🔴LIVE 🔴Milwaukee Brewers VS Los Angeles Dodgers/July 18/Baseball Envivo /MLB THE SHOW 25

just about ready to go. And today’s starting pitcher, Yoshobu Yamamoto. Tell us about him in that sub3ra. Singi. Well, anytime you can keep your erra under three, you’re doing a lot of things right. And you’re putting your team in a position to win a lot of ball games as well. And he’s doing tremendous out there on the mound. Every time he gets the ball, you expect him to go out there and dominate. And that’s what he’s been to this point. We’ll see how he is today. All right. Ready to go here. And stepping in is the speedy Selick. That one pulled foul. The wind and the pitch. That’s a ball. One ball, one strike. Let’s go, Los Angeles. That one hammered center field. That’s back and he makes the catch on the track. Just missed a homer that time. Let’s take a look at the Brewers lineup and an important bat for them. Batting fifth in this one, Bryce Terang. Well, he’s an important part of this lineup for sure. I mean, there’s no doubt about it, Boo. It’s somebody that they try to feed off of. He does a lot of things, you know, very well up there at the plate. He’s got a presence about him and you know he’s a guy that you really kind of like to watch swing the bat. William Contras in the box here lets that one go for a ball. One out. Base is empty and that one is in the dirt. Ball two. Foul ball there. That one fouled off. Two and two. fouled off and they’ll do it again. Still two and two after the foul ball. That’s down and in. He’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. that one ripped right center field. High bounce. Takes it over the fence. That’s an automatic double. The automatic double kind of feels like enjoying cruise control in your car. Boo. You don’t need to keep the pedal down as you cruise into second base. Just no worries in the world. And you know what? He put a really good swing on that one. And now it’ll be Christian Yelich fouled off. He was late. Contrarus the runner at second with one away. inside and one and one. Tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. Man at second in the air right field. Hernandez ranging after it, reaching for it, makes the catch, tags up from second and he’ll head to third. Got to love the over the shoulder catch. I tell you what, those are really fun to make. Jackson Torio. So, the go-ahehead run in scoring position. Chio the next to hit. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season, so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. out to short. Betts sends it to first and that’s the third out and the Dodgers are coming up to hit. No score. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Back here at Dodger Stadium and on the mound today, Freddy Peralta. Chris, it’s a little more common these days, but still he’s a strikeout per inning type of guy. Well, I hear you about the strikeouts. A lot more guys striking out today, but when you consider having the ability to get that strike out, particularly when you need it, a man on third, less than two outs, situations where, yeah, maybe you’re not a real high strikeout guy, but just knowing you have the swing and miss dump in a big spot, I think it’s real critical. And he’s got it. James Outman, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. Pitch misses and now two and0. Fouls one off out of play. Back to our left. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. Up and in. And that’s ball three. Was good pitch there. really had some run and finished a little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Everything came together for him. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know, they used to say charge it crazy. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. Here’s Betts. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. Betts is definitely one of those guys that excels at everything he does. Boo, in terms of baseball, he can do it all. He’s won World Series, batting titles, gold gloves, and everything else you can think of. And that one fouled off. Ruer at first with no outs here. upstairs. One and two to count. I don’t think he was trying to miss by that much in an 02 count. Just tried to overthrow that pitch. Next offering way upstairs. got him looking. One out. Frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter and I’m sure that’s going to sit on him for a little while. You want to be ready to hit the fast ball. Sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case right there. Will Smith to the plate. Top of the zone and it’s called a strike. The 01 runner takes off on the ground to the left and that’s just foul. Tried to check his swing there. Now it appeal to first and yes he did. James Kingsley rings him up. Oh interesting. He’s looking very comfortable out of the stretch after giving up the leadoff single. Backto back strikeout. So they haven’t been able to move that runner up. Get him into scoring. And that one gets away at the plate. So a wild pitch allows the runner to advance. Man on second, two down. The bit behind with that swing. It’s strike one. Good fast ball going early. Until they show they can make some good contact. You keep on throwing the pitch. Runner at second. Two down. misses outside. And now two balls and two strikes. And that one hit to first. He takes it himself to the bag. And that’ll do it. One left for LA. Scoreless after one. Back here at Chavez Ravine, top of the second. This is Bryce Terra. Chris, his skill set straight out of the mid 80s. Good contact, not much power, and he could run. He always uses the wheels to his advantage. His biggest challenge in this day and age is to not get caught up in trying to hit home runs because so many people are. Edmond makes the grab on the run. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. I think baseball’s starting to understand that those guys are valuable like they once were. They need them in this game today. One down, base is empty. And a swing and a line drive out of right field. Hernandez pulls it down and there’s two gone. That is seven short up now for Milwaukee. Andrew Monisterio inside. Just missed. Second inning here. No score. That’s off the inside corner and a count now two and nothing. Next offering is fouled back. Two down to a little bit high. Maybe three balls in a strike. Pop foul out of play off to the right. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. The right-hander gives up the two out walk. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. Eric Hos. Here’s the Brewers catcher now. Eric Hos. And that’s a little bit high. And that is ball one. Two gone, but the go-ahead run is at first. Here in the top of the second, Yamamoto throws over and he’s back in easily. Now one missed. That’s in for a strike. Swing and a liner. Foul off to the right. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. Los Angeles swing and a miss and he chases that one in the dirt in time. So the drop third strike doesn’t hurt him and that’s that. Brewer strand one. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. Back here in LA. Bottom of the second. Here come the Dodgers. No score. And at the plate for the Dodgers. Tay Oscar Hernandez. Peralta back to work. And a foul ball. headed towards the corner and that’s a foul ball. Misses off the inside now one and two. Next offering misses down and away foul ball left side. He’ll see another foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. LA. And there’s a ball. Got him looking. Andy’s registered three Ks in this one. Well, not every great at bat ends in a hit. He saw a lot of pitches. That kind of an at bat can be contagious to a lineup. And now Andy Pahes. First offering and it just misses. Swang and a miss. There’s that change up. Larry Bullard making the calls behind the plate for us in this one. Pretty good strike zone. Well reviewed by those we talked to around the league. Yeah, he’s an umpire. He doesn’t get a lot of looks from players. Maybe here and there once in a while, but he’s appreciated back there. What about an umpire’s height? How much of a role does that play in your experience and what the strike zone is like? Yeah, I think it pushes the strike zone up a little bit, which you know, as a former hitter, you like that. You wanted the ball up. You didn’t want to have to deal with stuff down in the zone consistently. That one to first. Bowers steps on the bag. Already two out here in the home half of inning number two. center fielder Tommy Edmond. Here’s a switch hitter Tommy Edmond in there at the knees and one. Man, this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. Bowers takes it to the bag and the Dodgers are set down in order. No runs, no hits, no errors. We head on now to the top of the third. No score. And we’re back. This is Anthony Seagler. Anthony Seagler. and downstairs. strike three. It’s a strike out for Yoshobu. Good late cut for the strike out there. That thing really got in on him. And you know, the cutter isn’t really a huge swinging miss pitch most of the time because it’s not really meant to move a whole lot. You’re just trying to miss the big part of the barrel and maybe get some weak contact. But that one right there did a whole lot more than that. That was a really good pitch. Freelick the batter now as he swings and misses for strike one. Spin rates outstanding on that high fast ball. Really tough to hit. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. So a man aboard now with one away. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. man at first with one gone. William Contreras up now for the Brewers. Doubled in his first AB at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. I love this part of the game. Does he really want to try and steal second against this catcher? I know he’s fast, but it’s pretty risky. in the dirt. Blocked. Not in time. He’s safe. And now a man into scoring position. Really good read by the runner there. His secondary lead. He anticipates the trajectory going down and gets a really nice jump up to second base. Now he’s in scoring position. He’s taken away the double play opportunity. Top of the third, no score. And that’s a little high. Looks like he’s being a little cautious with him in this at bat after doubling the first time up. Doesn’t want to make another mistake. Next offering is in for a strike. and delivers outside. Looks like he’s still trying to find a consistent release point on that curve ball. That one just sort of popped out of his hand. No real command and finish to it. It’s going to be real important for him to finish that pitch, throw it down in the zone where he wants to if it’s going to be effective for him throughout this game. Now a check on him at second. Back safely. And there’s a rocket into the outfield. Coming around third is Freighic. He’ll score easily. In safely with a double, his second of the day. He has had such a good day today. I think he’s going to want to leave when it’s over. Couple of doubles today for the DH. Now it’s Christian Yelich, the MVP in 2018, the runner up in 2019. Ball one, no strikes. popped up foul territory behind the plate. Catcher tosses the mask, settles under it, and there’s two down. Up next for Milwaukee, center fielder Jackson Torio. Now the Brewers cleanup hitter, Jackson Chorio, 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at bat. And that’s in there for strike one. And that one missing low. That one ripped left field. That’s back. Tattooed to tater town and gone. So he goes yard to left. His 17th of the year. And they add a pair. It’s three nothing. Tremendous eye hand coordination to be able to get that splitter and still get the barrel to it, get it up in the air for a home run. Tell you what, these guys work so hard at their craft and right there it was on display. Two outs, nobody on. Next for the Brewers, Bryce Terang outside low and it’s one and0 on the mound. He’s got to remember his offense can score a lot. So if he can hit the reset button from here going forward, there’s still a chance that his club can win this ball game. Late on that fast ball. Two outs. Base is empty. The 1-1 is fouled off right through there. Got him. That K is his third of the game. But they strike for three in the inning. Two on this two-run home run. It’s now 3 nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show and welcome back to the ballpark. Set for the bottom of the third, Miguel Rojas at the plate. And when you talk about elite defensive third baseman, this guy is at the top of the list. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. Ball one. Stud. When you look at players like this, you play that hot corner. got to be pretty courageous over there with the way balls come off the bat. That’s the kind of guy that every year you expect him to be in the All-Star game and have a gold glove if not a platinum glove. And a pop off right side foul territory. And that drops foul. So what are the skills you look for that make a really good defensive third baseman that elite? Well, Boo, one of the things I think about up and in. Look out. Ground ball left side and foul ball. Line drive and that should be extra bases. Makes the turn and heads for second. And he’s got a leadoff double. Got to love the resiliency he showed in that at bat. battling with two strikes. He really let that ball travel on the outside part of the plate, but that’s a great example that you can still drive the baseball. That’s away. Rip that one down the line for the double. Runner in scoring position. No outs. And up next for Los Angeles, Estee Yuri Ruiz. And he pumps in a strike. One strike. Come on. And that is out of play. Man at second. Battling here as he fouls it away. out to short. Monasterio throws to first. One gone. Bottom of the third inning. And the batter now, James Outman. One for one. He let off the bottom of the first with a single. That pitch in for a strike. Going one. Next offering is fouled back. And now one and two. That one is upstairs. Rojas over at second. One down. in the air fairly deep to right field. Freigh after it. He’s got it. Rounder tags at second and he’s up to third safely with two gone. Now batting short stop Mookie. Mookie digs in here. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. for him right now at the plate. It’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. The shorts stop takes the ball. Though Chris through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. Bounding ball here. Rolls foul. Two outs and a runner, a third here in the last half of the third. Swings through that one for strike two. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now. Doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. Fast ball is outside. Well, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. Two outs. Drilled in the air out towards right center. Freelick sizes this one up. Nabs it. And that ends the inning. So a leadoff double, but they can’t cash it in. On to inning number four. It’s the Brewers three and the Dodgers nothing. Back here at Dodger Stadium as we go to the top of the fourth now. Here’s Jake Bowers. But why the kick the pitch and first offering is fouled off. Here’s a fun fact. Dodger Stadium was also the home of the Los Angeles Angels for four years in the 1960s while they waited for Anaheim Stadium to be Oh, this one high and deep way back there. Are you kidding me? gone. He made him pay for that one. It’s his sixth home run of the season. And they add on. It’s 4 nothing. Just an excellent swing all the way around and it had that sound coming off the bat that gets everyone’s attention. Got a pitch to drive short to the baseball. Squared it up and the backspin carried it out of here. And now the short stop, Andrew Monasterio. There’s the strike. Well, you just got to delete it. You give up that leadoff home run. Go back to work. Focus on this next batter. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. Top half of inning number four. Check swing called strike. Action in the pen down there. Showi Otati the hardthrowing righty is up and loosening. Bond the power lefty up as well. The O2 fights it off. if he’ll see another. Going to count one and two. Just misses with that one. swang and a miss at 96 struck him out. He’s notched four strikeouts now. Boi just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up at two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. He swings and fouls one off. Right through there for a strike. Curve in the dirt. Next one misses and the count’s even at two. He’s trying to stay down in the zone, but the hitter just will not chase. Now back in a two- two count, he’s going to have to go to something else to get him out. Strike three and that’s two in a row. I mean, there aren’t many curve balls in the sport today that break like that thing does. Huge movement. It’s so difficult to get on the same plane and even think about squaring it up, let alone get a piece and hope he throws something else to keep the atbat alive. Two down, base is empty. Next for Milwaukee, Anthony Seagler. Fast ball for a strike at 95. hit well right field way back and gone. He sends it out of here. Second home run of the inning for him. It’s five zip. Sometimes we say it’s a sinker that didn’t sink. Well, that was a splitter that just didn’t split. Kind of like a BP fast ball. And when you throw that pitch, don’t expect to get it back. You’re getting a new baseball from the umpire. Back to the top of the Milwaukee order. S Freelick up now for the Brewers. Outside low ball one. And another ball. Hey, two in one. And that one fouled off. Two down. Nobody on spoils that one and it remains two and two. That’s inside. cut on and missed and it’s a strikeout and that is the inning. But two round tripers in this inning, the long ball was working and the lead is now 5 nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back here at Chavez Ravine, bottom of the fourth and up to the plate is Will Smith. When he steps into the batters box, the comfort level looks so high. It doesn’t matter what kind of delivery that pitcher has, what kind of velocity, what kind of secondary stuff. He is so settled in there. He owns the home plate area. Next pitch inside and now it’s even one and one strike swings through that one out in front that time. Next offering down low and in the dirt. And they’ll do it again. Swings and misses. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strikeout. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. Here is Freddy Freeman grounded out his first time off. There’s a swing and a drive. That one back there and it is gone and they’re on the scoreboard. It’s 51. That was blasted. Absolutely. No doubt off the bat. Love to see a hitter aggressive on the first pitch of an at bat. You watch him from the on deck circle. So when you step in the box, you’re ready to pull the trigger wherever it’s at. Really good job by the hitter. Total conviction on that swing. One out, base is empty. And next for LA, Tay Oscar Hernandez. First offering misses badly for ball one. And a foul ball. One down. Base is empty. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Good job to fight that one off. The one two gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Now five strikeouts for him on the mound. Oh, I’m not sure what he was waiting on right there. He got the change up and still laid on it. You rarely see that. It almost makes you think that he was trying to set the pitcher up. I mean, if you can’t catch up to the off speed stuff, there’s no way you’re going to touch a fast ball. Pah batting for the second time. And that’s strike one. Ground ball right side and that one handled. And that is the inning. The Dodgers do get one back on the solo home run. It’s now a 51 ball game. We’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Show Oti still pretty early in the ball game so this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs. Kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. And now it’s William Contreras. He’s a catcher by trade, but the DH here in this one. That misses the zone and that’s ball one. All right, Singer, you know I’m a dork. Show Otani. Go back to May 5th, 2022 at Fenway Park. He tossed a complete game through 99 pitches. Get this, 81 strikes. It was the most strikes thrown with less than 100 pitches in a game since they started tracking pitch counts. That’s just unreal. Get out of here, Brewers. Next pitch is downstairs. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and one gone. Really nice execution of the cut fast ball right there. Similar to how you might throw a two strike slider. Start at middle away. Let it break and take over that outside corner of the plate. But sometimes with a cutter, you just don’t know how much it’ll move. I think he’s good. And I think he was also a little lucky right there. Yell up for the third time here. Watches that one miss. And that’s down and away. Base is empty, one away. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Just off the inside edge. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Next offering is in for a strike. Swing and a miss as he was out front that time. Draws the walk there. Close pitch there, but you got to forget about that call if you’re out on the mound. You can’t let it affect you going forward. You got to get out of the inning first and then if you want to be frustrated, take it out in the dugout. Chorio in the box now. No balls in a strike. There it was. A high velocity fastball in the zone. I think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter. He’s got good stuff. pitch inside the zone and trust it. And that’s in there at the knees. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. Squirts away a little bit. Throw to second. Not in time. He’s there easily. So, a wild pitch allows the runner to advance. You know, sometimes it takes a reliever a little time to get comfortable with the mound out there, especially when they come in trying to be nasty with every pitch they throw. Not exactly what they were looking for when they called him in, though. We’ll see if he can settle down. Yell the runner at second with one away. And it remains two and two. Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. And ball four, two aboard. Well, they didn’t give him anything to hit. And now with runners on first and second, they’ve set up a double play opportunity. So, not a terrible result. First and second, one out. Bryce Terang up now for the Brewers. Bowl for two in this one. and a good fast ball to start him off. That’s strike one. Always tough to turn two on a speedster like this. It’s even harder with him coming out of the left-handed batters box. You really need something to hit hard on the ground that they can handle to turn two quickly. Fast ball for a strike. Otani, he’s kind of a prototypical bullpen arm in today’s game. Electric stuff that results in a ton of strikeouts in a tough spot like this. That is a big time benefit. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. Now, as a hitter, when a guy like this comes into the game, you feel like he’s standing on top of you and it’s just attack mode coming right at you expecting to get a swing and miss. Runners at first and second with one gone. Struck him out swinging. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base. And the defense breathes a sigh of relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. Keep him off balance, get him out of there, and deal with the next guy. And here’s the first baseman, Jake Bowers. He was late there. Strike one. Oh, one down. That clips the inside corner for a strike. Man, I’m pretty impressed out there on the mound right now. I mean, these are tough spots where pitchers really got to bear down. Those last two pitches were well executed. Swinging a miss. That one in the dirt. Smith gathers, throws in time. The two-3 strikeout ends the inning. Two left on last half of the fifth coming up. It’s the Brewers five and the Dodgers won. Back here in LA, John Shabi with my buddy Chris Singleton. It’s set to get us started. Bottom five, Tommy Edmond. Let’s go. Let’s go. Peralta back to work. That misses the zone. One and0. They’ve got a potent lineup. And when you think about teams capable of rallying from this kind of deficit, they’re right at the top of the list. On its way to the corner, nobody can get there. And it’s a foul ball. Come on, Los Angeles. That clips a corner. Probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. That misses the zone and the count is two and two. recognized that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it to third. Fair ball. That’s right. Now batting. So a man at first. Here’s the third baseman. Miguel Rojos doubled his first time. Check on the runner. Edmond back on a dive. There’s the strike of the knees. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. Look out for the double play. Next offering misses and the count is one and one. And that’s a little bit high. Nobody out. Runner at first. That misses the zone and it’s a full count. bounced and that got the pitcher to first and he beats it. Everyone’s safe. And now the hustle out to check on him. That was quite a shot he took as you see him down on the knee. Yeah, clearly in some real pain, but he will not want to come out of this game if he doesn’t have to. It’s looking to me like he’s going to try to shake it off and continue. First and second, no outs. And at the plate for the Dodgers, Estee Yuri Ruiz. That catches the top part of the zone. And it’s 0 and one. Swanging a popup and the infield fly rule called. Up next for the Dodgers, designated hitter James James Outman steps to the plate for the Dodgers. One for two. And that is downstairs. And it’s one and0. Here’s an opportunity. If you’re going to get back in this game, you have to take advantage of this situation. This feels like their chance. Swing and a miss as he was late that time. One out. Runners at first and second and that misses and it’s two and one. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on two ball count. You can’t nibble but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Two on, one out. This one chopped on the ground but foul. Here’s a 2-2. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. On the ground and it goes just fouled. Clearly trying to stay back a little bit longer for that change up as he fouls that fast ball back. Let’s go. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. Come on, Dodgers. Let’s go. Got him. So, he picks up his sixth strike out of the ball game. Here’s Mookie Betts. He’s kind of an outlier, especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power. First pitch misses. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. That one ripped but foul. When you look at the elite teams in the game right now, there is going to be the slug. No question about it. But the really good offensive teams combined slug with more contact with less swing and miss breaking ball in there. Got him looking. And he’s up to seven strikeouts. Couple of strikeouts with runners on. Sometimes you got to really bear down. And he did just that. nice job of getting out of the jam and out of the inning. Top of the sixth inning. Now it’s the shortstop. Andrew Monisterio. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end. swing and a highf fly ball out towards right field. Hernandez pulls that one down. One up, one down. Now batting catcher Eric Hos up now for the Brewers. Remember Mark Katse was a real good defensive outfielder. Good instincts, not great speed. bounce to the left side and that chance handled. Slings to first. Play is made. Two out. Now batting third base Anthony Seagler. Two outs. Base is empty. Anthony Seagler will hit next. He’s already homered in this game. Swaging a miss as he was late. So hard to touch. being at the top of the zone, 99, 98, even 97, as pitchers do such a good job of teasing that part of the zone, just elevating a little bit. It looks good because you see it for a good while as a hitter. Looks juicy and by the time you swing, it’s almost in the catcher’s mid. Swings and misses. Struck him out. So, they make short work of them there. Hard of the order 345 coming up. It’s the Brewers five and the Dodgers one. Jacob Miserowski gets the ball now and he’ll feature a hard slider to work off his fast ball. The batter now will be Will Smith who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Miserowski in his rookie season. He features a four seam fast, a slider, a curve, and he works in a change up and ball one. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. That one missed. Here’s a swing and a drive left field and he knew it. He circles the bases. his 13th home run of the season. And they’re chipping away. It’s 52. He put a charge into that one. That was a lightning swing right there. No doubt about it. Knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. Here’s Freddy Freeman now. He’s already homerred here in this one. Not close with that one. Ball one. Very humble guy and you know on the field off the field and he goes about his at bats in that way. Boog. He’s, you know, just trying to stay with the plan. And that plan is hit the ball to left center field, drive the ball that way, let it travel. Yep. That one fouled off. And there’s a foul ball. Get another one. One and two here. And down on strikes and that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. Oh, just a beautiful fast ball on the inside corner for that backwards K right there. I think the hitter saw it all the way coming from that opposite arm angle. So, I got to think he was looking away and just got locked up by the heart stuff boring in on his hands. And now, Tay Oscar Hernandez. And that’s downstairs. And that is ball one. swing and a ball hammered left field. That one’s carrying and that’s going to bang against the wall and he’s got it double. These guys today are so great with handling velocity. They’re seeing high speeds day after day and a nice job of turning that one around. Now it’s the second baseman Andy Pahes has grounded out a couple of times inside. just missed. That one misses and it’s two and 0. Right through there for a strike man at second. Swinging a foul out of play. Well, he got challenged with a good fast ball right there. Just couldn’t catch up. You got this. popped in the air left field and that’ll fall for a base hit. The run comes in to score from second. It’s an RBI single. It’s 53. Comes through with the RBI. That’s a ball that a lot of times you’ll see the shortstop or left fielder be able to get to if it hangs up in the air long enough. But right there, it just died and found a way to drop in on the green stuff for the base hit. One gone runner at first. Tommy Edmond at the plate. That one at triple digits. Now, this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important getting back into this ball game. the 01 and fouled off with the tying run at the plate here in the bottom of the six. Pitch misses and the count one and two. Man, oh man, I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Got him swinging. No, when you follow up a tripledigit fast ball with a nasty change up, pretty much every time the hitter’s going to be in trouble. That was the plan. Get him to sit dead red on the fast ball and then just make him look foolish with the off speed stuff. Miguel Rojas getting ready to hit and the first pitch misses for ball one. And there’s a ball. It’s a tough pitch, but in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat, that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up to one. That’s the one. And when she elevates, guys aren’t touched. Shorio sizing this one up. And that is that. They put two on the board on three hits, including the home run. No errors and a runner left. We’re through six full. It’s the Brewers five and the Dodgers three. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the bound. Anthony B bringing in the lefty with a left-handed hitter coming up to hit. Classic bullpen move right here. So, we’ll see how it works out. Here’s the leadoff man for the Brewers, Z Freelick. One for three. Singing. You got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean, watching him track balls in the outfield, it is beautiful. And that one almost got him. Nope. Off to All right. Dodgers on the ground right side throws to first in time and they get the leadoff hitter in the seventh. That’s what a good sinker is designed to do. Get a guy to roll over a little bit, hit the ball on the ground, kill some worms while you’re at it. And now William Contrus. So, how much does his speed factor into his ability to go get it? It’s heartbreaking for the hitter because off the bat, he thinks this ball’s going to get down because of that speed and the ability to make up so much ground. He enters the picture and breaks a guy’s heart. There’s one guy that I can think about, Boog, who started as a third baseman, Alex Gordon, and then became an elite perennial gold glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals. But he’s a guy when you watch him play, you would imagine that that’s all he ever played in his life was the outfield. Yeah, some guys just have instincts, right? I mean, that’s the way it goes. We talk about Larry Walker, the Hall of Famer, and his instinct on the bases, despite the fact that he didn’t play a ton of baseball as a kid. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a played appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. One down. Base is empty. 3-2 now. On the ground to third. In plenty of time to first. That was a strong at bat even though he couldn’t find a way on base. Christian. Two down. Base is empty up now for Milwaukee. Christian Yelich and that’s in for a strike. Ball one there. That one called just inside, I think. And on the mound, he’s trying to get a little bit of an explanation. doesn’t seem to be too bothered by it though, but he clearly thought it clipped the corner. Two outs. Swing and that ball smashed on a line and he makes the catch and that is that. Brewers go down quietly and it remains 53. Let’s go. Now, we’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh, Nick Mes. And if you dig into his walk rate, his numbers are really impressive. He’s really filled up the strike zone this season. So, these batters better be ready to swing the bats. So, digging in, Estee Yuri Ruiz. If there’s nobody on in front of him, you know, a single for him many times is a double. Guy is off to the races, ready to steal a bag when he’s on first base. And there’s a strike. Good heater at 98. Swing and a ground ball. And that one gets through into center field. And that turns the lineup over. James Outman now at the plate. Fast ball for a strike. fouled off. He was late. This is one of those situations the infielders have to pre-plan and understand that the ball’s got to be hit extremely hard right at them if they’re going to have a chance to go for a double play. The tying run at the plate stays alive. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. tying run at the plate and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. And a swing and a miss and one away in the bottom of the seventh. He had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. Here’s Muki Betts now 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. And that drops in for a strike. down the line and that’s a foul ball. The kick and the pitch. Runner goes in the dirt. Blocked by the catcher and he steals second base without a throw. With the tying run at the plate here, the bottom of the seventh. Next pitch is outside. Outside corner. Got him looking. Well, he’s going to have some thinking to do when he leaves the ballpark after this one. That was his third strike out and this one looking obviously. So, he’s been a little overmatched. He’s got to find a way just to be more competitive up there at the plate. Will Smith steps to the plate for the Dodgers. First round pick out of Louisville in 2016. One more, baby. Let’s go. Climb the ladder with that fast ball. Strike one. Yeah, that’s fouled off. I feel with the way that Will Smith is able to handle the bat, control the bat head, he’s very capable of finding green space. Now this one is hammered way back there. On its way and gone and we are tied. Another homer. His second home run of the game. And we’re starting over. It’s 55. The brighter the lights, the more he shines. Yeah, this guy lives for big moments and right there made a statement big time. A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. So now it’s Freddy Freeman just missed two down just missed. You get to this part of the order. Yeah, there’s some pop there, but more likely there’s some base hits. So, very important to be patient. Let the pitcher walk you if you will. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. Get another one. Just missed. T Oscar Hernandez in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. Yell flashes the leather on the running and catch, but this clutch home run gets us even again. All even at five apiece. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Kirby Yates. He comes on for the 35th time this year. Number 38. Kirby Yates. Now, the Brewers cleanup hitter, Jackson Chio. No, this guy a player that if he gets on base has the ability to really be aggressive getting around the base paths. That one in there across the letters a little out front there as he swings through it. The Dodgers bullpen with some action. Tanner Scott, the left-hander, is getting that big fast ball of his ready to go. Trevino, the right-hander, loosening up as well. Now he breaks his bat and there’s one down. Now batting second base. Next for the Brewers, Bryce Terang. 0 for three in this one. That one off the mark. Ball one. And there’s the strike. No need to offer it that pitch until you get to two strikes. It’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch and now two and one. Last couple of pitches breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. And that one fouled off. All tied up. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Down and in. Moved his feet. Strike him out. swing and a ground ball out to short. Two up, two down here in the top of the eighth. Up next for Milwaukee, first baseman, Jake Bowers. Next for Milwaukee, Jake Bowers. Fast ball for a strike. Just missed. The 1-1 is fouled off. Strike him out. And a swing and a miss. And Milwaukee is set down in order. Nobody left for Milwaukee. Our score holds at five apiece. Now back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Grant Anderson. And he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. Here’s Tay Oscar Hernandez. Hernandez. Strike one. Just missed. If he’s able to connect on that, look out. lifted in the air right field and a quick out number one. Now batting second base. So up next Andy Pahy. breaking ball inside and that’s ball one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Eastston McGee appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. And a 10. Little chopper rolls foul. That’s off the mark. Two and one. Line drive. Pulls it down and he makes the catch. And there are two down. Great swing of the bat right there. Trying to get on as that go ahead run. He just wasn’t able to find a hole. And here comes Tommy Edmond. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Next offering is fouled back. Two down, nobody on here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. And now two and two. Nice grab the throw and that’s a nice play to end the inning. Well, that right there was all pre- pitch positioning. Put himself in the perfect spot to make a great play. And welcome back to the ballpark. All set to start the ninth in this one. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Andrew Monisterio Yates back to work. That one is absolutely belted. Ed one hops the wall. Safe at second with nobody out. And that double has the go-ahead run in scoring position. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. That pretty much split the zone down the middle. And those are the ones where you got to make them pay. And a huge opportunity now to grab the lead at this point in the game. Go ahead run on base and here’s the catcher Eric Hos 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. Highf fly ball lifted in the air right field. Hernandez makes the grab. Grounder tags at second and it comes in too late. He’s up to third on the fly out with one away. Up next for Milwaukee, third baseman Anthony Seagler. Digging in, Anthony Seagler. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. Here’s a sackfly situation. And he’s got to make sure he gets the ball out over the plate and get those arms extended. They’re trying to crowd him with the infield in. This be a big pickoff if he can push a run across. Gets him to chase after that one. on the ground to third. Throw to first in time. Well, there’s a lot riding on that at bat right there. Nice job of the pitcher to bear down, make the pitch, get the ground ball. Excellent piece of work. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. Selick up now for the Brewers. And this is a big opportunity for him to pick up his teammate right here. Pitch misses there and it’s one and0. Bottom of the zone and a cold strike. Two outs and a count. One and two. Way inside. Gets out of the way. Two down. Go ahead. Run in scoring position. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. Back door breaking ball just missed right there. And boy, umpire didn’t give him the call. I bet you if he throws it again, hitter knows he’s going to have to swing it. swing and a miss. Struck him out. A lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. And we’re back now. The third baseman, Miguel Rojas. That one missing inside. Movement in Milwaukee’s bullpen. Easton McGee, the right-handed sinker baller. He looks to be readying himself. Fouled off down the right side. Fought off foul. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. And that one is inside. You know, we used to say if you’re scared, get a dog. Throw the fast ball, man. If you’re scared, get a dog, man. Just just get a dog. Cold out on strikes. That was pretty nasty. Yeah, that’s a tough pitch to stay on. You don’t want to get beat inside. And as you see that pitch continue to run away from you, by the time it’s in the catcher’s mid, you think it’s a ball off the plate away. So they’re making a move for a bat off the bench. Hung Kim. And this is a big at bat coming. Definitely a little added pressure on him here. Swung on belted and it gets into the corner but it’s foul. Trying to keep good speed off the bases. Out to short. Monisterio tosses across to first and that quickly two away. Now batting hitter. And next is a designated hitter, James Outman. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. This one smoked out to left and that will end the inning. Dodgers go down quietly and this remains a five ball game. So, the closer summon from the bullpen, Tanner Scott, big swing and miss stuff right here. Boo. Averaging more than one strike out per inning this season. So far, he’s been pretty electric. Dalton rushing. He’s out in left field getting. And now the DH William Contrarus. Wow. That’s 89 on the gun. And it’s a change up. It’s like good hitting if you’re looking for it, but because of the speed differential between the Oh, wow. What a stop. Got him. Nice play. And that may have saved a run. Throw bases have to be so quick with their first step reactions. Hot shots like that. That’s why they call it the hot corner. That’s a perfect example, though. There’s no way he gloves that one if he’s not dialed in, anticipating something coming his way. Staying on his toes every pitch. Really nice job to get back up, set himself, and make a strong throw across the diamond. Yell up to bat next. Lays off for a ball. This one in the air right field. Hernandez ranging after it. Stretches out and hauls it in. Grounder tags at second and he moves up to third. Now two away. Now batting center fielder Jackson Churio. Big spot and here comes Jacksonio. He’s one of the faster guys just by pure sprint speed in the majors. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Late swing fouled all. Well, if he’s going to do something special right here, it’s going to have to happen with two strikes, two outs. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count. One, two. Swing and a miss. 98 mph on the gun. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. Now back here in extras and a new pitcher on the mound in the bottom half of the inning. Easton McGee. Here’s Muki to hit. 0 for four with three strikeouts and a fly out. And there’s no doubt that they’ll feed off the energy from this crowd, right? I mean, yeah, I’d say the intensity level has gone up a few notches for sure. Late swing fouled off. The shorts stop takes a ball. And Muki takes. Pretty easy to give up on that pitch right there. Started on the edge of the plate with the spin. You know it’s going to finish well off the plate. That one outside. Ball three. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. Ball four. He walked in and that keeps things going. Now that next up, the Dodgers catcher Will Smith. And the way he’s going in this one, we’ve been waiting for his spot to come around again. All right, listen everyone. Stop what you’re doing right now. This guy’s got two home runs already. Now he’s going for number three. That one misses. That’s five straight. Way to lay off that pitch down. Winning run out second. No one out. Right through there for a strike. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. That one hooked. Foul. gets a piece and stays alive. Flew open a little bit with that front shoulder, but was able to slow his bat down just enough to make contact with that pitch. Keep the bat alive. That’s to third. Tags the runner over to Bowers. That’s two. Bill, not what you’re expecting right there with your number three hitter at the plate. Looked like it was going to be a big inning. Now you’re going to need a little bit of luck to get that two out RBI across. Freddy Freeman will come up to hit. Known for his he gets the intentional walk here and now a force at any base with two gone. Well, it doesn’t get much easier with this next batter, but I totally understand going with the intentional walk in that spot. He’s just too dangerous at the plate right now. And there’s a base open, so it gives you options defensively to get an out. line drive, base hit, runner around third. The winning run crosses the plate and the Dodgers walk it off in extra innings. Well, you come to the ballpark hoping you’ll see something special that day. Whether you’re a player or a fan, a walk-off win, nobody forgets that. A memorable moment that’ll be logged in the backs of the minds of everybody that witnessed this here today. 65 the final here today. Dave Roberts and company celebrate in the dugout for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB to show. I’m John Shami. Thanks for joining us.
