And uh okay, let’s go ahead and let’s start with the talk about the summer league game. We’re going to get into uh details on why if you’re a Pelicans fan, you should not be getting so upset about what’s going on right now. I’ll tell you about that in a couple minutes. But first, we going to dive into last night’s summer league game. Game started mad late and ridiculous. I don’t know what was going on with that. But, uh, one thing you can know about the Pelicans, boy, you going to get some isolation basketball. That’s one thing we know about the Pelicans. you won’t go get a heavy dose of ISO basketball. I don’t know what’s this team fascination with ISO basketball. But you know, once again, last night the Pelicans uh while it was a compelling game for the most part up until the fourth quarter, uh the Pelicans lost another one to the Portland Trailblazers. And you know, there’s a lot of things to talk about. And again, I we got to look at it like this. This is summer league. Okay, this is summer league. All right. Some people are too too too wrapped up in this. Some of y’all are too a little too wrapped up. You got to settle down a little bit. All right. It’s all about watching these players develop. All right. And of course, one of the first players we need to talk about first of all is Jeremiah Fears. All right. Jeremiah Fears once again uh put up double uh had I think he had 14 points, you know, in the game and stuff like that. And you know, you can say it was a good game for him, but I I say it wasn’t a good game for him because once again, he was a turnover machine. Uh I think he had like seven turnovers if I’m not mistaken in the game. And something he said uh that went viral a couple of days ago. It’s sticking out to me and I hope he’s paying attention and I hope the Pel’s front office is paying attention to the statement that he said. and he said basically that he wants to be a top two point guard of all time. He wants to be a top two point guard of all time. Now, that’s that’s good words you want to hear from your from from your first round pick. That’s good words you want to hear. That’s lofty goals you want to achieve. But if you want to be a great point guard, you got to learn you got to pass the ball, fam. And again, he’s going to learn that. He’s going to learn that. He’s that’s going to continue to develop. But his stat line last night was 14 points, six turnovers, and one assist. One assist. A lot of attacking. And my thing is, you don’t have to attack as much when you got bigs like Queen and Missy down there. You know, you don’t you shouldn’t have to attack and clog up the lanes the more. Try to feed them the ball a little bit more. Again, he’s going to learn that. He’s going to get better with time over that with with that. So, you know, but if you want to be a top two of point guard of all time, you got to be able to pass the ball. You I don’t care what your top two, top five list of point guards is, one thing they all have in common is they pass the ball. They they they got assist. Okay? A lot of assist. They might not have as many as Stockton and Malone, but Stockton anyway, but assist they’re okay. So, again, he’s going to get better with time with that. He’s going to get better with time with that. And and also you shouldn’t panic as a Ps fan for for a reason. You know, you should feel hopeful that at least we know we got a scoring machine that’s willing to attack, that’s willing to take over the game. But you also should be happy if you’re a Pel fan because you got Derek Queen. It seems like now it seems as you see the story starting to grow. We talked about this in the last video. The story is starting to grow that people starting to believe in this kid now. walking double double machine another 17 and 10 but also he had three assists and two blocks. He had more assist than fears which shows again if your fears you shouldn’t have to be so rough in attacking. You shouldn’t have to keep feeling like you got to attack attack. Feed the man the ball. And you saw some of that last night. You saw some of that last night. He was trying to give him the ball in certain situations. And can’t can y’all tell these NBA players to stop trying to dribble through double teams? What? What? What is with that? Anyway, these kids don’t try to I’m going to try to drive the hole and you see the hole collaps and there with two guys on you. I’m not going to kick it out. I’m going to try to get through that. Settle down. Settle down. Settle down. But Queen again, it seems like this the the you know, the national media now starting to buy back into this kid. Uh starting to see why uh they took the risk with him. Still not a starter. Still not still not night one ready. which we’ll get into in a minute. He’s not night one ready, but uh you can if you if he’s giving you this type of energy off the bench and in and in these minutes, then you got to love it. You got to love it. You got to feel great about that. Uh and also and then one more thing about and I wanted to go back this about Jeremiah Fizz as well. He’s got to recognize this as well. You’re in summer league, okay? You’re going up against guys that’s playing for two-way or trying to just get on a roster and trying to eat. So, you got to understand that the competition out there is gonna be fierce. And we saw that boys was getting ejected last night and I think several games boys was getting tossed and thrown out. It’s starting to get real out there because, you know, time is running out and if you ain’t winning, you know, you ain’t going into the to the tournament. Especially now the Pelicans, they know they ain’t going into that into the tournament. So if you’re in not in there and you don’t have a chance of getting in there, dudes is going to play you tough and hard and rugged and raw. So if you’re a Jeremiah F, you got to be able to see that and be able to say, you know what, let me try to use my my my court vision and and facilitate the ball cuz these dudes is hungry, man. Boys is hungry out there and they want to win, man. But shout out to DQ, man, because again, he again he continues to impress uh continues to improve and again nothing to worry about with him. Nothing to worry about with him at all in my opinion. Another player that I’m not worried about, but I saw them trying to get active with on the offense last night was Eve Missy. Still lacking in the offense department. I saw one of the plays, I think the two points, the one shot that he did make. Uh it was and it was funny to me because I remember seeing him practice that same shot in the workout video I saw him in a couple of weeks ago. And so I saw him hit that shot. I was like, “Okay, at least he’s trying to do something.” But, uh, I I have now reduced my thought on this. I do think that Mi cannot start on night one. I I I I just unless unless he continues to improve in camp, but I I would prefer his offensive I need some more offensive output, so I would rather go with Looney at this point at the five going into opening night. Uh but uh you know is is he’s still like I say still raw but it’s still someone you can build around in the future and let him continue to develop. Uh also great job again with Austin Peavey and Reeves. I think I think I would like to see a third line being led with Peavey and Reeves in the regular season. That’s just my opinion. That’s just my thoughts on it. I I think you I think you put in a third line with Reeves and Peavey. I think that’s I think you can you can maintain or if you even have to call up an injury situation for a backup situation, either one of these guys would fit the mold. Peavey once again with fantastic defense uh uh all night long stayed in front of guys. Ree of course walking bucket getting the man his contract back man so he can make this Lamborghini payment fam. go ahead and get the man a contract back so he can make his Lamborghini payment. But one thing I need one of the things and I’m I’m coming to all this to say this about this summer league team. Even though they’re winless, there’s no reason for you to panic if in the pals if you’re if you’re a fan of this team because at the end of the day, we’re going in with a core that essentially won you down there 50 games a season ago. And if the and we’ve said this repeatedly over and over again, if this team is healthy, it could get you to the playoffs. If this team is healthy, so what does that So why why am I saying you shouldn’t worry? Well, Joe Dumar finally is had an interview and spoke out on uh what’s going on with the team. He talked to Mark uh fears and he talked about a whole bunch of different things. But one of the things that stood out to me in the statement that he made was both of these guys talking about Queen and Fierce had potential to grow into great players, but I also wanted to build a team that didn’t put all the pressure on them that they have to come in and prove that they’re great in day one. I want them to be able to develop into great players without trying to force it from day one. It’s why you see the roster built the way we did it. And that’s uh shout out to uh Mark Spears and Anscape. So that’s why you shouldn’t panic about what’s going on in summer league with the spells team because none of these kids are going to be pushed into the fire on day one. Okay. In that interview, uh Dumar spoke on uh the roster and why he built it the way he did. He looked at the core and he made it clear that that core is Zion, Trey Murphy III, Herb Jones and and Murray. He said to him that is the core. He said so he say he wanted to build around that core. Again, so something I said before, not with older veteran guys, but with guys that are similar age to Zion Williamson or younger because then you can start building towards the future while still keeping that core in place. you got this core locked in in place for at least the next two years guaranteed and and uh just about and when and uh Zion trade Herb and Murray. So he said he went on to explain that’s why you went and got a Jordan Pool and and a Kevon Looney and a Sadique Bay to sort of shore up some more of that depth space for them and then you fill it out with rookies that could take the mantle when in in two years time. So again, no need to panic just because they ain’t won nothing this summer league. What’s going on right now is they are evaluating these guys to find out their individual roles and how they fit on this roster. Right now I continue to say that that Antonio Ree has played his way back onto this roster. I think Lester Konis after last night’s performance, I didn’t see much. Uh he fell off the charts. And big shout out to uh once again Christian Shoemate. There were only three Pelicans players that were in uh that were in pluses in the plus minus ratings and that was Derek Queen, Chase Hudson who only got nine minutes to play and Shoemate who was a plus 13 and has seven rebounds. He had seven rebounds. Now he only had two points but had seven rebounds. Again, rebounding. If you can get this guy to give you that kind of money, that that kind of production in the time that he’s in, he can barely I think he you should hang on to him and see if you can play his way into his roster or put him on a two-way or some sort. That’s just my thoughts on that, man. Like, like I think I think as a Pel fan, we got to settle down and stop expecting these these rookies to come out on day one cuz they’re not going to be out there on day one. I just read a statement to you from Joe Dumar. We are not trying to put the pressure on these kids day one. We going in with what we got is already the core. We got the core signed through at least the next two to three years. I think Herb is the only one who’s been longest extended at now at five. But his his contract is at least two years at 103 million. If things don’t work out in them two years or whatever whatever with Herb, which I doubt will happen, I think this will stay then you can get out that contract before you start paying them $20 million. This team, I’ll say it again, is built to win and and and at least get into the playoffs this season. So, don’t stress out about these rookies and how they’re playing right now. They are here to develop them and they’re going to develop. Queen is almost there as because if you notice in the second quarter of that game at some point that boy I saw it in his eyes that boy saw that court and said, “I got this. I got this now. I got I think I got this figured out on how at least I could play offense and and he started cooking. He had Yang on hurting for a few minutes there before had him on the bench taking some If you saw Hansen, what is that? Yang Hansen, I think his name is. Uh the guy from uh uh Portland. You saw him on that bench, you saw him, you he was giving him the business. So at certain points, but he he went off and still did well. That was a great pick up by Poland. Y’all got to give Poland their props on that guy. Um, but at the same time, we don’t we shouldn’t be panicking. All right. What are your thoughts about what’s going on with the Pels right now? Do you believe in the core? Do you believe in the core or do you want these rookies to get out there and get some minutes in in the regular season as soon as night one begins? What are your thoughts on that? Clap back with your thoughts in the comments. And uh yeah, man. Pel’s got one more game in summer league and then it’s on to training camp in Australia and everywhere else. But we’ll keep you updated on what’s going on with the New Orleans Pelicans and keep the conversation going right here on Pelicans Digest. It’s Mels talking about them Pels. I catch you next time.

  1. The way it looks, Queen is more pro ready, if he cut down the TO's, he gonna be nice, Fears just need to slow down and play team ball until the fame slows down, no panic my way, just waiting for Borrega to take over

  2. Pelicans digest, good commentary good analysis. When most guards from college level to the NBA. They seen people like Kyrie Irving go through double teams. It’s not a fundamental move, but if you can do it like Kyrie does then I guess they figured they could do that and it ends up being a turnover or loss possession. Something he had to learn, but my question is is the young Center you have already Missy? Is he better than Dairy Queen? In my opinion, I don’t think so.

  3. Winless! Don't panic? Cause its a summer league thing. Okay, but aren't all the teams summer leagues. And it appears that the team or coach needs to settle down. Stop the madness bruh. If other teams are growing mentally allllready, then why can't the Pels? Whatever though, its still a coaching thing. Maybe they will come around, maybe not. Missi still has a lot to learn. I see no change from last year

  4. Yeah I think it's pathetic that the Benson Media Group hypes up this trash team through the media selling false hope. They been bad for over a decade and now it looks like it's gonna be another decade and these guys Pelican Brief, Pelican Daily, and Locked On all paid by the pelicans to sell false hope. The team looks worse this year then last year plus we lost whatever hope for next year…Gayle needs to sell the team or surround herself with competent people these ain't them Willie Green is trash he might be a good godly man, but as a head coach he is a loser on many levels

  5. I see Poole making the all star game this year since he had a career year. Then you add the facts that he isn’t on a tanking team being double teamed every play while being put on minutes restrictions, so the Wiz can play G Leaguers 35+ minutes. Then you look & see JP statistically had the ball in his hands less as an #1 option than he did on a championship team with the 2 greatest shooters in league history, a former #1 overall pick & one of the best passing forwards in the league. I just don’t see how Murray doesn’t get moved if JP does what is expected 🤷🏾‍♂️

  6. Bruh I don't blame Fears ain't no plays being called and to be fair Messi ain't catching that pick and Roll, plus whoever touches the ball do them so he got to get him

  7. Those guys have only been together for a week. Don’t expect any wins. Just hope each individual gets a little better.

  8. The summer league team is just like the main team. No balance, rim protection, floor spacing and perimeter shot making and also very bad assist to turnover ratio.

  9. Losing is a mentally! Yes summer league counts especially for the Pelicans. No need to go undefeated but at least COMPETE! Same lame anemic offense. ISO ball w/ no heart and passion in the paint nor the perimeter. Fears don’t have to pass the ball like Stockton in the 80s getting 10 assist. Today’s PGs are positionless and they attack defenses scoring, assists and by applying pressure

  10. "Isolation basketball", means they dont have good offensive plays. Willie has been lacjking in manybareas, but play calls have been by far the worst. They need new offensive plays, a complete overhaul. Zion needs fuys moving more, around him, cutting to the basket. This high screen and role is not an offense, its almost an isolation style play. Come on Pels wake up!

  11. Derik Queen footwork and touch around the rim very nice. he big man with a handle and he also very good playmaker & Rebounder ! I’m comfortable to start Derik queen at the 5 next season . Easily can say he is the best big man out this draft ! At that Pelicans traded up to grab him with the 13th pick
