#DallasCowboys Fish AM Live Report: Top 5 Takes – A ‘BOYS BUST … already?!

How can he already be a bust? I’m Mike Fischer, your trusty and trust reporter. Good Monday morning. Ah, 36 years on the cowboy beat as we get ready to go to Oxnard. And on our breakfast menu, breakfast at Fishes, we have five items you can choose from. Eggs, bacon, coffee, toast. No. Javvante, Tyler, Pickins, and Oxnard among the conversation items. Get in, get on, be good. Bring something of intellect to the table. And by the way, the Uncle Fish store below, uh, Broken Halo is at your service. Look at this. Fueled by the haters. Although, I don’t think this shirt I don’t think you can do the star. Don’t Don’t show Jerry the star, otherwise there’ll be a big lawsuit. There’s the eight bongs on the wall for those of you who like and bike. And away we go. Javant is going to be a bust. Um, as the Nationals and the Casuals try to evaluate where the Cowboys are and where they’re going, this one seems to resonate that the Cowboys signing of Javante Williams that Javvante is going to end up being a bust. Let’s Oh, yeah. There’s the hat. cowboyscountry.com where uh I’ve noticed Ben, Brian, Kenneth, Joey, Apple, Scott, you haven’t been hanging out there this weekend. Uh let’s get there today, shall we? cowboyscountry.com and I thank you in advance. There’s good news and bad news about what the Cowboys have done at running back in a way. Really, it’s the same news. They did not invest in running back. They made changes at running back. Ben, I need that shirt. I know. They They made changes, but they didn’t invest. Jonathan Trotter checking in from overseas. Javvante has not exactly been great so far in his career. Rookie year was, then he had the injuries. Apple, I need that hat. I know. That’s sweet, isn’t it? Cowboyscountry.com. If you get Javvante back to where he was, and that was just four years ago, get him back to his rookie year, you you really do have something pretty special. But I don’t know that you’re going to get that. But now, let’s consider how you bust. They got a seventh round rookie here, Phil Mafa. He can’t bust. They got a fifth round rookie in blue. Fifth rounders bust. They gave pennies to Miles Sanders bust. And Javante I think is one year $3 million. My point is the investment in that running back room. I guess it’s a catch 22. How are you going to get big production out of a running back room when you don’t invest anything in it? And then the flip side is how can any of them be a bust. You paid nothing for them. So, uh I don’t we don’t know who’s going to win the job. I told you how impressive Miles Sanders was during OTAAS and mini camp. Relatively speaking, doesn’t guarantee anything, but we know we know this right now. I don’t think Jayon Blue is getting cut. He’d have to be terrible to get cut. But Phil Mafa could not make the 53. Absolutely. And then just come back in the practice squad. That’s absolutely in play. That wouldn’t be a bust. He’s a seventh round pick. You could cut my If my Sanders and Jabonte, one of them looks much better than the other. You can cut one of them. You’re not going to cut both of them. If they both look the same, they both stay. I say, but you can’t be a veteran minimum kind of guy at any position or a seventh round pick at any position and be a bust. It doesn’t even fit the definition. So with Javvante, Miles, and Mafa, it’s it’s upside or nothing. And then with Jaydon Blue, he’s a little more in the middle. Christopher D, Uncle Fish Premium, you think the staff thinks a blocking scheme issue? Do they have a blocking scheme issue? Um, what we’ve talked about a lot when it comes to the running game, and we’ve heard all about how the Cowboy running back room is so poorly graded by nationals and casuals. I can’t let this go. They hire an offensive coordinator as the head coach. They hire an offensive line coach as the offensive coordinator. And they hire quote the best offensive line coach in college from Kansas to come over and take that job here. On paper, that just can’t not work when it comes to the running game. It just can’t not. That’s real good English. Item two, as we move past the idea of a bust when there’s no investment, I’m I’m going to invest a penny into this uh business and then the business doesn’t work. I lost a penny. Item two, Tyler Smith uh now ranked by some not just as the second best this under the age of 25 or this second best guard in football. to say some second best guard in all of football. And to the Cowboys credit, Zack Martin out, Tyler Smith in, Booker, hopefully that would make sense. But the Cowboys have begun the cycle again in a good way. Now eventually these guys need to get paid and Tyler Smith will get paid sooner. Well, sooner than Booker, not sooner rather than later, the way the Cowboys operate, but they have already reinvigorated, remodeled, and rebuilt this offensive line. Um, you’d love to have Pro Bowlers all across the way. I don’t know that the center I don’t know that BB projects as a Pro Bowler. Um, I don’t think you’re ever going to get there at with Steel. And all you need out of Gayton is for him to be good enough. Just to be good enough. If Gayton’s good enough, BB’s good, Steel’s good, and the two guards are great, you’ve done it again. You as a Cowboys organization, Jerry Jones on down has you have begun the cycle again of being good and powerful and young as a position group and a critical position group of course. So, let’s watch Tyler Smith go and let’s see if Booker can catch up with him and you will have book ends, pun intended, at guard and guard and and we’ll worry about we’ll worry about paying them uh when we have to. Item three, um a national casual criticism of the Cowboys. And this has been portrayed as like like a rip job. Oh, by the way, Scott Lynn is right. Uncle Fish Premium, please hit the like button. That tells the algorithms on YouTube the kind of cowboy programming you like. Does you good, does me good. Please do that. And may I remind you, cowboyscountry.com. That’s where we pay the bills here at Marshia’s Mansion. There’s a light bulb that was out here for three days because we couldn’t afford to replace it. So, um, if you’ll go to cowboyscountry.com, um, we can afford the light bulbs in this joint. Cowboys built to stay relevant, not challenge in 2025 is the headline. And this seems like a kick in the balls. And it and and I think the idea was to kick the Cowboys in the Gorts, but it doesn’t it shouldn’t hurt your feelings. It shouldn’t impact your sensibilities. And why? Because with Stephen Jones’s hands on the steering wheel, one hand before, two hands now, over the course of the last 12 plus years. That’s essentially been his stated policy. It it is not ripping the Cowboys to say, now to say they’re not going to challenge for the playoffs or whatever, that’s a judgment. But to say that the Cowboys are built to be relevant, I’m not talking about marketing. I’m talking about football, that’s on purpose. Kenneth Beecher, Uncle Fish Premium, relevant teams make the playoffs. That’s the upside. Here’s the downside. And and it’s about I’m not old enough to actually have done anything with the brass ring, but your grand ask your grandparents. You go around the marggo round, I think, and then you get a chance to grab the brass ring. Yay. It is Stephen Jones’s philosophy. Let’s let’s be good enough to to be able to have the the brass ring within our reach. Jerry uses the phrase Um, it’s a he’s a B. What did you say? We’re around the rim. DK, I’ve left comments on cowboyscountry.com. Good place to visit. Yeah, thank you. So, Steven’s got Jerry convinced that being around the rim is the way that if you’re always around the rim, then you’ve always got a chance at a layup. And it’s a it’s a sound philosophy except for a couple problems. Problem number one, you’ve been doing it for 15 years and it hadn’t worked. That that’s that’s a pretty good sample size. And number two, if I’m around the rim, but the Eagles are dunking. If if I’m trying to make sure I’m around the rim, but the Eagles are dunking, I lose. No wonder I don’t get the brass ring. And then the Eagles do that for a few years. And then here come the Rams and they do it for a few years. And then the Buccaneers, I’m going backwards. Do it for a couple of years. And the next thing you know, I got 12, 15 years of But I’m around the rim. Yeah, but the other guy is tearing down the rim. That’s what’s wrong with the let’s just let’s let’s stay good. Again, not an insult to say Cowboys are focused on being relevant. Talking about football, not marketing. They’re focused on being a a good team that’s within all the time that stays up good. And they do they kind of accomplish that. But just when it’s time for them to grab the brass ring, the Eagles have already taken it. The Rams have already taken it. The Buccaneers have already taken it. The Chiefs have already taken it. And even in this NFL now, here comes Washington. There sits Baltimore, Buffalo, and more. So the Cowboys philosophy is sound. like their thesis paper is sound. Now they’ve taken their thesis paper and tried to apply it to 15 years of real life. Wonk wonk. It’s been proven over 15 years to be unound. Item four. Uh one of the national websites did a series of one guy on each team that you want to root for. And I I found it really fascinating cuz first of all, I think it was NFL.com. First of all, that’s an unusual approach, isn’t it, for a sports writer to say, “Who’s who’s I’m here’s who I’m rooting for.” Ramon $5 pitch into the super chat. Fishy used to talk about how Cowboys fans think it’s their birthright to be in the Super Bowl. I haven’t talked about that in quite some time and that Ramon points out that’s certainly been diminished. No doubt. That used to be one of my go-tos, but you know, seems like that was decades ago, [Laughter] right? Decades ago. And you can have your cowboy guy, your individual cowboy guy that you root for. You can pick one. It’s a fun game, fun parlor game. As we go, barroom, classroom. I thought it was unusual for NFL.com to do this, but I guess kind of clever. Mike the 65. Jerry’s proven to be content with the Cowboys being the 10th best team in the league. I I’ve never folded to that, Mike. I I’ve never conceded that. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to argue with you about it. Steve Stephen is Fish and Jerry’s all-in just being around the rim. Yeah. And don’t don’t get confused about last year’s allin until you’re willing to make that that last move. You can’t know you can’t know the difference between the walk and the talk. So, we we need to see the Cowboys as a contender before the trade deadline. Have a good record as a trade deadline approaches and then watch what happens. That’ll be the next judgment. Uh Ramon, Stephen A just loves us. Stephen A Stephen A. Smith of ESPN does love the Cowboys. Why? cuz his fake hate of the Cowboys, he he can replace his own light bulbs. He doesn’t need to ask you for help. So, NFL.com says the cowboy that they’re rooting for is George. Now, there’s a twist, isn’t it? I sense to some degree they’re trying to be contrarian. that that’s not I mean make your list if if if I survey you guys and say who give me one cowboy you’re rooting for you might pick a guy who’s an underdog. You might pick a guy who’s your longtime favorite. You might pick a guy who you root for him because Dak because he needs to play really well for the team to do really well. But George Pickkins is a is a media favorite. MP I think gets it right. Everybody’s rooting for him to not screw up. Yeah. Jerry, give me George and Gayton. And again, there’s a football reason to root for Tyler Gayton. I if if he hits, you’re that much better. So there there can be an emotional reason to root for Duce Vaughn, a football reason to root for Tyler Gayton. But I find it fascinating that somebody would say, “I’m rooting for Pickkins given his reputation as somebody the Steelers will tell you that’s that’s just Cowboys will disagree. Steelers will tell you he’s kind of hard to root for around here.” Kenneth B, I’m rooting for Elam again. Give you a starting quarterback out of nowhere. Ellen Wright rooting for George to remain emotionally sound. AK Dak is a punk. Don’t don’t don’t know what that means. Don’t have any idea what that means. Inner rooting for Overshon. There you go. Papa. Yeah. When he didn’t play for us, we didn’t root for him. Well, that’s right. So, you you got you got somewhere between 53 and 90 guys. You got as many as 90 guys you can root for now as we get ready to go to training camp which is right around the corner of course. And finally item five speaking of training camp. Oxnard attendance and my friend Joe Hoy who just uh moved to the Dallas Morning News. Good for him. They write about the new deal with the city of Oxnard 5-year contract extension. That’s great. And they note in the story that last year’s cowboy attendance was about 24,000 people over 17 practices. Half what it was 10 years before. Cowboys attendance in Oxnard over the course of a decade cut in half. Nope. You got it. Ouch. What’s it mean, Kenneth B? The economy that can be in place. What else? What else? I I mean, I think I can pinpoint it. I think Cowboy fans are exhausted by just being relevant. Exhausted by the idea of, “Yeah, but we we’re always so close to the brass ring. Exhausted by the concept of we’re all in, but we’re really not.” exhausted by the concept of we’re close we’re hanging out close to the rim the bottom line on attendance in Oxnard cuz like like I don’t care doesn’t impact me one way or the other it uh people who want a vacation to Oxnard and many have half as many as used to I I I think it’s delightful locals who want to go there and hang out. Fantastic. It’s It’s a It’s a fun way for the family to spend a day. What I want the reaction to be has nothing to do with the media and has nothing to do with fans. You get to not go. You get to not go to Oxnard. And by the way, it has nothing to do with marketing because because that’s my worry is that the Cowboys, they’re aware of this number. Cowboys are going to examine this number and go, “Okay, you know what that means? More cheerleaders. You know what that means? Raise the beer prices. You know what that means? We need dancing girls, balloon shaping clowns, uh character sketch artists, but you know the real way to get the attendance up. We all know the real way to get the attendance up and Jerry knows it too, right? cowboyscountry.com is where it’s at. We would love to have you hang out with us there all day long. Fish out.

  1. In my opinion, training camp was a lot better 10 years ago before the houses were being built. You used to walk around the whole field, but now you can only walk on half of the field.. on one side you have $300 VIP section and on the other side it’s basically free. if the players on the VIP section, you can’t see them from the other side. if you sit in the free section and the players playing in the VIP section, you can’t see the players they’re too far away.. so no matter what side you sit on if they’re playing on the other field, you can’t see them. The parking price is change every single day. They’re more expensive on Saturday and Sunday. I’m just lucky because I can literally walk there because I live in Oxnard

  2. Fish, I know you don’t watch film. But I implore you to take a deeper look at Bebe. Since you don’t watch film😏, go see what the experts are saying about him. He will be a big of an impact player as Smith.

  3. It is easy to be around the rim because now days so many teams can make the playoffs !
Those teams, most are not good enough to go to champ game much less SB, but the nfl added more ways for teams to make the playoffs, for more tv games, and to make fans of those teams happy. We have 3 WC teams now, it used to be 2. More divisions mean more teams in playoffs.
Jerry saw the 9-7 giants win a SB and thought just get in and you can win, but that giants team was very good and only lost early due to many injuries, and when they got those guys back they won game after game and beat NE in SB.
