The Royals, at the 2004 trade deadline, heavily pushed for David Wright during talks to send Carlos Beltran to the Mets, with the Mets’ refusal to trade Wright killing the deal.

  1. This is a great example of how catching prospects are always way over ranked.

Wright and Buck were relatively similar rated top 100 prospects. Depends on which list you looked at but both were middle to upper middle top 100 guys.

Baird tried to get the guy who was clearly the better player with a brighter future. But in the end went for similar ranked with more volume.

Teahen ended up a top 100 guy the following year. Mike Wood was a throw in to balance the deal with Dotel moving to improve his immaculate grid quality even more.

Remember this if the Royals are able to flip one of their catching prospects. Pick the one you think is the best, because they are all over ranked and you can get more than they are worth in a trade if you time it right.
