Well good thing his new coach is known for playing an uptempo game focused on controlled zone entries… oh wait
Not really, it boils down to “I don’t want to work hard to get the puck back and would rather run the risk of a turnover at the blue than chip and chase because it’s hard.”
Dump and chase hockey win the Stanley cup for the last 2 years.
Dump and Chase can be stupid but it really depends on the system you are playing against and the quality of the D of the opponent. If you have good skating strong D that run a neutral zone trap or similar style that tries to stop the play at the line, controlled entry is not always possible. Lane Hutson, who excels at OZ entry had to adjust his strategy at certain points just because it’s not always viable.
Hockey is entertainment to me. Dump and chase is the antithesis of entertainment IMO. It’s like mindlessly pulling a slot machine over and over.
It depends on the situation. Dump and chase does work in more grindy tight checking games while the carry in with possession is generally better in the modern game. It depends on the opponent and the game situation.
I’d say top 2 lines should try to carry the puck while bottom 2 lines should consider dumping it in and getting the puck deep, but as with everything it varies moment by moment
