Lugo is fine on paper but comes with a $15m poison pill, as he controls a player option in 2026 that I am certain the Cubs would not want triggered. If he remains healthy, than it shouldn’t be an issue! Lugo will turn it down and hit FA, surely. But one bad pitch, one blown elbow, and the Cubs have a $15m anchor on the books for 2026, which they won’t want.
Any Lugo trade, therefore, would either:
1. Need a guarantee he wouldn’t trigger it
2. Come very cheap, as that poison pill could be nasty
It was just a finger issue too…it doesn’t appear he has ever had other injury issues? Important note
depends. what’s the trade?
I’d much rather make a deal for Lugo as opposed to Alcantara.
My dream is a combo deal with Arizona for Suarez and Kelly, but that would be a real pricey deal, and AZ (if they even sell) may wanna split their big pieces up to get more from teams
Triantos/Long?
What about Royal’s Michael Wacha instead?
He’s the luckiest pitcher in baseball, and a horrible get unless he comes in basically for free. He’s absolutely not worth a top prospect
Idk what the Royals will want that the Cubs have though. Outfield maybe? Bullpen? Maybe a second baseman.
Their issue really, is their hitting coach isn’t elevating guys. That team can’t hit for shit this year.
Lugo would be pretty great. Probably having the best or one of the best seasons among starting pitchers considered available. Would also still be under contract for 2026 I believe. I’d love to get Lugo. Could potentially be the only move and work if they don’t sure up third base via trade (I think they will get a SP and 3B)
Are we ok trading Cassie in whatever deal(s) we make?
We need at least one starter and a relief and we look good. Might have to trade some body…..Happ or Hoerner, maybe Shaw. One of the three or two of the three.
