🔴LIVE 🔴Houston Astros VS Arizona Diamondbacks / July 21/ Envivo Tv/MLB the show 25

Phoenix Inner League baseball on MLB the show. It’s the Houston Astros and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Along with Chris Singleton, I’m John Shami. Well, singy here in Arizona. And this is a ballpark where traditionally the ball has jumped, but a few years back they installed that humidor and now offense has been neutralized a little and I think hitters still in their minds believe that the ball does carry and that can produce some confidence as you step into the plate for your at bats. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. So, just about set and our pitcher tonight, Mel Kelly. And Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure. He’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. Most guys, they get a little tight, they start to aim the baseball, but for some reason he gets looser. The ball comes out of his hand with more life, and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. That’s in there. And it’s 0 and two. Quickly down 02 in the count. I think you got to choke up a little bit. spread out the feet. You don’t know what the velocity or the location of this next pitch is going to be. Gets a piece and stays alive. And the 02 now one missed. One ball, two strikes. Swing and a miss. Chase the fast up the ladder for strike three. Definitely made him chase a little bit out of the zone right there. I don’t think that’s a strike if he takes it. Pretty textbook pitching. Get ahead in the count. Get the guy in the box on his heels and then force him to chase your pitch where he doesn’t have much of a chance to do any damage. Here’s the former MVP, Jose Altuve. He’s done a great job making contact recently, hitting better than 350 this month. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Altuve officially joined the 2000 hit club in 2023 with every career hit as a Houston Astro. Third player in club history with 2,000 hits and 200 home runs. Jeff Bagwell, Craig Bigio. Those are the two others. And that’s some great company. Boob. McCarthy makes the grab. Two down. Now we check out the Astros lineup. They do a lot of things well in this offense. Singi. They control the strike zone. They make pitchers work hard for outs. And as a result, one of the better OBP teams in the league. Well, what I love about it is it’s an organizational philosophy. Whether you go to instructional league, whether you go to spring training, you see these guys even during batting practice when it doesn’t matter. They’re practicing that type of approach. Boo. And when you have that filtering through the organization, even when you call up a player, he steps right in and continues with the pattern that they have established at this level, which ultimately leads to a lot of success. You know, you translate on base percentage, it’s basically this. Teams that have a high on base percentage, they don’t make outs at a very high rate. As my buddy Joe Sheen says, OBP is life. Swang and a ball lifted in the air. Makes the grab and that’s the inning. We’ll go to the bottom of the first. 0 0 back here with my pal Singy and towing the slab, Lance McCullers Jr. Singy. He’s kind of a road warrior. Yeah, I definitely say so. You know, some guys shrink a little bit on the road. They’re so used to just, you know, having the comforts of being at home and having the fans behind them. But this guy seems to thrive in adversity and being in some hostile environment. So, when you have a player like this on your team that goes out there and competes, you definitely like your chances away from your home ballpark. Corbin Carroll, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. And another ball. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. Very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with. And a big swing and a miss. You know, that’s a swing you’ll see a lot against a good sinker. Just right over the top. Tough to barrel that up. Still two and two after the foul ball. Kicks and fires. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. And now Jake McCarthy. Jake McCarthy. First pitch just misses. McCullers winds, fires, and he grounds one to the right side. Walker takes it himself here tonight. An efficient start to the home first. Two away. Now the Diamondbacks lineup as put together by Tory Lavell. Not a whole lot going their way offensively the last few games. Chris. Yeah, boo. That can put more pressure on the pitching staff to try to limit the opponent to just one or two runs a game knowing that their offense is not scoring right now. And that never really works well because you try to be too fine and you end up giving up a lot of runs. So we’ll see if everybody can just relax, bring things together and perform at a level that they’re capable of. Dubond to first. Three up, three down, inning over. Diamondbacks down quickly, scoreless after one. New inning getting started. And here now is the Astros cleanup hitter, Christian Walker. One of the rare guys at first base that you almost think defense first. He is that good with the glove. You’re talking about top of the list elite defensive first baseman. Kelly back to work right through there for a strike. First baseman are involved in just about every single play. So when you have somebody so solid over there, uh, you can breathe a little easier. popped up. Foul territory behind the plate. Herrera hauls it in and there’s one away. Bill, that was a pitch you got to crush. Unbelievable that he missed it right there. And I’m telling you, he is going to be frustrating with himself until his next at bat. At the plate is the Astros catcher, Yiner Diaz. Let’s go, Diamond. The other thing about an elite defensive first baseman like him, it it just instills a ton of confidence in those guys playing third and short that have to make those long tough throws at times and he just handles them so well. So, he really makes the entire infield better with his glove. And ball one. You’re not just talking about the ability to pick, Chris. One of the things about him, the range is impressive as he’s able to go to his right and get to those balls in the hole. That misses the zone. Two balls, two strikes. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. One down. Base is empty. hacks and misses. It’s a strike out. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time little anxious. Here’s Taylor Treml. That’s outside. Ball one. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a played appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter. And that misses and it’s two and0. No score here in the second. That one’s spoiled and the count now two and one. Clober to right field. Way back. Gone. That one felt good. Third home run of the season and they grab the lead. It’s one- nothing. That’s a fun way to take the lead. Just hit one out of the park. Knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spit on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. Here’s Mauricio Dubalan. And that’s through there for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. There’s the strike. This guy at the dish excels in two strike counts. Got to be careful with him out there on the mound. On the outside corner. Got him looking. Astros not a run on the solo homer. It’s now a one- nothing ball game. You’re dialed into the show back here in the desert. And here’s the first baseman, Josh Naylor. Josh Naylor. That one’s in there. That’s strike one. Highf fly ball pretty well struck out towards right center. That’s back and gone and we’re all square. It’s 1-1. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. A breaking ball on the inside part of the play requires a hitter to stay really square with his mechanics. If you fly open with the front shoulder, there’s no way you keep that ball fair. An outstanding job mechanically. He deserves that home run. So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. Au Heno Suarez stands in now for the Diamondbacks. That’s in for a strike. Always exciting to see a laid-off home run in an inning. Kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. Hard hit left side. Dubond to first and that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. Adrien. And next is the designated hitter, Adrien DelCastillo. He’s a catcher by trade, but the DH here in this one. Swing and a miss as he was late. Swing and a miss. And the count is 0 and two. James Kingsley, our played umpire. Consistent and maybe a little generous on the edges. Yeah, Boo. He’ll give a little bit on the edges like you said, but from what I’ve seen, he usually does that when a pitcher is just commanding those parts of the strike zone and essentially they’ve earned it. The umpire rolls with them. Yeah, there’s a ball. What about some non nos? Like you can’t call the umpire blue the way you do in little league or high school, right? Yeah, even in the minor leagues, you’ll learn quickly uh you call the umpire blue. You better learn his name. And uh that’s just part of being a professional player and even a major league player. As the game has moved along, we see more and more information supplied by teams about the umpires. I’ve been in clubouses where they have pictures of all four guys, nicknames, hometowns, and as well hobbies listed just so you can kind of small talk the umpire a little bit. That’s great. One gone runner at first. Bla1 Alexander stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Squirts away a little bit. And the one that one back up the middle and it gets through. The throw to third. Throw pulls him off the bag and he’s saved. Two consecutive base hits for these guys here. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground balls. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. Alec Thomas. Now, I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. That one not close. And that’s ball one. He’s looking for a ground ball to get a double play and out of this jam. Two on, one out. Ground ball left side. Could be two. There’s one to Walker and that’s two. One scores in the inning coming on this solo home run. All even now at 1-1. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Top half of the third inning. Now the left fielder Cooper Hmel. Cooper Hmel. And that one upstairs. Ball one. Hmel goes 5’9 in. 30 years old now. He joined the team as a free agent. Check swing and he went and they count one and one. And he swings through that one. Left field and it falls. So a runner aboard to start the inning. Back against the wall with two strikes, but found a way. That’s a ball that a lot of times you’ll see the shortstop or left fielder be able to get to if it hangs up in the air long enough. But right there it just died and found a way to drop in on the green stuff for the base hit. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So we’ll see if they try to get him into motion at the plate. Shay Wickham fought off foul. and he’s down 02 as he swings through it. Sometimes being lucky is a swing and miss. If he makes contact with that pitch, probably hits into a double play. That one just misses. Hummel aboard here at first with nobody out. That one ripped and this one looks like trouble. Lead runner around second. Rounds third headed for the plate. The tag and he’s in there. It’s 2-1. He was all over that one. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. Now it’s the right fielder Cam Smith 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. That catches the corner. swing and that ball smashed on a line. Carol makes the play. Grounder tags at second. He’s in there. What was that? Jose Altuve up to hit here. Fly to left his first time. Jose. Altuve always seems to be setting records or reaching milestones. Boo. In 2023, he became the fastest player to reach 2,000 career hits, 200 home runs, and 200 stolen bases in MLB history. Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. the one-1. The short stop takes the ball. Pretty easy to give up on that pitch right there. Started on the edge of the plate with the spin. You know it’s going to finish well off the plate. Next offering is in for a strike. Well, at that velocity, if that’s all you’re seeing, 88, you can handle that all day long. That’s what you get in batting practice. But off the velocity of the fast ball, that is a very tough pitch to adjust to way inside. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. Got him swinging. Vic Keratini at the plate. 0 for one with a fly out to center. And this is a big opportunity for him to pick up his teammate right here. And that gets the top of the zone for a strike. And that one’s a little bit low. And now it’s even one and one. The 1-1 is fouled off. Two outs. Spoils that one. And it remains two and two. And that just misses. Recognized that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. Christian Walker up next for the Astros. Foul ball and it remains a full count. He’s mixing his pitches really well late on that fast ball after seeing the change up. Let’s see if he can elevate one. I think if he does, he’ll get the swing and miss. And ball four, two aboard. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk. Very gritty. So, two outs with runners on the corners. And now it’s Christian Walker 0 for one so far. And that is out of play. Two aboard, two outs. And that one fouled off. Got him. looking good job at damage control right there. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out. Gets out of the jam. Clearly, he’s happy with those results. And welcome back to the ballpark. ready to go for the last half of the inning. And here’s the catcher, Jose Herrera. Herrera. Swang at a highf fly ball. Well struck. That one carrying. Get out of town. He flexes his power with that swing. And this game is tied. It’s 2-2. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time in that at bat. Boo. aggressive and it paid off. He’s so good at getting his arms extended and that’s exactly what he did right there. You don’t typically want to pull a pitch in that part of the plate, but he doesn’t allow his wrist to roll over. Stays through the ball, gets the loft and gets the home run. This is Corbin Carroll 0 for one after striking out looking to start the game. swings and lines a base hit into left field. The first move felt like a bit of a guess. You have to be right in those spots or things can get away from you awfully quickly. Jake McCarthy. Now the number two hitter Jake McCarthy grounded out his first time up and the pitch is outside. Ball one. Runner on the go. Swinging a miss. Safe at second. And he easily steals the bag. And the go-ahead run is now in scoring position. this to third and he can’t come up with it. Still able to fire over. The throw is late and the defense comes away with nothing. Now batting shortstop Harago Ptomo. Next to hit for Arizona, Heraldo Peromo. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season, so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. in the air out to center. Grabs it on the run and there’s one down. They trust him in center field because he’s capable of making plays on the run. And we saw it right there. That’s a player you want patrolling center field. Someone who can attack the ball off the bat. And now it’s Josh Naylor. He’s already homered here in this one. chopped on the ground. Fires to second for one and they bounce into two already. This one ends the third. One in the inning and it comes from a rather unlikely power source. And we’re deadlocked now at two a piece. Major League Baseball is on the show. Back here at Chase Field, John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Yiner Diaz. Swing and a highf fly ball deep left field that’s back there out of here. An absolute smash to left. And just like that, they’re out front. It’s 3-2. One pitch, one swing, one home run. Yeah, you could say that’s efficiency right there. Didn’t need much time in the box to make an impact. Love to see a hitter aggressive on the first pitch of an at bat. You watch him from the on deck circle. So when you step in the box, you’re ready to pull the trigger wherever it’s at. Really good job by the hitter. Total conviction on that swing. Next is the designated hitter, Taylor Trl. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Oh, you just got to delete it. You give up that leadoff home run. Go back to work. Focus on this next batter. Yo, one swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. Top half of inning number four. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. So he picks up his sixth strike out of the ball game. Well, that at bat seemed to be over as soon as it started. Three pitch strike out. You’ve got to be better at the plate right there at least to foul something off. Extend that at bat. Mauricio Dubon up next for the Astros. Went down looking on three pitches last time. Let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here. That one missing inside. One out. Base is empty. Swing and a miss. And the count is one and one. Next offering is outside. just off the inside edge and that’s ball four. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about. And here is Cooper Hmel. One for one with a single so far. That one finds the zone. 0 and one. Swung on. Belted. Going back. Caught just shy of the wall. Well, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. Here’s the second baseman, Shay Wickham. Doubled his first time up. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Swang and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field. Runner puts on the brakes at second. So it’s first and second with two out. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. Now the batter now Cam Smith that misses and it’s one and0. Dubong at second. Wickham at first. Two out of the inning. Swings through that. The Diamondbacks with some movement in the pen. Jake Woodford up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. Richards getting cranked up as well. Ground ball up the middle for Domo. They take the force out that ends the inning and they limit the damage. Astros notch a run on the solo homer. It’s now a 32 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Bottom of the inning. Auhane Suarez up to hit now. Au Suarez. Go and one. Well, these Diamondbacks just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. So many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches they’re chasing outside of the strike zone. You can’t do much of anything with those locations. And that’s been true again today. And as a pitcher, when the hitters are swinging at everything, you feel no need to challenge inside the zone. You just keep working the corners and expanding that strike zone and beyond, and they just keep eating right out of your hand. Well, take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty simple in terms of putting them away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. Now it’s the DH Adrien DelCastillo. That’s down and in. A slider missed. The Astros up by a run. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. And now it’s even up. top of the zone for a called strike. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. Throw to first in time for the second out. Good job to clean it up after the drop third strike. Well, I don’t think there’s a hitter alive that hasn’t at some point succumbed to that pitch right there. It just looks like it’s in the zone. going the entire way and then the top spin and gravity take over in the blink of an eye and it’s just such a tough pitch to lay off of. He swings and fouls one off. Pitch misses there and that’s ball one. in the air right side. Smith on the move. He’s there. He’s got it. And that is that. All set for the start of the inning. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Jose Altuve. Kelly back to work. And that’s in for a strike. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. 02 pitch that far out of the zone gives the hitter a little confidence that maybe he can climb back into this at bat. Fights that one away. Still one and two. just missed. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. Just misses with that one. That pitch was pretty borderline at the top of the zone and he’s not digging the call out there on the mound. Clearly pretty frustrated. So, he’s going to have to collect himself a little strikes him out for the second time today. Well, he didn’t get the call on the mound the pitch before. Felt like he should have had him looking, I think. But, you know, that’s good composure right there. He found a way to come back with another good pitch to get him to swing and miss. And now Victor Keratini check swing called strike. Base is empty. One away. And we’re in the top of the fifth. next offering is downstairs. Swings and misses at the pitch off the plate. Gets to it onto first. Not in time. legs it out. Up next for the Astros. I feel like that’s one of those rules in baseball that’s tough to explain the logic behind if you’re talking to a new fan or someone trying to learn the game. It’s like, wait, what? The batter struck out, but he still gets to be on first base. Yeah, I hear you. It’s a weird one. Plus, the pitcher gets credit for the strikeout. It’s an over for the batter. But of course, no out is actually recorded. Kind of one of those just trust me, let’s move on situations. Now, Jake Woodford will take over here. This is his fifth appearance of the year. Jake Woodford, man at first with one gone. Christian Walker up next for the Astros. Bowl for two in this one. Down and away for ball one. Here goes the runner. Little chopper rolls foul. Keratini stands at first with one out. Runner goes again. That one is absolutely belted. High bounce. Takes it over the fence. That’s an automatic double. This is a tough play for the offense to stomach. I mean, they did everything right, but the automatic double just ruined the hit and run. The runner had a great jump from first and at the plate. Really good contact. Just a little bit of bad luck, robbed him of a run. So digging in, Yiner Diaz swinging a ground ball and foul ball. Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. Next one misses. One and one. swings through that one out in front that time. Oh, that’s that slurf right there. He threw it extremely well. Talk about just a ton of break. So tough to get that barrel to swings and misses. Struck him out. And now the DH Taylor Trel. He’s already homered in this game. And that skips in the dirt. Highf fly ball out towards left field. That’s back. Gone. Another homer, his second home run of the game. It’s 6-2. How in the world did he managed to hit that one out? It wasn’t even in the strike zone. Opposite field home run. And it’s a warm night for sure. Ball’s not being slowed as it gets up in the air to the outfield. So, that had no problem getting out of here. Really nice show of power going the other way. So, two down and now Mauricio Dubon and that one clips the corner. Two down to and that is cut on and missed. And that is strike two. And that’s a fair ball. Takes the turn. He’s digging for second. He’s there. It’s a two out double. really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. Ripped that one down the line and kept it fair. And even when you hit it that far out front, you still have to keep your hands tight to your body so you don’t hook around that baseball and put it in foul territory. And that right there was perfect. So runner at second, two down. Cooper Hmel up next for the Astros. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. right side. Makes the sliding stop to first and very nicely done for the out. But the biggest swing of the inning comes right here. A three-run homer. Now a 62 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Here’s the center fielder, Alec Thomas. Thomas. And that’s in for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. You know, these Dbacks, as this game goes on, have to be more disciplined at the plate. Chasing pitches has been a big part of the story. We’ve seen it quite a bit today. It’s been tough for him to make contact at times, and it just doesn’t look like they’re seeing it very well as a group. Outside low and a count one and two. And on the mound, you know, confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses. He’s had them eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game. waves at the bender for the strike out. Boi just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up at two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Jose Herrera. Hit on the ground up the middle. That’s a base hit. So, a man aboard now with one away. And now the right fielder, Corbin Carroll, one for two. Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point, that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. That misses the zone and that is ball one. And that’s in the dirt. Two count. Great hitter at the dish. If you’re going to miss, you’ve got to miss outside the zone. You miss inside the strike zone, you’ll be asking the umpire for a new baseball. And that drops in for a strike. In today’s game, not that many fast ball counts, but hitters still in the back of their minds. They’re looking for one. Two change up call right there. Excellent pitch selection to go with. Next offering in there for a strike. Two and two now. Corbin goes down on strikes. Oh, that’s a curveball that people like to describe as a hammer or Uncle Charlie. And you can see why. It’s not a looping slow curve. He throws it hard and it gets plenty of bite on the end. McCarthy in now. Takes ball one off the plate. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So, that’s a good take by him. Two balls, no strikes to count. Last couple of pitches, breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. That’s off the mark. And that’s ball three. A rare three ball count here. He’s been throwing strikes all day. Got to be ready to hit if you’re in the box. Next offering is in for a strike. Man, this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. So now two on and two outs. Not what he wanted to do there, Boo. that keeps this inning alive and gives this offense a good chance to cut into their deficit. Stepping in, Heraldo Peromo breaking ball through there for a strike. Activity in the Houston bullpen from Valdez getting ready to go. Susa getting loose as well. Altuve slings to first. Misplay doesn’t cost him. Inning over. Diamondback strand a pair. They still trail it here. It’s six-2. Top six and stepping in for the Astros, Shay Wickham. Wickham. Wickham. 26 years old and he was a fifth round pick in 2020. On the ground right side and that chance handled to first and that’s one out as they get the leadoff hitter in the six. Cam Smith up next for the Astros. 0 for three in this one. Let’s go back. In there at the knees and one ball one there off the plate inside. Two and one. Just missed. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. One down, base is empty. Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Struck him out looking. Jose Altuve will hit next. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. just missed. Altuve tries to hold up. Appeal to first. No swing. Next offering in there for a strike and the count two and one. Swinging a ground ball up the middle. Sends it to first and the Astros put down in order. Nothing doing here this half. To the bottom of the six we go. 456 coming up. It’s the Astros six and the Diamondbacks two. So, a new pitcher out of the bullpen for the Astros. From Valdez bringing in the lefty with a left-handed hitter coming up to hit. Classic bullpen move right here. So, we’ll see how it works out. Leading off with a diamond backs, first baseman Josh Naylor. First offering and it just misses. just missed. Next offering is down low. So definitely a little wild right out of the gate. Well, it could be a little tough coming from the bullpin mound to this mound, but you’ve got to find a way to get ahead in the count quickly. He hasn’t. We’ll see how this at bat turns out. Now a check swing on three and one. Appeal to third and he went says Larry Bullard on the ground to the left and foul ball. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. That one misses. So a leadoff walk. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. Man at first, nobody out. Auheno Suarez stands in now for the Diamondbacks. That one close rule to ball. 1 and0 activity in the bullpen for Houston. Steven Ochert preparing to come on if needed. Naylor gets his lead at first with nobody out. Up the middle, dives, but it kicks off his glove. No throw and they can’t get the outter. First and second, no outs. Next to hit, Adrien Del Castillo. Fast ball for a strike. 0 and one. Curve in the dirt. The one-1 is fouled off. And it remains two and two and a ground ball to first. Slings to second and that’s two. For me, that’s one of the toughest double plays to turn on the infield. The first baseman has to get inside, create a throwing lane to hit that middle infielder to start the double play and then from there completing it back to first. Really good job all the way around. Now up next for Arizona, Bla1 Alexander. That one down the line and that’s just foul. Two outs and a runner at third here in the bottom of the sixth. Line drive that ends the frame. We go to the top of the seventh. Digging in is the switch inning outfielder Victor Keratini. And there’s the strike. Well, these Astros, simply put, are producing a lot of quality swings. Everything seems to be clicking. And the six extra base hits in the game kind of tells you everything you need to know. They’re not getting fooled up there at all. And a quick out number one. Up next for the Astros, first base. And next to hit for Houston, Christian Walker, one for three. Swings through that one for strike one. This guy’s sink has so much drop in it. It’s almost like a split finger fast ball. Instead of just weak contact and balls on the ground, he gets swings and misses. Base is empty, one away here in the top half of inning number seven. Pitch misses. Now one and two. had a breaking ball. Misses outside. This one smoked could be trouble. Makes the turn and heads for second. in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. All over that one right there. When you can turn a ball around at 107 off the bat, it’s going to make you feel really good inside. If he elevates that a little bit more, it’s definitely out of here. Now, the Diamondbacks manager is out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Jake Woodford gives way and he’s responsible for the runner on second, so the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. Now, Trevor Richards comes on now. He’s making his fourth appearance of the season. Trevor Richards. Yer Diaz up next for the Astros. Known for his rocket arm behind the plate. And that’s a little bit high. Ball one. One out and a runner at second. This one in the dirt. just missed. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position, he’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. That’s hard hit in the line. Carol makes the play. Runner tags at second. And he’s up to third safely with two gone. Next is the designated hitter, Taylor Tra. He’s already homerred twice, the last one back in the fifth. Just seems like he can’t miss right now, seeing the baseball as well as anyone on the field. Now, I know the odds are against him, but who’s going to bet against this guy right now? And that one is inside. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Kevin Ginkle up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. Number 43. The lefty warming up as well. Two outs and one in scoring position. And there’s the strike. line drive and foul ball. That misses. It’s two and two. Two outs. That one off the mark and the count’s full. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. And ball four to a board. Up next. So, two outs with runners on the corners. Here’s the third base, Mauricio Dubon. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level for him right now at the plate. It’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. And that is in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. That’s down and in. Really good run. Perhaps a little bit too much on that two seamer. Couldn’t hold the corner in the air right field. Carol moving under it and he makes the catch and that is that. Two left for the Astros. They lead it six-2. back here in the desert. And now the center fielder, Alec Thomas. our fielder, Alec Thomas. And that’s downstairs. And the count even one and one. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. Twins and misses. It’s a strike out. Pulled the string on the change up. Up next for the next to hit for Arizona, Jose Herrera. A switch hitter batting right. First pitch misses. That’s a little bit low. Right through there for a strike. The Stros leading by four here in the bottom of the seventh. That misses the zone. Three and one. That’s ball four. Tried another fast ball but missed the spot. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. Pretty much gifted him first base with a quick free pass. So, back to the top of the order. And here is Corbin Carroll. Swang and a highf fly ball right field. That one back. That one on its way. And it’s gone. His 22nd homer of the year. It’s 6-4. That was blasted. Absolutely. No doubt off the bat. Oh, that one got in the jetream on a line drive. We saw the numbers on the backs of the jerseys of the outfielders, which is usually bad news. And all of a sudden, they’re back in this ball game. Base is empty, one away. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Jake McCarthy. And that’s in there at the knees. and that’s through there for a strike and it’s nothing in two. Oh, when you can throw that big curve on the inside part of the plate, very difficult pitch for the hitter to get on plane with. You can have a lot of success if you can pitch in that location. Now batting manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make a move to dip into the Astros bullpen. Rober Valdez won’t go any further. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout and we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Brian Abrau gets handed the rock out of the pen. He has a great slider with tons of movement. Now up next for Arizona, Heraldo Perdomo and first offering is fouled off. Two down. Nobody on outside with a breaking ball. Hot shot to third. Throws to first. Inning over. Diamondbacks draw a bit closer thanks to this home run. It’s now a 64 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Kevin Ginkle just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Here’s the left fielder, Cooper Hmel. Leftielder Cooper Hmel. The pitch. This one in the air center field. Carous. One up, one down. Really nice job to get your first out of the ball game. Up next for the Astros. Shay Wickham up next for the Astros. swing and a highf fly ball pulled foul and that’s out of play. Let’s go back. Now the one ripped on the ground to second throws to first in time. Now batting number 11 Now it’s the right fielder Cam Smith. Swinging in a line drive ripped out of the right center. That’s a base hit around first and hustling for second. The throw in and that’s a two bagger. Oh, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. So runner at second, two down. Now here is Jose Altuve. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Rudder at second. Two down. There’s the swing and a miss. And now one and two. battling here as he fouls it away. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. So a two-out double, but they don’t score. Last half of the eighth coming up, it’s the Astros six and the Diamondbacks four. And we’re back. And now the first baseman, Josh Naylor. One more time. Just missed. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Josh her, the closer of the staff, is getting loose to finish this one off. King warming up as well. And that drops in for a strike. And a foul ball. started to go at the one two. A check on it to third and he held up. on the ground right side. The flip to the pitcher covering one gone in the bottom of the eighth. If you want to be a great defense, you have to deliver consistently. It doesn’t matter how many highlight reel plays you make if you can’t execute the small stuff just like we saw. Au Suarez up to the plate now. And the first pitch misses for ball one. The Diamondbacks trailing by two near the bottom half of the eighth inning. Next offering misses down and away. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. Swing and a miss as he was out front. Just a really nice slider down and in there. He wants to get the hitter thinking fast ball. Speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement. One down. Base is empty. Swanging a ball drilled center field. Keratini sizes this one up. He’s got it. There’s two away. Now batting hitter. Adrien Del Castillo now at the plate. Just off the inside edge. And another ball. That one in there across the letters. And there’s a foul ball. Two out. Space is empty. swings through that one. It’s a strikeout. Nothing doing for Arizona. They trail it here six to four. And welcome back to the ballpark. We go to the ninth. And stepping in for the Astros, Victor Keratini. Ginkle back to work. That one misses and it’s one and0. Activity in the Arizona bullpen. Number 27 getting loose out there. Number 43 also getting ready. That one finds the corner and the count even at one. Next offering is fouled back. had a good eye there. Just not taking the bait right there. But a good pitch with two strikes. That one misses. And now it’s three and two. And he swings and lifts one to deep center field. And one hops off the wall. Should be extra bases into second easily with a leadoff double with that fast ball. Even though it’s high velocity, you’ve got to live on the outer edges. When it’s right on a tee right down the middle, professional hitters are not going to have a problem turning it around. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Now it’s going to be Christian Walker. And that one fouled off. Keratini stands at second with no outs. just missed. High in the air out to right. Carol moving under it. Makes the catch. Grounder tags at second. The relay to third and it comes in too late. He’s up to third on the fly out with one away. Now batting catcher Yiner Diaz. Here’s the catcher to hit Yiner Diaz. I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone here. Pitchers looking for a strikeout or a ground ball hoping to keep that runner at third. And first off is fouled off. Here’s a sackfly situation and he’s got to make sure he gets the ball out over the plate and get those arms extended. They’re trying to crowd him with the infield in. This be a big pickoff if he can push a run across. Next pitch is downstairs. Runner on at third. One gone. Hoo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Next offering away upstairs. comes up empty. That’s strike two. Great velocity at 97 at the top of the zone. That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. Works the walk. Pretty good spot on the outside, but just couldn’t quite clip the zone. That’s a stone cold take. Now, here’s the Astros designated hitter, Taylor Trl. First pitch doesn’t find the zone right through there for a strike. Sit down and he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. So, two down now and here is Mauricio Dubon. He had a foul ball. That one fouled off. Corners are occupied with two down. Strike him out. That one is upstairs. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Two on, two outs. And a swing and a miss. and he’s registered three Ks in this one. Couple of strikeouts with runners on. Sometimes you got to really bear down and he did just that. Nice job of getting out of the jam and out of the inning. Back now and on the mound the closer Josh her. I think closer has to be one of the toughest jobs in baseball and we see a pretty high turnover rate because of it. Every outing seems to be high pressure, this one included. We’ll see if he can wrap up the win and get himself a save. Now it’s the second baseman, Bla1 Alexander. Part of what makes Hater’s fast so unique is that he gets carry on the fastball up in the zone and yet he grips it like a sinker. So technically his fastball is labeled as a sinker. swings through that one for strike two. out towards right center field. One away. Now batting center fielder Alec Thomas. Next to hit for Arizona. Alec Thomas 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. Goes 6′ 3 in. He features a two seam fast ball, a slider, and he works in a change up. One down, base is empty. Hit on the ground to the right side. Takes it himself and they’re down to their last out. That’s a huge defensive play in the late stages of the game. It might not be the most challenging we’ve seen today, but it needed to be made. That’s helping your team. Jose Herrera stands in now for the Diamondbacks. And that’s in there for a strike. Little slider that finds Lamar. Pop foul out of play off to the right. Two-run game with two away here in the bottom of the ninth. hit hard to the ground and up the middle. Base hit and that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. That’s tremendous fight from him and I know it’s got the dugout fired up down there down to the last strike and he comes up with the hit to keep the game alive. It ain’t over yet. Carol stands in with two away as he takes a ball. slashes this one and it could be trouble. Lead runner makes the turn at second headed for the plate. Relay throw home. Tag. Got him. And that’s the ball game. Sometimes games come down to this. You’ve got to press the issue. Try to get that run across and tie it up. But an excellent throw. Nice job of concentration putting the tag on the runner. Exciting finish to this game today. 65 the final here today for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shami saying so long
