ESPN Gives New Orleans a F the Murray Trade in Regrade
July 21, 2025
So initially ESPN gave the Pels a B+ for the trade but now with his injury…we have a regrade of F. I personally believe it wasn’t too bad of a trade. But Dyson Daniels has improved.

If Murray doesn’t get hurt no way it’s an F. Definitely still lost the trade tho, given how Dyson broke out and the fact that the Pels have Poole now
“Already looked like a mistake” lmao both teams got the same grade initially
Dejounte having 2 long-term injuries is more unlucky than anything, doesn’t warrant a F though
Pelicans didn’t know Murray would get two long term injuries in his first season?! Are they stupid?!
FOH
I mean the hawks got the player who was better last year and two first round picks in top of it while getting off the DJ contract…
Obviously hindsight now but tough to argue anything but a pretty huge failure for the pels
Accurate
I don’t think Murray is that good of a player. He gets stats but like CJ or Ingram I’m not sure he’s a truly winning player. I don’t think he’s a guy you trade 2 firsts and a promising young player for. Character concerns and lack of effort on defense made me dislike the trade.
Team should be using two firsts on players with star potential. Basically using 4 firsts and Daniels on Murray and Queen is just bad asset management.
So if Derik Queen becomes an all-NBA player and the next pick becomes a bust, the draft day trade should be an A+ on this logic right?
This is all done in hindsight, there was no way for the Pels to predict he was going to tear his Achilles. I don’t blame them for doing this trade, just shit luck like always.
agree cuz why didn’t they just go get poole in the first place. now they have murray on the books for no reason
People act like Dyson wouldn’t have torn his MCL, ACL, broken his hand, and ruptured his Achilles if he stayed in NOLA…
In hindsight, this was absolutely an F grade and even if DJM didn’t get hurt – he still doesn’t fit with Zion. It seemed like he was going to bring a level of intensity, “dog,” and leadership that this team desperately needed but between his injuries and his personal life issues (neither one his fault, just incredibly unfortunate), we didn’t even get that out of him. Hindsight is 20/20, I was initially pretty happy with the trade but obviously would take it back if possible.
So if Dyson tears his ACL this year, are they going to regrade this again and give the Hawks a D?
I went to like 10 games in Nola for the 2023-2024 season. Dyson had flashes of being good but you couldn’t have expected what he became in Atlanta with more minutes. Pelicans are cursed. But still if Dejounte doesn’t get hurt then this trade isn’t an F. Injuries are apart of the game and who is wasting time going back and regrading a trade since the main part of the trade tore his Achilles.
It was an F the second it happened
Just give us a default F until further notice
Ignoring the write up, this is valid. It was a fair trade at the time that turned into a disaster for us with Murray getting injured and Dyson making a leap
I think the original grades were accurate it sucks DJM got hurt I think he’ll contribute when he gets back and I’m happy Dyson jumped but is Atlanta in any better of a position with or without him ?
I mean, even without evaluating the players themselves. Hawks got picks AND a player who has played significant games for them as a starter, and we got a handful of unimpactful games from our only gain in the trade(injury or not, what does or *does not* happen on the court matters). Gets even worse when you see what Dyson turned into/provides for them
If you could grade it lower than an F it should be a Z level trade for the Pels at the moment. So far, hawks got *something* PLUS draft capital and the Pels got a very expensive *nothing*
Would say this is also general assessments of David Griffin in a nutshell. A lot of His moves looked pretty good until players got wrecked by injuries
AD trade really turned into Jordan Poole and a broken Dejounte Murray😔
This was a W trade at the time and I remember how excited I was. Shame that NOLA sports are so cursed. Regrade is true but no way of knowing he’d tear his Achilles
With the ability of hindsight – yeah its an F. However judging trades in hindsight is kind of irrelevant. At the time it seemed to make sense. Just per usual for the Pelicans everything fell apart.
This is dumb. Dj out all year.
Question. If Dyson goes down with an injury dies this get retroactively get changed back to a B? Because it’s pretty shit to change things based off an injury
I mean there’s not really an argument that it isn’t a disaster in hindsight. Unfortunately, we don’t get to make decisions with hindsight.
We consistently have the worst front offices
Add this to the list of awful things that have happened to the pelicans that have a big asterisk on them.
“BUT BUT! If only this other thing happened then…!”, we say as Pels fans.
That’s what hurts about this team. There’s a crazy long list of “almost” when it comes to them.
It starts to make you feel crazy:
-Injuries in the AD/boogie era leading to decimation in the first round vs GSW multiple times
-Zion scoring 40 then getting injured in the playoffs
-Zion in general
-DJM trade
Same media that was acting like we gave up an All Star when Lonzo left for the bulls btw
Also worth pointing out that we made this even worse to trade up and get Queen and Newell.
well i mean we gave up the best perimeter defender itl, a young player, and a vet center that we struggled without last season, along with 2 picks, so i’d say so
Duh I gave them a F when it happened Daniels and Murray the same player Daniels is younger and plays better defense
Yeah a lot of that F is the DJM injury. What can you do? DJM was traded to NO with a decent contract for his level of play, that’s what gave him value. The picks were modest (unlike the draft trade). This comes down to ATL unlocking Daniels from a high energy bench piece to a potential rookie max extension and long time starter.
I guess some still pay attention to espn….
The player we got broke his hand and tore his Achilles. In retrospect it is a F grade because of that. If DJM had a health season and was healthy now it would be a different story
