On top of the five current Padres who are here, there are seven players who were at one time part of the organization at this year’s All-Star game.

Those seven: Megill, Muñoz, starting pitcher MacKenzie Gore and outfielder James Wood of the Nationals, starting pitcher Max Fried of the Yankees, Astros closer Josh Hader and Athletics designated hitter Brent Rooker.

Brewers closer Trevor Megill sat next to Tatis during the Home Run Derby on Monday night.

A good portion of the time, they talked about old times.

They spent half the 2018 season together playing for Double-A San Antonio. From that team arose six eventual All-Stars — Megill, Tatis, reliever Andrés Muñoz (Mariners, 2024 and ‘25), first baseman Ty France (Mariners, 2022), and first baseman Josh Naylor (Guardians, 2024). Tatis is the only one to be named an All-Star while playing for the Padres. Megill and Tatis also both played in the Padres system with Pirates reliever David Bednar (an All-Star for the Pirates in 2022 and ‘23), though at different times.

  1. For what it is worth, Preller didn’t draft Fried, he only traded him away lol. But he has an eye for talent.. it is just sometimes you keep the right ones and sometimes you trade them away. Cost of getting proven talent.

  2. AJ knows how to draft talent, no question. A World Series would set him apart from the rest.

  3. Hey, other GMs, look at this. You trade with the Padres, and you are likely to get all stars back. They may not be top 100 prospects now, but our guy AJ knows how to find talent.

  4. He sure knows how to pick em, which is why for just one trade deadline I don’t want him to go all in, but plan for the next couple of years. 🙏🏽

  5. Having lots of players from the Padres organization play in the All-Star game is nothing new. What is new is that we had so many who are on the current roster.

  6. We probably would have won a WS if someone else was handling the actual roster.

  7. You know how to take the talent….

You just dont know how to *hold* the talent.
