MLB LIVE🔴 Cleveland Guardians vs Oakland Athletics – Jul 18, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
So, just about set now and starting in this one, Tanner Bbeby. Well, no doubt about it. He’s going to have to put together some consistently good performances in order to bring that erra down. Now, he’s got good stuff. He’s just got to be able to have confidence, trust it, and really go after hitters. Not nibble, trust that his stuff can have late life in Miss Barl’s bats. Now the A’s designated hitter, Lawrence Butler. [Applause] And that one is in for a strike at 95. And that’s how this game gets started. Just missed. up and in. Two and one and misses inside. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. That one misses. So a lead off walk. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. pretty much gifted in first base with a quick free pass. Jacob Wilson getting ready to hit. Come on, Tanner. Misses again. Five in a row. Now move to first. And he dives back in safely. Six straight outside the strike zone. Two balls, no strikes. And that misses as well. and ball four to a board. Two walks in the first has to be some cause for concern. I mean, you’re talking about a guy you want to pitch deep into in the ball game. It’s not going to help with the pitch count right there. They can’t afford to hand out free bases at this rate. So, digging in, Nick Curts, and that’s in there for strike one. [Applause] Butler at second. Wilson on first with nobody out. [Applause] and a swing and a miss. And that is a big first down. Got away with that curve ball. No doubt about it. It passed right through the heart of the strike zone and he just couldn’t get the bat on it. When you strike out on one like that, that’s when you start having conversations with yourself and they’re not usually very friendly. Brent Rooker will hit next. He’s sitting on 99 career homers. We’ll see if this is the moment to notch number 100. Rooker needs just one more homer to reach 100 in the big leagues. One out, runners at first and second. Yeah, and making it to a 100 homers would be quite the career accomplishment for him. Out of the more than 20,000 players to take an at bat in the majors, less than 5% have ever hit 100 dingers. Nope. outside. [Applause] Next offering misses. Now three and one. Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. And now the count filled up. Three and two. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Foul ball and it remains a full cow [Applause] and they’re all loaded up. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the wall. Very gritty. So, bases loaded with one away. Here’s the left fielder Tyler Sodstrom and fouled off. One out. Base is full. [Applause] can’t get him at first and the run comes in from third. Shay Langers. And now a chance for Shay Langelers. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season, so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. [Applause] Fought off foul. Here’s your one. That’s a ball. Way to lay off that pitch down. One- one now. There’s the swing. Well, there’s a certain point where you have to commit to what you think you see. And he guessed wrong right there. Nasty slider with just terrific bite at the end. Next pitch misses way outside. Well, Boo early on in this one having a hard time getting settled in. He’s not showing control to throw strikes and let alone to throw it where he wants in the strike zone. This could be a tough one for him. Just off the outside part of the plate. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Swing and a pop off in foul grab. He’s under it. makes the grab and they’re two down. And time now to check out the A’s lineup. They do a lot of things well in this offense, Singi. They control the strike zone. They make pitchers work hard for outs and as a result, one of the better OBP teams in the league. Well, what I love about it is it’s an organizational philosophy. Whether you go to instructional league, whether you go to spring training, you see these guys even during batting practice when it doesn’t matter. They’re practicing that type of approach. Boo. And when you have that filtering through the organization, even when you call off a player, he steps right in and continues with the pattern that they have established at this level, which ultimately leads to a lot of success. And that misses and the count is one and one. You know, you translate on base percentage, it’s basically this. Teams that have a high on base percentage, they don’t make outs at a very high rate. As my buddy Joe Sheen says, OBP is left. Misses inside. Two balls, two strikes [Applause] in the air, left field. Quan heads after it. And that’s the third out. So they get one but end up leaving the bases loaded. Bottom half of inning number one coming up. It’s the A’s one. Guardians coming up. Back here in Cleveland. And on the hill in this one, Jacob Lopez. Well, he’s been a real quality starter for his club. But coming into this one, what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year. It seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone. So, we’ll see how right-handers do against him in this one. Bottom of the first now, the left fielder, Steven Quan. He swings and misses at the first pitch. kicks and fires. Swinging a foul out of play. Let’s go. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. Jones. Now, here’s Nolan Jones. And the first pitch misses for ball one. One out. Base is empty. Let’s go. Yeah, big swing and a miss. One ball, two strikes. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. No, anytime you can punch out the top two guys in a lineup to start an inning, got to be feeling pretty good out there on the mound because when you think of just having a distraction, table setters on the base paths and all of a sudden you’re dealing with a number three hitter. Any distraction can cause you to serve up a cookie and that is that. Guardians go down one, two, three. They trail here one- nothing. Second inning, set to go. And now the rookie second baseman, Maxy. By back to work and takes low for ball one. Ball one, no strikes. Swings through that one out in front that time. One spin rates outstanding on that high fast ball. Really tough to hit. [Music] Misses inside. Two and one. Swing and a miss. There’s the change up. Here’s a swing and a drive left field and he knew it. His second home run of the series. It’s two nothing. He’s so good at getting his arms extended and that’s exactly what he did right there. You don’t typically want to pull a pitch in that part of the plate, but he doesn’t allow his wrist to roll over. Stays through the ball, gets the loft, and gets the home run. Denzel Clark up next for the A’s. Pitch is in there. It’s 0 and one. Always exciting to see a laid-off home run in an inning. kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. Clark getting the start in center. 24 years old and he was born in Canada. Next offering is in for a strike. Two pretty nasty sliders to get this hitter in an 02 count. You’re up there at the swing and blast one down the line. It’s gone if it’s fair, but it hooks foul. Well, good solid contact right there. just a bit out in front of that fast ball. Got to try to stay on that backside just a little bit longer and see if you can do some damage. [Applause] Out to short. Throw on to Santana and that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. Now betting the designated hitter, Lawrence Butler. And now Lawrence Butler. He walked and came around to score his first time up. [Applause] Oh, that’s just out. One down. Base is empty. Swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field. snags it for the second out. Now batting number five. Two out. Space is empty. Next up for the A’s, Jacob Wilson walked his first time. [Applause] Check swing and he went strike one. [Applause] swing and a miss as he was late that time. Two strike [Applause] and that’s a strike out. Looking went back to the slider and it was a good idea, but the solo shot stretches their lead even further and it’s two zip. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. bottom half of inning number two leading off Kyle Manardo. Kyle Manardo [Applause] That misses and that’s ball one and downstairs. [Applause] And that one wrapped foul. Swing and a miss. Man, he really sells the change up with that arm action. [Music] Next pitch is outside. outside and that is ball four and that’s their first base runner of the game. Very close off the outside corner. Could have easily been called a strike in that location. Fantastic. And now it’s the switch hitter, Carlos Santana. One of the rare guys at first base that you almost think defense first. He is that good with the glove. You’re talking about top of the list elite defensive first baseman. [Applause] And that one upstairs, ball one. First baseman are involved in just about every single play. So when you have somebody so solid over there, uh, you can breathe a little easier. Pop jumpy. One away. Batting six, second baseman, Daniel Schne. Daniel Schnean digs in for the Guardians. upstairs and it’s one and0. Let’s go Cleveland in the air left field down the line and it stays fair. Lead runner holds at third. So two runners in scoring position and just one out. [Applause] stepping up for the Guardians. An onel Martinez. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. Ball one. [Applause] on the corner for a strike. I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. Ball to looks like he thinks that should have been a strike at the top of the zone, but doesn’t seem to be too upset. That’s just a case where I think he’s trying to get a better feel for the umpire strike zone and what he’s going to be calling. That’s just a part of pitching. Skips in and excellent work to corral that one. Could have been dangerous. Menardo at third. Schne at second with one away. And that’ll load the bases. Oh, that sets up a really big at bat in this game. And these are the moments when everyone in the stadium gets really locked in. So bases all loaded up and now the veteran catcher Austin Hedges. Ball one, no strikes. All loaded up. Bottom half of inning number two. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing on the ground to third. Good feed. That’s one. And that’s two. Just trying to sneak one through with the bases loaded. But an excellent job by the defense to turn that one and get out of this jam. onto the third inning. And now the first baseman, Nick Curts, number 16. That one misses. One and0. You know, these athletics showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. They’ve worked three walks already, so that proves they’re not anxious up there. They’re sticking to their game plan and it’s working. Just missed. Two-1. Strike two. Two two now. Ripped in the air left field and a touchdown for a base hit. man aboard on the leadoff single. Now batting right. Now it’s the right fielder Brent Rooker possibly thinking about home run number 100 here. He’s just one shy of that milestone. And a weak ground ball to the left side. Quick feed to second for one. Plenty of time in first. That’s a double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. Tyler Soderstrom up next for the A’s and that drops in for a strike. Though Chris through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. That one outside. One and one. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. Two outs and misses. It’s a strikeout. Nothing doing there for the A’s, but they’re on top two nothing. Bottom of the inning. Here’s Brian Roio. The short stop. Brian Roio. The shorts stop takes the ball. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow right field. Rooker tracks it down for the out. Now batting left fielder Steven. So the Guardians lineup turns over. So in now for Cleveland. Steven Quan struck out on just three pitches last time. That’s outside and that is ball one. And that’s in there at the knees line to left center field and that’s going to fall for a hit. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Just so sound in his mechanics. Gets against a firm front side. And the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field. Nolan Jones digs in now that catches the corner. Quan the base runner at first with one out. And that one missing low. And that’s down and away. [Applause] That one fouled off. Man at first, one away. Let’s go Cleveland. And a foul ball. He stays alive. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Fouls it back with two strikes outside low and it’s three and two. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. And ball four, two aboard. [Applause] Up next for the Guardians, third base. First and second, one out. Here’s Jose Ramirez 0 for one so far singing. He’s a guy that covers both sides of the plate about as well as anyone in the sport. How difficult is that to do? Oh, just look at the back of my boat. swing in a liner. Base hit out into right center field and it gets by him. One runs in around third. He scores to tie it up. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch run scoring at back. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. Now the four-hole hitter for the Guardians, Kyle Manzardo. Swing and a tapper that rolls foul. Tied up here in the early going. Just off the inside edge. Tap foul at the plate [Applause] in the dirt. Swings and misses. Struck him out. So, two down now. And here is Carlos Santana. He’s 0 for one. Santana. [Applause] Ball one there. [Applause] on the ground to third and that chance handled in plenty of time to first and that’ll keep more runs from coming in. Inning over, but they’ll pick up a couple runs here. Both coming on this two-run double. And we’re deadlocked now at two apiece. Back after this on the show here in Cleveland. Out of the fourth, digging in. Shay Langalers. First pitch just misses in the air to left down the line. Quan in out number one on the grab. Good pitch. He just kind of had him out in front on that pitch away and wasn’t able to stay closed. Here’s Miguel and Duhar flying to left his first time. Pitch misses and that’s ball one. Counts one and0. Right through there for a strike. That clips the inside corner for a strike. All tied up. Top half of inning number four. On the ground right side. Throw on to Santana. Now two away. Now batting second base Maxy. Here’s the second baseman, Maxy. He’s already homerred in this game. That one missed. Next offering pop foul off to the right. out of play. The 1-1 swinging a foul pushed off to the right and that will get out of play. Two out space is empty. That one not close and that’s ball two. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. Two down. Nobody on. And it stays fair. Go ahead. Run on base. And here is Denzel Clark. Grounded out his first time. Late on that fast ball. When you’re taking your lead over there at first, you got to be very careful. This guy on the mountain’s got a good pickoff move. Let’s go Cleveland. Off the plate. Ball one. Downing ball here. Rolls. Foul. fouls it off. Still one and two. He’s mixing his pitches really well late on that fast ball after seeing the change up. See if he can elevate one. I think if he does, he’ll get the swing and miss. Cut on and lifted in the air. They stopped the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. Up next for the A’s, the designated. So the batting order turns over. Lawrence Butler up next for the A’s. That misses the zone and that’s ball one. Two on, two outs. Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. And a count one and two [Applause] upstairs. [Applause] A change up missing. Three and two now. Jacob Wilson in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Music] Three and two now. What a stop. And that’s a nice play to end the inning. A strand a couple score remains 2-2. [Applause] Back now at Progressive Field. Bottom of the fourth. Now it’s the second baseman, Daniel. [Music] First pitch doesn’t find the zone. You know, these Guardians doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. They’re doing a good job of working the pitch count. And they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well. Kurts takes it to the bag. One up, one down Martinez. Next to hit, Anel Martinez. He reached out to walk his first time. Let’s go. Still relatively early, but with a pair of runs already on the board, the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set him up to do more damage later in this game. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. No ball, two strikes. Base is empty, one away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. swings through that one. It’s a strike out. Just blown away in that at bat. Three fast balls, 12 strikes. He wasn’t even able to foul one off. There’s not much you can take away from an at bat like that as a hitter other than maybe there’s something wrong with your eyes. He’s got to have better timing on the fast ball next time. Pedes batting for the second time. And that’s strike one. [Music] Swing and a high-fly ball right field. Rooker makes the catch and that’ll do it. We’ll head to the fifth. Tied at two. Ready now for the fifth inning. Now here is Jacob Wilson. Number five. By back to work. That is upstairs for ball one. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Slade Sakone appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. Allard, a left-hander, also throwing. [Music] Fouled off. He was late. High in the air out to right. Jones on the move. One down. Now batting number 16. Next up for the A’s, Nick Curts. One for two. Let’s go Cleveland. Gets the outside corner with that one. And that is out of play. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch. Backed off the plate that time. [Music] And it remains two and two. Really great change of speeds. He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next. Just misses with that one [Music] outside and that is ball four. Gosh, another walk in this one. Man, he is having some real issues with control. Go ahead. Run on base. Rooker. The next to hit. He’s 0 for one. First pitch misses. Counts one and0. And they’re swinging to miss. I think he was sitting off speed though. Next offering is in for a strike. Probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. Curts over at first with one away. lifted in the air right center field and a base hit and they’ll have runners at the corners after a one out single high fast ball even a little above the zone but such a good job of staying tall on the backside getting that barrel there to meet it just in time I tell you what it’s not easy to do a chance now to take the lead and at this point in the game that could be a deciding on manager out of the dugout now and he will make a move to dip into the Guardians bullpen. Tanner Bby won’t go any further and he’s not going to be happy with himself. New pitcher on the mound in a moment. Now pitching Slade Sone will take over here. Still pretty early in the ball game. So this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs, kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. Here’s the left fielder, Tyler Soderstrom. We just might be talking about this at bat in our postgame rap. He’s proven he can drive in runs in these spots. That’s in there. And that’s strike one. swing and a miss. Good pitch right here. He’s going to try to make a pitch. It’s going to produce a strike out or a ground ball double play. and a swing and a miss. Huge strike out there. Certainly a strikeout situation right there. The infield playing back and this pitcher has to step up and get the swing and miss. Really nice job of attacking the hitter at the plate. Pretty big two out at bat coming up now. Shay Langalers up next for the A’s. Go for two in this one. And a swing and a miss there. Oh, and one. [Applause] Next one is off the plate. And now it’s even one and one. In for a strike. And now just one pitch away from surviving the inning. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Slider got him for strike three. Well, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. And welcome back to the ballpark. John Shami with my buddy Chris Singleton. It’s set to get us started. Bottom five, Ryan Rochio. Let’s go. [Music] Swing and a miss. Strike one. Rokio measures 5′ 10 in 24 years old and he was born in Venezuela. popped up. Muny hauls it in for the out. And there’s one away. Now batting left fielder Steven. And up next for Cleveland, Steven Quan. Chris, baseball today, so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers, but this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. Lined in the left center. Base hit. So, a man aboard now with one away. Up next for the Guardians. Stepping up for the Guardians, Nolan Jones. Singi, one of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swinging and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore. So when you see somebody who contacts the ball like this, do you think of that as plus value? Absolutely. If he’s doing damage now, if he’s rolling over and and grounding out, then it’s a different story. But yeah, if he can put the ball in the gaps or over the fence, 100%. Swings and misses and the count is 0 and two. And that’s in the dirt with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. gets under and pops it up. Mony brings it in. Two-way down. Now batting third baseman Jose Ramirez. Now it’s Jose Ramirez. Though he came out clutch earlier in this ball game and really just needs to take the same approach. Think hard right back up the middle. That’s outside and it’s one and0. Swing a highf fly ball deep left field. Going back. He brought it back. No runs, one hit, no errors, and a man left. Five innings complete. We are tied 2-2. Back here in Cleveland now the third baseman Miguel Anduhar swing and a line drive ripped out of the right center. That’s a base hit around first and hustling for second in safely with a leadoff double. Go ahead runs in scoring position. Waste no time there. That pretty much split the zone down the middle. And those are the ones where you got to make them pay. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Maxy up next for the A’s. He’s already homerred here in this one. and he swings and misses at the initial offering [Applause] with the go-ahead run standing at second and we’re in the top half of the sixth and that’s fouled off and two spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see Another [Applause] swing and a miss. Stripped him out. Oh, really expanded the zone right there with that fast ball off the outside corner. The play got him to chase it. That’s a tough one to lay off of because it starts close to you and just continues to run away from you in that batter’s box. So, it’s a really nice pitch with two strikes. So the go-ahead run in scoring position. Next up for the A’s, Denzel Clark. Third baseman playing on the edge of the grass looking for the sack bun. And that traps in for a strike. And Duhar leads off second with one gone in the inning. swing and a ball drilled in the air towards right center field. Brings it in. Out number two. Now here’s the lead off hitter for the A’s, Lawrence Butler. Lawrence Butler. [Applause] bottom of the zone and a cold strike. Runner at second. Two down. [Applause] And that one fouled off. Man at second. just misses there. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets [Applause] and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Two outs and one in scoring position. [Applause] headed towards the corner. Fair ball. Run comes in from second. It’s 32. Not in time. He’s got a double. A perfect example right there. That plate discipline. It pays off. The deeper he gets into account, the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle. So, runner at second, two down. Jacob Wilson now at the plate. Fly ball to right. And that’ll do it. A’s get one on the RBI double. It’s now a 32 ball game. Major League Baseball is on the show. Back now for the bottom of the sixth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, JP Sears. He doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers, so he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing work behind him. They’ll have to be on their toes with him on the bump. Fought off foul. [Applause] And that one misses up and in. And it’s one and one. Movement in the bullpen. JT Gin the hardthrowing righty is up and loosening. Beo the hardthrowing right-hander up as well. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. So, up next, Carlos Santana, the switch hitter, batting right, Santana. [Applause] And that one pulled foul and that’s in there for a strike and quickly nothing at two. A’s leading by a run [Music] and that’s off the inside edge and the count one and two. That’s a ball. Went with the sweeper. [Music] Pretty good pitch there to take a rip at. He wants to get his arms extended. He likes the ball away from him a little bit. Just not able to square it up. Breaking ball misses down and away. Gets a piece and stays alive. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. Let’s go. Got him. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. Well, this is exactly what you’re looking for from your bullpin arm when you roll him out there to start a new inning, hold on to a small lead. Just such a stabilizing effect to not only get the first two hitters, but to strike them out. That gives everyone on defense a big boost of confidence. So digging in Daniel Schneean and the first pitch misses for ball one. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom of the six. [Music] And another ball. [Applause] [Music] in the air right side. Rooker under it and that will end the inning. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Colobby Allard. He’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season. So, this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. Colby Allard. So, digging in, Nick. First base number 16. and the first offering a fast ball for a strike. Movement in the pen to the Guardians. Cade Smith, the young right-hander up and throwing. Gatis getting cranked up as well. All right, Cleveland. And a foul ball. waves at defender for the strike out. Well, classic pitch sequencing there to change eye levels for the punch out. That fast ball on the pitch before was off. was very competitive and that gets you thinking that he might try to climb the ladder. But then the curveball out of that same tunnel just falls off the table and he can’t make contact. Brent Rooker up next for the A’s. And that’s him for a strike. [Applause] Base is empty, one away here in the top half of inning number seven. And that’s a fair ball. Well, just a total nightmare for lefties. I’d be very surprised to see that matchup again. wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. There’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that. Man at first with one gone, Tyler Soderstroke up next for the A’s. That’s a strike. 01’s the count [Music] in the air out towards right center. Jones makes the catch. Two down. Now betting catcher Shay Langelers. Here’s the catcher, Shay Langalers. This is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively. Fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate. Good game caller, good at framing, but it’s that big arm that really stands out. [Music] Cleveland, that one finds the zone and that is strike two. Yeah. And because he’s got the big arm, he pays attention to the running game and is sure to manage it. Comes up empty as he chases that one in the dirt. Got him in and over on the strike out. One hit, one left. Seventh inning stretch time. It’s the A’s three and the Guardians two. [Music] [Applause] [Music] We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. JT Gin. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. [Applause] And that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play. Looking to get the tying run on base and ball one. I got a ball, one strike. And a count one and two. [Music] [Applause] Good eye in that spot. That’s a really good take. And that one’s a little bit low. Three and two now. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. Here comes the 3-2 swing and a miss. He struck him out. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. A big first out here in the seventh via the punch out. Yeah, it just does so much to change the outlook of an important inning like this when you got the leadoff hitter so critical in setting the table when you got a tight game like this. So, a strikeout really puts them on their heels. Austin Hedges now. That’s a strike and it’s 0 and one. Holding on to a one-run lead here in the bottom of the seventh. Next offering is in for a strike. He doesn’t seem to like to pitch up. Hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches. 02 count now. I think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out there. Got him looking coming out of the bullpen and throwing bees. So two down now and here is Brian Roio. and Roio. And that’s in for a strike. Going one. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. Two outs. Fans. Another. And that’s three straight strikeouts. Guardians fail to score and it’s still a 32 ball game. Now pitching. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Kane Smith. And one thing on him, he’s been really good this season at keeping the ball in the park. Not an easy guy to take deep. Here’s the third baseman, Miguel Anduhar. One for three and [Music] foul ball there. [Music] The one late that time. It’s strike two. It might be time to choke up a little bit. Get that front foot down early. Maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. Swing and a miss at the splitter and it’s a strike out. Well, take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty simple in terms of putting them away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. Next up for the A’s, Max Muny. He launched the solo shot back in the second inning of this one. Yeah, that was big for these guys early on. Definitely helped them get off onto the right foot. And that is downstairs. Ball one. Cleveland has some action going in their pen. Matt Festa preparing to come on if needed. And a 1-1. And that misses off the outside edge. pulls that one foul. And they’ll do it again. Swing and a ground ball out to short. Rochio sends it across to first. Two up, two down here in the top of the eighth. Up next for the A’s, center fielder Denzel Clark. So up next, Denzel Clark singing. You got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean, watching him track balls in the outfield, it is beautiful. That one the other way and a base hit. Now he turns and heads for second. The throw in in there safely. He quickly went from hitter to base runner. Love when guys make that transition and he’s got speed to put on a show. Lawrence Butler will hit next. Let’s go. Ground ball left side. Slings it across. That’s the third out. the A’s strand one and it remains a 3-2 ball game. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Shawn Nukem. He’s been so good against lefties. Number 31, Shawn Nukem. Here’s the Cleveland leadoff hitter, Steven Quan. left fielder Steven Quan. [Applause] First pitch doesn’t find the zone. The A’s bullpen has some movement. Fred Lane, the closer is getting loose. [Applause] It hard but foul off to the left. Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. One ball, two strikes. And he chases that one. One gone here. Pretty big strike out right there to start this eighth inning. Down one. Any lead off base runner really makes this inning a bit more interesting. But now this offense has to switch from possibly trying to manufacture a run to needing to run into something or just try to string multiple hits together to get a run across the plate. And now Nolan Jones swinging a ball head out towards left center field and he pulls up on it and that’s a hit. Well, that started and ended pretty quickly. No messing around right there. I don’t know how he’s able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it. That pitch was inside and he let it get really deep. So, pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it. Jose Ramirez digs in for the Guardians. Basketball for a strike. Trying to hold a one-run lead here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Close but called a ball and the count is one and one. Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. Rolled to short. Possible two ball offbalance feed. There’s one and that’s two. Got the batter to hit it exactly where he wanted that textbook 643 double play gets out of the jam and back in the dugout. here in Cleveland. And now the shorts stop. Jacob Wilson. Smith back to work. The shorts stop takes the ball. Movement in the pen for the Guardians. Matt Festa up and loosening in the pen. [Applause] inside and it’s two and 0. Oh, he never moved cuz he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. He’s been able to go inside as well as outside, effectively working both sides of the plate in this at bat. And that one fouled off [Applause] in the air left field down the line. Nobody can get there and it’s a foul ball. That one drilled left field. He’s got it going up. One down. Now batting number 16. Next up for the A’s, Nick Curts. [Applause] Just missed outside. And that one is lifted in the air. Martinez and makes the grab and there’s two down. Now batting right fielder Brent Rooker. Two down. Base is empty. Now a chance for Brent Rooker. Not looking like they’ll be adding any insurance runs heading into the bottom of the ninth. So, it’s going to be on the bullpen to hold this lead. First off, offering it just misses. One-run game here in the top of the ninth. That’s a ball. Tried the sweeper. [Applause] And that one is in for a strike. Good pitch. Oh, one strike. [Applause] That’s ball three. Three balls, one strike. [Applause] The right-hander gives up the two out walk. Oh, you know this guy wants to swing it, but he’s showing some good patience in this one. It’s the second time he’s taken ball four. Now, the left fielder, Tyler Soderstrom. Let’s go. That’s a little bit low. 10. Right through there for a strike. Smith throws over. Brooker back on a dive. Crowd locked in right now. One-run game here in the ninth. [Applause] Swing and a miss. And that one missed by a ton. Threw that fast right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. That misses the zone. And now two balls and two strikes. [Applause] and he swings and lifts one to deep center field. raging back towards the wall onto the track and he makes the catch. [Applause] Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Fred Lane. A chance at his first save of the year. Well, one-run game. Now it’s the DH Kyle Manardo. A walk and a pair of strikeouts. Oh, that got away from him. And he’s going to reach on a hit by pitch to lead off the inning. Substitution being made at first on the pinch run. Will Wilson. I think he kind of leaned into that one. No outs, runner at first. So in now for Cleveland, Carlos Santana 0 for three in this one. And there’s no doubt that they’ll feed off the energy from this crowd, right? I mean, yeah, I’d say the intensity level has gone up a few notches for sure. [Applause] That one’s in there. 0 and one. Just amazing to me how many closers and backend relievers just throw absolute gas these days. I never would have had a chance. Next offering upstairs. One ball, one strike [Applause] [Music] and downstairs. [Applause] cut on and miss. Good change up right there. Two and two. Try to keep the game alive here in the bottom of the ninth. [Applause] [Applause] One-run game. Bottom nine. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. [Applause] And a swing and a miss. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strike out. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. Well, that’s the effect of the splitter that you’re looking for on the mound. Really nice pitch right there and had him out in front over the top. I’m sure the batter was thinking he was getting something else. Perhaps a fast ball with a little more straight and velo to it. He’s two outs away. And now Daniel in the dirt blocked, but no advance. That’s ball one. [Applause] Just missed. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. headed towards the corner and that is a foul ball. Tying run at first, the winning run at the plate. Next off is down low. Just doesn’t seem to want to throw in the fast. Anel Martinez in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] 32 foul off the plate. They’ll do it again. [Applause] Fly ball down the line. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s two down. Maybe caught that one off the end just a little bit. Couldn’t quite barrel it up enough to really drive it. Anel Martinez. So they’re down to their final out. Anel Martinez digs in for the Guardians. Typically the outfield defense will play a little bit deeper just to keep the ball in front. Make sure that runner on first doesn’t come all the way around to score and tie this ball game up. Well, at least you got the pitcher thinking a little bit. You don’t want to run yourself out of the ball game. You get thrown out or picked off, it’s over. Lifted to left and this should do it. And that’ll do it. The A’s strand the tying run on base to win it. The ball for his first career save deserves to be on display at his house. I mean, it’s kind of like when a restaurant frames its first dollar bill somewhere on a wall. You just can’t forget your first save. A 32 final score in this one. The A’s are victorious. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show, I’m John Shami saying so long.
