MLB LIVE🔴 San Diego Padres vs Washington Nationals – Jul 18, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

Just a little bit away from first pitch and on the mound in this one, McKenzie Gore. Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. And it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. Now a fly ball to right center. Young on his way over. Carous it and there’s one down. Let’s take a look at the Padres’s lineup. And Chris, this group has been struggling to put up runs lately. Well, they haven’t been on base a ton. And even when they are, they haven’t been hitting very well with runners on base. So, they need a player or two to really step up, have some quality at bats, hit according to the situation and sort of break out of this. I think if they do, the rest of this lineup will follow. You got this, Mackenzie. Luis Aas in the box with one away as he takes ball one. One out. Base is empty. Next offering is fouled back. Here’s a batter who for whatever reasons plays better on the road and that should help him here today. Swinging a ground ball over to Low and there’s two away. Two down, base is empty. Here’s Machado. Another solid power season. Come on, we need to win. Come on, let’s win. Close but called a ball. One and0. Now it’s one and0. That clips the corner. Two out. Space is empty. And that drops in for a strike. Pretty rare location right there. Right down the middle. This guy paints the edges. I’m not sure if you’re going to see that pitch again as a hitter. Next offering way off the plate. And they’ll do it again. Lifted in the air down the left side and no one can get to it. It’s a foul ball. Two down. Nobody on 3-2 now. Wow, this guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. This one in the air right field. Lyle settles underneath it. He makes the grab and that is that. No score as we head to the bottom of the first. Back here with my pal Singi. Today’s starting pitcher you Darvish. What’s the word on him? Well, coming into this game, hitters are batting under 250 against this starting pitcher. So, it just shows you how effective he’s been. and he’s been able to move his pitches around, add and subtract, change up the look so that hitters don’t get too comfortable and start squaring up the baseball. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. We go to the bottom of the first up now for Washington. CJ Abrams first offering and it just misses. Darvish kicks, delivers base hit left center field. So a man on base to start the inning. Just so sound in his mechanics. Hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field. James Wood digging in for the Nationals. Swing and a miss as he was out front. Oh, and one. Abrams aboard here at first with nobody out. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. 02 is the count. [Music] Grouded to third. Could be two out of Cronin work. Not in time at first. It’s a fieldielder’s choice. Josh Bell at the plate now. Come on, Josh. Right through there for a strike. Just a cement mixer slider right there. It’s a great pitch to hit if you can recognize it early and jump on it. Next offering is fouled back. man at first, one away. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. [Music] And there’s a ball. Two straight. [Music] You can’t hear laser could be troubled around second is low headed for the plate. He’ll score easily. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Kind of a risky pitch coming inside with the breaking ball like that. You have to bury it otherwise it’s not too difficult to get the bat to it like he did that time. One out, runner at second. Nathaniel Low up to hit. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. Check swing called strike. That’s strike one. One out and a runner at second. [Applause] hit hard but foul off to the left. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. That’s off the inside corner. Get a count. One and two. I don’t think he was trying to miss by that much in an 02 count. Just tried to overthrow that pitch. Runner at second here. One gone. And the ball leaves the count. [Applause] That one the other way. Bogarts. Now a jump throw and it beats him. What a play. Batting fifth second baseman Luis Garcia. [Music] [Applause] And now it’s Luis Garcia. Pitch misses inside and that is ball one. [Applause] and base hit. Brown’s third headed to the plate now. A long throw home. Save at the plate and they take a two-run lead. Well done. Drives in the run. Pretty good spot. hard and inside, but that’s a perfect example of keeping your hands inside the ball tight to the body. The ability to take that back up the middle shows his approach is to use the entire field. And here is Brady House in there for strike one. [Applause] perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. He’s going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. [Applause] Outside low. It’s a ball in two strikes. right side. Tatiz drifts towards it. He’s there. He’s got it. And that’ll do it. But two runs for him and they jump ahead. Second inning coming up from our nation’s capital. It’s the Nationals two and the Padres’s nothing. Top of the second. Here’s Gavin Sheets. Now, left hand back Gavin Sheets. This game is too for you. Gore back to work. Swung on. Belted and it’s off the wall. with foul. The next offering misses and the count is one and one. Assigned to home plate duty is Ricky Holiday. Boo. And something I’ve heard players saying about Ricky’s strike zone is how he will call the high strike. That could be something that’s tough to deal with, especially if you’ve got a pitcher out there coming at you with high velocity. That’s down and in. A slider missed. [Music] Come on. Fouled off left side. [Music] [Applause] set him down. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. I’m not sure that was the exact location the pitcher wanted, but it worked. He got the swing and miss and I’m sure a bit of sigh of relief after seeing that one go through the zone. [Applause] Here’s Xander Bogards. [Music] Bogarts playing up the middle at short. 32 years old and he was born in Aruba. Swang and a miss. No balls. Two strikes. strike three and that’s two in a row. Came after him with the fast ball on 02 and that’s a pretty good demonstration of what power pitching is all about. He’s got the stuff obviously and right there he used it to put his opponent away without needing to waste any pitches. Now the batter now Jackson Merrill on the ground right side and foul ball that one missed [Music] All right, just missed. That one pushed to the left and fouled. Two two now. Good eye right there. Was good pitch there. really had some run and finished little up and in just on the edge and that’s one of those if you swing at it a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Three and two the pitch is outside and ball four and that’s how they get their first base runner of the game. Now here’s Jake Croninworth and the first pitch misses for ball one. Merrill leads off first with two down to the inning. Here we go. He swings and fouls one off. In for a strike and it’s one and two. Swing and a miss and he got him. That K is his third of the game. One left for San Diego. They trail things here. Two nothing. Back here in Nationals Park, we head to the bottom of the second. Here’s the rookie right fielder, Don Ly. Here we go. Fun to attempt, but that goes foul. That one down the line. And that’s a fair ball. [Applause] Betting at the plate. Riley Adams. Riley Adams. Well, here’s an interesting stat on Darvish. He has more than 100 wins in his big league career. The only Japanese-born pitcher with more wins is Hideon Nommo, my former teammate. Here comes the pitch. Runner breaks for second. There’s a ball. Throw to second. Tag and they got him. Well, this is a real momentum killer after the leadoff single. Tried to steal second base on the first pitch. Defense was all over it. Nicely done from behind the plate with the catch and throw. Then a quick tag before he reaches the base. [Music] Headed towards the corner. And that’s a foul ball. That one’s in there at the count. One and two. [Applause] Swing and a miss and he’s down on strikes. That’s the second out. Definitely made him chase a little bit out of his own right there. I don’t think that’s a strike if he takes it. Pretty textbook pitching. Get ahead in the count. Get the guy in the box on his heels and then force him to chase your pitch where he doesn’t have much of a chance to do any damage. Swings through that. The strong second inning is a confidence builder for him. A relief for his manager. Doesn’t have to get into that bullpen quite as early. Two outs and one and two. Two strikes. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Two down. Nobody on. Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. And that’s the inning. After two, it’s a two nothing ball game. Back in Washington DC onto the third inning. Now it’s a rookie first baseman Trenton Brooks. [Music] First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Left-hand hitter waits. Ripped to right. Lyall makes the grab. One away. Batty night. Catcher Martine. Martine up to hit. [Applause] And that misses ball one outside corner. There’s a strike. Probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. Ly on the move makes the grab. Two down. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. Tatis stands in with two away as he takes a ball. puts it in the air out towards left center. Young sizing this one up. And that is that [Applause] and welcome back to the ballpark as we go to the last of the third. Here’s CJ Abrams to hit. And the first offering a fast ball for a strike. [Music] Swing and a foul out of play. [Music] That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Way inside. Gets out of the way. Straighten him up a little bit. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Darvish delivers. Fights that one away. Still one and two. And that one ripped to left. Sheets fakes the grab. One down. Man, that’s one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it’s about the process. He did everything right right there. Nothing to show for it, but in your mind, you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat. Ripped to short, fires over to first and two straight set down to begin the bottom of the third. Designated hitter Josh Bell. Two outs. Space is empty. Here’s Josh Bell. Doubled his first time up. And that one just misses a ball and no strikes. the other way, makes the grab, and that’ll end the inning. And the Nationals gone in order as they’re unable to add to their two nothing lead. And we’re back. John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Luis Sas. Here we go. And that one fouled off. Ball. That’s out. [Music] comes up empty. That’s strike two. Just threw that fast grab by him. Elevated. And if you’re not looking up in that location, very difficult to catch up to, especially with that velocity just off the inside edge. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. The two-2 and that skips in the dirt. Now, in this three ball count down in the ball game, you’ve got to be very selective. Take your walk if they’ll give it to you. That one lifted to left. Drops into the glove. One up, one down. Now batting third base Manny Machado. Here comes Manny Machado. Flyed to right his first time. Let’s go DC. Fast for a strike. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. The 01 is outside and it’s a ball and a strike. Base is empty, one away. Top half of inning number four. Hard hit left side. Abrams tosses to first. Machado out on the play. Up next for the Padres’s left fielder Gavin Sheets. Two down base is empty. Here’s the cleanup hitter for the Padres’s Gavin Sheets. He was a strikeout victim his first time. And that gets the inside corner for a strike. Oh, one’s the count. All right, come on. We can do it. Two outs. That misses and the count is one and two. Come on. Two balls, two strikes. And down on strikes he goes. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Nothing doing there for the Friars. They trail it here. Two nothing. Back here in Nationals Park. Here’s Nathaniel Low. First baseman Nathaniel Low. Come on. That clips the corner. He’s been incredibly efficient in this one. first pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point. Swing and a highf fly ball left field sheets. Makes the catch for the out and there’s one down. Now batting second base next to the Nats Luis Garcia RBI single his last time off. They say you win and one swing and a liner foul off to the right. That one not close. Going to count one and two. That’s a really good job of laying off the O2 high fast ball is going to make that pitcher really have to respect this hitter even though he’s behind in the count. Swing and a highf fly ball left field. Sheets pulls it down and he makes the catch. And there’s two away. Now batting third baseman Brady House. Brady House digging in for the Nationals. He’s 0 for one. Let’s go DC. That clips the corner. [Music] One. Really close pitch down around the knees there. And you could see him asking where it missed. probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. The one-1 is fouled off. Two down, nobody on. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth and that’s in the dirt. [Applause] And a swing and a miss. Down on strikes. And a nice inning of work there as he sets him down. One, two, three. Nothing doing for Washington. They’re up two nothing. All set for the start of the inning. Here is Xander Bogard. Bogart. Gore back to work and a foul ball. You know, these Padres’s just aren’t putting together very many good at bats in this one. Just one base runner to this point and it’s not exactly early anymore. They’ve got players in this lineup capable of sparking something, but it just hasn’t happened for him yet. And it’s caught for the out. Now batting center fielder Jackson Merrill. So up next, Jackson Merrill worked a walk at his first trip to the plate. Hey, do it now. And the pitch a little bit low. No strike. That pitch in for a strike. And it’s one and one. [Applause] Swing it a highf fly ball out there towards left field. Wood settles under it and makes the catch. Two down. Now batting second base stepping in for San Diego. Jake Croninworth struck out swinging his first time. Foul ball there. Croninworth 31 years old and he was drafted in the seventh round back in 2015. That’s off the mark. One and one. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning. Anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. Lyle on the move to the alley and puts the squeeze on that one. And that is that. He’s through five without allowing a hit. It’s the Nationals two and the Padres’s nothing. Back in Washington DC, ready to go for the last half of the inning. And now up for Washington, Dalon Ly on the mound. They had a little trouble back in the first, but it’s been a different story the rest of the way. Really settled into this outing nicely. The one hit on the ground to the right side and it goes just foul. The one-1 is fouled off. on the ground to short. Bogarts fields it cleanly over to first and the lead off man set down in their half of the pit. Batting catcher Riley Adams. And here’s the catcher. Riley Adams struck out swinging his first time. Adams started after it. Tried to hold up. Now a look to first. Nope. He held back. Swing and a miss. And now it’s even. One and one. Ball. One strike. And a foul ball. That misses the zone and it’s two and two. [Applause] That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Let’s go. That missed by a lot and it’s three and two. Line to left. Sheets hauls it in for the out. And there’s two away. Now batting the center fielder Jacob Young. Two outs. Space is empty. And stepping in is the speedy Jacob Young. Let’s go Nationals. Now a drag bud third base side and a foul ball. This one lifted in the air left field. Sheets, makes the play and it’s out number three. And welcome back to the ballpark. All set for the top of the six. And here’s the first baseman, Trenton Brooks. And that misses and it’s one and0 and a strike. Swinging a miss. And that’s strike two. It really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today. Good fast ball, excellent slider, but they’ve not been able to commit to one velocity and stay there. Got him swinging. I love to see guys compete and I know he’s frustrated he wasn’t able to do anything with that pitch. You see it so well, but you have to respect the upper 90s velocity, man. It is hard to catch up to. Maldonado takes a ball as he stands in for the second time. The Padres’s down by a pair and we’re the top half of the sixth and now it’s even up. One and one. He’s been going after these guys consistently and as a result he’s been able to keep his pitch count low. Throwing the ball very well right now. A little out front there as he swings through it. just an outstanding job of spinning the baseball, moving it around, doing what he does. That one misses and the count’s even at two. To the right side. He’ll do it himself. Two up, two down. Now batting right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. back to the top of the lineup. And now the right fielder Fernando Tatiz Jr. Bowl for two in this one. And that drops in for a strike. Tonight his slider has been really impressive. I mean tight spin. Seems like the hitters aren’t picking it up out of the hand. Fast ball for a strike. Well, he’s gotten ahead with two pitches down in the zone. He has plenty of options right here. He can go up, he can go away, he can add velocity, he can subtract. That misses the zone and count one and two. Next offering is outside. out to short. He puts it in his pocket. Safe at first without a play. Now batting designated hitter Luis Arise. Runner at first with two away. And now the DH Luis Araz Gore with a move to first. Runner on the go. Pitch misses. Go to Z out there and that ends the inning. The catcher definitely looked ready for that stolen base attempt. got in position quickly and a strike down to second base to end the inning. And we’re back. Bottom of the sixth inning. Now it’s the short stop. CJ Abs first pitch misses. That one ran inside. Almost got him. lifted in the air. Right field. Tatis under it. Puts it away for the out. Now batting left fielder, James Wood. Here’s the left fielder, James Wood. You talk about the power and the speed together. Well, we knew he was going to be a stud just coming up making his way through the minor leagues and quickly at this level an impact player and first offering is fouled off. Base is empty, one away here in the bottom of the six. That one catches the corner for a strike. Let’s see if he’s willing to use the whole field right here. Definitely pounding him away. One down. Base is empty. That misses. One and two to count. One ball, two strikes. The count line drive. That’s a base hit. And they have their first hit since the second inning. Well, that certainly feels good when you can win the atbat after being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there. Nice line drive to the pull side. Met it out front, but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So, we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. And the Padres’s manager making his way towards the mound as he will make the move. That does it for you, Darvish. two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Now pitching for us. And we’ve got ourselves a pitching chance. The offense will need to be ready for the breaking stuff. He’s got a great curveball. And now the switch hitting first baseman Josh Bell. [Applause] Pavetta picks the first. Wood back in on a dive. DC. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Movement in the bullpen. A right-hander appears to be getting loose. Wood leads off first with one away. Late swing fouled to the left. The one-1 is fouled off. [Music] The next pitch misses and the count is even. Two and two. Two strikes. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. Here’s the 2-2. Three swing and a miss. Struck him out. No advance. Good job behind the dish. Well, that’s pretty much the dream two strike curve ball if you’re the pitcher. Hard downward break at the very end that just dips below the swing path. And they say pitchers want to try to bounce that pitch right on top of the plate. So that was exactly what he was looking for on the mound. And next will be the cleanup hitter Nathaniel Low. Pickoff move to first. Wood dives back in safely. First pitch just misses. Looking good natural. Swanging a ball lifted in the air right field. He just missed it. Tatis pulls it down and that will end the inning. So, one left for Washington, but they hold a two nothing lead. We go to the top of the seventh. Luis Arise stands in. there. Seems like the hitters are struggling with their timing today. Kind of caught in between that sharp fast ball and the nasty slider. I’d like to see him settle on a consistent pitch. This pitcher has done a good job of disrupting the hitter’s timing with the mix of pitches and changing speeds. You want to keep that front foot inconsistent for the batter. Their swings are hesitant and that’s exactly what you want on the mound. Activity in the Washington bullpen. Andrew Chaffen getting loose out there. Henry the right-hander also getting loose. Got him. And that’s sixks for him in this one. A big first out here in the seventh via the punch out. Yeah, it just does so much to change the outlook of an important inning like this when you got the leadoff hitter so critical in setting the table when you got a tight game like this. So, a strikeout really puts them on their heels. And now it’s Manny Machado. That one’s in there. 0 and one. The Padres’s trailing by two here in the top half of inning number seven. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. Way back there. Out of here. And they’ve got their first run. It’s 2-1. Well, there goes the shut out. Just like that. They’re still behind, but this is a start. A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. One down. Next to hit Gavin Sheets, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. That’s in there. And that is strike one. [Applause] [Applause] Next offering is fouled back. Pretty good pitch there to take a rip at. He wants to get his arms extended. He likes the ball away from him a little bit. Just not able to square it up. That’s too low now. One and two. [Music] [Applause] And that one upstairs. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Outside corner. Got him looking. Well, he’s going to have some thinking to do when he leaves the ballpark after this one. That was his third strike out and this one looking obviously. So, he’s been a little overmatched. He’s got to find a way just to be more competitive up there at the plate. Here’s Bogards. Now, breaking ball inside. And that’s ball one. [Applause] looking to get the tying run on base. Check swing called strike. [Music] Breaking ball misses down and away. [Applause] line drive knocks it down. The throw is still in time and they do get the out, but not before they’re able to draw closer with this blast. And this is now a 2-1 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Adrien Morie. Definitely a guy that pounds the strike zone, makes hitters earn their way on base, and rarely gets in trouble because of free passes. Up now for Washington, Luis Garcia. Washington, second baseman, Luis Garcia. And that’s a little bit high. And that’s ball one. And another ball. That one ripped but fouled. [Music] Fly ball pretty well struck right field. Jatiz going back and brings it in at the wall. Now batting third baseman Brady House. Next to hit for the Nats, Brady House. swing and a fly ball well struck left fields calls it in two away now batting the right fielder two down base is empty ly the next to hit one for two Come on DC. Swing and a miss. Strike one. Going to really need to hang in there with that front side against this left-handed breaking ball. Swinging a foul straight back. Two down, nobody on here. The bottom of the seventh. Not close with that one. Now one and two. And that skips in the dirt. Just missing there. And the count’s full. [Applause] [Music] Swing and a highf fly ball to left. Sheets makes the catch and go over. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Andrew Chaffen south’s been really good against left-handed hitters. Number 53. Andrew Chaffen. [Applause] Jackson Merrill now at the plate. Centerfielder Jackson Merrill. And ball one activity in the bullpen. Kyle Finnean looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez. [Applause] Swing and a chopper out to short over to Low. First out in the top of the eighth. Good sinker low in the zone right there and produced exactly what he was looking for. Ball on the ground. Nice ground out. Cronin. Jake Croninorth the next up for the Padres’s. Corner infielders guarding the lines trying to prevent extra bases. And the slider just misses. just missed. You don’t want to get beat by a fast ball in and he spits on that one. And that’s outside. Trenton Brooks in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Let’s see if he gives him anything to hit higher. That one’s in there and it’s three and two. That push started in and ended up on the outside edge. Just changing planes and very difficult especially for a left-handed hitter to track. His ability to draw walks has been something that’s been part of his career since day one. One down, runner at first. So digging in now for San Diego, Trenton Brooks. [Applause] They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. Maybe losing command a little bit after the walk. Next pitch, not even close. And another ball. Last two pitches have been down in the zone. Pitcher clearly trying to get that ground ball double play. But in this count, he’s going to have to give in, elevate his pitches, and get back into this at bat. That one misses. And that’s ball three. Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. [Applause] on the inside corner for a strike. That one finds the zone. And now it’s three and two with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. And ball four to a board. Well, a great back and forth in that at bat and lay off some really close pitches and somehow Boogie found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there. I’ll tell you right now, I couldn’t have done it. Two on, one out. Martine Maldonado the next up for the Padres’s. Definitely wants to stay out of the double play here. Ball on the ground in the infield. Should be an inning ending double play. [Applause] counts one and squirts away a little bit. Well done behind the dish. So the tying run at second and that one fouled off at the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning inning double play boo the 1-1 and that’s downstairs and outside. Good spot for the hitter. definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. [Music] Two on, one out. Three balls in the dirt, but kept close, but no advance from the runners. Swings through that one. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. And they’re all loaded up. Man, that’s a tough one to take on the full count, but I guess he saw it really well. It’s a really nice play appearance. Manager out of the dugout now, and he’ll make a move to dip into the Nationals pen. Andrew Chaffen done for the night and he leaves with the bases loaded. So he’ll look for some help from his teammate coming in behind him. Now pitching on a pitch now for the Nationals Henry. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves. Late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. So bases loaded with one away. Now it’s Fernando Tatiz Jr. Golden opportunity right here. [Applause] And that’s downstairs. Ball one. Way to lay off that pitch down. [Applause] Just missed. Pressure’s on right here. Two count. Base is loaded. You don’t want to fall to a three ball count and then walk in a run. He’s got to challenge the hitter right here. [Applause] Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. One runs in. Here’s the throw. Safe. He beat the tag. 32. They take the lead. But when you fall behind in the count, you got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard like he did right there. Stepping in Luis Az for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. swings through that one for strike one. Oh, and one. Traffic on the bases with two already in to score. And we’re in the top of the eighth. [Applause] Next pitch misses and it’s one and one. One and one. just missed. It’s a big opportunity right here, but I love the way he’s slowing the game down. He’s shrinking his zone, making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to hit. Next offering is in for a strike. Well, he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there. couldn’t pull the trigger and perhaps the best pitch you’ll see in this at bat to hit just off the inside corner and it’s a full count. This is a really good feeling for a hitter at this point in the ball game. You know that they don’t want to walk you so you’re going to get a pitch to hit. You just better not miss it. And that’ll load the bases. Oh, this is their chance to break it open. And if they don’t end up winning this ball game, they’re going to look back at this opportunity right here and have some regret. So bases all loaded up. Now it’s going to be Manny Machado. He’s already homered here in this one. Fast for a strike late in the game. Everyone gets a little tighter. A way to get ahead on a really good hitter right there. [Applause] And Manny gets a piece. Well, he missed a hitable off speed pitch right there. Not sure exactly what the timing. Sometimes you get a backup breaking ball. You’re expecting it to make its move and that’s through the swing. It’s a strike out. Now the left fielder, Gavin Sheets. Three strikeouts already. He’s 0 for three. [Applause] First pitch and he just misses. Well, this is a critical spot for both the pitcher and the hitter. You can learn a lot about a guy by how he handles these pressure situations. There’s the strike. Getting a little frustrated with the strike zone. So, they’re all loaded up. [Applause] That’s a bullet, but it goes foul. [Applause] Two outs. on the ground down the line and it’s fouled. Here’s a one, two, this to third. Base hit. One run is in. The second run scores and they take a threerun lead. Oh, that’s a big bat coming through in the clutch to drive in a pair. really protecting with two strikes right there. Pitch wasn’t even close, but man, he got the barrel to it somehow. Nice job of bad ball hitting. Here comes a skipper out of the dugout, and he’s ready to make the move. Cole Henry is done. It’s a three-run game, and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. Now pitching for they turn things over to the southpaw number 16. And this could be a pretty critical point in this game. They’re hoping he’s the guy to keep him within striking distance. And a dangerous hitter coming up to hit in Xander Bogarts. [Applause] Top of the zone and it’s called a strike. Two on, two outs. And that’s a little bit high. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. The shorts stop takes a ball. We got two balls, one strike. Arise the lead runner at second. Sheets at first. Two out of the inning. [Applause] 2-2 now. Good job to fight that one off. [Applause] Fights it off. He’ll see another [Applause] and down on strikes. Inning ends and that stops the bleeding. So, nine batters come to the plate, four of them score. Last half of the eighth coming up, it’s the Padres’s five and the Nationals two. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Jeremiah Estrada coming on to face a righty here. And he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. They bear down and turn in some quality at bats. Try to chip away at that lead because if it gets to the ninth, that closer’s coming in. And that’s him for a strike. Estrada in his second season, he features a fourseam fastball, a slider, and occasionally works in a splitter. Just missed activity in the bullpen for San Diego. Robert Suarez, the closer of the staff, is getting loose to finish this one off. [Music] The 1-1 is fouled off. Foul ball still a one and two count. cut out and miss. Struck him out and one gone. Well, that’s the effect of the splitter that you’re looking for on the mound. Really nice pitch right there and had him out in front over the top. I’m sure the batter was thinking he was getting something else. Perhaps a fast ball with a little more straight and vo to it. Jacob Young digging in for the Nationals. This guy can absolutely fly. I think one of the faster players in baseball. First off, offering and it just misses. The Nationals trailing by three here. Bottom half of the eighth inning. Ripped on a line. Fair ball. Makes the turn and heads for second. And that’s a twobagger. Everything came together for him. It really turned on that one. And as it hooked down the line, it was hard to tell if it would stay fair, but he just barely sneaked in there. Now, a huge at bat in this game coming up. Here’s CJ Abrams now. One for three. [Music] Liner. And this could be trouble. Coming home. He’ll score into second with a double. And they’ve got something brewing now. Well, thirdly, he was ready to hit right there. Just an awesome swing of the bat. Quick hands and just launched the baseball under an eight on the exit velocity. Man, that is coming off the bat pretty good. I know he’s feeling good about it. Really important bat coming up now. And the batter now, James Wood, and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. [Applause] Not even close there. Ball one. [Applause] Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. Popped in the air left field. He makes the catch and there’s two down. Now that a designated hitter, Josh Bell. And now here is Josh Bell. This is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation. Yeah, Boo. Not sure what the numbers say, but clearly an at bat that could change the course of this game dramatically. And that’s fouled off. Two outs and one in scoring position. [Applause] That one hit to right. Tatis sizes this one up and that ends the inning. one for the Nationals on this RBI double. It’s now 53. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. New inning getting started. And now it’s going to be Jacksonfielder Jackson Merrill. [Applause] That one close rule to ball. 1 and0 action in the pen down there. Mitchell Parker the left-hander up and throwing. Ferrer also getting ready. [Applause] That one pushed foul out of play off to the left. Ball to strike to third. on to first and the lead off man retired here in the ninth. Now it’s the second baseman Jake Cronin work [Applause] and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike one. Base is empty, one away. You’re in the top of the ninth. Up the middle, Garcia. That takes care of Cronin Worth. Now batting the first baseman, Trenton Brooks. Now at the plate, Trenton Brooks. [Applause] And first offering is fouled off. Two down. Nobody on and strike two. This guy’s pounding this. Hers don’t have time to think in between pitches. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And that is ball one. [Applause] Got it. Padres’s go down one, two, three. Three up, three down that time. Onto the bottom of inning number nine. 456 coming up. It’s the Padres’s five and the Nationals three. So, the closer summon from the bullpen, Robert Suarez, and he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. Robert Suarez. So now it’s the fourhole hitter Nathaniel Low for three with two fly outs and a ground out. [Applause] Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Nice change up. 02 the count [Music] swings and misses the high heat too much on that one. Well, that right there is what you want to see out of your closer. Come in and close the door, cancel any hope that that opponent has in making some type of comeback in the ball game. Tell you what, that helps him settle in and that helps everybody else relax a little bit to get these other two outs. Garcia at the plate now. That’s ball one. Suarez. A very difficult guy to get hits off of. It’s really rare for teams to string stuff together against him. He wins every pitch. And for a hitter, sometimes a victory is just fouling off one of his pitches. And another ball. Unless he beats himself somehow can’t find it, doesn’t have the control command that day, you can pretty much forget about it. Next offering is in for a strike. As a hitter, there’s even more pressure to take advantage of any mistake, right? Yeah. And you’re hoping that, you know, somehow someway, whether it’s a hit by pitch, a walk, something bad happens because outside of that, stuff is just too good to fail. That one misses. And now three and two. And he’s got deception in his delivery. And it’s not that he’s trying to deceive the hitters. He just has this natural flow that makes it hard for hitters to pick the ball up. It gets on him a little bit quicker than they anticipate, even though they know what the velocity numbers are. One down, base is empty. Up the middle. Croninworth throws down to first. Now only one out remaining. If you want to be a great defense, you have to deliver consistently. It doesn’t matter how many highlight reel plays you make if you can’t execute the small stuff. Just like we saw. [Applause] Nope. Just missed with that good fast ball inside, but it plants a seed in the hitter’s mind. He’s got to be ready for that pitch, which will open up the outside part of the plate. [Applause] Hit to right and that should do it. Pulls it in and that’s the ball game. After four wins in a row, you start to think a little bit that you’re on a roll. And that’s the momentum that just takes on a life of its own. Players start hitting up and down the lineup. Never know who’s going to come up with the big hit, who’s going to come out of the bullpen and get the big outs, but it’s a good feeling and you want to extend it. A 53 final score in this one for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB The Show. I’m John Shami. Thanks for joining us.
