BREAKING NEWS: TE Noah Fant released by the Seattle Seahawks

All right, everybody. We’ve got some Seattle Seahawks breaking news this afternoon. It is some news that I think a lot of people were expecting. I think some people were hoping that maybe we could do a little bit more here, maybe get some value, maybe find a way to squeeze out even like a late day three pick out of this, but it didn’t happen. So, the Seattle Seahawks have just decided to move on and say that the salary cap savings here are going to be be the uh the reward of the day. The Seahawks have released tight end Noah Fant as of about 20 minutes ago. A bunch of people reported it and this move saves a lot of money. This move saves nearly $9 million against the salary cap and that’s what we’re going to get out of it. There will be no draft pick. We’re not trading him for a pick or a conditional pick. We’re not even getting a compensatory pick because remember, in order to get a compensatory pick, the player has to have their contract expire. They can’t be released before their contract is up. So, there will be no compensation here. This is just a move to clear up a little bit of a roster log jam and save almost $9 million against the cap for 2025. Now, I’m not going to get too much into the fact that this had to be a release. It I think had been fairly obvious to the rest of the league that we were going to have to release Noah. There wasn’t a big desire out there to acquire somebody like a Noah anyway. trading him was always going to be difficult under those circumstances. I was hoping for like a conditional sixth round pick. Couldn’t even manage that. And at the end of the day, the money is more important than a late day three pick. I I’m going to say I I’ll say this about Noant. I I know that this news is going to be met with mostly apathy. probably some people are going to be I I don’t know about happy, but they’re going to be they’re going to be good with this because Noah Fant was not an overly well-liked player in Seattle. People didn’t think very much of him and he certainly isn’t a great tight end and he never was a great tight end for the Seahawks. I I take a little bit of a different stance on his overall uh tenure here in Seattle. I thought that he was a pretty decent tight end. He was a capable number one tight end. There were problems. Sure, he never produced at a really high level. He was not necessarily what we were hoping we were going to get when we traded for him a couple years. Well, when we when he was added into the Russell Wilson trade, but you take a look at his production over the last three years, it is pretty reasonable given the circumstances he was in. Remember this Seattle offense, a lot of stud wide receivers. He was in Seattle offenses that were mostly built around guys like DK Metaf, Tyler Lockett, and most recently JSN. I I know that those first two years in Seattle, Seattle did do a lot of heavy tight end sets. They did a lot of two tight end and even some three tight end sets. But even that is not necessarily giving Noah Fant a an abundance of opportunities because he’s one of three tight ends that is getting significant snaps. So even though the tight ends as a body are doing well, the individual tight end is not going to put up monster numbers. So, I look at this and I think to myself, okay, 400 to 500 yards a season gave you 130 catches over three years. That’s really not that bad. He He wasn’t a good blocker, but he also had very good hands. He dropped very few passes when he was here. I think he had like two drops last year. He He might have had no drops in the previous two years. His catch rate was pretty good. 130 out of 170. Like, I I don’t think this was a bad player. at all. I don’t think that this was even really that much of a disappointment because I didn’t consider him to be a big part of the Russell Wilson trade. He was probably the biggest part of the three players we got in that trade, but that trade was always about the the uh draft picks. And he only missed three games as well. There’s something to be said for that. He he did battle through injury for a decent chunk of his Seattle career, but he consistently took the field. the injuries probably interfered with his ability at least a little bit to um produce at a higher level. But at the same time, I think the main thing with his uh Seattle career that held him back was just the fact that this was more of a this was an offense not really built to shovel a bunch of production at TE1. it it it it was just never going to happen, especially with the talent the team had at wide receiver. Okay, so nevertheless, this is clearly the correct move in my mind. I’m not here to say that this is a bad release. I don’t think it’s a bad release at all. This team needs to move on. No offant clearly not part of the plan in 2026 or beyond. So why not just move on now? you spent a second round pick on Elijah Royo who can do theoretically most of the stuff if not all of the stuff that Noah Fant can do or if not right now then he will right that that’s certainly the plan AJ Barner played well enough last year to earn significant snaps and while I know that Kubak likes to go tight end heavy I don’t think you need Noah Fant and Elijah Royo you can have somebody like Saw as your tight end three or you can go get a different tight end three from somewhere where else you you don’t need to have no aant, especially when it’s going to be 8.9 million saved and you’re only going to be paying him about 4.5 million. You’re going to be paying him about 4.5 dead, which is not nothing, but you can see how significant the savings are versus what you spend. You’re saving basically $2 for every dollar you’re paying him versus what you would have had to pay him if he was on the team. there’s no way he was going to produce enough to justify that kind of money. Now, this does kind of lead to a separate question. Where does that leave the Seattle Seahawks in terms of salary cap stuff? Well, let’s go to Sprak here. Now, this page is not yet updated for the Noah Fant stuff. So when they say top 51 cap space and it’s at 27.5 million approximately that’s not including the 9 million we just saved on releasing Fant. So we are at like 36.5 million approximately in top 51 cap space. Now we carry 53 players and there’s the practice squad and you always want to have the injury buffer. So when you when you actually do the calculations, it it’s probably going to be somewhere around 30 million in cap space, which is a lot. It’s more than enough to do basically anything you want to do. If you want to do it, if you want to trade for Micah Parsons and extend him, you can. If you want to trade for Trey Hendrickson and extend him, you can. You can do these things with that kind of space effectively working with 30 million. There’s really no limitations. The only limitation is do you want to be doing those things with this team? And that’s something we may not be able to answer in the affirmative until we get later into the season. Plenty of cap space. That that is not a concern here. And you can also see that in terms of 2025 cap hits, Noah Fant was our second biggest cap hit. He’s now gone and we’re just giving him the four and a half. That means we have three players on a cap hit more than 10 million. A big cat, Darnold, Nosu. And by the way, like you get down a little bit below that, you’ll start seeing some of these rookie contracts. We have rookie contract guys making some of the bigger cap hits on the team. Guys like Devin Witherspoon, Charles Cross, Reek Woolen. Now Reek Will’s getting bonuses because of how much he’s produced in his career so far, but it it’s still notable how at least costefficient this team is right now in terms of cap hits. Now, I will say this, this dead cap situation just got a little bit worse. We now are carrying over $70 million in dead cap for this year, which I mean, that doesn’t look good. That doesn’t look good. That is still something holding us back. All right, Noant is gone. Let me know what you guys think. I will see you guys later.

Not a bad player but the right thing to do.

  1. Good choice John, we now have close to 40 mill in cap space and even more next year sign all our players and go grab a guard in the next offseason alongside a LB and where set to make a run to the Lombardi

  2. I assume then that Arroyo is a 100% if this is the case, because one of the knocks against him was his injury history, but I'm still surprised by this move

  3. Thank the football gods. Fant has had more than enough opportunities. I was hoping this was going to happen last year. Parkinson and Dissly were much better than Fant!

  4. Creates room for pups like Kallerup and Lang. Kallerup bills as a tough in-line option, dirty work type of TE. I was curious as to how they would find a spot for either of them.

  5. Feels like we've been sitting on so much cap space and I'm not exactly sure what we do with it. I agree with the move in principle but we need to presumably follow it up with something else? Hendrickson? A massive load-up for 2026? I don't know.

  6. Fant is an above average TE but was never used correctly in Seattle, so letting him go and saving money makes sense.
For some strange reason, the seahawks don't have a good history using the TE position in any of their offenses.

  7. Dumb move, we dont need cap space we have plenty, there is no super guard or NT out there to spend on, hes a good receiving TE, and he only had this year left on his deal
I know brenden and others have had a hard on for this to happen, but whats the real upside?

  8. Eh, not really liking us hanging out hopes on two unproven TEs, especially with Darnold as our QB. People acting like our rookie is a sure thing when no rookie is.

I'm going to be incredibly annoyed if we did this for no reason and do nothing with that money. We always get excited as a fanbase when John clears up money, and then they do nothing with it.
