Denver Broncos AVOID Contract Issues with Jahdae Barron, RJ Harvey
The Denver Broncos officially have their entire 2025 rookie class under contract. Jade Baron and RJ Harvey, they’ve got their deals in the books in the Broncos. They also have the best offensive line in the NFL. We’re going to tell you all about it on today’s episode, Locked on Broncos. You are Locked on Broncos, your daily Denver Broncos podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network. Your team every day. The Denver Broncos officially have their entire 2025 NFL draft class signed and ready to go for 2025 training camp. Jade Bear, the team’s first round pick, and RJ Harvey, the team’s second round pick. They’ve got deals in place, four-year contracts for both players. Of course, our good friend Mike Cliff over there at 9 News, he broke the news initially that the Broncos agreed to terms with running back RJ Harvey on a 4-year contract. And just one day before that, his teammate Jade Baron agreed to his four-year contract. And we’ve got plenty to talk about with those two deals, as well as the Denver Broncos having the best offensive line in the NFL. doesn’t get talked about enough. We’re continuing our training camp previews by talking about the big guys up front on the offensive line in Broncos country. My salute to every single one of you that makes Lockown Broncos your first listen of the day every single day. If you’re new to the show, my name is Ser Bettinger. I am the co-host here at Lockdown Broncos as well as the site expert at Predominantly Orange. And if you haven’t already done so, go ahead, hit subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts as well as on YouTube so you don’t miss a single bit of Denver Broncos news content coverage and more. Let’s talk about the big news of the day, the rookies getting their deals signed. Of course, Jade Baron was the first out of the two. The last rookie for the Broncos to sign was RJ Harvey. And there’s some backstory to that, or at least there’s some explanation for that. But Jade Baron is an interesting case because previously he was one of just two first round picks. The other being Shamar Stewart of the Cincinnati Bengals to not have his deal signed. And of course we we’re all seeing how contentious that situation is with Shamar Stewart and the Cincinnati Bengals to the point that he’s like practicing at Texas A&M’s campus. Obviously, he can’t play there this year, but he could sit out this season and and re-enter the 2026 NFL draft. Things did not get to that point with Jade Baron in the Denver Broncos, which is good news. There was really never any reason to worry. Of course, every single year there’s going to be different negotiations that go on behind the scenes, even though these rookie contracts are predetermined by the NFL collective bargaining agreement with the NFLPA. That’s the reason why they do all this stuff. But the the salary cap going up means that a percentage of the salary cap in terms of or at least a percentage of the overall pie for what these rookies are getting with their signing bonus, their, you know, firstear cash, all those sorts of things matter. And when you look at the last couple of years, the the past two 20th overall picks before Jade Baron, you had Jackson Smith and Jigba, the wide receiver for the Seahawks back in 2023, and then Troy Fanu, the offensive lineman for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Those guys both received in the realm of 7.3 7.5 million in terms of their signing bonus, a money guaranteed to them in year one. That was part of their year 1 cash flow. Well, now that the salary cap has continued to increase and other factors are part of it, Jade Baron ended up getting nearly 9.8 million in terms of that signing bonus according to Mike Cliss. And that’s significant because that’s a $2 million boost from what we had previously seen in years past. That’s over half the contract or it’s, you know, an $18 million deal where you’re getting $9.8 million upfront in terms of a signing bonus. That’s a lot of guaranteed money. And we’re seeing already these first round picks and some high second round picks getting a lot more guaranteed money than than usual. Which is exactly why the majority of second round picks around the NFL had not signed leading up to I guess mid July here where players are finally now getting into the fold, getting under contract. But it took a long time because the Houston Texans gave Jaden Higgins, the 34th overall pick in the draft, a fully guaranteed contract. And that’s unprecedented for second round picks. So, of course, then you have agents and player agents, you know, that they’re talking to teams and they’re thinking, well, if that guy’s getting a fully guaranteed deal, my guy should get a fully guaranteed deal, right? And so you have this log jam at the top of round two, which led to 30 out of the 32 picks being unsigned going into the week where teams are having rookies report. And of course, deadlines, they spark action, don’t they? And that’s where the action started. The 49ers kind of broke the dam. Their second round pick, Alfred Collins, he signed. He was the 45th pick overall in this or 43rd, one of those mid-4s. He’s in the mid-40s. He’s getting uh 87% more than 87% of his contract fully guaranteed, which is massive compared to what we saw last year at that spot, which was not even close to that. So RJ Harvey, we don’t know the official details just yet, although his four-year deal is just like every other one. It’s a prefixed deal. Four years, 7.35 million. And uh we’ll see what the signing bonus is on that. We’ll see what ends up happening in terms of that guaranteed money or the portion of that contract that is fully guaranteed. But that’s neither here nor there in terms of the Broncos just wanting to get this guy in the fold and on the field because we know that RJ Harvey is going to be a significant piece on that Denver Broncos offense this year. Just at mandatory mini camp, you know, Shawn Peyton was asked about him catching passes at practice and he said, “Well, we haven’t given him his Joker wings just yet.” Um, but that does imply that the Joker wings are eventually coming. And I know Broncos country kind of cringes when you hear that term Joker, but the reality is is that this team believes that RJ Harvey can be that type of difference maker in the passing game, which is absolutely huge for this team going forward. So RJ Harvey, Jade Baron, they are officially under contract and in the fold for the Denver Broncos who rookies already reported on July 16th for training camp, but they’re not allowed per the CBA to get on the field for activities if they have not yet signed their contracts. And that’s not the case for voluntary mini camp or even mandatory mini camp. But when it comes to training camp, they can’t participate in that stuff. So, it’s not even necessarily that these draft picks would be holding out. They just legitimately can’t be out there if they haven’t signed a deal. And you understand there’s kind of a process to all that, especially when you’re in uncharted waters as NFL teams are these days. So, everybody’s been in the same boat, but the Denver Broncos, they’ve got their guys on board, which is exciting, Broncos country. And now when veterans report for camp on July 22nd, the entire team is expected to be out there and we’ll see if anything happens with all their veterans that are still amidst maybe some contract issues with the team. But it’s expected that everybody is going to be in attendance in terms of the guys that are healthy. And even in terms of health and injuries, there’s not many players that are dealing with those right now. So the Broncos should have really good attendance to open up training camp this year. And that’s I mean that’s huge for this team that just won 10 games last year and has aspirations of possibly contending for the AFC West in 2025. Let’s rev those engines up, Broncos country, because man, this is one of the best rosters the team has had a very loaded roster on both sides of the ball. This team has depth. They’ve got topend talent once again. They’ve been hitting on draft picks. It’s a very exciting time for everyone in Broncos country. But you know what? It wouldn’t be as exciting of a time if the Denver Broncos didn’t have one of the best offensive lines in the NFL. The Broncos and and fans can all sleep easy every single night knowing that this team has one of, if not the best offensive line in the NFL this year. And you know what’s a huge part of that is continuity. Not many teams get the privilege of continuity year after year, at least not with good players, right? And so the Denver Broncos, they have that and that’s exactly what we’re going to be talking about coming up next on today’s episode of Lockdown Broncos. The Denver Broncos have one enviable thing on their offensive line, and that is continuity. They’re bringing back the entire starting five for the 2025 season. I’m going to tell you why that means they have the best offensive line in the NFL going forward. and Broncos country. Mile high salute once again to every single one of you for tuning in every single day here, Lockdown Broncos. We appreciate you so much, especially those of you who are everyday listeners of the show. Thanks for rocking with us every day here, Lockdown Broncos. And let’s talk about continuity on the offensive line because when you look at the Denver offensive line, this was a major problem area when Shawn Payeyton got into the building, wasn’t it? This was one of those areas of the team where you couldn’t help but wonder how much longer is Garrett BS really going to be around. What is, you know, Lloyd Kusheenberry, is he a a bust as a third round pick? Should should we have expected him to be as much as we did when he was a third round pick, right? Quinn Miners, what’s he going to develop into? Is he going to be a long-term fixture? The Broncos did not have any answer at right tackle. They did not have any answer at left guard. There was so much going on when Shawn Payeyton got to the team in 2023 and he understands as well as anybody. If you can win in the trenches on either side of the ball in the NFL, you raised the proverbial floor of your team substantially. And the Broncos did that, didn’t they? I mean, after being one of the worst teams in the NFL in 2022 with arguably some of the worst trench play in the league in 2022, they upgraded both the offensive and the defensive lines in 2023 and they end up winning eight games. They continue to improve those units in 2024 and they win 10 games. So, you see what’s going on here in Denver is that they’ve raised the floor of the entire team by being elite in the trenches on both sides of the ball. It just gives you such a margin for error that you can stay in any game if your quarterback is not getting sacked a ton. And yes, we know that the quarterback is responsible a lot of times for getting sacked, but you’re also responsible for creating run lanes. You’re responsible for keeping star pass rushers at bay. I mean, there’s so much that the offensive line is responsible for and continuity on the offensive line. That was like jumbo shrimp for the Denver Broncos. There wasn’t there was no such thing, right? It’s like an oxymoron, a continuity on the O line. Nobody had even seen anything like that. At least no continuity that anybody wanted any part of. And so when Shawn Payeyton got to the team, he signs Mike McGllinchi as one of his big ticket free agent pickups. And that signing was highly contested at the time. Broncos country, you all remember it. Well, Ben Powers comes over from the Baltimore Ravens. All of a sudden, you’ve got two starters through free agency in a year in which you didn’t have a first round pick or even a second round pick until you traded up to get Marvin Mims. You bring these two guys in, it’s helped establish a culture on the offensive line and it’s given you that continuity that teams would I mean teams would do a lot of stuff to have the type of level of play the Broncos have on the O line as well as that continuity. You talk about a team that’s been in the top five of run block win rate and pass block win rate over the last two years according to ESPN. That is absolutely massive. And we just saw on the lockdown NFL top 100 players. Quinn Miners was representing the unit as the 70th overall player and one of the top five guards in football. Actually Quinn was a first team allpro last year. So he might have he probably should have been even a little bit higher on that list. But regardless, what you’ve done is you’ve brought in the right people to develop offensive line. You’ve emphasized it properly in terms of getting guys in the starting lineup. And you’ve also shown like that player development is not just for high draft picks or highly paid players, right? Because you moved on from Lloyd Kushenberry. He gets a big money deal from the Tennessee Titans and you slot Luke Watenberg into the mix. And remember, other than Javvante Williams, Luke Watenberg at the time was the only other guy that George Payton had ever traded up to get in the NFL draft. And it was a rough go for him when he got on the field in 2022, wasn’t it? I mean, he got a crash course in the NFL by having to go right up against Chris Jones for some of his first reps. Watenberg has grown a ton as a player. I think if we’re being critical, we could say, “Hey, some of those snaps floated a little too slowly back to Boone Knicks last year.” But Watenberg has been a good player for the Denver Broncos. He’s developed nicely. He’s now in a contract year, but to bring back a starting five on the offensive line in the NFL is I mean, it’s enviable. I don’t have the numbers off hand of what other teams were able to do that this off seasonason, but you can bet that it’s very few. And yeah, sure, some teams may have made upgrades over previous starters in around the league, and that’s great. But to have that continuity is one of the biggest secret weapons for this Denver Broncos team going into the 2025 season. This offensive line has chemistry. Four of the five guys, as a matter of fact, they’ve been starting together now going on three years. Like I said, Luke Watenberg took over for Lloyd Kushenberry, so this is his second year as a full-time starter. But the other four guys on the line, they’ve all been together now for the last three seasons, or at least this will be their third season together, and that’s really exciting, man. It’s It’s great to see these guys developing together. They know the offense like the back of their hand. They’ve they’ve had continuity on the coaching staff. Just just think about Garrett BS for a second here and how many different coaches and different schemes he was playing in from the start of his NFL career to the point that Shawn Payeyton took over, right? I mean, it’s kind of crazy when you look back on it just how much turnover there was year after year after year for not just him, but for any of the main stays on this Denver Broncos team. So, continuity on the offensive line, I think, is going to put this team as the best O line in the NFL. I’m just going to say it. I mean, I think a lot of folks out there, some analytics people, people who are doing offseason rankings, they’re going back and they’re kind of looking at things from last year. They’re already putting the Broncos on top of these lists and they’re putting them at least in the top two or three, if not number one overall. I would bet that if you would go to any of these experts out there that’s saying, “Hey, we’re, you know, our our expertise is evaluating offensive line, you know, we’re watching every single rep, every single snap, and we’re doing what we can to eval at at least good or bad, right?” I would guess that anybody that says the Broncos have a good offensive line, who knows what they’re talking about, if you ask them what’s the number one reason why they’re so good on the offensive line, I bet you one of the top two or three things they say is continuity. And there’s just no question about it that continuity does help. It’s it’s not always uh, you know, we got to go out and we’ve got to get the the allp pro at every position. It’d be nice to have that recognition, you know, from any player on the offensive line that you’ve got. It’d be nice if you had guys getting recognized and going to the Pro Bowl year after year, but ultimately if you have continuity, I feel like those types of recognitions, they will eventually start to come. And I believe that is going to happen for the Broncos. It’s not like they’ve just got five guys out there who, all right, we’re okay with these guys in the way that they play. They play really well. They know their job. They do their job well. They’ve been mostly durable. Knock on wood, right, for that one. And I think that it’s going to continue this year for this Denver Broncos team. So having a young quarterback, a young offensive core, it’s imperative that the offensive line is not something that they’re worried about week after week, uh especially over the course of an 18week season. And not only do the Broncos have great continuity amongst their starting five on the offensive line, but despite the fact that they haven’t drafted an offensive tackle since Garrett BS in 2017, they’ve got developmental pieces on the offensive line this year and have had for the last couple of years that I believe are going to be crucial to the future of this team as well. We’ll tell you all about it coming up next on today’s episode. locked on Broncos. They say oftentimes that you’re only as good as your depth in the NFL. And if that’s the case, the Denver Broncos, they’re going to be good on the offensive line in a number of different ways, right? We talked about how important continuity is. And not only do the Denver Broncos have continuity amongst their starting five, but they also have some continuity and intriguing potential developmental pieces uh behind those guys, which is really exciting because they haven’t drafted many players, especially not at offensive tackle where it’s been the better part of a decade since they drafted a tackle Broncos country. And uh that’s exactly what we’re going to talk about today. who are these developmental pieces to be watching as training camp gets underway here in 2025. But before we talk about that, I just want to say once again, thank you to all of you that make us your first listen of the day every single day. But as we talk about developmental pieces on the offensive line, you can’t you can’t start anywhere except Alex Palesky, I believe, in my opinion to be the the top developmental piece that the Denver Broncos have on their offensive line. Now, they didn’t draft a tackle in Shawn Payeyton’s first year with the team when Zack Strife joined him as offensive line coach, but Alex Palesky, an all-American at Illinois, he was one of the team’s premier free agent acquisitions after the draft. And based on the bonus that they paid him back then, you would could have easily said that he had a draftable grade by the team and they prioritized keeping him on the roster. He had a great camp, had a great preseason back in 2023. The Broncos kept him around. And obviously since then, in two seasons with the team, he’s not only gotten on the field, but he actually started a little bit last year in place of an injured Mike McGllinchi at right tackle and even stepped in briefly at the guard position. So, he’s got some swing abilities, but Shawn Peyton said last year during training camp that the team really believes he is a right tackle only going forward. That’s due to maybe athletic limitations, maybe length limitations, whatever it is with their offense that they see as being necessities for left tackle. Palesy is going to play on the right side. And he was really good when he started for the Broncos last year. I mean, I know the Bucks didn’t end up being the best pass rushing team in the league, but certainly for the Bucks and the Jets, the two teams that he started against, man, you can’t help but think that he held his own. and more than holding his own. Like he pitched a shut out against the Bucks and it was impressive stuff. So you go back and watch some of that tape and he’s doing a great job of getting his hands inside, keeping guys in front of him, great footwork, all those sorts of things that you can kind of tell if you’re not an offensive line coach, and I’m certainly not an offensive line coach, but you can tell, hey, this is good or this is bad or this guy’s getting beat consistently or this guy is not getting beat consistently. Palesky falls into that category of this guy just doesn’t get beat consistently. He’s hard to get by because he’s a very smart player and he understands the the pass rush plan of the guys that he’s going against very well. And so don’t want to make any mountains out of Mole Hills just yet, but I would say that I believe Alex Palesky has future starter potential for the Denver Broncos and it may be at right tackle depending on, you know, down the line what happens with Mike McGllinchi or maybe it’s at guard. I don’t know what hap what could happen there with those two contracts that the Broncos brought on in 2023 with Mike McGllinchi and Ben Powers. You never know when the team’s going to have to move on from a big contract to keep other guys around. And so could be something to monitor there, Broncos country. But another guy that the team really believes in is Frank Crumb. Last season the Broncos did not they did not even try. They didn’t flirt with they did not even attempt to get Frank Crumb onto the practice squad. And I think they felt like they kind of lucked out getting him after the draft in the first place. Former Wyoming star was I mean borderline a 10 out of 10 on the RAS scale, right? The relative athletic score scale where he just flat out dominated the workouts in the pre-draft process. I mean he showed like at 6’8, 300 plus pounds, he is not stiff. He has great athletic talent. He’s explosive. He can move extremely well. And you get a guy like that in the mix that can develop under Zack Stref who has proven his weight in gold at this point as the offensive line coach and now he’s gotten a promotion this off seasonason from the Denver Broncos as well. But you trust that guy with young players who have that kind of talent on the offensive line and I think Frank Crumb we will see in this year’s preeason and training camp. I’m really excited to see his growth. I mean, we don’t talk a ton about the offensive line here at Lockdown Broncos because it’s one of those things that, like I mentioned, you kind of just go to bed at night and you rest easy thinking about the offensive line. You don’t have to wonder who’s going to start here, who’s going to start there, are the Broncos going to be able to keep this guy, they not only have enviable continuity, but they’ve got guys that are now under contract for the most part. And you just kind of feel like after what we saw from Kushenberry taking that jump in 2023, the first year under Zack Strife, and then Luke Watenberg taking a huge jump at center, that not the Broncos may not just be able to throw anybody out there, but they might just be able to throw anybody out there at center. And so you get excited about these young guys on the offensive line getting an opportunity here in the preeason and in training camp. And I do think that we’re going to see um some of these veterans maybe getting some days off during camp so that the Broncos can get a look at players like Frank Crumb, Alex Palesky, and some other guys that we’ll talk about in the starting lineup. We already saw last year Alex Foresight, another developmental piece, a seventh round pick back in 2023. I mean, yes, he had the gaff against Kansas City on special teams, but he played pretty darn well when he filled in for an injured Luke Watenberg at center last year, especially in the run game. Almost felt like the Broncos run game was at the best that we saw when Foresight was out there. And so, he brings that physical element, that physical aspect to the game and also had the benefit of snapping to Bicks when they were at college for a year together. So, it I think the depth that the Broncos have, Matt Parrot coming back once again on another one-year deal. He was the sixth man on the offensive line last year and was somebody that they brought in for their jumbo packages. You’re going to see that again this coming season in all likelihood, unless the team’s like, you know what, Frank Crumb, he can go do this. And shoot, we might even throw Frank Crumb a pass. The guy’s got some decent speed out there at the, you know, a jumbo tight end or, you know, six offensive tackle position. You never know what could happen. You don’t want to count your chickens before they hatch when it comes to roster building in the NFL today. But certainly you believe if the Broncos made a concerted effort to bring back Matt Per that they want him in that capacity and maybe he’s that swing guy, maybe he is the jumbo guy. Whatever the case may be, they brought him back. And they also made another priority addition after the draft by bringing in Klay Webb. little bit of a situation that led to him going undrafted in terms of a a thing that he did back in high school that obviously NFL teams you ask guys about these sorts of things and you get answers and you never know what teams are going to do if they’re going to take a guy like that off their draft board. Um ultimately in terms of the legal process, he was cleared of anything with that incident and so he’s not facing any sort of league discipline and it seems like now the Broncos can just kind of feel good about having him around. They feel good about the person and Shawn Payeyton reinforced that when he was asked during the offseason program that the team does feel good about Klay Webb. they like him and they believe that he can be something because they paid him accordingly in terms of his guaranteed money to be brought in, one of the top three guys that the Broncos picked up after the draft. And certainly as a former big-time recruit who played a little bit at Georgia before transferring to Jacksonville State, the guy’s got some chops, right? He was a big-time recruit on the interior offensive line, played pretty strictly left guard at Jacksonville State. And so you wonder, are we going to see him cross trainining a little bit at the center position? Are we going to see him strictly at left guard for the Broncos? I would say guard is that one area on the team right now where yes, Calvin Throckmorton brings the the experience to that spot, but it’s certainly not a situation where you’re thinking, “Oh yeah, the Broncos at guard. They they’ve just got dudes, you know, they’ve got guys that are they they can play, right?” I mean, I think that’s where Klay Webb can really be a factor. The same is true of 2024 seventh round pick Nick Garulo who was kind of a draft and stash guy last year in the same way that Frank Crumb was a you know signing stash. The Broncos had Garulo on the practice squad for the majority of the year. And I think he was kind of hiding out on there with an injury, you know, that he suffered maybe in training camp or the preseason and then late in the year the team brought him onto the active roster, which is indicative of the fact that they were maybe fearful of losing him to another team that was perhaps sniffing around and seeing if he was available or if if they could maybe offer him a spot on their roster. So, if the Broncos think highly enough of him to keep him around like that, it kind of makes you wonder as we get into training camp, should we be, you know, penciling in nine offensive linemen or should we be penciling in 10? Because that’s the the big question at this point is how many guys does this team want to continue to develop behind the scene? And of those guys that they want to develop, how many can they keep on the practice squad? And if they can’t get any of these guys to the practice squad that they really like, what are we going to see in terms of, you know, does Matt Per get cut, Calvin Throck Morton? I I think you’re much more likely to be able to keep a guy like Throck Morton on your practice squad as opposed to cutting somebody that you just signed after the draft or somebody that you just drafted last year. So, I think we’ll see the Broncos take that route. I wouldn’t be shocked if they if the team keeps only two quarterbacks. I wouldn’t be shocked to see 10 offensive linemen, but I’m going to go with nine. As of right now, Broncos country, I’m g say the team keeps nine offensive linemen on the roster this coming season. And I think that it is going to be the starting five that we’ve mentioned with BS, Powers, Watenburgg, Miners, and McGllinchi. And then you have obviously Pesky, Matt Parrot, Alex Forsythe, and then it could be one of either Nick Garulo or Clay Webb for that last spot there. So, we’ll see. Broncos country. We’ll see what ends up happening. I for one though am really excited for the first time in a long time to see the development of young guys on the offensive line because you already know your your starting five is solidified. Don’t have to worry about those guys. Don’t have to lose any sleep over them. You can kind of just watch these young players develop and see how much have they grown from year one to year two or in some cases year two to year three. That’s going to be fascinating and it could create some interesting drama down the road. But for now, Broncos got to feel good about having the best offensive line. Not just the best starting five, but I would say the best overall offensive line unit in the entire NFL. And uh Zack Stre, he deserves that raise that he got this off seasonason. But Broncos country, our training camp previews will continue on our next episode of the show as we take an in-depth look at the interior defensive line with the Denver Broncos finally at the doorstep of training camp starting on July 22nd. So, we’ll catch you then. Thanks for tuning in today. We appreciate y’all so much.

Letsssss go Broncos, mahalos. my favorite broncos daily channel always look forward to the updates
Rookie deals should be 100% guaranteed but not count vs the cap if cut. Pay the kids but let the team move on if needed. these deals are a drop in a bucket compared to the mega deals top end guys get.
Finally!!
