Detroit Pistons Looking To Trade Jaden Ivey? | Pistons Talk Podcast
Heat. [Music] [Music] Heat. [Music] Welcome to Pistons Talk podcast. Hope you guys had a great weekend. In today’s episode, what we’ll be discussing, the Detroit Pistons shopping Jade Navy. There was a clutchoints.com article that was published today kind of speculating whether or not the Detroit Pistons could move on from him. and we’re going to be reading that, reacting to it, and giving our overall honest opinions and thoughts on the matter. Jaylen Duran caught up with a reporter at the Big Three event that happened this past weekend. They were here in Detroit. Uh JD was just kind of talking about the Pistons. We’ll play the video for you guys that are watching live uh on YouTube right now and kind of just react to what JD is saying. And we’ll end the podcast with some fun speculation. It is free agency still kind of even though it is July 21st as we’re recording this episode. And Jonathan Kaminga still does not have uh a team. He is a restricted free agent and you know could he make sense for the Detroit Pistons. They do need a power forward. He is an RFA and I think that would be a very fun topic to end today’s episode. But let’s get into the Jaden Ivy stuff. Okay, that’s probably why you’re here. Now, when I read this article, I was kind of confused because there is there is a part of the article that just isn’t true. Um, and it’s not so much about Jaden Ivy. It’s kind about like the play styles in Detroit. But let’s put the article on the screen for you guys that haven’t seen it. Took a screenshot of it, so I hope you guys don’t mind if you want to read the article. It’s from Brett Seagull of Clutch Points, and he kind of talked about a couple teams in depth, but it says Detroit Pistons. One interesting name that came up in some early trade chatter entering the 2526 season at NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, Jaden Ivy. Coming off a broken left fibula, Ivy is entering the final year of his rookie contract and rival teams have questioned how well he fits into the image Detroit has built for itself. Whereas Kate Cunningham takes his time, attacks opponents at his own pace. Ivy is an uptempo guard who utilizes the speed and athleticism in his game. The Pistons as a whole are in a team that pushes the pace and they tend to move the ball around on offense instead of attacking an isolation set like Ivy likes to do. keep an eye on the Pistons seeking a big upgrade before the trade deadline and potentially including Ivy in the said move. So, there’s a lot that I do want to just break down with this article. I I want to start even before we, you know, talk about the Jade Navy, you know, reported uh trade rumors. To say that the Detroit Pistons aren’t a team that likes to push the pace or they’re not a transition team is just false. If you guys want to look it up, Google’s free. They were the second best team in the NBA this past season in transition. in transition buckets at pushing the pace. The Detroit Pistons are a young athletic team that do like to push the pace and run the floor. You have athletes like Asar Thompson, Ron Holland, Kate Cunningham, Jaylen Duran. Um, these guys like to run. So, I don’t really know how many games Brett actually watched this year. Maybe it was the beginning of the year when they weren’t pushing the pace when Ivy was still relatively healthy before he did break his fibula, before he did break his leg. But that’s just not true. Um, you know, throughout the season, we we saw the Pistons really like to push the pace and put pressure on defenses, and that’s why they got out to those big leads this season. That’s the first thing I did want to touch on. It just to me, I was just like, okay, like, what are we doing here? Let’s circle back to the trade rivers. Now, I think it’s fair to say we can agree that Ivy is on the last year of his rookie contract. he is extension eligible this summer. If the Pistons do want to ink him uh for the next couple of seasons, they’re in their right to do that. So far, they haven’t. Jaylen Durn’s extension eligible as well. Neither of these players have gotten extensions from the Detroit Pistons as of right now, July 21st, as I’m recording this podcast. It’s fair to speculate what the Pistons might do, but everything we’ve heard from this front office, from Tjan Langden’s mouth himself in multiple press conferences this summer, he’s really high on this young core. He’s really high on internal growth. He had mentioned that uh they’re very excited to have Jaden Ivy back after breaking his fibula. He had reported that, you know, Ivy is back to practicing five verse five with his teammates and he looks really good out there. Treyan has been very positive about Jaden Ivy and I think he really wants him to have a great season like he did last year. I would find it very hard to believe that the Detroit Pistons are looking to move on from Jaden Ivy because he doesn’t mesh well uh with Cade. Now, you know, you guys are open to your opinions. I know some of you guys just don’t like the fit with Kate Cunningham and Jade Ivy, and you’re right to your opinion. I disagree with that, and that’s what makes podcasts and, you know, YouTube videos fun. Uh, we’re not always going to agree with each other. I think Jade Navy last season in a very short sample size in 30 games, I think he was starting to figure it out. I think he was starting to figure out playing with Kade Cunningham, playing with more space out there, more perimeter threats out there. I think really helped open his game. And even when Cade was out due the injury, uh, you know, Ivy got those lead guard reps, had a gamewinner against the Toronto Raptors, had an incredible fourth quarter against the Sacramento Kings, beat them on a buzzer beater, got a coach fired, got Mike Brown fired Fox traded, uh, you know, months later. But, um, that’s not really Jade Night’s fault. I just kind of find it funny that they they let Mike Brown go after that Jade Ivy buzzer beater in Sacramento. But let’s just kind of circle back to that. I don’t really think the Detroit Pistons are openly looking to shop Jaden Ivy. you know, executives across the league might speculate the fit with Jaden Ivy, but I I think the Detroit front office is smart enough to understand that if this guy gets a consistent three-point jump shot and he shot a really good clip from three last year at a really good percentage, that’s a damn good shooting guard to pair next to Kate Cunningham. Now, the defense, I think, does need to get better with Jaden Ivy. I think we can all agree there. There have been flashes of him trying, rotating, communicating defensively, but I think it would be really foolish for the Detroit Pistons to try to trade him right now. I don’t really think the value for Jaden Ivy is at peak value. I think it’s probably at its lowest point just because of the injury and a big question mark with a lot of front offices right now because they don’t really know uh what they would be getting in Jaden Ivy. So, uh that’s just my take on this article. I would kind of take it with a grain of salt just for the fact that uh Brett who is a clutchpoints.com national reporter by the way uh thinks that the Detroit Pistons are a slow paced team and they don’t like to push the pace when in fact they were one of the best teams last season at pushing the pace and JB Baker staff uh talked about it with reporters multiple times this year about how the Pistons do look to push the pace and they’re at their best when they do look to run, That’s just kind of my take on it. I did want to discuss it uh for a couple of minutes with you guys. I I I just don’t really think the Pistons are really looking to trade any of their core guys. I I think they’re they’re still wanting to have that internal growth and see how far this core can take them before kind of making that big move to see what they need next. I kind of have my opinions of what they need and uh uh maybe we’ll talk about it in future podcast, but I want to transition over to Jaylen Durham. Now JD was with a friend of mine. You guys know this guy. He’s all over social media. He is a I guess you could kind of say he runs a a a media page, a fan site about the NBA. It’s Courtzside Buzz, formerly known as NBA Buzz. Caught up with Jaylen Duran um at the Big Three event here in Detroit over the weekend and asked him a couple of questions uh about the team. I want to play this little 30 secondond clip for you guys right now. Jayen Ivy is healthy now. A back court of him and Kate Cunningham, two young star guards. What’s their ceiling in the NBA? Man, sky’s is the limit. They don’t have no ceiling, man. I feel like our team doesn’t have a ceiling. We got a lot of young guys who are just growing and getting better as time goes on. You know, we got one right here, Ryan Allen, who is going into his second year and looking to make a big big jump. A couple of big additions. Duncan Robinson, Caris Lebert, you guys already had a great 2425 season. What’s in store this upcoming season for you guys? Just looking to grow as a team and build on what we already started. Okay, there. So, there’s a couple things that uh J D caught up with Mikey from Courtside, but shout out to Mikey uh for getting that interview with JD. Uh he talked about Jaden Ivy and Kate Cunningham and their ceilings. He feels like they don’t have a ceiling. I love JD. I think we can all agree they do have a ceiling. Um, I I do think that both of them have uh other gears in their development to get better as basketball players because both of those guys are under 25 years old. I I think there are areas for both of them that they can get better at. Um, I love Duran saying they don’t have no uh no sillings whatsoever. That’s just like a A+ teammate. Um, he also kind of talked about Ron Holland and Ron Holland is expected to take a a big jump this year. I’m going to say something to you guys and it might sound like a hot take. It’s It might just be me being high off of summer league in Ron’s performances and maybe I shouldn’t take summer league performances. Um, I I maybe I shouldn’t like look at a summer league game and have these opinions, but I do feel if Ron Holland gets the playing time, I would put his name in most improved player of the year award conversations. Not saying he’ll win it, but at least in conversations. You look at Ron Holland coming out of the draft. I think the one thing that a lot of us talked about was the shot and it just not being there. Um, you know, he shot 20% from three his rookie year. You know, sub 20s. Summer league shot 46% from three on five attempts a game. That’s a big jump. You know, previous summer league he shot, you know, 20-ish percent. So, not only did his shot look better in summer league, I think defensively he got better. He got stronger. I was really impressed with his summer league. And I I I think the reason why I do agree agree with Jaylen Duran of him looking to take the next big jump. I think there are so many things in Ron Holland’s game that as a Piston fan, you just love you. You love him coming off the bench being that spark plug. Whether he’s getting into fights, which I really don’t mind. kind of gets, you know, the the rest of the team going, just kind of flowing off of that energy. Um, him just being a really good defender, you know, diving for loose balls, getting those steals, pushing the pace in transition, kind of being just that Energizer Bunny out there. If he’s if he’s hitting three-point shots at just a 30 35% clip, that’s a really big improvement for the Detroit Pistons. And I honestly think like I’m expecting big things from Ron Holland because that summer league left me feeling really good. I don’t know about you guys as Pistons fans, but in the the three games that Ron played, I felt really good. Each game he did something different that just kind of I I’m I’m I’m re-watching these games and I’m like he was not doing that last year. He he wasn’t, you know, posting up. He wasn’t doing step back threes. Like the playmaking looked really nice. There were some passes that he made. His teammates just couldn’t finish. But like the playmaking got better. Uh I I felt like the defense got better. He’s gotten stronger. U the shot he’s still working on with Fred Vincent. He mentioned it with some reporters here locally that he’s been working on that jump shot tirelessly every day in the gym. And you really saw the work that he’s put in so far. in three summer league games. And I’m with JD. I am expecting big things. He’s looking to take that year two jump. And I don’t really know where he falls in the rotation right now. You guys, especially he was backing up Assar Thompson, but now you kind of have Caris Levert and you also have Duncan Robinson in the mix. I do think JB will find minutes for Ron Holland. I just don’t know if they’re going to be the same amount of minutes that he was getting last year because Assar was out with blood clots. So, he was getting a bulk of Assar’s minutes. But, I’m really excited for year two. Ron Holland. I’m sure you guys are as well. But did want to kind of just play that little clip from Jaylen Dur at the big three event talking about uh you know Kate Cunningham and Jaden Ivy and their ceilings and that year that year two jump from Ron Holland really has me um feeling positive. Maybe his name will be on you know some sports books for you know MIP odds. You never really know, but I honestly think there’s a good chance if he does get the playing time, um, he could see just better production off the bench with the Pistons. I want to end the podcast with could Kaminga make sense for the Detroit Pistons. So, if you guys have been following just the saga over there in Golden State, um, the Kings were a player for him. Turns out Golden State wasn’t even close to trading Kaminga uh to the Kings. The thing with his situation is he’s he’s a restricted free agent right now. And the reports are that he wants $30 million in his new contract because he’s in the same boat as Jade Ivy and Jaylen Duran. you know, his rookie contract is getting ready to expire and he’s looking to get paid. I think from the Warriors standpoint, the Warriors like him, but they don’t $30 million per year like him. They just don’t. I I think it’s going to be a situation where either he takes his qualifying offer from the Golden State Warriors, toughs it out for a year, and just enters the 2026 free agency summer and signs with the new team and gets his 30 million that way. or a team like the Pistons could trade for him, but maybe they could, you know, sway themselves to believe we got one more year to buy us at 26 million. Could he be a replacement for us at Power Forward? And here’s the thing, now this was a fan submitted question by you guys. I could understand the thought process of wanting to have a Tobias replacement because who knows if Tobias wants to come back to Detroit. Who knows what his price point might be with the new contract. He signed a, you know, two-year $50 million contract with the Pistons. I don’t know how Kamingo would fit in Detroit just for the fact that he to me he’s a very isolationheavy forward. Now, could it work? Sure. I I I think it could work. I think Kate Cunningham is a good enough basketball player to make it work in Detroit. I’m just not entirely sure that the Detroit Pistons are a Kaminga team. Um the talent’s there. I I just think the kid needs an opportunity and he just really hasn’t gotten a fair shake in Golden State in my opinion. I think there have been moments that Steve Kerr does actually play him and there’s other moments where the kids is rotting on the bench and it sounds like the Warriors want to, you know, have their cake and eat it too. Like they they like him, but they don’t want to give him the money that he’s asking for. And I I I I think in the open market, the way the contracts are inflated now, I don’t really think $30 million is a whole lot given what the type of production he could possibly give you. and he’s young, so he’s probably going to develop and get better. I I just think a change of scenery for him would be better for his career path. In my personal opinion, I just think the Warriors have just been just an up and down roller coaster with him. I’m just not entirely sure how the Pistons front office feels about Jonathan Kamingo. I do feel though they will be looking at power forwards. they will be looking to upgrade the power forward position because I think they know that Tobias isn’t going to be here forever. They’re going to need a a longer term solution. I think Tobias is a great placeholder for now, but eventually you’re going to have to start to look for a bigger four that can stretch the floor, you know, switch defensively. Um, and you know, this just be a scoring punch out there. Um, and I don’t really know what types of power forwards are, you know, available in the open market. But I did want to kind of touch on that Jonathan Kaminga stuff for, you know, a little bit. It was a fan submitted question by you guys on on social media. You know, could he be a possibility for the Pistons? As of right now, I just don’t know. Um, I think there there was a trade for Kaminga. Probably a three-team trade that the Pistons have to get involved with. And who would the third team be? I I just don’t know. But I appreciate you guys watching today’s episode uh of the pod. We’ll be back tomorrow with another uh short form uh podcast episode. Hope you guys had a great weekend though and as always have a great night. Go Pistons. Peace.

Subject: Suggestion for Roster Move: Acquiring Andre Drummond
Dear Trajan Langdon,
I'm writing to share an idea I think could benefit the Detroit Pistons. As a huge fan of the team, I believe acquiring Andre Drummond using the player exception could be a great move.
With Drummond's experience and skills, he could provide valuable mentorship to young players like Jalen Duren. His rebounding expertise and defensive prowess would also complement the team's existing strengths. Additionally, having a veteran presence like Drummond could help stabilize the lineup and provide depth.
The idea that Ivey doesn't fit with Cade has always been a myth created simply because of silly tribalism. That is all.
Can you also tell him to get Amir coffery
“The Pistons, as a whole, aren’t a team that pushes the pace…” That sentence alone lets you know the writer has no clue of what they’re talking about. They’re just giving a corny hot take they heard from one of the corny anti-Ivey Pistons podcasters (not PistonsTalk); it’s essentially click-bait in written form, don’t fall for it Anthony lol
I would’ve traded him for jaren Jackson jr but he’s hurt now and the grizzles just paid him. Also thoughts on if the pistons should sign Bol Bol? He would be a cheap tall power forward that’s available
Ivey not goin no where
Jaden is used goods he’s been injured twice chances could be high with a re injury
I am tired of yall saying all these lies
Any time there's a mention of trading Ivey, it just feels like click bait. Not saying that's what this is, the article you're responding to is the actual click bait. Trajan clearly has no intentions of trading the core 5, even though I think he would if offered the right deal. The right deal isn't trading Ivey for Derrick White though, or anything along those lines.
So many people are ready to trade away this core, I haven't been this optimistic about our core since the days of 6 straight ECF appearances.
Tired of y’all and this topic…remember people used to say Jaylen Brown and Jason Tatum couldn’t coexist …
They wish they could pry Ivey out the Pistons' hands. So, let's create a false narrative that doesn't exist. It's actually a compliment these reporters want to break them up before they take over the Eastern Conference.
