Why The New York Jets Offensive Philosophy Looks Promising For The Future!
All right, guys. What’s going on? Welcome in. So, training camp is around the corner. I am extremely extremely excited to really dive into, you know, these updates, who’s training up, what’s going on, all the, you know, different storylines and whatnot that come with training camp, joint practice, preseason, all that good stuff, right? Football, it’s almost back. But in this one, I wanted to focus in on something that I I felt like, you know what, hey, this is worth bringing up. It’s a little bit of a trend basing it off of last season in 2024. And it has to do with the overall vision of this offense, right? What Aaron Glenn, Tanner Ingstrand want this offense to look like in this upcoming season, right? Obviously, first year for everyone here. So, by all indications, whether it’s an Aaron Glenn presser, a Tanner Inkrand presser, a Justin Fields presser, uh I mean, even reporters have talked about this, um this team wants to run the football. It seems like they want to get back to basics and not necessarily, you know, become like the Rex Ryan ground and pound days, but it’s looking like we’re going to be more so a runheavy team, especially throwing in the fact that Justin Fields is one of the best running quarterbacks in football. It just feels it seems like we’re going to be running it more than we throw it. And so with that information, I took a look back at last season. Uh who were the passhappy teams? Who were the teams that were throwing it the most? Right? Top five, top six, and who were the teams that ran the football the most, right? Where did these these two teams stack up as far as offensive ranks, as far as overall record? And I think I I mean I I honestly got to be honest, I was not expecting to see the these two sets of teams because there’s a stark difference between the two groups. So let’s take a look at the passhappy teams first. Who threw the ball the most? So coming in at spot number one, we have the Cleveland Browns. Spot number two, the Cincinnati Bengals, three Dallas Cowboys, four Vegas Raiders, five New York Jets, six Seattle Seahawks, and seven New York Giants. Now, what do all seven of those teams have in common? None are playoff teams. And if you want to take it a step further, there were a lot of teams in that mix that actually were not that good, right? The Jets had a top 10 pick, the Raiders had a top 10 pick, the Browns had a top 10 pick, Giants had a top 10 pick. But the point is here, the top seven teams that were the most passy did not make the playoffs. And then if you take a look at the runheavy teams, who ran the football the most, here’s the top seven. We got the Philadelphia Eagles at one, Ravens at two, Commanders three, Lions four, Packers five, Steelers six, Bills 7, Colts 8. Now, obviously, a couple things to talk about, right? I think if you take a look at those runheavy teams, they do have a lot of things in common, right? I think a lot of these teams have really good defenses, right? The Ravens defense, the Eagles defense, Steelers, Bills, these are all really good defenses. In other words, if your defense is allowing tons of points, tons of first downs, they can’t stop anybody or committing penalties, whatever, they just can’t get off the field. Yeah, chances are the opposing offenses are going to have to throw the football more as opposed to, hey, if your defense is getting a lot of three and outs, if they’re creating turnovers, what have you, you know, opposing offenses are at 13 points, 16 points, 20 points per game, the offense, why would the offense throw it 40 45 times per game, right? Just run the ball. eat the clock and uh you know try to get out try to get out of there with the win. Another point here, the runheavy teams all for the most part have really good running backs, right? Saquon Barkley, Dererick Henry, uh Josh Jacobs had an incredible season, James Cook for the Bills, uh Jonathan Taylor for the Indianapolis Colts, lots of good running back production out of this group. Really, what’s the point? What’s the point of me bringing this up? If the blueprint, if the formula is offensively we’re going to run the football, we want to control the clock. We want to rest our defense, we want to put the offense in third and shorts, second and mediums, right? Giving our quarterback less uh responsibility, right? Putting less on his plate in a good way. Of course, we want to utilize this young offensive line, utilize these three young running backs with a lot of talent, right? All three guys have a little bit of a different skill set, but I feel really confident in all three of their abilities. I, you know, when I watched Isaiah Davis, when I watched Brillan Allen last season, like that to me looked like an NFL player, like an NFL contributing running back. And that is awesome that we have three of them quite frankly. So, if that’s the vision on offense and then we have Aaron Glenn, Steve Wilks running the show on defense with some stars, you know, Quincy Williams, Quinnon Williams, Sgardner. I mean, we don’t even need to go go through the list. We all know these guys. Of course, it’s not perfect. We have a couple holes, little thin at the end, little thin at tackle. What’s going on if we have a linebacker injury? You know, who’s going to be that next man up? question mark right now with strong safety, but I feel pretty confident that, you know, we at least have some young guys in the, you know, in in the mix that could potentially win that job. Uh, and it’s also not to say that we can’t bring in another free agent or pick someone up off of a waiver claim. Maybe someone doesn’t make the team somewhere else um and the Jets bring him in and on paper we’d have a quote unquote upgrade. You know, we see it all the time with these summer acquisitions with teams. So I think again if that is the blueprint that the Jets are trying to follow, if we just look at the other teams that have, you know, a similar track record of, hey, we want to run the football. We have these good running backs. We, you know, in in some cases we have mobile quarterbacks. Think of Jaylen Herz, think of Lamar Jackson, think of Josh Allen. I mean, Justin Fields was on the Steelers last season and all of those teams have pretty good defenses. it seems pretty favorable or a pretty favorable destination to get to. It’s pretty encouraging as a Jet fan to look at the other teams that the Jets are trying to play like and say that’s a playoff team, that’s a playoff team, that’s a playoff. Again, six out of the seven uh or sorry, six out of the top seven teams uh are playoff squads. I I think that bodess well. I I think it’s a good road map to follow here if you’re the New York Jets. So anyway, quick little video here. Just figured I’d bring it up ahead of training camp. Let me know your thoughts down below in the comments section. Thanks so much for watching and as always, go Jets.
Tanner Engstrand and the New York Jets seem to be committed to running the football and having a specific style of approach compared to last year! Let’s take a look at how similar teams fared last year..as always..Go Jets!

LFG!
Jets Central is back at it again and I love it go Jets
Nice
Felt great about LeFleur and he has been great with McVay… under McVay that is. Feel great about Engstrand. Has a plan with the players opposed to the system, plus he was very good at play calling; albeit on a non NFL level, but play calling is rhythmic artistry and he's proven that.
Been watching on and off since the Heidi game. Love your positivity but until regular season all bets are off.
The road map to offensive success this season is every person at a skill position has to all have a CAREER year for the JETS to have any shot at success
What a relief to finally have a competent coaching staff that will excel 😊
Ian as usual, you bring a reasoned perspective to things. People hear run first offense and they think of Rex and ground and pound. Philadelphia won a Superbowl with a team that runs. One of the problems is that in the last decades the NFL turned away from the running game, the analytics wienies decided that the winning formula was putting up 4500 yards passing. Want proof? Wide receivers go for 30m, running backs have a hard time getting over 10, josh Jacobs had a hard time getting picked up as a f/a. Both Barkley and Derrick Henry have shown the power of a good running game, and RBS might be coming back. Jackson was denigrated because he was a running QB, until suddenly they discovered what kind of power that gave the ravens offense.
You don't need to lead the league in throwing to win. The idea that you have to throw all the time to win is as dumb as the Robert Saleh DC view that defense wins championships and the offense doesn't matter ( and you can see what kind of offense Saleh gave us).
And Ian is right, if you have a good to great defense then you have the luxury of running the ball and ball control.
Does this mean Fields can be bad at passing? No, because there will be games where the running game is neutralized and you need a lot of scoring.
Want to know what a great QB is? It is a QB who can do enough to beat another team. If the other team allows running, they go ball control if the defense is also good. If they need a lot of points to overcome the opponent, the QB can throw more..one note, if you play ball control and eat up the clock, the other team has less time of possession.
I think the NFL as a whole is rediscovering the running back and ignoring the anawienies ( sort of like in baseball, some teams are figuring that unlike anawienies with their home run, strike out or walk, that small ball, base stealing and hit and run can win games too).
All I have to say is that Jets had the largest number of throwing attempts and look how we did. Rodgers 'impressive' stats meant nothing.
Offensive Lineman would rather Run Block than Pass Block. I'm hoping this Jets O-Line can be closer to those 2009-2010 Fantastic O-Line the Jets had back then.
Great stuff as always dude! I keep saying it but I’m a biased lion fan so I can’t help it! I do think that with this new regime you will see competency return to the jets. I really do think this game will help a big turn around for you guys!
In order for this plan to work the Jets have to be able to stop the run.
Now all of a sudden you have media personal all predicting success for our Jets. Main reason I have said we don't need a big name wrong at two. We are going to run the shit out of the ball Just get Taylor signed before camp .
The main prerequisite for a good running game is a good defensive line. The number I can’t forget is that Breece Hall was hit behind the line of scrimmage 54% of the time in 2023. Thankfully, the O-Line has finally been fixed. That’s last Super Bowls that KC lost, they had line problems.
The one thing about most of those high rushing total teams is that they have good to great QBs who won't allow teams to crowd the LOS. That is why JF has to establish himself as a threat in the passing game.
Just 3 weeks till we get a small look at this offense against the Packers for maybe one quarter.

I love the direction this team is moving in. This new regime has done well so far imo. I love the emphasis we are putting on runnin the ball. This offense could be fun to watch
But the running backs are no longer valued…. Fans shouldn’t easily “follow the crowd”… The running backs position is very important
