Michael Jordan: “I won 6 championships, and Bill Russell won 11. Does that make Bill Russell better than me or me better than him? No, because we played at different eras”

  1. MJ has always had his only shred of humility being about the players who came before him.

  2. MJ won 6 and Bron won 4. Does that make MJ or Bron better? No, because they played at different eras

  3. Honestly this whole exercise of trying to find a singular GOAT across eras with such vastly different rules is tedious and inane. They (and Lebron) each optimised to the ruleset of their own era and stand head and shoulders ~~about~~ above their peers. Can we just agree on that and be done with this convo?

  4. While I do think mj had mad respect for some of those who’s came before, he is also a charismatic, intelligent person who knew when to say the right thing.

  5. Do you see this kids? This is what is called being humble and appreciating those who came before you. MJ isn’t shitting on previous eras on a podcast in a circle jerk like we just saw last week.

  6. Media Michael: *Thoughtful, well-spoken response*
Court Michael: FUCKIN DUNK ON THAT BITCH

  7. Who was the best player during their era? I love those debates more. Forget all the all-time GOAT debates.
All these players are trying to be the best against their peers while they’re active. They’re not thinking about how they’ll be compared to past or future players.

  8. Kareem is my goat because he doesn’t give a flying fuck about interviews.

  9. MJ using the Tiger vs Nicklaus comparison is perfect because it illustrates the differences between the two different eras.

Hop over on the r/Golf and people will say Jack with 18 majors is better than Tiger at 15, meanwhile Tiger dominated to such a degree there was a time when Vegas was taking bets on Tiger vs the field and people LOST MONEY betting the field.

Tiger set so many records and changed the game because he followed the same path that MJ did.

At his peak, Tiger was known as a cold person who had limited friends that were all much older than him, they were Father figures filling in for Earl including MJ himself.

    Sound familiar?

Anyways…some would say prime Tiger couldn’t compete with the athletes today, that his game wouldn’t allow the record number of wins.

I’ve seen the same comments about MJ, that without the triangle/Scotty he doesn’t win etc

I grew up watching MJ destroy people routinely, don’t get
me wrong, he had plenty of shit games as well where he legit looked pedestrian, but more often than not he found a way to win.

Tiger won a US Open w/an 18 hole playoff on a broken leg…he had to sink a 12ft putt on 18 to force the playoff, which of course he did.

There’s video of his opponent, Rocco Mediate watching and he said right after “I knew he would make it”

And that’s the expectation everyone had of MJ.

All of this is to say, the GOAT debate is a rather dense and troubling one, LeBron at 4 rings with all those accolades and a career that spans 20+ years is INSANE.

Anyone picking him as the GOAT has an argument just like Jack Nicklaus vs Tiger.

I’m picking MJ and Tiger every time because there’s an air of sheer insanity when it comes to competition that these guys possess.

Tiger is virtually done due to injuries, when asked if he accepted that he wouldn’t get to 18, he said “I’ve accepted that I’m going to get more”.

Which is practically the same message MJ had at his HOF induction where he half joked about coming back at 50…
“Don’t laugh. Never say never. Because limits, like fears, are often just an illusion”

That level of confidence/arrogance or whatever you want to call it is something that can’t be trained and very few have it.

That’s the reason they are the best ever

  10. NBA convos are the dumbest bc we compare players who don’t play against each other, play different positions, played against different competition, in different systems and different teammates and we argue like little children about calling each other names when we disagree.
