MLB LIVE🔴 Arizona Diamondbacks vs St. Louis Cardinals – Jul 18, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
Alongside Chris Singleton, I’m John Shambi. The first half of the All-Star break is behind us and partner, it’s go time in the second half. And if you want to be playing meaningful games at the end of September, you got to put your head down and grind for the next eight weeks. It’s the St. Louis Cardinals and the Arizona Diamondbacks. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. Just about ready to go towing the slab in today’s game. Merryill Kelly and Singi. We were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure. He’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. Most guys, they get a little tight, they start to aim the baseball. But for some reason, he gets looser. The ball comes out of his hand with more life, and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of the tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. Brendan Donovan leading things off and takes a strike. First pitch 640. Swing and a pop off in foul ground. reaching for it, makes the catch. Now we take a check of the St. Louis Cardinal lineup. And singing, I’m a bit surprised to see this many righties in the lineup against a right-hander. Yeah, you’re not the only one, Boo. I’m a bit surprised as well. And you know, some hitters work well against same-handed pitching. You know, just back in 2024, Bobby Whit Jr., Vlad Guerrero Jr., and Aaron Judge all had higher batting averages against righties than they did against lefties. So maybe they got a plan after all. And that one is lifted in the air. Carol makes the catch and a couple of quick outs. That third right fielder Alex Berles. Two down, base is empty. And now the right fielder Alec Burlson. Kelly, 36 years old, and he was drafted in the eighth round back in 2010. Next offering is fouled back. 0 and2 now. That one just misses. Really good take, especially with two strikes. on the ground to third. Suarez over to first that ends the frame and down in order go the Cardinals. And now the Diamondbacks will get their first turn at bat. No score. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here at Chase Field on the mound for this one. Steven Matz. Well, coming into this game, hitters are batting under 250 against this starting pitcher. So, it just shows you how effective he’s been. He’s been able to move his pitches around, add and subtract, change up the look so that hitters don’t get too comfortable and start squaring up the baseball. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. Corbin Carroll, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. And a 10. That one missing inside. [Applause] Well, as a hitter, you’re hoping that the command on that sinker doesn’t come until later in the ball game. But if that’s how it’s going to be all day, it’s going to be a tough one for the offense. twins and misses. It’s a strike out. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. Left-handed batter facing a left-handed pitcher that’s got some sink like that at the end. It’s just the bottom falls out of it when it looks like it’s going to be a pretty good pitch in that location that everyone says lefties love. Now, the number two hitter, Jake McCarthy. That one catches the corner for a strike. One strike. [Music] Slider for a strike. This guy at the dish excels in two strike counts. Got to be careful with him out there on the mound. That’s down and in. One ball, two strike. One out. Base is empty. Nice grab. Now a jump throw in time. Got him. Setting third. Short stop. Heraldo Po. Two outs. Space is empty. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Peraldo Purdomo and that’s in for a strike. Oh, and one and a seed into center. That’s a base hit. And that extends the inning. Batting fourth, first baseman. Here’s Josh. Naylor. Inside. Just missed. Next offering is in for a strike. And a pitch on the ground to third. They take the force out. That ends the inning. One left for the Diamondbacks. Scoreless after one. Back here in the desert. New inning getting started. Here’s the veteran first baseman Wilson Contrus. That one’s in there. Strike one. right through there for a strike quickly in an 02 hole. You’re going to have to give something up here in terms of power if you want to put the ball in play with any authority [Applause] and ball one. [Applause] Good job to fight that one off. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. [Applause] That one just misses. And that’s ball two. Close pitch there. And he’s kind of wondering where it missed. You know, getting a feel for each umpire strike zone is something that pitchers and hitters really have to think about and work on from game to game and sometimes from at bat to at bat. BS it back with two strikes. And there’s a ball. battling here as he fouls it away. Oh, he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit, try to move it around, create just a little bit of illusion at the end. Swings and misses. Strapped him out. That cutter right there had just enough movement on it to get the swing and miss. Wasn’t a great location by any means. That’s typically a spot that hitters can handle. So, I’d say he fooled him with just enough of that late action. Thomas Sajayzi in now. Takes ball one off the plate. No score here in the second. That’s in there and it’s one and one. Goodness. I think he just took the best pitch he’s going to see in this at bat. You don’t get many like that in that location. I don’t know if you take that pitch against any pitcher out there on the mound. One down, base is empty. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Just indecisive in that at bat. He couldn’t commit to the slider. Tried to sit in between. Just not able to put the bat on the ball. Mason win next up for the Cardinals. And this is inside. Two outs. Base is empty and that’s through there for a strike left field. Guriel trying to get there and he makes the catch and that is that. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. And welcome back to the ballpark. Hen Suarez up to the plate now. Oh, he’s been having a great year this year and hitting home runs at a good clip and the matchup is very favorable. You can do it. Hit hard on the ground and up the middle. Base hit. Solo runner aboard to start the inning. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know, they used to say charge it crazy. Here’s Lordis Guriel Jr. Just missed. One and0. Suarez gets his lead at first. Nobody out. That one hit the knees for a strike. That’s a great take right there. Even though it’s a strike with the situation, runner on first base, you want to keep the ball off the ground and you swing at that pitch, most likely you roll into a double play. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another ground ball left side. Could be two. Glove flip for one. Back to first and that is a double play. Very smooth on the feed to second right there. You got to love that glove toss. You know sometimes People think these guys are being a little flashy, but it actually can make more sense to do that than try to make a full transfer. And got to remember these guys work on that play all the time. So, it’s in their back pocket whenever they need it. Alec Thomas stands in here, takes ball one low. Chopper right side. Donovan. Inning over. Diamondbacks down quickly. We’ll move to the third with no score. And we’re back. Well, here we go. Top of the third scoreless game. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Jose Fairine. Kelly back to work to third. Tosses to first and a quick out number one. Ready eight catcher Pedro Pes. And now the Cardinals catcher Pedro Pahes. Looking good. Hit hard on the ground to short. Perdomo on to first. First two batters retired here in the top of the third. Batting ninth center fielder Victor Scott II. And stepping in is the speedy Victor Scott. Singing. You got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean, watching him track balls in the outfield, it is beautiful. Just missed. He’s so solid. Calms the heart rate of the pitcher and the manager when the ball goes up in the air. You just automatically assume that it’s an out every time it’s hit in the air and it skips in the dirt. There’s one guy that I can think about, Boo, who started as a third baseman, Alex Gordon, and then became an elite perennial gold glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals. But he’s a guy when you watch him play, you would imagine that that’s all he ever played in his life was the outfield. Swing and a pop off in foul ground. Catcher tosses the mask, settles under it. He’s there. He’s got it. And that’ll do it. One, two, three for the Cardinals. Still no score. As we go to the last of the third, here’s the second base, Bla1 Alexander. Blaze Alexander. And that one is downstairs. One and0. Yeah, some guys just have instincts, right? I mean, that’s the way it goes. We talk about Larry Walker, the Hall of Famer, and his instinct on the bases, despite the fact that he didn’t play a ton of baseball as a kid. Tracks it down for the out and there’s one down. Nothing instills more confidence in a team than a center fielder who makes a great play like that on the run. They can feed off the energy he brings just from his playmaking abilities. Remember Mark Katse was a real good defensive outfielder. Good instincts, not great speed. Jose Herrera at the plate now. That’s ball one. Yeah. And I figured you would get Kat into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. Swinging a miss and the count even at one. One and one. Slapped foul. Still tied at zero. Last of the third. Swing in a miss and he got him. And now two gone. Oh, really went aggressive in with that slider. Good two strike pitch right there at worst case scenario. It’s weak contact in play. Exactly where he and the catcher wanted it. Back to the top of the lineup. Corbin Carroll the next to hit. And the first pitch misses for ball one. And that one fouled off. [Music] Hard hit right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Nothing doing for Arizona and we’re still knotted at zero. Back here at Chase Field, John Chi with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Brendan Donovan. in there for a strike at the top of the zone. Well, he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there. Couldn’t pull the trigger and perhaps the best pitch you’ll see in this at bat to hit. Naylor steps on the bag. That’s the first out in the top of the four. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. And now it’s Ivonne Herrera. He’s 0 for one. Ball one there. Herrera 24 years old and he was born in Panama on the ground. slings to first. Two quick outs here in the top of the four. Up next for the Cardinals, rightfielder Alec Berles. Alec Burlson next up for the Cardinals. Hot shot to third. Whips it to first. St. Louis goes down in order. Redbirds down quietly and we are still scoreless. Back here in the desert. Bottom four. Now it’s going to be Jake McCarthy. Hitter Jake McCarthy. Check swing called strike. [Music] A little bit high. Maybe one ball, one strike. And that’s a base hit. Just kind of slice that one into center. That can be a really tough pitch to handle. a front door breaking ball, but he did a great job staying in there, keeping that front shoulder closed. He didn’t spin off the ball and hook it foul, which happened so many times. And now, let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. Heraldo Peromo stands in now for the Diamondbacks. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Well, here’s a good opportunity in this inning to get on the scoreboard after that leadoff hit. And hardly order coming up right behind them. This is where they need to get going. Step off throw to first. McCarthy back on a dive [Applause] with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. [Music] [Applause] in the dirt. And the runner stays where he is. [Applause] That’s the ball. Two balls. Two strike. [Applause] line and that’s a base hit. Stop sign goes up at third. Runners at the corners, nobody out. A perfect example right there. That plate discipline, it pays off. The deeper he gets into account, the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle. So, runners at the corners, nobody out. And now it’s Josh Naylor. There’s the strike. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. And that one fouled off. [Applause] That’s down and in. One and two. Runners at the corners. Nobody out. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. [Applause] And the one two misses to even the count. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Au Suarez up to hit now. Scoreless here, but now he’s got to deal with a guy who’s got some power. Got to be careful when you’re talking about a hitter with this type of slug and these type of home run totals. Check swing and he went. That’s strike one. McCarthy the runner at third. Pertomo at first. One gone. Ground ball to first. Could be two. Here’s win for one. Back to the pitcher covering. It’s a double play. Nicely done. And that’ll do it. No runs on two hits. No errors and a runner left. Onto the top of the fifth we go. No score. And welcome back to the ballpark. And here’s the first baseman, Wilson Contrus. And that one upstairs, ball one. You know, these cards just aren’t putting together very many good at bats in this one. We’re in the back half of the game and they’re still searching for a base runner. He’s been great out there on the mound, no doubt. But it’s also been a disappointing performance at the plate to this point. And as we get deeper, it’s not going to get any easier. These at bats are going to feel more and more desperate with every out the rest of the way. The 1-1 is fouled off. And that one ripped into right. Makes a nice grab and a full sprint. One up, one down. That was just a great jump route to the bar. Well, it had to be. He was going to cover all that ground and bring in that sinking liner. That’s the way it had to be done. Nice job. [Applause] Saj Jay-Z stands in now and watches strike one. If I’m at the dish right now, I am aggressive over the heart of the plate. This guy’s been filling up the strike zone. So swing and this one’s blasted. It’s got a chance and it’s caught just in front of the wall. Well, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. And the batter will be the shortstop. Mason Win fly to left his first time. On the corner for a strike and it’s 0 and one. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the fifth. [Music] This guy’s not wasting any pitches. Hitters got to get into swing mode. This is a good time to expand the zone. Throw something maybe down in the dirt. Got him. Larry Bullard rings him up. Nothing doing there for St. Louis. Halfway through this one. Still no score. And we’re back. And it’s Lordis Gore Jr. Back left fielder Lordis Guriel Jr. that hits the dirt. Ball one. You know, these Dbacks just aren’t putting great swings on the baseball in this one. They’re trying to find ways to drive the ball with some authority, but it’s just not happening for him so far. Zero extra base hits in the game. So, it’s been tough for him to get anything going. Swang and a line drive ripped right center field. That’s a base hit. And a good start to the inning. Well, they call that an advantage count for a reason. You’re so much more likely to get something you can handle. Pretty much a model swing on that one as he ripped it into the opposite field gap. And I’m sure he’s going to be watching that one back on video because that’s the kind of swing you want to bottle. So many positives that led to that knock. Alec Thomas now bunting and he pops it up. Makes a leaping grab for the Sometimes you have to keep chipping away until you break through. It’s a lot easier to put runs on the board when you have guys in scoring position because they put themselves there. So, up next, Bla1 Alexander definitely wants to stay out of the double play here. Ball on the ground in the infield. Should be an inning ending double play. on a line. Lunges for it, but it gets down. Throw comes into third and the throws off line. Safe at third. Oh, just a nice job coming through in a pretty high lever spot right there. Everything was on time and fluid in that swing. Got a pitch he could get the barrel on and lined it into center for the knock. Those always feel good. A chance now to take the lead and at this point in the game that could be a deciding run. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Steven Matz gives way and that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today. Gave him some length. Back with a new arm after this. Pitching change here, Matthew Liberator. And he’s been hit pretty hard at times this year. So he’s looking for better right now. Giving up more than a hit for any. Runners at the corners here. One away. Here’s the catcher. Jose Herrera struck out swinging his first time. Swing and a foul back and that’s out of play. At the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning ending double play. Boo. [Applause] [Applause] the 02 and a foul ball. He stays alive. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Two on, one out. This one in the air right field brings it in. Runner tagging from third. Run scores easily and it’s one- nothing. There you go. Nice little RBI there. It’s a great back. Got the job done. [Applause] This is Corbin Carroll 0 for two in this one. [Applause] inside and it’s one and0. Alexander off of first with two away [Applause] right side and that is the third out of the inning. A run on two hits and they leave one. Five innings complete. It’s the Diamondbacks one and the Cardinals nothing. Back here at Jace Field. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six. Here’s the left fielder, Jose Fairmine. Kelly back to work just off the inside edge. And that misses ball two. Founding ball here. Rolls foul. That misses the zone. And now three and one now in this three ball count down in the ball game. You’ve got to be very selective. Take your walk if they’ll give it to you. Chopped out towards short. Perdomo slings it across. Now one gone in the top of the six. Now batting catcher Pedro P. And here’s the catcher Pedro Pah grounded out his first time. Go slice to right. Carol calls it in. Two away. Now batting the center fielder, Victor Scott the second. Now on for St. Louis, Victor Scott. He’s one of the faster guys just by pure sprint speed in the majors. We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it. But pushing the offensive side for just a second, Chris, it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most. Well, he gets to balls that get by most people at that position. Just really impressive because there’s certain times a ball comes off the bat automatically that team that hit it thinks that they’ve got a base hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away. And that one missing low. The Cardinals still looking for their first hit in this one. Swinging a miss. Struck him out. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. And down in order go the Cardinals. They still trail one- nothing. Back here in the desert. And now the DH Jake McCarthy. Designated hitter Jake McCarthy. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. The other way and foul ball [Applause] and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. on the ground right side and that’s one out as they get the lead off hitter in the six. Now batting shorts stop Heraldo Peromo. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Heraldo Purdomo. He’s two for two. And that’s a little bit high. And that’s ball one. One ball. Base is empty. One away here in the bottom of the six. Next offering is fouled back. [Music] So a foul ball makes it one and two. Ground ball left side and foul ball. Cut on and lifted in the air and that’ll fall for a base hit. So a man aboard now with one away. Oh, this has been a really nice game at the plate for him. He looks locked in. Kind of a risky pitch coming inside with the breaking ball like that. You have to bury it. Otherwise, it’s not too difficult to get the bat to it like he did that time. Man at first with one gone. Next to hit for Arizona, Josh Naylor fouls one off out of play. Back to our left. Let’s go back. He never moved because he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Let’s get it going. The one-1 is fouled off. [Music] Next offering misses down and away. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. Pertomo leads off first with one away. Fast is outside. Fouls that off to the left and will do it again. Got him swinging. Come on now. Au Heno Suarez stands in now for the Diamondbacks. One for two. That one close rule to ball and that’s ball one. just missing off the plate there according to the umpire and out there on the mound maybe trying to get an explanation. Can’t say he’s convinced, but it looks like he’s accepted it. And another ball. Two balls. No strike. That one misses and now three and 0. So now two on and two outs. Not what he wanted to do right there. Boo. That keeps this inning alive. Puts a runner in the scoring position and a chance for this offense to add on to their lead. First and second, two outs. Here’s Guriel. Guriel gets a piece. That one the other way. And that’s a fair ball. Round third. Headed for the plate. One run is in. Headed for the plate and he’s out. Cut down and that ends the inning. One run, a pair of hits, no errors, and one left on. Seventh inning coming up. It’s the Diamondbacks two and the Cardinals nothing. All set for the start of the inning. And now it’s going to be Brendan Donovan. Late swing, fouled to the left. and he grounds one to the right side and that’s just fouled. [Applause] That’s a little bit low. One and two. [Applause] swings through it and that’s a strike out. A big first out here in the seventh via the punch out. Yeah, it just does so much to change the outlook of an important like this when you got the leadoff hitter. So critical in setting the table when you got a tight game like this. So a strikeout really puts them on their heels. Carrera in the box now. No balls in a strike. I really like how he’s been attacking hitters early in at bats. He’s told strikes on the first pitch to over 70% of the guys he’s faced in this one. One down, base is empty. Swing and a highf fly ball left field. Guriels the chance. Well, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that a hitter or two is bone spot. They should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. [Applause] Burlson in the box again. Takes the strike. Fast ball for a strike. Two down, nobody on here in the top half of inning number seven. Highfly ball down the left field line. Guriel makes the grab and that’ll end it. The perfection continues. 21 straight had been retired. It’s the Diamondbacks two and the Cardinals nothing. [Music] Now pitching for Sunny Gray on a pitch out of the pen here. And he’s been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year. Typically at least one in innings, so he’ll be tough to get to. Alec Thomas stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Center fielder. Alec Thomas. line to right and that’ll be a base hit. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Everything came together for him. That’s a good sound coming off the bat, man. And as he connected out front, dipped it into the outfield. That’s one of those swings where you just don’t even feel the ball hit the barrel. That’s a pure stroke. Now a chance for Bla1 Alexander. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. movement in the bullpen. Jojo Romero, the left-hander, is getting that big fast ball of his ready to go. Ley getting loose as well. [Music] Come on. Come on. You can do it. Ball to strike. The pitch and that drops in for a strike. [Music] Stays alive. [Applause] That just misses. Two balls, two strikes. The count. Thomas on at first. Nobody out. Fights it off. He’ll see another. And it remains two and two. [Music] Gets a piece and stays alive. Highf fly ball right field. Burlson under this one. Then there’s one down. [Music] Now batting catcher Jose Herrera. And here is Jose Herrera. [Applause] Fast in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Man at first. One away. fought off foul. All right. Pitch misses. One and two to count. [Music] Let’s do it. missed inside with the curb. Well, he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here, too. Two. He’s already seen the curve ball couple of times in this at bat, so might have it timed up and ready for it. And the sweeper is off the plate. At this point in the game, you cannot issue free passes. He’s going to have to challenge this hitter. Hitter’s got to be ready to swing it. in the air. Left field down the line. Fine. Pulls it down and there’s two gone. [Music] Now batting right fielder Corbin Carroll. So two down now. And here is Corbin Carroll 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. Right through there for a strike. Runner on the move. Foul ball. Two outs. Good job to fight that one off. Swearing and a miss. Struck him out. One left for Arizona, but they’re on top two nothing. And we’re back ready to begin the eighth. Here’s Contras now. Contras Kelly into his eighth inning of work singing. He’s been good. Yeah, he’s the type of guy that gets better as he gets deeper into the ball game. If you’re going to get to him, you get to him early. They didn’t do that today. We’ll see what happens as this finishes. In for a strike and two pitch count in great shape. It seems he might have a chance to finish it. And a swing to miss. Down on strikes. And that’s sixks for him in this one. Oh, there’s a three pitch strike out. He can do whatever he wants with the baseball right now. Now the third baseman, Thomas Sajay-Z. Still a ways to go, but this is can’t miss stuff right now. And a first pitch fast is in for a strike. That’s a bullet, but it goes foul. [Applause] Pitch misses outside and count one and two. The Cards hitless so far in the game. Fights that one away. Still one and two. [Applause] That misses off the outside edge. Swing at a ball lifted to center field. Thomas gets under it. Makes the grab for the second out. Man, he’s getting really close to this thing right now. Only four outs left, but it’s going to be tough to get. Two down, base is empty. And up next for St. Louis, Mason Win. [Applause] That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Well, it’s been a very impressive outing so far. His command has been a big part of it. Even when he misses, he misses outside the strike zone, which is exactly what a pitcher wants. Next offering is in for a strike. That clips the corner. One ball. [Music] That misses. Two balls, two strikes. [Applause] fouled off and they’ll do it again. Two down to foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. [Applause] That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. This one in the air. Alexander. He’s got it. And that is out number three. 1 2 three go to Cardinals. They trail it here. Two nothing. Now pitching for Kyle Ley into the game. He’s pitching on two days rest. Now it’s the DH Jake McCarthy. One for three. Hitter Jake McCarthy at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. Ah, that hit him and the lead off man is aboard to start the inning. Man at first, nobody out. Stepping in is the switch in short stop. Peral three for three with three singles. takes off. He swings and fouls one off. Next offering is fouled back. McCarthy aboard here at first with nobody out. Squirts away a little bit. [Applause] [Music] And they’ll do it again. [Music] One and two here. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. [Music] And now the count is even. [Applause] Lifted in the air right center field. Touches down. That’s a hit. And they’re at the corners with nobody out. Showed a lot of fight with two strikes in that AB. Put a pretty good jolt into that one. Great swing, nice balance and weight transfer. And he got it to drop in out there in the deep part of the field. Josh Naylor stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Fast for a strike. 0 and one. [Music] Come on, let’s go. Fast ball on the inside corner for a strike. [Music] swing and a miss and he is down on strikes for the third straight at bat. So he needed a strike out there and he got it and now we’ll see how they played defensively. Yeah, now they can move the middle infielders back a little bit. Get into double play depth then look for a ground ball and roll it up, get a big double play, get out of this inning. I tell you what, that was a big strikeout in a spot where they really needed one. Au Heno Suarez stands in now for the Diamondbacks. First pitch misses. One ball. No straight. [Applause] And that drops in for a strike. Dangerous spot for that slider right there. didn’t seem to quite finish out front and get that sharp break. Tell you what, he doesn’t want to throw that pitch again. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. In comes a runner from third. It’s an RBI single and they take a threerun lead. Big at bat to pad their lead up to three. Got the top of the ball a little bit but not much. That was hit pretty hard through the infield so I think he’ll be happy with that swing. Definitely generated some good bat speed. Lordis Goreel Jr. stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Slides for the stop. There’s one to first. Not in time. Great effort there. Just so impressed with the movement on that play. But work was excellent. The arm strength was there. And of course, the most important part was getting the out. So digging in Alec Thomas [Applause] and a breaking ball drops in for a strike. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Jojo Romero. The southpaw is throwing and getting that sinker dialed in. [Applause] Missed with a change up and one and one. One strike. Brothers on first and third. Two away here. in the bottom half of the eighth inning. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Back up the Oh, that got him. In comes the run from third to add on. It’s an RBI single and they’re up by four. And now they’ll hustle out to check on him. That was quite a shot he took as you see him down on the knee. Yeah, clearly in some real pain, but he will not want to come out of this game if he doesn’t have to. It’s looking to me like he’s going to try to shake it off and continue. Here comes the manager out of the Cardinals dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Kyle Ley is done and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. back with a new pitcher after this. Now pitching for new pitcher for the Cardinals, Jojo Romero. Well, I got to think he probably has a little extra in the tank facing his former team. And there’s not a player in the league that doesn’t get a little extra motivation when he plays against his old squad. First and second, two outs. Now up next for Arizona, Bla1 Alexander. And that’s in there at the knees for a strike. That one ran inside. Almost got him. [Applause] outside low and it’s two of them. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. Hard on the ground to first. Contraras takes it to the bag. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. Merryill Kelly perfect so far. We’ll see if he can make history as we head to the ninth and welcome back to the ballpark. Now the left fielder Jose Fmine and all eyes on the mound as he begins the ninth inning working on a perfect game. And the first pitch misses for ball one. The Diamondbacks with some movement in the pen. Jake Woodford up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. Number 43 also getting ready. [Music] [Applause] Boo. I’ll tell you right now, every player defensively on their toes like never before. They want to make sure they have the opportunity to put this pitcher in the history books. They’re going to make the play. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Here falls it in and there’s one away. And now two outs away from history. Well, I hope he gets this done. I mean, this is the kind of feat that can define a career. Hard not to root for him at this point. He’s two outs away. And now the catcher comes up to him. Pedro Pah. Just missed. the other way. Naylor takes it himself. Two up, two down. 26 up and 26 down. One more out for a perfect game. This is awesome. Boo on the verge of baseball history here and certainly one of the most dominating pitching performances we’ve seen. Everyone locked in right now. And this is it. One out away from perfection. And first offering is fouled off. Two down, nobody on. You’re in the top of the ninth. [Applause] Next offering is fouled back. The Redbirds down to their final strike. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. Going to count one and two. That one called just inside, I think. and on the mound. He’s trying to get a little bit of an explanation. Doesn’t seem to be too bothered by it, though. But he clearly thought it clipped the corner. Two, two. [Applause] swings and he pops it up near the pitchers m and history. It’s a perfect game. Just unbelievable. I was nervous up here in the booth. I can only imagine what his teammates and even he felt out there on the mound closing this thing out. Everyone will remember this perfect game and it’ll be notched in Coopertown forever. [Music] [Applause]
