In response to this post (from this article), there were a few fun comments, and it was suggested we should do an all-time "Remember Some Guys" team, so after I spent way too much time making the graphic, here it is.

"Remember Some Guys" started at Deadspin awhile back when some guys there started remembering some guys. What's a Guy? Well, there's no set criteria for a Guy to be remembered. They're players from the past that you don't think of that much, but occasionally pop into your head, usually to get a low score on Immaculate Grid. Generally, they're not too good or too famous. If we're talking about the Bulls, then Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen aren't Guys (nor is some random G-leaguer who played one game for the Bulls), but Randy Brown, Jud Buechler, and Bill Wennington? Definitely Guys. If you had to list as many players as you could, they might not be low-hanging fruit, but you've heard of them, and might eventually get to them.

So here's how I'm proposing this will go:

  • Each day for the next week or so, I'll post this and the results from the previous day, and the team thus-far assembled, along with that day's position. We'll do pitchers at the end.
  • Anyone can post a top-level comment nominating one (and only one) player as the most "some guy" to play that position for the Cubs. If you want to nominate more than one person, post them in separate comments. Upvote the players you think best-embody being "Some Guy".
  • I'm envisioning an entire 25-man roster, since we've had far more "guys" than superstars. The most upvoted Guys (if multiple people post the same Guy, I'll try to add them up) will be the opening day starting lineup. I'll keep a note of the honorable mentions, and make a bench, and we'll do starters and relievers separately, and assemble a full staff. We won't vote on a DH, since that hasn't been around very long, but we'll take the player with the most votes and didn't win a starting job elsewhere as the DH. Maybe we'll even do a manager.
  • No rule set in stone for how long they had to have spent on the team, but this is "oh yeah, I remember that Guy", and not "who??", so probably no one who got called up for 2 weeks to replace an injured starter, and was never seen again. A good guideline might be to favor people who spent at least the equivalent of a full season on the team
  • Nominees should be primarily known for playing the position they're being nominated for, so career ERA leader Anthony Rizzo can't be nominated for pitcher (and he's not even a Guy…at least not to me), and Gold Glove snub Travis Wood can't be nominated for outfielder. Other than pitchers going at the end, I'll post in position order (C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF). If a "utility" type player wins a vote, they will be ineligible for future votes.

So here we go with day 1 – who is the most "some Guy" catcher to have played for the Cubs?

  1. Hector Villanueva, who clearly was not as good as I remember according to baseball reference, ha.

  2. Paul Bako played for 11 different teams, and the Cubs are the only one he spent multiple full seasons with. Perfect example of a Guy.
