Cubs Royals preview for this week. A ton of notes from just this first three games out of the All-Star break as the Cubs take two out of three from the Red Sox over the weekend. 4-1 win Friday, 6 win Saturday, 6-1 loss Sunday. Cubs are now 59 and 40 and entering Sunday had the best record in all of baseball and they will enter Monday with at least the best record in the National League. Sam, Sunday got away from them, but a nice series win out of the break. Yeah, it’s it’s got to be at least the third, fourth time this year where we’ve had a Sunday show where the weekend goes really well, but unfortunately they lose on Sunday and it just spoils the mood of the program a little bit. I mean, uh, if you were to ask me before the weekend, give or take, Cubs take two out of three, not only would I take it, I’d be very happy with it. And so, you know, that’s that’s the direction I’m going to go. Um, you know, for for for reasons that’ll be named or unnamed, it doesn’t feel as good as it should be because of certain other teams uh uh in baseball. But, you know, uh especially some teams that spend like billions of dollars and still are putting out mediocre products. But anyway, um I thought it was a really good weekend for the Cubs, man. I thought, you know, when you when you go game by game, you know, I keep I keep hearing like on Saturday night it was a national televised game and it was and the open and the open rightfully so. You’re going to talk about the offense. I get it. You know, rightfully so. But the Cubs won two out of three. You know, this weekend they they scored what 11 runs the whole weekend, something like that. It wasn’t a great offensive showing. The starting pitching was fantastic. And that’s why they that’s why they won this series. Uh uh Cade Cade on Sunday was pretty good. Walked a few too many guys, but did his job. show I just thought was the star of the weekend. Um he he looked himself again uh the the last two starts against New York and Boston, he’s just been spectacular. And then Colin Ray continues uh uh to hold it down there and probably right now is is maybe third in line right now if if if the playoffs were to start tomorrow to get a start, but would you had him have him ahead of Horton? Uh I don’t know. Uh yeah, probably. But um you’d start game three hoarding game four or something like that. Yeah. But but I thought that was the real real big story and then and then more of the same, you know, offensively with certain guys hitting and and and they did their job, but Sunday was a little bit frustrating. So yeah, definitely more on on Ray and Horton later. I Sam is is probably the top story from the weekend. I think you’re from an individual standpoint, although uh it’ll be fun to talk about Sean PCA this show as well. Absolutely. Imanaga last two starts, 14 innings, seven hits, one run, two walks, 11 strikeouts. And here is the most encouraging part that I believe you also added uh that that you uh inferred in a in a text message to myself on Saturday evening. On Saturday, Shota got a season high 15 whiffs. Mhm. And topped out at 93 MPH, which was also a season high. And for him to to dice up the Red Sox, who uh coming into this weekend were winners of 10 in a row, uh although many many stages of of this weekend, they they underwhelmed me. But like you said, I think it was not necessarily, oh, the their lineup was just all of a sudden light or or or um you know, it was it was fluky those last 10 games necessarily. I think the pitching staff, especially the starters, especially Ray and Emmanaga were just lights out. And again, do they need another starter? Yes, you can make a you can make a case actually very easily. They need us two. They need two. One who could pitch game three or game four of the NLDS and a person that could help out, you know, if Tyion comes back slower, if Assad never comes back, to to monitor mileage on Horton and so on. Um but but for Imanaga to do that, you you get you get dreams of him and Boyd really anchoring your team from a pitching standpoint as as temperatures cool. Once once Steel went down for the year. Yeah. And how many starts did he make? Three. I think he made four. Gosh. um once he went down for the year and you knew and and this is before you knew that it was going to be a sellers market. This is no because because up until about two weeks ago I thought the Cubs were going to go get like the biggest arm available but there just isn’t that many which I’ll talk about a little bit tomorrow. you kind of needed Shotaa to be great and what happened was is that Boyd actually was great and then Shota got hurt and now having Shota come back and look like this I think is the biggest story uh from the weekend because if you aren’t able to go get a Sha/boy caliber pitcher and you go out and you get like a Tyion caliber when he’s going pretty good you have to have Shota be a top of the rotation arm And and people might say, you know, hey Sam, what are you talking about? He’s been great all year. Look at his RA. There was a patch there. He had a couple starts before his injury, a couple post that he got good results, but he wasn’t the guy that he was last year. And now that is looking very much like a an exception to the rule, which is big news because Saturday night was the one night that was really good hitting conditions and he looked great. So So yeah, big big story there. And um you know, I I agree. I’m excited to talk a little bit about Shaw. I thought that was a pretty interesting I I’m surprised he was even uh he he started, let alone had a good series. Well, some of some of my feeling entering the weekend was surprised that he was even on the team. That’s that’s what I’m saying. 100%. And and he was great defensively again this weekend. And for him to go four for seven and hit that homer on Saturday, but really was about the the the totality of the at bats. Yes, got the results. Four for seven looks great on in the box score and on paper, right? But but I I I don’t know if I attribute it to rest. I know he told reporters that Saturday night. Hey, just four days off helped me, which really was more if you include the Yankee series, right? Uh but but really nice to see from him. Really nice to see from him. And I’m not ready to go to oh, so what does this mean? Oh, do they need to trade this? But I I’ll say this, my reaction, especially when he hit that home run Saturday night, was just happy for him because, okay, you know, we do this show every day. Think about what he’s going through every day, you know, or or anybody in that situation that’s been able to hit at every level and he can’t hit and and and it and it’s, you know, oh, the Cub’s got to trade for a guy and, you know, he gets pulled mid game and he’s getting benched every other day. It’s it’s a very and I know people say, “Well, that’s what he gets paid to do.” But it’s it’s challenging mentally, especially at a young age like that. And he’s he’s really kept a positive attitude. And you could tell he’s trying. It’s not like he’s doing the same things. He’s changed his approach a little bit. A lot of changes. So, for him to have some success there and it wasn’t just a home run, he had a couple other really good swings was was really nice to see. And I’m excited um to watch him again, especially if he could hit lefties, that would be huge. And he’s going to get another opportunity Monday. So, I thought that was a big story as well. But my my reaction isn’t like, hey, so so so do we not go after Suarez who just hit two more home runs. He has almost 40 homers. He, you know, he has about eight homers this weekend. Um, but but my reaction was just kind of in the short term just happy for Shaw. You see some positive feedback. Maybe they can get get you going a little bit. Well, if he could chip away at his improvement, that is a big story. and potentially if they could build assets for a pitcher maybe we’re not even talking about that would be that would be pretty important. Uh and someone else can overpay for Suarez potentially if the Diamondbacks even sell. Uh I am curious Sam, you’ll be solo Monday, I’ll be solo Tuesday to hear your updated thoughts on the trade market. Is there someone you know you would trade Casey for? Is there someone you really want in the next 10 11 days for them to acquire via via uh starting pitching acquisition? So, a lot a lot on tap uh for this week. And we’re going to keep talking about this series from the weekend right after this. Today’s episode is brought to you by Supply House. Sam, I wanted to ask you first about the lineup shuffle playing dividends. The Cubs are five and two since changing the lineup and uh or is that right? No, I think they’re five and one. Five and one. Five and one. Uh namely removing Ian Hap from the leadoff spot. Hap 6 for 18. Her seven for 23. I wanted to ask if if if you like this new look lineup in the Bush leads Saturday night with a lead off homer. Yeah, I do think it’s encouraging, you know, five out of your last six. Well, I I think it looks really good against righties. Um I still don’t I I I still think verse lefties and Grant Crochet is a phenomenal pitcher. Um very good. I I still I I just I don’t mean any disrespect to him because he’s been amazing. I I just don’t think Carson Kelly hitting cleanup verse lefties is something that I would love in a postseason game against Jesus Lazardo, you know, let’s let’s just say sure. But but verse righties, I I think this team’s really dangerous. And yeah, it makes sense, right? You have your your your four best hitters uh hit first and does. I thought Ian had a decent weekend. I I actually thought his swing looked looked more authoritative and better righty this weekend that than lefty. this lefty. It just feels a little loopy and slow to me. And you know, you look at the data, it’s hard to see because I can’t look at the data just recently. It’s it’s over the course of the year. But I thought he looked I I thought he looked fine. I think that’s a good spot for him. I thought Dansby had a pretty good weekend again. He had a couple balls Dansby did Friday that should have left the yard that didn’t. And Ian hit one really well to left center on Sunday off Crochet that got um crushed down by the wind. So yeah, I thought, you know, I I I thought it looked good. I mean, there wasn’t anything negative that stood out to me offensively, but the fact that they only scored 11 runs, a lot of that’s because Saturday was all solo homers. Um, and they just couldn’t get they couldn’t get the big hit with runners in scoring position. If you want to be really nitpicky, you know, on Sunday, you just wish some you just wish those fall to Nico and and it’s harder for them to fall when he’s hitting lead off, but you know, because he looked really comfortable against Crochet. But, you know, overall, I’m good with it. Yeah, me too. Me too. And uh I’m going to do more homework this week on possible non Suarez additions for the Cubs. He might have just hit another one. But I’m hopeful that their lineup against lefties, even internally, can start to solidify even just by changing up the order a little bit. You know, Miguel Amaya against lefties. What does that look like when he returns and Kelly doesn’t have to hit cleanup anymore because he’s not even playing that day? Um, so who would hit clean up though? Who would hit clean up verse lefties if Kelly’s not there? Is it Swanson? Well, it shouldn’t be, right? Who should it be? I think it should be Nicoer, but uh Well, I think it should be Bush or PCA. Got it. Yeah. Well, PCA is starting to really show some life for his lefties. I think it should be PCA. he should just back clean up the rest of the year. He homered on Saturday versus a lefty and then two doubles versus arguably, you know, the nastiest lefty in the business right now. And he doubled twice. I mean, so that’s my answer then. I think it should be PCA cleanup. And I think that’s the right answer. Um, couple more couple more weekend things just real quick. And I know it’s unfair. It really is cuz he didn’t play the first two games and Crochet is really good, but Justin Turner’s got to start delivering soon, Matt. or or there might be some sort of Trey Mancini post deadline situation. I know. Are you sure? He played third base Sunday for the last couple innings. No, I’m not. I don’t think they’re going to cut him. I don’t think they’re going to. But I’m just saying like, you know, like he he came up, I think, twice with a couple guys on and it’s like you’re just thinking to yourself, this is why you’re on the team. I need you to get a right a base hit to right center field here to justify this. And it’s just it just hasn’t been enough. You know what I mean? Yes. Yeah. From that from that point of view, he just uh he never really got it going. He hasn’t gotten it going the whole year. No. And it’s hard. It’s hard and he has a long leash because of the human elements. And it’s hard to get it going when you don’t play consistently because he’s never been just a strict platoon guy. But I just I want him to contribute a little bit. Like I just thought Sunday was a really good spot for him to say, “Hey, that’s why Justin Turner’s on this team. Great pitcher at Garrick Crochet. Good bat to ball skills in Turner. find a way to get a clutch hit and he just he wasn’t particularly close. I did want to give uh Caleb Theelbar’s line since May 5th, please. He’s only allowed four runs in 24 and 2/3, only four walks to 24 strikeouts. Well, Caleb Williams is in trouble. He is. That’s funny because when my dad was over Friday for the game, he mentioned how you said he might be the best Caleb in town. Well, if if this if he ends up the season with a an ERA under two as as the main left-hander in this pen and this team wins 96 games and and the and the Bears start out three and three. I’m just saying. I’m just saying. Justin Steel made only a few starts. Showed him miss seven weeks. Assad hasn’t been around. Tyone is now currently out to mid to late August. for for Ray to have a 380 erra in 20 games is is stepping up 100%. That’s that’s that’s what stepping up is in sports, what he is doing. And he’s only allowed three runs his last three times out uh which is which is tremendous there. And uh Cade Horton only four runs all in the same start his last three outings. Uh so really good to see from them. And do you see at least I mean at least till the deadline Horton will be in the rotation? Yeah, I’d like to see them play out the string with him and and not worry about mileage for till maybe a month from now. Well, you know, I said it on the short yesterday that the story of the Cubs season has really been three things. It’s okay. It’s been unsung heroes starting pitching, the main main four plus dudes offensively that have carried the load and then a a bullpen that’s been pretty good out of nowhere outside of Sunday. And right, Sunday they struggled, but they’ve been they had a tremendous resurgence most of the year and that’s it. And and the unsung hero starting pitching stuff is is Boyd, it’s Ray, it’s a little bit of Cade and then you know Sha’s gotten going lately. So yeah, I mean that that that’s been the story. I just I I would love for them to solidify it a little bit. Could I ask you a question? I know I know I didn’t really answer yours. Uh Ray’s been awesome. Um I I don’t know what else you could say about him. It’s exactly what you said. That’s what he was here to do and he’s delivered and he stepped up. Go ahead, please. Where just where is your confidence level right now? Cubs Brewers in August. Cubs are playing Milwaukee. It’s a one-run game in the seventh. Top play them next week. Yeah. Yeah. But I’m talking even later. Top top of the order coming up and Ryan Presley’s in the game. Where’s your confidence level there? 33%. Okay. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. They there’s definitely more names before him. Yeah. Which makes me feel good. Yeah. Uh Palencia Keller Theo Bar Pomerance. Right. So that makes Brazier. Maybe Brazier’s only allowed like one run the last month and a half. So maybe ah yeah okay u so yeah my confidence meter is is lower but also had confidence in the other four or five guys before him. Got it. And councel like he did especially Friday next week I I think he’s going to test out some some playoff bullpen strategy against his former team. Yeah. Right. Right. They’re calling that a statement series. They’re advertising it as that on their broadcast. Good for them. So, since the start of the Yankees series, Sam, before we get to Cubs Royals, Kyle Tucker is four for 21. Your thoughts on him? Yeah, exactly. Exactly what I was saying before the All-Star break or go or during the All-Star break. Uh he he needs to and he got out finally hit a home run Saturday. He needs he needs to hit for more power. He’s hitting the ball on the ground too much and he he needs to hit the ball um with more authority uh than the way he’s been hitting. It’s okay to say that. Uh, you know, one of the reasons you go out and trade for a guy like Kyle Tucker is because he’s so consistent and steady and you avoid a terrible, terrible month and right now he is actually not avoiding that. He is having a really rough month of July and so it would be nice for him to heat up. You know, I I thought he kind of snapped out of it with that homer on Saturday, but Sunday’s game again, you’re facing a really tough customer. Uh, but I thought that double play he grounded into when Nico got on the air when the Cubs were down a run that just kind of summarized where he’s at. just first pitch, weak ground ball. Got to hit the ball uh with authority and in the air. Um you know, when when you’re that type of slugger. Cubs Royals preview and Jed Hoyer previewed his own trade deadline. We talk about both of those things right after this. This episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Summer sports are in full swing. Open the FanDuel app today or visit fanuel.com to get started. Cubs Royals this week. The Royals are 48 and funny. They lost two out of three to the Marlins this weekend, but they did salvage the series on Sunday. So, that’s good. If you uh you know, if you subscribe to my my theory, no, you could say it. And let’s be honest, it’s been a flawed theory this year. Okay. uh 7:05 the next two days 120 Wednesday TBD and Noah Cameron Matthew Boyd and TBD Colin Ray and Seth Lugo Ben Brown is likely going to start Monday according to the athletic 45year-old Rich Hill could start Tuesday for KC Sam the Cubs got to win this series big time man hey you know what we’ve been doing the show a long time you could say it according to Sam’s flawed theory uh Cleveland Cleveland came in here, they’d lost seven in a row. They left, they lost 10 in a row. Uh but but it did kind of hold up with the Red Sox a little bit anyway. Uh yeah, I don’t like the fact the Cubs probably have to face two lefties here. I I you know, I mean, Rich Hill, but maybe they could break out of their funk this week. Yeah. I mean, they they did a good job against Freed that Saturday, but I got to tell you, Matt, I think it’s because he had a blister. Yeah, he was it was bothering him the basically the whole start. The whole game, he just didn’t look right. I don’t want to take anything away from our club as the Dodgers take a lead. Oh, you’re you’re tracking that free lead. Bottom five. Who had a homer? Was it Was it a Sturi Ruiz? It was. Yeah. Was it really? Yeah. Oh, I didn’t I just figured Okay. I just saw him hit like like 30 minutes ago. That was I was Oh, that’s what I get for making fun of the fact that he was playing. Okay. Noah Cameron having a fantastic year for the Royals. Yeah. No, really good pitcher. So really good pitcher having a really good year. If you take away he had one bad start against the Dodgers I think he had one bad start against the Yanks. Every other start has been quite sublime. Uh so it’s going to be challenging and Ben Brown pitching which you broke that news to me I don’t like this morning. Um right that’s from the Athletic. How do you feel about that? Hopefully he shoves but I I’m surprised that he’s coming up this soon. Well they don’t have anybody else. Well, they would they would pitch Chris Flexon, right? Right. So, they’re going with the larger upside with Brown who showed flashes, but he’s also just been brutal at times. Yeah. Uh, so hopefully maybe they win, you know, a high scoring contest. I can’t believe that was Ruiz. I was literally joking. Um, I I think it’ll be a short leash, right? Like if he if he comes out of the gates and and he should only face 18 guys anyway. Yeah. Yeah. And then and then you have Flex and ready to be the bull guy and then you feel pretty confident Tuesday that Boyd should be able to take you deep in the game. So that should be the game plan. But yeah, man, I got to tell you, you know, and a lot of this is just based on circumstance. I I’d love two out of three would be really nice, but I’d love I we talked about I’d love to start stacking wins and I’d love to sweep this team. I I really would. They’re they’re not very good. They’re they’re they’re pretty offensively uh u you know minimized, challenged, you know, they’re not a very good offensive team. And so, you know, you hold Whit in check. Um, you know, Pasquantino can hit a little bit. Um, they have Kagleó who’s gotten off to a really, really slow start. Um, you know, I’ I’d love to take all three possible. Absolutely. Absolutely. Of course, of course. And uh I think the most winnable game is is uh you know even if it is going to be against Rich Hill. Respect to him for still pitching. But you really feel good about the Tuesday contest with Boyd who will lead off the Brewer series next week uh by them keeping him pitching that the fifth spot in the rotation out of the Braves. I think the Cubs will put up a big number against Seth Lugo. Really? I his peripheral numbers aren’t that good. If that’s the case, then they’re going to win the series and maybe they will if they win Monday, maybe they will sweep. I think Monday is the toughest matchup. It It seems that way, doesn’t it? Yeah. Uh I I agree. Uh Cubs president of baseball ops Jed Hoyer spoke with the assembled media on Friday at Wrigley, addressing the state of the team, but mostly fielding questions about the trade deadline, which is next week, folks, on Thursday the 31st. Wow. Um, I’m starting to hear hints from Jed about, you know, the the most obvious path might not be the right one. Uh, he also just seems very comfortable. You know, is this a man who knows he’s returning next year? Um, Ken Rosenthal said on the Fox broadcast Saturday, you know, what what who are the truly impactful players available? and and that’s something we’re gonna have to address throughout this week. But my takeaway from Friday from Hoyer was when asked about trading from the Cubs prospect capital, he said there are no untouchables. Now, what needs to be addressed now or later? Are there players on the market in which you would deem there’s no untouchables? Maybe not. Yeah, but I I at least like that he said that the theme that I took away from the weekend from Jed, from Rosenthal, more other people was just the the sellers market, the competition. It’s just it’s, you know, and a lot of people were saying, well, hey, I wish they did more before the season started. And I just go, that that’s not Jed. That that’s Tom. Jed Jed wanted Bregman. Jed wanted Bregman. They they they made an offer. They weren’t even close. Uh uh Jed, they came close to trading for Lazardo. tried um they wanted Tanner Scott. That hasn’t gone well, by the way. Um good point. You know, so sometimes you wait for the deadline and and and this is what you get. And it’s it’s frustrating. It’s frustrating that this is this is shaping up to be one of the biggest seller markets I could remember in a year where the Cubs are in a massive clearly buyers. clearly buyers and and and and that’s and that’s frustrating because the customer with glaring needs. Yeah, they are buyers with glaring needs and so it’s going to be challenging. Jed used the word and you just mentioned it I want to say over over two three times creative creative. So what does that mean? Who does he put in a trade? Um how does that work? or anybody from the big league roster that he puts in a trade or or you know if you’re a team like Arizona that kind of wants to sell but kind of wants to have a Tiger type run, maybe you make a trade for a trade and it’s it’s actually a big league guy but this helps your need and that helps one of theirs. I don’t know. Um but but it’s going to be fascinating. We you and I need to sit down and have a discussion how we’re going to be covering that. We’re going to mean we’re going to have to be monitoring everything that week. It’s going to be, you know, you think the offseason rumor mill is hot. Monday through Thursday, not this week, but the following week is going to be, you know, something of the likes that you and I haven’t seen before. Wow. Yeah. Monday through Thursday next week is going to be a uh could be a really fun time. Uh I am discouraged by the Diamondbacks play here. Basically on the verge of sweeping the Cardinals. Well, the Cardinals look like they’re kind of checked out. Yeah, I think the Cardinals are out. uh you know, I mean, they’re basically done for the year. Giants aren’t playing well, right? Uh uh New York not playing well. Yep. Phillies, too, right? Or my Phillies lost two of three to the Angels. Dodgers. Two two or three to the Brewers. Don’t get me started on the Dodgers. Don’t even say that. Don’t even go there. Don’t even state their team name. Yes, that their effort. And I I will uh I’ll save that for a separate time. Sam will be back after the game tomorrow. I will be uh back after the game on Tuesday. Then a lot of trade uh things throughout the week. Uh and and uh hopefully you could uh join us for all all of these shows this week and beyond. Uh maybe we’ll get a surprise or two along the way from Jed Hoyer’s front office and company as well. This is Locked On Cubs, part of the Locked On podcast network. My confidence is even lower!! against the Brewers, I would only use him if the Cubs have a 2 or 3 or more, run lead!!😲🤔
You seem to be overlooking the big story.. The scary guys from the north are calling from inside the house 😮
Counsell announced Assad and Amaya are coming back in the Arizona series
A strong series would be winning all three games, and not having the bullpen come apart. The team had a 6.5 gam lead and blew it. We'll see if Ricketts really wants it within two weeks. Bet the under on 3.5 players added as the park is full and that's what the Ricketts are all about.
Let's go Brewers! Can't wait for the 8 upcoming games this next month with The Miz dominating 2 of those vs. the Chubbies!
Cubs are doing well but unfortunately it’s not enough as the Brewers are playing unbelievable baseball right now… Swept the dodgers both at home and on the road… If it ends today, it sucks if one of these teams will end of to the wildcard despite being the top 2 best records both mlb and NL
I heard announcers say Tucker will end up with a half "billion" dollar contract! SERIOUSLY???? Why?? I don't get it. I have never seen the star player a lot of people label him.
Brewers suck. Because they always blow in the playoffs. Stand pat. They have just as much chance as a wild card.
I predicted after the twins series that by the all-star break, the Brewers would be in first place. Okay, so I was off by a week.
Brasier is starting tomorrow
This is going down to the wire and I love it. Go Cubs
Question: When was the Last time the Cubs were 20 games over .500?
Brewers and cubs tied for the best record in the national league. I don’t know how you get a more exciting race
Failing to complete a sweep where you start the game 6 scoreless. You need to capitalize and close teams out when Milwaukee is on your heels. You don’t have room for error to just casually brush your shoulder off after imploding in a close out situation.
The fact that the Cubs 3rd best starter is someone the Brewers let walk is hilarious
when are we gonna say bye to Turner and Brujan what a joke we have on the bench again! fly the W again starting Monday nite thanks guys
Brendan is driving across the country to fill in for tomorrow. He can stay for an hour but then he has to drive back.
News flash! Small market Brewers have the same record! Cubs can’t beat left handed pitching!
Brewers have a lot of heart for a small market team, Amazing!
So damn tired of seeing Turner doing very little to nothing.
This is where the 2nd half really begins. Cubs got a fight ahead of them they need a long winning streak I believe this the 2nd time brewers had a steak of 10 or longer
Is boyd hurt hasn't pitched in over a week. And their talking about an opener Monday. What's up with that
Shaw completely lost the leg kick. TGAT IS WH!
Why is no one in media blasting Craig about Busch sitting
Two out of three is not good enough when you have the Brewers breathing down your neck. They had opportunities to score some runs and extend their lead but they couldn't.
Certain other teams in baseball like the Brewers are here. I read some comments on yahoo from Cubbie fans obnoxiously saying Cubbies had division in back pocket and laughed at the thought of the Brew Crew even coming close.
Chicago scrubs
Shaw changed his batting stance heavily. Hands now have movement and are up by his head instead of by his chest.
He also changed his stride even more, has something similar to aaron judges stride
