MLB LIVE🔴 Houston Astros vs Arizona Diamondbacks – Jul 21, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
And welcome in everybody. Glad you’re with us. Inner league baseball on MLB the show. It’s the Houston Astros and the Arizona Diamondbacks. First pitch coming your way next. just about set to go. And starting this one, Mel Kelly and Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure. He’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. Most guys, they get a little tight. They start to aim the baseball, but for some reason he gets looser. The ball comes out of his hand with more life, and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. And he’ll one and that’s a little bit high. Well, second pitch of this game and already getting squeezed a little bit. That one fouled off. Caught and looking for the kill. So, next up for Houston, Cam Smith. And ball one and the one just missed. Next offering is fouled back. The count two and one at a swing and a bouncer. Foul of first. One out. Base is empty. Now a fly ball to right center. Thomas sizing it up. He’s there. He’s got it. Two down. Now we check out the Astros lineup. A guy who’s been huge for them over the last month plus. Isach Paradis and Boo. He’s their team leader in home runs. So, you know, the pitchers on that other side. Man, they took a lot of time preparing for him in that pregame meeting. You know, he’s got a lot of pop and it’s real pop. It’s not fluky at all. He can absolutely change the outlook of a game very quickly. So, watch out when he steps in. And first offering is fouled off. Two out. Space is empty. Clips the corner. Oh, and two. And that’s outside. And that one upstairs. Well, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. Swing and a miss. struck him out and good work there as he gets a one two three. Nothing doing there for Houston. And now Arizona gets its first opportunity in a scoreless ball game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Back here with my pal Singy and towing the slab, Colton Gordon. Well, it hasn’t been a great year so far in terms of erra, but he’s had some decent games and there have been some flashes of greatness, if you will. We’ll see today if he’s able to get ahead of hitters and perhaps get some swings and misses, put himself in a position to bring that erra down because, you know, in the back of his mind beyond the W, he wants to have a better earn run average. Bottom of the first, this is Corbin Carroll and the pitch is outside. Ball one. Let’s do it, Dax. center field. Trel on the move. Puts it away for the out. Now the Diamondbacks lineup as put together by Tory Lavell. Someone who makes things happen for them in part with his legs. Corbin Carroll and Boo. He brings a big bat to this lineup. He’s on pace to hit more than 40 home runs this year. And that’s a guy where if it’s more than a couple of games without a dinger, guys are wondering what’s going on. You’re so used to seeing him round the bases. You put a guy like this in the middle of the lineup and just put it on autopilot. Big time hitter. Always a ton of fun to watch. Jake McCarthy batting with one down, takes the strike. Lifted in the air down the left side and that’ll fall for a base hit. So a man aboard now with one away. batting third. Here’s the short stop at the plate. Heraldo Pomo, a switch hitter batting right. Gordon checks over to first and he’s back. [Applause] Runner on the go. Swigging a miss for the second. Great jump. And that is a stolen base. It wasn’t even close. I think that steel kind of sets the tone not just for this game, but for the entire series. First inning, game one. So that kind of tells me they’re going to be aggressive on offense and try to force the issue whenever they can. inside. One and one. One out and a runner at second. In the air, center field. Trel, two down. Betty for first baseman Josh Naylor. So, the go-ahehead run in scoring position and now it’s Josh Naylor. Out of bounds right side, tosses to the pitcher covering the bag. That’s the third out. Inning over. One left for the Diamondbacks. Scoreless after one. Back here at Chase Field, second inning, set to go. And now it’s Christian Walker. One of the rare guys at first base that you almost think defense first. He is that good with the glove. You’re talking about top of the list elite defensive first baseman. Kelly back to work and that’s in for a strike. first baseman are involved in just about every single play. So, when you have somebody so solid over there, uh you can breathe a little easier. The other thing about an elite defensive first baseman like him, it it just instills a ton of confidence in those guys playing third and short that have to make those long tough throws at times. And he just handles him so well. So, he really makes the entire infield better with his glove. Well, you see him trying to pull that inside pitch right there. And that’s not the kind of approach that you want to have. Even if you do get to it, it’s going to be very difficult to keep it fair. You’re just going to make it a long strike at best. You have to be able to stay within the baseball on the inside of that path to it. And that way, if you’re a little quick, the ball gets hit hard somewhere and it’s not foul. Victor Keratini in the box with one away as he takes ball one. That one pushed foul. You’re not just talking about the ability to pick, Chris. One of the things about him, the range is impressive as he’s able to go to his right and get to those balls in the hole. The 1-1 is fouled off. Remember Mark Katse is a real good defensive outfielder. Good instincts, not great speed. Fans another. And that’s three straight strikeouts. Yeah, there’s no doubt, Boo. Electric stuff from the jump. I mean, there’s just no messing around right now. It’s still very early, but we could see a pretty impressive outing here if the strikeouts keep coming in the way they are. One thing you have to be aware of, though, is a high strikeout rate might impact the pitch count as the innings roll on. Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, fast ball and he gets out of the way. Straighten him up a little bit. Yeah. And I figured you would get Katay into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. Swing and a miss. Stuck him out and he strikes out the side for the second time today. Impeccable command in that one. Three batters, three strikeouts. That’s electric stuff out there on the mound. Back here in the desert. Here’s a big power threat. Au Heno Suarez. No, he’s been having a great year this year and hitting home runs at a good clip and the matchup is very favorable. [Applause] Not even close there. And that is ball one. Nope. [Applause] sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. Well, they call that an advantage count for a reason. You’re so much more likely to get something you can handle. He wasn’t able to elevate it, but he put a great swing on it. Right on time, good balanced approach and just blasted it through the infield. Here’s Guriel. First offering misses badly for ball one. Swing and a pop off in foul ground. And there’s one down. Batting seven, center fielder, Alec Thomas. Alec Thomas now. [Applause] First offering. Ruer goes Walker. He steps on the bag. No chance at the double play with the runner in motion. Fell off to a great start. He’s really cruising out there on the mound. He’s got a chance to get through these first two innings with under 20 pitches. That could set him up to go deep into this game. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position. Bla1 Alexander stands in now for the Diamondbacks. a bit behind with that swing. It’s strike one. The next offering misses at one and one. One and one. Hit hard. Base hit. And they hold him at third. 90 ft away with two out. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. [Applause] So, two outs with runners on the corners. Now at the plate, Jose Herrera swinging a fly ball in the air out towards right center field. He’s hit. Alexander Brown’s third headed for the plate. Throw is offline and he scores. It’s two nothing. Well, he had the opportunity to drive in some runs and he comes through to break the tie. High fast ball even a little above the zone, but such a good job of staying tall on the backside. Get that barrel there to meet it just in time. I tell you what, it’s not easy to do. Two outs, runner on first. Now it’s the right fielder, Corbin Carroll. He’s 0 for one. First pitch just misses. Here leads off first with two down to the inning. Next offering is down low. [Applause] [Applause] And a fast ball in there for a strike at 91. [Applause] Smash to the left side. They get the force. Inning over. They get two runs on three hits. No errors and one left. We play two full. It’s the Diamondbacks two and the Astros nothing. New inning getting started and stepping in for the Astros. Mauricio Dub. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. [Music] Now, it’s the switchhitting outfielder Cooper Hmel. Splits the plate and that is strike one. Hmel getting to start in left in the eighth spot in today’s lineup. He joined the team as a free agent. Nobody out. Runner at first. pulls that one foul. Just off the outside edge. Now one and two. Well, he’s not afraid to fall into a two- strike count. Knows the strike zone very well. So much so that I think umpires will look at him and determine whether it’s a ball or strike, if he swings or not. [Applause] [Music] Fights that one away. Still one and two. Runner at first with no outs here. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Now it’s Zack Short. He’s been a great free agent side. There’s a strike. Let’s go back. Come on. Diamond back. [Applause] Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Quite the start to this game on the mound. Looking very dangerous to these hitters. Seven punch outs already. So, this lineup hasn’t had much success trying to figure him out. I’m impressed with what we’re seeing here. Isak Paredus up next for the Astros. Let off the game with a strike out. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Way to lay off that fast ball up right there. You’re looking for something you see well that you can handle, but you also have to keep the discipline so that you’re not popping up pitches that are just a little too high. [Music] And that one is lifted in the air. Carol under it, squeezes it, and that’ll do it. One left for Houston. They trail things here two nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark down the number two hitter Jake McCarthy. Hitter Jake McCarthy. And a base hit into right center field and the leadoff man aboard now stepping in is the switch in short stop fly to center his first time he’s 0 for one Gordon keeping him close [Applause] to The kick and the pitch. Runner goes swing and a tapper then rolls foul. Man is he fast. That’s so fun to watch. [Applause] On the ground could be two. Spin throw. That’s one to first. Not in time. Great effort there. Now batting first baseman Josh Naylor. Here’s Josh Naylor. grounded out his first time, taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform, but at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Just off the inside edge for Domo over at first with one away. Runner on the go. Swing and a miss. And that’s a stolen base. Not even close. turned out to be a pretty good pitch to run on right there. Off speed pitch down in the zone. That can be pretty tough for a catcher to reach down and grab it and then get rid of it quickly enough to prevent that would be base. One out the runner at second here in the last half of the third. slapped foul man at second. Oh, this one in the dirt. All three runner at second here. One gone. [Music] Foul ball left side. He’ll see another and a pinch. Gets a piece and stays alive. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. and a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. Came inside with that two strike fast ball nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate. Couldn’t get around on it and catch it out front. Many times if you do, it’s a foul ball. And you know, a lot of pitchers, they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter. And when they’ve got him up against the ropes, you got to figure out a way to put them away. Did a nice job right there. Auo Suarez up to the plate now. That one close. Rule the ball. And it’s one and0. Runner at second. Two down. [Music] That one misses and it’s two and 0. That’s good pitch there. Billy had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, get a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. [Music] Swing and a miss. It’s two and two. Didn’t recognize off speed. Thought it was fast ball a little bit out in front. Got him looking for the K. That was pretty nasty. One left for Arizona as they’re unable to add to their two nothing lead as we go to the top of the fourth. And now the right fielder Cam Smith and a pop off right side foul territory. Naylor pulls it down and there’s one away. [Applause] Jose Altuve up to hit here. His first at bat was a strikeout. And that drops in for a strike. Base is empty. One away. Top half of inning number four. Next offering down low and in the dirt. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. fouls it off. Still one and two. Swings through that one. It’s a strike out. Two down. Base is empty. And next to hit for Houston, Christian Walker struck out swinging his first time. That one finds the zone. Throwing one. Generally second, third time through the lineup, you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Looks like he’s doing a nice job of it. [Music] Two outs. There’s the strike. Foul ball still a one and two count. [Music] Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again upstairs. And the count is two and two. Two, two strikes. [Music] cut on and miss. Struck him out with number nine for him in this game. Nine. Astros are down quietly. They trail it here. Two nothing. And we’re back. Bottom four. Here’s Lordis Guriel Jr. Left fielder. Lordis Guriel Jr. in the air left field down the line and an automatic double as it hops the fence. The automatic double kind of feels like enjoying cruise control in your car. Boo. You don’t need to keep the pedal down as you cruise into second base. Just no worries in the world. You know what? He put a really good swing on that one. Next to hit for Arizona, Alec Thomas 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at bat. Slider misses outside. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Let’s go back. Come on back. Swings and misses and the count one and one. Way high. Two and one. [Music] [Applause] Pitch misses inside. Three and one. Guriel leads off second with nobody out. Out front. Pulls that one foul. Now it’s three and two. Man at second. Got him. Larry Bullard rings him up. Now batting. Next up for the Diamondbacks. Alexander Singled and scored his first time. And that curve ball drops in there for a strike. Back door him with a breaking ball. Just got the corner. There’s nothing you can really do with that. Next offering misses. One ball, one strike. Just missed with that back door breaking ball. Well, if he gets a swing and miss or called strike, 02 count instead. It’s 1-1. Look for him to go back to that pitch later in this at bat in the dirt. [Applause] And that one is in the dirt and the count is three and one. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count and ball for two aboard. Up next for the Diamondbacks, Jose Herrera stands in now for the Diamondbacks. He drove in two with a single his first time out. And that one ripped to left and there’s a hit. Throw back in. Holds the runner at third. Base is now loaded. Only one away. The right fielder Corbin Carol. manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make a move to dip into the Astros bullpen. Colton Gordon departs and it wasn’t his best start but he kept them in it to this point and we’ll come back with a new arm. Now pitching for Ryan Gusto gets the call from the pen. Still pretty early in the ball game. So this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs, kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. Back to the top of the lineup, Corbin Carroll stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Golden opportunity right here inside. Just missed. Oh, he’s so good about trying to drive the ball to the opposite field gap in these situations. If he takes that approach, he could bust this game wide open. All loaded up. Dangerous hitter at the plate. Swing and he breaks his bat. Grabs it bare-handed to first. Run. Scores. But a terrific play to get the out. Man, he made that look easy, didn’t he? I mean, there’s nothing simple about that play, Boog. Especially when you break it down. But right there, everything was done in one fluid motion to deliver a strike over to first just in time for the out. Tell you, I could watch that all day. Jake McCarthy stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Yeah, don’t need much damage here. Just a base hit. Likely will score two. And that misses. And that’s ball one. Big moment in this game. Two outs, two runners in scoring position. And could really break this thing wide open early. [Music] Let’s go see. [Music] Next offering popped in the air right field. Nabs it and the inning is over. Two men left stranded but they do push across one. We’ve played four. It’s the Diamondbacks three and the Astros nothing. Back here at Chase Field. All set for the start of the inning. Vic Keratini at the plate. Kelly back to work and takes low for ball one. One and0. Foul ball there. Foul ball. Swing and a high-fly ball down the right field line. Carol makes the grab and there’s one down. [Applause] Up next for the Astros. Here’s Taylor. He struck out swinging at his first at bat. Inside corner for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Cully’s been incredibly efficient in this one. first pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point misses. It’s a strike out now at 10ks with still a few innings left. So expect him to add on to that total that you know pitchers are looking to have a strike out per inning. I mean that’s excellent work. Uh the way it looks now I mean he’s going to have a better rate than that in this one. So really good stuff working on the mound in this one. In the air right side, Carol moves towards it, hauls it into the inning. He continues to roll on the mound as five shutout innings are in the books. He hits the Diamondbacks three and the Astros nothing. Back here in the desert, John Shami with my buddy Chris Singleton. It’s set to get us started. Bottom five. Peraldo Pomo. Let’s go. Close but called the ball. Ball one. [Music] Right through there for a strike. The shorts stop takes the ball. Swings through that one out in front that time. Man, he really sells the change up with that arm action. Next pitch, not close. Up high. [Applause] popped up left side short under it and puts the squeeze on that one and there’s one away. Now batting first baseman Josh Naylor Josh Naylor stands in now for the Diamondbacks for two in this one. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Ball outside. There’s the swinging a miss. One and two. That one back up the middle and it gets through. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Audio Suarez up to hit now. One for two. Heyo Suarez. [Applause] line drive and that’s a base hit and out to a board. [Applause] There you go. Now batting and it’s Lordis Guriel Jr. Lordis Guriel Jr. breaking ball through there for a strike. Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. Two on, one out. Ground ball left side and foul ball. Next offering is downstairs. [Applause] And that’s downstairs and outside. Runners at first and second with one gone. Last half of inning number five. [Applause] That misses the zone and the count’s full. swing and a miss and he struck him out. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strike out. You can’t be mad at yourself after an attack like that one. Thomas. So, two down now and here is Alec Thomas. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. Looking good. Two on, two outs. Swinging a bouncer. Walker a flip to the pitcher covering. Third out and that ends the frame. Diamond back strand a pair, but they lead it three nothing. All set for the top of the six. Here’s the left fielder, Cooper Hmel. He swings and misses at the first pitch. 0 and one. It really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today. Good fast ball. Excellent slider, but they’ve not been able to commit to one velocity and stay there. Next pitch is outside. Excellent arm action on that two strike change up. Just missed. Man, he wanted that call. Fights that one away. Still one and two. CA strikes him out for the second time today. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. [Applause] And now the short stop. Zack Short caught looking his first time up. popped foul out of play off to the right. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. Popped up right side. Alexander pulls it down and there’s two gone. Now batting the designated hitter, Isach Paredus. And now the DH, Isach Paredus. Paradis goes 5′ 11 in, 215 lbs. And they went out and made a trade for him last season. That one inside. And that’s ball one. Two down, nobody on. And we’re the top half of the sixth. Next pitch is downstairs. Next offering is fouled back. The two on the way and that just misses. Well, I I think he’s trying to get a feel for where that one missed. I mean, it could have gone either way, but he looked a little shocked for a second there. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. And that is that. Make it six shut out innings for him out there. Now he hits the Diamondbacks three and the Astros nothing. Bottom of the six. Here’s the second base. Bla1 Alexander. Second base. Blaze Alexander. Close but called a ball. Ball one. Well, the game plan for this offense has been pretty clear. They’re being aggressive at the plate, but still finding ways to pick their spots without falling into the habit of being overaggressive. Five hits for them on the first pitch alone. So, they’re swinging and connecting right out of the gates. And of course, sometimes you need to be patient as an offense and let the pitcher come to you, but you can’t argue with the game plan they’re using in this one. Herrera lays off down low as he digs in for the third time. Two balls. No strike. Clearly didn’t come out of his hand the right way. Left that curve ball way up. And another ball. Next offering is in for a strike. [Music] In the air, fairly deep to right field. Hauls it in for the out. Now batting the right fielder. So back to the top of the Arizona lineup. Here’s the Diamondback’s leadoff hitter, Corbin Carroll. Pitch misses inside. One and0. [Music] Swinging a foul straight back. Two down. Nobody on that one rifted right center field. That skips over the fence. So, it’s an automatic double. Well, there’s something really nice about getting yourself an automatic double like that. You get to stroll into second base without having to worry about a pro or getting your uniform dirty. And now you’re just looking for the next guy to kind of do the same thing. Maybe put one in the gap so you can jog home as well. Jake McCarthy stands in now for the Diamondbacks. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Carol on it. Second with two down. On the outside corner for a strike and the count is 0 and two. Well, that’s textbook pitching right there. I mean, he executed those first two pitches perfectly in the dirt in there safely. Carol up to third on the wild pitch. Even with a good secondary lead, sometimes it’s hard to see just how far that ball’s gotten away from the catcher. And if you can make it to third base, pretty much standing up. Well, that time he seemed to have a pretty good read, gets to third safely, and now he’s just 90 ft away from scoring. Two outs and one in scoring position. That’s down and in. [Applause] popped in the air. Left field diving, makes the grab. Great diving catch to end the inning. That’ll fire up the dugout for sure. Time to go swing it. Top of inning number seven. Digging in, Cam Smith. And that one is in for a strike. Activity in the bullpen. John Curtis preparing to come on if needed. Diffani also throwing. [Music] Gets the outside corner with that one. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2 and it skips in the dirt. [Music] Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. swing. Get a ball popped up. Pulls it down and he makes the catch. One away. Now batting second base Jose Altuve. Here’s the former MVP Jose Altuve who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. And first offering is fouled off. Strike on the inside corner. One ball. Two strike. Base is empty. One away here in the top half of inning number seven. Ground ball right side and it goes just foul. Here’s a one-two swinging a miss that one in the dirt. Gets to it on the first out on the drop. Third strike. Two gone. Oh, that slider wasn’t even close to the strike zone and he got him to chase. That’s just a bad approach right there. Either he was looking for something else and got completely fooled or he was sitting all over the slider and just couldn’t resist the temptation. But man, really expanded right there and didn’t have a chance of making contact with that pitch. And the batter now, Christian Walker, first off, and it just misses. He’s got a rare skill set out there on the mound. Even when he’s low on energy, his stuff still has bite to it. You just don’t see it flatten it out just because he’s tired. He’s still delivering good action. And that’s in there for a strike. And now it’s even. The 1-1 is fouled off. Next offering upstairs two. just misses the mark outside the zone. Three and two. Come on back. Highfly ball near the pole. That one is fouled. Well, that ball was hit pretty hard and sure had home run distance, but if you’re the pitcher out there on the mound, you execute it. Just a long strike. You go after him and finish him off. The 3-2 is outside and it’s ball four. Well, it might be time to dig into that bullpen. He’s looking a little fatigued to me. So, two down. Victor Keratini up next for the Astros. They hope he’s the guy to spark a comeback. He tends to play better when his team is behind, so why not him? And first offering is fouled off. Two outs right through there for a strike. Oh, two [Applause] line drive makes the play and it’s out number three. So the Astros leave one still down three nothing. [Music] We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Brian pretty tight game. So they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. 345 do up for the home team. Now it’s going to be four for three in this one. Pitch misses and it’s one and0. Back door breaking ball just missed right there. And boy, umpire didn’t give him the call. I bet you if he throws it again, hitter knows he’s going to have to swing it. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Bounce to the left side. slings to first and one away in the bottom of the seventh. Up next for the Diamondbacks, first base. Now here’s the cleanup hitter for Arizona, Josh Naylor. One for three. Hard on the ground to first takes it himself and a couple of quick outs. Now batting third baseman Auo Suarez. Two outs, base is empty. Now the third baseman, Au Heno Suarez. With this kind of lead, he can swing freely, try to hit the ball out of the park, do what he loves to do. And the first pitch misses for ball one. The Astros have some action in their pen. From Valdez, the left-hander, is getting that big fast ball of his, ready to go. [Music] Two balls, no strikes to count. In there at the knees for a strike. [Music] And now two and two balls. [Music] Two down. Nobody on down to the dirt. Swing and a miss. Throw to first. Got him. Getting over on the strike out now pitching. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. John Curtis. He last pitched four days ago, so he should feel pretty fresh. So digging in, Taylor. Taylor struck out on just three pitches last time. The Stros in striking distance, but have some work to do. Boo, it starts with the laid-off man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. Yeah, the first offering a fast ball for a strike. Pitching has been pretty dominant in this one, but you got to be careful. Not working with too big a lead. They could get right back in this ball game if you’re not careful. Get it going. Swinging a miss as he was laid. That misses the zone. Going to count one and two. Too close for me partner to take that O2 fast ball. But for whatever reasons, he let it go by. He’s still in the at bat. I don’t think he’ll let the next one go. swings and sends a rocket to right. Drops into the glove and there’s one down. It was all over that fast right there. I tell you what, if he gets under it just by a fraction of an inch or a little bit more, that’s way back. Here’s Mauricio Dubon. That misses the zone. And that’s ball one. That clips the corner. Yeah, that’s too high. Two and one. The Astros trailing by three and we’re in the top of the eighth. Fouls one off. two and two. Had a good eye there. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. remains a full count. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. [Music] Outside and that is ball four. It wasn’t easy, but he earned that walk after a long at bat. When you go that deep into a bat, the hitter usually comes out. Cooper. Cooper Hmel getting ready to hit. Now, these guys definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. Pretty [Applause] good pitch to take a pass at in a one count. Just not able to square it up inside. Take your base. Now batting short stop. Two on, one out. And the batter will be the shortstop. Zack Short. Let’s go back. [Applause] The tying run at the plate. Late on that fast ball. It might be time to choke up a little bit. Get that front foot down early. Maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. [Applause] That one just misses the outside corner and it’s one and two. And the slider just misses. Really good slider. He’s up there just hoping that it ends up off the plate away. Dubong at second. Hmel at first. One gone. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. Headed for the plate. He’ll score easily and it’s an RBI single. And it’s now a two-run game. A perfect example right there. That plate discipline. It pays off. The deeper he gets into account, the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle. Now the Diamondbacks manager is out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. John Curtis gives way and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Now pitching. So out of the for the Diamondbacks, Anthony Dan. This guy’s a strikethrower. He’s done an excellent job of avoiding walks so far this season. Runners at the corners here. One away. So now the Astros designated hitter, Isach Paredus. That’s outside. And that’s ball one. Rudders are at the corners. One away. And that’s in there for a strike. And now it’s even double barreled action in the bullpen. Kevin Ginkle up throwing for manager Troy Lavello. Woodford getting cranked up as well. [Music] [Applause] Two on, one out. Ground ball could be two for Domo to second. And that’s quick work out of the pen. One batter, two outs, in and over. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. And this is now a 31 ball game. Back after this on the show. And welcome back to the ballpark. Out of the bottom of the eighth. Now the left fielder, Lordis Goreel Jr. Guriel Jr. Abrau back to work. That one almost got him. That’s out the corner. [Music] Now, there’s a certain point where you have to commit to what you think you see. And he guessed wrong right there. Nasty slider with just terrific bite at the end. Next offering is outside. Pretty easy to give up on that pitch right there. Started on the edge of the plate with the spin. You know it’s going to finish well off the plate. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. And now the center fielder, Alec Thomas 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. First pitch and he just misses. And another ball. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. Next offering is in for a strike. That’s down and in. A slider missed. This is a really good feeling for a hitter at this point in the ball game. You know that they don’t want to walk you. So, you’re going to get a pitch to hit. You just better not miss it. And it’s fouled away. Fouls it back with two strikes. Swaying in a ball popped in the air and it falls and out to a board. Up next for the Diamondback. Now it’s the second base, Bla1 Alexander. Blaze Alexander. First pitch misses. First and second, no outs here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. Here we go. That pitch gets the inside corner. That’s strike one. Way out front for strike two. One ball, two strikes. [Music] Swang going to miss. The velocity blasted it right past him. Great location with that two strike fast ball. I tell you what, as a hitter, you’re looking to protect the outside part of the plate. Stay back on something off speed. So many times that location with two strikes, you just can’t get around on it. And that’s a tough one to compete with. Carrera stands in now and watches strike one. really good job in this spot to get ahead in the count. He’s going to have to continue finish off this hitter. Clips the corner and it’s 0 and two. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. Swing and a high-fly ball left field. Oh no. And he makes the catch. Two away. Now batting the right fielder, Corbin. Manager out of the dugout now. And he’ll make a move to dip into the Astros bullpen. Brian Abrau done for the night. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Now pitching for Astros go to the pen and here comes Frober Valdez. Val and he’s got a big time breaking ball to contend with. Hitters going to have to pick it up early if they’re going to have any chance. So up next, Corbin Carroll. fouled off. He was late. Got the bat going too soon. It’s strike two. Squirts away a little bit. bows it off. Still one and two. Guriel over at second. Thomas on at first with two down. Goes down looking. So a strong showing there from the Houston bullpen through eight full. hits the Diamondbacks three and the Astros won. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Kevin Gle. Well, he’s been a bit of a wild card out there in terms of throwing strikes. He’s definitely struggled with free passes this year. And stepping in for the Astros, Cam Smith. Cam Smith [Applause] late on that fast ball. That fast ball right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder on the ground to the left. Suarez throw to first in time. One up, one down. Good late bite on that slider. Got the hitter out in front, rolled over on it. Exactly what he was supposed to do. He’s two outs away. Here’s the second baseman, Jose Altuve. 0 for three with three strikeouts. [Applause] Check swing and he went. That’s strike one. Go the tall righty. He features a fourseam fast ball, a slider, and he works in a sinker. [Applause] Highfly ball and that one curling foul down the right side. [Applause] And that’s downstairs now. One and two. Well, he missed badly with that O2 fast ball. Hitter has to understand probably wants to try to put him away with that pitch. So, got to stay ready for it. Just missed. Two balls, two strike. Base is empty, one away here in the top of the ninth. [Applause] Swang in a line drive ripped right center field. This one could be trouble around first heading for two into second and he’s got a double. Been a pretty rough game at the plate for him so far. A bunch of strike outs. So that felt good. I’m sure anytime you can drive a ball into the gap the other way, it feels so good. And that’s when you know you’re right where you need to be at the plate. It’s even better when it gets you extra bases. Got to love looking in at your dugout and seeing your teammates fired up. Really important at bat coming up now. One out, runner at second. And here now is the Astros cleanup hitter, Christian Walker. That’s too low. And that is ball one. [Applause] Tying run at the plate. One [Applause] that misses and it’s two in one. Two in one. And that’s downed away. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position. He’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. Man at second. That pitch in for a strike. Bounce. Three and two. Just amazing to me how many closers and backend relievers just throw absolute gas these days. I never would have had a chance. Toss to Naylor and just one out remaining for Houston. Well, there’s a lot riding on that at bat right there. Nice job of the pitcher to bear down, make the pitch, get the ground ball. Excellent piece of work. And now the catcher comes up to him, Victor Keratini. [Applause] It’s strike one to the catcher, man. I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. [Applause] Gle is just one strike away. Got him. And that’s the ball game. 3-1 ball game. Quick game. We were looking for a little bit more. It seemed at points the offenses were going to break out, but a total of four runs combined. Really good pitching and defense on both sides. Just a couple of key swings making all the difference. And your final 3-1 for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shabi. We’ll see you soon. Heat. Heat.
