You saw something super important in the Pelicans third Summerlink game, but it had nothing to do with the oncourt performance. It was Zion Williamson and Joe Dumar’s talking. I’ll tell you why that matters in today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans. Plus, how did Jeremiah Fears and Derek Queen do? We’re covering it all. Let’s go. You are locked on Pelicans. We are covering the Pelgans third summer league game, a loss to the Portland Trailblazers. But the most important thing from that game was not on the court. There were a couple actually pretty important things on the court, too, with Jeremiah Fears and Derek Queen and some other guys that we’ll get to. But really, it has to do with Zion Williamson and Joe Dumar both sitting courtside talking the whole game. I’ll tell you why this matters because it matters more than you might think. So, we got a lot to cover in today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans. And of course, thank you for making Locked on Pelicans your first listen today and every day. Let me know what you think about the Pelgans 0 and3 so far preseason after losing to the Portland Trailblazers 9387. Better performance from him. We’ll talk about it in a minute here. I want to focus though on Zion Williamson and Joe Dumar looking very engaged with one another throughout the course of this game. You saw constant shots of them there sitting courtside talking and just I don’t know doing whatever. I don’t know what they were talking about. We could probably guess but you saw Joe Dumar showing him his stuff on the phone. The guys laughing. They were clearly not just talking basketball but connecting as people do. And I think that’s a really important thing. You know, I have said that I think the biggest mistake during David Griffin’s tenure was his just inability to connect with Zion Williamson. And look, that has to do with Zion as well as Griff. But eventually, you got to just connect with your franchise player, your star player. And that created some early tension, some early friction between Zion and the team. And that’s probably led to a lot of where we are right now, which is not a particularly great situation for this team to be in. But Joe Jumar has publicly backed Zion Williamson. And I said in yesterday’s show, the everyday heard this, right? I do think they’re going to like be very open to trading him. I’m not saying they will, but I think they’d like to rehab his value and trade him. I truthfully mean that. But right now, they’re they’re in the Zion business. if they want to be good next year and they want to be good because otherwise you don’t trade away a first round an unprotected first round draft pick you need Zion Williamson to be bought in to be healthy to be committed all of the things and if Zion Williamson does that it’s not a guarantee they trade him if he looks so good he can make himself untradable and you know we say this on the day that his contract becomes fully guaranteed so he’s here next year the Pelicans are in the Zion Williamson business. It’s as simple as that. You know, him connecting with Joe Dummars is how you get buyin from Zion Williamson. And I’ve said that’s not the beall endall. He’s had very good relationships with other people. He and Theresa Witherspoon are particularly close, right? I think he and Willie Green have a good relationship, too. Clearly, that doesn’t mean that he’s going to just buy it and go all in. But Joe Dumar has a weight that David Griffin didn’t. Look, David Griffin won a title as an executive. That’s massively important here. So is Joe Dumar. Joe Dumar is also a Hall of Fame player. He has a phenomenal career. You can’t argue with really anything Joe Dumar has done with his playing career at all. And that’s something that’s going to allow him to connect with Zion Williamson in a way that David Griffin couldn’t. David Griffin didn’t play. David Griffin didn’t live that life like Joe Dumars has. So to see them having a good relationship off the bat, to see Zion in Summerly after being in Greece with Jordan Brand and you know doing all those travels, I love to see that. You know, there have been times when he hasn’t shown up to Vegas in the past. So simply the fact of being there is in fact a good thing. I am encouraged by what we’re seeing here. So this is an optimistic reading of it. I’m going to tell you that, you know, we it takes more than just connecting with your lead front office executive to be a good basketball player, right? And, you know, even if they do connect and and kind of match on a human level, right? It doesn’t guarantee that Zion’s going to do all the right things, but it is a big step towards buyin. So, this is important because look, the Pelican season is going to come and go as Zion comes and goes next season. If he’s healthy, they’re going to be good enough. They might not be elite, but they’re not going to be one of the worst teams in the league. If he’s not healthy, then they’re going to be one of the worst teams in the league. Most likely, you can start to still see a future, a vision for this team after Zion Williamson, but if he’s not playing next year, they’re not going to be good. Fears and Queen, as much as they looked more improved in this game, are not ready to like help elevate you in probably as rookies. They’ll get there eventually and we’ll talk about them in the next segment here, but it’s going to take them a little bit. It’s still high on both those players. I think they’re cornerstone pieces going forward, but probably not going to be the reason you get into the playoffs next season based on what we’re seeing in summer league for them. But there’s still room for them to grow this year, too. It’s going to be because of Zion Williamson. So, to see him being engaged and doing all that when look, that hasn’t been the case before, that’s encouraging. That’s what this team needs. Look, he looks in shape. That’s an important thing. Doesn’t always look like that in the offseason. The early returns, let’s call it on the Joe Dumar’s tenure when it comes to Zion Williamson is encouraging and that’s the most important thing for next season. Has nothing to do with any other player. I mean, it has stuff to do with other players. It’s not nothing, right? Trey takes a big leap that’s going to really, you know, take this team far. But Zion is still the unquestionable best player on the roster and they need him to be in the right state. Let’s call it because that’s all-encompassing going into next season. Looking good so far. You know, we’ve said this before. We’ve said this before. This is going to be one of those things where I am skeptical but optimistic about it because this is who they’re going to need to carry them. So Zion just being there, looking engaged, being involved, hanging out with Joe Dumar, that’s great. But look, being friends with your GM is is one thing, right? But Joe Dumar isn’t going to be there wherever Zion’s working out later in the off season when we’ve seen maybe he’s not taking it as seriously as he should. That’s going to be the most important thing. Is he going to do all of this when Joe Dumar isn’t around? Is he going to handle rehab assignments and things like that should an injury arrive in the way that he needs to do? Those are the big questions. It’s always been when there is a bump in the road, when there is some adversity, how does Zion Williamson respond? And the answer hasn’t been great always. There’s been moments when it has been, but it hasn’t been great always. That’s what they need out of him. Maybe this is the first step towards getting there. And this was more important than anything we saw on the court because summer league is not going to be indicative of if this team is going to be good or not. It’s is Zion ready to play? Does Trey take a leap? How does Jordan Pool fit in? Those are the bigger reasons for why this team’s going to be good next season. You saw a glimpse of something, good, bad. I don’t say how it could be bad. Was Zion talking to Joe Dumar’s at summer league here. Let me know what you thought about their chat and how you’re feeling about Zion Williamson going into next season because look, they’re building around him and if he plays well enough, he can be untradable again and you keep building around him. We’ll see what happens this season. So coming up next, next segment, we’re going to look at both fears and queen in the next segment. That’s coming up here next. In today’s episode of Lockdown Pelicans, I thought they played much better. I’ll tell you what I saw from them. That’s coming up next. Look, I don’t care about going 0 and3. I don’t care if they win or lose a game in summer league. Winning a game would be nice, don’t get me wrong, but like h whatever. It doesn’t matter to me here. I’m looking at how the guys are playing and we’re going to obviously focus on Jeremiah Fears and Derek Queen. That’s when it comes to summer league the two most important people to look at. This was a better game for both of them despite combining for 14 turnovers between the two of them in this game. Same number they combined for in the first game. What? Let’s start with Jeremiah Fierce who got ejected in this game which is just the ejection was stupid. I’m not going to get upset over a summer league ejection but okay let’s get the officiating stuff started real early this year. Fears finished with 14 points on six of 11 shooting 0 for one from deep. two from two of three from the line, two rebounds, one assists, two steals, six turnovers, three fouls, but overall, I thought he played better. You know, the they’re not using him quite like a quintessential point guard in summer league right now. They want him to just play downhill and attack and figure out how to finish at the NBA level. And you’ve heard the coaching staff say that, too. And you know, in the first couple of games, you saw him getting to the rim. You saw him using his agility, his speed, his bag to get to the rim and he struggled to finish. He finished better in this game. You saw positive growth from him in that regard. This is someone who’s clearly learning and growing game by game in summer league. That’s what you’re partially looking for here. The NBA skill is get downhill, get shots at the rim. The next level from that is convert those shots to buckets or get fouled and go to the line, which he’s done at times before. So, he’s showing off the NBA skill and improving that NBA skill just in three games. That’s highly encouraging, I think, when it comes to looking at Jeremiah Fierce. You saw dunks from him. You saw a blown dunk where he looked like he wanted to kill a person, which was awesome. But you saw the finishing. He needs to get a little bit stronger. He needs to be able to finish through contact a little bit more, particularly as a slightly undersized guard. I definitely think he’ll be able to do that, right? Like, you’re not expecting that from him right now. You’ve heard a lot of people say his NBA comp is now Kyrie Irving. I think that’s an extremely good comp to have. Obviously, Irving is maybe one of the best finishers we’ve ever seen, ever seen at the NBA level. I don’t know if Fear is going to reach that kind of heights. If he does, that’s a home run of a pick. Obviously, Kyrie Irving is going to be a Hall of Famer. But you’re seeing him, you know, create space, find creases to attack. you know, he has a herkyjerkiness to his game, like a little stuttery, stopand go moves that he can pull out that I absolutely love. He is going to be able to finish at the NBA level, and that is a very good sign for what you want to see. And look, I like that chippiness from him. You know, him and Queen have kind of gotten into it in in every game, it seems like, with with opposing players. You know, the first technical that Jeremiah Fears got in this game was him like going back and forth with the Portland Trailblazers summer league head coach. You know, do you need to be doing that? Maybe not. But it’s kind of fun to watch him do this. The second technical was BS in my opinion. But I like that he literally zero fears, right? Doesn’t back down. This team has needed a degree of an edge to it, right? And Joe Dumar’s playing on the bad boy Pistons and that kind of and creating that unheralded 04 Pistons team. That’s a rather important quality that he looks for. That like junkyard dog, tenacious mentality, never back down kind of thing. You have that quality in fierce. That’s something Joe Dumar is definitely going to like. I think that’s something that look just all fans of the team are going to like too. It’s impossible not to like a dude that like is ready to go. We love Naji Marshall for that sort of thing, right? So, I think that is a quality you like to see and that’s definitely been shown from fears and summer. Like the finishing has gotten better in this game. the assist and the passing will, you know, will come with time. He’s more of an opportunistic passer than like a Chris Paulesque point guard passer, but he’s going to be able to create for others. And that’s all you’re looking for your point guard to do. Create for others, particularly by playing downhill, which I love. Draw two to the ball, there will be an open man. Guys need to convert their shots, which is not something New Orleans has been doing in summer league so far, right? They shot sub 40% in this game. They shot under 16%, 15.8% from three. It’s tough to get assists when guys miss shots. Three of 19 from three-point range. Ain’t going to get it done, simply put. But you’ll see what you need to see from Fears. And the main skill is attack the basket. He’ll be able to do that in the NBA next season. I love to see that from him. So that was overall, I thought, a very good performance from him. The turnovers, look, let him figure this stuff out. Totally fine. You can still see he’s trying to figure out what speed do I play at at the NBA. And that’s definitely throwing some rhythm and timing off for him. You know, he doesn’t have, you know, the lob bigman that you want in maybe Zion Williamson and Queen and Mei. Queen’s not going to be a lob threat. Mi can be. They need a little bit of that. And, you know, it just hasn’t been there in summer league. I think it’ll be different at the NBA level when you have guys like Trey Murphy out there, Jordan P out there to help space the court a little bit. The court spacing has looked like crap for the Pelicans essentially in summer league and he’s still getting to the rim. That says something. That says something. That’s a good quality to have. I like what we saw from Jeremiah Fears in this one. This was also Derek Queen’s best performance in summer league by far. Even with eight turnovers, 17 points on five of 11 shooting, seven for eight from the free throw line, five offensive boards, five defensive boards. So another double double for him. Three assists, one steal, two blocks, eight turnovers, three personal fouls. Look, 17 points on 11 shot attempts is phenomenal efficiency here. And you saw the offense run through him. You can see the playmaking from him. He is certainly not a court spacer. He’s not a vertical spacing threat either. So like a lob threat, a guy in the dunker spot. That might create some fit problems with him and Zion, but we’ve seen Zion be able to deal with that in the past. So I’m not overly concerned. you know, I don’t think the Pelicans are going to have good spacing this year. So, they’re going to need guys to that can kind of find those creases like Fierce, and Zion is capable of doing that as well. So, I think he can end up being a little bit okay with all of that. What I loved in this game though from Derek Queen is you could argue he outplayed and I think he probably did outplay uh Yan Hansen, the rookie uh big man big center that the Portland Trailblazers traded up and traded a future first to go and get him. By the way, you know, they trade or um yeah, it was a future first, I think. I can’t remember now. He outplayed him. You know, Hansen is a guy that I think has drawn kind of rave reviews in summer league so far. He’s been one of the standout players where he went from like, wait, wait, wait, was that a a weird pick to maybe they got a steal there in Portland, but he outplayed him. He held his own against him defensively. You saw him force miss shots. You saw him force uh couple turnovers on Hansen as well, you know. And then on the other end, he was able to score over him, too. Yeah, Hansen had a couple of blocks and, you know, did some damage as well. He scored 15 points on 13 shot attempts. He made a couple of three threes in this game, but really Derk Queen outplayed him. This was the real big test in my opinion for Derrick Queen going against another rookie that, you know, had big question marks about him, too. And I think Derek Queen won that battle. You saw him finish through traffic. You saw him get offensive boards, get fouled, get in ones in the in, you know, in traffic in the paint. You saw him trying to kind of create his own shot, too. But you saw the facilitating the passing. You know, you saw he’s been a decent defensive rebounder for this team overall. I’ve thought in summer league so far. You saw him do enough of that out here on the court. Wasn’t incredible at it in this game, but overall they they looked pretty good when it came to that. So when you look at these guys kind of playing the way they did, I feel optim more optimistic than I have. This was kind of the game that I wanted to really judge Derek Queen on where, hey, you’re out going up against another rookie that you’re going to be compared to. Hansen was drafted 16th, Queen was drafted 13th. You’re going to need to outplay him. You know, look, I was ready to come in with the hottakey show potentially of, you know, other rookie out other rookie big man outplays Derk Queen, which would not have been a fun headline to use, but that’s not the case, right? Like, it wasn’t the case. That’s not what happened in this game. Very pleased with what we saw from Derek Queen in this one. Again, like the chippiness from him as well, scoring on on Hansen on the offensive end, beating him on the defensive side of the ball, too. Just kind of providing an all-around very very good game. Couple other guys had good performances, too. That’s Antonio Reeves. That’s Ben Lester Kenyon in the in summer league as well. And Keon Brooks Jr. as well. Let’s talk about them because the Pelicans have kind of a tough choice to make with their final open roster spot. Let’s analyze that. Who gets it? Might be a trick question. I’ll tell you why. That’s coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans. And thank you for making Locked on Pelicans your first listen today and every day. I love all the offseason workouts, team building. Please be good next year, Saints. Ross Jackson of Locked On Saints is going to tell you whether they’re going to be or not. Part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. Make him your second listen today. So, the Pelons have an interesting dile. I don’t know if it’s really a dilemma, choice to make when it comes to their 15th roster spot. They have 14 guys on standard contracts. You have one open roster spot. They had waved Antonio Reeves earlier in the offseason. There’s no need to guarantee his contract. He’s looked good in summer league, right? Like he looks like a guy who got NBA minutes last season. 18 points for him. Eight of eight from the free throw line, though. 0 for four from three. But 18 points on 11 shot attempts is great. He’s looked very good. Lester Kenyonz has looked good, too. He had an offshooting night in this one. Just eight points, two of seven shooting, 0 for five, but six rebounds, three assists. He’s been good. Keon Brooks Jr. had his best game in summer league too. 16 points for the Pelicans in this one. Five rebounds, an assist, a steal, five of eight from the free throw line, five of nine overall from the field. The Pelicans have a choice of what they need to do with that 15th overall spot, right? You could give it to one of those guys. You know, if you had to pick one, it would probably be Antonio Reeves, I think, just because he’s shown he can be an offball scorer, a guy that fits in really well around Zion Williamson. Selfishly, you know, this is someone that I was high on in last draft. thought they would get him undrafted, but they traded up in the into the second round to get him. I was thrilled about that. I think he’s a guy that can really contribute to the box score with the second unit. You don’t want him maybe being in your top like 10 rotation guys, but if he’s there as 11 or 12, that’s a useful depth piece to have. He’ll be cheap as well. That’s rather important, but they at least need to look at getting him on a two-way or something along those lines. So, I don’t know if he would take a two-way contract at this point in time, but he’s definitely an option there, you know, but if you want to go on the wing, Lester Kenyonz, Keon Brooks Jr., both guys that, you know, have been with the team. Kenyonz on the two-way last year carrying over to this year has looked pretty good. You could probably keep him on a two-way, but he’s shown that he can give you some more wing depth where you can just never have enough of that. Keon Brooks Jr., is someone who’s been kind of around the team for a little while now, whether it’s with Birmingham or with the Pelicans on various two-ways or it feels like I’ve liked what we’ve seen from him, too. But maybe you don’t put anybody there. You know, I don’t think the Pelicans are necessarily done tweaking this roster. You’ll start to get more trades and things like that in the next month or so as we get a little bit closer to training camp. September is when you kind of next see transactions. It’ll be quiet the remainder of July and August most likely and then things pick up a little bit then it quiets down before training camp and then things really kind of get going throughout the season as you build up towards the trade deadline. You know, keeping that roster spot open could be useful for the team if you make an unbalanced trade where you are bringing two players back but only sending one out, whatever that deal might look like. I’m not trying to put fake trades out into the universe right now, but I wonder if the Pelicans are keeping that roster spot open just to have that flexibility to make a move like that and not have to just wave somebody and then eat their salary because they need a roster spot, which isn’t ideal for a team that’s kind of pushing the luxury tax a little bit. So, I think there’s potential to that. You know, maybe you just don’t need to add anybody to it. And I think that’s maybe the direction that they’re leaning. Right now, the Pelicans have about $4.2 $2 million to the luxury tax based off my calculations. You know, if you were to sign someone for a $2 million vet minimum or something like that, that’s going to make you wonder what it would look like all of a sudden. Then you’re 2.4 or 2.2 million from the luxury tax. That might not be ideal for a team that wants to make a trade during the season to upgrade their roster. Potentially, if you take back more money, it’s really limiting what you’re capable of doing. So, it could hamper flexibility. And flexibility is something this team needs to prioritize a little bit. You know, if they’re not good this coming year, if they are bad, you know, you need to probably become a seller in some capacity at the trade deadline. So, you might need that open roster spot. You might need to take some more money back. or if it turns out your your Zion’s healthy and playing excellent basketball, you might want to go more in to maximize a healthy year from him because that would be a waste otherwise. If your roster is not good enough, but he’s healthy and playing at an all-star level, you probably do need to make a trade that sends future draft capital out. Even if you don’t like what Joe Dumar did at the draft to, you know, acquire a player that’s going to help push you over the top. Maybe it’s just to get out of the play in tournament spots or what have you. you’re going to need some flexibility for that too. And so maybe keeping that spot open would be smart. But I do think Antonio Reeves should be the leader for that final spot as they probably try and figure out exactly what to do with him because I think he has looked pretty good in summer league. But maybe you value the flexibility more. What do you think the Pelicans should do with that 15th roster spot? Keep it open. Sign any of those guys? Look, let’s rule out Chris Paul. Do you go after Russell Westbrook or another guard? Let me know in the comments down below on YouTube. So, that’s going to do it for this episode of Locked On Pelicans. Another summer league game tomorrow. Maybe the Pelicans are going to get a win, maybe not. We’ll find out. I’m looking forward to watching that one. We will recap it here. Ever got darn dayer
Tbh the pelicans should start Derek queen at the 5 next to Zion
Missi better lock in
Queens gonna be a star
Derik queen and fears are the future! Missi went 1/11 was awful I’d look to trade him for a stretch center
Missi finishing touch around the basket is a D-, 1 on 1 defense is a D-, basketball IQ D-, post scoring F only thing he’s got is help defense rim protection even his rebound isn’t elite just average to a little bit above average at best
Every dayer!
0-3 but clearly getting better. Again, what is important is the performance of 3 players (Missi, Fears, Queen).
We can throw in the Peavy/Reeves, even Quinones watch.
I think Dickinson will be cut of the two-way contract.
Man, Fears almost had the dunk of summer league. His defensive effort and awareness also picked up, and his length was apparent on that side a couple times.
derrick queen cant play center in the NBA. NBA is too big, he would have a better advantage at 4. he also has to shoot consistent threes to stay on the court cause his defense is below average rn
I'm pretty hopeful on Pels this year. Let's go team!!!
Everydayer. I understand why the talks of being good this year but let's temper expectations. Fears and Queen are the future and they need time to develope. That said, Loon and Poole will help. Bey has good size for a 4. But the 5 is a concern for me. May be soft down low.
How do you defend Williamson? You back off of him on the perimeter and dare him to drive.
How do you defend Fears? You back off of him on the perimeter and dare him to drive. "Kira" Fears cannot shoot…period!!!
It's one thing to dare a locomotive to drive; it's a whole other matter to dare a "Smurf" to drive,

Missi has devolved. If he can't individually dominate against the talent at this level, what will he do against the Wemby's…the Joker's…the Sengun's…the JJJ's…the Gobert's…etal of the league? Thank God we picked up Looney.
Sidenote: Interesting that Jake made no mention of Missi in the game recap. He should have been a major talking point.
Sidenote 2: It won't take much improvement for Karlo to pass Missi on the depth chart. Just Sayin'
Dav ain't black.
I see a lot of people never play basketball before I see potential in these players. YES!!! They have their flaws but with time that can be fixed just look at Bron when he first came in the League he wasn't a good three-point shooter but years down the line he's a major threat from the 3 now

Worst team in summer league. Worst team in regular season. Simply put not enough talent.
If Zion is playing, this is a 40 plus win team. Missi is trying to create his own shot, which is not his game. They will be ok. Queen is a good rebounder. He has 3 months to add strength and conditioning. Queen look like the best player maker for the summer league team.
When the rookies play with the veterans they won't have to worry about defenses focusing on them. They will have space to operate and get better shots
We had 26 turnovers in 40 minutes. Way way way too many!
Queen has 10 plus rebounds in each game. That's was a problem last year.
Mark my words , Queen will be the biggest mistake draft wise the Pels will have maked the past 10 years, this team will be in the lottery again next year in a better draft with no 1st round pick
Zion being present at Summer League has probably been our biggest highlight of Summer League‼️
They need at least 1, maybe 2 more bigs that pose somewhat of an offensive threat besides Zion. More rebounds, more assists, more savvy. Dreadfully weak at 5. Looney is not the answer, but at least he's a proven serviceable backup as a real center. Trade at least one of the many undersized bigs they have available…Missi at the top of that list.
Everyone knows that Zion is the main player on the court. Just so he is on the court what counts.
Hi Jake
The blazers traded back to 16 for an unprotected magic first round pick and 2 seconds. They didn’t trade a future pick to move up. DQ did good vs Yang 1v1 but I thought Yang clearly played a better game overall.
Jake, this is by far the best optimistic show you've done Since I don't know when I'm back to hearing what you report.
Too fat for his feet. Nobody cares about this lazy, over hyped idiot- except the Pelicans. What kind of name is the Pelicans, anyway???🤣
