MLB LIVE🔴 St. Louis Cardinals vs Colorado Rockies – Jul 22, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
John Shabi and Chris Singleton with you. The first half of the All-Star break is behind us and partner, it’s go time in the second half. And if you want to be playing meaningful games at the end of September, you got to put your head down and grind for the next eight weeks. It’s the St. Louis Cardinals going up against the Colorado Rockies. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. Just about set and towing the slab, Kyle Freeland. And Singi, it’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think they can move through a ball game and you look off, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. Brendan Donovan, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. The pitch tapped softly on the ground. The throw to first, one out in the top of the first. Now we take a check of the St. Louis Cardinals lineup. This has been a good, productive lineup so far this year. Currently ranking among the better teams in terms of total hits and runs per game. Well, you know, this lineup sees it as very important to put the ball in play. Boog. I mean, this is an age where strikeouts are up so high and guys are swinging and missing, going for the fences. But if you can increase that contact rate, you can be a dangerous club. You get more guys on base and then all of a sudden when that big swing comes through, you’re plating more runs. So, we’ll see if this pitcher can get some soft contact. Let the defense work behind him. One down, base is empty. Oh, this guy’s so comfortable hitting with two strikes. Even a good pitch early in the at bat. If he’s not ready to pull the trigger, he’s not worried if he gets to an 02 count. That one ripped. That’s down. One hops off the wall. Now he’ll turn for second and he’ll reach second with one away. Really nice job with two strike hitting in that at bat. Solid swing from start to end. On time with everything. Really good balance. Nice extension. and he met it out front for the line drive knock. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position now up for St. Louis. Alec Burlson fought off foul. Herrera leads off second with one gone in the inning. Ground ball up the middle. Sends it to Tolia. Two away. Batting fourth, first baseman Wilson Contrarus. Here’s Contrarus now. And this is a big opportunity for him to pick up his teammate right here. Let’s go Kyle. That one off the mark. And it’s one and0. A lot of pitchers have caught on to how good he is hitting the first pitch. Smart to avoid the zone right there. Next offering is in for a strike. Looks like he’s just sizing him up there. Really good pitch to hit, but he took it all the way. Sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game. That may be a pitch that he turns on. Slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats. fights it off. He’ll see another base knock right field and the Cardinals score first. It’s one zip. Well, that certainly feels good when you can win the at bat after being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there. showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. Here’s Nolan Aronado. And that one a little below the knees. Ball one. [Applause] Two outs. [Applause] That clips the corner. [Applause] swing and that ball smashed on a line. He makes the grab and that is that. So, one run in the inning on this base hit. It’s now one- nothing. Back here in Denver on the mound for this one, Steven Matz. How about a report on him, Chris? Well, he’s putting together a really nice season on the mound. Erra RA in the low threes. Very respectable when you consider guys are looking to do damage. They’re not trying to just walk and hit singles. They’re trying to hit homers and draw walks and score runs. So, when you have a guy that can limit the other team from scoring more than a few runs, that’s really tough to beat game in and game out. Here’s Tyler Freeman to hit. And that’s a base hit. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. Everything came together for him. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the ball straight to it. That’s great work right there. Next to hit for the Rockies, Mickey Monia, just missed. [Applause] And another ball. [Applause] Highf fly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. Nobody out. Runner at first. On the ground. And that’s just foul. [Music] goes down looking. Jordan Beck digging in for the Rockies. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. One strike. Man at first, one away. Swanging a miss as he was out front that time. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. Bangs off the wall. Freeman headed home. He’ll score. It’s around the board and picks up an RBI. When you connect and it jumps off your bat like that, you’re thinking double at the very least. Put a good swing on it. And man, he wasn’t fooled at all. One out, runner at second. And now the veteran third baseman Ryan McMahon outside. And that’s ball one. man at second. Runner takes off. Pitch misses. Go to third save and the go ahead run is now only 90 ft away. Wow, that’s a pretty elite throwing arm right there from the catcher spot. Pretty daring for him to try to steal third right there, but he gets the bag. Maybe the element of surprise was what came in because he’s not used to guys running on him and right there still in third base probably caught him off guard a little bit. At 96 that pitch is in for a strike. One away with a runner at third. [Applause] There’s a strike. 95 of that one. [Music] [Applause] Hit on the ground to short. Lays out, but he can’t squeeze it. In comes the run from third. It’s an RBI single. It’s 2-1. Well, that’s a frustrating way to fall behind in this one as the infield single drives in the run. And sometimes all you have to do is put the ball in play and you give your teammate a chance to hurry home. And here is Ezekiel Tobar inside. One and0. [Applause] And that one is in for a strike. Good pitch. Good approach right there. You want to get something just a little higher that you can elevate. Stay out of that double play on the corner for a strike. One and two. See if you can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading to count one, two, don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you get hurt. In the dirt blocked. McMahon stands at first with one out. [Applause] hacks and misses. It’s a strike out batting six. Here’s Michael. Michael Tolia. And that drops in for a strike. [Applause] and that one hit to first. Can’t glove it cleanly and they tag him out. But two runs for him and they jump ahead. Second inning coming up here in Denver. It’s the Rockies two and the Cardinals one. Back here at Coorsfield, top of the second and stepping in for the Cardinals, Mason Win. Freeland back to work. And there’s the strike, man. I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. Swing and a liner. Foul off to the right. Next offering is in the dirt. And there’s a ball. Really close pitch down around the knees there. And you could see him asking where it missed. probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. Check swing on the 2-2. Appeal to first. It did not go around. swing and a ball hammered left field and it’s a one hopper off the wall. Should be extra bases. Safe at second with a leadoff double. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Pretty much just a textbook double into the gap. And when you can drop one in there between the outfielders, you know you’re making the turn at first. Just an excellent swing. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Jordan Walker next up for the Cardinals. Misses outside and that’s ball one. No strike. up the middle dives and he can’t hang on. No throw and the defense comes away with nothing. [Music] So runners at the corners, nobody out. And here’s the catcher, Pedro Pah. What a stop. The feed for one. Return throw to first. Double play and the run scores from third. First and third, nobody out. You’re thinking you’ve got it lined up for a pretty big inning right here. So that double play, it’s pretty deflating. They get the run in, but now they’re starting all over. Victor Scott next up for the Cardinals. There’s the strike. Ball game is still tied. They can get out of this inning with a tie game. [Applause] This to center field. Beck makes the catch in and over. One run on two hits. No errors. No one left. Now to the bottom of the second. We are tied 2-2. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom half of inning number two. Now it’s going to be number 35. Fernandez. Downing ball here. Rolls foul. Singi wasn’t very sharp in the first. Got hit around a little bit. Just wasn’t able to locate particularly well. A lot of stuff at the fat part of the plate. Yeah, Boo. He wasn’t fooling anyone. And it’s a tough place to be cuz it’s not always obvious what adjustments need to be made. Sometimes it’s location, sometimes it’s being too predictable. Sometimes you’re tipping your pitches. He’s going to need to figure it out quickly though. And quickly one away in the second. Austin Nola. And now it’s Austin Nola. just missed. Tied up here in the early going. [Music] Close one. Doesn’t get the call. Two and 0. Larry Bullard, our umpire behind the plate. Boo. Bullard’s got a pretty standard strike zone. Sometimes they’ll have you guessing a little bit, but overall well respected umpire in the league. That’s in for a strike. In today’s game, not that many fast ball counts, but hitters still in the back of their minds. They’re looking for one. Two change up call right there. Excellent pitch selection to go with. That one finds the corner and now two and two. Rainbow two strike [Applause] [Music] downstairs and that’s ball four. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I’ll tell you what, he earned that ball. Man at first with one gone. Here’s Colorado’s DH Brentton Doyle. [Applause] right through there for a strike. And that one sliced foul. Let’s go Rocky. And a base hit right there. Quick throw back in. Lead runner holds it second with one gone. How about second baseman? So the lineup flips over. Now it’s the second baseman. Tyler Freeman singled and scored his first time. Pitch misses and it’s one to know. No, that’s a ball. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. [Applause] And a base hit on the line. They hold it at third base and now the bases are loaded all over that one right there. You often hear the phrase short to it, long through it. And that’s a great example of it right there. Got the barrel in the hitting zone early, squirted it up with the welltimed swing and came away with a beautiful line drive into center field. Now the number two hitter Mickey Monia. Called strike right there. [Applause] Swinging a ground ball. Nice stop and they get the out. But he looks so comfortable making that play. Dives. comes up with it and then from one knee like he’s just playing catch with his kid. Nice throw across the diamond at first. Here’s the center fielder, Jordan Beck. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season, so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. And ball one, one ball go straight. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. Traffic on the bases with one already in in bottom half of inning number two. That one not close. Two and one. Move into the bullpen for the Cardinals. Sunny Gray up and loosening in the pen. [Music] [Applause] Two on, two outs. Fouled off. He was late. [Music] [Applause] That’s outside count. Three and two. Ryan McMahon in the Colorado on deck circle. Second and third. Two down. And they’re all loaded up. Oh, that sets up a really big at bat in this game. These are the moments when everyone in the stadium gets really locked in. So, bases all loaded up. Ryan McMahon digging in for the Rockies [Applause] outside with a breaking ball. [Applause] [Applause] Doyle the runner at third. Freeman on second. Beck on first with two down. Next offering in there for a strike. And that’s strike two. Very well executed change up right there if he can command the fast ball consistently. That’s going to be an important pitch in terms of him turning this outing around. Right through there. Got him. They limit the damage here. So they get one but end up leaving the bases loaded. We play two full. It’s the Rockies three and the Cardinals two. And we’re back. Here’s the second base, Brendan Donovan. Brendan Donovan. Donovan goes 6’1, 28 years old, and he was born in Germany. Takes it in for the out. Now that hitter, Ivon Herrera. And now it’s Ivon Herrera. Doubled in his first AB. As a batter, he’s known for performing better in these night games. He might start two for two in this one. Got it started a little too early. Strike one. [Applause] Dives, but it kicks off his glove. Still able to get it there in time. And they come away with an out after a tricky start to the play. Great job by the second base right there. quick reaction, a dive, knock that ball down, and big leaguers just don’t panic. Not the good ones. He gets up, makes the play, really good throw over to first base. That’s the kind of composure that you want to see from a guy in that position. Now the left fielder, Alec Burlson. And that’s through there for a strike. 1-1. Two out. Base is empty. Let’s go Rockies. [Music] Up the middle. Sends it to Tolia. St. Louis goes down in order. Offense held in check there. We move on to the bottom of inning number three. It’s the Rockies three and the Cardinals two back here in Denver. Now it’s the shortstop Ezekiel Tovar. Been a rough start on the mound for this guy. This third inning so important for him to get on track, turn the page, settle in, do all those things you need to do to give your team a little bit of length in this one. All these Rockies doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. It’s not just the three runs they’ve already scored. On top of that, they forced this starter to throw more pitches than he wanted to at this point of the game. Good fade and sinking action in that change up got that hitter to roll over. Next for Colorado, Michael Tolia. Michael Tolia. And that pitch count is impactful because if they can keep making him work hard out there, it may force the bullpen to get involved a little sooner rather than later. One out. Base is empty. [Music] In the air, right field. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. Two away. Batting leftielder Yaka. Here’s the left fielder. grounded out his first time off. In the air right field, Walker gets under it, drops into the glove, and that is that. Back here at Coors Field, all set for the start of the inning. And here’s the first baseman, Wilson Contrus. You know, these cards, to put it bluntly, need to put together more competitive at bats. And I don’t think they’ve lived up to their own expectations at the plate. They’re swinging early, being aggressive, but one or two pitches later, the at bat is over. That’s not going to cut it if it’s not resulting in hits. So, they might want to be a little more selective up there. And that one in the air center field puts it away. One away. Now batting third baseman, Nolan. There’s Nolan Aronado 0 for one so far. Let’s go Rockies. First pitch just misses. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So that’s a good take by him. There’s the strike. One down. Base is empty. Two and one. There’s the strike of the knees. Line drive. Back pulls it down and there’s two gone. Now batting short stop Mason win. Now Mason win one for one with a double and a run score. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game and that is out of play. Boo. This guy’s definitely a plus runner but what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time. never takes a break. It’s guys like that, even though they don’t have the elite speed, the fact that they’re consistent with it, they make moves on the base paths. [Music] Hard hit left field base hit and that keeps the inning alive. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. Jordan Walker next up for the Cardinals and a foul ball. Come on, Rockies. Swings and misses and it’s 0 and two. That one missing inside. [Music] swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. So that’s two straight two out hits. Now batting catcher Pedro P. And now the Cardinals catcher Pedro Pah. He hit into a double play his first time up. right through there for a strike. If he can get through this one, put up a zero, this will help in his outings to come. [Applause] [Music] Off the mark there. And the count is one and one. that crosses the plate and now they’re just one strike away from getting out of this mess. He goes down looking. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out. Gets out of the jam. Clearly, he’s happy with those results. Welcome back. And they turn to a new arm as we kick off the bottom of the fourth. Sunny Gray still pretty early in the ball game. So, this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs, kind of bridge the gap that starter left. It’ll bring up the catcher Austin Nola. The walk and a run scored his first time. Swing and a miss and it’s 0 and one. I think he was sitting off speed there. swings and misses and it’s on two ball straight that one missed one and two [Applause] got him and there’s one down just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there and I don’t think he was taking it thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. Brenton Doyle digging in for the Rockies. One for one with a single so far. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Base is empty, one away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. And he lays down a bunt. Bare hand scoop. Fires to first. Got him. Nice play. He was out early today working on that very play. Second baseman Tyler Freeman. So the Rockies lineup turns over. So in for Colorado, Tyler Freeman. First pitch is in the dirt. That one fouled off. And strike two. One ball, two strike on the ground right side. Gets it to first. Third out and that ends the frame. One, two, three go the Rockies and it remains a 3-2 ball game and welcome back to the ballpark. We go to the top of the fifth and now it’s going to be Victor Scott. Freeland back to work and he bunts but that’s a foul ball. You know these Cardinals doing a good job of simply getting the bat on the ball in this game and the numbers back that up. One thing that really stands out to me is how they’ve only struck out one time. That’s good discipline right there. And on top of it they’re producing more than a hit per inning. Up next for the Cardinals back to the leadoff spot in the St. Louis lineup. Brendan Donovan next up for the Cardinals. That’s off the mark and that is ball one. All those numbers mean this offense is really making the defense work by just putting the ball into play. Anything can happen at that point. Step off throw to first. Throws it away. And he’s going to get to second with nobody out. Scott leads off second with nobody out. Next offering is in for a strike. One way to make a guy real uncomfortable at the plate is pound him inside with good velocity. They’re doing that right here. [Applause] Swing at a highf fly ball. Well struck going back on this one. He won’t get there. That should be extra bases. Scott headed for the plate. The relay, the tag, and he’s safe. It’s 33. Well, here we are. Third time through the order. And this is where we see the OPS jump off. Manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. Ivon Herrera next up for the Cardinals. One for two. [Applause] Yeah, that’s fouled off. [Applause] And now it’s even up. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Bradley Bllelock preparing to come on if needed. Agnos warming up as well. [Applause] Hit hard. Should be extra bases coming home. He’ll score easily. He’s in with a double and that’s his second double of the night. He has had such a good day today. I don’t think he’s going to want to leave when it’s over. Couple of doubles today for the DH. Runner in scoring position, no outs. And up next for St. Louis, Alec Burlson. And fast ball misses outside for a ball. And that’s ball one. Just missed. Well, the good thing so far is that he hasn’t issued any free passes. Unfortunately, they’re making pretty good contact. So not getting the swings and misses and making that defense work behind him inside just missed. Get ready for some action here. Good RBI guy at the plate. Runners in scoring position and the hitters count and ball four to a board. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire bat. There comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Kyle Freeland won’t go any further tonight and he’s not going to be happy with himself. New pitcher on the mound in a moment. Now pitching Bradley Bllelock taking over on the mound. Well, he’s had trouble at times keeping the ball in the park this season. Something to keep in mind here. A first and second, no outs. Here comes Wilson Contreras. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level for him right now at the plate. It’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. Hit softly on the ground left side off balance feet. There’s one and they get him easily at first. It’s a double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. Nolan Aronado. Here’s Nolan Aronado for two in this one. [Applause] That catches the outside corner. Go and one. One straight. Runner at third. Two away. Oh, one outside low. Two and one. [Applause] That one hit to right. He’s got it and that’ll do it. But two runs for him and they jump ahead. Last half of the fifth coming up. It’s the Cardinals four and the Rockies three. And we’re back. John Shabi with my buddy Chris Singleton. And set to get us started. Bottom five. Mickey Moniac [Applause] and that’s in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. [Music] [Applause] to the right side, lays out. Oh, it’s off his glove. The throw comes in too late and he reaches safely. No problem beating out the infield hit right there. Good hustle getting down the line. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So, we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. [Applause] Next a hit for the Rockies. Jordan Beck on a line. That’s a hit. They’ll throw to third. He’s safe at third and the tying run is 90 ft away. Couple of singles back to back. Just a very nice approach and swing right there to use the big part of the field. Everything was on time. He stayed balanced through the entire swing and just launched that one into center. Now a pretty big bat coming up with a chance to even this ball game up. There’s Ryan McMahon. Now he was late there. Strike one. Let’s go. Let’s go. [Applause] [Music] That misses and it’s one and two. [Applause] And there’s the ball. Moniac on third. Beck out of first with nobody out. Checks his swing now to appeal to third. No, he held up. trying to check his swing. A field to third and no swing. It’s ball four. Pretty much the last thing you want from your bullpen arms are three passes, especially in spots like this. Make the team earn their way off. [Applause] Tovar up to bat next. Lays off for a ball. The opportunity for a huge inning exists right here. Base is loaded, nobody out. But as a hitter, can’t be over anxious. That pitcher is up against the wall. Make him come to you. Bases juiced, no outs. And a count one and two. [Music] Strike three. Got him swinging. And that is a big first out. came inside with that two strike fast ball nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate. Couldn’t get around on it and catch it out front. Many times if you do, it’s a foul ball. And you know, a lot of pitchers, they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter. And when they’ve got him up against the ropes, got to figure out a way to put them away. Did a nice job right there. Tia stands in here, takes ball one low. [Applause] Swinging a foul out of play. I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Well, this is where the team aspect really comes into play on the offensive side of the game, right? I mean, missed opportunity to tie it up with the runner at third, one out, couldn’t put the ball in play. So, now it’s time to pick him up. And that’s where good teams they go to. They operate on this level of next man up. That mentality is what causes them to win series, get into the postseason. That helps keep the energy and morale high in the dugout. Number 35 in the box now takes strike one. Tough situation right here. It’s so important as a pitcher to get ahead in the count as he did right there. And that one is lifted in the air. Scott on the move to the gap. Brings it in. And that will end the inning. Rockies leave him loaded. Score holds at 4-3. Back here in Denver. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six. And stepping in is the speedy Mason Win. That’s towards center. Beck on the move. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. One down. Up next for the Cardinals. Jordan Walker. Next up for the Cardinals. He’s two for two. All right, Rockies. Block, a 6’2 righty, 215 lbs. And they went out and made a trade for him last season. Next offering upstairs [Music] and it’s fouled away. Well, you put good velocity in the head of the hitter. He’s got to get it ready early and then change speeds. Keep him off balance. That’s the goal. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And that’s ruled the swing. It’s a strike out. Now batting catcher. Now here is Pedro Pah. knee high. That’s in for a strike. Hit hard on the ground to short. Whips it across. Out number three. Nothing doing for the offense that time. 891 scheduled in the bottom of the sixth. It’s the Cardinals four and the Rockies three. Well, we go bottom six. Here’s the catcher, Austin. Austin Nova. Yeah, the first offering a fast ball for a strike. One strike. Highf fly ball out towards left center. Scott under it. Brings it in and there’s one down. Now batting designated hitter. And now the DH Doyle. First pitch and he just misses. One ball. Okay. Fast ball is outside. [Applause] [Music] Next offering is fouled back. One down. Base is empty. Highf fly ball out towards left field. That one back there tattooed to Tater Town and gone. It’s his eighth home run of the year and it ties it up. It’s 44. Wow, what a clutch swing right there. And now anything can happen in this game. Well, clearly some frustration out there on the mound right now. I mean, that ball was so close to going foul. It would have been a long strike, but instead batter gets rewarded. Did a nice job of getting to the pitch and hitting it hard enough to get over the fence. Freeman in the box with one away as he takes ball one. fought off foul. One out, base is empty and a run in here in the bottom of the six. [Music] Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. [Applause] battling here as he fouls it away. Good job to fight that one off. Tied at four. Way high with that one. And the count now even up [Applause] and down on strikes. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strike out. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. Now it’s the right fielder, Mickey Moniac. And a good fast ball to start him off at strike one. Ball one there. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. He’s been able to go inside as well as outside. effectively working both sides of the plate in this at bat. That’s a little bit low. [Applause] Foul ball. Another two- two upcoming. Two down to swing and a miss. Struck him out. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. The Rockies get one by way of the long ball. It’s now tied 4-4. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here at Coorsfield, we go to the top of the seventh. And now the center fielder, Victor Scott. Just missed. Stirring in the Colorado bullpen, Jake Bird, getting ready to come on for Bud Black. Bodnik getting cranked up as well. And another ball on the ground out to short. Tovar on the run sends it over to first. Pretty nice play there. Just an outstanding play going up the middle right there. And the exchange to get the throw off to first just shows you why he’s one of the best shorts stops around. So smooth yet so quick at the same time. And any slower. And those wheels burning down the first baseline are going to turn that into an infield hit. Donovan the next to hit takes ball one. One down, base is empty. So, two balls and no strikes. Definitely a swing and miss slider down and in. He finished that really well. Just couldn’t get him to offer at it. In the air, center field. Beck under it, hauls it in, and there’s two away. [Applause] So now here’s the DH Ivon Herrera. Go Rockies. And that’s in for a strike. One strike the other way. And that’s a fair ball. around first heading for two. Throws to second in with a double and a go ahead runs at second with two out. Having himself a really nice game at the plate. He really shot that one down the right field line and somehow found a way to keep it from slicing. Foul. One thing that was great about the approach, his head was down all the way through the pitch and that’s how you do it. A chance now to take the lead and at this point in the game that could be a deciding run. So the go-ahehead run is into he gets the intentional walk here and now a force at any base with two gone. Now batting the first base first and second two outs and now the first baseman Wilson Contrarus. that misses the zone. Ball one. That’s good pitch there. Billy had some run and finished a little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. And the slider just misses. that catches the zone for a strike and it’s two and one now. Go ahead run at second here in the top half of inning number seven. Strike two and there’s a real chance they get out of this without allowing a run. [Applause] Now one out to right and that’s the third out. Two left on seventh inning stretch time and we are tied 4-4 [Music] [Applause] [Music] and welcome back to the ballpark set for the last half of the seventh. So in now for Colorado, Jordan Beck. [Applause] And there’s the strike. [Music] All one, one ball, two straight. [Music] Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. That one just misses. Two balls, two strike. Hit in the air center field. Scott should have this one. Calls it in. And there’s one away. Now batting third baseman Ryan Ryan McMahon steps to the plate. You can do it. First pitch misses. One ball. No strike. And a strike. Next pitch is outside and there’s the strike. All tied up near the bottom of the seventh. Pitch misses and it’s three and two. [Applause] [Music] got him swinging and that’s six Ks for him in this one. Now batting. Here’s the shorts stop at the plate. Ezekiel Tobar 0 for three in this one. And a base hit. So a two out keeps the inning alive. Well, clearly he was ready to hit right there. I love that swing and I’m sure his hitting coach does even more. Took a pitch right on the low outside corner of the zone and just ripped it for a base hit and that’s easier said than done. So two down, Michael Tolia now at the plate, 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. He had a foul ball. Two gone. The possible go-ahead run at first. Misses the zone for a ball. That was the sweeper. Rocky on the ground to the left and it stays fair. It’s in and out of his glove. Brown’s third headed for the plate and he’s out. Tried to score in the error, but instead the third out and the inning is over. Tried to take the lead in the late going. Can’t blame him, but the defense was having none of that. Close play at the dish. The tag applied just in time and we’ll push on with a tie ball game. [Applause] Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Jake Bird and he’s been hit pretty hard at times this year. So he’s looking for better right now. Giving up more than a hit for any. So now it’s Dolan Aronado. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. And another ball. The Rockies have some action in the pen. Seth Halverson getting ready to come on for Bud Black. [Applause] tied at four. And a foul ball makes the count. Two and one. [Applause] Slider misses outside. That almost feel like he’s frustrated a little bit. He wants to be challenged. Mason win in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. It’s a leadoff walk and that’s the go-ahead run. Now that looks like we’ve got a substitution at first. Pinch running here. Garrett Hson at first for the cargo. Go ahead run on base. Digging in. Mason win. [Applause] Oh, he doesn’t get the call. Ball one. This is one of those situations the infielders have to pre-plan and understand that the ball’s got to be hit extremely hard right at them if they’re going to have a chance to go for a double play [Applause] at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. The go-ahead run aboard at first. Nobody out. [Applause] And that is cut on and miss. That is strike two with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. It’s through for a hit. Throw holds him at second, but the go-ahead run now in scoring position and still nobody out. able to come through behind in the count right there. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. Now a good opportunity to potentially jump ahead in this game here in the later innings trying to move the runners over. Grabs it bare-handed. It’s there and that’s a great play. That’s a good piece of hitting right there. The job was to move the runner up and give your team a chance to score the go ahead run. That’s exactly what happened. So you better believe your teammates are happy with you after that at bat. Pedro Pah next up for the Cardinals. Golden opportunity right here. That’s off the mark and that’s ball one. Definitely a strikeout situation right here. Lots of ways for that go ahead run to score if the ball’s put in play. Lined and that’s a base hit. One runs in. Here comes the throw. It’s off the mark and he scores and it’s 6-4. Big one there as he drives in a couple of runs. That pretty much split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay. One down, runner at first. Victor Scott next up for the Cardinals. Look out. and it hit him. That’s one of those lookout pitches. As soon as it leaves the pitcher’s hand, you start bracing for impact, knowing that it’s going to be hard to get out of the way of that one. Manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make a move to dip into the Rockies bullpen. Jake Bird gives way two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Now pitching on a pitch out of the pen here. And this could be a pretty critical point in this game. and they’re hoping he’s the guy to keep him within striking distance. First and second, one out. Now it’s the second baseman, Brendan Donovan. [Applause] And a big swing and a missing one. 01 now. Double play ball to second. Slings to first in time. Now batting the designated hitter, Ivon Herrera. Now it’s the DH Ivon Herrera. Singi, he’s got a history of coming through into big spots. I know I like to talk about I’m not sure whether clutch actually exists, but you look at the numbers and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots just off the inside edge. Well, I think it’s the ability to assess the situation, understanding what the pitcher has, what he’s trying to get people out on, and then being able to use the entire field in the dirt. Nice job behind the plate. kind of goes without saying, but stranding these two runners in scoring position right here, it feels like it’s a must if they stand a chance to win this game. Just off the inside edge, Alec Burlson in the St. Louis on deck circle. Back and forth we go. A seessaw battle in the late stages of this one. Check swing and he went. Three balls in a strike. [Applause] And that one fouled off instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended. Tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. Two outs and a swing and a miss. Inning over and it could have been worse. A couple of runs in the inning puts him ahead. Last half of the eighth coming up, it’s the Cardinals six and the Rockies four. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Kyle Lady. And this is his 40th appearance of the season. So, he’s starting to log a decent amount of work this year. Kyle righty. Here’s the left fielder 0 for three with two fly outs and a ground out. Yaka Fernandez late with the swing there. Action in the St. Louis bullpen. Ryan Hley the closer is getting ready and perhaps looking at a long save opportunity here. And that one is inside. Oh, he never moved cuz he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. and it remains two and two. He’s mixing his pitches really well late on that fast ball after seeing the change up. See if he can elevate one. I think if he does, he’ll get the swing and miss. Still two and two after the foul ball. And this is inside foul ball left side. He’ll see another [Music] fouled off again and it remains three and two. Five foul balls in this at bat so far and these two are going headtohead. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to get into it a little bit more and more each pitch even though there hasn’t been a ball in play yet. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. [Music] Foul ball and it remains a full cow. Five foul balls in a row. I have no idea what that feels like, but you got to love this battle. Just wondering who’s going to blink first. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. [Music] That one the other way. And that’s a fair ball. Makes the turn and heads for second. And he greets the new arm from the bullpen with a double. Well, that’s how you respond. Lead off man comes up, gets into scoring position. Now, there are several ways that they can get this run across. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Stepping in, Austin Nola, of course, little bro Aaron, one of the top starters in baseball. Ball one, no strikes. [Applause] The tying run at the plate. This to third. Hamson throws across the diamond. One gone in the bottom of the eighth. That’s why you hug the lines on the corners late in the ball game like this. positioned perfectly. Bud Black bringing on a pinch hitter. Hunter Goodman and he would be the tying run boo. So we may see him try to launch one if he gets a good pitch to handle. [Applause] That’s a ball tried to sweep her. [Applause] Tying run at the plate and fouled off [Applause] way upstairs. And that’s ball two. [Applause] out in front. Rip foul [Applause] and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again with the tying run at the plate here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. bat to right and there’s two down now batting second baseman Tyler manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change Kyle Ley out of the game and he’s responsible for the runner on second so the book isn’t closed on him yet we’ll be right back. So, the closer summon from the bullpen, Ryan Hellley. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different, so we’ll see what he’s got here. Tyler Freeman will hit next. This is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation. Yeah, Boo. Not sure what the numbers say, but clearly an at bat that could change the course of this game dramatically. [Applause] Tap foul at the plate. Two outs and one in scoring position. [Applause] And that one fouled off. Looking very settled on the mound here in the eighth. One more out. They’ll probably hand it off to their closer for the ninth with at least a two-run lead. [Applause] Got him. That’s the third out. Inning over. Well, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. Now pitching. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Victor Vodnik. and he’s had a really hard time throwing strikes so far this season. His walk rate is up there among the worst in the league for relievers. So digging in Burlson, leftielder Alec Burles and the pitch fast for a strike. in his second season. He features a four seam fast, a slider, and he works in a change up. This one in the air right field carous. And there’s one down. Now batting first base now up to the plate. [Applause] swings through that one for strike one. Stirring in the Colorado bullpen. Tyler Kinley getting ready to come on for Bud Black. Herget getting loose as well. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Yan swinging a foul straight back. Base is empty, one away here in the top of the ninth. [Applause] Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Has room and he makes the catch. Now that is third baseman Garrett Hamson. Two down, base is empty. Now up for St. Louis. Garrett Hampson came into the game as a pinch runner. This is his first trip to the plate in this one. [Applause] And that one upstairs, ball one. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. Next offering is in for a strike. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] way inside. Gets out of the way. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] got him swinging. So they go quietly there. 234 set to hit in the bottom of the ninth. It’s the Cardinals six and the Rockies four. So bottom of the ninth. So in for Colorado Mickey [Music] just missed. One ball. No go straight. [Applause] That misses. Ball two facing a closer that delivers big time velocity. Well, normally against a big arm with this kind of velocity, you look for the ball down because the fast ball up is a little hard to catch up to. But he’s shown really good plate discipline by not offering at that last pitch down. [Applause] And that’s ball four. And that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. They’re not ready to go home quite yet. Up next for the next for Colorado, Jordan Beck. Jordan back that misses the zone and that is ball walk. Maybe losing command a little bit after the walk. Next pitch, not even close. [Music] [Applause] And now two and nothing. Chris, with that distraction and a speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter’s count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. Tying run at the plate and that misses as well. Well, an interesting situation. one swing can tie up the ball game. But if you’re patient and work a walk, then you bring the game-winning run to the plate. [Applause] A strike right through there. That one in triple digits. Well, so many hard throwing relievers in the game these days. You would think that hitters have made the adjustment, but I don’t know if you ever get used to it. Just pumping gas out of the bullpen. so hard to play catchup. Puts it in the air out towards left center. Squeezes it and there’s one away. Up next for the Rockies, third baseman, Ryan Mc. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Ryan McMahon. [Applause] Smash to the left side. There’s one. That’s a double play. The ball game is over. Way to make a pitch right there. Get that ball on the ground. Defense picking them up. Huge double play to end this ball game. And this one ends with a final score of six to four. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show, I’m John Shami. Thanks for joining us. What the heat?
