I don't want to read between the lines. F Cancer. I want Ryno to enjoy every game of the second half.

  1. That reads like a guy that knows his time on earth is coming to an end soon. He was my favorite player growing up. Sad to see

  2. This sounds like Ryno for “I’m fighting like hell but the prognosis is bad.” Absolutely sucks. One of the all time great people to play the game.

  3. This very much sounds like a soft way to tell us it’s bad and he’s focusing on quality vs. quantity. In his shoes, I’d likely do the same. Ryno truly one of a kind.

    Also, fuck cancer.

  4. We miss you at Wrigley, Ryno! You will always be in our hearts, our memories of you are cherished, our support is unwavering. Be strong, fight like hell friend!

  5. He’s been so taciturn his whole career, it makes it almost harder to hear him speak from his heart at all. I hope he finds strength in the outpouring of love and support he’s been getting.

  6. We’ll always love you, Ryno. A big reason I learned to love baseball at such a young age. Keep fighting.

  7. Watching Espys now and I was hoping Ryno was gonna come out for the Jimmy V and say he’s cancer free again. Love Ryno, one of the best to put on the Cubs uniform.

  8. I’m hoping I’m just assuming incorrectly and overreacting, but my heart sank when I read this. It just wasn’t Ryno’s usual optimistic self. I’ve dealt enuf with cancer personally and professionally to know patients can have some pessimistic low times that have nothing to do with their prognosis bc chemo & radiation are a bitch. Hopefully he’s just having a tough time right now but will fight his way through it. Till then, pray pray pray🙏

  9. Aww I have his baseball card on the top of a pile on the dinner table – surfaced a set I was given as a fan giveaway at a game in the 80s, he was always my favorite. So sweet to hear he’s still around and watching the games wow

  10. My favorite player of all time. The reason I love baseball and the Cubs. Breaking my heart.

  11. In 1984 or 85 I got a chance to catch and hit balls with Ryno and few other players from the Cubs, on the Wrigly diamond.

I had won a contest from Sylvan Learning centers for some reason, I can’t clearly remember why.

He was a hero to many kids my age during his time on the field. All I can say is, keep fighting if you can or want to, and also enjoy a full retirement and time with you family. You deserve it.

  12. His hall of fame speech was one of the greatest moments I’ve listened to. Ryno i wish you a miracle

  13. Just because you choose to not be on blood thinners, or stool softeners, or steroids, or have tubes… Just because you’re tired of the face in the mirror not being you…

You’re not giving up the fight. You’re passing the torch, and we fight after you’re gone, forever. Put that shit on my back, bro, my legs won’t buckle. And together we move forward.

  14. This breaks my heart! Flew in last summer when they revealed his statue. My heartthrob when I was 13, my hero at 53. He’s the reason I bleed Cubs blue.
