MLB LIVE🔴 Arizona Diamondbacks vs St. Louis Cardinals – Jul 18, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

Almost ready to get underway. And on the mound here today, Zack Gallant. What should we keep an eye on here? Well, you can see his whip is a little above the league average. Not bad, but I think in this one he’s going to need to control that a little bit better. Try to limit hitters from getting on base. Stay in that windup instead of the stretch. And when he does allow base runners be able to throw a pitch, he’s going to get a swing and miss, get out of the inning so that a base hit doesn’t do more damage and put his team behind the eight-ball. Falloff foul. First pitch 640. Lined into left center and that should be extra bases around first heading for two. And it’s a double to start the game. He was all over that one. Just a great approach. Looked like that was exactly what he wanted to do with that pitch. And right off the bat, he knew he was taking that wide turn at first to head for second. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position. Mason win. Next up for the Cardinals, not getting the results he’s wanted at the plate recently under the Mendoza line so far this month. One of the things amazing with Zack, think about the players he’s been traded with and for in December of 17, he and Sandy Alcantra were dealt to Miami from the Cardinals for Marcel Ozuna. Then ultimately in July of 19, he went to Arizona for Jazz Chisum. Donovan leads off second with nobody out. That one off the bad part of the bat. Just a lazy fly ball. Pulls it in on the run. One away. Here’s the Cardinal lineup. Now Singy, this lineup has the benefit of playing behind a great pitching staff. They’ve got a really low ERA. Yeah. And you know, with that said, there’s not as much pressure on the offense, but make no mistake about it, players want to hit the ball hard and they want to score runs. They want to jog around the bases hitting the ball over the fence. So, regardless of how dominant the staff can be, the attitude is we want to go out there and have some fun with the bat. So, we’ll see. One big inning in this one, you know, could be all they need, but you’d like to have multiple big innings. And puts the squeeze on that one. And there’s two away. Back in fourth, right fielder Alec Burles. Now up the Cardinals number four hitter Alec Burlson. He’s someone that really beats up on right-handed pitching. The lefties, however, give him a little bit more trouble. And that one wrapped foul. Rightander kick steals. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Two outs and one in scoring position. [Applause] Next offering is down low and the count’s even at two. [Applause] [Music] spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another [Music] and he couldn’t hold back run up on strikes. No runs, one hit, a double, no errors, and one man left. And now Arizona gets its first opportunity in a scoreless ball game. Back here in the desert and on the hill, the big righty Eric Fetty and Singy. It’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that can keep a good tempo. Don’t give hitters time to adjust or think, they can get through a ball game and you look up, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. Catel Marte leading things off and takes a strike. Marte goes 6’1, 31 years old and he was born in the Dominican Republic and that is downstairs and the count is one and one. The 1-1 is fouled off. [Music] Fights that one away. Still one and two. Next offering is outside. Well, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than to have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. [Applause] And foul ball. Battling here as he fouls it away. Now he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit. Try to move it around. Create just a little bit of illusion at the end. [Music] That one misses. So a lead off walk. I don’t think he really wanted to pitch to him right there. Anyhow, this is Corbin Carroll. Corbin Carroll. And that one is downstairs. And that is ball one. Runner at first with no outs here. And that one in the air center field. One down. Batting third. Now the Diamondbacks line up as put together by Tory Lavell. This group was shut out their last game, so we’re going to see if they can bounce back with a better effort here today. And Boo, it can get in your head a little bit when you get shut out. You’re frustrated. You’re seeing that consecutive streak of innings you haven’t scored and you want to get off to a great start, score early because if you don’t, you feel like it could linger into two consecutive games, which no one wants to be a part of. Lordis Goreel Jr. in the box here lets that one go for a ball. Griel gets a piece. swings and misses. And the count one and two. Two straight. Goes down swinging for the strike out. That’s the first sweeper we’ve seen today. And the batter made a mess of it. Suarez. Aueno Suarez up to the plate now. And the first offering is not close. And that’s downstairs and outside. Two count. You really don’t want to give in here. You got to work the edges. Really execute a pitch. Hopefully, you can get back into this count. just missed. Marte off of first with two away. Next offering is in for a strike. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion. So something in the gap should definitely score. keeps the at bat going with a foul ball. So now two on and two outs. So here we go again with the walks. It’s been a real struggle finding the zone for him in the past. Now even if they get out of this jam, these walks add pressure and stress to the entire team. Here’s Josh Naylor and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. And that drops in for a strike. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. He’s going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. Two on, two outs. Rip to third. They take the force out and that is the inning. End of one and we’re still scoreless. Back here at Chase Field and here’s the catcher, Johelo. Gallon back to work. That one ripped. ranging back towards the wall, hits the fence, and that’s a leadoff double. Went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. Absolutely blasted that one into the gap, but just didn’t have quite enough to clear the wall out there. Maybe a little more elevation under it, and it carries over, but that’s a swing you’ll be happy with every time. Runner in scoring position now. and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. Here’s the left fielder, Lars Nbar. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. No score here in the second. fouled off. He was late. Line drive and this might be trouble. Headed for the plate. He’ll score easily. Always feels good when you come through and get your team on the board first. That was a thing of beauty. He may have been a little behind the pitch, but by getting that barrel into the hitting zone early on in his swing, he was able to meet it and still shoot a line drive down the line and left. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Thomas Sajay getting ready to hit. There’s the strike. All one’s the count. [Applause] The next offering misses one ball once stripped. James Kingsley, our played umpire. Consistent and maybe a little generous on the edges. Yeah, boo. He’ll give a little bit on the edges like you said, but from what I’ve seen, he usually does that when a pitcher is just commanding those parts of the strike zone. And essentially, they’ve earned it. The umpire rolls with him in the dirt. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. Runner at second. Nobody out. Next one just misses. And now it’s filled up. Three and two. And ball four, two aboard. Perfect. Well, they didn’t give him anything to hit. And now with the runners on first and second, they’ve set up a double play opportunity. So, not a terrible result. Here’s Nolan Gorman. Breaking ball in there for a strike. First and second here. No outs. Rolled softly, but that goes foul. [Applause] Breaking ball inside. Going to count one and two. That one missed. Recognize that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. Swing and a ball hammered left field. Guriel drop step going back. This one’s going to carry and it’s gone. An absolute smash to left and they throw three on the board. It’s 4 nothing. Already playing with the lead and now they’re celebrating a home run. They’re having a great time out there. Boo. I wasn’t sure he hit that one as hard as he needed to to get it out of here, but it had just enough behind it for the homer. What an attempt at the wall though. He really gave a terrific effort to try and bring that one back. Stepping in Victor Scott and a foul ball. Well, a really rough inning out there on the mound and uh this is one of those where you learn a lot about a guy’s toughness and his ability to turn the page and keep pressing forward. [Applause] Hey, two ball. Two strikes and that one missing low. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Swing of a miss. Struck him out. And that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. Oh, that was perfect execution of that curve ball down and in. He gets it out of the danger zone and you really can’t do it much better than that. It’s in the zone the entire way. So, you have to swing as a hitter, but then just falls off the table and almost hits you in the back foot. Donovan at the plate now. That’s ball one. counts. One and0 line drive and a foul ball. One down, base is empty. So a foul ball makes it one and two. [Applause] And that one upstairs. Still only one out here in the inning. Strike three and that’s two in a row. And stepping in is the speedy Mason win. [Applause] And first offering is fouled off. Two outs. The shorts stop takes a ball. [Music] Just missed. Back to back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So, I think the confidence level is raised right here. And that one is lifted in the air. Marte going after it. And that’ll do it. St. Louis gets three on the homer. It’s now a four nothing ball game. And welcome back to the ballpark. We head to the bottom of the second. Randle Britick now. Randick. For whatever reasons, this is a hitter that performs better in night games. We’ll see what he brings in this one. Bounced and that got the pitcher still able to get it there in time. So they get the first down of the inning. The comebacker got him down low and you can really see him favoring the leg. That’s his plant leg which might be a concern, Chris. Yeah, you hope he’s got some feeling in that leg so he can land on it like you said. But from the way he’s acting out there, I think it looks like he’s going to be okay and try to continue. Boo. Here is James McCann. Come on, let’s go. And ball one. One out. Base is empty. Pulls that one. Foul outside low. Two and one. That clips the corner. Two-2 the count. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. That misses and now three and two. [Applause] popped in the air left side. Poso settles under it and it’s caught for the owl. Betting eight center fielder. Alec Thomas. Alec Thomas now and that’s off the outside edge. And that’s ball one. And another ball. [Applause] And that’s downstairs and now three and 0. [Music] The right-hander gives up the two out walk. It’s tough after falling behind a hitter or two balls and no strikes, but now at least he gets a fresh start against a new batter. But he needs to get back into the strike zone and start pitching with conviction. [Applause] Heraldo Pomo stands in with two away as he takes a ball. Whoa, that’s down. Now move to first. Ow. They got him. And that will end the inning. Three up, three down for him. There we play two full. It’s the Cardinals four and the Diamondbacks nothing. And we’re back. All set for the start of the inning. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Wilson Contrus. The wind of the pitch outside’s back out here for the third and after the first couple of innings pretty rough. I think the skipper is looking for him to give him a little bit of length. See if he can save the bullpen some. Marte in plenty of time to first and one away in the top of the third. Now batting right fielder Alec Berles. Alec Burlson next up for the Cardinals. went down on strikes his first time through. There’s the strike. Probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. One down. Base is empty. Fouled off to the right. Foul ball still 0 and two. Ball one there. One ball, two strikes. The count [Music] foul ball still a one and two count. Comebacker to the mound over to first. First two batters retired here in the top of the third. Now batting catcher Joel Po. Two down, base is empty. Joho next up for the Cardinals. Doubled in his first AB. That one catches the zone. Go and one. Two out. Base is empty. Flying drive. And that’s a base hit out into center field. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. Two outs, runner at first. Lars Nbar. Next up for the Cardinals just missed. Poso off of first with two away. inside just missed. Looks like he’s being a little cautious with him in this at bat after doubling the first time up. Doesn’t want to make another mistake. Swanging a popup. Suarez nabs it and that’s the third out. The Cards leave one, but they’re in front four nothing. Back here in the desert, stepping in is the switch hitting shortstop. Peraldo Pomo Pomo fly ball to right. Burlson should have this one. One up, one down. Now batting second base. So the batting order turns over. Here’s Catel Marte. He reached out to walk his first time. And there’s a ball. [Music] Next offering is fouled back. That one hammered center field. Scott going back onto the track and he makes the catch. Thought that was a no doubter. I think the wind was holding that in this ballpark. Two outs. Space is empty. And now the DH Corbin Carroll flyed to center. His first time. He’s 0 for one outside with a breaking ball. [Music] Laser could be trouble. And that’s going to kick into the corner. And it gets by him. They’re still chasing it as he rounds second. Passes third. He wants it all. The relay throw. The tag. Safe. It’s 4-1. Well, they call it one of the most exciting plays in baseball for a reason. Boo. Always fun to see an inside the parker. And man, he was flying out of the box. And I think that by the time he was getting to second, he had it in his mind to go all the way. That’s just great hustle from start to finish. Oh yeah. All right. So two away with nobody on. Here’s Guriel. [Applause] Guriel gets a piece. [Applause] That clips a corner. Two strikes to a guy who’s already 0 for one with the punch out. The only guy in the lineup with that strike out. But you can’t get too relaxed. You still got to make good pitches to get him out. And one and two. Two down, base is empty, but one run across here in the last half of the third. And a good eye there. Really nice two-strike pitch right there. Very tempting, but couldn’t get the chase. [Applause] cuts and misses. It’s a strikeout. One hit in the inning, a solo homer. Three innings complete. It’s the Cardinals four and the Diamondbacks won. Back here at Chase Field, John Shy with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Thomas Sajay-Z. That one misses and it’s one and0. Well, he hasn’t quite settled in out there. four runs in three innings. He’s going to have to have some quick one, two, three innings to pitch deep into this ball game. At 96, that pitch is in for a strike. Ground ball left side, toss to Naylor, and one gone in the fourth as they get the leadoff man. Now batting second base Nolan Gorman. And up next for St. Louis, Nolan Gorman. He’s already homered in this game. [Applause] Gorman, 24 years old. He’s playing today in his home state of Arizona. And they’re at the knees and the count even at one. Bases empty, one away. Top half of inning number four. Well, he went inside a couple of times and now outside. Hitter’s not exactly sure where to look for this next pitch. fouls it off. Still one and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Well, I don’t think there’s a hitter alive that hasn’t at some point succumb to that pitch right there. It just looks like it’s in the zone the entire way. And then the top spin and gravity take over in the blink of an eye. And it’s just such a tough pitch to lay off of. Scott takes low. Second trip to the plate in this one. Swing and a miss. Strike one. I got a ball. One strike. And that one popped in the air left field. Guriel handles the chance. And welcome back to the ballpark. Down the third base, Au Heno Suarez. Hey, you Suarez right through there for a strike. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. That one missing inside. Well, these Diamondbacks doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. They’ve worked three walks already, so that proves they’re not anxious up there. They’re sticking to their game plan, and it’s working. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. Man at first, nobody out. And now it’s Josh Naylor. That one missed. [Applause] That one’s in there. And it’s one and one. Generally second, third time through the lineup, you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Looks like he’s doing a nice job of it. Nobody out. Runner at first. This one in the dirt. Grounder off the pitcher. Gets it there in time though. And they do get the out. Catcher coming out to check on him. It looked like it got him on his back leg. So, you’ll wonder if that might be a problem for him in terms of pushing off the rubber. Yeah, it’s a great point and we’ll have to see how he looks, but to me it appears he’s moving pretty well. I think it’s just going to sting for a while, but hopefully nothing more. Randall Gri stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Randall Richard. First pitch misses. [Music] Swing and a miss as he was late. One out, the runner at second. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Swinging a foul straight back. [Applause] Cut on and miss. Struck him out. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. James McCann in now. First time up was a pop out. [Applause] [Music] And they hold him at third. 90 ft away with two out. Man, those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever. Such a good feeling. That’s a good sound coming off the bag, man. And as he connected out front, lifted into the outfield. That’s one of those swings where you just don’t even feel the ball hit the barrel. That’s a pure stroke. Thomas stands in here, takes ball one low. Runners on first and third. Two away. And that’s in there for a strike. Okay, now it’s either one and one. [Applause] Swinging a foul out of play. Line drive, base hit right center field. In comes the runner from third. It’s an RBI single and it’s now a two-run game. Well done. narrows the deficit with the RBI there. Off the bat, it was headed for the gap all the way. And as a hitter, you love seeing those as you take your first couple of steps out of the box. You know you got some real estate to run on. It’s such a good feeling. Nice liner into the gap right there. First and second, two outs. Heraldo Pomo stands in now for the Diamondbacks. [Applause] And the sweeper is off the plate. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. [Applause] Two on, two outs. That one misses and now three and0 out there on the mound. He’s got to go right after this hitter because you don’t want to turn this lineup over. This is the guy that you’ve got to get that final out, get out of this inning. And that’ll load the bases. He’s been in a very giving mood today. Now battling. So bases all loaded up. Standing in is the power hitting second baseman, Catel Marte. [Applause] just missed. [Applause] McCann the runner at third. Thomas on second. Purdomo on first with two down. Gets the call. That’s strike two. One ball, two strikes. [Applause] All loaded up. Dangerous hitter at the plate. And down on strikes he goes. And that’ll keep more runs from coming in. Inning over. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. And we’re back. New inning getting started. Here’s the Cardinal DH. Brendan Donovan. Gallon back to work. There’s the strike. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. John Curtis up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. Woodford also throwing. Next offering upstairs. I got one ball, one strike. And that one sliced foul. That one just missing inside. Two balls, two strikes. Let’s get it going. Center field Thomas makes the play and there’s one down. Now batting shortstop Mason win. So up next, Mason Win for two in this one. And there’s the strike and a foul ball. Waves at the bender for the strike out. Chris third time through the order and a couple of quick outs for the starter. Yeah, he’s been very frugal today. economical with the pitch count. Two down, base is empty. Here’s Contrarus now. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Ball one, no strikes. Just two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the fifth. And that’s hammered into right field. That’s a base hit. [Music] So a man aboard, Alec Burlson will hit next. First offering misses badly for ball one. Two outs. That clips the inside corner for a strike. [Music] Next one misses. Two and two. Stays alive. Swing and a miss. Adam had him out in front for the strike out. So, one left for the Cardinals, but they still lead this one four-2. Back here in the desert, bottom of the inning now. It’s the DH Corbin Carroll. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Movement in the bullpen. Sunny Gray up and throwing. Palante a hardthrowing right-hander up as well. [Music] And that’s in there for a strike. Okay, now it’s even little chopper rolls foul. [Music] One, two now, gets a piece and stays alive. Oh, that got away from him. And he’s going to reach on a hit by pitch to lead off the inning. Here’s Lordis Guriel Jr. 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Guriel Jr. check swing and he went. That’s strike one. The count. Throw over to first and he dives back in safely. Carol aboard here at first with nobody out. Really close pitch down around the knees there. And you could see him asking where it missed. Probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. The kick and the pitch. Runner goes strike in there. And that’s a stolen base. Not even close. Knocks that one away and will do it again. Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit [Music] and down on strikes. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. Well, he’s going to have some thinking to do when he leaves the ballpark after this one. That was his third strike out and this one looking obviously. So he’s been a little overmatched. He’s got to find a way just to be more competitive up there at the plate. Suarez in the box now. Takes strike one. Getting a little frustrated with the strike zone. [Music] They had a swing and a miss there. 02 the count. And the pitch is outside. Ball one. So runner in scoring position. And now the tying run comes to the plate. Last half of inning number five. On the ground to third to Jay-Z. Tosses to first. Got him. Josh Naylor for the Diamondbacks. First baseman Josh Naylor and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter [Applause] just off the inside edge. Runner at second. Two down inside. And that’s ball two. That’s in there. Fouls that off to the left and we’ll do it again. fights it off. He’ll see another really laboring here in the fifth. Next pitch is going to be number 100. Man, you got to think this is probably his last inning if he can get through this thing. That misses and it’s three and two. Randall Gritic in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. Goes down looking. No runs on no hits. No errors and one left on. Five innings complete. It’s the Cardinals four and the Diamondbacks two. We’re back and they make a change to start the six. The new pitcher Jake Woodford just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. And now the catcher comes up to him. Joel Po. And that one is downstairs. And that’s ball one. Activity in the bullpen. John Curtis getting loose out there. The 1-1 is fouled off on the ground right side. Naylor takes it to the bag. Leadoff man retired in the six. Now batting left fielder Lars Nukebar. Now up for St. Louis Lars Nbar. just missed. Come on. [Music] Come on back. Come on. You can do it. That one in the dirt. Two and one. That’s down and in. Inside. Ball four. Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. One down. Here’s the third baseman Thomas Sajay-Z. He’s 0 for one in the dirt. [Music] rips that one center field. Puts it away for the out. Two away. Not fooled at all right there. He was clearly all over it. But sometimes you hit it too hard and right at someone. You’re looking for one of those bloop hits to get a knock sometimes. Now batting. Now it’s the second base, Nolan Gorman. And he had a big swing of the bat early on of the ball game. Yep. A three-run rocket back in the second. Even though it was early, a big homer like that can be tough to come back from when you’re on the other end of that thing. I mean, it’s tough. Sets up an uphill battle the rest of the way. [Music] Ball one there. Woo! Let’s go back. That one pushed to the left and fouled. Outside low and a count. Two and one and strike two. This guy’s got such a good sinker as a hitter. Got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. Still two and two after the foul ball. Good job to fight that one off. Nukebar the runner at first with two gone. that misses the zone. Full count, three and two. So now two on and two outs. Not what he wanted to do right there, Boo. That keeps this inning alive. Puts a runner in scoring position and a chance for this offense to add on to their lead. First and second, two outs. And now Victor Scott. First pitch, not close. Maybe losing command a little bit after the walk. Next pitch, not even close. First and second, two down and we’re the top half of the sixth. Just missed. Two walks in the inning already and he just doesn’t seem comfortable out there. Like he can find the right mechanics and then repeat them. And another ball. Brendan Donovan up next for the Cardinals. Two aboard, two outs. Fast for a strike. And they’re all loaded up. You get a walk and you get a walk. Everyone gets a walk. Back to the leadoff spot in the St. Louis lineup. Brendan Donovan. Next up for the Cardinals. One for three. [Applause] Close one. Doesn’t get the call. Ball one. Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. Base is loaded. Two down. on the ground of first. Naylor, he takes it on his own out to escape a bases loaded jam unscathed. So they strand three and leave them loaded. 678 two in the bottom of the sixth. It’s the Cardinals four and the Diamondbacks two. [Applause] Back now for the bottom of the sixth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Sunny Gray. And this is an important part of this game. Tight score and still a lot of outs to get. So they’re looking for a big outing out of him right here to get some critical outs. Leading off. And now the right fielder Randall Gri. Right fielder Randic. Foul ball there. Here comes the 01 move into the bullpen for the Cardinals. Riley O’Brien, the hardthrowing righty, is up and loosening. Romero, the power lefty up as well. That one is absolutely bel first and hustling for second and he greets the new arm from the bullpen with a double. Really nice job with two strike hitting in that at bat. He got a pitch he could get to out front. Kept his bat through the ball and didn’t pull off or roll his hands over and that allowed him to rip that ball down the line for the double. Runner in scoring position. No outs. James McCann the next to hit. One for two. Just missed. [Applause] With the tying run at the plate here in the bottom of the six. [Applause] Next pitch is outside. Appears they’re working around him with the base open. Singing. Well, you know, these two old counts, Boo, they’re just not what they used to be. And we sound like old guys when I say that, but ultimately this is a strategic game, and you expect to see this type of approach by the pitcher in this situation. [Applause] Man, at second, and McCann fouls it off. now pitching for Andre Palante is forced to the mound after the injury. Andre pretty big spot he’s coming into trying to strand that runner at second base so he’s going to need to make some quality pitches. He does have first open if he needs to use it. No outs. Runner on second [Applause] and it remains two and two. [Applause] Next offering popped in the air right field makes the catch and there’s one gone. Now Betty the center fielder Alec Thomas. Alec Thomas stands in now for the Diamondbacks. A walk and he’s also singled. [Applause] right through there for a strike. And I know you want to be patient as a hitter, but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight. And he got one right there, but left the bat on his shoulder. One out and a runner at second. Oh, that fast ball drilled him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. So digging in. Heraldo Pomo definitely wants to stay out of the double play here. Ball on the ground in the infield. Should be an inning ending double play. Ball one, no strikes. Got the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning ending double play. Boo [Applause] going inside gets out of the way. Last two pitches have been down in the zone. pitcher clearly trying to get that ground ball double play, but in this count, he’s going to have to give in, elevate his pitches, and get back into this at bat inside. Just missed. He’s great hitting the ball the other way. And that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. Catel Marte in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. And there’s the automatic. One out. Runners at first and second. And that one fouled off and a foul ball. He stays alive. [Applause] Foul ball. And it remains a full cow. [Applause] And a swing and a miss. Down on strikes. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strike out. You can’t be mad at yourself after an like that one. Marte up to the plate. Marte. That one at the knees for a strike. going at bat can be a little bit of a dance. Strike one here, but few more pitches. We’ll see how it turns out. [Music] This one in the air to Jay-Z drops into the glove and the inning is over. Diamondback strand of pair still down by a count of four to two. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, John Curtis. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. And now here is Mason Win for three in this one. And there’s a foul ball. Curtis, a 65 righty, 220 lbs. He joined the team as a free agent. Ground ball up the middle, dives, but it kicks off his glove. No throw. And the speedy runner is on at first. Now batting first baseman Wilson. Wilson Contreras now up to the plate. First pitch misses 10. Fast ball for a strike. Not even close there. And it’s two and one. Looking good. That one the other way. And there’s a base hit. Lead runner to second. It’s a two on and nobody out. Well, that was one of those high percentage advantage counts where batting averages are just so much higher. Just a really nice approach to shoot that line drive to the opposite field. There’s a lot of hard work and discipline that goes into getting a result like that at the plate. Doesn’t come naturally for most hitters. Alec Burlson next up for the Cardinals. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out and a good fast to start him off. That’s strike one. One’s the count. Here we go. In the air right field pretty well struck that one carrying and that’s up onto the walkway and out of here. He leaves the yard to right. It’s 72. Two pitches, two swings. that one for a home run. Looking to be aggressive all the way and it paid off for him in a big way. Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate, but he was ready to turn on the inside fast ball. So direct to the pitch. Absolutely blasted out of this ballpark. Now the Diamondbacks manager is out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. John Curtis done for the night. And as he heads off, we’ll step aside for a minute. Back with a new pitcher after this break. Now pitching. So out of the pound for the Diamondbacks, Kevin Gle. Well, they need someone to stop the bleed and keep the score right where it is. Seems like a tough task today with the way this lineup is swinging. Now here is Johel Poso. [Applause] And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. [Applause] swing and a ground ball out to short. Whips it to first. Finally gets the first out here on the grounder. Up next for the Cardinals, left fielder Lars Nukebar. Lars Nbar. Next up for the Cardinals. In there at the knees. [Applause] Swing and a miss. 0 and two. No ball. Two strikes. [Applause] Rip to right. Base hit in. Everything came together for him. He got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point. Pretty impressive for an 02 count. Thomas Sajayzy next up for the Cardinals. Popped up. Marte going after it. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. Out number two. Up next for the Cardinals, second baseman Nolan Gorman. Nolan Gorman next up for the Cardinals. He’s already homerred here in this one [Applause] and he pumps it a strike. Well, he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there. Couldn’t pull the trigger and perhaps the best pitch he’ll see in this at bat to hit. Just missed. I got a ball, one strike. [Applause] Swinging a miss and a count one and two. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Swings and misses. Struck him out. But the biggest swing of the inning comes right here. A three-run homer. It’s now a 72 ball game. Major League Baseball is on the show and welcome back to the ballpark. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. Now the number two hitter Corbin Carroll had the first offering a fast ball for a strike. That’s a little bit low. And that one fouled off. Swinging a miss. Struck him out. Went back to the sinker and it was successful. Now batting and it’s Lordis Goreel Jr. 0 for three with three strikeouts. [Music] Fast ball in for a strike and it’s 0 and one. Base is empty, one away here. The bottom of the seventh. Griel gets a piece. And a ground ball to first and he handles it himself for the out. Up next for the Diamondbacks, third baseman, Auaneo Suarez. Audio Suarez up to hit now. Right through there for a strike. There it was. Oh, here it is. Hit it. He gets a take. Gets ahead in the count. And a swing and a miss. There’s that slider. Well, you got the hitter already chasing that nasty slider. If you’re on the mound, you just want to expand the zone right now. get a swing and miss and get through this and back the one two and downstairs. Great job of laying off those pitches down in the zone to even the count up at two and two. Such a better feeling for the hitter. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. That one is hammered right field. Pops over the wall. That’s an automatic double. Well, there’s something really nice about getting yourself an automatic double like that. You get to stroll into second base without having to worry about a throw or getting your uniform dirty. And now you’re just looking for the next hitter to kind of do the same thing. Maybe put one in the gap so you can jog home as well. Now up next for Arizona, Josh Naylor and it’s fouled away. Suarez at second with two down. Next offering is fouled back. ball. That pitch is up. Pretty standard high 02 fast ball right there. If you’re smart, you’ll look for something down in the zone, but not too far. Don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. Two balls, two strikes to count with two outs. [Music] Gets a piece there. will do it again. Man on second, two down. And that’s a base hit. Coming home. Here’s the throw to the plate and he’s out. Touchdown and that ends the inning. Well, it’s pretty difficult to throw a base runner out at the plate with two outs on a base hit to the outfield, but an excellent job of coming up with it, getting rid of it quickly, and throwing on the money. That is great technique from start to finish. Nice job to end the inning. [Applause] Back here at Chase Field leading off Victor Scott Ginkle back to work. There’s the strike. [Applause] Liner snagged it first. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. I know it didn’t produce a hit, but he made solid contact. And that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. And here’s the St. Louis leadoff man Brendan Donovan one for four with a double and that is out of play. Next pitch is downstairs. One and one. And there’s a ball [Music] and now two and two. Bell and those hitters count sometimes can be a little too aggressive and a good pitcher will play off of that. He’s got to get a better pitch to hit. Highfly ball out to center field. Perdomo sizing this one up. Hauls it in for the out. Two down. That’s a really nice play. Ranging back into the outboard for that catch. We all know those can be a little tricky, especially if the wind’s swirling around out there. Two out, space is empty. Now here is Mason Win. Let’s get it going. the other way and foul ball. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Way out front for strike two. Wow. No fair right there. I mean, that slider didn’t move till the very last moment. Incredibly difficult to pick that up. Just kind of have to tip your cap on that pitch. Heading down the line. Gritic on the run and he can’t quite get there. It’s a foul ball. Really great change of speeds. He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next. I would say the game’s close right now, but it’s not out of reach either. I mean, these guys really need to put up a zero on the board just to maintain a little hope. And they’ll do it again. [Music] Swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit and that extends the inning. Now batting first baseman Wilson Contraras. And up to hit is Wilson Contras. Close but called a ball. One and0. [Music] Two outs. That one’s in there. And one and one. and misses inside. [Music] Three balls, one strike, and ball four to a board. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about. fielder Alec Berles. First and second, two outs. Alec Burlson next up for the Cardinals. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And that’s ball one. And now a little barking back towards the umpire. Clearly thought he got that outside corner on what was a pretty big pitch. Sometimes that only makes it worse for you moving forward, but it can also open up that location in the future if the umpire thinks there’s a chance that he missed it. Right through there for a strike. Fouled off left side. Two outs. Couple of base runners at first and second. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Two on, two outs. That one missed. And that’s off the inside edge. And it’s three and two. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. So the Cards strand a couple, but they’re still on top seven to two. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Phil M coming on to face a righty here. And he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. Now it’s the right fielder Randle Gri right fielder Rand. And that one upstairs. Ball one. And he hits a ground ball right side. And that’s just fouled. Right side. [Music] Burlson makes the grab. One down. Up next for the Diamondbacks, catcher James man. James McCann stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Diamond swing and a miss. And that strike, he’s a bullpen arm that keeps the ball in the ballpark, but obviously out of the bullpen, you’re looking to limit home runs. Yeah. And that’s why he’s such a high leverage arm. Just doesn’t matter for him. He looks at attacking his own and attacking hitters regardless of the situation. One ball, one strike, the 1-1. And that one pulled foul. The Redbirds leading by five here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Liner base hit. Let’s go. Here’s the center fielder, Alec Thomas. And that’s through there for a strike. 01’s the count. They say, no balls, two strikes. McCann, the runner at first with one gone in the inning. down and in. Moved his feet. drilled in the air high and deep right field. Going back, squeezes it. Runner tagging from first. The throw into second. Outstanding catch right there. And I love the commitment that he showed. He knew that the wall was close, but was determined to make that catch. And a nice calculation of just how much room he had to try to minimize that contact. [Applause] Tap foul at the plate. That misses and the count even one and one. One and one. The 1-1 is fouled off. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another. And the sweeper misses. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. Battling here as he fouls it away. Taps softly third base side. A swinging bunt. Tosses to first. Inning over. One left for Arizona. They’re down five. It’s seven to2. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth. And there’s a new pitcher on the mound, number 43. And with a big deficit on the scoreboard, he almost has to just put that out of his mind. Every outing matters for relievers in their numbers. But I think it’s tough to get up for this type of appearance the same way you would for one in a close game. [Applause] Poso the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one. Action in the pen down there. A right-hander is up and throwing. [Applause] Swing and a highf fly ball out towards right field. Gritic makes the grab and there’s one down. Now batting left fieldielder now at the plate. [Applause] First pitch doesn’t find the zone. [Applause] That one pushed foul out of play off to the left. Base is empty. One away here in the top of the ninth [Applause] on the ground and it goes just fouled. [Applause] the one two got him looking and he didn’t like the call. Got a little bit of a questionable call on that fast ball right there. It appeared to miss off the outside just a little bit according to the electronic strike zone, but that’s the type of location where you kind of have to understand that it’s close enough to where you don’t want to put the fate of your bat in the hands of the umpire. He did and he got burned. And here is Thomas Sajay-Z and that’s in there for strike one. [Applause] Two down. Nobody on. And that misses. And now it’s even. One and one. [Applause] That one clubbed out towards left center. That’ll be extra bases. Makes the turn and heads for second and he’s in with a standup double. Everything came together perfectly for him right there. Nice line drive to the pull side. Met it out front but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield. So runner at second, two down. Here’s the second baseman, Nolan Gorman. [Applause] And that’s doubted away. [Applause] Hammered down the right side, but foul. [Music] [Applause] Hot shot to first base and he snags it to end the inning. back now as they hand the ball to a fresh arm to start the bottom of the ninth. John King. And you know, bullpin guys can struggle sometimes when they’re called upon with big leads because it just doesn’t have the same intensity as a tight game. So, we’ll see how sharp he is. Your mental toughness matters in situations like this as well. Marte in now. Takes ball one off the plate. [Applause] He swings and fouls one off. [Applause] Up and in. Two balls in a strike. If you’re going to miss, you want to miss outside the zone. When you miss inside the zone, it’s trouble. Swing and a ball ripped out towards right center field. That’ll touch down for a hit around first. Heading for two. And he’s there with a leadoff double. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. He got a pitch he could drive, but he didn’t get too excited like a lot of guys do and pull off the baseball. Really good timing all the way through the swing and the barrel was so on playing with the ball. Easy drive into the gap for that double. Next is the designated hitter, Corbin Carroll. That one outside. Ball one. [Applause] And a base hit into right stop sign goes up at third. Runners at the corners. Nobody out. Left fielder Lordis Guriel. Now the left fielder Lordis Goreel Jr. 0 for four with three strikeouts and he’s grounded out. Swing and a base hit. In comes the run from third to trim the lead. It’s an RBI single. It’s seven to three. Here comes a manager out of the Cardinals dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. John King won’t go any further tonight. And the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Now pitching for Brian Helley comes out trying to close it out. I think closer has to be one of the toughest jobs in baseball and we see a pretty high turnover rate because of it. Every outing seems to be high pressure. This one included. We’ll see if he can wrap up the win and get himself a save. Now that and next will be the cleanup hitter Suarez. Suarez. Get on base here and keep building off this momentum. They’re getting closer, but they still got some work to do. [Applause] And the first offering is not close. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. [Applause] [Applause] And that’s off the inside edge. And it’s two and one. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. [Applause] Just missed. It’s a tough pitch, but in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat, that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up to one. That’s the one. When he elevates, guys aren’t touched. Carol, the lead runner out at second. Guriel at first with no outs. Hard grounder into the outfield for a nine. Carol around third. He’ll score. Runner stops at third and they’re at the corners with nobody out. Four hits in a row and they’re really swinging it here. Just a simple ground ball the other way. They’ve had eyes on it. Man, sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. Now that sets up a huge at bat in this ball game. Josh Naylor stands in now for the Diamondbacks. And that one fouled off. [Applause] Little bit high and the count is one and one. This is a situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended. What you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up that’s in on your hands. That’ll pop you up in the infield and that’s exactly what the pitcher wants. The tying run at the plate. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. Glorel scores. It’s an RBI single and they cut the lead to two. Oh, that bat had a lot riding on it. Certainly a pivotal swing of the bat in this ball game. really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. He didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. Really important that coming up now digging in Randall Gen. First pitch and he just misses. This is the guy they turn to to get the most important outs of the ball game. But they’re going to make him work to get this save. [Applause] And that drops in for a strike. I got a ball. One strike. [Applause] on the ground. Right side down the line and it’s foul. [Applause] Next offering misses. Now two and two. Way to lay off that pitch down. [Applause] in the dirt. Runners hold tight, but it’s a full count now. Try to keep the game alive here in the bottom of the ninth. [Applause] Fouled off again and it remains three and two. [Music] [Applause] can’t connect on the curve ball struck him out. Oh, that’s a curve ball that people like to describe as a hammer for Uncle Charlie. And you can see why. It’s not a looping slow curve. He throws it hard and it gets plenty of bite on the end. Here’s the catcher, James McCann. [Applause] Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. Head and it will play. Here comes the throw. It’s offline and he scores and they trail by one. Such great concentration. Everybody on their feet knowing that you can come through with a good swing. And there he doesn’t try to do too much. [Applause] with the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth. And now the center fielder Alec Thomas [Applause] just missed. big spot tying and winning runs aboard with one down there. The home team trying to pull it out. [Applause] Tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. Pretty good pitch to take a pass at and a one count. Just not able to square it up. Straighten him up a little bit. [Applause] Very high with that one. And now three and one. Heraldo Pomo in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] four. He walked in and that’ll keep the line moving. Oh, that sets up a really big bat in this game. These are the moments when everyone in the stadium gets really locked in. Here comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Ryan Hellley departs and he leaves with the bases loaded. So he’ll look for some help from his teammate coming in behind him. Now pitching for on the mound now Jojo Romero. And we all know about his slider. It’s just jumpy, man. And one of the better ones in the game, I’d say. Spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a ton. Substitution now at first base. Entering is the pinch runner, Jake McCarthy. Jake Ronaldo Purdomo stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Golden opportunity right here. Well, if he gets the save here, he’s going to have earned it. Just getting through this hitter is going to be a challenge enough and he takes one right on the black and one. Tough situation right here. So important as a pitcher to get ahead in the count as he did right there. Winning run stands at second and fouled off. [Applause] That missed by a lot. Now one and two [Applause] on the ground to third. Makes a sliding stop. Not in time. He’s safe. Big back coming up for Catel Marte. Outfield playing pretty shallow. rolled softly, but that goes foul. This guy’s got good power with one swing. He could win it for him. Fought off foul. He’s gone off speed. He needs to elevate here with two strikes out of the zone. That’s off the inside corner and the count is one and two. Action in the St. Lewis bullpen. Kyle Ley up and loosening in the pen. O’Brien getting cranked up as well. [Applause] Foul ball still a one and two count. I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. brings it in. That’s out number two. Oh, that’s a frustrating at bat right there. A big opportunity and just missed it. I know he wanted to do some damage. Next guy will have to pick him up. Now Corbin Carroll to the dish for a big at bat. First pitch just misses. Winning run at third. Two down. [Applause] Highfly ball and that one curling foul down the right side. [Music] Trying to send this extra innings and that is out of play. [Applause] flying drive and that’s a base hit into center field. The winning run crosses the plate and the Diamondbacks walk it off. Eight-7 [Applause] scoring one run in the ninth is pretty difficult because the quality of arms and the focus on every single pit. But to score four runs for the win, an incredible comeback. This showed us a lot. Nice win for this team today. [Applause] And a final 8-7 for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB The Show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon. What the move?
