. That one misses. Two and 0. And a strike in there. Next offering in there for a strike. That is strike two. So Goldie strikes out here, but they strike for three in the inning. Two on this two-run home run. It’s now a 64 ball game. Back after this on the show. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Devin Williams. And he’s had a struggle so far this year. As you can see, the inflated RA looking to bring that down a little bit right here. Deon Williams Boss now in the game as he takes over third. Number 90 Boss. and that’s outside. And that’s ball one. Williams, 30 years old now. And he was a second round pick back in 2013. [Applause] And that misses. Now two and 0. Swing and a highf fly ball right field. That one back. That one on its way and it’s gone. Another homer. He’s done it again. His second homer of the game. It’s 65. [Applause] [Applause] That’s the exact definition of hitting the ball where it’s pitched. taking that outside fast ball and driving it the opposite way out of the ballpark. You want to bottle that type of approach. Yeah, baby. JCA into the game now on defense, but in a strange way. This is not a position he’s used to playing as far as we know. Azie Alb’s up to the plate. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. A oneun lead. The home team trying to pull it out. Little bit low and it’s one and one. Let’s get it going, buddy. That’s a little bit low. Well, an interesting situation. One swing, you can tie up the ball game, but if you’re patient and work a walk, then you bring the game-winning run to the plate. That clips the zone. Two and two now. Really good cutter that he’s able to front door and back door. That pitch is devastating. One-run game. Bottom nine and it remains two and two. [Music] And that skips in the dirt and a foul ball. He stays alive. He fouls it off. We’ll do it again. You got this. On the ground to first. Goldie takes it himself. So, it was a long battle at the plate, but they still managed to get the out. That’s a huge defensive play in the late stages of the game. It might not be the most challenging we’ve seen today, but it needed to be made. That’s helping your team. Alvarez swings through it for strike one. knocks that one away and will do it again. Trying to close out a one-run lead. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. Swung on. Belted. That one is back. That’s down. One hops off the wall and now the tying run is into scoring position. Well, a big swing of the bat right there. He got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point. Pretty impressive for an 02 count. And now a crucial opportunity to tie up this game with another base hit. Michael Harris II. Next up for the Braves. Swing and a miss. It’s 0 and one. So the tying run at second. Swings and misses. And that is strike two. Come on, you can do it. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Squirts away a little bit. Tag. Save. He’s into third on the wild pitch. As a closer, he’s out there in that role for a reason. But even they lose the handle on one here and there, especially with all the nasty stuff coming out of bullpens these days. He’s making it a little interesting here. In the dirt, but kept close. Runner stays put at third. Two-2 swing and a miss. Struck him out. Braves down to their final out. Big strike out right there. And that kind of takes the pressure off the defense a bit. Infield was in. So now they can move back, give themselves more time on a grounder to make a play. A lot more ways to work out of this and strand that runner at third now. And here comes the Yankees manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Devin Williams done for the night and he leaves a runner at third. So, we’ll see how the next pitcher deals with that when we get back. Tim Hill on a pitch here. This softball has been really good against left-handed hitters. So, it’s their last chance in this one. Stepping in, Nick Allen trying to deliver as the hero. That one finds the zone. Strike one. The tying run is 90 ft away. The shorts stop takes a ball and one and that clips the inside corner. Really going after him here. All fast balls to get ahead in the count. Hill is just one strike away. Swing and a miss and that’s the ball game. Nice work out of the bullpin for that first MLB Wanboo. They turned to him when they didn’t have the lead. He kept things steady and he’s rewarded with a W. 65 the final here today. For Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
