MLB LIVE🔴 Pittsburgh Pirates vs Chicago White Sox – Jul 18, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

So, just about set now. And today’s starter, Mitch Keller. Well, he’s been a real quality starter for his club. And coming into this one, what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year. It seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone. So we’ll see how right-handers do against him in this one. And the batter will be the shorts stop. Chase Maid inside corner for a strike. And that’s how this game gets started. Rightander kicks steals and there’s a rocket into the outfield. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Austin Slater stands in. First pitch, not close. Keller goes 6′ 3 in. 28 years old and he was a second round pick back in 2014. And another ball. Nobody out. Runner at first. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And this one squirts away from the catcher. And now a man into scoring position. Definitely trying to work down and get that double play ball, but it got away enough to erase any chance of that. Good job of moving up in the scoring position. Now a hit could make that wild pitch really sting. Fouled off. He was late. Here comes a 3-2. Stays alive. No outs. Runner on second. Sit him down. Swing at a line drive and that’s a base hit into right field. Here’s the throw to the plate. It’s off the mark and he scores and it’s one- nothing. Puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI. There are a lot of nicknames people have attached to hits like that. Blooper, Flair, Ducks, London, etc. But whatever you want to call it, it’s a knock. And those are the ones that’ll make you smile as a hitter just about every time. And here’s the rookie catcher, Edgar Caro. And that’s off the inside edge. One and0 singy. Maybe some nerves getting the best of him in the first. Well, it’s hard to know exactly if it’s nerves or not, but he just doesn’t have it right now. Those hitters on the other side, they’re going to say it’s nerves and use that as a competitive edge to try to jump on him even more. Lift it in the air out to left and that’ll fall for a base hit. throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. That’s now three hits in a row for the offense. That’s a ball that a lot of times you’ll see the shorts stop or left fielder be able to get to if it hangs up in the air long enough, but right there it just died and found a way to drop in on the green stuff, but base hit. First and second, no outs. Lennin Sosa steps to the plate for the White Socks. Just off the outside edge, ball one. This might be the most pressure you put on this guy today. You got one run in, you got to try to get another one or maybe two and that one missing low. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Popped up foul territory behind the play. And there’s one down. Time to check out the lineup for the White Socks. This is an offense, Chris, that’s having a hard time scoring runs right now. Yeah, sometimes things just aren’t going to click. And unfortunately, what happens is players press, they try to do a little bit more and they get out of their game. You’ve got to let the game come to you. If you chase it, it’s going to run from you. So, this is a team that just needs to calm down, relax, and understand that they’re going to come out of this. [Applause] He had a foul ball. [Applause] Next offering misses and one and one. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. [Applause] That one at 95. Missed up top. Two and one. Slater [Applause] at second. Carol at first. One gone. [Applause] On the ground right side. Four six three double carry and the inning is over. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now one- nothing. It’s Major League Baseball on the show back here at PNC Park. And our pitcher in this game, Aaron Savali. And Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. Well, you know, this guy wants to be better than that. I mean, the RA is bloated. He understands that he’s got to put his team in a better position to win ball games. And at this point, you have to forget about your own individual stats and you have to go out there and attack and try to get that W. And if you do that, you’ll look up and most likely that ERA will have dropped over time. Swing and a miss. Ugly swing right there. Ground ball up the middle in plenty of time to first one gone bottom half of the first. We take a check of the Pirates lineup put together by manager Derek Shelton. And it’s clear the most important job they have today is getting to the starting pitcher early and often. No doubt about that. That’s the best way to disrupt a game. But can they do it? Certainly something for us to pay attention to in this one, partner. And now it’s Andrew McCutchen. Come on. That one’s in there. 0 and one. Little bit low. Next pitch is outside. Back to back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So, I think the confidence level is raised right here. Back up the middle and a base hit. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Hitting is really easy for some guys. One thing that I can see already, his bat stays in the zone on plane for an extended period of time. And guys like that, they have a high contact rate and they have more barrels because of that bat being on plane. And even when you don’t get it great, it’s still hit hard enough to dunk something in like that in front of the center fielder. man at first, one away. And misses inside. One ball, one strike. The 1-1 is fouled off. [Music] the other way and that’s a fair ball. McCutchen round second, heads for third. Lead runner holds at third. So, two runners in scoring position and just one out. Back against the wall with two strikes, but found a way. He got a pitch he could drive, but he didn’t get too excited like a lot of guys do and pull off the baseball. Really good timing all the way through the swing and the barrel was so on plane with the ball. Easy drive into the gap for that double. Nick Gonzalez up to bat next. Lays off for a ball. Two on, one out. That one in the dirt. two and 0. He’s got a base open. So, the pressure to come in and really attack this hitter not as great as it would be if the bags were sacked. And a foul ball makes the count two and one. I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield right through there for a strike. Two two [Applause] [Music] smoked on the ground a second. Throws the first in time now. Two away as they get a run across. [Applause] So the go ahead run in scoring position. Tommy fan the next pirate to hit. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season, so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. Fouled off down the right side. Highfly ball out to left field. Taylor under it. And that is the inning. They get a run on, two hits, no errors, and a man left. We head to the second from PNC Park. All tied 1-1. Back here in Pittsburgh. And now it’s going to be Luis Robert Jun. Robert Jr. Keller back to work. That’s in there. And that’s strike one. 01 1-1 Woody Keller making the calls behind home for us today. And Boo, something to keep an eye on is how pitchers utilize the top part of the strike zone. We see a lot more of that in today’s game with pitchers going up there with hard stuff. Keller definitely an umpire that isn’t afraid to call strikes up in that part of the strike zone. Swing and a highf fly ball that’s out to center. Sinsky calls it in and there’s one away. Chris, do players ever change their approach in meaningful ways based on who’s umpiring or is it good to just be aware of tendencies so you’re not that surprised? I’d say the latter because pitchers got to pitch to his strengths regardless. The hitter’s got to hit to his strength. So, you’re aware of it, but you have to just hunt for what you can handle. Miguel Vargas in the box now. No balls in a strike. Keller, not a big strikeout guy, but still very effective as far as starting pitchers go. One of those guys that involves the defense and really gets him involved in the action. He moves the ball around all the quadrants of the strike zone and will add and subtract velocity and because of that he gets the weak contact. It’s all about missing the barrel of the bat. Yeah. And that skips in the dirt. It seems like this type of guy is kind of a dying breed nowadays. Well, exactly. When teams are looking for high velocity, high strikeout rates, guy like this doesn’t necessarily do that. So, in order to really appreciate how good he is, you have to see him because if you’re just looking at a stat sheet, you might overlook him. started to swing. Held up. Gets a piece and stays alive. And a pop off right side. Foul territory. Horowitz makes the catch. Out number two. Two out. Space is empty. So up next for Chicago, Coulson Montgomery. Slashes this one. And it could be trouble around first. Heading for two. He’s there. It’s a two out double. Went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. Pretty much a model swing on that one as he ripped it into the opposite field gap. And I’m sure he’s going to be watching that one back on video because that’s the kind of swing you want to bottle. So many positives that led to that knock. Michael A. Taylor steps to the plate for the White Socks and that’s in there at the knees for a strike. [Music] Man on second, two down. Pitch misses there and the count even. One and one. One strike. Fast ball for a strike. See if you can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading to count one, two, don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you can get hurt. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Third out. A lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. Bottom of the second. Here’s the center fielder, Jack Sinsky. Jack Sinski. Pitch misses. And that is ball one to the right side. Sosa tosses to first. That’s one out in the bottom of the second. Batting seventh third base now batting Kee Brian Hayes singing he’s never finished the season with more stolen bases in his entire career. [Applause] That one at the knees for a strike. Man, I mean nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. Strike two. One out. Base is empty. Next pitch misses now. One and two. One ball, two strikes. And that’s downstairs and outside. Swing and a miss. And he’s down on strikes. That’s the second out. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time a little anxious. And now Henry Davis check swing and he went strike one. Two down. Nobody on. Ripped to third but handled. And that’ll end the inning. And one, two, three go the Pirates. Score remains deadlocked at one. And we’re back. New inning getting started. Stepping in, the White Sox lead off, man. Chase Maid. He swings and misses at the first pitch. 0 and one. One strike. Swing at a ball lifted to center field. Sinski. And there’s one down. Now batting right fielder Austin. Austin Slater steps to the plate for the White Socks. Singled and drove in a run his first time through. And that is in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Swinging a foul out of play. Got him. Blew the express right by his bat for strike three. Now it’s the White Sox catcher Edgar Caro. One for one with a single so far. [Applause] Fast ball for a strike at 95. Two out. Space is empty. [Music] Next offering is fouled back towards first. Horowitz. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Three up, three down for him. There we move on to the bottom of inning number three. All tied 1-1. And welcome back to the ballpark. Here’s the veteran shortstop Isaiah Kerfa. Slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats. Now the one hit on the ground softly to short. MRO on the run. Throw to first on the money. Nice play. Now batting first baseman Spencer. Back to the top of the lineup. Up next for the Pirates, Spencer Horowitz grounded out his first time. swing and that ball smashed on the line and foul ball. Well, he missed a hitable off speed pitch right there. Not sure exactly what the timing. Sometimes you get a backup breaking ball. You’re expecting it to make its move at the end. It never does and you’re tied up. Reaches over the wall and he’s got it for McCachen. Here’s McCutchen. Singled and scored his first time. And that’s in the dirt. Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. [Music] outside low and it’s two and one. Next offering is fouled back. Struck him out looking. Nothing doing here for Pittsburgh. Score remains tied 1-1. Back here at PNC Park onto the fourth, here’s the second base, Lenny Sosa. Sosa measures 6 feet even, 210 lbs, and he was born in Venezuela. And there’s a rocket into the outfield. Now he turns and heads for second. The throw in. Not in time. That’s a leadoff double. Everything came together perfectly for him right there. He really shot that one down the right field line and somehow found a way to keep it from slicing. Foul. One thing that was great about the approach, his head was down all the way through the pitch. And that’s how you do it. Benitandy up here. He hit into a double play his first time up and a foul ball. [Music] Man at second and that’s in there for a strike. And quickly nothing at two. Look out. And it hit him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. Go ahead. Run on base. And now it’s Luis Robert. Fly to center. His first time. He’s 0 for one. [Applause] Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. No ball. One strike. [Music] [Applause] Deal one and ball one. Way to lay off that pitch down. There’s the strike. First and second, no outs. Top half of inning number four. Swinging a ground ball and it’s just fouled. That was close. The delivery to Robert. Swing and a ball driven pretty well out towards left center. He’s got it. Runner tags at second. He makes it to third. Good base running to move up with only one out. Now we’ll see if moving up to third there pays off for him. He didn’t have to tag and go, but now he can score a lot of different ways. Doesn’t have to be a base hit. We’ll see what happens. [Applause] Vargas stands in now. Looks at that one inside. In this situation, the batter’s got to know what the pitcher is trying to do to him and that’s trying to get him to hit the ball on the ground. Get two for one. You got to look for something up in the zone and worst case scenario, you deliver the sacrifice fly. Next pitch inside now two and0. This is a situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended. What you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up that’s in on your hands. That’ll pop you up in the infield and that’s exactly what the pitcher wants. [Applause] That one is absolutely belted. That’s back and he brings it in on the warning track and that should get the job done as he tags from third. He’ll score on the sack fly. They take the lead. It’s 2-1. Montgomery. And up next for Chicago, Coulson Montgomery doubled his first time. [Music] [Applause] And that’s in for a strike. Going one. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] in there for a strike at the top of the zone. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. Cold strike three on the fast and that ran back over the inner half. A run, a hit, and a man left. On now to the bottom of the fourth. It’s the White Socks two and the Pirates one. Back here in Pittsburgh, ready to go. Bottom four. Brian Reynolds here. Ryan Reynolds. That’s in for a strike. You know, these Pirates just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. So many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches. They’re chasing outside of the strike zone. You can’t do much of anything with those locations. And that’s been true again today. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. Nick Gonzalez the next pirate to hit. ball there. And as a pitcher, when the hitters are swinging at everything, you feel no need to challenge inside the zone. You just keep working the corners and expanding that strike zone and beyond. And they just keep eating right out of your hand. That missed by a lot. And the count now two of nothing. [Music] [Applause] That one drifts inside. He hasn’t fallen behind in the count like this all day. He’s in danger of walking his first batter right here. Reynolds on at first. Nobody out. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. Generally second, third time through the lineup. You want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Looks like he’s doing a nice job of it. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] swing and a miss. That’s a strike out. Nice job behind the plate there. And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base. And the defense breathes a sigh of relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. Keep him off balance, get him out of there, and deal with the next guy. Here’s Tommy Fam. Check on the runner Reynolds. dives back in safely. [Applause] Runner takes off. Pitch misses. Throw to second. Save. And the tying run is now in scoring position. [Applause] just missed. Well, this is a little tough for the hitter in the back of the mind. You’re wondering with first base open, am I going to get a pitch to hit? Got to stay back. Let your hands work. Stay in the middle of the field. [Applause] And that one fouled off. [Applause] Next offering is downstairs. Jack Sinski in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here on the ground to third. throws across the diamond and that’s an out. Well, there’s a lot writing on that at bat right there. Nice job of the pitcher to bear down, make the pitch, get the ground ball. Excellent piece of work. Jack Sinski, the next Pirate to hit, rolled out to second in his first at bat. [Applause] Late swing, fouled to the left. Runner at second. Two down. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. [Applause] Ripped to short, zips it to first out. And that is that. So they can’t do anything with the leadoff single there. We’re headed to the fifth. It’s the White Socks two and the Pirates won. And we’re back. Ready now for the fifth inning. Now the left fielder, Michael A. Taylor Keller back to work and that’s in for a strike. And that’s fouled off. He’s notched four strikeouts now. Now that back to the top of the White Sox lineup. And now here is Chase Maidra. One for two. And first offering is fouled off. Well on the mound very efficient, able to produce an outcome it seems like within the third or fourth pitch of just about every at bat. And that is out of play. That one way inside. Straighten him up a little bit. Line to right and that’ll be a base hit. So, a man aboard now with one away. Now batting right fielder Austin Slater. Austin Slater steps to the plate for the White Socks. That one finds the zone and that is strike one. Pirates inside. Just missed. And there at the knees. One and two. Good approach right there. You want to get something just a little higher that you can elevate. Stay out of that double play. [Music] Popped up. Gonzalez on his way over. He’s got it. And there are two down. [Applause] Now batting number seven. And next to him for the Socks, Edgar Carol. That’s in there. Strike one. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Carmen Majinski getting ready to go. Haney, a left-hander, also throwing. Maid off of first with two away. Keller checks the runner and he’s back in safely. Two outs. That’s outside. One ball, one strike. That clips the inside corner for a strike. [Applause] That one hit to right. Reynolds trying to get there. Brings it in. And that is that. So, one left for the White Socks as they’re unable to add to their 2-1 lead. We head to the bottom of the fifth at the plate for Pittsburgh. Kean Hayes. Kebrian Hayes. That one finds a corner. That’s strike one. That one missed. [Applause] Ground ball to the right side. He’ll do it himself. And the lead offense set down in their half of the fifth. That’s what a good sinker is designed to do. Get a guy to roll over a little bit, hit the ball on the ground, kill some worms while you’re at it. Here’s the catcher to hit. Henry Davis [Applause] pitch misses inside. Ball one. One ball. Home team down a run. Last half of inning number five. Up the middle. Sosa slings to first and a couple of quick outs. Oh, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Isaiah Connor Falefa up to the plate. Grounded out his first time up. That’s a strike. This guy’s not wasting any pitches. Hitters got to get into swing mode. This is a good time to expand the zone. Throw something maybe down in the dirt. Foul ball still 0 and two. A short stop takes a ball. Swinging a ground ball up the middle. Fires to first on the run. What a play. Inning over. Nothing doing for the offense that time. Five innings complete. It’s the White Socks two and the Pirates won. And welcome back to the ballpark. Now it’s the second baseman, Lennin Sosa. And that one misses up and in. And that’s ball one. Activity in Pittsburgh’s bullpen. Number 47 loosening up in case he’s called upon by Derek Shelton. Bednar a hard throwing right-hander up as well. That one finds the zone and it’s one and one. swings through that one out in front that time. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. In the dirt. Catcher has it. Fires the first. Got him. One away on the strikeout. Now that Beni to the plate, he’s for one. Oh, that plunked him. And that’s now twice he’s been hitting this one. And the Pirates manager making his way to the mound now as he will make the move. Mitch Keller departs and he kept him in it even though he’s in line for the loss right now. New arm when we come back. Now pitching. They hand the ball over to a new arm, Carmen Majinski. And as relievers go, he’s not a big strikeout guy. Tries to force weak contact. So command and execution are huge for him. Luis Robert now for two in this one. There’s a strike. One- run game. One out, one on. And that’s a base hit. Throws to second. He’s in there. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. And you know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field, and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did, and he did it perfectly. So, up next for Chicago, Miguel Vargas. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Two on, one out and fouled off. There’s a 1-1. That’s a ball. And that clips the inside corner. Benendi on second. Robert over at first. So one away. That one way outside and now it’s three and two. Coulson Montgomery up next for the White Socks. [Applause] Struck him out looking. Fast ball the letters frozen for strike three. Frustrating end to the bat for the hitter and I’m sure that’s going to sit on him for a little while. You want to be ready to hit the fast ball. Sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case right there. [Applause] Here’s the third baseman Coulson Montgomery fouled off. He was late. Two outs. Couple of base runners at first and second. Swinging a foul out of play. [Applause] Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. That one almost got him. Two on, two outs. [Applause] Next offering upstairs. Hit hard on the ground is short. They get the force. That’s out number three. So a job well done from the Buckos bullpen. Top of the order. Do up in the home half of the six. It’s the White Socks two and the Pirates one. Back here at PNC Park. John Shabi with Chris Singleton in the booth. And leading off the bottom of the sixth, Spencer. [Music] slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats. [Music] And now it’s even up. Well played umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. Ground ball right side. Takes it himself. Leadoff man retired in the six. Now batting designated hitter Andrew McCachen. Here’s Andrew McCutchen to hit. Singled back in the first and scored their only run. He’s one for two. outside low. One and0 right through there for a strike. The guy’s going this good. He’s retired seven in a row. You got to step out of the box. Fake bunt. Do something to break it up. And that skips into dirt. [Applause] [Music] Swing and a miss. Chased it out of the zone. Well, those hitters count sometimes can be a little too aggressive and a good pitcher will play off of that. He’s got to get a better pitch to hit. That’s a little bit low. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. [Applause] [Music] Ripped to third and caught. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. I know it didn’t produce a hit, but he made solid contact and that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. So, next to the plate for Pittsburgh, Ryan Reynolds. Fast ball for a strike. 0 and one. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom of the sixth. [Applause] Out to short, slings it across and they take care of Reynolds for the out and the Pirates go one, two, three. Bucks go down quietly and our score remains 2-1. Now on the bump, number 47. Well, good luck against this guy. He’s been extremely tough to hit this year. His numbers are excellent. Now, Michael A. Taylor, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts, and the first offering a fast ball for a strike. Looks like he’s sacrificed to pitch right down the middle for tracking and timing. Some good hitters will do that. out to short into the outfield base hit. Had a good start to the inning. Now batting short stop my draw. So up next, Chase MRO. That one fouled off. You know, these White Socks putting together some really good at bats in this game. There’s been a lot to like with how they’re approaching their chances at the plate. The numbers help tell the story. I mean, they’ve been sitting fast ball and it’s paying off in a big way so far with six hits against that pitch alone. Come on, Pirates. That’s off the inside corner. And the count is one and one. And that’s a great way for a lineup to dominate a game because if a pitcher can’t rely on his fast ball to get outs, I mean, that puts a lot of pressure on the rest of his pitches to be effective. Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. The shorts stop takes the ball. Taylor gets his lead at first with nobody out. can’t connect on the curve. Ball struck him out. Well, often times that’s the pitch he’s trying to set up, the curve ball. He’ll lean on it pretty heavily. So, you got to be expecting it, look for it, and sell out so you don’t miss it when you get it. Austin Slater steps to the plate for the White Socks. And a base hit into right center field into third now. So runners at the corners and one out. Now batting number seven. Two on, one out. Now it’s the White Sox catcher Edgar Caro. One for three. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. [Applause] That pitch in for a strike and it’s a one. Really good job in this spot to get ahead in the count. He’s going to have to continue finish off this hitter. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. Big pitch right here. He’s going to try to make a pitch that’s going to produce a strike out or a ground ball double play. Two on, one out. That one got close and count one and two. Swinging a drive deep right field. Reynolds on the move heading back. Drops into the glove. Runner tags from third. A big run scores on the sack fly and they lead by two. Wow. Pretty amazing that only ended up being a sack fly. So much excitement and a great effort out there to take on the wall as he hauled it in. And for the batter could have easily been a double or even a triple. But you know what? He’ll take the sackfly RBI. And here is Sosa to the plate. Slider misses outside. [Applause] Two outs. One. outside. One run across in the frame so far here in the top half of inning number seven. [Applause] And a ground ball to first. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. So they pick up a run on two hits. No errors and a man left. Seventh inning stretch time. It’s the White Socks three and the Pirates won. Bottom of the seventh at the plate for Pittsburgh. Nick Gonzalez. Let’s go Pirates down the line and that will drop foul. You know, these Pirates, simply put, are producing a lot of quality swings. We’ve already seen eight line drives from them, and it’s always a good sign when the ball is jumping off your bat, and that’s what this offense has been doing so far today. Now, that’s a tough play for the infielder, ranging back into the outfield. There’s part of them that’s saying, “Hey, where are you at outfielder? Call me off.” But he stayed focused and made a nice catch right there. And the batter now, Tommy Fan. drifted in the air left field and a touchdown for a base hit and that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. Now batting center fielder Jack Jack Sinski the next pirate to hit. He’s grounded out a couple of times and that one fouled off. with the tying run at the plate here. The bottom of the seventh. [Applause] Swung on. Belted. That’s back. And that one is gone. That’s worth the price of admission. His second home run of the series. And they tie it up. It’s 33. That’s a great way to fire up this crowd. They’re feeling it now. [Applause] That’s an impressive swing of the bat to go over the wall to the opposite field gap. And you know, there are a lot of guys that just don’t have the pop to do that and probably just as many who don’t have the approach either. He let that ball travel and he got great extension on the follow through to drive it out of here. Now the White Sox manager is out of the dugout and will make a move to the pen. Aaron Savali won’t go any further tonight and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. New pitcher coming on, the veteran Dan Alavilla. Should be a good first match up for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up. So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. Key Brian Hayes the next to hit. First pitch and he just misses. Alt Villa 32 years old. He joined the team as a free agent. And a strike [Applause] and that one fouled off. Still only one out here in the inning. This ball’s chopped on the ground. Tosses to first. Two gone. Now batting catcher. Here’s the Pirates catcher now. Henry Davis. And there’s a strike. Good heater at 98. Action in the pen down there. Tyler Alexander the lefty looks to be getting himself ready. Eiser getting cranked up as well. That one ripped left field. Headed one. pops the wall, makes the turn, and heads for second, and that holds the go ahead run at second base. Oh, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. Recognized the break on that pitch early, and that allowed him to keep his front shoulder in. You know, it’s easy to bail on those front door breaking balls, but a great job right there of letting it travel, then unloading a nice balance swing. Now, that sets up a huge bat in this ball game. So, the go-ahead run is into scoring position. Here is Isaiah Kaider, Falefa. Late swing fouled off. Two down. Go ahead run at scoring position. [Applause] And he takes a strike. [Music] Swings and misses. Struck him out. Cannonball coming. We’re tied now at three a piece. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Caleb Ferguson bringing in the lefty with the left-handed hitter coming up to hit. Classic bullpen move right here. So, we’ll see how it works out. Ferguson. Now, it’s Andrew Benendi to hit. Leading off for the White Socks, the designated hitter, Andrew Benendi. [Applause] There’s a strike. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Dennis Santana up and throwing. Haney also getting ready. [Applause] Well, he got challenged with a good fast right there. Just couldn’t catch up. [Applause] And that’s in the dirt. They tried to get him to go chase the pitch down and away, but he wouldn’t bite. [Applause] Just misses with that one. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. [Applause] Well struck deep right field. Went back and out of here. A solo shot. It’s 43. This crowd is just devastated here in Pittsburgh. [Applause] What I love about this swing is he stayed tall, allowed his hands to go directly to the baseball, letting that bat head get down through the ball to create backspin and hit it out of the ballpark. Really nice job. So here’s Robert now. [Applause] Fast ball in for a strike. 0 and one. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. And we’re in the top of the eighth. In the air, left side. Van settles under this one. Puts it away for the just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. [Applause] Vargas stands in now and watches strike one. [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] ball. One ball, two strikes. [Applause] Line drive and a base hit right there. Really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. Just a really nice approach to shoot that line drive to the opposite field. There’s a lot of hard work and discipline that goes into getting a result like that at the plate. Doesn’t come naturally for most hitters. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Montgomery in the box with one away as he takes ball one [Applause] that catches the corner. Vargas the base runner at first with one out. [Applause] The 1-1 is fouled off. [Applause] Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. A little bit high and the count’s even at two. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Still two and two after the foul ball. Hanging in there pretty good against the lefty. [Applause] At this point in the game, you cannot issue free passes. He’s going to have to challenge this hitter. Hitter’s got to be ready to swing it. Ninth pitch of the bat. do next. In the air, left field down the line. Fan snags it for the second half. [Applause] Here’s the left fielder, Michael A. Taylor. This is a guy who’s in the line of first and foremost because of what he contributes defensively, Chris. And when you talk about preventing runs from being scored, this guy is a big contributor. I was always told it’s hard to take you off the field when you play really good defense, especially at a premier position. And that’s what he does. Line and a base hit into right. Ruer puts on the brakes at second. So it’s first and second with two outs. Everything came together for him. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. So digging in Chase Maid right through there for a strike. First and second, two down. [Applause] Popped up right side. Horitz settles underneath it, makes the grab, and that’s the third out. But the White Socks get one on a homer. It’s now a 43 ball game. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Brandon Eer. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different, so we’ll see what he’s got here. [Applause] Corwitz the next to hit takes low for a ball. Movement for the White Socks in their bullpen. Grant Taylor, the closer of the staff, is throwing. [Music] [Applause] That’s inside right now. Behind in the count, two balls and no strikes. No free passes. You can’t allow that. line drive hops over the wall and that’s an automatic double. Well, that’s how you respond. Clean off man comes up, gets into scoring position. Now, there are several ways that they can get this run across. [Applause] Andrew McCutchen, the next Pirate to hit [Applause] on the outside corner. One. [Music] [Applause] So the tying run at second in the air fairly deep to right field. Squeezes it. Runner tags at second. Now a relay to third. He’s safe at third. And the tying run is 90 ft away. Right. And now a high leverage at bat for Brian Reynolds. [Applause] Don’t be surprised to ball on the ground to the corners if they come home with the baseball instead of going to first base. [Applause] There’s the strike. The tying run is 90 ft away. Ripped to first, caught that takes away the opportunity to score the runner from third with a sack fly. We’re talking about a different story if that line drive hits the ground, but he made a good play and they can get out of this thing with one more out. Nick Gonzalez getting ready to hit and there’s no doubt that they’ll feed off the energy from this crowd, right? I mean, yeah, I’d say the intensity level has gone up a few notches for sure. [Applause] That one the other way. Fair ball. Runner from third comes across. Tie game here in the eighth. The throw to second is offline. Such great concentration. Everybody on their feet knowing that you can come through with a good swing. And there he doesn’t try to do too much. [Applause] So runner at second, two down. Tommy Fan now at the plate. That one finds the zone. Strike one. [Applause] And misses inside. [Applause] Fast ball for a strike. Got him. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. But the Pirates strike on this runscoring double. All even now at four a piece. Major League Baseball is on the show. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Dennis Sant. And if you dig into his walk rate, his numbers are really impressive. He’s really filled up the strike zone this season. So these batters better be ready to swing the bats. Now here is Austin Slater. Right fielder Austin Slater. [Applause] And there’s the strike and ball one. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. Here’s a rocket to right field. He’s got it. There’s one away. Good piece of hitting right there. Nice hard line drive to the outfield. You’re trying to get on base, represent that go ahead run. Can’t hang your head on that at all. At the plate, Edgar Carol [Applause] on the corner for a strike. All tied up here. The top of the ninth. swing and a miss. Well, so many hard throwing relievers in the game these days. You would think that hitters have made the adjustment, but I don’t know if you ever get used to it. Just pumping gas out of the bullpen. So hard to play catchup. Throw off line. He’s safe. And a nice job there to keep it from getting away. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Lenny Sosa. One for four with a double. And that’s ripped for a base hit. Quick throw back in. Lead runner holds it second with one gone. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. I could watch base hits like that one all day long and so could every hitting coach in the league. Just a nice line drive into center field. Down the go ahead runs in scoring position. So big opportunity for them to jump ahead late. Up next for Andrew Benendi steps up. He’s coming off a big swing of the bat in the eighth inning. Chris. Yeah, he may still be riding a little high and for him hopefully the confidence is still there. It was a solo shot and a very important run in this game. [Applause] Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. Heading for the plate. Here’s the throw. He scores and they have the lead. It’s 54. Just a huge bat right there. Really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. He didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. And now here’s the big center fielder Luis Robert on the ground. Could be two offbalance feed. There’s one to first. Not in time. Great effort there. Now the first base, Miguel Vargas. And now the first baseman, Miguel Vargas. We just might be talking about this at bat in our postgame wrap. He’s proven he can drive in runs in these spots. That one’s in there. Strike one. Bullpen action for the Pirates. Andrew Heene, the left-handed reliever, appears to be getting loose. Bednar getting loose as well. One-run game here in the top of the ninth. Late swing fouled off. [Applause] gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. Two on, two outs. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two [Applause] [Music] and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. [Applause] Chopped to third. Pays. They take the force out. And that is that. So, one run in the inning on this base hit. It’s now a 54 ball game. Back after this on the show. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Grant Taylor. Well, he’s the guy they hope to turn to out of the pin to lock down wins. So, this game has gone to plan, more or less. Let’s see if he can wrap it up here. And now the center fielder Jack Sinski. He’s already homered in this game. Sinski. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Strike one. Call a come and get me fast ball right there. He didn’t look ready for the velocity. I think it’d be a mistake to throw him anything off speed right here. [Applause] Yeah, that’s fouled off. [Music] And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. [Applause] Swings and misses. Struck him out. Gasted right by him. Well, the first batter, it’s always a big one for the closer. I mean, you get that punch out, you get settled in, you feel like you’re in command out there on the mound from the jump and kind of prevents any doubt from creeping into your mind or the fielders that are playing behind you that, you know, you’re going to wrap this thing up. Pays the next to hit takes ball one trying to close out a one-run lead there. The home team trying to pull it out. That one ran inside. Almost got him. [Applause] looking to get the tying run on base and the two-1 hammered but foul. Fights it off. He’ll see another swing and a miss. struck him out and the Pirates with only one out left. No, it’s kind of tough right here. Closer comes in and he strikes out the first two hitters. It’s hard not to feel defeated and that this is going to go quickly, but you got to go up there maybe trying to find a way to choke up on the bat, spread out, put the ball in play, and maybe you can extend this inning. And here is Henry Davis. And there’s a strike on the outside corner. No ball. One strike. inside and it’s one and one. [Music] One strike away. Hit to right and that ought to do it. And he’s got it. Ball game. And the White Socks hold on to win a tight one as this one ends as a one-run ball game. Well, you take a tie ball game into the ninth on the road. You know that you’ve got some work to do. You got to score, but then you’ve also got to get three outs in the bottom half of that inning. They did just that today. Very well played ball game. Get this win on the road. Everybody’s happy with the W. Heat. Heat.
